Fish Fry at the corner of Stroop and Far Hills:
Dayton’s 2020 Fish Fry Guide
This weekend marks the official beginning of Fish Fry Season in Dayton!
Dayton came by its fish fry tradition many years ago. Many of the European settlers who flocked to the Gem City and many of those immigrants were Catholic, and the tradition of foregoing the consumption of meat on Fridays made the fish fry a natural evolution.
The fish fry tradition developed even further during the Prohibition era, when fish fries became a way for former alcohol-purveying establishments to stay in business. Many went so far as to conceal their illicit speakeasies beneath the intoxicating aroma of frying fish, offering free or low-cost fish to those who imbibed.
As time moved forward, fish fries became an easy way to avoid meat while enjoying a night out and eating affordably. The tradition grew from there, providing Dayton families an opportunity to go out to dinner without breaking the bank.
Many places in town have fish fries and after much searching, asking and eating, here are some of the best places in the city to catch a fish fry. You’ll also notice Fish Frys aren’t just on Friday anymore!
And, as always, if we’ve forgotten your favorite, please share it with others by posting a comment below or emailing us.

The Miami Valley has 3 restaurants with all you can eat fish frys every Friday, year round.
Endless, crispy, golden fish served with your choice of sides. Generous portions and fish refilled to your hearts’ content. Yes, other restaurants may have Friday fish specials, but these are the only all you can eat ones that we know about that you can get every Friday any month of the year.
Food Adventures is happy to share these 3 All You Can Eat Restaurant Fish Frys available every Friday!!
1) GEORGE’S FAMILY RESTAURANT:
5216 N Dixie Dr, Dayton
$9.00 gets you Endless Pollack fish, fries and cole slaw offered year round on Fridays all day. A great deal! The fish is amazing and the servers are very attentive on refills. The fish filets are crispy and medium sized. They are seasoned and breaded perfectly and delicious. The diner’s atmosphere is a fun casual joint with oldies music. WARNING: this Fish Fry only lasts from 4pm to 8pm and sells out sometimes. We would suggest you get there not later than 5pm to avoid a sellout.
2) HASTY TASTY PANCAKE HOUSE:
3509 Linden Ave, Dayton
$9.00 – endless fish fries and cole slaw offered 52 weeks a year on Fridays. Again, what a deal! The fish is delicious, light, huge pieces cooked with a perfect crunch. Lots of choices of sides, and the dinner comes with two of them. It is simple, good food in an old school atmosphere. Homemade bread served with the meal and they usually have a deal on slices of pie for $1.25 if you ordered a dinner. One of the best bangs for your buck in town, and the servers are fast and friendly.
4) K.J.’S RESTAURANT:
35 W Center St, Germantown
This Germantown restaurant features all you can eat farm raised ocean catfish, swai, 2 sides, for $9.99. What a price! The catfish is rumored to be nice and flaky and not “fishy.” This special is also available every Friday. We have talked to the owners of the restaurant, and we can’t wait to check this one out ! They say it is very popular. The buzz is that the fish is great and that customers love it so much, they keep coming back for more.

The Insiders Guide to Dayton’s FISH FRY Season 2018
“The season has officially started. Dayton has the best “Fish Fry Season” around! When you hear “fish fry”, the words “boring” or “dull” may come to mind. Well let me tell you something…Dayton fish fries are nothing of the sort! Traditionally, fish fries were held on Fridays during the season of Lent as we Catholics don’t eat meat on those days. However, with the many Catholic parishes/schools and other organizations out there, and the amazing popularity of fish fries, they have expanded to Fridays outside of Lent as well. At a typical fish fry, you will be able to experience an amazing evening full of fish, chips (fries really), beer, silent auctions, black jack, poker, and much more! Plus, the cost you pay is significantly less than the amount you would spend on a night out on the town…and it supports a good cause! So, regardless of whether you are Catholic or not, definitely make a point to “catch” at least one or more of these great fish fries this season.“
The above was the intro to MostMetro’s very first fish fry round up, originally put together by Jane Krebs and it keeps getting bigger every year. Jane has moved on to other endeavors but we’ve kept up the tradition she started and you can find the area’s most comprehensive FISH FRY FINDER HERE. It’s always a work in progress, as many of the area church’s don’t have their their dates out yet ( St Peter, St. Paul, Holy Angles – talk to us!). So keep checking back for additions, and if you know of one we’ve missed, drop us a comment below.
Food Adventures then gives you the in depth scoop on each and every fish fry. How do we know? Because we actually go to each one and support the causes each and every year! NO ONE else breaks down 35 Dayton area fish frys like The Food Adventures Crew … join us…We list the TOP SEASONAL FISH FRYS, and also offer a short list of the BEST RESTAURANT FISH FRYS.
So, cast your nets, throw your bait in the water and see what you can catch this fish fry season !! We even have scoop on a “Do it yourself Fish Fry”at home ! Read this article and be the smartest fish in your school. Must be 21 to attend, except for the fish frys that are family events.

Where’s The Fish Fry? DMM’s 2017 Fish Fry Guide
When it comes to fish fry, Dayton doesn’t mess around. You may not be able to predict the weather in the winter, but we can sure predict that Friday’s mean fried fish, draft beer, raffles and gambling from Jan – April.
Over the past several years, the popularity of fish fries has grown tremendously, schools, club and athletic leagues have joined the trend and Saturday’s are often on the schedule now, too!
At a typical fish fry, you’ll be able to eat fish and chips, enjoy a few beers, bid on some amazing silent auction items, and play some black jack. Some are adults only, some are family friendly and most will even do takeout. The cost is around $15 per fish fry, which is much cheaper than a night out on the town…plus you can say you are eating, drinking, shopping, and gambling for the kids!
