Where Do We Go Now?

February 8, 2019 By Brian Petro

Columbus Alive this week featured an article detailing the sexual assault of one of our local craft beer mavens. The community rallied around her, supporting a woman that showed incredible courage confronting a known and prevalent issue in the alcohol and hospitality community. Over the last year and a half, what was once an issue that was only shared privately has become a public topic of conversation. Behaviors that were dismissed as “boys being boys,” or that were simply ignored, now are being addressed and dealt with. And it has been a long time coming.

The problem of sexual harassment and mistreatment of women and other minorities is not new in the industry. A report that was done in 2014 shows that roughly 90% of women that work in restaurants have been sexually harassed, with half of them being harassed on a weekly basis. It is thought to be just as bad in the alcohol industry, but no studies have been done. This is years before the allegations against Harvey Weinstein emerged, bringing the much-needed conversation about sexual harassment into the public. After that New York Times article came out, a steady flow of articles addressing the issue in the industry emerged.

Many of the women that work in the industry have, over the years, just accepted the harassment as part of the environment. The unwanted comments, touches, and innuendos were something that was endured to be part of the industry. Until the cocktail boom hit in the 2000’s, bartending and hospitality were seen as a transient job choice. Something that you did while waiting for a “real job.” The growth of specialty cocktails, craft beer booming into over 7,000 breweries, and distilleries sprouting up all over the country have turned what was once something temporary into a career choice. It is easier to ignore the sleaziness you have to go through to do your job when you can tell yourself it is a temporary condition. What happens when it becomes the place where you want to plant your flag?

You have to start cleaning it up. There are few mechanisms in the industry to address sexual harassment. Some have popped up, like the efforts made by Collective Actions for Safe Spaces to build Safe Bars training about sexual harassment, but they are difficult to find. Only five states require training for harassment in the workplace. It is a monumental task to address, especially in an industry where males hold most of the positions of power and confronting them could impact your career. An unbalanced power dynamic is not unique to this industry, but it is in the early stages of being addressed. Small steps are being made as women rise up and show they are not going to accept a workplace where they are under the constant threat of sexual assault. Or when that threat becomes a reality.

It is too easy to write off, as many have, that this is a result of the free flow of alcohol through every corner of the business. As reported in a story by SevenFifty Daily, San Franciso lawyer Richard Curiale commented that “60 percent of the complaints I get wouldn’t have happened if there hadn’t been drinking.” This is a convenient excuse, but not an acceptable one. Cleaning up the industry also requires cleaning up the constant party atmosphere that surrounds it. Many bartenders and hospitality professionals have been focusing on taking what has been a generally toxic environment for workers and turning it into a healthier, safer one. This focus on a more positive environment is starting to include how women and minorities are treated in the business.

Where do we go from here? The hospitality that establishments provide to customers that walk through the door has to extend to the people that work there. Creating that safe environment for all of the people they interact with, from sales representatives to bartenders, is critical to building an inclusive, diverse industry. The generally permissive, male-dominated culture that has existed in hospitality for decades needs to change. It is going to be a slow change, requiring the efforts of everyone in it to make that shift. Women are going to have to be bold and stand up for what is right, and men are going to have to support those women in any way they can. It is going to take a long time and incredible effort. But if the support that has happened in Dayton can happen more often in other cities, the future for women in the industry looks brighter and safer.

Eudora Open New Tap Room This Friday

January 9, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

It was one of the worst kept secrets in the beer business, when news of Eudora Brewing Company‘s expansion started leaking out last year.  Owner Neil Chabot opened the original brewery in November of 2013 in a strip center on Wilmington Pike in Kettering. Their 3 barrel brewing system just couldn’t keep up with the demand and the tap room was often at capacity.  They officially announced the new location last summer and the move wouldn’t be far, just a couple miles north on Wilmington Pike.  The new location, just south of Dorothy Lane is an old Pep Boys auto shop and is 20,000 square feet,  about six times the size of the original space, which shut down in October so they could start the move.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the new facility, which will open to the public this Friday at 4pm. My first impression- WOW!  The spot is huge, wide open and really inviting!  They’ve kept enough of the original breweries decor and feel to make it feel familiar, but now it’s ready for big crowds!

Coming with them from the old spot were the Brew Your Own kettles, Eudora is the only place in the Miami Valley where customers can book time to brew their own beer.   Whether you’ve brewed before or you have no idea what you’re doing, their staff will guide you through every step of the process and make it as easy and as fun as possible. It’s a great team building experience, can serve as a fun idea for a bachelor party and the best part can be creating your own beer label. Al

Reservations for this brewing experience is on hold, as they have some equipment repairs to make, but they’ll begin taking reservations soon.

GAMING AREA

The pinball machine and video gaming systems also made the move and the have their own expanded dedicated area in the new venue.  Adding to the fun is the vintage bowling game and an expanded selection of board games and tables to spread out and play.

New additions to the tap room include two pool tables, which will offer free play, a large lounge area in front of the fireplace with leather couches, a huge patio with seating for over 100 and areas for cornhole as well as a fire pit.

charity: water

Also continuing, Eudora Brewing Co. will donate a portion of EVERY sale toward funding a water project for those in need of clean water.  They donate to a charity called “charity: water” whose mission is to end the water crisis happening all over the world. They’re a non-profit organization that donates 100% (yes, 100%) of the money contributed to help people in need of clean water. With each purchase you make at Eudora, you’re helping charity: water build wells and water purification systems in villages, schools and clinics in areas where water is difficult to obtain.

The custom built bar made locally by Jett’s Creek Woodworking is huge and gives plenty of spots to belly up to the 18 taps  and a nitro cold brew coffee system as well.

The new brewing system has increased to a 10 barrel brewing  system, and with the addition of brewmaster Jeff Fortney to the crew, Eudora has been brewing to get ready for the onslaught of beer lovers that have been awaiting a pint of Mother-Fuggle, Bangarang, The Bees-Kees or Thunberball.

Private Party Room

Speaking of Thunderball, that’s the name of the private room, available for booking for private functions.  Seating about 30, it’s decked out with table seating, a tv, whiteboards with a great view of the brewing area. Rates will run about $25-$50/hour, based of

Eudora Kitchen

But the biggest addition to Eudora is the new kitchen!  Owner Chabot knows a lot about brewing beer, but admits he knows nothing about running a kitchen, so he contracted with consultant Jonathan Kouse of Chef Therapy Group to help design the kitchen, hire Dylan and James for the kitchen crew and create the menu offerings.

Here’s the opening menu, but remember this is  new and menu items and prices will probably change as they work through the opening weeks of the  new eatery.

Dayton At Work and Play: Brett Smith

December 28, 2018 By Bill Franz

I met Brett Smith when I stopped by Branch & Bone Artisan Ales (905 Wayne). Brett is the founder and head brewer. I had never visited Branch and Bone before, but a lot of other people have already found this brewer that opened in June. I arrived just fifteen minutes after they opened one day and the place was already packed.

I visited to try a new beer called Pretzel Queen, which was made in partnership with Smales Pretzel Bakery. “I wanted to make a Kvass style beer,” Brett told me. “Traditionally, in Central Europe, that type of beer is made with rye bread. We made this one with rye malt and the famous Smales pretzel.”

Behind Brett you can see 12 taps. Each holds a different beer brewed at Branch and Bone. The offerings change regularly, Brett told me, as he tries new beers. My favorite beer name the day I visited was “Last Week’s Was Better.”

Food Service Coming to The Barrel House

November 29, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

A new option for food is coming to The Barrel House downtown Dayton! Katie Marks, best known for the The Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton, is debuting  a new food truck operation called Griller B’s, that will be located in the parking lot of The Barrel House.  The name is  a small nod to the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan,  which is a favorite of The Barrel House owners, Gus & Sara Stathes.

Starting out, Griller B’s will be open Thursday from 5pm-9pm, then Friday and Saturday 5pm-11pm. This way, during peak hours people can still experience great beer on draft without having to leave the premises for food, and also enjoy a great food truck menu without waiting in the cold. The menu will consist of burgers, quesadillas, nachos, different mac and cheeses etc. along with vegan faire. Every fourth Thursday of the month there will also be a gourmet grilled cheese menu to pair with The Barrel House’s wine tasting.  They expect to  begin service on December 7th. Luminaries of Dayton: Jacob Stickle

October 28, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer Leave a Comment

Jacob Stickle was born in Neckar-Thailfingen, Wurettemberg, Germany on February 26, 1825, son of John Jacob and Katerina Stickle.

Jacob helped his father on the family farm until he was old enough to be apprenticed to a butcher. He learned the trade of butchering and stayed in the business until he immigrated to the United States, landing in New Orleans on May 1, 1849. He arrived in Dayton on the first of June.

On his arrival Jacob started working for Adam Happle, a meat packer whose business was located on Valley Pike in Mad River Township. He worked for $7 a week and board. After two years Jacob had saved enough money to rent a butcher’s stand and later opened a stall in Harshmanville, on Yellow Springs Pike, which he attended for seventeen years.

In 1868, Jacob purchased the brewery of Sander and Stoppelman on Warren Street. When he started the business he decided to use only the best quality products, and to make his beer out of only barley, malt and hops.

In 1881, the City Brewery building burnt down. Jacob Stickle rebuilt and enlarged it at an expense of eight thousand dollars, building a three and a half story brick factory. The ice houses had a storage capacity of 2,000 tons and the beer cellars of 3,000 barrels. The first year the business made 4,000 barrels of beer and by 1882 the brewery was producing 7,000 barrels annually. The business required ten men and several teams for delivering the beer to local businesses.

Jacob married Barbara Drechsel on August 31, 1851 and they had two children. Jacob’s son, William, later helped his father run the brewery. In 1890, the business moved to 653 and 655 Warren Street. Jacob Stickle merged his brewery with The Dayton Breweries Company in 1904 and then sold out his part.

Jacob died on November 20, 1908 and is buried in Section 63 Lot 1126.

Luminaries of Dayton: Frederick and Otto Euchenhofer

October 7, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer 1 Comment

Frederick H. Euchenhofer was born in Switzerland about 1812 and came to American when twenty years old. For a few years he lived in one of the eastern states and then moved to Miamisburg in 1836. Frederick opened a bakery and confectionery store there, running a successful business until 1848, when he came to Dayton. He purchased the old Columbus House and ran it as a hotel until 1863.

In 1861, Frederick opened the Third Street Lager Beer Brewery on 1513 East Third Street. The brewery was made of brick, two stories high and had a cellar. In addition, there were three individual cellars, separate from the main building that were capable of storing 1,200 barrels. The brewery was bought by Miller and Ritzler in 1867, but Euchenhofer rebought the brewery five years later.

Frederick later changed the name of the brewery to Third Street Brewery about 1887. In 1888, over 3,500 barrels were being produced each year, most of them being consumed in the home. The annual trade for that year was in excess of $25,000.

Frederick was a charter member of, and a director in, the Teutonia Insurance Company of Dayton, which was one of the most successful financial institutions in the city. Fraternally, Frederick was an Odd Fellow and a member of the Harugari. The German Order of Harugari, sometimes called the Ancient Order of Harugari or by its German name, Der Deutsche Orden der Harugari, was a mutual benefit and cultural association of German Americans founded in New York City in 1847 that was at one time the largest German secret society in the United States. The objectives were mutual protection in a time of high German immigration and anti-German sentiment in the U.S., and preservation of German language and culture. The order forbade discussion of religion, politics, or social issues. The name Harugari comes from the old German word Haruc. It may be roughly translated as “The Teutonic spirit (or priest) of the oak tree.”

Frederick was a Lutheran and in politics a Republican. He was married twice. His only child from the first marriage, Albert, died in February, 1892. His second marriage was to Caroline Disher. They were married in Dayton and had ten children.

Frederick H. Euchenhofer died on February 3, 1891. Caroline died on November 22, 1938. They are located in Section 103 Lot 1619.

Otto Frederick Euchenhofer was born about 1857 in Dayton, Ohio. He belonged to the St. Luke’s German Lutheran Church. He was the father of four children.

Otto Euchenhofer took over the Third Street Brewery on 1513 East Third Street in 1892 and changed the name to Third Street Ale Brewery. Unfortunately, records show that the brewery slipped in business under Otto’s management. By 1895, the brewery’s yield was only 1,000 barrels, down from 4,000 in 1890. He sold the business to Henry B. Pruden and Peter J. Altherr in 1896.

Otto Frederick Euchenhofer died on May 20, 1912. He is located in Section 103 Lot 1619.

August 20, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Promising no tricks and even more treats than last year, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association presents the second annual Ale-O-Ween festival at the Dayton Steam Plant on Saturday, October 20 from 6-9 p.m.

Building on the success of 2017’s inaugural Halloween-themed craft beer festival, forty Ohio craft breweries will be pouring samples of seasonal styles and popular favorites. Ale-O-Ween will also take advantage of the Steam Plant’s outdoor space this year, allowing for more attendees and 40 Ohio craft breweries.

There will be  live music by TEAM VOID and The AmpFibians, a costume contest, food trucks (Drunken Waffle, Twisted Taco, PA’s Pork, The Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton), a tarot card reader and the most amazing face painter you’ve ever seen! Ohio On Tap users in attendance will receive five bonus passport stamps redeemable for prizes.

Regular and early admission ticket holders will receive tickets for 20 four ounce sample pours and a commemorative tasting glass. Designated driver tickets are also available.

Early bird discount tickets are on sale for one day only, Monday, August 20, with general admission tickets available for $30 each and 5 pm early admission tickets available for $40 each.

Starting Tuesday, August 21, general admission tickets can be purchased in advance for $40 and early admission tickets for $50. All regular admission and early admission ticket holders will receive a souvenir glass and tasting tickets for 20 four-ounce samples.
