The Renaissance of a ‘Treasure’ Trove!

March 4, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

‘Oh My God….there are actually 4 seats at the bar!’ The voice rings out in the room filled with red leather rolling chairs, a cast of regulars, and a beloved bartender, Grace. ‘It’s really like finding a treasure!’ says the lady before plopping down with her husband and another thankful couple.
If you know Treasure Island Supper Club, tucked ever-so humbly at 4250 Chief Woods Lane in Moraine, you know seats at the bar are a premium. And be aware, there are folks who know those seats quite well, and have sat in them for decades!

The storied restaurant, known for its nautical decor, is having a moment….or perhaps it always has. Stepping into the space is the perfect blend of ‘what was’ and ‘what is’…and, oh, the sunken bar, still sought by ‘never-been-theres!’ That bar always brings a smile! ‘That’s amazing!’ Said one recent friend of mine, a virgin to TI. ‘I can’t believe I have never set foot in this place.’ he goes on…and it is hard to believe for someone who has roots in Dayton for over 40 years now. People don’t know what they are missing.

We sit, and Grace (aka Gracie), who too many is the face of Treasure Island, quickly grabs us a cocktail and sets down a menu. I have seen it 1000 times, but for some reason, I still have to remind myself, look to the right for the daily specials. As I am perusing the night’s food choices, all sounding yummy,

my Maker’s and soda comes…and it’s a right-sized cocktail! (Thank You TI!)

I have favorites at Treasure Island. I think the pickerel on Tuesday always hits the mark; Monday’s broasted chicken is some of the best and I have never had a salad there I didn’t like. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what many hold near and dear…the CRACKER BASKET, with BUTTER! Talk about indulgence. For many of my closest friends, Treasure Island is a ‘go-to’ because you can rest assured you won’t leave hungry! To-Go boxes are plentiful at TI!

If the bar is packed, and it usually is, the dining room and it’s ornate tables, is a great place to chew and chat. The waitresses, who folks know and love, are fun-loving, know the menu and are not afraid to make suggestions (which is helpful!). They love a joke, a story or just a ‘It’s good to see you.’ Eat there twice, and believe me, you will feel that ‘belonging’ many folks speak of.
I’ve been coming to TI since I first taught school just down the street off of Dryden. After-school, we would head there for a quick cocktail and it has always been consistent….consistently satisfying!

Dayton has a love of supper clubs…think about it! Oakwood Club, Pine Club, Paragon, etc….and each of them has their own air, their own atmosphere. Treasure Island has exactly what it needs! Great food, super service, cocktails of size and LOYAL guests. That’s GOLD!

I, like many, don’t want the secret of Treasure Island getting out…it’s one of the best-kept in the area. But, truth be told, Treasure Island is one that needs to be shared. They deserve the praise they receive (see their Facebook Reviews) and the devoted fans who have shown up for decades. Go, discover the GEM that is Treasure Island!

Banquets and Parties Welcome.
They are Closed on Sundays.

THANK YOU for the HAMILTONS, ‘Hamilton!’

January 29, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

“Packed.” “Amazing.”  “So Good To See Everyone Out and About!” “Incredible!”  You’ve been hearing the accolades all week about ‘Hamilton!…but these remarks are from the business owners in the Dayton Area!

‘Hamilton’ is in town, and along with it comes a revived atmosphere in restaurants, bars and businesses in the downtown area. It has been a blessing for sure. The show, on it’s own, ground-breaking, eye-opening and pleasing to the throngs, carries with it large, sold-out crowds that rediscover out little city…lying in wait after a long 2 years!

To double-down, it was also restaurant week, which pushed some Daytonians to reach out to RESY and OPEN TABLE, something people haven’t relied on in months. And it’s a great problem to have.

Interestingly, the success of ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway lacks by comparison to the ‘Hamilton’ traveling the country! “One of the two touring productions of ‘Hamilton’ made $3,967,400 over its final eight performances in Pittsburgh. It made $4,309,027 during the previous week, which is more money than the record-breaking show has ever made during a week on Broadway.” reported M. Hershberg for Forbes magazine in ’19.
Dayton is no exception as people scramble to find a ticket or two to the show.

What’s more exciting is what it does for season ticket sales for local theaters like Dayton Live. With ‘Hamilton’ in-tow, season tickets sales can go 5% t0 30% higher….a true boon for theaters.

And, all that being said…it’ just great theater! What we can learn about Democracy, and how ‘diametric’ly opposed, foes’ can look beyond what divides us and find compromise and kindness.

Dinner, theater, life lessons and a city so excited to welcome back its life-blood….sounds like ‘Hamilton’ is just what we needed!

Hamilton is playing at the Mead Theater in the Schuster Performing Arts Center, 1 West 2nd St, Dayton.

Theater Brings Hope, Happiness and Healing to A COVID Weary World.

January 22, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

For my husband and I, it was a trip to Columbus to see CATS (not a personal favorite, but wanted to see a real show) that made me realize the need we all have for live performance. Watching the quintessential ‘MEMORY’ belted with sheer perfection by Tayler Harris (Taylerharris.com) as Grizabella, something came over me….true tears streaming down my face! I MISSED THIS! We all missed real people, doing real songs on a real stage. No streaming necessary. From that moment, I thought, ‘How Do Our Resident Dayton Artists Explain this Visceral Response People are Having to Seeing Theater Again?‘

And I gathered a stellar cast….PHILIP DRENNEN, TINA MCPHERSON,  BRIAN SHARP, JAMIE PAVLOFSKY & KEVIN MOORE.

(Note: The interview questions are answered by corresponding initials of each respondent.)

Why do you feel that people are having such an emotional response to theater’s return, not only in NYC, but around the world?

Tina McPherson

PD: The escape that we enjoy in theater was stripped from us. There is a resilience to theater and the people who participate in it.  When we were not available to perform, or to be with each other, it hurt!

KM: Theater is LIFE-SIZED! Theater is living and breathing. Being detached from that live performance is not only disappointing, it’s a punch to the GUT. To work hard and then see COVID have us postpone or close again, it created such anxiety.

JP: People react with that depth because there is nothing like a performance right before your eyes.

BS: I think for some people arts are a vital part of their lives and purpose. Seeing it open again is energizing.

Almost daily, FACEBOOK and IG feature stories of understudies and swings jumping in to save shows affected by COVID. Can you relate to the sentiment of these ‘HEROES?’

Kevin Moore (& Scott Stoney)

TM: They are extremely talented and driven, the hardest working people in show business. They might cover between 3-8 roles and get called upon within an hour’s notice.

BS: In the MUSIC MAN, the understudy was given 4 hours to learn all she had been studying (blocking, choreography, etc…) and did it without missing a beat. Not only is that quite an accomplishment for the actor but it also puts the rest of the cast at ease knowing the show goes on as expected.

KM: I’ve been that person….one time, we had an actor with a debilitating migraine and Scott Stoney and I split up the part between the dancing and the dialog! And in a touring West Side Story, as an understudy, I was called up for two roles.

PD: …and it’s a ton of work, I am going in to a role for my most recent show as an understudy. It is what we do to ensure things work!

Local theater has faced many challenges during the Pandemic. What do you say to ‘hungry audiences’ ready to return to see shows?

PD: Even before the pandemic, safety is always at the forefront of what we do in the theater. Still is.

KM: Everyone just needs to find their level of comfort. Obviously, we are hopeful everyone is vaccinated, boosted, masked….we all must be responsible during this time.

Brian Sharp

BS: …and please come see the shows. Send a donation, buy a ticket, buy a gift certificate. Tell your friends! We need the audience. Small, local arts organizations have suffered significantly financially.

JP: We can’t wait to see you….grab a mask and spend a few hours with us!

What show in particular would you love to see in-person as a tribute to a return to live theater?

PD: BEAUTIFUL. I really want to see the Carole King musical as a friend of mine is in the production.

KM: DEAR EVEN HANSEN. I have tried to see this show a few times, on Broadway, off-Broadway…now it’s coming to the Schuster and I won’t be here! I know the powerful story. It’s just nagging at me that I have not seen it live.

JP: SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, since we recently lost Sondheim. RAGTIME, for its timely message. ON THE

Jamie Pavlofsky

TOWN since it is a love letter to NYC.

BS: In NYC, I’m dying to see MUSIC MAN. I want to see COMPANY. I need to feel the crowd and the excitement of BROADWAY. It gives me energy to bring home…and locally I want to see all that I can!

TM: I am happy to see ANY show being produced in these extraordinary times. I will say that is the bigger challenge to a theater when you have a large cast. There is more opportunity for people to become ill, so safety is, again, the top priority!

Finally, Dayton is alive with the Arts! Why do you feel other places around the country look at Dayton as a ‘Beacon of Light’ for the performing arts?

TM: When I worked at Dayton Live, I remember casts would come from all over the place to our little town and say ‘all my friends say you haven’t lived until you’ve played Dayton!’ It’s true. We are a welcoming, creative community.

Philip Drennen

PD: I think it’s because we start young in Dayton. Muse Machine, area school programs, youth theaters…So many opportunities for kids!

JP: I think we have a spirit that attracts artists to come and be with us so they can soak up the great energy we have in Dayton!

BS: We can thank Kettering and Patterson for believing that having a strong arts community would attract the right executives and their families to the arts organizations!  It has long been said (and true) that Dayton has more theater than Cincinnati and Columbus combined.

KM: It’s ‘In The Water.’ Seriously. We are where five rivers meet and with that comes an incredible energy. Home to inventions, patents, creativity….there is an openness here, and acceptance of creative people. Edgar Casey said ‘Dayton is a Karma Center.’ It has

a natural energy…and I believe it!

A huge thank you to our resident theater folks….and now,  let’s all get back to the theater…so that, as Grizabella reminds us….we can ‘Let the Memory LIVE AGAIN!’

Cirque’s Pleasant ‘Dream’, A Holiday High Point.

December 22, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Nutcrackers, dancers, snow and songs. Sounds like a typical holiday event, but Cirque Dreams Holiday at the Victoria is anything but standard fare. We all have become familiar with the Cirque brand….acrobats, magicians, oddities….and they’ve arrived en force in Dayton! The 90-minute show, in 2 Acts, moves quickly, with some stunning ‘sideshow’ style moments  and solid aerobatic performances. Set to a loosely based ‘Nutcracker’ theme, the background highlights larger than life props, and chorus characters dressed in candy-striped sweetness.

One of the best parts of the show is watching and listening to those folks in the audience….kids with their mouths agape as a lady wrapped in cloth, suspended from the ceiling, seems to lose control in a quick roll to earth, only to stop just short of her demise. Loud claps, and uneasy ‘phews’ fill the space. Adults. watching in semi-horror as a contortionist twists 6 ways from Sunday, muttering ‘ewwws’ and ‘ouches!’ And, of course, the occasional, ‘Oh brother…’ when the tongue-in-cheek cheesy moments hit the stage. (There are a few!)

The dangling rope artist is exceptional, the hula-hooper is spectacular and the King and Queen Sugar Plum are the climax in terms of awe-factor! But, for me, and oddly, it was the high-spirited jumprope artists that made the impression. Smiling, without fail, and getting the audience into a clapping frenzy, the jumpers appear to hit 60mph, and it was just plain fun! The lady behind me saying ‘I’d have a heart attack doing that, but it looks so invigorating!’…..ummmm, don’t try that at home!

Kids will love the Holidaze as it never really slows down, and when it does, the bass filled music never lets us ‘rest’ long enough to take a breath. (Intermission is short, so grab that wine, pronto!) The show starts on-time and stays on-time, for parents. that’s a great thing to know.

The only real drawback to Holidaze is the story itself. We get moments of narration, and insights into what Clara wants for Christmas, but honestly, it’s not necessary and makes little sense. At one point, Clara gets her chance in the air, and you are left wondering, ‘Did Clara ask to be catapulted for Christmas?’

All that aside, it’s good, clean fun. The magician does his level best to engage the audience in a second act ‘sing-along’ and the ‘narrator’ stays the course by crooning some holiday hits. You’ll enjoy it….your kids will love it….and you will all leave with the proverbial ‘I wonder how they did that?’

Cirque Dream Holidaze is at the Victoria Theater 12/21- 12/26.

Tickets range from $35-$85.

‘Season’s Greetings’ satisfies the Ho-Ho-Humbugs!

December 11, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Grab that Ho-Ho-Mojito, a pack of pretzels and settle in at the PNC Arts Annex for a little Christmas Cheer.  From the moment it kicks off with a jazzed-up version of ‘This Christmas,’  we are reminded that the HOLIDAYS are back! No more bah-humbug, isolation or streaming television necessary. It’s live and it’s lively. That alone is something to sing about!

Philip Drennen and Gina Handy provide an energetic  3-act  Christmas show, backed up by Deron Bell and his Merry-Makers. Each song, though familiar, seems to take on a live of its own when the band infuses jazz, swing and…yep…FUNK! There are some truly memorable moments in the set. ‘It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas’ takes on a smooth almost etherial tone. ‘The Christmas Song’ gives you a somber start, but an uplifting finish. And for the purest, Handy nails ‘Merry Christmas, Darling.’  The one you will leave loving is ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside.’ It’s fun, silly and timely!

Centered in the audience is a mailbox, where requests are taken, and performed during the 2nd and 3rd act. This makes for some fun chat with the audience. You learn of people’s wishes for the Holiday, and why certain songs ‘mean so much.’  It is truly the magnificent talent of Bell’s band that allows the show to flow. They seamlessly answer requests with spot-on versions of Christmas classics, and then some.

Dayton, once again, proves you don’t need to search for talent outside of our city limits. Take special note of the duets, as Handy and Drennen blend, back-up and harmonize with each as if they’VE been doing it for years!

‘Season’s Greetings’ is not big, and that is the point. It’s intimate, close-knit…more of a family ‘sing-along.’ The Holidays are about gathering…and laughing….and reminiscing. With all of that in mind, get your tickets for this charmer. Bring your mom, grandma….the one you love….and remember what Karen carpenter sang, ‘Everyday’s a Holiday when I’m next to you!’ That’s it…that’s this show, in a nutshell!!

DayTONS of Shopping: Purchasing with a Purpose….Grace Lane Boutique!

December 9, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

The big box stores have a huge advantage over the little guy….but where they run off the rails is in promoting ethical practices! Enter Grace Lane Boutique, a shop solely cemented in the idea that sales can serve the greater good. “It all started for me with the Bangladesh garment factory collapse in 2013. Many favorite brands of folks were made there…and on that day 1200 people died. I was like, what in the world are we doing?” said Danielle Goodman, the store’s proprietor. “I don’t think people realize what they are supporting when they buy certain brands, but we can do better!” And better is the name of the game at Grace Lane. Cozy, comfortable and a sense of peaceful shopping await in her 2 locations. (133 East 4th Street in Dayton & 4395 Holly Dr. at the Greene.)

The store is warm and the lighting suggests more than an in and out kind of experience. Each bar of soap, pair of socks or candle has a connection to ‘do the right thing’ in society. “I try to keep my eye on products that make a difference. Human trafficking, ethical sourcing, fair trade and fair treatment of women really resonate with me. It matters.” And with that, the brands are top notch and LOCAL! Dault Pottery (Bellbrook), Jill’s Jewelry (Clayton) and 11th Candle Company (Columbus) are just a few of the vendors represented. “Conscious Step Socks are all about doing better for the world. They are a top seller in my store. People want to do the right thing and support companies who support people.” One more vendor of note is Thistle Farms, a Tennessee company that uses it sales to help women with addiction, find them jobs and provide counseling. It is located in Nashville. Their theme is Healing, Hope & Freedom for Women Survivors. https://thistlefarms.org.

Clothing is the biggest seller in Grace Lane, but there is plenty to see. “We try to keep finding the right items for the boutique that are also mission driven.” Beyond the merchandise, and the coziness, you feel the love of the game. Danielle embraces people and their needs in a way that is genuine and sincere. As in any business, what drives the dollar is relationships, and Danielle gets that. You feel like family when you grab your goodies and head out the door. “I want my clients to feel good, and I want to feel good about what they have purchased. So many of them are thrilled to know they are making a difference. It’s that awareness that really drives me!”

There is plenty to gift in the boutique for the Holidays.  Stocking Stuffers, dresses, handbags, jewelry….the list is endless. There is not better way to not only help one of Dayton’s small businesses, but to go beyond and help those in need elsewhere than to visit Grace Lane. She has done the research. and for you it’s all about trying it on and realizing it feels good to do good!

Back on Top (of the Market!)

October 21, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

For Bonnie Mendelson and her two children, the excitement of seeing  the Top of the Market‘s Renaissance comes at a bittersweet time.   Since the passing of Dayton Icon, Sandy Mendelson, the family has been moving his dream for the deli and event space forward. It has gained traction and attention in recent weeks…and it’s just getting started.

“The place has a renewed electric energy. The community has been so supportive of our recent changes. It feels so great!” says Heather Mendelson-Goodrich.”We are feeling the uptick in business, and people are talking about the changes.” And there have been plenty. In recent months, a new menu, an added cocktail bar and a change in hours have highlighted the Top of the Market. “It is becoming the place to once again be seen.” Says Bonnie Mendelson. “We are having some great events here and our new team is outstanding.”

Heading up that ‘new’ team is New York Transplant, John Capobianco. With his vast experience in hospitality and restaurant ownership, Capobianco brings new eyes and ideas to the space. “It’s really exciting to be part of this. In a very short time we have been able to construct a comfortable lounge area, create a  comprehensive new menu and open a nice bar area…All New and Just For You!” Capobianco smiles as he delivers the new motto! But it hasn’t all been smiles for the Top of the Market. Changes take time, and there are inevitably bumps a long the way. Staffing changes, ordering new furnishings and get the ‘word out there’ are just a few of the challenges.

“We’re getting there.”  says Capobianco, who has found Dayton the friendliest of cities. “People are so happy for us, which means so much.” The Market employs around 20 workers and features a new Executive Chef, Will Campollo. “Everyone’s getting on-board. Events are up!” There are two main event spaces, the Warehouse which accommodates 350 people and the Loft which accommodates 170. Both spaces have all the necessary parts and pieces for meetings, weddings and other large get-togethers.

The Bar and Bistro, which will have a Happy Hour from 4-7pm (closing at 10pm), will also feature some signature cocktails, including the ‘Stacked’ Paloma (Tequila, Mexican Ginger Ale, Jarritos and Fresh Lime juice) and the Dayton Rubi (Grey Goose, Prosecco, St. Germaine and Cranberry Juice). The Bar and Bistro will begin it’s soft-opening around 11/8.

The Gourmet Deli, which is already a go-to for downtowners, is now open Monday-Saturday 10-7pm. New items are being rolled out as we speak…tacos, stir-fry, various bowls and the much-loved Bowl and a Half (Bowl of soup and half a sandwich.) “We recently added Saturdays and they are picking up. There is also patio seating for the bar and deli! We are really looking forward to enhancing our deli by adding local retail, grocery items and the likes. (Think local eggs, dressings, honey…etc…). What makes it even more convenient to our customers is the amount of free parking we offer on the south side of the building. There is so much going on in the Webster Station area, it’s good to be involved in it and with the support of Harlan, Bonnie and Heather, the sky’s the limit!” Capobianco added.

“We really appreciate John,” says Bonnie Mendelson, “and all he has brought to the market,”  It’s always good to be back on TOP!

The Top of the Market, Gourmet Deli and The Bar and Bistro are located at 32 Webster Street in Dayton. For more information call (937) 224-3663.

CAUTION! – MEN AT WORK…for CLOTHES THAT WORK!

April 23, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

One of Dayton’s most beloved fundraisers is back…and the Men are RED HOT this year! Clothes that Work presents their annual ‘MEN AT WORK’  an online competition featuring local businessmen and community leaders raising funds for the organization.   25 ‘Role Models’ share their story and their professional image for three weeks as they campaign for votes. Every vote is a $5 donation to Clothes that Work. The result is funds raised for a good cause and the Role Model with the most votes is awarded ‘Ambassador of the Year’!

Lagman is the reigning champ!

Last year’s reigning champion, Shawn Lagman shared his feelings about the worthwhile contest. ‘It is awesome to be part of something that helps people who are trying to better themselves.  There is something in helping others overcome adversity that tends to get people involved in making a difference!’ Lagman had some sage advice for this year’s ‘male models.’  ‘Dive in HEAD FIRST!

Talk to everyone about what you are doing. Use your resources, connect through social media. Tell people about the great work CTW does…they will want to help!’ Lagman loved the mission behind the event adding, ‘People feel how they look. Clothes that Work allows people to feel confident!’

CTW Executive Director Cindy Garner

‘Clothes That Work, builds new starts.’ says Executive Director, Cindy Garner.  ‘Proper interview attire can be THE barrier to getting work for some job seekers. A new outfit changes perspectives, builds confidence and creates possibilities for our clients.’   Garner loves the ‘Men at Work‘ event and feels it showcases just how giving the Dayton Community is. ‘It is a fun way to get our message out to the public. We are so hopeful to break all records this year!’   The kick-off party takes place Monday, April 26th at Tender Mercy. ‘The venue is just amazing, and it allowed us to snatch Branden Fugate (TM bartender), a true contender!’  You can watch the event virtually by clicking the Facebook link: https://fb.me/e/29eT9k1RA.

John Capobianco impressed by Dayton community.

Helping lead the charge this year is NYC transplant, John Capobianco. ‘I was so fortunate to be introduced to CTW from a friend in the events business, Nick Warrington. He told me about this contest, and I knew I wanted to be involved.’ Capobianco bring years of events experience with him from NYC, and is impressed by Dayton’s dedication to charitable organizations. ‘Listen, the boutique rivals anything New York has to offer. And the idea that CTW empowers people to grow in self-confidence and self-worth is really fantastic!’  The impressive boutique is located  at 1133 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd., Suite 392 and open Monday – Friday: 10AM to 2PM, Second Saturday of Each Month: 9AM to Noon.

Philip Drennen loves the mission behind the modeling!

‘Men at Work‘ really is about guys giving their time, looks and energy to make a difference. One entry this year, Dare To Defy’s Philip Drennen put it like this, ‘I knew so little about Clothes the Work. When I was asked to participate it went beyond just doing the modeling for this. I am dedicated to doing my part to help people get that interview that could and will change their life!’ Drennen is hoping for a whopping 300 votes, and the title of ‘2021 Ambassador of the Year!’  ‘I am in the entertainment industry,’ Drennen said. ‘We have had to alter our lives during the pandemic, and I know for many entertainers, corporate interviews are a new way of doing things. Clothe that Work will likely be helping some of my entertainment industry friends!’

You can support Clothes that Work by donating some of your own gently used professional clothes. CTW accepts donations by appointment Monday -Friday, simply go to this site.

Dayton Ballet’s ‘Cinderella’ Lures Long Island Danseur!

April 17, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

The Dayton Ballet has proven resilient through the COVID crisis, keeping dancers on their toes, and landing guests from bigger cities! ‘”I need to perform LIVE, I need an audience. I was dancing with the Metropolitan in New York and kept hearing ‘The Met will never close, never close!’ And then they closed.”  Time to make some decisions for Long Island native, Christopher Brian Nachtrab. The 13 year ballet veteran thought ‘Is this it? Is this how it ends?’ “I immediately started looking around for companies trying to do some kind of live performing. There were a few. Of course, safety was the first thing you had to think about.” Nachtrab has worked with Sacramento and Richmond Ballet companies. He is a graduate of Indiana University.

Nachtrab falls hard for Dayton!

“I heard one of the first to really move ahead with at least some kind of safe performing was here in Dayton. Then, I heard about Cinderella, a ballet I love and have performed multiple times. I put word out that I was hoping to join the company as a guest!” Sometime later, word came from Dayton Ballet Director, Karen Russo Burke. “She’s amazing. Dayton has such a great team and she is an incredible leader.” Nachtrab landed a part….as the Ugly Stepsister! “I was thrilled.” His sister -in-crime is Dayton Ballet’s own Isaac Jones. “We have a great time together!”

Dayton Ballet’s ‘Cinderella’ runs 4/23-4/25 with virtual options as well. “The show, obviously has limited seating, but knowing the audience is live just makes such a difference. We need their reactions to help us perform!”

Some UGLY Stepsisters.

For Nachtrab, dance is in his blood, His mother was his instructor on Long Island. “She still teaches dance today, and she’s stellar at it!” Nachtrab knew being a boy in ballet was not the norm…”But my parents told me if it is what you want, we will stop at nothing to see that you are successful.”  And he has been. As a child he dreamt of performing with the Met, and then it happened. “I remember getting on that stage and just thinking, it’s come full circle!” A city just outside of that circle is new favorite for Nachtrab….DAYTON! “I was so impressed with how this city embraces the arts. It’s a stronger bond than many big cities. Dayton is rallying around the arts community, and with COVID, many of us were feeling depressed and isolated!” His love for Dayton was a quick one, visiting many restaurants, bars, the Oregon District and even a trip to the Drive-In. “There’s a lot to enjoy here.”

As for the Ballet’s ‘Cinderella,’ the production is serious, hilarious, true-to-tale and magical! The costuming, which folks have been floored by, is simply fantastic with design by DB alum Lowell Mathwich. Pristine sets and impressive design add to the flair of the Ballet.

‘Cinderella’ Gets Her Chance!

With all of that, and the chance to do a live performance, Nachtrab has found a home away from home…at least for now. “I am getting to do what I love, with a group of dancers who are exceptional! ‘DRAG’ging Dayton Through The ‘MUD’lick!

March 4, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton has many icons. Rob Lowe, Allison Janney. Jonathan Winters. Nancy Cartwright….many more. Two of Dayton’s biggest iconic Drag Queens are joining forces to kick-off a new ‘talk/info/game’ show entitled ‘The FonDana Show!’ And it looks to be a ‘HOOTENANNY!’

Fonda Peters and Dana Sintell, two of the founding members of Dayton’s legendary ‘RubiGirls’ are stepping into new roles as show hosts. “It’s a little bit ‘The View” mixed with a touch of “The Price is Right” wrapped in a Sunday Afternoon informercial.’ says Peters. ‘There will be some laughs, some learning…oh and some great cocktails!’

The show films at Mudlick Tap House and will feature signature drinks prepared by Thomas Morris, a Mudlick Mixologist. ‘I can’t wait!’ says Morris. ‘It’s gonna be whacky!’ The cocktails will be shared with the guests….and the line-up of guests is stellar for the first taping.

‘We put an all-call out on Facebook, and it blew up!’ Says Sintell. ‘Our first taping features Darryl Demure (TV Star) , Amelia Robinson (Columbus Dispatch) , Michelle Kaye (PNC), Kevin Tunstall (Arcade), Alexis Larsen (DAI), Eva Buttacavoli (The CO) & Philip Drennen (D2D). These are all local heavy-hitters and they have much to share with the Dayton Community!’ The initial taping will take place on 3/8 with an announced premiere to come.  We’re looking forward to having a live audience, once Covid ends.

Fonda Peters and Dana Sintell

The FonDana Show actually evolved. ‘It’s true. So, a couple of the RubiGirls were on vacation in NY. A phone call from LA came through and they wanted to talk to Dana about doing a business make-over show along with India Summer.’ Peters continues. ‘COVID postponed that, but it got us thinking…let’s do something here in Dayton! From there, along came Indigo Life Media‘s Andrew and Lauren White! They are spectacular to work with. They get our MoJo and together, we see a terrific show in the making! People have been saying forever,’The RubiGirls need a show…and here we are!’ Other RubiGirls will appear from time-to-time with Minnie Skirt and India Summer each having a recurring role.

Joshua (Dana) Stuckey and Tim (Fonda) Farquhar

The actual show gives guests a chance to talk about their special part in the Dayton Community. Along with that, each and every guest gets a chance to raise money for their favorite charity through games. ‘This is the kind of crazy I love!’ says Sintell. ‘To know we are helping people is the RubiGirl Way! We have had very successful virtual events, and with the professionalism of this production team, we are PUMPed! It’s exciting to know something good came out of the last year…and I think this show will be good for our community!’

If you are interested in taking the stage on the FonDana Show for their May taping, send your pertinent info to [email protected].

Defending Democracy: An 8 Week Series.

September 19, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

We are living in a most unusual time. There seems to be a desire to silence the voices of Americans…on all sides. To have the discussions necessary, I m fortunate enough to teach a class at Wright State University this year known as ED2100:Education in a Democracy. The topic seems so simple. The idea of educating people to understand our Democracy and the importance of their individual voice is fundamental….or is it?

27 students have joined me on this journey. We are looking hard at diversity, privilege, equality, oppression and respect of others’ views. What makes this conversation so important is a divided nation, an upcoming election…and the unique views and voices of these young people looking to broaden their minds and their world. At the center of it all is the overwhelming reality that …‘if education fails, so does this Democracy!’ – credited to John Adams.

In one of their first big assignments, TEAM2100 was charged with relating lyrics from a popular song to the state of our republic. Although we aren’t including students’ names, their views are pretty straightforward. Some of the songs/lyrics they chose, old and new, were spot on:

“I…can barely walk the city streets whiteout a cop harassing me, searching me and asking my identity”, Tupac;

“If you’re looking for hope tonight, raise your hand. If you’re feeling alone and don’t understand. If you’re fighting in the fight of your life, then stand. We’re gonna make it through this hand-in-hand.” , For King and County;

“We didn’t start the Fire, It was always burning since the world’s been turning. We didn’t start the fire, No we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it.” , Billy Joel.

“Lil tear gas cleared the whole place out, I’ll be back with the Hazmat for the next round.”  Anderson Paak.

“We hate the government but get government assistance. You Ain’t doing what you did in the past then why tell us and I ain’t blaming no white man for my failures and I don’t blame the judge for the time I did.”, Knocka

From these lyrics, conversation…and here is a sampling of what is on their minds:

“…as I am working toward becoming a high school teacher I am beginning to realize that we really aren’t taught about our civic duties. We kind of take for granted that people will read and learn about what elected officials are up to….BIG MISTAKE believing that!”

“…and I believe, love him or hate him, Donald Trump exposed Washington for what it is. He’s made us see ourselves as well. The idea that many voters choosing him are non-college educated people speaks not to their ability, but to our society!”

“COVID has been a blessing. We have been forced to slow down, see the problems of our world and find new ways to fix them. I cannot wait to share with students the very idea that we are creative enough to get through anything…because we are!”

“Racism. I know this class will look into the power of diversity, but how about the overwhelming power of Racism. That’s a power struggle that we are so afraid to discuss…it scares me.”

“My fear is God gets left out of the equation. …..The US has abandoned the idea of higher power, and morals….what do we expect when we answer to no one?”

“…so tell me this, why would a pandemic ever be political?’

“We must educate our population. We must strive to show them a better way of life. This is a Democracy, a place on many voices. They need informed opinions, not social media posts.’

You can see that there is much on the hearts and minds of these young adults. Follow us through this interesting conversation. It should be enlightening for all sides!

PRIDE 2020: The Greater the Storm, the Brighter the Rainbow!

June 2, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

Is it OK to be PROUD in a pandemic?
The LGBTQ+ community made it through the HIV epidemic.

Is it OK to be PROUD during social unrest?
The community made it through the StonewalI Riots.

Is it OK to be PROUD through a rough election cycle?
The community put Barack Obama in office.

I assure you, the LGBTQ+ family has seen these obstacles before.  The obstacles weren’t times to just be proud, but times that made us proud as a community. Faced with challenging times, the LGBTQ+ community relies on one major thing: EACH OTHER.

Granted, Pride 2020 won’t be your normal June event. Social distancing, masks and empty dance floors definitely make the hurdles a bit higher. No matter…the idea that Pride is found in a crowded bar or a multi-colored parade, really scratches the surface of its significance. Those pieces, those parts are the celebration of the advancements and accomplishments of the gay community. Pride is about accepting where we’ve been, and realizing how far we still can go.

Sure, we need the fun. We need to feel the heartbeats of those like us within a few feet, sharing their smiles, their songs & their beers. Not this year…this year, it’s time to do what this LGBTQ+ family is known for: CREATIVITY!

There are plenty of rumblings about on-line Drag Shows featuring some of our local favorites, just dying to wiggle their foam hips to raise money for our local gay charities. There are rumors of socially distanced get-togethers, 6 feet apart, but still good for laughs! There are some really great films and shows on streaming services that give every angle of the Pride Movement. There are restaurants and bars returning to life with waving rainbow flags to welcome the family in for food and drink. And anyone who knows Dayton knows that somewhere, sometime a pop-up party in parking lot is always possible…(hmmmm???) And for the purist gay pride person, a parade is being planned for late August, to make sure we all having something to look forward to….all of that sounds GAY and good!

So, what will you do to move the needle forward for June 2020? Come out to your family and friends? Read about Marsha P. Johnson? Get to know about our most recent fallen icon Larry Kramer? Share a zoom meeting with your families and tell them your favorite Pride story? Make high heel shaped cookies, and share the recipe on-line? Talk to the more mature gay set about Dayton His/Herstory? Visit the Stage Door for a drink in one of Ohio’s oldest gay bars? Find out info about Natalie Clifford Barney, honored in the park at our main library? Buy your loved one an obnoxious gay pride t-shirt, for the hell of it? Find ways to raise money for our transgendered brother and sisters in their on-going quest for equality? Support the plethora of Gay/Lesbian businesses and restaurants in the area? Teach your children about acceptance of all people? Learn more about Bayard Rustan….

Ok, ok. You get it. PRIDE is not the parade...it is the long walk together we make when we aren’t in feathers and leathers! It is the long walk we make hand-in-hand when the world tries to separate our mission and our vision! It is long walk we make through social unrest, political unease and even epidemics.

Be PROUD of your gayness….you were given an amazing gift….the gift of WHO YOU ARE!

Dear Archdiocese…When A Rule is Wrong, ALTER It!

April 30, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

There is no doubt that when a person signs a contract of employment, they have standards to live by. There is also no doubt, that a standard, like public opinion, can change over time. As we evolve, rules must be ALTERed….or we would still be hunting witches in Salem.

Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio has a tough path ahead. They are, in reality, placed as the fulcrum in a battle between ‘the Goliath’ and David. In this case, it is the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati that plays the larger role, using contractual words to fire a beloved and highly respected teacher. This teacher was great for Alter for 22 years, and then suddenly, was not. It is in the ‘was not’ that things get uncomfortable. The diocese, like many Catholic institutions, views homosexuals, especially those in legal same-sex relationships,  as a fireable offense. And, word of the firing, based on this guideline, has now reached national and international publications. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati has a mess on its hands.

‘For those looking at the contract as the answer, they are right, it says what it says.’ says Jack Omer, a vocal opponent of the decision and 1998 Alter grad. ‘Now it’s up to the community to come together as one voice to make the dioceses see, it’s the policy that’s wrong.’ he isn’t alone. A letter to the diocese has already garnered 11,000 signatures.  There is a Change.org petition you can sign online if you’d to help fight for the right for this teacher to teach.

Brad and Nikki Lawson, whose children attend Alter stated,  ‘As parents, we are deeply disappointed that a great teacher is leaving Alter. This action is not in line with how we are raising our children to treat everyone with love and respect. We don’t know the details but we support Alter and we do not believe this was Alter’s decision.’

Many agree. And Alter may be put into a position they did not choose, nor want. For many businesses in the area, it will become hard to support the school, and for Alumni, it will be difficult to defend Alter’s ‘unchosen’ stance.

‘Being gay, or female, or black, or tall is all genetics. I don’t understand why the Catholic Church wants to judge anyone on something genetic. It really makes no sense.’ Omer continues. ‘I think making decisions like this is dangerous. Where does it end? The church should know to stay out of people’s personal lives.’

One area priest, who has asked to remain anonymous, would only state, ‘I believe Jesus would invite all kinds of people, and definitely those being persecuted to his table. That’s what Christianity is all about. The diocese has the right to make rules, but no one has the right to make people feel bad for being the person they were created to be.’

It has definitely left folks with strong feelings. Petitions are scattered on Facebook with hopes of changing minds at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

‘We are very sad that people outside the community can make decisions that so profoundly impact the school and students. That should change.’ The Lawsons added.

A letter popped up on Twitter from an Alter senior Molly Goheen pointing out this great teacher that she learned so much from. Within the letter are quotes from the Bible, which many view as the ultimate book of learning. She points out Romans 2.11 “For God Does Not Show favoritism,” making not one child of God superior to another. Yes, well….

Like so many decisions based in black and white religious views, the results are mostly painful. A good teacher loses a job. A revered high school’s reputation takes a hit. Christianity, and organized religion, again lose followers. And for what? For what?

There isn’t one of us who doesn’t understand it. Yep, it’s a rule. Yep, they have the right….but as Omer put it ‘Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!’

In a divided, highly political time in our history, sometimes the best decisions come through kindness…which in turn, will lead to honor.

MERCY ME! The RubiGirls to the RESCUE!

April 22, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton has quite a few heroes…Charles Kettering, The Wright Brothers, Erma Bombeck, Jane Reece…and of course, The RubiGirls! The ever-present, charity driven drag troupe have finally emerged in this time of quarantine to help us all laugh, love and raise some funds for our friends! This time the GIRLS, led by a quarter of qualified Queens, Fonda Peters, India Summer, Minnie Skirt and Dana Sintell, set their sights on people on the front line in this health crisis, and the folks making those amazing carry-out dinners in the area.

‘I received an email, ‘ says India Summer.”Where are the RubiGirls? There have been plenty of other queens posting all kinds of fun and frolic on Facebook, but NO RUBI???” That’s when we knew, it was time for us to make ourselves heard again. To spread the word that we are here to help.’

‘A show was what we needed to do, but social distancing presented a real problem.’ says the 7-foot tall Minnie Skirt. ‘How do we make this work?’

Enter the talents and touches of Tender Mercy. Chris Dimmick, Lauren Gay, Dave Kittredge and Branden Fugate had an idea. ‘Let’s do an actual production…a show…a virtual drag show that people can see online!’ Said Dimmick, The GIRLS were unsure as they are used to the idea of live, full theater, with a responsive audience. BUT, Dimmick held his position….’We can do this!’

‘I was curious!’ said the quintessential  Fonda Peters. ‘ Like a real TV show? Really….I asked them to explain!’ And explain they did.

Dimmick and Gay dug in and told the RubiGirls, ‘Start making videos, pre-produced, spliced and diced….until you have a show we can run! We will help with some video and sound of our own. We can do this!’

But Sintell balked…as she often does. ‘No, no, no…I initially squirmed. We need our fans three feet in front of us. They are our lifeblood. And besides, many of the live and virtual drag shows have been hideous and boring. The online shows have been greatly panned.  I wasn’t convinced….UNTIL….’

India Summer opened the eyes of all when she interjected. ‘What about all of the Girls make their own movie but we host the show live.  A bit of both. only a few girls, 6 feet apart, telling the RubiGirls story, but raising money for our friend in Dayton.’

Dimmick, Gay, Kittredge and Fugate smiled and said…’We got this Girls! We can do this! And it will be FABULOUS!’

And it definitely will. This Friday, April 24th starting at 7pm, the Girls have an unbelievable collection of old and new Rubi productions to share. The 75 minute show will feature Sintell and Peters as the Hostesses, with Skirt and Summer to assist. There will be virtual bar tours, spectacular RubiGirl numbers, and cocktail recipes, including the popular RubiSlipper. ‘The RubiSlipper has been a huge hit.’ says Dimmick. ‘The RubiGirls agreed to a 50% share of all the RubiSlippers we sold to go to charity. You won’t believe the amount of money we raised in just 3 days open (before the stay-at-home order). People love the drink, but even mores0, the RubiGirls!’ The Tender Mercy team will be on hand to tell their story to subscribers as well.

Minnie Skirt added, ‘We have seen the videos. WOW, WOW, WOW! Tara Misu and Magestik nailed their videos! And the opening is just amazing! Actually, everything you see is top notch!’

Fonda Peters chimed in, ‘I think this is the start of a new version of the RubiGirls. This show is really over-the-top entertaining. You will get to see the Girls all over Dayton celebrating the city and showing that life goes on! We are quarantined, but we are still able to take care of each other. That’s an important message right now.’

‘I’m impressed.’ Says Lauren Gay.’These RubiGirls are hard-workers. They really are bringing our community together this Friday! Something we can all share in!

Fugate interjected, ‘They like to drink, too.”

Dana Sintell wrapped up the conversation for us with ‘In this day and age, anyone can make a short film. Tik-Tok, IMovie, IPhone Films…etc. But again, the Girls take it to a new level. It’s about something bigger than the film. It’s about people. It’s about Dayton! We try to always keep Rubi on a level of MORE….More LOVE, More GIVING and More ENTERTAINING!.’

They have again achieved it.

For tickets, go to Tendermercy.com. Next click Mercy Mart. Then, Click on RubiGirl packages. Pick one! Look for your code which will be sent Friday for the BIG SHOW! Sit back and ENJOY!

Giving a ‘Schitt!’ What are you Watching Part 2!

April 10, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

First of all, thank you all for your feedback to the first installment of ‘What are you Watching!’ I have never received so many comments, ideas and criticisms…and I love them ALL! A few shout-outs to Kent (Time Team), Jan (West Wing Reruns), Kathy (Little Fires Everywhere) and the plethora of other suggestions for what to watch. I am checking out all I can! It’s been a week, and the way we are consuming tv, I know you are all on to something NEW! Here are my ‘few’ to ponder!

‘Making the Cut’ It’s Not THAT Runway Show.

I have always been a fan of Tim Gunn’s. He’s real, he’s direct, and he’s not afraid to show emotion. This may be his vehicle more than the perpetually peppy Heidi Klum. ‘Making the Cut’ took a different approach to fashion and its next big star. This time there are 12 established designers from everywhere in the world. (2 from Ohio!) The money is also a change…$1,000,000 to the big winner. What I find to be the best change, the locales! We have visited Paris for some incredible venues highlighting the designers’ fashion shows, and about to hit TOKYO! I have a group of friends who got me into ‘MTC’ and I’m glad they did. These designs, no sewing experience necessary, are more…well MORE! You see, these designers do multiple looks, more than one singular design…like a true fashion show! That helps us understand their vision. Unlike the stalwart ‘Project Runway,’ many people might hit the road after each presentation. Interestingly on ‘MTC’ people get to make the case for why they should stay! ‘MTC’ isn’t perfect, by any means. It wants us to like Heidi a lot….and relies heavily on cute little homestyle videos her, along with Gunn, doing cutesy local activities. UGH! At its core, it’s truly entertaining. It means well, even though you wouldn’t believe that when you experience the vicious and ruthless reviews of judge, Naomi Campbell. (I’m scared of her!)

‘Making the Cut’ score – 8.6/10. Fashion fanatics will love it!

‘Self-Made’ Oh, What Could Have Been!

As a former 4th grade teacher, and one who loved teaching the story of Madam C.J.Walker, I couldn’t wait for this one. You combine one of America’s most-beloved actresses, Octavia Spencer, with up-and-running Tiffany Haddish and add many other familiar faces and you just knew it was going to work. (Best laid plans) Self-made is giving you one of America’s most important African-American female success stories…actually just one of America’s most important success stories, period! You settle in for this mini-series hoping it will provide you with all the ingredients…comedy, drama and inspiration. It’s not long before you begin to realize that artistic liberties were taken in making this show that really diminish the story. It appears Seussical! Silly at times. Haddish almost seems in on the joke in a few scenes.  When the story is on track and Spencer is on the screen, it’s real, clean and highly watchable. As someone who owns hair salons, I wanted the ‘meat’ to the story, but it wraps itself in Disneyfied delusions and (I Understand what they tried to do here) hip-hop 1900’s music? ‘Self-Made’ more describes the writers and directors here, as they took an important story and made it about…well, themselves! By the end of the series, you really aren’t sure you even like those we should absolutely admire.

‘Self-Made’ score – 7/10. Thank God for Octavia!

‘Invisible Man’ You’ll See Right Through it.

Ever watch those films you don’t hate, you don’t like, you don’t love….you get the point! I like Elisabeth Moss, and at times, I think in this film she saves its failures. She can’t, however, save a plot that is fraught with holes! ‘Invisible Man’ doesn’t take time enough to let us care about the characters. It’s rushing to scare us, intrigue us and confuse us….well, at least they confused us. Moss and her co-stars have some thrilling moments…the dinner scene is sure to be a talked about classic…the fight scene with Aldis Hodge and the ‘Man’…..and even the bloody nose of Storm Reid….give you some ‘wows’….but it’s flat. Just flat! I had read about the ending and heard I would be astounded….but I saw the ending coming in the first hour (which pissed off my co-watcher)! I’ve been online today reading through reviews of this film, they’ve been brutal. IT’s NOT that BAD….it’s just not so good. It’s a story we all know, and we all want to buy into. Wait a few weeks, and even the buying part will be easier to swallow!

‘Invisible Man’ score – 7/10. Boooooo, no really,  booooooo!

‘Schitt’s Creek’ Farewell Friends!

In 2015, I wrote a review about some crazy show I had tuned into with the incredible Catherine O’Hara! Looking back at that review, I mentioned it felt like ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ in reverse. I stand by that! In the 5 years that would follow, millions of people would start to give a Schitt about this now iconic show. I literally had floodgates watching the end of the show…not so much the episode, but the farewell that followed. We have all been indoors, cooped up, cranky and antsy. There was something about waiting on ‘Schitt’ to show up on the screen, and the world would be rited for a bit. And now, you’re taking that away from us, too??? After listening to the cast and crew, I get it. Leave while it’s still beloved and fresh. Don’t wear it out. What made ‘Schitt’ special was the characters. You came to love them all….(David, Alexis, Moira, Stevie)….and even the not-so-main characters, held our hearts…(Jocelyn, Ted, Gwen, Ronnie)…because they became our ‘pretend’ family! ‘Schitt’s Creek’ could have taken the easy way out in their final episode, and I won’t spill any beans about it, but they held up their heads and gave you the ‘right’ kind of ending. It was fair, open and heartfelt. Not often, do I say, someone hurry and make a movie…but someone hurry and make a movie.

‘Schitt’s Creek’ score – 9.7/10. Where everyone fits in!

Alright…see ya next week. Keep in touch with me! You help me with my material…and I need all the help I can get!!
