At the beginning of 2015, things had never looked better for The Black Lillies. Winning legions of fans through relentless touring and riding a wave of critical acclaim, the band had already successfully surpassed their PledgeMusic fundraising goals, selected a producer and booked studio time to record their new album when frontman Cruz Contreras was hit with unexpected news: two of the group’s five members would be amicably moving on. Contreras contemplated the group’s future and faced down a looming deadline to finish writing the new album for a yet-to-be-determined lineup.

Mikesells: Tins and New Flavors? ! WIN CHIPS !
Mikesell’s Snack Food Company is bringing back the holiday tins for the first time in 15 years! They are also going to introduce some new flavors in 2016 and we have the scoop.
The Food Adventures Crew was lucky enough to sample the new flavors and we are so excited about the throwback tins, that we are giving away some free chips!
***Want to win some of your favorite hometown potato chips? ***
Then comment below and we will award 3 winners the new tins that are coming to stores next week!
HERE’S THE SKINNY:
— Since 1910, Mikesells Potato Chips have been a part of Dayton life, and still remain family owned today by DW Mikesell’s descendants.
— The tins were wildly popular in the 70’s and 80’s, with throwback designs, celebrating anniversaries such as the 75th and 80th years in business.
— Next week, for the first time in 15 years, grocery stores will start carrying Commerative Tins of Mikesells chips, just in time for the holidays. The tins each contain 2 sealed bags of chips. Tins will be available for a limited time only.
— You can also order the tins online by clicking HERE.
NEW FLAVORS BEING CONSIDERED for 2016:
Mikesells had been testing flavors at the Dragon’s games and at Unversity of Dayton. Food Adventures was lucky enough to get a private sampling of the candidates, some of which will go into production in 2016. Here are the flavors and our comments on them.
— HOT ROASTED GARLIC and DILL: One of the favorites, look for this one to be a hit. Who doesn’t love garlic?
— JALAPENO RANCH: A nice ranch dusting, not overpowering, with a slight kick at the end. Again, not too hot, just enough to take notice. Chef House, the spicy food queen of Dayton, had a smile after sampling these! This was one of Hungry Jax’s top picks too!
— LOADED CHEESEBURGER: The most complex chip, even down to tasting the ketchup. The flavoring brains behind this chip is brilliant. Hungry Jax simply described them as “Aweseome.”
— HONEY BUTTER: The flavor fad that has hit South Korea, may be coming to Dayton. This Honey Butter chip has a very subtle taste, almost muted. A very easy going chip, and would be perfect with dip.
— SMOKED GOUDA: Probably a long shot, as it seems to have a pretty adult palate. May need some tweaking, but they are definitely on to something unique..
— KOREAN BBQ: Very eatable chip, and such a disctinctly unique flavor. We could see Daytonians eating the whole bag here… Hungry Jax voted this as her favorite and The Big Ragu rated this flavor near the top.
— CREAMY WASABI: This one had more bounce to the ounce than expected. The little zing at the end is a perfect flavor finish. The chip was The Big Ragu’s favorite.
WHAT FLAVORS WILL MAKE THE CUT?
As Luke Mapp, Director of Sales and Marketing explains, we wish we could offer them all, but the problem is limited display space. He said that in grocery stores and other outlets, when you introduce new flavors, it often means you have to yank one of the current flavors. All of it is due to limited shelve allowances. Luke knows his stuff. He is the great grandson of founder D.W. Mikesell and has had a lifelong involvement in the company. We want to send out a special thank you to Luke and his staff for being so accommodating on our taste test and facility tour. It was a fun and fascinating evening.
Dear chip lovers and fellow foodies, stay tuned over the next 12 months to see which flavors will make it into stores! But remember, you heard about them here first!
One last comment, Mikesells is introducing another product in February that we were able to sample. Unfortunately, we were sworn to secrecy about its existence. All we can tell you is that is was probably the best thing we tasted that day. Stay locked in to Mikesells and Food Adventures, and we will spill the beans as soon as it comes out in stores!
*** COMMENT BELOW FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A TIN OF MIKESELLS POTATO CHIPS ***

Gals Flock To “Girl Develop It” Chapter
On Saturday, November 14, the Dayton chapter of Girl Develop It (GDI), a national organization dedicated to helping women of diverse backgrounds learn web and software development, will hold the first day of a two-day introductory class on building a website with HTML and CSS. I would tell you to click on over to their website and sign up for the class, but it filled up on the first day.
“We’re thrilled that our HTML/CSS class in November filled up within a day,” said Sara Cope, who is not only the instructor for the class but, along with Catherine Devlin, is also one of the Dayton chapter’s co-founders. “It’s great to see the community as excited about this as we are.”
And the community is definitely excited. The group held a highly successful launch party at Proto Build Bar on October 20th. And on November 2nd the group reached 200 members on its Meetup site. That’s a very large support group for women looking to move into Dayton’s growing tech industry.
Even if you weren’t one of the lucky few to get into this course, the Dayton GDI group has a lot planned for the months ahead. “Next year,” says Ms. Cope, “we’ll offer classes in both front end and back end programming as well as workshops on specific tools like WordPress. We also plan to include sessions that focus on soft skills and job hunting.”
There are other ways to get involved with the group as well. Twice a month the group hosts “Code & Coffee” get togethers at Proto Build Bar. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, December 12th, from 10am to noon and is billed as “Code & Coffee & 3D Printing!!” “This month,” the page for the event says, “we’ll be 3D printing holiday ornaments or decorations with the help of Proto’s awesome staff!” The Code & Coffee events are free and open to everyone, regardless of gender or skill level.
Ms. Cope and Ms. Devlin are also always looking for volunteers to help out with events and other initiatives. “We can’t do this without help from the community!” Ms. Cope stressed. If you are interested in becoming involved in any way, you are encouraged to reach out to the group through their Meetup webpage.

DP&L’s Gift of Power Will Help Local Families Stay Warm
The Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L), is launching a new customer emergency relief program for those struggling to pay their winter heating bills. Gift of Power is designed to assist families during the coldest and highest heating bill months of the year.
The program goal is to prevent disconnection or help restore customers who have been disconnected. Gift of Power will aid customers who may not be eligible for Ohio Energy Assistance programs and have recently incurred a financial hardship, such as the loss of employment, major medical bills or the loss of a spouse.
“Anyone can get behind in paying their bills when the unexpected occurs, and DP&L wants to lighten that load. The Gift of Power program will help customers who are facing disconnection and need assistance with their winter heating bills. We care about our customers’ well-being, and through DP&L’s Gift of Power we can continue keeping these families warm as we enter another winter heating season,” said Tom Raga, DP&L president and CEO.
(Here’s a throwback moment for many DP & L Customers)
DP&L is partnering with The Salvation Army, which will administer the Gift of Power funds. The launch will be marked by a $115,000 corporate grant presented by DP&L’s President and CEO Tom Raga to The Salvation Army. Live Music Showcase in Downtown Troy
Local original music groups Trey Stone & The Ringers, Tim Prichard & The Boxcar Suite, and Jack Ballengee-Morris will perform at a new music venue, Square Roots Records, in downtown Troy, Ohio on Saturday November 14th. Doors open at 7pm, Show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $10 per person. BYOB.
Square Roots Records, a new listening room, recording studio and event space, is officially cutting the ribbon on their space at 106 Market St in downtown Troy on Thursday November 12th. Two days later, they are hosting three of the area’s brightest original music groups: Trey Stone & The Ringers, Tim Prichard & The Boxcar Suite, and Jack Ballengee-Morris. This is the perfect opportunity to check out the incredible sound system, bohemian decor, and cozy vibe! This event is being presented by Venus Child Productions, a new local business that specializes in producing concerts and special events. This is the first all-local concert for VCP, and the first event presented outside the immediate downtown Dayton area. Libby Ballengee, the owner of VCP explains how the idea for this event came about: “I’m a huge fan of the Such A Night: The Last Waltz event at The Dayton Art Institute. I realized a lot of the musicians in that super group have their own original bands. Two groups in particular, Trey Stone & The Ringers and Tim Pritchard & the Boxcar Suite, have the biggest representation of musicians in the Last Waltz. That’s how I got hip to both of these amazing bands. Bringing their original bands together on one stage has been a labor of love.” Capping off this labor of love, is the addition of Ballengee’s own nephew, Jack Ballengee Morris, to the mix. This third-generation Appalachian traditionalist plays acoustic guitar along with a cello player, bringing a contemporary twist to his traditional mountain music sound. Morris was raised in West Virginia, and currently resides in the Columbus area. He is excited to be performing his first concert in the greater Dayton region. Morris’s music is featured in a new documentary, Shelter, by Academy Award winning documentary film maker, Barbara Kopple. The Boxcar Suite takes the stage next, performing their signature sound: home-grown, Midwestern rock’n’roll. Their songs feature thoughtful lyrics set against dynamic guitar arrangements. Fans of Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young will be delighted with this Dayton-based four piece. Check out their newest album, Across the Vast and Deep, on iTunes or by clicking here. Trey Stone & The Ringers are headlining this talented showcase. This eight-piece ensemble is led by keyboardist and songwriter, Trey Stone. Trey served as Musical Director at the famed Second City comedy theater for 15 years, working with many of the greats of modern comedy, including SNL’s Horatio Sanz, Jason Sudeikis, and Vanessa Bayer. His music and sound is inspired by the great New Orleans piano masters, including Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, and Professor Longhair. This is good time music that will leave you with a smile on your face!
Cost of admission to this show is $10 and can be purchased at the door. Doors open at 7pm. Music will begin at 8:30pm. Please bring your own food and beverages. |

Black Box Owner Expanding Improv Into The Business World
Since July 2012, the Black Box Improv Theater in downtown Dayton has been providing audiences the most unique form of entertainment each Thursday-Saturday night. As for the improvisers themselves, performing at the prestigious Del Close Marathon in New York City at the famed Upright Citizens Brigade Theater has allowed them to take their honorable place within the improv community nationally. The success of the theater is due to the incredible dedication from owner Justin Howard.
With a resume that includes studying at the iO theater in Chicago and the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City, Howard has become sought after in the outside world. For example, Howard was a featured speaker at the inaugural TEDx talks in Dayton and has been invited back each year to participate in the annual event; most recently putting on an improvised musical with other Black Box improvisers. Howard was looked to by Harvard Business School; teaching improv workshops to MBA students on their campus.
Howard’s skills in business, communication, and of course improv performance have now allowed him to officially launch Black Box Consulting, a division of The Black Box Theater. “”We’ve been offering workshops since we opened the doors in 2012,” Howard states. “But now we’re offering a full menu of programs for businesses to benefit from, and we wanted an online presence dedicated to those services.”
With Black Box Consulting, Howard offers workshops and improvisational training for every aspect. The courses will be tailored for a specific department or applied to staff cross-sections for maximum collaborative impact. By employing improv within their daily tasks, employees will work together more effectively, communicate clearly, think on their feet more quickly, and ultimately improve the bottom line.
Businesses interested in engaging Howard and his team for organizational training should contact Howard directly on the new site outsideblackbox.com.

‘Steel Magnolias’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Salon Sisterhood
Those immensely engaging ladies of Truvy’s Beauty Shop tug the heart and tickle the funny bone as evidenced in the Human Race Theatre Company’s excellent production of Robert Harling’s touching 1987 comedy “Steel Magnolias,” the third presentation of the play the Race has produced in 26 years.
The gossipy chit-chat flows effortlessly and with great charm in this quaint, relatable tale set in Chinquapin, Louisiana over the course of two years concerning friendship, family, loyalty, illness, and the innate bonds of sisterhood. It’s hard to completely erase memories of the play’s 1989 film starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton among others, but director Heather N. Powell, in her mainstage Race debut, creates many winning moments of original authenticity sprinkled with bright and breezy comedy while accented by compelling tenderness and sincerity, particularly in the sentimental Act 2. Sure, there is a lot of fun to be had in the peppier Act 1, but Harling’s script shines when attention focuses on the hardships women face and aspire to endure. “I’d rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special,” says Shelby, a young woman who sacrifices her health for the chance to become a mother. Shelby’s decision to give the gift of life is pivotal, but reiterates her greater desire as a woman to leave an indelible legacy on her own accord in spite of difficulty and the concerns of others.
Clothed in colorful, humorous ‘80s garb by Janet G. Powell and framed within scenic designer Eric Moore’s terrific and spacious era-appropriate set, Powell’s close-knit cast of six is a balanced mix of Race artists and newcomers. As bubbly Truvy, Christine Brunner, so grounded and loving, is a fantastic source of encouragement, support and sass. Maretta Zilic strikingly evolves from timidity to confidence as Truvy’s assistant Annelle, a young woman with a mysterious past who ultimately finds her purpose in religion. Julia Geisler brings endearing sweetness and believably weary undercurrents to her very appealing portrayal of Shelby. Carolyn Popp, as Shelby’s devoted mother M’Lynn, will have you completely teary-eyed in her passionate late Act 2 monologue detailing M’Lynn’s fury and pain from experiencing great loss. Patricia Linhart, chipper and affectionate, is lighthearted and sophisticated as former mayor’s wife Clairee. Caitlin Larsen, one of the finest chameleon actresses in the region, commands attention with hilariously earthy gusto as the hopelessly perturbed Ouiser, Clairee’s bickering buddy.
“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” says Truvy. As Harling’s heartfelt exploration of mothers and children as well as wives and husbands transpires at the Race, in a production astute enough to be emotionally sound without resorting to melodrama, it is clear how viable this story and its characters remain. After nearly 30 years these Southern Belles still impress with delicately resilient finesse.
“Steel Magnolias” continues through Nov. 29 in the Loft Theatre of the Metropolitan Arts Center, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. Nov. 11-14, 18-20, and 27-28; 2 p.m. Nov. 15, 22, 28-29; 7 p.m. Nov. 10, 17, 24-25. Act One: 75 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Tickets are $35-$50 for adults, $32-$46 for seniors, and $17.50-$25 for students. Prices vary depending on performance date. Select side-area seats available for $25 at all performances. For tickets or more information, call (937) 228-3630 or visit www.humanracetheatre.org or ticketcenterstage.com. Group sales: Contact Betty Gould at (937) 461-8295 or [email protected]

How To Coach Change
I’ve been thinking a lot about change lately because when you boil my job down to its essence that’s really what I’m supposed to help people do. They come to me because they want to feel better–physically and emotionally–and usually what they think they’re going to get by hiring a coach is a prescription. Eat this. Lift that. Don’t eat this. Don’t do that.
Instead I ask questions like:
“Why are you here?”
“What has your best experience with fitness been?”
“What do you value?”
I never get around to prescribing a diet of any sort. And rather than yelling or cajoling the way a celebrity trainer on The Biggest Loser might, I constantly remind them of their already demonstrated capacity for greatness.
Am I just a big softy? No, not really. It’s just that I’ve learned a thing or two about change. Believe it or not, we know a lot about human behavior, what allows people to change, and how to develop sustainability. The name for my coaching approach is motivational interviewing, and the technique grew out of psychologists’ work with addiction. The most important aspects of motivational interviewing in the context of fitness are empathy from me and a client-centered approach that assumes varying levels of readiness to change.
How does this play out in practice? Someone who’s resistant to change might hate going to the gym. So in talking to that person about their goals, I might develop with them a weekly goal to put together their gym clothes the evening before a work day. And…
And that’s it. That’s the goal. Simply put your gym clothes in a place where you can see them. Prepare gym shoes, clothes, and bag as if you’re going to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Demonstrate to yourself that you can do this, experience victory, and create a habit around fitness.
Next week’s goals might be putting those clothes on.
And the week after that the goal might be getting to the gym.
If you’re counting at home, that took about three weeks to get the person who hates the gym to get into the gym. Slow? Yes. Deliberative? Sure. Effective?
Absolutely.
By demonstrating empathy with this person and recognizing their readiness to change, I didn’t front load their fitness with things that they cannot do. I met this person where she was and built success into her program.
I do versions of this deliberative process with clients every week. For some people we work together to develop a goal around reading about fitness. For others we make a goal about grocery shopping. The goals vary from person to person–which is why prescriptions in fitness aren’t often the best way to coach change. The cool thing about this process is that you can do the very same thing for yourself!
Think about a change you’ve been wanting to make. Maybe you’re eating too much fast food. But if you say to yourself, “stop eating fast food,” you’ve set yourself up for failure.
Instead, think about why you eat fast food when you do, and develop an incremental strategy for eliminating it from your diet. Hint: Usually one of the first steps toward eliminating fast food from one’s diet is learning how to shop at the grocery store. With that in mind, maybe your goal for the week might be to think about your schedule for the week and to make a grocery list. That’s step one. Step two for next week might be to make a grocery list and actually go to the grocery store. Step three might be list, grocery shopping, and trying ONE new recipe. The key is you can’t judge yourself (“why can’t I just stop eating fast food?”) and you have to acknowledge your own reticence to change. Change is hard, remember? So acknowledge that.
Not everyone can afford to hire a coach, but everyone can learn to practice more empathy and to troubleshoot their least healthy behaviors. There’s no need to wait until New Year’s resolution season.

New Downtown Dining Option: Marilyn’s Grill
Soul Food at Its Finest, Comfort Food at its Best, The Taste will past your Test!
Marilyn’s Grill has set the bar high with their description of their business on their Facebook page. Albert Smith and partner Lolita Frazier signed a lease last March for the first floor restaurant space at the Barclay Building on the corner of Main and First Street. They’ve spent months refreshing the interior of the place and are finally ready to reveal their plans to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Smith shared, “on Gettysburg we were known as a comfort food establishment. Downtown at this location we’re going to continue to carry that image, but we’ve also added a lot of lighter and healthier meals with a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options.
This week Marilyn’s Grill will be offering lunch on the sidewalk and next week the “soft opening” will start with breakfast Nov 16, and the restaurant will add lunch Nov. 18 and dinner Nov. 20.
