El Toro

New Concept by the El Toro Family Now Open

November 8, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Toasted Brunch Bar + Cafe, the newest  concept created by owners of El Toro, opens there doors today for a soft opening in the space formerly occupied by Melt Bar & Grilled at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek.

Enrique Alvarez, El Toro’s district manager shared that “as a local family we want to stay in the area, so we continue to create new restaurant concepts to allow our family to have new opportunities.
Last year they added El Toro Express, near the Dayton Mall and mentioned they are currently looking at a potential 2nd location in Kettering. After 20+ years in the business, with Toasted I might actually get to see my kids before they go to bed at night.”

They’ve totally remodeled the 5000 square foot interior space, giving it a light and bright atmosphere.  They’ve used their travels abroad to bring back menu ideas and flavors they are not found on local menu’s and look forward to sharing these items with the public.

Alvarez’s favorite menu items include:

Loaded Bagel Sandwich – over easy egg, sausage, bacon, hash brown toasted with may and a side of mixed greens with house vinaigrette or home fries

The Bavarian – Artisan sourdough bread, bratwurst, breakfast sausage, mozzarella cheese, carmelized onion, mixed greens, toasted mayo and a side.

Other tasty menu items include:

Strawberry + Basil Toast, Shakshuka, Chilaqueiles and the Pancake Taco.  Breakfast item are served daily til 3pm,

Then there is a menu of sandwiches, soups and salads to choose from the rest of the day. Toasted has a full bar and offers a machu pichu blend of coffee, a specialty espresso drink menu, fresh juices and seasonal cocktails.

All breads and pastries, cookies and scones  are made from scratch, in house daily You don’t have to dine there to pick up pastries, which range from $4-8. They’ve hired about 20 employees and are still looking to add a couple of baristas and servers to their crew.

A grand opening is scheduled for Nov 22nd, with details to come. The restaurant seats about 200 with additional seating on the patio.

El Toro’s Taco Tuesday Taking Dayton by Storm

September 18, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

We splashed some free salsa on these Tacos !

It was 8:20pm on Tuesday night at the El Toro Restaurant across from the Greene with the Food Adventure Crew.  People were lined up in the lobby and jammed in the bar area waiting for a seat.  The hostess said it would be a 20-30 minutes wait.  This is the scene all day at Taco Tuesday, every Tuesday at El Toro Restaurants across the Dayton area.  The feature is $1 Crunchy and Soft Tacos all day.  And it has taken the Dayton area by storm.

HERE IS THE SKINNY ON EL TORO’S TACO TUESDAY:

— TACOS are 1 DOLLAR EACH

— Choose CRISPY OR SOFT TACOS

— Choose one of 3 meats: GROUND BEEF, SHREDDED CHICKEN, OR PORK

— Each Taco comes with shredded CHEESE and shredded LETTUCE.  One of our “fat kid tricks,” is pour the free tableside  salsa on your taco too, and of course a drop of the hot sauce in a bottle that sits at each table.

— Taco Tuesday Special is good all day from 11:00am – 10:30pm

Soft Tacos are $1 on Taco Tuesday at El Toro

The tacos are delicious and you can fill up for about 4 or 5 bucks and walk out stuffed.  The special price is about a third of what tacos are normally.  Throw in the free chips and salsa and you have a helluva deal and a cheap Food Adventure.    No wonder  El Toro has seen packed houses on Tuesdays.

WHERE TO GET $1 TACOS at EL TORO ON “TACO TUESDAYS”:

— GUACAMOLE DIP:
Perfect mix of avocado, onion, tomato and spices. We don’t know how they do it … they just do it.

— DINNER COMBO 18:

Guacamole Dip – the best !

A Chile Relleno, an Enchilada and a Chalupa.  The best of the best other

menu items.

— CHICKEN or STEAK FAJITAS:
Or get them “mixed” and they will include both chicken and steak. The sizzling fresh veggies and that charred taste in a tortilla is second to none. Ask for Sour Cream for sure,  hese.

— SEAFOOD CHIMICHANGAS:
The best ones in town by far.  A nice drizzle of white cheese sauce on top makes it a Tex-Mex Classic.

— Fried Ice Cream
End your night on a high note. A carmelized, honey ice cream creation with drizzled chocolate.

Viva Margarita!

February 21, 2016 By Brian Petro Leave a Comment

Elsa's Bad Juan

The drink that launched a thousand drunken texts…

Each year on February 22 we take some time to celebrate National Margarita Day. We all love a good margarita. They are a staple drink at any Mexican restaurant, and for the most part the only tequila based drink most people can name. Blended with ice or on the rocks, they come in all flavors in a margarita glass, usually with a salted (or in some cases, sugared) rim. If you are a Dayton native, you know that Elsa’s and their Bad Juans are THE margaritas to drink. You may also know that if you live in or near Tampa, Florida. There is an Elsa’s there, and Bad Juans are served in the Tampa Bay Times Forum Arena, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The margarita is a drink that every bartender, amateur and professional, knows how to make. It is one of the basics.

What no bartender knows is where the margarita originally came from. In fact, no one knows. But the stories that hover around the origins of the drink are pretty incredible. One of the most told ones is that a wealthy socialite from Texas names Margaret “Margarita” Sames created the drink in 1948 at a party she was throwing at her vacation home in Acapulco. She stepped behind the bar and started to experiment, and had her guests judge the results. The most popular one was the one that went on to bear her name. It is a great story, but it also ignores the fact that in 1945, Jose Cuervo had an advertisement with the phrase “Margarita: it’s more than a girl’s name”. A story that would fit that timeline is the one where it is created in the 1930’s for a woman named Marjorie King by a bartender named Carlos “Danny” Herrera. She was supposedly allergic to all forms of alcohol…except for tequila. This was made as her drink. Or, maybe a rock star bartender named Enrique Bastante Gutierrez made it for a little known actress named Margarita Cansino. Some bartenders think it was not named for a woman at all, but it is a variation of a classic drink named a Daisy, which in Spanish is margarita. The Daisy was a much more complex drink with a brandy base, and added simple syrup and soda water.

The margarita is a cocktail that comes from a much simpler background, probably relating a little closer to the sours popular in the late 19th century. When we go out, we look to get pitchers, fishbowls, 55 gallon drums, any large container full of a slightly sour, greenish/yellowish beverage. The original recipe is a little closer to this:

Margarita

1.5 oz. tequila (I am a fan of El Espalon Reposado lately)
1 oz. orange liqueur (Triple sec, Grand Marnier, etc.)
.75 oz. lime juice

Combine the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Shake well, and then strain into a margarita glass with a salted rim.

To salt a rim, take a lime wedge and run it around the edge of the glass to add moisture. Then dip the edge into a plate with kosher salt covering it, pressing the salt into the edge. Lift the glass and tap the edge gently, knocking off any excess salt. You want the salt to be on the outside and edge of the glass, not the inside where salt may slide into and contaminate the drink.

Strawberry Margarita

So simple to change the flavor of your margarita to your personal taste.

The original margarita recipe is very simple. Just three ingredients and you have a delicious cocktail ready to go. Such simplicity has inspired a wide variety of creativity in the margarita realm, much like it has in the martini realm. The core of the drink sill revolves around the tequila, and adding something sweet to it. Some of the variations are very subtle, like the Blue Margarita, Mango Margarita, or a Sour Apple Margarita. Some of them are a little more complicated:

Spicy Cucumber Margarita (via Examiner)

Half a cucumber, peeled and cubed
1 slice jalapeno pepper, minced, no seeds
1 oz. reposado tequila
.5 oz. lime juice (about half a medium lime)
.5 oz. orange liqueur

Muddle the cucumber and jalapeno in the bottom of a shaker, and then add ice. Pour all of the liquid ingredients into the shaker, and then shake. You want to shake it about ten or so times. Strain the drink into the margarita glass, filled with ice and rimmed with salt. You can mix some pepper flakes in the salt as well for some extra kick.

Catalina Margarita (via About.com)

1.5 oz. silver tequila
1 oz. peach schnapps
1 oz. blue curacao
.5 oz. sour mix

Add ice into a shaker. Pour all of the liquid ingredients into the shaker, and shake well. Pour into a margarita glass, rimmed with sugar and filled with ice. For fruitier or sweeter margaritas, a sugar rim is recommended.

Margarita mixed in a washing machine Baha Margarita (via The Beer Lady Speaks)

1.5 oz. silver tequila
1 oz. coconut rum (Malibu is an excellent choice)
1.5 oz. lime juice
1 tbsp. simple syrup (optional)

Add ice into a shaker. Pour all of the liquid ingredients into the shaker, and shake well. Pour into a margarita glass, rimmed with salt and filled with ice. The interesting thing here is the use of coconut rum as the sweet element, which marries well with the lime juice.

As mentioned earlier, Elsa’s is the undisputed champion of the margarita in Dayton. However, that is not to say there is not competition for the crown. Pepito’s in Kettering has been known to serve a delicious margarita or two. El Toro can also throw its hat in the ring, offering a wide variety of tequilas as well as variations on classic. El Meson will be celebrating the day with tapas specials as well as Meson Margaritas. Abuelo’s will also be celebrating the day with specials on their premium margaritas. There are plenty of places to go to celebrate National Margarita Day. Just remember this article if you have to work the next day. Cheers!

Who’d You Rather: EL TORO or El RANCHO GRANDE ? **+Win Free Dinner **

June 29, 2014 By Dayton937 26 Comments

Chicken Fajitas from El Toro

Chicken Fajitas from El Toro

Again, Food Adventures asks who’d you rather get it on with.  This time a plate from El Toro or a plate from El Rancho Grande?

In this battle for the border, we know Daytonians are picking sides and drawing their line in the margarita salt.  Comment below on which of these two Mexican Restaurants you like better and why !  One winner will be chosen at random and will win dinner with  The Food Adventures Crew at their favorite, either El Toro or El Rancho.  You will act as a referee for us as we also invite our biggest critic, the witty Michael R Hawk !  Let the insults fly !

Now, before you Dayton foodie purists jump all over our white cheese sauce…  We love Mexican Restaurants Taqueria Mixteca (feature article) and Taco Loco (feature article) as our personal faves.  Since we have featured those more obscure restaurants that most people have not been to, we decided for a more familiar fight…

Sound the bell, it’s time to rock the pinata !

First off, margaritas are chick drinks, so we will let the girls sound off and fight it out over who has the best margaritas of the two places.

Both places have fantastic service and tie in that category.  The tacos, and chimichangas are impossible to tell apart.  Also, the desserts like flan and fried ice cream are pretty much the same at both locations.

Del Mar Trio - Ragu's all time favorite

Del Mar Trio at El Rancho Grande features Lobster, Shrimp and Fish

As for everything else.. Here is how the Food Adventures judges saw it.

JAX’S VOTE:  EL TORO

— Jax says “The Salsa at El Toro is Better.”  The taste and chunkiness is second to none.  This gives El Toro an early knockout in my book.

— Hungry Jax says “El Toro’s Fajitas Reign Supreme.”  The fajitas at El Toro are the best.  I love fajitas.  Whether you get, steak, chicken or pollo (fish) fajitas, they are very filling and huge portions.

— Jax says “El Toro Gets the Slight Edge in Carnitas Tacos and Enchiladas.  To put it bluntly, these two restaurants have a bunch of dishes, that under the cheese sauce, none of us can tell apart from each other.  I like pork tacos and enchiladas, and El Toro is better by the slightest of margins, and the consistency is good across the 9 locations.  So, El Toro gets my vote by low blow.”

THE BIG RAGU’S VOTE: EL RANCHO GRANDE

El Toro beef tacos

Beef Tacos from El Toro (we added their terrific salsa)

—The Big Ragu says, “The Del Mar Trio dish at El Rancho Grande is the champ of both menus.  A must eat! Grilled lobster, tilapia and shrimp served on a fajita plate? FIGHT OVER !

— The Big Ragu says “El Rancho has Pacifico beer on tap.  I have never seen that beer anywhere in my life, other than in bottles.  Also, they feature Negra Modelo on tap.  The other place is too punch drunk to beat that!”  El Rancho Grande has similar draft beer choices at the 8 locations from North Dayton to Middletown.

— The Big Ragu says “El Rancho’s Chilles Rellenos are a deal maker.”  Stuffed with cheese, these huge poblano peppers are melt in your mouth delicious.  Stick a fork in them, they’re done!

Sound off and tell us which one you like, here is your chance for a free Food Adventure !

***** FREE DINNER WITH THE FOOD ADVENTURES CREW *****

LET’S HEAR FROM THE PEOPLE !  It is now your turn to comment on “Who’d you Rather : El Toro or El Rancho Grande?”

Pacifico Clara on Draft? YES ! YES ! YES !

Pacifico Clara on Draft at El Rancho Grande? YES! YES! YES!

Hold onto your sombrero, muchacho!  One person who comments on the story below will win dinner at their favorite, either El Rancho Grande or El Toro with Food Advntures!  They will be joined by Food Adventure’s biggest critic, Michael R. Hawk, for an interesting evening of fun and food.
