“We’re really going all out to highlight half of our namesake for this week,” said Brian Johnson, Event Spokesperson. “In addition to our normal menu offerings, Boar Fest will give people in our community even more boar dishes that are not available anywhere else.”
The Bison and The Boar will offer an expanded menu including boar sausage, boar ribs, and more, in addition to offering one of their most popular dishes at a special price throughout the week.
“Our neighbors have really come to love the melt-in-your-mouth boar belly cuts,” Johnson said. “During Boar Fest we’re serving boar belly for only $5 all week long. It’s one of the most affordable ways to try this unique protein, but only one of the many options. We’re excited to host you and provide all of the options for you to eat more boar!”

Fishes & Big Dishes at NEW Tokyo Grill & Hibachi

September 12, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Do you love seafood of all sorts?  How about Japanese Hibachi Dishes?  Even Sushi?

If you said yes to any of those three questions, you may be thrilled about Centerville’s newest buffet and hibachi hybrid called Tokyo Grill Sushi and Hibachi Buffet.  This restaurant has recently opened in the old Rue Dumaine location near Sams Club on 725 near Lyons Rd.

Part of the Buffet Bar

The Food Adventures Crew was impressed with the all you can eat sushi roll choices made constantly and replaced on the bar.  We also loved the service of their hibachi grill.  You pick the ingredients, they cook it and bring it to your table.  This place is a cross between Mongolian Grill and a Chinese Buffet with good sushi.  To us the best part was the Sashimi (raw sushi with no rice).

Let’s give you the scoop – you gotta try this place….

HERE’S THE SKINNY on TOKYO GRILL SUSHI and HIBACHI BUFFET:

Vanilla Pudding (left) and Tuna and Salmon Sashimi (right)

—Tokyo Grill Sushi & Hibachi Buffet is located at 1061 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Washington Twp.

— They are open seven days a week from 11am to 10pm.

— This is considered an upscale,  “high end buffet.”  Lunch is around $12.99 and Dinner is around $18.99.  Drinks are not included.

—This is one of the few times we suggest you go for dinner instead of lunch and here is why:  a) more sashimi offerings on the bar b) Shrimp and more seafood included in the raw meat section of the hibachi grill. These 2 reasons alone are worth the price difference.  You eat 2 pieces of sashimi and you have made up the difference price wise.

Nigiri section

— The restaurant seats 90 and they pack them in, sometimes tightly.   If you go on “off hours” it is not as busy.

—The owner has a couple of other locations in different states and decided to invest in a Dayton location because he was told it is a “friendly market.”

— The restaurant consists of 4 bars –
Bar 1 is desserts and raw sashimi (sushi with no rice)
Bar 2 is cooked and raw sushi rolls and nigiri (sliced sushi on top of rice).
Bar 3 is Chinese Food, Appetizers and soup
Bar 4 is the Hibachi Grill with meat and vegetable choices.

Sushi Roll Section – they have about 20 kinds of rolls

There are so many dishes here – but we are going to tell you the best of the best …

THE MUST EATS at TOKYO GRILL SUSHI and HIBACHI BUFFET:

—THE SASHIMI (Raw sushi with no rice):
The raw Salmon is amazing.
The raw Tuna is a treat, this is a rare chance to load up.  There are White Tuna, Octopus and sometimes Mackrel and Yellowtail slices in the sashimi section as well.

Typical sushi

—THE SUSHI ROLL BAR:
There are dozens rolls with crab, salmon, tuna, eel and more in them with avocado, cream cheese and other ingredients.  Some are even deep fried sushi rolls.
The Salmon and Tuna Nigiri
(slices of raw meat on top of rice) are incredible.

—THE HIBACHI BAR:
Choices of meat include salmon, scallops, steak, chicken, shrimp, calamari, imitation crab meat and tofu.
The vegetable selection is huge!  You can choose to have your ingredients stir fried and served with brown rice, white rice, thin noodles, or thick noodles (udon).

Hibachi Meats

—THE VANILLA PUDDING CUPS:
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the vanilla pudding cups on the dessert bar with a vanilla wafer on top.  A  perfect end to a night of indulgence.

If you are a hibachi or sushi fan at all, or if you love seafood, this place is worth a visit.  Heavily

Hibachi Veggies

stacked with seafood from calamari, to cooked and raw fish, there are a lot of high quality items on this buffet not usually found in an “all you can eat environment.”  In other words, if you are one of those people who spends $20 on two sushi rolls and walks out of the restaurant hungry, this could be your new favorite place.  Take advantage of the hibachi grill, soup area and all the amenities.

Tokyo Grill Sushi and Hibachi Buffet is a fun treat when your hungry for a seafood feast!  If you do not like seafood you can load up on steak and chicken at the hibachi buffet and a couple of chicken dishes at the Chinese bar.

Taste of The Oregon District Returns Sept 15th

September 9, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The Taste of the Oregon District, one of the Oregon District’s flagship events, returns on September 15, 2019. The Taste of the Oregon District will take place from 2:00  to 8:00 pm on 5th Street in the Oregon District. This is a free-to-attend event and will include samplings from 19 local, independent restaurants with 60+ different “bites” from which to choose, live music, adult beverages, street vendors, and sidewalk sales. Taste of the Oregon District is expected to attract more than 10,000 people from Dayton and the surrounding areas.

“Our goal is to create and host a fun and safe “Taste”-themed block party that will bring locals to the district and support our independent businesses,” explained Kyle Babirad, president of the Oregon District Business Association.

“The Taste of the Oregon District is one of several events planned through the end of the year intended to maintain the momentum and positive spirit of our neighborhood,” said Natalie Skilliter, treasurer of the Oregon District Business Association.

How it Works:

Admission to this family-friendly event is free. Tickets for food and beverages are offered at $1 per ticket. Tickets will buy tasting-size or “bite”-size portions from any of the 19 food vendors. Every vendor offers small “taste” portions between 3 and 7 tickets, which gives visitors a perfect way to sample from a number of different Oregon District restaurants. The tickets are also used to purchase beer and Whiteclaw from our beer trucks located at 5th & Brown and at 5th & Jackson. The shops of the Oregon District will offer sidewalk sales and a handful of outside vendors will set up booths. The Johnson Treatment, a Dayton original funk/jazz/soul band, will be spreading good vibes through music from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

White Chicken Chili Wins Archer’s Cookoff

September 8, 2019 By Dayton937 4 Comments

Misty’s winning chicken chili

It was a historic afternoon at the Centerville Archers.  The sun was shining, the judges were sweating and swigging beer in between chili samples.  Fourteen amateur chefs battled it out for $250 and a chance to have their chili on Archer’s Menu for a year.

Let us tell you the winning chili was amazing.  It was historic because for the first time a non-traditional chili won the event.

YES ! A White Chicken Chili made by Misty Hendrix blew away the judges, and took home the championship.

Some of the judges

Judges included Sallie Taylor from Living Dayton TV, Chip Cassano CEO Cassano’s Pizza, Andy Harmon NFL veteran from Philadelphia Eagles, The Big Ragu from Food Adventures blog, Joel Poelking, owner of Poelking Lanes South and more!

One at a time, fourteen contestants presented their chili – judged on appearance, texture, taste and sellability.  The judges were armed with spoons, bowls, papers and pens.  Notes were made, beers were drank, numbers were crunched.  Then the top 3 chili’s went to a final decision by the Archer’s Owners vote….

14 chilis in the competition

The winner, Misty Hendrix and her chicken chili won $250.  It was the best chicken chili that the Big Ragu has ever tried.  Her secret ingredient to the creamy, tasty chili is …. a dollop of cream cheese cooked right in.

In the next couple of weeks, the chili will be available at Archer’s Restaurants.  This is just reason #214 to go their for lunch or dinner.

FYI, The Big Ragu was one judge with input.  He ranked the chili’s 1 through 14 and his top 4 were :

Chili #6 by Jim Weaver
Chili #1 by Hansgren
Chili #10 by Misty Hendrix
Chili #2 by Clouse

Lots of people came out to try the chili

Thanks to Dan Apolito and Mike Fullenkamp for running a spectacular party and cookoff.  The staff at Archers worked their butt off to serve, clean and make the experience priceless.

THANK YOU ARCHERS !  CONGRATULATIONS MISTY HENDRIX!

Check out the winning Chicken Chili recipe, available soon at Archer’s Tavern.

Coopers Hawk Winery and Restaurant Opens Monday

August 24, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Marketing Specialist Erin Kelly explains the Tasting Bar

The reputation Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has built with it’s previous 38 locations has helped build the excitement for the debut of the Centerville Cornerstone location off of Wilmington Pike.

Opening to the public this Monday, August 26th at 11am, guests will enter the Napa-style  tasting bar.  A long open bar, backed by a wall of their 40+ wines, guest are encouraged to taste their way through the menu, with educated staff guiding them to find wines they enjoy.

They offer 3 tastings each featuring 8 wines:

  • a variety tasting featuring reds and whites $8
  • a sweet tasting $8
  • Lux tasting  – features their top tier wines $13

The tasting guides shares facts to help you learn about the wines, assist with pronunciation when needed and share pairing tips.  Erin Kenny, who serves as the marketing specialist for the chain explains that Cooper’s Hawk wants to make wine accessible to all and debunk the “snooty” reputation wine sometimes gets.

You’ll also see a variety of wine glasses, cork holders and novelty wine gifts and accessories merchandised on islands in the tasting area as well as  a case full of truffles in what they call their artisan market.

Continue on into the building and you’ll see the full serve bar, where you can sit at the bar, at a table or even a booth.  Enjoy a cocktail from their extensive list, many of which include wines in the mix

As you head into the dining room, you’ll see a wall featuring the Winemaker’s Barrel Reserve, made each year and crafted from expertly-selected barrel lots to create a rich, yet elegant Bordeaux-style wine that we age in the finest oak barrels, adding sophistication and flavor dimensions. the 2019 Reserve is already sold out by the bottle, but you can get a taste at the restaurant.

Then you enter the dining room, which seats around 300, and in nice weather there are another 50 seats on the patio that overlook a pond with a fountain.  There are also 2 private dining rooms that seat about 24 each, that can be combined for private parties of up to 60 and are equipped with AV essentials needed for presentations.  Rooms are available for reservation with a minimum spend requirement, as opposed to a room fee.  If your order doesn’t make that requirement, you can always add a case of wine or two to take home to hit the mark.

The menu at Cooper’s Hawk pairs each item with a wine, by bin number to make it easy.  Wines by the glass are very reasonably priced ranging from about $7-13.

Appetizers include Asian Ahi Tuna, Drunken Shrimp,  Hummus, Asian Pork Belly Tostadas, Potstickers, Calamari, as well as a dish referred to as Chef Matt’s Perfect Pairing Plate (pictured below) which features a Trio of Cheeses: Stracciatella, Buttermilk Bleu, Sartori Parmesan, Honeycomb, Black Fig Jam, Grilled Polenta Crostinis and some candied bacon.  There is also an optional wine pairing  that compliments this plate.

Every single item on the menu is made in their scratch kitchen, which often runs with 20 cooks on the line and the attention to detail.  Actually that’s untrue, they do bring in their gluten bread, to assure that it is made in a gluten free kitchen.  They also offer a pretty extensive gluten free menu that includes steak, seafood, chicken and burgers.

Happy Hour at Cooper’s Hawk runs from 3-6pm featuring $6 wines by the glass, and wine specialty drinks and a list of appetizers from $7-10.

They also offer a kids menu, a carryout menu and a catering menu.

The Wine Club at Cooper’s Hawk is an all-inclusive membership where you will not only receive our winemaker’s newly released wine each month, but also enjoy many great benefits including invitations to members-only events, exclusive discounts, points on purchases, birthday rewards, and aWine Club Newsletter with information on new wines, special events, and great recipes. Memberships start at $20 month and you have the option to pick up your wine or have it sent. Choose the membership type that’s right for you, variety (meaning you’ll get red and white varietals) Red, White or Sweet.  Gift memberships also available for 3, 6  or 12 months.

Thursday afternoon I was lucky enough to enjoy a media tasting, which started off with Chef Matt’s Perfect Pairing Plate and then a tasting menu that started with crispy brussels sprouts with cashews, mint and sweet thai chili, and as one who’s usually not a fan of this vegetable, thought it was one of the best dishes of the day.  We also tried the Asian pork belly tacos, shrimp and scallop risotto, pan-roasted barramundi, gnocchi carbonara(the gnocchi is one of the few ingredients not made in house), a ginger soy glazed NY Strip and for dessert the Cooper’s Hawk Chocolate Cake and Lemon Ice Wine Cheesecake.

We also had a chance to chat with Master Sommelier Emily Wine. She serves as the liaison between the company and its individual restaurants, engaging with guests and the brand’s 350,000+ Wine Club members to create unique experiences centered around wine and spirits. She spearheads initiatives designed to enrich the guest journey through education, immersive events, collaborative partnerships and curated lifestyle adventures. She also creates her own personal wine label for Cooper’s Hawk.

Emily is an internationally qualified sommelier, and one of only 149 individuals in the Americas to earn the designation of Master Sommelier. She is also one of 15 professionals who have been awarded the prestigious Remi Krug Cup for passing all three sections – theory, service and blind tasting – of the Master Sommelier Diploma Examination on her first attempt (most candidates sit for the exam two to three times, and some take it as many as six times).

Overall I walked away from this tasting impressed.  By the food, the wine and especially the service.  Which for a brand new restaurant is rare, but in talking with the management, they all credit the vision of founder Tim McEnery complete lack of pretense and  a culture that reflects his values – one that embodies respect, personal development and humility, and is designed to accelerate quality and innovation as the company grows at a pace that is both aggressive and manageable.

Bringing quality fine dining to Preble County, The Bison and The Boar is excited to introduce a number of new offerings and initiatives as they welcome long-time area chef, Don Warfe to the back of house.

“It’s been exciting to see how our friends and neighbors have responded to what we’ve introduced with The Bison and The Boar over the last half year,” said owner Dan Appenzeller. “We’re constantly looking for ways to better serve the community and offer something truly unique, which is one of the reasons that we’re so excited to welcome Don as our executive chef.”
With decades of experience as a head chef and consultant for restaurants around the greater Dayton area and as a consultant for Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares, Don Warfe brings with him a passion for utilizing local ingredients.
“One of my biggest areas of focus over the years has been utilizing local seasonal ingredients from farms close by,” Don Warfe said. “I strongly believe that as a chef, it’s my responsibility to provide food that is fresh, healthy, and delicious. Using local ingredients supports our guests and the local economy, and it’s exciting to cook with great ingredients from the neighborhood.”
