‘Oh My God….there are actually 4 seats at the bar!’ The voice rings out in the room filled with red leather rolling chairs, a cast of regulars, and a beloved bartender, Grace. ‘It’s really like finding a treasure!’ says the lady before plopping down with her husband and another thankful couple.
If you know Treasure Island Supper Club, tucked ever-so humbly at 4250 Chief Woods Lane in Moraine, you know seats at the bar are a premium. And be aware, there are folks who know those seats quite well, and have sat in them for decades!
The storied restaurant, known for its nautical decor, is having a moment….or perhaps it always has. Stepping into the space is the perfect blend of ‘what was’ and ‘what is’…and, oh, the sunken bar, still sought by ‘never-been-theres!’ That bar always brings a smile! ‘That’s amazing!’ Said one recent friend of mine, a virgin to TI. ‘I can’t believe I have never set foot in this place.’ he goes on…and it is hard to believe for someone who has roots in Dayton for over 40 years now. People don’t know what they are missing.
We sit, and Grace (aka Gracie), who too many is the face of Treasure Island, quickly grabs us a cocktail and sets down a menu. I have seen it 1000 times, but for some reason, I still have to remind myself, look to the right for the daily specials. As I am perusing the night’s food choices, all sounding yummy,
my Maker’s and soda comes…and it’s a right-sized cocktail! (Thank You TI!)
I have favorites at Treasure Island. I think the pickerel on Tuesday always hits the mark; Monday’s broasted chicken is some of the best and I have never had a salad there I didn’t like. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what many hold near and dear…the CRACKER BASKET, with BUTTER! Talk about indulgence. For many of my closest friends, Treasure Island is a ‘go-to’ because you can rest assured you won’t leave hungry! To-Go boxes are plentiful at TI!
If the bar is packed, and it usually is, the dining room and it’s ornate tables, is a great place to chew and chat. The waitresses, who folks know and love, are fun-loving, know the menu and are not afraid to make suggestions (which is helpful!). They love a joke, a story or just a ‘It’s good to see you.’ Eat there twice, and believe me, you will feel that ‘belonging’ many folks speak of.
I’ve been coming to TI since I first taught school just down the street off of Dryden. After-school, we would head there for a quick cocktail and it has always been consistent….consistently satisfying!
Dayton has a love of supper clubs…think about it! Oakwood Club, Pine Club, Paragon, etc….and each of them has their own air, their own atmosphere. Treasure Island has exactly what it needs! Great food, super service, cocktails of size and LOYAL guests. That’s GOLD!
I, like many, don’t want the secret of Treasure Island getting out…it’s one of the best-kept in the area. But, truth be told, Treasure Island is one that needs to be shared. They deserve the praise they receive (see their Facebook Reviews) and the devoted fans who have shown up for decades. Go, discover the GEM that is Treasure Island!

“Packed.” “Amazing.” “So Good To See Everyone Out and About!” “Incredible!” You’ve been hearing the accolades all week about ‘Hamilton!…but these remarks are from the business owners in the Dayton Area!

Kids will love the Holidaze as it never really slows down, and when it does, the bass filled music never lets us ‘rest’ long enough to take a breath. (Intermission is short, so grab that wine, pronto!) The show starts on-time and stays on-time, for parents. that’s a great thing to know.
all leave with the proverbial ‘I wonder how they did that?’
Grab that Ho-Ho-Mojito, a pack of pretzels and settle in at the PNC Arts Annex for a little Christmas Cheer. From the moment it kicks off with a jazzed-up version of ‘This Christmas,’ we are reminded that the HOLIDAYS are back! No more bah-humbug, isolation or streaming television necessary. It’s live and it’s lively. That alone is something to sing about!

The big box stores have a huge advantage over the little guy….but where they run off the rails is in promoting ethical practices! Enter Grace Lane Boutique, a shop solely cemented in the idea that sales can serve the greater good. “It all started for me with the Bangladesh garment factory collapse in 2013. Many favorite brands of folks were made there…and on that day 1200 people died. I was like, what in the world are we doing?” said Danielle Goodman, the store’s proprietor. “I don’t think people realize what they are supporting when they buy certain brands, but we can do better!” And better is the name of the game at Grace Lane. Cozy, comfortable and a sense of peaceful shopping await in her 2 locations. (133 East 4th Street in Dayton & 4395 Holly Dr. at the Greene.)
The store is warm and the lighting suggests more than an in and out kind of experience. Each bar of soap, pair of socks or candle has a connection to ‘do the right thing’ in society. “I try to keep my eye on products that make a difference. Human trafficking, ethical sourcing, fair trade and fair treatment of women really resonate with me. It matters.” And with that, the brands are top notch and LOCAL! Dault Pottery (Bellbrook), Jill’s Jewelry (Clayton) and 11th Candle Company (Columbus) are just a few of the vendors represented. “Conscious Step Socks are all about doing better for the world. They are a top seller in my store. People want to do the right thing and support companies who support people.” One more vendor of note is Thistle Farms, a Tennessee company that uses it sales to help women with addiction, find them jobs and provide counseling. It is located in Nashville. Their theme is Healing, Hope & Freedom for Women Survivors. https://thistlefarms.org.

The Bar and Bistro, which will have a Happy Hour from 4-7pm (closing at 10pm), will also feature some signature cocktails, including the ‘Stacked’ Paloma (Tequila, Mexican Ginger Ale, Jarritos and Fresh Lime juice) and the Dayton Rubi (Grey Goose, Prosecco, St. Germaine and Cranberry Juice). The Bar and Bistro will begin it’s soft-opening around 11/8.

We are living in a most unusual time. There seems to be a desire to silence the voices of Americans…on all sides. To have the discussions necessary, I m fortunate enough to teach a class at Wright State University this year known as ED2100:Education in a Democracy. The topic seems so simple. The idea of educating people to understand our Democracy and the importance of their individual voice is fundamental….or is it?
From these lyrics, conversation…and here is a sampling of what is on their minds:

There is no doubt that when a person signs a contract of employment, they have standards to live by. There is also no doubt, that a standard, like public opinion, can change over time. As we evolve, rules must be ALTERed….or we would still be hunting witches in Salem.
