McDonald’s To Host ‘Bacon Hour’

January 23, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

MickeyD’s will be hosting a bacon happy hour  on Tuesday, January 29th from 4-5pm !

That’s right, for one hour only, the fast-food chain will hold a “Bacon Hour” so customers in participating stores across the country can put free thick-cut, Applewood-smoked bacon on anything they order from the McDonald’s menu.

Yes you read that right, free bacon.

On anything.

In the entire McDonald’s menu.

Want bacon on your Chicken McNuggets? Sure thing, buddy, go knock yourself out.

Bacon on a Filet-O-Fish? Aquaman just might approve.

Bacon on a Hot Caramel Sundae? Surprisingly salty stuff goes really well with sweet treats.

The limited time event is meant to promote the Jan. 30 nationwide launch of McDonald’s new trio of bacon items: the Big Mac Bacon burger, Quarter Pounder Bacon burger and Cheesy Bacon Fries. Both burgers will come with three slices of bacon each while the Cheesy Bacon Fries will come with bacon bits.

Shamrock Shakes Are Here- With Four New Options!

February 7, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

They make their appearance every February, and for millions of Shamrock Shake Fanatics these minty, greet sweet treats are the first sign of spring.

The first Shamrock Shake debuted in 1970 as the St. Patrick’s Day Shake. In 1974, proceeds from the beverage’s sale helped to fund the first Ronald McDonald’s House in Philadelphia. That city is currently the nation’s leader in Shamrock Shake sales.

This year McDonald’s has upped the ante, offering 5 different Shamrock options available starting today (Feb 7th) through St Patricks’s day:

Shamrock Shake: vanilla soft serve, mint syrup, whipped topping, but this year it may come with a sprinkle of granulated green sugar and a cherry.

Chocolate Shamrock Shake: half a chocolate shake (on the bottom) and half a Shamrock Shake layered on top.

Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappé: mocha frappe with whipped topping, green sugar and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

Shamrock Hot Chocolate: a blend of milk and chocolate syrup, but with the addition of mint syrup, too.

Shamrock Mocha: similar to the Hot Chocolate, but comes up with a shot espresso.

McDonald’s is on a journey to be better and part of that journey is a commitment to evolving our food and beverage offerings,” Jeanette DeBartolo, a McDonald’s spokeswoman shared. “McDonald’s changes have touched our food and restaurant experience to better meet the changing needs of our customers.”

— CHICKEN BISCUIT: A full country biscuit houses this fried chicken patty.  Here is a tip, order it with honey, it will make your mouth water.  This is the most filling of the three sandwiches.

— CHICKEN MCMUFFIN: This sandwich is, of course, a fried chicken patty on a toasted English Muffin.  We love to try this one with a little bit of mayo, so ask for a packet.   Bring some crunch into your morning with this winner.

HONORABLE MENTION: Don’t forget to order a hash brown to go along with your sandwich.  Want to get a little wacky?  Put the hash brown inside the sandwich like the Big Ragu does.  We call this creation a “McChicken ‘n Tater” sandwich.

So, next time you are on the go, and pull into the Golden Arches, remember these Food Adventure tips.  For about 2 bucks you can grab a good sandwich.  They are great as is, but if you want to doctor them up, consider ordering them with cheese and honey.  Even order them with mayo depending on your condiment preferences.  Remember, they aren’t just for breakfast anymore, since McDonald’s serves them up all day.

Fast Food’s 5 Monster Burgers

September 7, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Super Big Boy from Frisch’s is the Best

Food Adventures leaves no plate unturned.  We eat it all and have no rules.  Sure, most of our stories highlight locally owned eateries with food that we have fallen in love with.   From time to time we will go off track and do our tongue in cheek take on chain restaurants, or in this case the dreaded “fast food chains”

Fast food is a guilty pleasure for many, and a way to grab a quick bite in a pinch…. even these chains go crazy touting deals or big specials.   Today, we go all out and try  some of their biggest creations and we don’t count a calorie.  These are the “Monsters of the Meatway” if you will.  These are the “Big Daddys of the burger industry,” and we aren’t afraid to rank ’em in order.   They are the always huge, sometimes sloppy, sandwiches that will never have you asking “where’s the beef?’

Sit back, loosen your belt, and indulge on these must eats.  Food

The Double Whopper from Burger King is a good one

Adventures presents the jaw dropping, must eat, top 5 “monster” burgers of the fast food industry:

FAST FOOD’S 5 MONSTER BURGERS:

1) “THE SUPER BIG BOY” at FRISCH’S RESTAURANTS:
The supersized version of the American favorite “Big Boy” burger. This one has the same amount of cheese, but 2 bigger patties, more lettuce and most imporantly, more of that unbelievable Frisch’s tartar sauce. It is a 1/2 pound of beef on the signature double decker bun, and it aims to please. It does just that and makes the grade as our #1 pick!

The Triple Cheeseburger from Wendy’s

2) “THE DOUBLE WHOPPER SANDWICH” from BURGER KING:
Another giant version of a popular burger, the flame broiled “double whopper” is a very filling sandwich. Over the year’s the regular whopper has been shrinking in size. This burger is a push back towards yesteryear. The hearty, sesame seed bun finally gets challenged and does the job, strongly holding the lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, cheese and mayo together. The secret to this sandwich is the griled taste that is unmatched in the fast food world.

3) “DAVE’S TRIPLE CHEESEBURGER” at WENDY’S:
Not one, not two, but THREE patties, each one weighing a quarter of a pound make up this masterpiece. This “brick of beef” is packed with cheese and loaded with lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles, ketchup, and onion. The soft bun holds this massive monster together. This sandwich is bursting with flavor but is not for the squeamish, as it has the most amount of meat in our list.

4) “THE BIG BUFORD” from RALLY’S:

The Big Buford from Rally’s

Two “seasoned and seared” beef patties on a bun with all the fixins. That means cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and onions served on a premium, sesame seed bun. Grab a napkin, this fast food freakshow likes to drip condiments on your hands and shirt. Probably the most bang for your buck on the list, as Rally’s is known for good prices.  It is a Food Adventure on a bun.

5) “THE 2/3rd POUND MONSTER THICKBURGER with CHEESE” from HARDEE’S:
We were surprised to find out this burger had the word “monster” in its name. It must be fate, so it rounds out our list.  This is the only “bacon burger” on our list. It features two 1/3 lb. charbroiled 100% Black Angus beef patties, 4 strips of bacon, 3 slices of American cheese and mayonnaise. The bun is heralded as “fresh baked.”  It doesn’t matter though because the lack of condiments on this one makes the burger pretty much uneatable.  This sandwich is just all meat, no toppings.  Pretty gross unless you are a pure carnivore.

Hardee’s Monster Thickburger – just gross…

There you have it.  The “plumpest patties on a bun,” the “biggest boys of the drive thru” ranked in order.

How did we do?  Did we nail it, or did we leave out one of the gargantuan bundles of meat on a bun?

Give us your feedback and remember this list was for FAST FOOD chains only ….

Zesty Ranch Early Favorite for McDonald’s Shakin’ Flavor

June 10, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Chipotle BBQ Dusted McNuggets. Dip them in BBQ sauce

The feedback is in from the Shakin’ Flavor event at the Wilmington Pike McDonald’s last Monday.  The VIP guests at the Food Adventure were given Mcdonald’s swag and asked to test the flavors for themselves.   We found patrons loved all three flavors CHIPOTLE BBQ, GARLIC PARMESAN, and ZESTY RANCH.  It seemed the favorite this night was Zesty Ranch.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fast Food executives have long known that the Dayton area is much more inclined to give new fast food products an initial try.  Much more than the conservative tastebuds of Cincinnati or even Columbus.  That is why in Dayton, we see many test products here before they go national.  In other words, Dayton is an open minded, foodie town full of feed back (applaud yourselves).

HERE’S THE SKINNY on SHAKIN’ FLAVORS:

— McDonald’s new Shakin’ Flavor product is a free packet of seasonings that will be an option with any Chicken McNugget order or  large French Fry order.  Your choice of flavor is  CHIPOTLE BBQ, GARLIC PARMESAN, or ZESTY RANCH

— A extra “shakin” bag is given to the customer and  a powdered packet, and the rest is simple.  Dump the fries or McNuggets into the bag, and then the seasoning.  Close the bag and shake it like a pom-pom.  The result is pretty evenly seasoned fries or nuggets.  For more even results, after shaking,  we suggest laying the bag flat and tearing open rather than dumping the food out of the bag.

This is a great distraction for kids.  Hungry Jax found her children caught up in the excitement, and loved it as much as the yogurt in the kid’s meal.

Kids love the new Shakin Flavors and love to “Shake it Up”

The Big Ragu loved the Chipotle BBQ and Garlic Parmesan. It brought a new dimension to the nuggets and fries

MUST EATS:

Experiment with your own tastes, but we found a couple faves’ you gotta try.

— CHIPOTLE BBQ NUGGETS DIPPED IN BBQ SAUCE

— ZESTY RANCH FRENCH FRIES

— GARLIC PARMESAN NUGGETS DIPPED IN RANCH SAUCE

Get to select Golden Arches and shake things up.  Not every McDonald’s has them, but they are worth a try.  They bake ’em, you shake ’em, your flavor, make sure you savor !

Peace out to Ronald McDonald and the crew for their hospitality and the revolving videos showing how nuggets and burgers are made.

They’re Back….Shamrock Shakes!

February 24, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

MAC-11-454-Shamrock-Shake-Banner-Ad-300-X-250After this amount of snowfall, you’re probably not interested in hearing about anything else frosty heading your way. But before you run for your shovels, know this one comes with a straw. Yes, McDonald’s has brought back the brightly colored green Shamrock Shake! Which also means March, and warmer weather, is drawing nearer.

Much like the beloved McRib, devoted fans often look forward to the return of this seasonal drink, which stays on menus until a week after St. Patrick’s Day.  The shake — low-fat vanilla ice cream and mint flavoring — leaves more of a legacy than just a green tongue. It was first introduced in 1970 as the “St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake.”

Some of us might remember seeing commercials in the late ’70s when the shake was touted by O’Grimacey, a big, green, amorphouab4234739393b8947283746b5f27cf1bs Golden Arches mascot who sported an Irish accent and visited his nephew in McDonaldland every year for St. Paddy’s Day.

Obviously that name wasn’t catchy enough and was scrapped years later for the more alliterative Shamrock Shake. But the beginnings of the Shamrock Shake are a bigger part of McDonald’s history than you might know.

In 1974, after years of watching his 3-year-old daughter undergo treatment for leukemia and effectively living at St. Christopher’s Hospital For Children, Philadelphia Eagles player Fred Hill thought there should be a better way. He reached out to the community to raise money for families that couldn’t afford hotel rooms while their sick children were being treated. The Eagles’ GM connected with a local McDonald’s ad agency and the restaurant’s regional manager, and together they created the St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake promotion

It was perfect: The milkshakes were green – the Eagles’ color! With the support of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc and regional manager Ed Rensi, Tuckerman launched a week-long promotion around the Shamrock Shake, with all profits to be donated to the cause.
030c6edb1eec6429b4c13a097ad9ce17

Proceeds from the seasonal promotion sales went to purchase a four-story, seven-bedroom house Evans had found near the hospital in Philadelphia, a “home away from home” for families dealing with a sick child.

This became the very first Ronald McDonald House.

Now that’s a reason to celebrate the return of the Shamrock Shake!

McDonald’s Perks Up Miami Valley With Free Coffee

September 15, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

coffee newFrom September 16 through 29, guests can get a free small McCafé coffee during breakfast hours at participating McDonald’s restaurants throughout the Miami Valley. This event builds on McDonald’s first-ever Free Coffee Event launched last March, where the company gave away millions of cups of free coffee during the two-week period.

“With our second Free Coffee program, we’re continuing to encourage people to try our McCafé blend and rewarding longtime guests with a free cup of coffee with their favorite McDonald’s breakfast,” said Jeremy Hamilton, President, McDonald’s Restaurants of the Miami Valley. “We were thrilled to offer a free cup of McCafé coffee during our first Free Coffee Event earlier this year and we look forward to sharing a great cup of coffee with the Miami Valley this fall.”

McDonald’s first launched its McCafé line in the U.S. in 2009. The collection included McCafé signature blend coffee and quickly expanded to include iced coffees, espresso-based drinks, such as lattes and mochas, blended-ice beverages including smoothies and frappes as well as limited-time seasonal offerings.  This holiday season, customers can again enjoy the White Chocolate Mocha, in addition to the new White Chocolate Latte and Hot Chocolate, for a limited-time.

McCafé fans in the  Miami Valley and nationwide will soon be able to enjoy their coffee whenever they want, including at home. McDonald’s recently announced a collaboration with Kraft Foods Group, Inc. to offer a variety of McCafé ground, whole bean and single cup coffees in grocery stores and other retailers nationwide starting in early 2015.

Free Breakfast Coffee at McDonald’s Through April 13th

March 31, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

149155_170676636284530_3435237_aCoffee, java, morning mocha– whatever you call it, you can get a free cup of it at McDonalds on Monday.

The campaign, which kicks off today, Monday March 31st and will give customers at participating restaurants a 12-ounce small coffee at no charge through April 13. It will be up to each McDonald’s location to decide if customers get just one cup or refills on the free coffee.

McDonald’s coffee gimmick follows  Taco Bell’s breakfast rollout of its first-ever breakfast menu, which it dubbed as the “largest menu expansion in Taco Bell’s 50-year history.”  Taco Bell’s move could take a big bite out of Mickey D’s breakfast sales. While McDonald’s remains the country’s largest fast-food chain, it is trying out new things in an effort to stay on top.

McDonald’s said the free coffee is its way of encouraging new guests to try McCafe Coffee and “surprising them in unexpected ways all year long.” The company said that starting in mid-April, it will surprise a Twitter follower every day for the year with McCafe coffee and prizes.

The McRib Is Back at McDonald’s

December 19, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

McRib_120712_2-1Rarely does fast food evoke such passionate conversations.  It seems to have a cult following of fans that crave it and another group of folks who just shake their head and wonder why it continues to make a comeback. The legendary boneless pork sandwich is both a marvel of meat molding and a marketing phenomenon. It’s worked it’s way from the golden arches menu  to The Simpsons” (as the Ribwich) and on David Letterman’s Top 10 lists.

It was introduced ito the McDonald’s menu n 1982, and was removed  1985.  In the 90’s it started making coming back “for a limited time” and  McRib even has its own Facebook page.  Google it and you’ll find tons of articles on it, including this one below:

11 Amazing Facts about the McDonald’s McRib

Business InsiderBy Dina Spector and Kim Bhasin | Business Insider – Mon, Dec 17, 2012 12:02 PM EST

1. The McRib came about because of a shortage of chickens.

In a 2009 interview with Maxim, Rene Arend, McDonald’s first executive chef and inventor of the Chicken McNugget, explains that the McNugget was so popular when it was first introduced in 1979 that demand quickly outstripped chicken supply.

The legendary pork sandwich was developed out of necessity. Franchises that didn’t have the Chicken McNugget needed a new hot-selling product — and that’s when Arend scrambled back to the test kitchen.

2. The McRib was inspired by Southern BBQ.

Flickr/Southern Foodways AllianceRene Arend modeled the McRib after the barbecue-sauce-slathered pork sandwiches he ate during a visit to Charleston, South Carolina.

The decorated French-trained chef, who oncewhipped up fancy culinary creations for the Drake Hotel, is also credited with coming up the unique shape of the sandwich.

Although the McRib doesn’t contain a single bone, Arend suggested the meat be patterned after a slab of ribs instead of the classic round patty.

3. The McRib is a product of “restructured meat technology.”

Rene Arend came up with the idea and design of the McRib, but it’s a professor from the University of Nebraska named Richard Mandigo who developed the “restructured meat product” that the McRib is actually made of.

According to an article from Chicago magazine, which cites a 1995 article by Mandigo, “restructured meat product” contains a mixture of tripe, heart, and scalded stomach, which is then mixed with salt and water to extract proteins from the muscle. The proteins bind all the pork trimmings together so that it can be re-molded into any specific shape — in this case, a fake slab of ribs.

4. The whole process from fresh pork to frozen McRib takes about 45 minutes.

Director of McDonald’s U.S. supply chain Rob Cannell explained how regular pig gets transformed into the famed McRib in an interview with Maxim: “The McRib is made in large processing plants—lots of stainless steel, a number of production lines, and these long cryogenic freezers. The pork meat is chopped up, then seasoned, then formed into that shape that looks like a rib back. Then we flash-freeze it. The whole process from fresh pork to frozen McRib takes about 45 minutes.”

5. The entire McRib sandwich contains about 70 ingredients — including a flour-bleaching agent used in yoga mats.

Flickr/Calgary ReviewsAs it appears out of the box, the McRib sandwich consists of just five basic components: a pork patty, barbecue sauce, pickle slices, onions, and a sesame bun.

But, as recently reported by Time magazine, a closer inspection of McDonald’s owningredient list reveals that the pork sandwich contains a total of 70 ingredients. This includes azodicarbonamide, a flour-bleaching agent often used in the production of foamed plastics.

The entire sandwich packs a whopping 500 calories, 26 grams of fat, 44 grams of carbs, and 980 milligrams of sodium.

6. The McRib debuted in 1981, disappeared in 1985, and has resurfaced from time-to-time since 1994.

Depending on where you read, McDonald’s introduced the boneless pork sandwich sometime between 1981 and 1982. The fast-food concoction vanished in 1985, only to reappear as a limited-edition item in 1994.

The McRib has become something of a legend for its on-and-off appearances on McDonald’s menus. The fleeting nature of the sandwich has generated a cult-like following.

7. Individual restaurants can actually order the ingredients for the McRib at any time.

The McRib pops up at McDonald’s locations across the country sporadically. It’s so random because the individual restaurants are able to offer the McRib whenever they feel like it. The practice has even inspired websites devoted to tracking McRib availability across the nation.

8. McDonald’s keeps the McRib scarce because the sandwich’s entire brand relies on it.

McDonald’s has always known about its customers’ weird obsession for the sandwich, and its marketing completely leverages the McRib’s scarcity. Take its “Save The McRib” campaign in 2010, where it encouraged McRib fans to go online and sign a petition to keep the sandwich around for a while longer.

But a strategy like that only works with something that’s as popular as the McRib is. If you make an unknown item scarce, nobody’s going to care.

9. It’d be incredibly difficult for McDonald’s to create more McRib-esque products, because that cult-like following is so hard to replicate.

McRib lovers are fanatical, but it wouldn’t be this way if the phenomenon hadn’t had decades to marinate in the hearts and minds of its fans. A wholly devoted fanbase for a new product would take years to develop, and even then, there’s no guarantee that it would work.

McDonald’s struck gold with the McRib, and it doesn’t want to do anything to affect its brand. Even now, by offering the McRib nationwide twice just a year apart, it’s walking a fine line. At what point will consumers get sick of it?

10. There’s also speculation that the McRib is really just a big commodity trade by McDonald’s.

The Awl’s Willey Staley argues that whenever the sandwich springs up, hog prices are almost always in a trough.

Here’s more of his argument on why McDonald’s behaves like a trader: “Fast food involves both hideously violent economies of scale and sad, sad end users who volunteer to be taken advantage of. What makes the McRib different from this everyday horror is that a) McDonald’s is huge to the point that it’s more useful to think of it as a company trading in commodities than it is to think of it as a chain of restaurants b) it is made of pork, which makes it a unique product in the QSR world and c) it is only available sometimes, but refuses to go away entirely.”

11. Animal rights group sues McRib meat supplier over inhumane treatment of pigs.

Not everyone is ecstatic about the return of the McRib. Last November, the Humane Society of the United States filed a lawsuit against Smithfield Foods, the pork supplier of McDonald’s McRib meat, claiming the meat distributor houses its pigs in unethical farm conditions.

A 2010 undercover investigation by the animal rights group shows pigs crammed into gestation crates covered in blood and baby pigs being tossed into carts like rag dolls (WARNING: the video contains some pretty graphic content).
