Moeller Brew Barn Releases HAY-Z Pale Ale

December 7, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Moeller Brew Barn’s new First Edition HAY-Z Pale Ale is set to release in both Brew Barn Taprooms (Troy and Maria Stein)  on Thursday, December 10. The fruity, floral and refreshing pale ale has loads of centennial, amarillo, galena and mosaic hops, along with an optimistic story in hopes of ending 2020 on a positive note. “With over 50 beers hitting the faucets, 2020 has been an experimental year. More than a dozen were the hoppy kind, my favorite. We’ve taken what we’ve learned, added a twist and are proud to announce our HAY-Z Pale Ale,” said Nick Moeller, Founder of Moeller Brew Barn.

The inspiration behind this ale’s fruity, floral flavor and visual style is The Old Farmer’s Almanac, an annual entertaining piece, plump full of predictions. As much of midwest Ohio is known for its prolific farming communities, locals can resonate with the nod to the publication. The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been published since 1792 during George Washington’s first term as president.

“Both Brew Barn locations are displayed on the can label, along with the agricultural landscape seen in the Maria Stein and Troy areas. The lively illustration includes Troy’s historic WACO biplane in the vivid orange sky, while rows of crops and silos cover the fields,” stated Jess Nielsen, Brand Manager of Moeller Brew Barn. “We all know that 2020 has been every bit unexpected,” said Moeller. “Our goal with this HAY-Z Pale Ale is to acknowledge that uncertainty while anticipating a better tomorrow. It’s bright and refreshing – what most of us are looking for in the new year.”

HAY-Z Pale Ale kegs and cans are set to hit distributors on December 14. The HAY-Z Pale Ale is just one of many late 2020 releases at Moeller Brew Barn. Every week through December, additional seltzer and beer releases will be announced to celebrate the season. To learn more, visit Moeller Brew Barn’s online untappd menu or www.moellerbrewbarn.com.

Wheat Penny’s Patio- Warm and Safe!

December 2, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s 36 degrees out currently and I’m having lunch on the patio (Tarte Flambe Pizza)  at Wheat Penny.  And with just 4 of the 6 heaters turned on, it’s toasty warm on the partially enclosed patio.  I came down to talk with Chef/Owner Liz Valenti about her decision to close the dining room, but still serve meals on the patio and do carry out.

As Liz talks, it’s easy to tell that she’s done a lot of research and is passionate about making the best decision for her guests and staff.  She consulted with an engineer about how to achieve maximum air flow on the patio and invested about $20,000 installing a Haiku UV-C Ceiling Fan and heaters.  The fan evenly circulates air through their system, which includes UV-C light rays that destroy and neutralize 99.99% of airborne pathogens. It removes mold, bacteria, and viruses – including the COVID-19 virus.

Wheat Penny will be adding additional wall mounted heating in the next couple of weeks.  Liz feels confident that her patio is safe and will be a viable option throughout the winter. Their tables are still socially distanced and of course staff are masked up.  “Because of the fresh air circulation, our patio is actually safer than than our dining room at this point.  We hope as things move forward to install a Haiku in the dining room.”

Back in March when the shutdown happened Wheat Penny and it’s sister restaurant Meadowlark had to lay off staff. They helped them file for unemployment and figure out what to do about their insurance and feed them weekly and stayed actively involved with lives of those we’ve laid off.

Today Liz choked up as she  shared she had to lay off a couple more.  But they have plans to drop Door Dash and Uber Eats to launch their own in house delivery, which could bring back 3 employees. Initially delivery will be in a 3 mile range of each restaurant and then expanding as they master it.

Chef Liz shared that “the carryout menu will be expanding, we’ll be developing more family pack meals, utilizing our smoker more, smoking brisket. Our pizza’s, plated dinners and pasta’s have been our best sellers and I’m amazed at how many people are ordering our egg plant fries for take out.  I’m actually driving up to Chicago Sunday to pick up rice flour to make more, as our local purveyors have been unable to source it. To-go cocktails have also been a meaningful addition to carry outs, saying it’s not unusual for an order to be a pizza and 3 cocktails, which helps us keep bartenders on staff. We’ve also been doing some large take outs for companies that are gifting individually packaged meals with their employees and then eating together via zoom.

As we continue to chat, she shares that Covid has been the ultimate team building experience and truly improved the communication of the staff at both locations, because they’ve needed to be frank about what’s happening and they are speaking without filters.  She’s also really encouraged by the conversations being had with local and state lawmakers, and the guidance and advocacy being done on behalf of restaurants by the Ohio Restaurant Association.  As a matter of she has to end our conversation to take a call from Senator Sherrod Brown.

She left me with a final statement saying “our restaurants are making decisions based on health experts and aggressively adhering to the rules, while trying to keep as many people employed and feed. We hope our community will continue to support us and all the local eateries.”

Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction Online

December 2, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) has some unique gift ideas for the craft beer enthusiast on your holiday shopping list. The inaugural Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction features dozens of beer-centric experience packages donated by Ohio breweries and other supporters of the state’s brewing industry. Available experiences include canoe and bike trips with brewers, private brewery tours, opportunities to create and brew new beers, and much more.

The Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction will be held online from Dec. 3-12, 2020. Many of the donated experiences are designed for individuals or small groups in order to comply with protocols designed to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Several have an outdoor component or can be redeemed at a future date when public health conditions are favorable. Proceeds from the sale of each package benefit OCBA, the non-profit organization formed to promote, protect, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft breweries.

In normal times, OCBA relies on income from popular beer tasting events like Winter Warmer Fest in Cleveland and Six One Pour in Columbus. OCBA uses those funds to advocate for craft beer-friendly legislation at the Ohio statehouse, provide educational resources to member breweries, offer valuable marketing reach through programs like the Ohio On Tap app, and to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among Ohio’s breweries so they can continue to make world class, award-winning beer.

With state and local restrictions on large gatherings still in place to slow the spread of coronavirus, OCBA has been forced to cancel several fundraising events in 2020 and 2021. To generate revenue crucial to furthering the organization’s mission, OCBA has launched several new campaigns this year. Ohio Brew Haul was rolled out in May to encourage craft beer fans to order beer for carry out and delivery from their local breweries. Ohio Pint Day followed in October with more than 110 breweries offering a collectible pint glass with art by Adam Hernandez. OCBA is also offering limited edition sweatshirts in connection with next year’s planned Winter Warmer Cask Day, to be held in place of a large public tasting event.

“Craft beer has always been about more than just the liquid in the glass,” said OCBA executive director Mary MacDonald. “Our members have graciously donated their time and effort to create these unique experiences to connect with craft beer fans. We greatly appreciate the support of our breweries and Ohio beer enthusiasts as we continue to navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic.”

Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote, preserve, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry. We aspire to be recognized as the industry leader at both state and national levels for preserving the art of making high-quality, unique craft beer; to serve as the unified voice for craft brewers across the state; to advocate on behalf of the Ohio craft beer industry; to contribute to systemic, local community development by driving economic and job growth, while creating experiences that bring people together; and to serve as a beacon for local production and manufacturing through craft beer, resulting in diverse choices for consumers.

St. Anne the Tart’s Socially-Distanced Holiday Cookie Swap

November 29, 2020 By Guest Contributor

For centuries the comforting ritual of cookie baking and exchanging has been one of the sweetest ties that bind neighbors, friends, and community members together during the holiday season. It’s the one time of the year when dozens of billowy sugar cookies laden with thick swoops of icing, gingerbread dusted with powdery sugar, and crispy biscotti for coffee-dipping are baked simply with a desire to share and to send a bit of our family roots into the home of another to let them know that they are loved.

Share Some Recipes.  Or Just Eat the Cookies.

This year we’re not going to let COVID have the last laugh on this 400+ year tradition. Let the holiday merrymaking continue!

In a year of pandemic proportions, we will host our cookie swap in the safest way possible. Here’s how St. Anne the Tart sees this unfolding:

Theme: We’re theming this year’s cookie swap around the idea of family stories. In a year when we have never felt more disconnected from one another, our cookie swap will give you the chance to connect through the sharing of memories, allowing you to know one another in a deeper, more meaningful way. We welcome recipe submissions that are inclusive of all holiday celebrations – from Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, St. Lucia Day and more.

Submissions: We will be accepting submissions for cookies that have a story attached to them. Maybe it was your grandfather’s recipe he brought from his childhood and baked for his grandkids each year. It could be the memory of the cookie you had while sitting on the lap of Santa for the first time and have replicated ever since. It could be the cookies you remember most fondly baking with your kids when they were small. We want to know not just the recipe, but the story. The feelings and the sentiments about the smells, tastes, and experiences of baking them. While we can ultimately only choose 12 cookie recipes for this year’s box, we will work hard to provide the recipes and stories of all submissions to our St. Anne the Tart Cookie Box customers.

Recipe entries accepted: Nov 25-Dec 2

Recipe winners notified: Dec. 4

Box orders: Order Box.  Now through Dec 11 (or until Sold Out)

Box Pickup: Dec 18

**delivery options available within the US. Please email to request assistance with cookie box delivery at [email protected]

Each submission should have a typed recipe and a written out story behind the recipe. If you have any holiday family photos that would fit well with the story, feel free to send that as well!

Decision: There are no specific criteria for a cookie to be chosen or not, and there is no prize for having your recipe included in this year’s cookie swap box. This is not a lose/win but rather a (tough!) decision our team will make based on a multitude of variables (fragility, complexity, ingredients, shelf-life, processes, to name a few).

After submission, you will be notified by December 4th if your recipe will be making an appearance in this year’s box!

Pre-ordering a box: From our recipe submitters to our cookie eaters, anyone is welcome to pre-order a cookie swap box! Pre-orders for our cookie swap boxes will be available on our online store starting today up until December 11th. Once your box has been pre-ordered, you can either schedule to pick-up or have your cookie swap box delivered (within the US). Boxes will be available for pick-up on the hill on December 18th.

What you will receive: Each festive box will include 12 unique, distinct cookies safely baked in our commercial kitchen space and carefully packaged. Each cookie will come with a story and recipe card so that you can both make the cookies at home throughout each holiday season and learn a bit more about why that recipe is so treasured by someone else.

Miguel’s Tacos Open Friday!

November 25, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Miguel’s Taco Truck has been in a familiar fixture around Yellow Springs for the last few years.  It debuted at the 2016 Street Fair and is often parked by the Yellow Springs Brewery or in Kings Yards. When you see that truck you can count on getting some freshly made taco’s or nacho’s. Miguel Espinosa prides himself  on using nothing from a can and hand making his sauces daily. A  few weeks ago Espinosa, announced on his facebook page that the truck was being put to rest so final preparations could be made to open the bricks and mortar version.

The new location for Miguel’s Tacos is at 101 Corry St in Yellow Springs.  Miguel says that the eatery will be open this Friday, November 27th and daily thereafter from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm.

Miguel, who was born in Mexico and moved to New York at 15. His father was a chef in a Mexican restaurant and Miguel started cooking as well.  He worked in a pizza place and when he felt he’s learned all he could there he moved on to a French restaurant and then an Asian restaurant.  Along the way he also bartended as some fancy places in NYC. After New York he found his way to a sushi restaurant in Tampa, Florida.  Several businesses later Espinosa, his wife and their 3 children moved to his wife’s hometown of Yellow Springs, when Dawn was hired as a development director for Yellow Spring schools.

It was after that that Miguel felt the need to cook for others again, and hence the food truck. Meals you can look forward to at the restaurant are pictured below:

Quesadillas with warm flour tortilla, your choice of meat, Chihuahua cheese, shaved lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guac on the side!

Restaurants Going Into Hibernation

November 23, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Ok As the temperature drops, a new trend is emerging in the Miami Valley’s struggling restaurant scene: shutting down completely for the coming winter and reopening in the spring, when a vaccine may be out.

Several restaurants around the city have closed their dining rooms- just offering carry out, others have closed their  doors to hunker down through the coldest months of the year until there is a better handle on Covid 19 infections. For many, they say it is their best chance of reopening in 2021.

Basil’s On Market – Dayton, OH

The Downtown location is now closed. We look forward to serving you delicious dishes at our Dayton location in Spring 2021! Please continue to order your Basil’s favorites from our Beavercreek location for Pick Up or  Delivery.

Culp’s Cafe

Dayton History officials announced that Culp’s Café on the grounds of Carillon Historical Park in Dayton also will close until spring.

Meadowlark Restaurant

will be closed until Tuesday, December 1st. When we re-open, we will be doing carryout ONLY during our regular hours for lunch and dinner, and will keep the dining room closed at least until the Montgomery County Stay-At-Home Advisory ends. That date at this point is December 17. Please stay tuned for further information.

St. Anne the Tart

On the heels of the stay-home advisory and real-time updates from doctors that multiple floors of our hospitals are now filled with COVID patients, we’ve decided to close our brick-and-mortar (dine-in and carry-out) starting now through the rest of 2020. Our hope and expectation is to reevaluate the climate and circumstances as facts change and to reopen dine-in once again in January 2021.

But, please know, we are 𝗡𝗢𝗧 closing St. Anne the Tart.  We’ll sell lots of take-and-bake and holiday swag for gift giving (Shopify link is above ☝️ and will be added to often! ). We’ll rent out the greenhouse for date nights and then deep clean like crazy for the next one. We’ll be taking custom orders as always! We will be opening for pre-scheduled shopping trips to our The Tart at Home pop-up shop. We will still make birthday cakes and celebratory desserts. And we may even have a few surprises up our sleeves…

Wheat Penny Oven and Bar

We have made the tough decision to close the in door dining room for the time being, until further notice. We will continue to have the HEATED PATIO dining area open along with our pop up patio for seating (as weather permits on the pop up patio)
We will also continue to offer carry out with curbside pickup as well as delivery. Please stay safe. And thank you, thank you, thank you for continuing to support us through carry out if our patio seating is full. Your support sustains us and warms our hearts 💕!

Grab & Go Keto Meals and More

November 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Scratch Food has been undergoing a massive overhaul to prepare for the launch of PangeaKeto Dayton– a grab and go KETO retail store and bakery, located behind The Paragon Supper Club in Washington Township. Opening day is Tues, Nov 17th!

On the day I was there, Chef Marshall Bartley was making fresh-baked Pumpkin Donuts- that have just 1 NET CARB! This is just one of the proprietary items they will offer. Their  autumn line included, fresh-baked chocolate donuts, donut holes, and Cupcakes with Pumpkin Spiced Cream Cheese Frosting. Chef said the best thing he’s created is their KETO waffle. Owner Matt Hayden pipes in and says it’s their KETO chocolate.

For those not familiar with the ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand all the science involved, there will be plenty of folks at the store that can explain it to you.

PangeaKeto has been developing and producing some of the best sugar-free, low/no carb meals, snacks, baked goods, and sweets available on the market! You can pick up breads, sauces, snacks and so much more.  They even make their very own pork rinds, fulfilling that craving for crunch that so many on keto diets crave. Try their soups, the cheesy cauliflower, broccoli cheddar crab caught my interest.

Choose from 15 Keto  pre-made meals that include:

Smoked chicken gouda
Meatball w/ zoodles & tomato alfredo
Italian Sausage Risotto
Bbq bacon cheddar chicken
Pasta-free lasagna
Chicken codon bleu
Sausage zucchini bake
Seasoned chicken wings
Southwestern Pork
Cheesey chicken & broccoli
Mu Shu Pork
Coconut braised chicken thighs
Enchilada beef bowl
Mushroom Swiss Burger

They also have about 20 other meals for other dietary needs.

Meals are $10.99, come frozen and can be cooked in the microwave in minutes. You can also order these meals online.

PangeaKeto even has makes its very own chocolate bars, plain and with crunch.

Visit this Saturday and you’ll be able to sample their 9″ pizza’s, made right in the shop to order. Choose from a red sauce, alfredo or walnut pesto and add you favorite toppings.  While it’s cooking you can stock up on groceries for the week.

New Asian Restaurant Opens Near Dayton Mall

November 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It may have been a long time coming- as there have been coming soon signs in the windows of this former Qdoba spot since last winter.  But then again no one predicted  we’d have a pandemic either. Finally opening it’s doors just last week, Fu Mon Lau is now serving lunch and dinner seven days a week in a very modern feeling dining room on St Rt. 725 in  South Town Centre,  just east of the Dayton Mall.  They specialize in Cantonese style Chinese cuisine with a wide selection of seafood.

The name Fu Mon Lau in Chinese means a house full of happiness and my lunch today sure made me happy.  The lunch special of szechuan beef came with a choice of white, brown or fried rice and soup (egg drop, wonton or hot and sour) for just $8.95.  Lunch specials are available from 11am – 3:30pm.

The full menu is available to order from online.
