July Has Been Spectacular at THE NEON + More Great News!

Hello Everyone,

This is another short & easy newsletter. We had great attendance again over the weekend. TO ROME WITH LOVE and MOONRISE KINGDOM continue to draw crowds. Thank you so much for your support of these films. (You can visit either official site by clicking the titles above.)

We are holding steady for another week!

We go on a week-to-week basis with all of our films.  These current hits (along with our recent engagement of BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) have performed better than any other films for quite some time…so we’re holding them over.  As soon as possible, we’ll get to BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and THE INTOUCHABLES.  (Sometimes dates move at our request…and sometimes distributors move dates around.)

Next week, I will have firm details regarding the August 5 screening of THE INVISIBLE WAR.

Very soon, I’ll be able to give you details about our benefit on October 14…slowly but surely, we’re getting details in place so we can make a big announcement (here are a couple wonderful details – Meadowlark and Coco’s Bistro have already confirmed to provide appetizers). This benefit will help us as we transition from 35mm to digital projection.  (The picture at the top of this newsletter is a big hint as to what we’ll be screening.)

Did you see that FilmDayton revealed their line-up for their 4th Annual Festival? Check out their site to see the latest. This fest is set for August 24-26, and I can’t wait to see COMPLIANCE.

And speaking of festivals, The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival committee last night in order to solidify this year’s line-up. The 7th Annual Fest is set for Sept. 28-30, and the films are spectacular!   Once everything is confirmed, we’ll release the line-up.  (Please contact me if you or your business might be interested in sponsoring this annual event.)

2 Great Films, Another Great Weekend at THE NEON!

This is a short & easy newsletter this week. We had another incredible weekend at THE NEON. People are really liking Woody Allen’s latest film – TO ROME WITH LOVE (some people have been quite vocal about their disgust for the review that appeared in Dayton Daily…and some have said they like the film as much as MIDNIGHT IN PARIS). Best Week Ever + TO ROME WITH LOVE at THE NEON!

Wow! What a fantastic week!! Thank you to everyone who has come out and supported us over the hot, stormy week and weekend. It has been our absolute best ever!! (2nd place now goes to our opening of MILK while SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was playing in our other auditorium.)

I’m sad to say it, but THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL and HYSTERIA are on their way out. On Friday, we will open the latest from Woody Allen – TO ROME WITH LOVE. Allen’s last film – MIDNIGHT IN PARIS – was our longest running film last year (13 weeks)…we’re anxious to see how this new film performs.
And it goes without saying that we will hold the delightful and crowd-pleasing MOONRISE KINGDOM.

Magical MOONRISE KINGDOM Starts Friday at THE NEON!

Our plans have changed for this weekend. In an unusual turn of events, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL experienced a major upswing in attendance this past weekend…so we’re going to hold it (along with one daily screening of HYSTERIA) for one more week. That said, on our other screen, we will still open my favorite film of the year – the charming, magical, and beautiful MOONRISE KINGDOM.
(Woody Allen’s latest – TO ROME WITH LOVE – is slated to open July 6.)

Synopsis for MOONRISE KINGDOM: “Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, the film follows a young boy and girl falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing.” (taken from Focus Features) This new film from Wes Anderson has an incredible cast including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and more.  Visit the official site – it’s a really fun!

Don’t forget about our special screening of VITO on Thursday evening. The local press has been great, and the movie screens Thursday, June 28 at 7:30. Tickets are still available for $8 each. Professor Charles Derry will introduce VITO on Thursday evening. It was in his class at WSU where I was first introduced to Russo’s pinnacle book THE CELLULOID CLOSET. Don’t miss this chance to see a great film introduced by my favorite professor.

2 Crowd-Pleasers, 1 More Week + Special Screening at THE NEON

New Comedy HYSTERIA Opens Friday!

Hello Everyone,

We had to change our plans for this Friday. Though I know many of you are anxious to see THE INTOUCHABLES, The Weinstein Company changed their plans and decided not to open the film in Dayton this weekend. We will eventually play the film, but an alternate date has not been determined.
Instead, we will open a new comedy with a great cast. It’s an English period piece set in the late 19th century…about the invention of the vibrator. Though HYSTERIA sounds like it could be tawdry material, it’s actually one of the most delightful comedies I’ve seen in quite some time.
If you still need to see THE KID WITH A BIKE, you’ll need to hurry down. This incredible film will only play through Thursday. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL will stick around for another week.

Cinematic Gem – THE KID WITH A BIKE – Starts Friday

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL continues to be a hit at THE NEON. Unfortunately, SOUND OF MY VOICE underperformed this weekend. If you still need to see this new thriller, hurry down. Thursday will be its last day. Because VOICE is leaving so quickly, we now have room on our schedule to bring a cinematic gem to town…but only for one week! THE KID WITH A BIKE, the new film from the Dardenne Brothers, is one of the last films from my list of favorites at last year’s Toronto International Film Fest. (It was right at the top with THE DESCENDANTS and THE ARTIST.) Numerous critics have given the film a 100% rating – The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly & more! SOUND OF MY VOICE Opens Friday + Great NEON News

Hello Everyone,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Opening weekend of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL was terrific…thanks to everyone who came out to see it. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally quite good for us…but this was our best ever! Audiences are loving the film, and there have been several rounds of applause after screenings over the past few days. In addition, I appreciate the fact that many of you voted for THE NEON as “Best Movie Theater.” Though we didn’t end up in first place, I’m not distraught. We only do about 5% of the business of the multiplexes, and I’m terribly grateful that so many of you jumped at the chance to vote for us.

WSU’s BIG LENS – a showcase of the latest films from WSU’s Motion Picture Department – is set for next Thursday, and tickets are available at our box office for just $7 each. MARIGOLD HOTEL, Vote NEON & More

Hello Everyone,

We’ve got 2 new movies opening this Friday (+ 1 holdover)…but we also need your help. First, let’s talk movies.

In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned that we have received more phone calls, e-mails and customer questions about THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL than any film in recent memory. Well it’s finally coming to town, and we hope you’re making plans to see it soon. This little British import (though shot mostly in India) has been a huge hit in larger markets, and we’re hoping it’s a hit for us, too.

In addition to MARIGOLD HOTEL, we’re opening a little film that we don’t anticipate sticking around too long. DARLING COMPANION – starring Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline – was directed by Lawrence Kasdan (THE BIG CHILL, GRAND CANYON). Hurry down if you want to catch this one.

Though MARLEY only performed moderately well, we’re going to hold onto it for one screening a day for one more week. When the film opened on Friday, the enthusiasm and energy was tremendous. Special thanks to M Hunter for his wonderful music on the patio, Elizabeth Gorman for her help in building the needed community ties, and to all of you who came out on that beautiful night. It was fantastic!

Bob MARLEY Documentary Opens Friday!

Over the past several weeks, numerous people have asked if we were going to play MARLEY – the new documentary about the brilliant musician Bob Marley. On Friday, it will finally arrive.

Oscar-Nominated FOOTNOTE Opens Friday

On Friday, we finally get to open the Oscar-nominated film FOOTNOTE. If you’ve been to THE NEON in the past couple months, I’m almost certain you’ve seen the trailer for this film that has received critical accolades from around the world.

If you still need to see JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, it only plays through Thursday. JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME and DAMSELS IN DISTRESS will play for another week. For remaining showtimes for this week, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Because of limited print availability, our upcoming schedule has moved around quite a bit. In addition, we’ve added some new, great titles (see the entire line-up below). On Friday, May 18, we will open the new documentary MARLEY – the definitive life story of the brilliant musician and political/social prophet Bob Marley. In celebration of this film, we will have live music on our patio – provided by Reggae musician M. Hunter of Columbus – starting at 6pm on May 18. We hope you’ll plan to join us. JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI Opens Friday at THE NEON

Audiences are certainly talking about KEVIN. After almost every screening of WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, members of the audience have stuck around to talk about the film. Though dark and unsettling, this smart and masterful film will stick with you…and discussing it makes the experience even stronger. We’re going to hold it, along with JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME, for one more week. In addition, we will open a new documentary that has garnered quite a fan-base since it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last spring – JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI. This is the first documentary of 2012 to gross over a million dollars. That’s a rarity for documentaries…and a sign that audiences are loving it!

Synopsis for JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI: “Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the story of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. “We Need To Talk About Kevin” Opens Friday at THE NEON!

Tilda Swinton was robbed!  One of the most disappointing omissions from this year’s Oscar nominations was Swinton’s performance in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN.
After several months of playing the trailer, a print is available and we’re finally able to open this chilling, masterfully crafted film.
In addition to opening KEVIN, we will hold JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME (which had a fantastic weekend) and one screening per day of THE RAID: REDEMPTION.

Synopsis for WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN: “We Need to Talk About Kevin explores the factious relationship between a mother and her evil son. Tilda Swinton plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin. I ran into a NEON regular at Meadowlark last week (you’ve been to their new, wonderful location, right?). He said, “Movies are comin’ and goin’ pretty quickly these days.” My response was simple. “That’s not a good sign.” When movies come and go, that means they’re not performing well…and that’s not to say that they aren’t great films. The response to both PARIAH and IN DARKNESS has been incredible, and numerous people have also loved SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN. However, all 3 films have to go. Tomorrow (Thursday, April 12) will be your last chance to see these films at THE NEON. On Friday, we will start two new, very different films – JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME and THE RAID: REDEMPTION. Synopsis for JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME: “On his way to the store to buy wood glue, Jeff looks for signs from the universe to determine his path. However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. Synopsis for THE RAID: REDEMPTION: “A Swat team arrives at a rundown apartment block with a mission to remove its owner, a notorious drug lord named Tama. The building has never been raided before, never been touched by police. Seen as a no go zone it has since become a sanctuary to killers, gangs, rapists and thieves seeking accommodation in the one place they know they cannot be touched. Making their move in the break of dawn the swat team work their way up the building under cover of silence. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and with news of their assault traveling to Tama in his penthouse suite the building is locked down with all lights out and all exits blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor the swat team must fight their way through every floor and every room not just to complete their mission but to survive.” (taken from Merantau Films) Many people who have seen the trailer say that this film doesn’t seem like our traditional fare…and I agree. That said, the movie is a foreign genre film with great reviews. Though the violence will turn some of you off, we hoping that fans of stylized action films find their way to us.

On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30, we have a special treat for lovers of documentaries and vintage aircraft. “Each year the famous Doolittle Tokyo Raiders from WWII have a reunion to remember their mission, their comrades, and their heroic leader Gen. James Doolittle. In 2010, an extraordinary event took place – seventeen B-25 bomber crews volunteered to gather in honor of the Raiders, and over 70,000 people turned up to witness it. THE RESTORERS – THEY WERE ALL VOLUNTEERS follows the journey of a Minnesota B-25 named Miss Mitchell. Join this restored bomber as she travels to Dayton, Ohio to attend the largest B-25 gathering since WWII. Help us commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic Doolittle mission. The filmmakers and participants will be on-hand for discussion and questions. Cost: $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for children and veterans.” (synopsis provided by Adam White)

On Thursday, April 19 at 7:30, we have a newly added special event for you. “OBSCURA is the new short film by writer/director and Wright State University Motion Picture graduate Chris Stevens. Filmed in the great state of Ohio with the accomplished and fellow Wright State graduate Mike King behind the camera, OBSCURA tells the story of Mike, Holly and Logan who are just your average family until a disaster leaves their world in darkness. Unknowing the origin of the mysterious disaster they decide to leave their home in search of answers and safety. Wandering in darkness their circumstance begins to wear them down. As trust and their faith in one another fades, so too does the chance they will ever find their answers as a family. A short Q&A will follow the screening. PARIAH Starts Friday at THE NEON (One Week Only)!

Hello Everyone,

Though neither SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN nor IN DARKNESS were big hits for us, they both performed well enough to stick around for one more week. (Interestingly, both films have received rave reviews from our NEON regulars.) On Friday, we’re going to add one new title into the mix – a film about a young African American woman coming-of-age in Brooklyn. PARIAH has received perfect reviews from numerous critics, and Meryl Streep even acknowledged lead actress Adepero Oduye during her acceptance speech at this year’s Golden Globes (this was big news for Oduye – as she was the only name mentioned by Streep who wasn’t nominated for the award).

Synopsis for PARIAH: “Adepero Oduye portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur and younger sister Sharonda in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura, Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion.
