Anticoli’s Famous Garlic Dressing Now Available!

June 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

1931 was an important year for the Anticoli family. It was on New Year’s Eve or 1931 that   Antonio and Sarah Anticoli opened their first establishment, “The Rendezvous” in Dayton, Ohio. This would become the foundation of what would be an 87-year run of continuous restaurant operations for 3 generations of family owners.

After 20 years at this original spot on East Fifth Street in St Anne’s Hill (photo-above w/ Antonio behind the counter), the Anticoli family moved to Salem Avenue in North Dayton in 1951 and renamed the restaurant Anticoli’s.  In the 1960s and 1970s, Leo oversaw the restaurant’s kitchen, while his brother, Tony, and sister, Gloria, ran the front of the restaurant.

After their parents died in the late 1970s, Leo, Gloria and Tony continued to run the eatery with help from the third generation of Anticolis.  The Salem Ave restaurant closed in 2000.  Leo then launched Caffe Anticoli, which operated on North Main Street in Clayton from 2000 to 2010. After it closed, Leo and his son Chris moved south to open Anticoli’s Giuliano Tavern in Miamisburg, adding the reference to Leo’s father’s hometown in Italy to the restaurant name. That business closed on June 7, 2015.

Leo’s son Michael opened La Piazza in Troy in 1992, and ran it quite successfully until he closed it in February of 2018.  In discussing why he closed it Michael shared how he’d watched his whole family dedicate their lives to the business, working well into their old age as the restaurants daily.  He decided he didn’t want to do that, and instead decided to create a balanced life for him and his family.  Yet he couldn’t totally walk away from his families legacy.

If you dined at any of these Anticoli establishments, no doubt you remember their House Dressing.  Michael Anticoli, who is the 3rd generation of this famed family of restaurateurs is now making the dressing available through Anticoli Specialty Foods website or this summer at the 2nd Street Market.  He makes this dressing in small batches with no additives at a production facility in Troy.

Created so many years ago by Michael’ s grandparents and carried on today by him.
You can use as so much more than just salad dressing.  Michael suggests using it on
chicken, shrimp, steak, meatballs, pasta, eggs even a simple turkey sandwich is blown away when you spread
The Dressing on your favorite bread or lettuce wrap.
A 16 oz. container is only $10.

It’s Gluten-free, Dairy-free and Sugar-Free.

Ingredients: Garlic, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, Canola Oil, Vinegar, Herbs, Spices

Three Birds Dayton Opening June 17th

June 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Big Bird, Larry Bird and Lady Bird Johnson, what do these 3 have in common?

They all appear on the walls of Dayton’s newest restaurant, Three Birds.  It’s touches like these you’ll find all over the building that clue you in that the thought behind this restaurant is playful and fun.

The Idea Collective, a hospitality development company  who have  brought us Sueño and Tender Mercy downtown are currently in a soft opening previews for their new eatery in the former Carmel’s space on Shroyer Road. I was lucky enough to get an invitation to Thursday nights meal, which would be donating a percentage of the proceeds to The Ruib Girls.

Chris Dimmick

The  4000 sq foot restaurant, which was originally opened in the 50’s as the Parkmoor, has seen massive remodeling. After closing on the property in November of 2024, the Idea Collective started working with Moda4 envisioning how they could respect the building, but modernize it to their vision. Chris Dimmick , one of the owners explains “we stripped the building down to the studs, expanded the kitchen and restrooms and strived hard to honor the mid century feel of the building and feature the light brought in through the windows. The majority of our time so far has just been spent trying to make this concept fit into that building and honoring what’s there and protecting it.”  “The original design for that building actually won architectural awards when it was built as the Parkmoor,” said co-owner David Kittredge said.

The Idea Collective tapped local chef Crystal Coppock to open the restaurant last fall. She’s been cooking in the area for about 20 years at Fleming’s, the sous chef at Meadowlark and most recently as the Chef du Cuisine at The Golden Lamb.
We’ve been impressed with her cooking and attention to detail since she advanced to the finals of our Chef Showdown (Dayton’s local version based on the Chopped TV show)  in 2017.

Crystal Coppock

However not long into their discussions about Three Birds, Crystal had to make the call that she’d suffered an injury that would be career altering and would no longer to be able work up to par daily in the kitchen.  It didn’t take the Idea Collective long to make a decision to offer Crystal the General Manager position for the new restaurant.  Crystal shared, she takes on this challenge “with unbridled excitement. As a chef I’ve always felt connected to front of house and now I’m excited to use my lifetime of experience to move to the front of the house. As chef I was disconnected with guests and diners and now I’ll have the opportunity to really influence the guest experience we offer.”

Coppock explained that the restaurant will feature “New American Cuisine” that is family friendly with a selection of crafted cocktails, wine and beer and a menu that will change seasonally, allowing them to take advantage of local foods.  Here’s the opening menu and some pictures of the dishes we enjoyed:

Opening Menu

The pimento cheese has a bit of a quick and is served with a sleeve of Ritz crackers, which takes you right back to childhood enjoyment of this treat.

Corndog Shrimp with a spicy mustard and mango jam were inspired by owners David Kittredge, and Ginger Roddick’s memories of the dish served in Austin Texas at the Moonshine Grill.

The Steak Frites was perfectly cooked and filling for even the largest appetite.

The Cacio e Pepe was rich and creamy.

Be sure and leave room for dessert as the  Basque Cheesecake with poppyseed crumble, and the Chocolate Budino (our tables favorite) were rich and decadent.
For their second night of service I was impressed with how quickly food came out of the kitchen and the smiles and spot on service from the staff.  I look forward to returning and spending many evenings enjoying cocktails on one of the 90 seats on the patio and making my way though the rest of the menu.

Ohio’s Recreational Cannabis Purchase Limits Increased

June 4, 2025 By Guest Contributor

Under the new rules, those 21 and older will be allowed to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower per day, a notable increase from the previous limit of 2.5 ounces every nine days. The limit for non-flower products—such as edibles, tinctures, and vape cartridges—will be set at 15,000 milligrams of total THC per day. For context, a 500 mg vape and a 100 mg pack of gummies would count as 600 mg toward this cap.

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=14OsTD_11YrZCRs00

The new limits apply only to recreational users. Medical marijuana patients will still follow the state’s 90-day supply framework, and dispensaries are required to prioritize product availability for these patients.

The Division clarified that while dispensaries are permitted to sell up to the new maximum amounts, they are not obligated to do so. Retailers must also ensure their inventory systems properly track THC content in accordance with state reporting requirements, and any procedural changes must be logged through the DCC’s eLicense portal.

Ohio legalized recreational cannabis in 2023, with the market officially launching in August 2024. Since then, the state has generated around $750 million in sales across over 10 million transactions.

The post Ohio’s Recreational Cannabis Purchase Limits to Increase  appeared first on The Marijuana Herald.

Downtown Steakhouse To Open Friday

June 4, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Local entrepreneur Carl Johnson (who currently owns Members Only 937 and previously owned Club Kixx, The Fox and The Arena)  has created an upscale dining spot downtown with TearDrop Steakhouse.  He’s brought in his nephew Chef Jay Jones who runs Celebrity Platinum Catering to run the kitchen.  They’ve been looking for a spot for a couple of years, almost inking a deal with The Greene, before the complexes bankruptcy put that deal on ice.  They looked at the former Table 33 location and then were contacted by Demetrius Wright, the owner of 1Eleven Flavor House when he heard he was looking.  They worked at a deal for the First Street location now they’ve hired 60 employees and been training them to produce steaks so good, you’ll drop a tear when you taste them. All steaks will be served with a tear drop of herb garlic butter, that will melt down your steak upon presentation.

Opening for service this Friday, June 6th, guests are encouraged to call for reservations at (937) 496-5535. There is seating for 96 guests including the bar stools inside and an additional 32 seats will be available once the patio is completed.

Johnson asks for grace from their guests as they open, knowing it will take some time for their staff to learn and perfect their service.  He says, “we’ll learn quickly from any mistakes and quickly correct them, but we have to start serving guests to perfect our service.”

The record was nominated for 4 GRAMMY® Awards and won 4 American Music Awards, alongside 7 Billboard Music Awards, including “Album of the Year.” Subsequent albums, Leave This Town (2009), Break The Spell (2011), and Baptized (2013) have all gone Platinum, with Cage To Rattle (2018) certified Gold. Q+ Card Supports Area LGBTQ+ Youth Center

June 3, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Q+ Youth Center in Dayton is run by a group of volunteers dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive space for Queer Youth to thrive.

Formed in response to the continued rise of youth suicides, specifically amongst queer and trans individuals, the Q+ Youth Center board seeks to create more than a building. The members of the board and volunteers from the community are working towards impactful and lasting change in Ohio that leads to the success and brilliance of our youth.

The Q+ Youth Center Project understands the importance of providing a safe space for 7th-12th grade students who identify as LGBTQIA+. Their mission is to empower, support, and mentor these young individuals by creating an environment where they can freely express themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

“I hope no youth has to feel alone like I did while coming into my own being. If we can make a safe space for their growth, it will only make the future brighter. That’s worth supporting.” Michael Green, Digital Marketing Manager, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company

The center’s goal is to fund youth events, mentor programs, and ultimately a brick and mortar facility with a focus on the young minds in the greater Gem city region.

You can help support them by purchasing their merchant  card good at 16 local restaurant/stores. You’ll enjoy discounts to all of your favorite Q+ supporting businesses!  Q+ Discount Card for 2025-2026!! For a $25 donation, you will get discounts ALL YEAR LONG. Burger King Turns 71 and Celebrates with Deals

June 2, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Burger King is turning 71. Originally named Instant Burger King, the chain opened in 1954, a year before the first McDonald’s. A burger and milkshake restaurant, BK’s captured burger lovers’ attention in 1957 when it introduced the Whopper (just 37 cents at the time), still a staple on the menu.

In the decades since, it’s introduced countless other products, including breakfast sandwiches, chicken nuggets, chicken fries, wraps, and so much more to go with its fries, onion rings, and desserts—all designed to satisfy taste buds while traditionally offering value and letting guests “have it your way.”

Burger King is celebrating its birthday by giving away free burgers, mozzarella fries, onion rings, and other menu favorites all month long.  To get a new freebie each day, you must be a member of Burger King’s Royal Perks, its rewards program.
Here’s what you can get:

  • June 4: National Cheese Day means a free order of Mozzarella Fries (4 pc.) with a $1+ purchase for an extra cheesy snack.
  • June 15: To celebrate father figures on their special day, give the gift of a BOGO Whopper, available all Father’s Day long.
  • June 22: For National Onion Ring Day (because this favorite side deserves a day all its own), members can redeem a free order of Onion Rings (any size!).
  • June 1-June 30: Enjoy BOGO Impossible Whoppers all month long.
