DAI Announces Exhibitions for 2019

December 6, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

As The Dayton Art Institute (The DAI) prepares to begin its centennial celebrations in 2019, the museum has announced a suite of exhibitions for the year.

The centennial year will feature three special exhibitions, several “focus exhibitions” that highlight specific artists, works or themes, and two significant Asian art loans.

The special exhibition season begins with For America: Paintings from the National Academy, on view February 23–June 2, and continues withOur Century: Dayton Area Collects, June 29–September 22, and Maker & Muse: Women and Early 20th-Century Art Jewelry, October 25, 2019–January 19, 2020.

Focus exhibitions planned for 2019 include Dorothy Height’s Hats, March 23–June 23, Monet and Impressionism, May 11–August 25, The Moon Museum, June 29–September 8, William Preston Mayfield Photographs, September 21–December 29, Mona Lisa Today and In the Company of Friends: The Legacy of Kettering and Patterson, scheduled for early 2019, and Art of Ernest Blumenschein, scheduled for late 2019.

“This will be a stellar year for exhibitions at The Dayton Art Institute, as is fitting for our centennial celebration,” The Dayton Art Institute’s Chief Curator Jerry N. Smith said. “We will host three major special exhibitions during the year and will present several diverse, smaller exhibitions. There will be plenty to see and enjoy throughout the year.”

For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design, February 23–June 2

The Dayton Art Institute will be the debut venue for this major traveling exhibition, organized by the American Federation of Arts and the National Academy of Design. Founded in 1825, the National Academy of Design (known simply as the National Academy) has long been a leading artistic voice in America as an honorary artists’ society, school, and museum. This exhibition of 100 paintings by 79 artists tells the story of the National Academy, from the early 19th century into the 21st.

It will feature masterworks by many of its prominent members along with portraits of several of the artists, since a portrait was a requirement for membership. Included are works by some of the most recognizable names in American art: Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Maxfield Parrish, William Merritt Chase, N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri, Ernest Blumenschein, Isabel Bishop, Richard Estes, Wayne Thiebaud, Peter Saul, and many more.

Our Century: Dayton Area Collects, June 29–September 22

Organized by The Dayton Art Institute, Our Century: Dayton Area Collects will bring together works from the most significant private art collections in the Dayton region, shown alongside significant gifts as part of the museum’s centennial celebrations, as well as future, or promised, gifts to The DAI. Featuring a diverse range of objects, the exhibition will look at the important role collectors play in helping to grow The DAI, through the past century and into the next.

Maker & Muse: Women and Early 20th-Century Art Jewelry, October 25, 2019–January 19, 2020

The DAI will be the exclusive Ohio venue for this traveling exhibition, organized by The Richard H. Driehaus Museum and toured by International Arts and Artists, Washington, D.C. Maker & Muse showcases the world of art jewelry at the turn of the twentieth century, featuring the Art Nouveau styles of France, Germany and Austria, and the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and America, including works from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios, New York. The exhibition will feature more than 240 extraordinary examples of jewelry, looking specifically at the important roles women played in the creation and wearing of art jewelry, as both maker and muse.

Focus Exhibitions

In addition to the slate of special exhibitions, The DAI will present a series of smaller focus exhibitions, highlighting a diverse range of art.

“Unlike our special exhibitions, which provide a deep dive into a subject, our upcoming focus exhibitions allow us to put a spotlight on a movement, an artist, a medium or idea,” Smith said. “These are smaller exhibitions with exceptional art that will touch on an array of diverse topics.”

The first of the focus exhibitions is Dorothy Height’s Hats, on view March 23–June 23. An author and icon of civil rights, Dorothy Irene Height (1912–2010) was known for her intelligence, leadership, courage … and hats! She was rarely seen in public without a hat, and this exhibition will explore the extraordinary life of Dr. Height by bringing together 42 of her favorite hats, on loan from The Dorothy I. Height Education Foundation, Washington, D.C.

Monet and Impressionism, May 11–August 25, will feature a dozen examples of Impressionist art. The exhibition, organized by The Dayton Art Institute, will provide a spotlight on Impressionism in France and Claude Monet’s remarkable influence on art. The focal point of the exhibition will be a special loan from the Denver Art Museum of Monet’s spectacular painting, Waterloo Bridge (Effect de soleil), 1903. This work demonstrates Monet’s tireless explorations of atmosphere and light. Additional loans will include works by Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Frederick Frieseke, and Henri Matisse. The exhibition will also include examples of Impressionist painting from The DAI collection, including Monet’s Waterlilies, 1903, and the rarely shown Degas pastel, After the Bath, around 1895.

The Moon Museum, June 29–September 8, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, by showcasing the strange and intriguing story of the Moon Museum. Featuring designs by six artists, including Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Rauschenberg, theMoon Museum is a tiny wafer, made in a small edition, one of which is believed to have traveled on Apollo 12 to the moon, where it remains. Featured on the PBS series History Detectives, the Moon Museum is a compelling story that crosses art and space. The exhibition will also include other works of art relating to the moon and the Apollo missions.

During the latter half of 2019, a pioneering Dayton photographer will be featured in William Preston Mayfield Photographs, September 21–December 29. Mayfield (1896–1974) was a prominent figure in the history of Dayton photography and among the first to take photos from an airplane. Drawn from a private collection, this exhibition will showcase Mayfield’s many photographic achievements in and around Dayton during his six-decade career.

Dates are still being finalized for additional focus exhibitions, including: Mona Lisa Today and In the Company of Friends: The Legacy of Kettering and Patterson, to be presented in early 2019, and Art of Ernest Blumenschein, to be presented in late 2019.

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), is a pinnacle of achievement of the Italian Renaissance and the most famous painting in the world. Although instantly recognizable today, the painting actually looks considerably different than it would have when created in 1503. Colors have faded and changed with time and details are now lost, but recent scientific studies indicate how the painting would have appeared when still fresh from Leonardo’s easel. Using the extensive data compiled by a team of experts from the Louvre, Paris, and after her own research, artist Jenness Cortez (American, born 1944) was commissioned to paint a modern-day reproduction that shows the vibrant colors and fresh details of the original. The presentation of this modern reproduction of the Mona Lisa will not only celebrate The Dayton Art Institute’s centennial, but also the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death in 1519.

In the Company of Friends: The Legacy of Kettering and Patterson celebrates 100 years of collecting Asian art at The DAI by exploring the significant contributions of Virginia W. Kettering and Jefferson Patterson to the collection. Presenting a variety of artworks on the topic of the Chinese scholar-collector, the exhibition will pose the broader question of what it means to collect.

Raised in Dayton, Ernest Blumenschein (1874–1960) was a highly successful artist and co-founder of the influential Taos art colony, in Taos, New Mexico. Joining The DAI’s painting Canyon, Red and Black (1934) will be a handful of other works by the artist, including a special loan ofEagle Wing Fan (1920s) from the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In addition, the current focus exhibition Impressive: 100 Years of Japanese Prints at The DAI, will continue throughout the centennial. It traces the development of The DAI’s extensive Japanese woodblock print collection and the donors who helped shape it. Including works from some of the most famous artists and examples of the typical genres, the exhibition will feature rotations of different prints every four months.

Two significant art loans will also be on view beginning in early 2019, further enhancing the museum’s rich Asian art galleries. The first, a stone sculpture from ancient Gandhara, is outstanding for its monumental size and sensitive carving. The second is an ancient Chinese bronze vessel distinguished by well-preserved decoration, especially of the dramatic taotie masks.

“You won’t want to miss these exhibitions, as well as the museum’s many other centennial events, including ‘100 Happenings for 100 Years’ and special community open houses,” The DAI’s Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger said. “Please make plans to join us throughout 2019. We look forward to celebrating the museum’s rich history with the Dayton community.”

A museum membership is the best way to experience everything happening during The DAI’s centennial. Starting as low as $40, a one-year membership provides free admission to all exhibitions and the museum’s collection galleries, as well as free admission to Bob Ross Auto Group Jazz & Beyond concerts, free or discounted admission for many other museum events, programs and workshops, discounts at The Museum Store and Leo Bistro, and reciprocal admission to 14 other Ohio art museums. On Saturdays during the month of December, the museum is offering a 25% discount on the purchase of new or gift memberships. The discount is available online, by phone at 937-223-4ART (4278), or in person at the museum’s Guest Services Desk, but only on Saturdays in December.

A membership purchased in December also includes free admission to the museum’s current special exhibition, Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête, which continues through January 13, 2019.

Shon Walters – “reduced to nothing”

November 8, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Stivers School for the Arts along with the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District
proudly presents, “reduced to nothing,” a Solo Exhibition and Book Release by Shon
Walters.

Shon Walters is a local Dayton, Ohio artist that has been working with various mediums
with a concentration in wood for almost thirty years. Exhibiting and selling his work
nationwide for many years, Walters is a celebrated and awarded sculptor. His latest
local commissions can be viewed at Toxic Brew Company in Dayton, Ohio’s Oregon
District as well as a largest-scaled commission at the New Lebanon Library also in
Ohio.

Focused primarily on his national clientele and private commissions, Shon’s work has
been but somewhat unseen locally. He has not shown any work publicly in Dayton for
over five years and not had a solo show for fifteen.  With an inherent feeling of the
missing connection with his local community, he was awarded with an individual grant
given by Culture Works via Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District.

Placing a year of commissions on hold to focus, the solo exhibition will be showcasing
his newest body of personal work including some pieces from a series in progress for 7
years. The artist has conceptualized an immersive reality for guests to truly be a part of
his larger-than-life works and series works along with video and sound installations
aiming to deliver a sensory experience.

Between the 2003 and 2015 Shon created 9 different drawer-box series. He has
compiled a book of images with a story and philosophy behind the work. The book,
“The birth, evolution and extinction of the drawer box,” will be released and copies will
be for sale.

Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête

October 19, 2018 By Guest Contributor

The new exhibition opening at the Dayton Art Institute, Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête,  is from contemporary African-American artist Mickalene Thomas and features several large scale photographs of influential and personal themes along with the artist curated works entitled tête-à-tête. Thomas is widely known for her complex paintings made of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel, but her photography is also an important and dramatic aspect of her work.

Mickalene’s large scale photographs of black women will evoke a diverse range of thought and emotion from viewers as they examine issues of femininity, beauty, race, sexuality, and gender in her work.  Mickalene purposefully omits long descriptions beside her work so the viewer is able to create their own narrative without prompting from the artist.  However, it is noteworthy that one of the first series of photographs in the exhibit features Mickalene’s mother Sandra Bush, a former fashion model who was a very influential in her life who eventually succumbed to kidney disease.  Their relationship was not always easy and attendees can view a film shown inside the exhibit that deals with some of these aspects of their lives.

The photographs, being personal and influential, also share a theme of 70s decor and fashion that were a part of the artist’s upbringing.  Mickalene was born in 1971 in New Jersey, so was very much a child of the 70s.  Also, showing a playful but albeit daring side, there is a portrait of Mickalene in her alter ego that she wore sometimes on campus while attending Yale which undoubtedly rose the issue of “who belongs where” among students and faculty.

The visual conversation curated by Mickalene, tête-à-tête, further explores the ideas central to her work featuring photographers and key images which have inspired her. Artists in tête-à-tête include Derrick Adams, Renée Cox, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lyle Ashton Harris, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, Malick Sidibé, Xaviera Simmons, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Artist of the Week: Douglas R. Fiely

October 5, 2018 By Bill Franz

I’ve admired Doug’s work for years, and I own one of his prints. Doug told me that he has a degree in printmaking but now does both painting and printmaking. He taught art at the high school level, and then at Defiance College, before retiring from teaching and moving to Dayton.

Doug’s paintings somehow turn seemingly simple drawings of everyday things into interesting art. “My inspiration comes from working with figures in different variations,” said Doug. “I raised chickens for many years, and they appeared in many of my paintings. I grew up near Grand Lake St. Marys so fish and water scenes are often in my work. I’m fascinated by the shapes, the contrasts and dissonance of things. I have a sort of modernistic, geometric style.”

When I visited Doug he was working on a few paintings in different stages, so I got some understanding for his overall process. He worked on one piece where the outlines of two fish were already drawn on the canvas in pencil. I watched him apply modeling paste over his sketch and then smooth it out with a piece of wood. Then he used a pencil to cut through the modeling paste in several places. “When I stain this piece” he explained “the stain will be darker along those lines.”

I also watched Doug work on two pieces that had already been stained and then painted. As he put the finishing touches on these pieces, he added dark lines that somehow made the painting seem more like a print.

To see if you like his work as much as I do, you can look at one of Doug Fiely’s engravings in the Dayton Kyoto print exchange now at Sinclair’s Triangle Gallery and you can see some of his paintings tonight at 6 PM. Mikee Michelle Huber Huber is opening her new studio at 903 N Keowee and Doug is one of the guests artists who will have work on display.

Artist of the Week: Megan Fiely

September 28, 2018 By Bill Franz

Megan Fiely moved back to her home state of Ohio a little over a year ago, after living in Colorado and Kansas. She lives in Dayton’s South Park neighborhood and shares a studio in the Old North Dayton neighborhood.

Megan was nice enough to let me hang out and watch her paint for awhile. When I started watching this canvas was almost completely white, with some texture made from modeling paste. As I watched her paint I could start to see one of her colorful abstracts emerge.

You can see Megan painting tonight, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. The Dayton Philharmonic is playing three concerts that include the Final Movement from Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Before the concert the audience will see Megan and two other artists creating their own pictures.

“I don’t mind painting while people watch,” Megan told me. “I did that as part of Art in the City in August, and also at Crane Studios Market in June. In November I will be painting alongside a dozen other artists at the Art Off fundraiser for K12 Gallery and TEJAS, In just two hours we will each create a finished painting.”

“My love of music is something that influences my art. There’s a musical element in most of my work, so painting before performances by the Dayton Philharmonic is great.”

Once A Year Art Sale

September 13, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Vicki Rulli and Tom Heaphey met in 1998 while working together in Columbus, Ohio, and started their business in 2004 primarily as a photographic studio. Their business evolved focusing on their artwork, as well as some amazing collaborations with other artists, designers, non-profits, and small creative companies.

When Vicki and Tom moved to Springfield, Ohio in 2006 they knew it was the place to headquarter their business and raise their family. According to their website, “with a diverse economy and population, as well as more museums than McDonalds, a Frank Lloyd Wright house (Westcott House), a symphony, bike trails and kayak runs, an active group of working artists, and countless other cultural and outdoor activities, Springfield fostered the type of working and living space they wanted to be a part of.”

Together they created Itinerant Studio – a production art studio creating original and limited edition mixed media works using a variety of techniques and materials that serves the design and wholesale trade.  They create everything in house, with their own wood shop, print shop and framing operation in their 100 year old 35,000 warehouse. Usually they  sells art to designers, hotels and boutiques all over the world, but once a year they open up their studio to the public to purchase artwork at up to a 90% discount on discontinued collections and studio seconds.

The auction will feature over 100 original and limited edition mixed media works in a variety of sizes, techniques and materials, including recycled aluminum, sustainably harvested birch wood, acrylic and Italian fresco.  Proceeds from the auction will benefit  the Wescott House in Springfield.

Artist of the Week: Tricia Calvert

September 4, 2018 By Bill Franz

Looking around Tricia’s studio you might think it was a space shared by several artists. There is a table top obviously used to make jewelry. There are charcoal drawings and oil paintings. There are abstracts painted on both glass and metal hung alongside portraits. But all of this art was created by one talented artist.

Tricia Calvert working in her studio at The Front Street Building Co..

As I talked with Tricia I learned that her MA is in Integrated Art Studies. I guess that means she’s been interested in a broad range of types of art for quite a while. Tricia also has a degree in creative writing, but I didn’t notice any drafts of short stories as I looked around her studio.

I asked Tricia how she sold her art and she said a lot of it is done on commission. She likes to get to know a person and then develop a unique and appropriate piece of art for that person.

When I visited, Tricia was painting a portrait of one of The Rubi Girls. Her Rubi Girls paintings will be shown at Square One Salon (506 East Third Street). The show opens Friday, September 7 from 5-8 pm.

If you go to the opening, ask Tricia how she managed to be a contestant on both Let’s Make a Deal and Price is Right.

August 7, 2018 By Guest Contributor

Rosewood Arts Centre’s premier annual event, Art on the Commons, is almost here! We’re celebrating a major milestone this time around -this fine arts and crafts festival has been going strong for 30 years! The festival features over 100 artists in a variety of media. All the artwork is juried to make sure the quality is top notch. Perusing the booths is a great way to spend a Sunday. Here are some of the many fun things to check out at the event, affectionately known around here as AOTC!

1.  All the art

Artist booth

So, 100 artists. As always, it’s a great mix of new folks and returning favorites. This year’s categories are ceramics, digital art, fiber/leather, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, works on paper and wood.

We mentioned jurying – wondering what that means? Our three jurors, Eve Fleck, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Springfield Museum of Art; Marta Hewett, the owner of Marta Hewett Gallery in Cincinnati; and Kettering Arts Council member Alex Ignatiou, reviewed all the AOTC submissions and ranked each artist based on design, originality, presentation, audience appeal and eligibility. Come see (and buy) the artwork that stood out from the crowd.

2. The setting

You might have noticed that we’re all about Kettering’s parks. And why wouldn’t we be? Lincoln Park is home to beautiful flowers, Kettering’s iconic fountains, lots of public art, and it features plenty of green spaces, shade trees and benches for resting your feet. Come enjoy the park while it’s bustling with people and full of even more great artwork.

This year, our photogenic festival will feature an Instagram scavenger hunt – those who complete the hunt will be entered into a prize drawing!

Artist Jes McMillan of The Mosaic Institute is the driving force behind the new East Dayton Arts District.

The new arts district is bounded by E. Monument Avenue, N. Findlay St., Xenia Avenue, and Wayne Avenue and Webster Street. Inside those boundaries you’ll find Color of Energy Gallery, Missing Peace Art Space, Stivers School for the Arts, High Street Gallery, Crane Studios Market, TL Brown Photography, LLC, city wide studios, Gem City Catfe, Yellow Cab Tavern, Hamilton Dixon’s studio, Dayton Society of Artists, Proto BuildBar and Marsha Pippenger’s gallery. Artist of the Week: Julie Riley

June 25, 2018 By Bill Franz

ARTIST OF THE WEEK Julie Riley in her studio at the The Front Street Building Co.. I asked Julie how long she’d been painting.

“I painted a lot in my youth” she told me “but then my life took another direction. I worked with software and with graphics arts. Then about 2 years ago I started painting again. I got this small space at Front Street and now I’m painting almost every day.”

Julie’s painting are in several different styles, but I especially like the birds she has painted. I noticed that several small bird paintings were no longer on her shelf, and I asked about them.

“Those are headed to Finches ALoft in Bellbrook. But first I am getting them photographed so I can make some prints. This parrot behind me is going to Sugarcreek Bird Farm.”

You can visit Julie’s studio on any of the First Friday or Third Sunday events (1001 East 2nd Street, Building 100, Door BC, 3rd floor). You can follow her art at Julie Riley Art.

You can order prints of many of her paintings on her website.

Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits at DAI

June 22, 2018 By Bryan Suddith

The Dayton Art Institute opens the Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits exhibit Saturday. 48 black and white portraits comprise the exhibit on loan from the Smithsonian’s American Portrait Gallery.
Yousuf Karsh is perhaps the most prolific portrait photographer of the 20th century. Coming to age following the Armenian Genocide he landed in Ottowa Canada as a refugee from the Ottoman Empire, now modern-day Turkey.
From Canada, he built his career and legacy after his 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill made the cover of Time Magazine. Yousuf’s portraits would grace the cover of Time Magazine 19 more times over his career.
Like many photographers of that period, Yousuf was involved in every aspect of the portrait session, including the development of the film and printing of the images. The images feel personal and that comes the relationships and rapport Yousuf built with each subject he photographed.
Visitors to the exhibit will be struck by the absolute clarity of each photo. These are not digitally retouched images, but photographs made 40, 50, 60 and even 70 years ago. Painstakenly lit, posed, developed and printed by hand. Most all of the images feel personal as well. His photos of Hemingway and Martin Luther King are iconic and easily recognizable, but the intimate photo of Helen Keller and her assistant give you a glimpse into her life.

This exhibit is focused on American portraits. Innovators, personalities, celebrities, and artists, but also includes the whimsical with Colonel Sanders and Andy Warhol finishing the walk of portraits. Look for Grace Kelley, Edward Murrow, Muhammad Ali, Niel Amstrong, Walt Disney and dozens of others that shaped America in the 20th century.
The exhibit opens June 23 and will return to the American Portrait Gallery in September.
Keep an eye out for the one portrait in the collection that is not of an American icon.

A number of related events and programs are planned in conjunction with the special exhibition, including a Trivia Night at The DAI hosted by Dana Sintell of The Rubi Girls! Scheduled programs include:

  • Trivia Night, July 13, 6:30–9 p.m.
  • ARTventures: Clay Portraiture, July 14, 1–3 p.m.
  • Curatorial Conversations: Exhibition Tour, July 19, 6–7 p.m.
  • ARTventures: Celebrating Celebrities, July 28, 1–3 p.m.
  • Teen/Adult Studio: Charcoal Portraiture, July 29, 1–2 p.m.
  • Talk: What’s in a Portrait? The Art of Photography and Portraiture, August 4, 1–2 p.m.
  • The Language of Art, August 8 & August 11, noon–2 p.m.
  • ARTventures: Creative Collages, August 25, 1–3 p.m.
  • Behind the Scenes Talk: Yousuf Karsh and Jane Reece, September 6, 4–5 p.m.

For more about Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits and Jane Reece Photographs, as well as related programs, visit www.daytonartinstitute.org/americanportraits.

Admission to Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits is free for museum members. Non-member admission is $14 adults; $11 seniors (60+), students (18+ w/ID), active military and groups (10 or more); $6 youth (ages 7-17); and free for children (ages 6 & under). Prices include admission to Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits and Jane Reece Photographs, as well as the museum’s collection galleries. As a special thank you to the community, admission to the exhibition will be free to all on the first four Sundays in July: July 1, 8, 15 & 22.

Meet Caitlin Cartwright – Social Change Artist

May 29, 2018 By Bill Franz

_M9A0995

I first met artist Caitlin Cartwright at Dayton’s Front Street Buildings, on a night when more than three dozen studios and galleries were open to the public.  Caitlin was the featured artist in the Color of Energy Gallery, and her vibrant painting-drawing-collages were creating quite a stir.

Caitlin explained that there was a narrative underlying each of her works, and I asked her to tell me a bit about some of them.

_M9A0808

“Home is an intimate painting I did inspired by spending evenings in my backyard last Summer,” Caitlin explained.  “The silhouetted figure behind the leaves is a symbol of myself, who was still coming to terms with domesticated life in my new home.  There are small gold crickets in this painting that represent the sweetness of this same domestication and remind me of all the hours I listened to their sounds.”

_M9A0809

“Float away is a reaction to my dad’s cancer diagnosis last year.  I use this thin gold chain in a lot of my work as a symbol of a connection that’s precious but delicate.  The birds on the silhouette of the person are also an image I use a lot.  For me they are a symbol of hope and protection.”

_M9A0845

“Monsters is a painting I made when I returned from India.  I was inspired by the strength of many of the women I worked with, able to shield themselves against many obstacles or threats they may face and still grow and thrive.  The painted face was a symbol of self protection.  In reality a layer of paint won’t be able to do much but it’s a comfort and meaningful to the wearer.”

_M9A0855

“Full Stop is about how life can be easily interrupted or change drastically without warning.  I made this painting after moving back to Ohio and the Dayton skyline is what makes up the background.”

Before I left her exhibition I arranged to visit Caitlin in the studio in her home in Dayton’s Belmont neighborhood.

We entered the small bedroom that serves as Caitlin’s studio.  I knew Caitlin had lived and worked in several countries, so before learning about her art process I asked about her travels.

“I grew up in the Dayton suburb of Centerville,” Caitlin told me.  “As my interest in art grew I went to the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati and then to MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art).  After graduation I decided I wanted to experience a culture completely different from my own, and I managed to get a job in Madagascar.”

_M9A0929

“In Madagascar I taught English for a year and in my spare time I did art projects with orphans and street kids.  When I returned to the U.S. I applied to the Peace Corps.  They sent me to Namibia in southwest Africa.  There I helped start a girl’s afterschool club.  One of our projects was gathering recycled materials to make baskets to sell.”

“When I returned to the U.S. I knew I wanted to pursue an advanced degree but I had trouble deciding on the field.  I loved the community building I had done on my overseas trips but I also loved making my art.  I felt torn between those two passions.  I eventually decided to get a master’s degree in Sustainable International Development.   Working on that degree put things into focus for me.  I realized that if I used my art to build communities everything I loved fit together.  There was no conflict.”

_M9A0926

“A project I did as I worked on my masters degree was fascinating.   I lived in Ahmedabad, India for four months documenting artisan’s stories.  I went to their homes, sat with them and their families, and then photographed, filmed and wrote their stories.  I put this information on a website that was available to anyone interested in buying their products.”

_M9A0952

“Living and working in all of these places has been great for me as a visual artist   All of the sights I’ve seen have been added to my visual vocabulary.   You can see Madagascar in the piece I am just starting here.”

“For the last two years I have been the Education and Operations Manager of the Preble County Art Association.  Now I see Preble County images are starting to work their way into my art.”

“I started this piece with a number of sketches.  I usually do a combination of drawing and collage and paint, and the elements of the piece typically change a lot as I work.   As I add and change elements I think about how each part of the piece contributes to the narrative.  I want my art to work on two levels.  I want it to be visually attractive and I want it to tell a story.”

With that, I left and let Caitlin return to working on her latest story.
