PUSH hosts Bachelor Auction

meninthecityPUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health) is a group of Planned Parenthood volunteers who advocate for the use of prevention to promote sexual health and prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies. On Thursday, May 6th  PUSH will put a dozen men on the auction block to raise funds to continue their mission to  educate and promote sexual health.

Eligible bachelors from their early 20’s through mid 40’s will be on the block to the highest bidder. An engineer, lawyer, stand up comedian, nonprofit executive, social media expert, Fitness Trainer- PUSH has recruited men from all over the Miami Valley, offering  someone for every taste.  Each bachelor comes with a date package that compliments their interests, from dining and the theater to rock climbing and a picnic.  Click here to view bio’s on each bachelor.

HBO Def Poetry Jam Performer, Musicians, More Kick Off Third Season of Creative Arts Showcase “The Signature: A Poetic Medley Show”

The performance will be held from 9 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 16, at the Schuster Performing Arts Center, 1 W. This vibrant monthly showcase features local and national poets, musicians, actors, vocalists, dancers and visual artists. The April 16 show, “Poetic Illusion,” will be headlined by Dana Gilmore, who has shared the stage of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, a spoken word series hosted by Russell Simmons, with the likes of Mos Def, Kanye West and Smokey Robinson. True to her Missouri “Show-Me-State” roots, Gilmore’s writing is intended to inspire and provoke action. She speaks passionately, yet practically, about life’s adversities and alternatives for dealing with them. Today, Gilmore spends her time traveling across the United States performing at universities and other venues while working on songs, stage plays and screenplays.

Joining Gilmore will be El Coats and the Funk Point, which will perform a melting pot of rhythm and blues with a neo-soul twist. Jazz vocalist Shakera Jones will perform and host the event. In addition, a variety of local poets and singers will perform, and comedian I.Q. will make a special appearance ― along with a surprise celebrity guest.

Michael’s Dining and Jazz, 40 N. Main St. in the Kettering Tower lobby, will offer 15 percent off the dinner menu on Thursday, April 15, and Friday, April 16, to Signature ticket holders.

During its first two seasons, “The Signature: A Poetic Medley Show” featured numerous forms of self-expression, including poetry, visual art, drama, dance and such music as jazz, blues, reggae, neo-soul and hip hop ― often to sold-out crowds. Dayton Jewish International Film Festival Returns

dayjewishfilmfestOpening on Tues, April 13th, the Jewish Film Festival celebrates it’s 10th anniversary by sharing 12 films, live discussion and receptions at five locations over the next two weeks.

Selections range from documentaries like Refusenik– on the campaign to free Soviet Jews to animated shorts like God & Co, starring Comedy Central’s Jonathan Katz.   Many of the films are foreign and will feature subtitles. Tickets are $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for students and full festival passes are available for $65.Tickets may be purchased online or contact Karen at 853-0372 for more information.

How you can help your community for the next 10 years

censusDid you know that in only 10 minutes, you can help your local community for 10 years? That’s because the answers that every Ohioan gives to the 10 simple questions on the 2010 Census questionnaire will impact Ohio for the next 10 years!

This year’s form covers things like how many people live in your household; whether you live in an apartment, mobile home, or a house; and the age and race of each person living in the home. This information is used to determine how Ohio is represented in electoral votes. In recent years, our state has been a battleground state for U.S. presidential races, with our 20 electoral votes often helping determine who would represent our country. How many Ohioans respond to the 2010 Census will have an impact on the number of electoral votes our state has in elections for the next 10 years, with congressional districts adjusted or redrawn to account for population shifts in each state.

More importantly, our responses also help determine how much of the more than $400 billion of federal funding each year is spent in Ohio for not only services like job training centers, but also building roads, hospitals, and schools. We’ve seen how important these investments are in times like these, and we are calling on all Ohio Ambassadors to help others understand the importance of filling out their forms.

As Ohio Ambassadors, you have a unique opportunity to tell your business partners, family, friends, and neighbors about how important just 10 minutes will be to our future. Half of our state has not responded to the form as of this week, and we need every Ohioan counted if we want to continue to support the people and communities of our state. We’re encouraging you to make a difference in your community by filling out your form today and spreading the word about how every person can impact the lives of their neighbors, family, and friends for the next 10 years.

beersStarting Friday, April 2nd, this Moraine Tap Room will be dedicating six taps to some veryunique Belgian brewed beers. Sample sizes will be offered so you can taste them all!! As soon as we kill a keg we will be tapping the next one. The plan is to keep going as long as it takes to run through the aprroximately 24 kegs!!

Spend The Night Cooking With Wiley

wiley3It’s no April Fools joke, on Thursday, April 1st, Meadowlark Chef and Owner will be sharing the recipes and demonstrating the techniques for “Seasonal Side Dishes.” As part of the Springboro Cooks’ Wares guest chef program, Wiley will lead a class on making healthy, surprising and boldly flavorful side dishes. On the class menu:

Capellini Al Limone – lemon, olive oil and Parmesan combine with delicate capellini for the best ever accompaniment for fish and seafood

Spicy Gong Bao Vegetables – garlic, ginger and amazing Sichuan peppercorns create an authentic vegetable stir-fry that bursts with flavor

Cauliflower Flan – An elegant side dish or first course using one of our favorite vegetables–the hit of our New Year’s Eve dinner

Spaghetti Squash Squared – 2 ways to fix this incredible, much misunderstood vegetable that is my current ingredient obsession

Broken Enchiladas – a pan saute of mushrooms, fresh corn tortillas, spicy tomato sauce and cheese that is the perfect thing with grilled beef

Introducing The Growler Co-Op!

growlerBlind Bobʼs, South Park Tavern, Thai 9 and the Trolley Stop have joined forces to offer to-go growlers. All four locations are known as places to get great draft beers, now you can take home some of these draft beers.

How It Works:
Purchase an empty 1/2 gallon growler from any of the four locations for $10. Have it filled with draft beer at any of the four locations. Price for filling growlers will vary depending on the price of the beer itself. The cost will be anywhere from $12 to $30.  While youʼre there enjoy a pint or two of great beer. Take home the full growler, enjoy and repeat. Bring your empty growler back in for a refill at any of the four establishments.

The four members of the co-op try to not have the same beers pouring at the same time so you can get the best variety. All together there are 38 drafts in the co-op. Some beers will not be offered for carry-out because they are limited releases. As an example, Thai 9 has one of four 1/6 barrels of New Holland Brewingʼs Envious in the state, this will be sold at the restaurant only. Each member of the co-op has the choice of what is available for carry-out.

Short Films By, For and About Women

lunafestLUNAFEST is a traveling film festival celebrating women filmmakers while also raising awareness for women’s issues and supporting nonprofits that benefit women in the US and Canada.  This years festival will be on Sun, March 28th from 3-5:30pm at The Neon, 130 E. Fifth Street, Downtown Dayton.  Ranging in style from Animation to Documentary, in origin from Brazil to Bulgaria,in subject from Beauty to Bicycling, tickets are just a $5 or $10 donation or $3 with a student ID.  As a special edition to the fest, Dayton Native, Alicia Conway will screen her short, RITE, followed by a Q & A with the filmmaker.  Rite portrays the day of a young girl’s coronation and entry to adulthood in a family with some grisly traditions.

Sponsors for this years local LUNAFEST include Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance, American Association of University Women and Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region.

Established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST is completely funded by LUNA and run by a small, dedicated group of LUNA employees. 100 percent of all proceeds are donated to charity – 15 percent to the Breast Cancer Fund and the remaining 85 percent of proceeds go directly back to hosting community organizations.

National Rebuilding Day is Sat, April 24th

banner_rtd_logoThe annual signature event of Rebuilding Together,  brings volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners. Through in-kind labor and donated materials, Rebuilding Together Dayton is able to expand every dollar raised into $4.

Rebuilding Together Dayton provides home rehabilitation for low-income Dayton homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, so they may live in warmth, safety and independence.  Since it’s creation in 1996, they have repaired over 900 homes in neighborhoods across the city .

Rebuilding Day applicants must own their own homes in the City of Dayton and have a combined household income of less than 80% of the area median income. Preference is given to homeowners who are elderly and/or disabled and have lived in their homes for a minimum of 10 years. The 2008 recipients’ average income was 34% of median (around $14,000 annually) and average time in their home was 30 years.  Nominations are often made by neighborhood groups, churches, neighborhood development corporations, city housing inspectors, priority boards as well as individuals.
