Bryan Suddith’s Favorite Downtown Lunch Spots

December 28, 2019 By Bryan Suddith

After 10 years working in the Suburbs 2019 brought a new job downtown in the Fireblocks district. I was excited to be downtown for work again, after a decade of being gone, the race was on to find a new set of regular lunch spots. Downtown is on fire and I wasted little time getting acquainted.More than dining, I was pleased to find my bank branch in walking distance, a barber just blocks away and new spots to eat alongside some longtime favorites.

Here’s my regular lunch list. Regular meaning, at least once a month and a few a little more often.

Benjamin Burger Master

1000 N. Main Street

937-223-8702

Known for burgers, but I go for the home cooking. Beans, greens, cornbread, slow cooked ribs and the best fried chicken on North Main. Bring cash. I’ve been coming here for almost 15 years and now its a short drive, I get there more often. I still have yet to get a burger. It’s home-cooked food and cafeteria style gets you in an out pretty quick.

Olive Mediterranean

44 W. Third Street

937-221-8399

This place is located just west of the Arcade on 3rd. Gyros and Kabobs, as well as great hummus plates and salads. It is hard to find better service or friendlier faces behind the counter. For less than $10 you can get a serving of Baba Ghanouj, veggies, pita and a salad for a great vegetarian lunch.

Carmen’s Deli
Corner of Jefferson & 2nd  Inside of the Stratocache Tower

(937) 610-9999

Nicest place to have lunch downtown. Unparalleled service. The only place with service that goes above Olive. I’ve yet to order anything that disappointed. Two or three times a month I find my way to Carmen’s for the Reuben or Falafel Gyro. The Falafel is bright green, full of flavor and crumbled atop lettuce, tomatoes, olives, tzatziki and feta. This is another Veggie only meal that never disappoints. Stop by Carmen’s located in the Kettering Tower.

Garcia Mobil Taco Truck

1914 E. 3rd Street

(937) 554-8196

This place. I probably visit 3 times a month or more. Call ahead, have cash ready. $2 street tacos are my go to, but my office mates have ordered the Quesadilla (its a monster full of chicken, cheese and veggies) as well as the burritos. Street tacos are soft corn tortillas, meat, onions, and cilantro. I usually get three for lunch and like the steak as well as chorizo and chicken mixed in one taco. It’s a killer combo. A touch of hot sauce and a touch of the green salsa and you’ve got taco bliss. The wait can get long if you don’t call ahead. The truck can be found on East 3rd and Huffman.

Canal Street Arcade Deli
308 E. First Street
937–220–9333

If there is a better club sandwich in Dayton, I’ve yet to find it. Boars Head meats and cheese on Rahn’s bread is the answer to most lunch hour problems. Take a few office mates, split a pitcher of beer, they have 12 taps featuring local craft beers, and make it a long lunch.  The Reuben and Monster are also in my lunch rotation.

Pita Pit
1047 Brown St
(937) 723-6884

Not downtown, it’s on Brown Street but…the new free Flyer Express runs down Main Street to Brown like clockwork. Buses come by every ten minutes making a quick ride to Brown Street easy for downtown folks to expand their lunch option. Our affinity for Pita Pit has meant that we’ve ordered Pita Platters for office lunchs more than a few times this year. I like the traditional pita but the Thai Chicken and Buffalo Chicken Pitas are worth your attention.

Not Often Enough
Lock 27 at the Dragon’s Stadium never disappoints for long lunches. Its a longer walk but the wings, soups and salads make it worth it. The beer does too. This place is easy to get in and out of for lunch and there’s always room.If you work downtown, where are you getting lunch?

New Seafood Restaurant Now Open South of Dayton Mall

December 24, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Blue Crab Juicy Seafood opened today on Kingsridge Drive, just behind the Dayton Mall.   I was the second table seated in the eatery by the manager Hery.
Prior to opening this location, he worked at their Indy location.  I asked him what their specialties would be and he said the seafood boils, crab legs and mussels. While the layout is the same as when Max & Erma’s was here, they’ve added quite a few nautical touches to reinforce their seafood menu.

The menu offers quite a few appetizers you’d expect, like hush puppies, fried cheese sticks, onion rings and chicken wings,  and you can also choose from raw or steamed oysters, fried calamari or fried soft shell crabs. Soups include a New England clam chowder, shrimp or crawfish etouffee and a lobster bisque. A house or caesar salad is also an option.

Fried baskets on the menu include shrimp, tilapia, catfish and chicken tenders and all come with french fries (regular, sweet potato or cajun style)  or coleslaw. A house or caesar salad is also an option.

Shrimp is offered head on or for just a couple dollars more can be served head off.  Their is also a kids menu offered.

I started my meal with the fried oysters, which were crispy, with a light batter and juicy inside, served with a tangy cocktail sauce that had just a bit of a bite.

But then I saw the table next to me get their seafood boils delivered and I knew I had to have one!  There are six combinations you can choose from and each comes with one mini cob of corn and two potatoes and your choice of butter, garlic butter, lemon pepper or the juice special, which combines all of the sauces.

I ordered boil A for $25.99 that included:

1/2 lb of black mussels,

1/2 lb shrimp (no head)

1/2 lb snow crab

They bring your bag to the table, shake it up so the sauce gets on everything and then you ca open it up and enjoy.  I thought it was a nice touch that they bring you plastic gloves so you don’t have to get your hands all dirty if you don’t want to.  A big plastic bucket is put in the center of your table for shells and rolls of paper towels are set on each table.  Wet wipes were also provided for a quick clean up at the end.

I couldn’t finish mine, so I just tied up the bag and took the rest home to enjoy later. The menu offers cheesecake for dessert, but that will have to be on another visit.  Beer, wine and cocktails are available.  There are 2 areas available for parties, one area in the back is semi-private (pictured above) the other area seats about 50 upstairs.

General Manager Hery shared, “we can do a buffet style private party with a couple of weeks notice.” He’s excited about this location and says its about twice the size of their Indy restaurant, which just opened in August of this year.  According to their website another Blue Crab Juicy Seafood will be opening soon in the  Mapplewood suburbs of St. Louis, Mo.

And yes, they will be open on Christmas day from noon – 10pm.

Hoagie’s Pizza House Quietly Turns 50

December 18, 2019 By Dayton937

Hoagie’s Pizza House – Front Door

How could Dayton have a pizza place for 50 years, and most people have not been there ?

Hoagies Pizza House on North Dixie is doing just that.  This relatively unknown pizza parlor is celebrating 50 years in business.  We knew we had a Food Adventure at hand !!

Let’s break it down with our original bullet form platform we have used since 2008.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on HOAGIES PIZZA HOUSE:

— There is one Hoagies Pizza location that is left.  It is located at 6128 North Dixie Drive.  Other  locations in

We loaded up this pizza !

Dayton on N. Main St, Airway Rd, and Brandt Pike have closed over the years.

— They do a lot of business, when patrons get “to go” orders then drive across the street from the Dixie Twin Drive In Theater.   Pizza and car drive in’s are a great combo.

— There is a small dining room inside if you go up a few steps.  Most orders look like they are placed “to go.”

— Hoagie’s Pizza Dough is made fresh each day, as is the sauce.  Family owned for 50 years, and dough is made by the same family.

We have now been to Hoagies Pizza House three times to get exclusive photos and scoop as always.  Not a drive by, we have eaten our way through each visit.

After sampling most of the menu, we have come up with “Must Eats” for every Dayton Foodie to enjoy.

Lasagna

“MUST EATS” at HOAGIES PIZZA HOUSE:

— THEIR PIZZA, ANY PIZZA , ANY TOPPINGS:
Whether it is the deluxe, or a pepperoni, this is the main attraction.  One of the best pizzas we had here was a pepperoni, anchovy, onion, green pepper and mushroom pizza.  It was epic.  May we suggest extra sauce and well done on all you pizzas?

— THE LASAGNA:
It has a meat sauce and is served with a salad.  This baked dish wan much better than we expected.  Lots of gooey cheese and sauce, it was a little like our grandma’s lasagna.   Get an order of garlic bread and go to town on this dish.  It might be worth asking for extra sauce, because there is plenty of cheese on this bad boy.  They even give you packets of Parmesan Cheese too.

The Famous Hoagie

— THE FAMOUS HOAGIE SANDWICH:
This is their most popular sub or sandwich on the menu.  Meats include Ham , Salami and Pepperoni, served with provolone cheese, onion, tomatoes, lettuce and green peppers on a toasted french sub bun.  Other toppings include hot banana peppers, green olives and mayo.

We finally got to try Hoagie’s Pizza House, 50 years in the making !   Don’t wait as long as we did to try this pizza !

Inside Hoagies Dining area

Give it a carryout shout yourself, and if you are going to the Dixie Twin Drive In .. fawghetabout it and get a pie for sure.  Pizza and a show is the way to go.

Christopher’s Chef John Prepares Two Last Themed Thursday Dinners

December 11, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef John

Themed dinners on Thursday night  have been a tradition for Chef John for years at Kettering’s Christopher’s Restaurant.  Recent health issues have plagued the Chef, and he’ll be retiring from the kitchen.  As he says, “my medical adventure continues, for another three to six months at least, and the treatment has left me too weak (and irritable) to reliably cook full time any longer.  I’m happy and excited to be able to present these holiday dinners.”

Here’s how he’s described his final two dinners:

On Thursday, December 12, we will prepare our version of the Italian ‘La Vigilia’, the Feast of the Seven Fishes. (It’s generally enjoyed Christmas Eve before Mass). Our version offers at least six fishes in the appetizer. We love the ‘ancient’ Cannelloni with Two Sauces, and we’ll fill these with shell and fin fishes. It’s a classic, beautiful dish with the colors of the season. We’ll fix a somewhat lighter entrée; the Red Trout fresh from Lake Huron pan roasted in Florentine style with creamed spinach and Hollandaise Sauce.

On Thursday, December 19,  we will offer a British dinner. We’ll have very nice New York strip loins, which will be roasted prime rib style (as I was taught forty or so years ago). Guests love the walnut Brussels sprouts, and I make the Cottage Pie as an homage to my Dad, who insisted that the Christmas Eve prime rib should be served with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy. I’m remembering that in the early years, we had a farmer who raised wonderful Oyster mushrooms in Greene County… The Trifle is a fun dessert, and we will have some of my Saigon cinnamon roasted pecans floating on the Butternut Squash soup.

Chef John shares “the restaurant is in excellent hands with David and Erika at the helm. They have been working very hard in all of the areas of Christopher’s and have exciting plans for the future. My cooking buddies at Christopher’s are excellent and are cooking at a very high level, which our guests have become accustomed to.  The past few months have offered up many amazing dishes and I look forward to them even getting better.”

He closes this month’s newsletter with this:

“I like the French farewell; Au Revoir, until we meet again. I will continue to visit the restaurant and look forward to seeing you soon.  More to come as soon as I return to a reasonable semblance of health. I love you all.”

Grandpa John’s Beer Cheese Dip

December 10, 2019 By Dayton937

Beer Cheese Dip

Hey all you foodies out there… This is the Big Ragu from the Food Adventures blog.

Today we share a recipe you can put to use this Holiday Season.

This one comes from the secret vault of Big Ragu’s family.
Dusted off and not shared since 1978, it is time for a special treat.

HISTORY OF THE RECIPE:

John J. Miller was born in Arcanum in 1912.  He served in WW2 and was a third shift foreman who retired from

“Grandpa” John J Miller

McCall’s Printing Press in 1976.  Known for his green thumb, handyman skills, and love of auctions and garage sales, he was also a foodie.  From rural foods like Darke County farm feasts, to fried fish at Elder Beerman and eve his rotisserie BBQ, he enjoyed comfort foods.  His family was used to making meals from scratch, so he had  few good recipes up his sleeve.

I know this, because he was my grandfather.

Although he passed away unexpectedly in 1978, when I was 8, I was lucky enough to share times with him playing bumper pool, playing catch, listening to Reds games and cheering on Flyers basketball.

One vivid memory I had was a cheese dip or  “spread” he would make called “Beer Cheese.”

He would mix a batch and keep it in an old washed out margarine container.  It was amazing.  We would sit next to each other on the couch and share the dip while watching TV.  I cherish those memories.

Today I share not only a small recipe with you, but I share a piece of my heart …. My grandfather loved Christmas and I hope this recipe brings joy to a “get together” you have this season.

GRANDPA JOHN’S BEER CHEESE DIP

Ingredients:
4 cups finely shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup of beer
6 Tablespoons of Tomato Paste
4 Teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder

Directions:
Let the cheddar cheese stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
In a medium bowl combine cheese, beer, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.

Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.

Cover and chill for 2 to 24 hours.

Makes about 3 cups of dip.

Serve with Club Crackers like Grandpa did or Big Ragu’s twist is serve it with Tomato and Basil flavored Wheat Thins.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your family from the Food Adventures Crew.

Enjoy and cherish each day with your loved ones.  We hope you make some wonderful memories this year.
