The Rose Announces Two More Shows

April 11, 2023 By Dayton937

Grammy Award-winning guitarist Peter Frampton is back on the road —the Never Say Never Tour will kick off atRose Music Center at The Heights on Wednesday, June 21.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show I did say, ‘Never Say Never’ and I am always full of hope for the impossible. I’m very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I’m so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer. Much love.” – Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, Frampton won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. He received the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award from NAMM’s TEC Awards in 2019 and his album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard’s Blues Chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim. Grammy award-winning group The Temptations are teaming up with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame quartet The Four Tops for a night of legendary hits, signature dance moves, and unmistakable harmonies at Rose Music Center at The Heights on Friday, July 28.

THE TEMPTATIONS

The Temptations, often referred to as “American Music Royalty,” are world-renowned superstars of entertainment, revered for their phenomenal catalog of music and prolific career. The group celebrated their 60thAnniversary throughout 2022. To mark this milestone, The Temptations released a brand-new album, Temptations 60, with nearly all-original songs in January of 2022 and toured in the U.S., United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Ranked #1 in Billboard magazine’s most recent list of the “Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of All Time,” The Temptations also appear in the magazine’s 125th Anniversary list of the “125 Greatest of All Time Artists.” In addition, Rolling Stone magazine named the group among the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” In September of 2020, the editors of Rolling Stone magazine commented that The Temptations are “Indisputably the greatest black vocal group of the Modern Era…,” and listed the group’sAnthology album among the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The Anthology album has appeared in all three of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums’ lists.

The Temptations’ heritage, influence and contributions to, not only American culture and African American communities but also to the global music landscape are monumental. The influence that the Temptations have had on mainstream and global artists is undeniable. The group’s popularity is ever-increasing, and they are one of the most iconic, bestselling brands in the entertainment world today.

The group’s 60-year history spans both the 20th and 21st centuries and their music transcends generations. The Temptations’ story is a road map through American history. What began in Detroit, when a remarkable combination of soulful voices united, was the genesis of an epic journey that introduced multiple superstars to the world and produced some of the greatest music of our era.

Considered trailblazers in the 60’s, leading the way, not only for themselves, but for other R&B artists and successfully reaching mainstream audiences here and abroad, the Temptations’ rise to fame was meteoric. When the legendary “Classic Five,” (Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams and David Ruffin) released the single, “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” in 1964, which peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Chart and remained on the list for 11 weeks, it marked the beginning of a multitude of award-winning and chart-topping songs and albums that would be embraced by popular music audiences globally.

They were among the first African American musical artists to crossover into mainstream America and appear on popular, national mainstream television programs, such as The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Hollywood Palace. The group’s star power was so striking that these top-rated, national programs, and many others, scheduled appearances for the Temptations multiple times during a single year. At the time, this was an unparalleled accomplishment for African American entertainers.

The Temptations, throughout the group’s evolution, have produced 53 Billboard Hot 100 Hit singles, including four that became #1 Pop singles: “My Girl,” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Additionally, they released 43 Top 10 R&B hit singles, 14 of which were #1 R&B hits, including timeless classics such as “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and songs influenced by their funk/psychedelic soul sound including “Happy People,” and “Shakey Ground.” The group also has 16 #1 R&B Albums. The Temptations’ music, then and now, continues to raise the spirit of the country and uplift a nation searching for common bonds and glimmers of hope and humanity.

The Temptations are the recipients of numerous awards and honors. The group has been awarded more than 50 Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum awards all combined. They have been awarded five Grammy® Awards (and have received nine Grammy® nominations), including the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy® Award at the 56thAnnual Grammy® Awards (2013). In 1989, The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group was also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, and into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013. They were invited back to the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2017 to receive “The R&B Male Group of the 20th Century” Award. They received the NAACP Image Award “Hall of Fame Award” in 1992. On September 14, 1994, the Temptations were given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, California, and on June 7, 2019 given a star on the Apollo Theater’s Walk of Fame in Harlem in New York City.

The Temptations always look forward to serenading fans with their soulful voices, lighting up stages with their famous Temptations’ Walk, and bringing joy to audiences of all ages.

THE FOUR TOPS

The legendary quartet, originally called the Four Aims, made their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade.

Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers; “It’s The Same Old Song” (no. 2 R&B/no. 5 pop), no. 1 “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” (no. 2 R&B/no. 6 pop) and “Bernadette” (no. 3 R&B/no. 4 pop). Other Tops hits include “Ask The Lonely,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over),” “Something About You,” “You Keep Running Away,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom” and many more.

In 1990, with 24 Top-40 pop hits to their credit, the Four Tops were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Though they would no longer have hits on record, the group continued to be a hit in concert, touring incessantly, a towering testament to the enduring legacy of the Motown Sound they helped shape and define.

“The Four Tops will always be one of the biggest and the best groups ever. Their music is forever.” – Smokey Robinson

Tickets for both shows will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, April 14 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office.

This Must Be the Party hits the stage this Friday at The Brightside

April 10, 2023 By Dayton Most Metro

One of the most celebrated music events in Dayton during the last decade is back! This Must Be the Party is a local super group who performs a fantastic tribute to The Talking Heads. Fans love the complete recreation of the classic album and documentary film Stop Making Sense that they perform! Catch them for an exclusive show Friday April 14, 2023 at The Brightside, in downtown Dayton.

Few bands are as well-known in the music industry as the Talking Heads. The band, which was founded in the middle of the 1970s, contributed to the development of a new musical genre that would later come to rule the radio in the 1980s. The Talking Heads were one of the most innovative and forward-thinking bands of their period with their special fusion of rock, groove, and New Wave. It’s no wonder that Dayton audiences love this tribute show!

Due to the Covid shutdown, This Must Be the Party hasn’t performed since 2019, so this is a highly anticipated event! The best part is that part of the proceeds from this show go to benefit The Seedling Foundation, an organization that supports the arts magnet at Stivers School for the Arts. It’s a musical celebration to support music education!

If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing this amazing show already, you know how much fun to expect! (Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes!) This go around, there is a very special guest joining the show. Sammi Garett, from the national touring acts Turquaz, Cool Cool Cool, & The Bump Assembly, is flying in from Brooklyn to join the crew! She’s an absolutely fabulous singer and performer, and she’s excited to perform in Dayton for the first time.

Local original band, Intergalactic Space Force, is kicking off the show at 8:30pm, shortly after doors open. They were Dayton Battle of the Bands finalists last year, and always love an opportunity to perform at The Brightside.

After the Stop Making Sense headlining show, if you’re still ready to boogie, Freekbass will be making his Brightside debut with a “Solo Grooves” after party.

If you get hungry, the venue has coordinated with Phat & Rich to be on site to serve your needs. The Mexican inspired cuisine is a hit with concert goers, so go hungry and hang on the Brightside’s awesome patio between sets.

If you’re looking for a place to pre-game, organizers recommend going to Tender Mercy for their amazing cocktails. “Not only is Tender Mercy our neighbor, they are one of the primary sponsors of this event!” event organizer, Libby Ballengee told us. “Their sister restaurant Sueño, is an amazing spot for dinner too, but I’d get reservations first!”

This Must Be the Party promises to be one of the most memorable events of the spring!

*The band includes: Khrys Blank, Nathan Lewis, Patrick Himes, Brian Hoeflich, Erich Reith, Aaron Holmes, Matt Byanski, Eric Cassidy, Nathan Peters, Christopher Corn, Brian Spirk, with special guest Sammi Garett.

HOW TO GO?

When: April 14, 2023

Where: The Brightside Music & Event Venue, 905 E 3rd St, Dayton, OH

Blanton’s Straight From the Barrel was named for former distillery president Colonel Albert B. Blanton, who always had a special private reserve of bourbon stored in legendary Warehouse H. The Blanton’s brand was launched in 1984, when Elmer T. Lee introduced the world to Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon a year before he retired. In doing so, he revolutionized the industry with the world’s first single barrel bourbon. Blanton’s Straight From the Barrel was the third version created, after the Original 93 proof and Gold 103 proof. A cask-strength bourbon beloved by Blanton’s fans, its high alcohol by volume is intense and powerful, yet inviting. With nutty, caramel, and vanilla notes of flavor and a warming finish, get ready to experience a pour that’s unfiltered, uncut, and unbelievable.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Dark chocolate, caramel, with earthy undertones of walnut and hazelnut
  • Flavor: Warm vanilla, oak, toasted nuts, and a rich spiciness with hints of butterscotch or honey
  • Finish: Powerful, dry, and warm

ELMER T. LEE SINGLE BARREL – $40.99

Elmer T. Lee, the revered Master Distiller for Buffalo Trace for 36 years, was also an innovator who brought the first mass-produced single barrel products to market. Named in honor of the Master Distiller Emeritus, this whiskey is hand-selected and bottled to the taste and standards set forth by Elmer T. Lee himself. It is a high rye single barrel that is perfectly balanced and rich, which is very fitting for a man who knew how great bourbon should taste.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Clove, vanilla, and old leather
  • Taste: Balances fruit, honey, and vanilla with a light spiciness
  • Finish: A long and warm finish

MICHTER’S SINGLE BARREL 20 YEAR BOURBON – $1,149.99

While Michter’s regularly samples its barrels to see how its whiskey is aging, they pay extra special attention to them once they’re over 17 years old. Michter’s considers 17-20 years the “fork in the road point,” when certain barrels of whiskey can achieve an extraordinary level of quality. Master Distiller Dan McKee personally selects from those barrels for the brand’s very limited bottling of its opulent Michter’s 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Intense notes of black cherry
  • Flavor: Rich molasses and honeysuckle, with notes of roasted pecans and toasted charred oak

OLD FITZGERALD 19 YEAR BOTTLED-IN-BOND – $239.99

Each spring and fall, a new edition to the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond series is released. Inspired by an original 1950’s Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter, the packaging and series honor both the history of the Old Fitzgerald brand and the historic Bottled-in-Bond designation. The Old Fitzgerald line is well known for its distilling pedigree, as the brand was first registered in 1884 and was eventually sold to “Pappy” Van Winkle during Prohibition. In 1999, Heaven Hill bought the brand and began distilling it at Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, KY.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Pepper and baking spices
  • Flavor: Rich butterscotch, cocoa powder, and complex spices, along with dried fig notes
  • Finish: Warm baking spices with milk chocolate and a pepper finish; finally, a hint of toasted oak

PARKER’S HERITAGE COLLECTION 16TH EDITION – $174.99

The 16th edition of the Parker’s Heritage Collection consists of 67% 13-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey that has been double barreled and then blended post-aging, and 33% 15-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. The 13-year-old bourbon was aged on Floors 5, 6, and 7 of Rickhouse Q, then re-barreled in new American white oak barrels with a Level 3 Char for four weeks. Next, it was blended with 15-year-old bourbon aged on Floors 2 and 5 of Rickhouse II. The double barreling of the 13-year-old bourbon helped to bring out even more oak and spice notes from the barrel, while further blending with older bourbon helped to create a unique, bold, and balanced flavor profile. At bottling, the liquid was uncut and non-chill filtered to preserve its complex flavors and truly distinctive character.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Oak forward with hints of butterscotch and caramel
  • Flavor: Spiced notes mixed with sweetness and light oak tannins
  • Finish: Long and warm with elements of dark chocolate, baking spices, and white pepper

WELLER SINGLE BARREL – $49.99

William Larue Weller first produced his legendary wheated bourbon in 1849. The pioneering distiller was the first to substitute wheat for the traditional rye grain in the mash bill. Weller’s gentle, mild, and smooth sipping experience changed whiskey as we know it. Handpicked and bottled one exceptional barrel at a time, this special release is bourbon to be savored, delivering nuanced variations from the aging process. For the refined bourbon palate, no two barrels are quite the same. Expect distinct, full-bodied flavor in the celebrated tradition of Weller’s wheated bourbon.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Cherry and mint, fading to vanilla
  • Flavor: Caramel and baking spices with hints of cocoa explode on the palate
  • Finish: Cinnamon, coffee, and a hint of pepper

WILLETT FAMILY ESTATE 6 YEAR BOURBON – $131

Willett Family Estate Bourbon is unique in that this designation is used solely for the Willett family’s Private Barrel Selection program, and is the only label of its kind in existence. This single barrel Kentucky bourbon is aged for six years and bottled at barrel proof without chill filtration, resulting in a straight bourbon whiskey of rare depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Light and oaky aroma with dusty and funky undertones
  • Flavor: Earthy and smooth
  • Finish: Sweet on the mid-palate

WILLETT FAMILY ESTATE 8 YEAR BOURBON – $235.98

Like the Willett Family Estate 6 Year Bourbon, the Willett Family Estate 8 Year Bourbon is a single barrel offering released annually in limited quantities. Aged for two years longer than its above counterpart, it’s an ultra-premium, barrel-strength, non-chill filtered Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey that is highly anticipated by enthusiasts each year.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Creamy, nutty almonds alongside vanilla, mint, and candied cinnamon
  • Flavor: Effervescent blend of sweet and spice
  • Finish: Lingering finish from front to mid-palate

“Charcuterie it’s not just for cocktail hour”

April 10, 2023 By Brian Sharp

I am always on the hunt for a great brunch spot.  This weekend we found a gem.  Tucked in a shopping plaza in Troy, just a short drive from downtown Dayton is redBERRY.  Its name gives homage to the love of the red berry in Troy, home to the Strawberry Festival.  I was in Sidney for work, and was just driving back home and googled places for brunch near me.  redBERRY came up in the search and I am so glad it did.  There was a short wait when we arrived so we added our name to the list and started looking over the menu.  Things seemed just too good to be true.  This is a very diverse menu.  Everything from typical breakfast items to great sandwiches a salads.  Bloody Mary’s and even a Mimosa flight.  Well, I knew where I was starting!
We we taken to a booth and offered drinks.  We chose the Mimosa Flight – which included traditional orange, pineapple, cranberry and grapefruit. They come served in mini mason jars with a garnish and clearly labeled.  Not only is it a cute offering – it’s delicious.  We also ordered a starter of the skillet cinnamon roll.  I have said for years that I’ve never met a cinnamon roll that I didn’t like.  However, my favorite cinnamon roll comes from Ann Sather’s in Chicago…this certainly gave Ann a run for her money.  Full of flavor, perfectly cooked in the iron skillet and topped with homemade vanilla bean cream cheese frosting (yes you can see the vanilla in the icing).  Let’s just say, I would go back for the cinnamon roll alone!
We then ordered our brunch.  While there were so many options it was hard to choose.  We had to try the pancake charcuterie board.  It is enough for two or maybe three people to share.  It included healthy options like berries, fruit and nuts.  It also included silver dollar pancakes, sausage and bacon, fried eggs, and toppings (peanut butter, syrup, jam).  This was a culinary delight.
Other menu options include things like: Grilled PBBB&J – mini masterpieces of peanut butter, redBERRY jam, sliced banana, bacon with local honey on toasted wheat bread.  Hangover Chips – kettle chips covered with sausage gravy, bacon, red onion, pepper, american cheese and topped with two over easy eggs. Chicken and Waffles, Omelettes, Skillets, Three different Benedicts, Brisket and Eggs, redBERRY parfait and even Avacado Toast. There drink menu has mimosas, a redBERRY mary, and even Happy Coffee.
redBERRY is busy and clearly popular with the locals.  However, this not so local guy will be back!  Take the short drive to Troy…it’s worth it!

Food Truck Spot Light: Ralph’s Mystery Food

April 7, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Not even a year old yet, Ralph’s Mystery Food Truck debuted last June. Owners Justin and Chet met on an online dating site, started a relationship and planned on taking over a family business.  But things changed during COVID and with both having food backgrounds, Justin with Red Lobster, Bob Evans and Max & Erma’s, and Chet managed a funnel cake trailer for Triple Treat Shows so they decided a food truck would give them the flexibility they wanted.

Korean Corn Dog

Korean Corn Dog- 1/2 corn dog, 1/2 fried cheese with yeast batter and panko bread crumbs and french fries.

They say their most popular sellers really depends on the location but the traditional favorites are always popular. (Funnel Cakes, Fried Oreos, Hand Made and Dipped Corn Dogs, and Fresh Squeezed Lemonade).

The Korean Corn Dogs did well in several areas especially once they were seen and tried. Our Banana Pudding, S’mores, and Oreo Funnel Cakes are definitely  crowd pleasers as well as our  Strawberry Lemonade.

Here’s a sample menu for them, but they emphasize that the “mystery” in their name refers to their constantly changing menus and what they are going to serve at each stop.
