Small Town Charm & Scenic River Front Views: Miamisburg

May 10, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

There is something for everyone in the city of Miamisburg. Food and drinks, shopping, outdoor activities, beautiful riverfront scenery, and a cold war secret or two.

Foodies – Start with coffee and breakfast at Curious Styles and Coffee Shop or Bear Creek Donuts. Bear Creek has earned 5 stars for their delicious donuts and pastries. Don’t stop at just a donut – try the donut cake or a glazed pretzel. Grab lunch at Bullwinkle’s Top Hat Bistro, or the world famous Hamburger Wagon. When you stay for dinner make your way to Ron’s Pizza Tavern & Patio for family-friendly options. For fine dining, make reservations at the Watermark and enjoy craft cocktails and mouth-watering meat, seafood and vegan dishes.

Cyclists – You will love the ease of parking at the Riverfront Park. It is the perfect place to start and end a trip on the bike trail. You can choose a short or long trip and cycle for miles and miles in either direction going north to West Carrollton and beyond, or south to Franklin. At the park there is a bike fix it station with everything you need to make sure your bike is in top shape. But if it needs some work – stop by Whitman’s Bike Way Bike Shop for a tune up (or how about a new ride?!).

River lovers – If you are looking to spend a day on the water – Miamisburg is perfect for that too. There is an easy to access kayak ramp at the Case Landing access point near the Linden Avenue bridge. If you want a short trip, take out at Rice Field.

Shoppers – There is plenty to smile about when you explore the shops along Main Street. M and Co. is a lively and creative specialty shop showcasing home accessories, gift merchandise and women’s accessories. Art lovers can find a new painting or take an art class at the Miamisburg Art Gallery. Or head right to Grandpa Jo’s Candy Shop to fill up at the candy buffet.

Explorers – Spend time at the Mound Cold War Discovery Center and climb to the top of the neighboring Adena Mound earthwork. Discover the scientific work of the Mound Laboratory. It is so top secret that some remains classified to this day. Named for the neighboring Adena Mound—one of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America—this government facility revolutionized Cold War, Nuclear Age, and Space Race history. The Mound earthwork is one of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America. Experts suggest the Adena culture built the earthwork between 800 B.C. and A.D. 100.

Craft Beer and Wine lovers – there is not one – but two – great craft breweries in Miamisburg: Lucky Star Brewery and Star City Brewing. Wine drinkers can have their fun too at A Taste of Wine. All three places are known for having great local musical talent.

Stay Overnight – And if you want to spend the night after your long, fun, day – stay at the English Manor Bed and Breakfast – a beautiful 1920’s Tudor mansion located on a tree-lined street in the heart of quiet Miamisburg. You’ll love the relaxed elegance of this stately home, which is graced with red oak polished floors, leaded and stained glass windows and Rookwood fireplaces. Every room is appointed with antiques and period furnishings, and a sweeping staircase leads up to spacious bedrooms and baths.

Once you visit, you will understand why Miamisburg is the Star City of the Riverway.

Hamburger Wagon Owner’s Plea for Help

February 12, 2019 By Dayton937 16 Comments

Jack Sperry and his daughters

Sometime life throws you curveballs.  For Jack Sperry, owner of the Hamburger Wagon he has thrived on meeting challenges head on and through hard work has typically achieved success.  He is now facing a new challenge, that is out of his control.

The Food Adventures Crew has known Jack since he was a standout football player at Centerville High School in the early eighties.  Jack is a supporter of Centerville and Miamisburg Schools and also helps run the Rock N Green Tomato Festival in Miamisburg, among other charitable events.

Jack is that prideful guy you know, who never asks anyone for help.  As irony would have it , he was was diagnosed 15 years ago with a kidney disease called “Berger’s Syndrome.”  The illness eventually damages kidney function, until the person needs a transplant.  That’s where Jack is at today.  His kidney function has fallen below a critical level, and dialysis and a transplant are eminent.

Jim Bucher left and Jack Sperry joke around the Hamburger Wagon

This is the passing along of a plea for help.  A plea from a lifelong Daytonian, in his time of need. We were going to write this article and explain the situation, but his brother Hank Sperry posted a Facebook message that was a perfect reach out for help.  Here it is:

“My name is Henry Sperry and I’m sending this message out on my brother’s Facebook account. I’ll get right to the point. I am looking for a hero to save my brother’s life. Please don’t turn away now. This won’t take much of your time to read. You may be the key to preserving the life of a man who is very much worth saving.

Jack recently got engaged

My brother is Jack Sperry. He is a beloved brother and the father of two beautiful teen-aged daughters, Alex and Emma Sperry. He is engaged to be married. He is an honorable man, a loyal friend to legions of people who are fortunate to know him. He is the proprietor of the famous Miamisburg, Ohio Hamburger Wagon.

15 years ago, Jack was diagnosed with Berger’s Syndrome (IgA Neuropathy), a kidney disease that occurs when a specific antibody lodges in one’s kidneys. THERE IS NO CURE. The disease slowly progresses over years until eventually, the kidneys cease functioning. When Jack was diagnosed, the hope was that the disease would progress so slowly that medical intervention would not be required in his lifetime.

Sadly this is not the case. His kidney function is below the critical threshold. It is time for serious medical intervention. Last fall, Jack’s local Nephrologist referred Jack to both the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University transplant centers. I am pleased to report that after thorough and comprehensive medical evaluations, Jack has been approved by both centers for organ transplant.

Ron Holp of Ron’s Pizza with pal Jack Sperry of the Hamburger Wagon

Jack has three options, but only one which offers the promise of a normal life expectancy. Option 1 is kidney dialysis. While this option does extend life expectancy, it is burdensome and for someone Jack’s age, the average life expectancy on dialysis is 10 years. Option 2 is a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. But the wait for such a donor can be up to 5 years. The average useful life expectancy of a deceased donor transplant is 10 – 15 years.

By far the most favorable option is the third one, live donor transplant. Live donor transplants can last 20 – 25 years (even longer). Such a transplant would carry Jack into his late 70’s or even his 80’s, allowing him the joy of walking his daughters down the aisle, sharing love and life with his grandchildren, continuing to cherish his friends and family, and giving him the opportunity to pay forward the generosity of the hero who saved him.

Jack in front of the Hamburger Wagon with friend Gary.

I, as well as my other brother, Bob Sperry, would give up a kidney in a minute. Unfortunately, our own health issues have prevented us from being candidates.

That’s why we are turning to you. We realize this is a BIG ASK. But this is literally a chance for you to save the life of at least one – and perhaps two – human beings. That’s because you don’t have to be a direct match to Jack. Both medical centers are part of a national sharing chain whereby a non-matching kidney is donated and then Jack would receive a matching kidney immediately, no waiting.

I am not ready to write an obituary. There is so much life ahead for Jack, if someone is willing to answer the call. PLEASE consider making this gift. Think about the magnitude of this opportunity! You have the chance to give a decent, loving, honorable man the ability to share and experience a full life! We are looking for a hero and an angel.

Recent photo of Jack and his kids

This quest has obviously raised a number of questions. People ask me how Jack is doing now. Other than very poor kidney function, he is doing fairly well. He is not yet on dialysis but certainly headed there. He still works every day and other than fatigue from time to time, life is fairly normal and routine for him currently. People ask me how kidney donors do post transplant . The surgical/medical teams we’ve spoken with say kidney donors do just fine after transplant. As a rule of thumb, a healthy person with 100% kidney function will see their overall function drop to around 80% post transplant and should continue that level of function for the remainder of their lifetime. Jack’s current kidney function is less than 20% and he currently has no discernible symptoms.

Jack and his fiancee

Finally, people have asked how to go forward if interested in being a potential donor for Jack with either the University of Cincinnati or Ohio State University transplant centers. The process simply begins with a phone call or going on-line. For both Medical Centers you will need Jack’s legal name which is John P. Sperry and his birthdate which is March 4, 1963.

For the Ohio State Program:
Call 1-800-293-8965 Option #3

For the University of Cincinnati Program:
Log into: www.uchealth.com/Transplant or you can call UC Health’s waitlist coordinator, Beth Sanders, at (513) 584-0784.

Father / Daughter event

As mentioned earlier, I know this is a HUGE ASK and understandably perhaps too big of one for many of you. That’s okay. My intention is not to give anyone a guilt trip. My goal is simply to get the word out to as many as people as possible so that a potential hero for my brother can be found. Even if you aren’t interested in being a donor, would you mind sharing this with your contacts in some shape or form so that the word can be spread?

From all of us who love Jack Sperry, God bless you.”

From all of us at Food Adventures, we hope someone sees this who can save the day.   With a new fiancee, and 2 daughters, Jack is still very active and community involved.  We are staying positive that things will work out for him and his prayers will be answered.

Jack and his family need a hero, could it be you ?

Jack, working at the Hamburger Wagon

WHAT IS CORHOLE YOU SAY ?????

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE GAME OF CORNHOLE:
—
It is essentially a bean bag toss towards a board, 33 feet away

— You get 4 bean bag tosses each turn

— Object is to accumulate points by throwng your bag into the hole, or landing it on the board

— The strategy is to also keep your opponent from scoring points

— The first team to score 21 points, wins

The following is a list of terms commonly used in cornhole.  (For the record, we at Food Adventures have been using words like “Dirty Rollup” and “Slippery Granny” for years under different circumstances).

  • Ace or cow pie: A bag landing on the board, worth one point.
  • Back door or Dirty Rollup: A cornhole bag that rolls over the top of a blocker and into the hole.
  • Backstop: A bag that lands past the hole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.
  • Blocker: A bag that lands in front of the hole, blocking the hole.
  • Cornfusion: When players or teams cannot agree on the scoring
  • Cornhole: A bag that falls in the hole, which is worth three points.
  • Cornucopia: A player possessing a wide variety of skills

Green Beer served at Ron’s Pizza Tavern

  • Dirty bag: A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.
  • Flop: Type of toss without rotation or spin.

  • Grasshopper: A bag that bounces off the grass or ground and lands on the board for a point.
  • Screaming Eagle: A bag that flys beyond the board without hitting the board.
  • Slippery Granny: Scoring three bags in a row on the board only.
  • Gusher, double deuce, Cornholio, or Four Bagger: Four cornholes by a single player in a single round.
  • Hanger: A bag on the lip of the hole ready to drop.
  • Hooker: A bag hitting the board and hooking or curving around into the hole.
  • Jumper: A bag that strikes another bag on the board causing it to bounce up into the hole.
  • Leprechaun or Clover: When a player attains all four bags onto the board without getting any into the hole.
  • Po-lice: The cornhole referee
  • Sally or Shortbag: A weak toss that and lands on the ground before reaching the board.
  • Shucker: When a player throws a bag and it knocks an opponent’s bag off the board.
  • Skunk, whitewash or shutout: A game that ends in an 11–0 score.
  • Slider or a White Castle: A cornhole bag that slides into the hole.
  • Swish: A bag that goes directly in the hole without touching the board.
  • Shotgun: Throwing all your bags at once.

This isn’t just a great day for Cornhole. It is a great opportunity for a Food Adventure.  And that’s what we will be there for.. Food and live music…

July 18, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

How you doin little lady ?

Elvis!  It’s Elvis, I say.. as the 60 something year old woman reached for his chest and and tore a piece of his clothing off.

Yes, people will be doing a double take Saturday July 23rd at the Rock n Green Tomato Festival in Miamisburg.  The feature afternoon act, after a day of music is a 14 piece Elvis Tribute Band.  They sound great.

“Elvis,” played by Ryan Roth is a throwback to the era when Elvis played Las Vegas.

Sequin capes, bawdy gyrations, and that signature hairdo is what you can expect to see.  What you will hear is a complicated back up band called “The Comeback Special.”

“The King” is coming to Miamisburg?

Come out and hear tunes like “Suspicious Minds,”  ” Hunka Hunka Burning Love.”  Don’t forget classics like “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock.”

This concert is just one of the sights and sounds at Rock N Green Tomato Festival at Riverfront Park in downtown Miamisburg.  So bring a lawnchair, grab some food and drink at the vendors, then sit and enjoy the live bands!

We wanted to dress Hungry Jax up like Priscilla Presley, but she would have none of it.

This is the 6th Annual Rock N Green Tomato Festival, and the Cornhole tournament has become a tradition as well.  This is one of Dayton’s biggest tournaments, but the atmosphere is laid back and background activities are live bands and food and craft vendors.   It is a perfect chance to bring the family, a few lawn chairs and let them listen to the free music and enjoy the kids activities as well.

Grab a Green Beer before or after at Ron’s Pizza

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON CORNHOLE:

— It is essentially a bean bag toss towards a board, 33 feet away

— You get 4 bean bag tosses each turn

— Object is to accumulate points by throwng your bag into the hole, or landing it on the board

— The strategy is to also keep your opponent from scoring points

— The first team to score 21 points, wins

The following is a list of terms commonly used in cornhole.  (For the record, we at Food Adventures have been using words like “Dirty Rollup” and “Slippery Granny” for years under different circumstances).

  • Ace or cow pie: A bag landing on the board, worth one point.

    Throwing the bags

  • Back door or Dirty Rollup: A cornhole bag that rolls over the top of a blocker and into the hole.
  • Backstop: A bag that lands past the hole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.
  • Have you ever thrown a “Slippery Granny?”

Blocker: A bag that lands in front of the hole, blocking the hole.

  • Cornfusion: When players or teams cannot agree on the scoring
  • Cornhole: A bag that falls in the hole, which is worth three points.
  • Cornucopia: A player possessing a wide variety of skills
  • Dirty bag: A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.
  • Flop: Type of toss without rotation or spin.

    Full House

    It’s a family affair

  • Sally or Shortbag: A weak toss that and lands on the ground before reaching the board.
  • Shucker: When a player throws a bag and it knocks an opponent’s bag off the board.
  • Skunk, whitewash or shutout: A game that ends in an 11–0 score.
  • Slider or a White Castle: A cornhole bag that slides into the hole.
  • Swish: A bag that goes directly in the hole without touching the board.

Elvis Tribute band will be performing

  • Shotgun: Throwing all your bags at once.

This isn’t just a great day for Cornhole. It is a great opportunity for a Food Adventure.  And that’s what we will be there for.. Food and live music…

THROWDOWN ! June 9th: Voltzy’s vs. The Hamburger Wagon

June 5, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Legend vs. Legend… Icon vs Icon .. At the Rock N Green Tomato Festival in Miamisburg on Saturday, June 9th, their will be a battle of epic proportions.  Two Dayton burger favorites will battle it out in an Old Fashioned Throwdown, and Dayton will never be the same.   The match up is VOLTZY’s vs THE HAMBURGER WAGON !  They will go toe to toe in a brawl to settle it all, and each burger joint is depending on your vote!

To vote in this clash of the burger titans, you have to go the Rock N’ Green Tomato Festival, which is in downtown Miamisburg, near Ron’s Pizza.  The contest begins June 9th at 1pm.  Buy a burger from both places and cast your vote.  The winner will be announced sometime around 8pm.

The first three votes cast will be Hungry Jax, Chef House and The Big Ragu, here they are….

HUNGRY JAX VOTE:    THE HAMBURGER WAGON is the best !  “The Hamburger Wagon” is a great display of simplicity in its finest form.  It doesn’t need to be masqueraded in sauces.  This crispy little burger is topped with pepper, a pickle, and an onion slice the size of a car’s hubcap.  The Hamburger Wagon has been serving up the best burgers for almost 100 years.  The Hamburger Wagon gets my vote !”  —Jax

THE BIG RAGU’S VOTE:   VOLTZY’S is the best !  “Voltzy’s melts in your mouth.  I love a burger that has good condiments and cooked onions.  Voltzy’s burgers are ground fresh everyday and never frozen, so it is a great tasting burger.  In fact, Voltzy’s is the best burger I have ever eaten!  Plus, you have to love the fact that each burger is cooked by the master himself, Voltzy!  I love them both, but VOLTZY’S gets my vote !!”— The Big Ragu

CAST YOUR VOTE  at the Rock  N Green Tomato Festival on Saturday, June 9th and be there when Voltzy’s and The Hamburger Wagon collide .

For more details on the festival, please visit rockngreentomato.com.

Feel free to leave your comments and thoughts below about this THROWDOWN!!

Food Adventures: Small Bites for 4/5/2012

April 5, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Food Adventures with the Big Ragu and Crew: Another installation of  “Small Bites.”

Here in “Small Bites,” we feature some of our favorite food items across the Dayton area.  We are not food critics, we love to eat.  Often imitated never duplicated, we set out to let you know about some of the better eats around the area that you may not know about !

Owners Rick “Voltzy” & Jack Sperry Want Your Vote to Decide!

THROWDOWN: VOLTZY’S vs. THE HAMBURGER WAGON, on  Saturday June 9, 2012

Our first small bite is actually a coming attraction.  Two of the most popular burger joints in the Dayton area are going to have an old fashioned “Throwdown!” at the Rock n’ Green Tomato Festival in Miamisburg, Ohio.  The Hamburger Wagon of Miamisburg will go toe to toe with Voltzy’s Rootbeer Stand of Moraine.  Get to this festival and cast your vote on Saturday June 9th.  Who will win this burger brawl to settle it all ??  We visited with Voltzy’s owner Rick Volz and the Hamburger Wagon owner Jack Sperry, and they both think they are going to win !  The Throwdown  is in the early stages, so there will be more details in the coming weeks.  Look for a follow up feature story from the Big Ragu in May right here on DaytonMostMetro, when we will cast our votes for the best burger!

THE SANDWICHES at JIMMIES LADDER 11:

The Ladder 11 Sandwich

Are you looking for a great, casual bar and grill that serves up top notch sandwiches?  Food Adventures recommends that you try Jimmie’s Ladder 11 on Brown Street.  Jimmie’s ladder 11 resides in an old renovated 1892 firehouse and is full of atmosphere.  They also make some amazing sandwiches.  One of our favorite sandwiches is the Ladder 11 which consists of Romanian Style Pastrami, Corned Beef, Hand Cut Cole Slaw, and House Russian Dressing on Rye.  The menu has a large variety of sandwiches, pastas, and some incredible appetizers.  Try the creole cheesecake…… you will not be sorry.  Jimmies Ladder 11 is located at 936 Brown Street across from Miami Valley Hospital.  For more information, check out jladder11.com.

THE CREPES at CREPE BOHEME at the 2nd Street Market:

Veggie Crepe

From the crepes in Paris, France to a Chocolate Crepe from a street vendor.  We have been fans ever since!  Fortunately for us, we have Crepe Boheme located at the 2nd Street Market in Downtown Dayton. Today we even opt for for a Vegetarian Crepe rather than the crepes made with Nutella.  The Crepe-Master Sabine skillfully pours the thin layer of batter on the hot plate and the magic begins.  We suggest you try a create your own crepe you with:  Spinach, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Brie and an incredible Red Pepper Sauce.  For the carnivores out there, you can always try the Black Forest Ham Crepe.  This crepe is packed with Black Forest Ham, Brie, and topped with Mushrooms.  Give Crepe Boheme a try and you will be hooked!

THE 2 FISH OR CHICKEN SANDWICHES FOR 2 BUCKS at RALLY’s:

Rally’s: 2 Nice Sized Fish Sandwiches for 2 Bucks

Two dolla to make you holla!  We don’t usually write about fast food chains, but every once in a great while, we will see something worth mentioning.  Such is the case with the current deal at Rally’s Hamburgers, the infamous double drive-thru place.  The Big Ragu’s obsession with fast food had him doing a double take.  Rally’s has a deal of 2 fish or chicken sandwiches for 2 bucks total.  The sandwiches aren’t tiny either.  The bang for your buck is great.  Satisfy your hunger for 2 dollars?  When is the last time that happened?  Other monster chains are charging around 4 bucks for the same thing, so make sure you stop in at Rally’s for this fantastic deal during the Lenten season.

Food Adventures Crosses Paths with the Hamburger Wagon

September 22, 2011 By Dayton937 2 Comments

In the past few years, we have noticed an influx of restaurants in Dayton claiming to sell “gourmet” hamburgers.   Many of these places allow you to add fried eggs, avocados, and even fried pickles to your burger for an additional cost.  We have enjoyed Food Adventures while pigging out of these places of course, but The Big Ragu and Crew are simple creatures, who like their burgers made simple.  If you are like us and want a great “old school” style hamburger, you need to head down to the Hamburger Wagon in downtown Miamisburg, Ohio.  The little white cart with the red awning is an institution in Miamisburg that has been serving up hamburgers since Dayton’s Great Flood almost a hundred years ago.

It all started in 1913, when a tremendous flood devastated the city, leaving many houses  and lives destroyed.  Thousands of people ended up living in tent cities.   Hot food was pretty sparse and this led Sherman “Cocky” Porter to dig out his families recipe for hamburgers and pass them out to flood victims.  The people loved the burgers so much, Porter decided to sell them on Saturdays in a little “Hamburger Wagon.”  They have been serving burgers ever since.

Smashing the deep fried burgers, and laying out the buns

Our endless journey for special dining places, led us to the “Burg” to enjoy some of Porter’s incredible hamburgers.  When Food Adventures arrived at the Hamburger Wagon, we were pretty happy to see only two people ahead of us in line.   If you have ever gone to the Hamburger Wagon on a weekend, there is usually a continuous line of people waiting to indulge in these wonderful hamburgers.  We decided to look over the menu and that literally took about 2 seconds. The menu has only four items on it: a single, a double, potato chips, and pop.   We didn’t dare ask for cheese because the sign states “No stinkin’ cheese or sloppy sauces”.  Hungry Jax was bummed about the no cheese rule while a sauce loving Ragu had to come to terms with the fact that he can’t destroy this hamburger with his usual arsenal of sauces.  We decided to comfort each other and go on with the Food Adventure.  We each ordered three burgers, a bag of chips, and soda.  We stood back and watched the magic happen.

Bun, burger, onion, pickle, pepper.. it’s that simple

Each little burger is thrown in a deep cast iron pan of hot grease and cooked up until it is nice and crispy.  Just imagine how large the Big Ragu’s eyes got when he saw the hamburgers go in the old fashioned deep fryer!  Once the burgers are done cooking, they are thrown on a bun, topped with a pickle slice, onion, and a dash of pepper.  The burgers are then tossed into a paper sack and placed in our bratwurst looking fingers.  No wraps, just a napkin or two.  Maybe the lack of post cooking packaging is the way that the Hamburger Wagon shows they care about the environment.

The dining room choices are about as plentiful as the menu: you can either sit in your car or enjoy a nice cozy park bench.  It was a beautiful day out and we decided to sprawl out on the park bench and enjoy the weather and the burgers.  We absolutely loved the fact that we didn’t have to waste precious gorging time removing the piping hot burgers from any wrappers.   We were amazed just how good these hamburgers tasted.  We are considering starting a petition to rename the city Miamisburger.  We don’t exactly know what the recipe is, but we were told it’s a combination of hamburger, sausage, and corn flakes.  Whatever the recipe is, it’s absolutely amazing!  One of the most appealing things about the burgers is the “crunch factor.”  They are already crunchy from being deep fried and when you add the pickles and onions, the sandwich is taken to a whole new level.  Trust us when we say that these are some of the tastiest and most unique burgers that you will try.

Click on the incredible hamburger for a closer view

The next time that you are near Miamisburg, we highly recommend checking out the iconic Hamburger Wagon.  If you have been to the wagon, then we “spoke” too soon (groan).  The food is one of a kind, and you won’t go bankrupt while feeding your family. A single burger, bag of chips, and can of pop each cost $1.10 and a double burger rings up at $2.20.  We like this place so much we were sizing up how to roll the wagon away with us.  Maybe they would at least let us ride around in it for a while for a real Food Adventure.

Sometimes, good things can come out of a tragedy.  Due to an event like the 1913 flood, your grateful foodies The Food Adventure Crew, are able to enjoy these little hamburgers, with the big taste, today.

Have you been to the Hamburger Wagon?  If so, what are your thoughts on this legendary eatery in Miamisburg?
