Let the Music PLAY! TheatreLab’s Popular Trivia Returns 4/2/24!!

March 25, 2024 By Y. K. Cuts

You know music? You know singers? You Know Broadway? You know lyrics? Well, if so, you know you’;re going to win Trivia Night at TheatreLab!

The popular event returns on Tuesday 4/2/24 starting at 6:00pm. It will be the usual set-up….beverages, snacks and all you need to play trivia.  What makes this trivia unique is it’s FREE and the theater company merely asks for donations as support. The last trivia event ‘Merry Quizmas‘ was packed to the gills and this one looks no different. The rules are much the same as trivia in the area….no more than 6 to a team, the quizziteer has final say, there will be some sing-along moments, and other mayhem. The trivia night has 3 rounds and will again provide winners with outstanding prizes. (Not sure what they have this time around, but last time there were gift certificates for spa services at Square One Salon, a basket of bottles, complimentary tickets to the next TheatreLab Production and other goodies!)

The idea behind using the space for trivia grows from the fact that theater companies around the country are looking at tougher financial times. Still reeling from COVID and the changes that came from folks choosing to ‘stay in’ vs. supporting local theater, can be felt everywhere. TheatreLab decided to make their space one of fun, where folks can laugh, relax and find ways to connect with audiences in various ways. So far, the approach has been successful!

The trivia night takes place at:

TheatreLab Dayton Studio. 116 North Jefferson Street. Dayton, Ohio 45402. The event is hosted by the ‘Queen‘ of trivia, Josh Stucky. Suggested donation $10, reserve your seat here.

TheatreLab‘s Mission is to be a place where artists come together to cultivate ideas into works of art. Focusing on music-based live theater, The Lab takes an ensemble approach to its process, letting each artist have a voice while the piece grows organically. The Lab prides itself on visually stunning works that examine the experiment of life in a way our audiences have not seen before.

Heart-Warming ‘One Life’ is a Beacon of Hope for the Modern World.

March 18, 2024 By Joshua Stucky

We need heroes these days. People to take us from this incessant era of anger, heart-ache and the fake bliss that is social media. We need people who think beyond themselves. People who look to help others in the face of evil and terror. Our time, this time in the world is not anything new or out of the ordinary. There will always be poverty, war, homeless and HATE. We have those in check, and so, what we need are heroes like the one depicted in ‘One Life,’ a film now showing at the Neon Movies.

It is rare I think to write about film. It’s always ‘iffy’ to go there. But, if you like a recommendation, here it is. Sitting at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘One Life’ is proving to be that little film with a big heart, and a big consensus “You should see it…”

Anthony Hopkins (the perfect pick) stars in the film,  along with Helena Bonham-Carter (a role made for her) and Johnny Flynn (such a strong, staid performance.) Flynn plays the younger Nicky Winton. the hero of our story. Winton was instrumental in saving lives during the occupation of Czechoslovakia. His focus was on the children, who needed an escape from the oncoming Nazi regime. 5 decades later, Hopkins, the elder Winton, reflects on, and is haunted by, what became of those children. And we are in for an emotional roller-coaster, as the story unfolds, almost told too conventionally….Here is what happened, and here is why it mattered. But within that conventional style, we are given the facts, and the faces of heroes. (Bring your Kleenex) It all comes together with the film’s defining moments, and our hearts are, alas, FULL!

Though there will be times when you want to push the needle forward more quickly and with more finesses in the film, it’s the beauty of the actors’ performances that keep us engaged. The children in the film alone seem like seasoned performers, tugging at our heart-strings, yet never letting us forget the horror they are facing. The atmosphere, both in flashbacks and in the later years, is well-executed….there are definite ‘moods’ to both.

The film is directed by James Hawes, (the Challenger Disaster, 2013). His modest story-telling in ‘One Life‘ again retains his desire to get the story right…and let the reality in that, do the work. The movie is based on the book ‘ If It’s Not Impossible…: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton.’ by Barbara Winton.

For Winton, it was always about doing what’s right by people. Within the hour and 45 minute film, you cannot help but think about our world….anti-semitism, invasion, refugees, and of course, the misplaced children. Injustice…I mean isn’t that what always brings about rising heroes…in film and in life. You will leave the theater, teary-eyed and wondering who will save us from ourselves…in our ‘One Life?’

Catch ‘One Life’ at the Neon until 3/28! Info Below:

If you’re heading to ‘HADESTOWN’….’Wait For Me!’

March 13, 2024 By Joshua Stucky

For those of us who went through mythology classes, we know the story. We know the beginning, the middle, and yes, the END! THAT ENDING! Like most of the Dayton audience, I felt the need to change it up…to make it different….to stop the inevitable….but ‘It’s a sad song, and we’re gonna sing it anyway!’ From the jump, ‘Hadestown‘ dives right into the story. Our focus falls to Orpheus (J Antonio Rodriguez…with a falsetto like no other)  and his love for Eurydice (Amaya Braganza, with her smooth, solid voice). The tale is rough and wrought with issues…hunger, poverty and longing. It grinds…until the frenetic Persephone makes her entrance. The character, one for the mythological ages, is played with an almost gymnastic quality by Lana Gordon. (She will wow you in the second act!) If you recall, Persephone lives half of the year with her hubs Hades (Matthew Patrick Quinn…who adds an emotional quality to his character, which I’ve not seen in previous performances). Their troubled relationship ebbs and flows throughout, delivered with voice and VOICES!

The story moves on the ‘track’, taking us from Eurydice‘s strife of freezing and needing sustenance; through Orpheus‘ idealism and hope to bring Spring along; Persephone‘s time ‘down below’ casting the world into cold and dark; and Hades strict control of his underworld, where lyrics on building walls, and silencing uprisings seem timely, today!

As the train continues forward…barreling into hell, we wish we could stop things…the decisions Eurydice‘s makes for her future; the anger Hades feels for the world he cannot control; the choice of Orpheus to take the ‘test!’ (DON’T DO IT!!). And throughout, there is this emotional current pulling at our heartstrings as we go. (There were tears from many in the audience as fate deals us that ‘blow.’) All the while, we relate. We relate to the themes whispering in our ears….doubt, worry, survival. Those voices brought to life through strong vocals from the Fates ( Marla Louissaint, Hannah Schreer & Lizzie Markson.)

Throughout our show, the onstage musicians take us on a musical ride that truly is dynamic. They are, each and every one, masters of their craft. You almost want a concert featuring…well…just them! And along with them is Hermes (played by the endearing Will Mann). He connects so well, reminding us that this not gonna be easy!

No doubt, the story could drag, but the visuals (the lighting, the special effects), the set (with its nod to New Orleans) and the sounds (especially during the beloved ‘Why we Build The Wall’) keep us enthralled and engaged. It is hard to let your attention wander.

Look, this isn’t your run of the mill Broadway show. It’s obscure, and handles political issues seamlessly. It has songs that are beyond our everyday Broadway experience (‘Doubt Comes In‘, ‘Our Lady of the Underground‘, ‘Hey, Little Songbird‘) It tackles a classic tale with hope for a resolution, and then takes us where we knew were going all along. It’s eerie and odd, beautiful yet broken.

There’s a reason ‘Hadestown‘ can at times be polarizing. Strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. In the words of a friend in attendance ‘I hate unhappy endings.’ To that I say, ‘It’s a sad song, and we’re gonna sing it anyway!’

Hidden Gems of Cox Arboretum

March 13, 2024 By Dayton937

Cox Arboretum MetroPark is famous for its beautifully landscaped gardens, water features, Monet Bridge, the tree tower, weddings, and events at the beautiful Zorniger Education Center.

Less known are the beautiful, wooded hiking trails:

Starting at the parking lot, you can get on the paved path to the right of the visitor’s center and walk into the Woodland Wildflower Area where you can join the red trail, a short 0.6 mile loop, and part of the MetroParks Trails Challenge.

If you are up for a longer loop, take the 1.1 mile blue loop trail as it splits to the right and head into the woods and past a lovely overlook.

For a longer hike on the 1.8 mile yellow loop, pass the blue loop turnoff and keep going along the blue and red combined trail until you can turn right on the yellow loop. This trail takes you deeper into the woods and allows for a surprising amount of hill work. Try the yellow loop twice to get in a nice 5k trail run. To mix it up, run one loop clockwise and one counterclockwise.
When you come out of the woods take time to experience the amazing gardens, Children’s Maze, gazebos and water features. Finally, climb the tree tower for a spectacular view of the woods you just went through and the surrounding area.

Ramadan Has Begun

March 11, 2024 By Dayton937

The 2024 Ramadan season starts began March 10 and ends April 9. This is an annual holiday for Islam that is known for daily fasting. The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations during daylight hours to achieve greater “taqwa”, or consciousness of God. The word “Ramadan” itself comes from the Arabic term “Ramad / Ramida,” which means scorching heat or drought. Fasting symbolizes abstinence from eating, drinking, and other physical needs during daylight hours. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, emphasizing piety, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection.

What Does Ramadan Celebrate?

Islam tradition believes that the Prophet Muhammad was given the Qur’an, Islam’s holy text, during Ramadan, according to Britannica.

What Do Muslims Do During Ramadan?

Ramadan is a time of self reflection, prayer and studying the Qur’an.

Muslims practice restraint, one of the five pillars of Islam, during Ramadan. Fasting is the most well known practice of restraint during Ramadan, but it can be interpreted to include sexual activity, immoral behavior and impure or unkind thoughts.

The restraint from these activities is practiced from sun up to sun down. During this time, Muslims may not eat or drink, including water. Muslims will generally eat breakfast before dawn and dinner after dusk. The early morning breakfast is called suhur, and is most commonly eaten at home. The evening meal is called iftar and is often a communal event. Iftar may take place at mosques or community centers.

Because fasting is physically taxing, exemptions are often given for children, elderly, pregnant women and the ill.

The end of the Ramadan fast is celebrated as one of the two major Muslim holidays, called Eid ul-Fitr,  Gifts, celebrations, special prayers and sermons are common for Eid ul-Fitr.

Looking at 2024’s Election…through Younger Eyes!

March 7, 2024 By Y. K. Cuts

Here We Go Again!

Curt (names changed for article) is a junior in education at Wright State University. He is part of a class that is learning about Democracy, and just how precious it really is.

‘We are all invested in saving the voice of the people. I say all, but I really mean, the people I talk to!’ Curt is worried…not so much about young people showing up at the polls, but about his future, and his classmates. ‘We are having to vote to reinstate and reinforce what our parents took for granted. That’s a problem. Why are things ticking backward? Where is the country they were living in?’

For Jordin, it’s a bit diferent. ‘This Class (ED2100:Education in a Democracy) has made me mad. I mean, that’s no fault of the Professor (who sits to her left). It’s the fact that it seems like we keep focusing in on old white guys. (Which their professor just happens to be.) Why are we only seeing these guys, and what’s worse, seeing them AGAIN! I mean, of all the people in this country and we have these 2 to choose from? Again? Time to evolve America!’

There are 18 students in the class, and weekly, topics that bring about the fundamentals of a Democracy are discussed. The professor likes to make sure that each week, a current event or issue is talked through.

‘We talk about it all. Feminism, LGBTQ, Guns, Drugs, Capitalism, Hate Speech, Religion….and so much more. These students have strong, educated opinions. They are engaged and have brains like sponges! They want information…’

Jodin interjects ‘But NOT misinformation! People think we look at TikTok and say ‘that’s reality…’ We are not stupid. We know when we are being led astray,’

Using Their Voice!

Sharnice jumps in, ‘And we can figure out what the media, no matter which side it is leaning into, is trying to sell. We grew up knowing that news is biased. Our parents didn’t. It was 2 or 3 stations and they gave out the headlines. Period. Now it’s some crazy-ass giving their opinion for 60 minutes at a time.’ She scoots back in her chair and raises her hand in a ‘ok, I’m done,’ fashion.

The Professor smiles and nods. ‘I want them to research that in particular. We spend time looking into reliable sources. Misinformation is a cancer. It’s nearly impossible to overcome. And, extremists on both sides, are allowing it to divide us very deeply.ON thing I stress ie Republicans and Democrats are Americans…that should be the tie that binds!’

‘At first, I was like, I’m not voting this time around…’ Curt adds. ‘Now, after having a chance to talk about stuff, I will always vote. And with a passion for it. Our professor pushes us…he tells us things that are balanced and fair. He defends both sides…’

Topics to Discuss!

‘Or doesn’t defend either side. This is how America should be talking! Like we do in class. Openly, and unafraid, We are watching our leaders act like fools. I mean, they don’t do their job. Why the hell aren’t they fired?’ Sharnice goes in hard…’Watching them go at each other, or fighting  about WOKE, or calling names, or bitching about gas prices, when they have it all!! They literally have everything they need. I told our prof, why is it the ones complaining the loudest have everything? Money, big house, golf course? And they show up on tv…acting like somebody took something from them! Turn your attention to the U.S.A. We need shit!’

The group laughs, but feels the pain she feels. Sharnice shared she is barely able to afford school but she wants to teach kids and will find a way!

Ellie, finally, chimes in. ‘Everyone knows I’m one of the more conservative members of class. I do want to state I do believe in a woman’s right to choose, so don’t start in on me Jordin…’ they all laugh…’I grew up in a very religious household and those values carried me through a lot. I’m empathetic…and I try to be compassionate as much as I am able. I just think we have to protect our streets, We need to have great jobs. We need a strong economy. I feel like families are struggling. They will all tell you that I find a lot of liberal ideas are not well thought out. They are not tried. It’s like, ok that didn’t work, so now let’s spend a bunch of money on this. That seems dangerous at times. I think it’s unfair to hard-working people.’

You can feel a little tension in the room. Curt breaks the silence. ‘I hear what you are saying Ell, I do. I respect your strong opinion.’

WSU Students Talk It out!

To their professor, the class is working well when they get to this point. They are developing a way to ‘agree to disagree.’

Sharnice wraps up the conversation in a pretty little bow….’We have break in 6 minutes. Here’s what’s really cool. We all go together and get coffee at ReyRey and come back ready to talk so more! Look, who knows who will be our next leader. We just know it’s best to support each other!’

More to come as we head into the election of 2024…..

Dayton Named to USA TODAY’s Top Places to View the Total Solar Eclipse

March 6, 2024 By Dayton937

Dayton and Montgomery County are preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime event on Monday, April 8, as a Total Solar Eclipse will plunge the region into darkness for 2 minutes and 43 seconds, beginning at 3:09 p.m.

Adding to the excitement, USA TODAY just named Dayton as one of the 12 best places in the country to see the eclipse!

For those planning to “get mooned” in the Dayton & Montgomery County area, the Dayton Convention & Visitors Bureau (Dayton CVB) has created a special solar eclipse website at www.dayton-eclipse.com. It offers a variety of resources for out-of-town visitors and local residents, including information about the FREE Solar Eclipse Day at Dayton’s primary viewing location, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™.

“As one of the Ohio destinations in the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we expect a significant influx of visitors to Montgomery County and surrounding areas,” said Dayton CVB President and CEO Jacquelyn Powell.

Powell continued, “The Dayton Convention & Visitors Bureau’s eclipse website serves as a ‘one-stop shop’ for those seeking information about viewing the eclipse here. It’s the first total solar eclipse in Ohio since 1806, the last one the continental U.S. will experience until 2044, and the last one Ohio will experience until 2099.”

The website includes general information about viewing the eclipse, including planning and safety tips, a listing of local eclipse viewing events, as well as other area events and activities happening in conjunction with the eclipse, searchable listings of Montgomery County hotels and restaurants, information about hotels offering special eclipse packages, and information about area attractions. The site will be continuously updated in the weeks leading up to the eclipse.

“With the eclipse occurring on a Monday, our hope is that out-of-town visitors will come early and stay after the eclipse, to experience everything that Dayton has to offer,” Powell said. “We expect the eclipse to have an increased economic impact for the region.”

Through March 9, visitors to the Dayton CVB’s eclipse website can also enter to win a Dayton Eclipse Get-Away package, including a two-night stay at the Drury Inn & Suites Dayton North on April 7 & 8, plus a Dayton Solar Eclipse Gift Basket.

The site includes information about eclipse activities at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™, which will serve as the area’s primary viewing location for the eclipse on April 8.

“As Dayton’s largest attraction, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is an ideal location for an eclipse viewing event,” Powell said. “It offers ample free parking and open green space to accommodate visitors, as well as access to a world-class museum, encompassing 19 indoor acres, that will be open to visitors the day of the eclipse.”

Planned happenings at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™ take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include: hands-on educational activities for families; rocket launches presented by the Wright Stuff Rocketeers; a hot-air balloon glow from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; live-streams of NASA’s eclipse coverage; eclipse presentations; and a free 30-minute Air Force Band of Flight concert following the eclipse. Food trucks will be on-site throughout the day, and the museum galleries, including the new Dinosaurs in Motion exhibit, will be open to visitors until 6 p.m. In preparation for the eclipse, the museum will also offer in-person and live-stream eclipse-themed educational classes scheduled throughout March. Detailed information about the museum’s eclipse activities can be found atnationalmuseum.af.mil/Upcoming/Eclipse.

Other Dayton-area eclipse viewing events to be held on April 8 include:

  • Boonshoft Museum of Discovery: Planetarium shows, solar observing, science lab demos and more
  • Sunwatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park: A ticketed, day-long event at the historic site
  • Aullwood Audubon Farm: Eclipse viewing and art-making activities with local artist Chris Rowlands
  • Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park: Free watch parties at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, Wright Memorial and Huffman Prairie Flying Field
  • Woodland Historic Cemetery and Arboretum: Ticketed event with eclipse viewing, food trucks and more
  • National Aviation Heritage Area (NAHA) sites: Various viewing events at NAHA aviation sites through Dayton and the Miami Valley

Visit the CVB’s eclipse site for more information about these and other events. Montgomery County attractions and businesses holding eclipse-related events can go to the CVB websiteto submit those events for inclusion in the calendar.

“The Dayton Convention & Visitors bureau looks forward to welcoming many first-time visitors to the Dayton area for a safe and fun experience on April 8,” Powell said. “With thousands of visitors expected in the region for the total solar eclipse, we encourage both local residents and those coming into the area to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and be patient and welcoming.”

As Dayton and Montgomery County’s destination marketing organization, the Dayton Convention & Visitors Bureau collaboratively leads and advocates for the development of the region’s visitor economy, which contributes to a thriving community, a diverse tax base and lifestyle amenities for everyone to enjoy.

GRETCHEN DURST JACOBS

Opportunity: Create a new body of work in the medium of encaustic monotype for an upcoming solo show at The Dana Wiley Gallery in Dayton.

About the Artist: Gretchen Durst Jacobs (she/her) was born in Dayton, Ohio. She holds a BFA in painting from Wright State University and an MFA from The University of Cincinnati. In 2000 and 2001, she attended The New York Studio School Drawing and Painting Marathons. Her work has been the subject of nine solo exhibitions and various group shows. She has shown in Ohio, the US, Japan, Germany, and Canada.

Artist Statement: “I create non-objective paintings informed by the scale of my body; most of my paintings are near my height and reach from fingertip to fingertip. I am fascinated by the expressive qualities of color, movement, rhythm, and space. I work with themes such as the natural world, climate change, and feminist ideas. A limited and carefully considered color palette plays a dominant role, referencing the body, energy, and power. Muscle memory informs my mark-making, aligning my perception and thoughts.

A carefully designed grid is at the heart of each new painting. The grid forms a hard and soft boundary for the work that creates a tension between the geometry of the grid and the interweaving gesture. This pictorial dichotomy references the relational dualism at work in our modern lives and our environment.”

MIKE LONDON

He is the Ohio Regional Representative for the Dramatists Guild of America and a 2023 recipient of a Governor’s Award in the Arts in Ohio.

Artist Statement: “A belief that I keep at the center of my work as a playwright is that stories are the textbooks for life. It is where we learn about ourselves. There are two key themes throughout my work: secrets and families.

Secrets are the threads that weave through my stories. What fascinates me is learning the histories and stories that aren’t remembered; the secrets of our society. I love discovering secrets that are often at the core of who we are, what we do, and who have come before us. Uncovering those secrets takes me to the truth of who we are and who we can be.

Families are the context of my stories. Whether it’s the families we know, the ones we don’t, the ones we think we know, or the families we create where none exist—all are the context for where we have come from and what lies ahead.

I have written in other forms; however, I am a playwright. It is my way to tell stories and add to that textbook of life.”
