Hummus Mediterranean Cuisine Now Open

April 28, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new food option in Springboro- Hummus Mediterranean Cuisine opened their doors today, Sunday April 25th at 11am.There’s a new food option in Springboro- Hummus Mediterranean Cuisine opened their doors today, Sunday April 25th at 11am. Whether you crave the tangy zest of tzatziki, the delicate aroma of freshly baked pita bread, or the satisfying crunch of falafel, their menu has something to delight every palate. No newcomers to the business, the owner of Hummus formerly owned Yaffa Grill in Miamisburg and Beavercreek.

While waiting in line to place my order, down an assembly line (chipotle style) the owner treated a couple of us to their homemade vegetarian falafel to try, pipping hot and crispy.

I did the build your own bowl with rice, gyro meat and red onions and the owner brought me out a sample of the chicken shawarma and the humus with pita bread. I did the tahini, tzatziki and garlic sauce on the side, so I could try all three, and have to say the garlic sauce was my favorite.

Fountain or canned drinks are available

This eatery will be open 7 days a week and has seating for about 40 inside and another 20 or so on the patio.  The crowd was steady today with about 1/2 the guests taking their food to go.

Food Truck Spotlight: Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew

April 19, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

James and Lynne Mowery

Lynne Mowery first discovered Cold Brew Coffee in 2018. “From the time we first learned about cold brew to the time we purchased our brick and mortar we visited roughly 350 coffee shops in the midwest.  We decided we wanted to bring a consistent, cold artisan crafted cold brew to the public.

James and Lynne Mowery, hosted the ribbon-cutting on July 31 Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew officially opened August 1, 2020. The brick and mortar location is where they brew and serves as a carry out for

644 N. Broad St. in Fairborn

customers to take our packaged brew with them to home, work, camping, meetings, parties etc. Customers wanted us to offer our cold brew by the glass, which was also a goal of ours, and in August 2021 the BARge I (our original draft trailer) began voyages around the Miami Valley.  At the beginning of the 2023 Food Truck season the BARge II was launched which allowed us to have a more diverse drink menu.”

What are your most popular sellers?
Caramel Creek and White Rapids are 2 of our most popular lattes. Any of our cold brews straight with the nitro infusion, which we call River Rushed, are popular as well. We regularly have 4 brews available including a decaf and a super caffeinated option. Customers are often surprised by how good our cold brew is without creamers and syrups.  We also have the feasibility to serve our cold brew heated for those who only prefer hot coffee.
For the non-coffee drinkers, the Fifty5 Rivers BARge offers Riverade (lemonade–still or nitro, straight or flavored). Our Strawberry Rose Riverade (River Rushed) or one of our Storm Series Riverades (flavored nitro Riverade with creamer) such as our Tranquil Tempest and Cinnamon Cyclone are sought after by many regular customers. Sparkling Flavored Water and Hot Chocolate are a favorite among young children. For the tea lovers we offer River Chilled Black Tea (still or sparkling), along with tea lattes.  We’re excited to launch new tea options for this year with the addition of a green tea.
In the fall months we also have a variety of Apple Cider beverages (hot or cold) like the Apple Caramel Cove, and the Apple Chaider Falls which are seasonal favorites!!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your business?
Embrace the “pivot”, always be willing to adapt.
Where do you dine out when you have some time off?
Anywhere that is a small local establishment, from other food trucks to restaurants. We’re huge fans of local breweries and coffee shops! We love to support other small businesses.

Upcoming Places to find Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew

4/21 10am – 2pm –  Barn Brunch at the Heights

4/25 4- 8pm – Hunger Days Food Truck Rallies

5/25 – 5-9pm Dayton Pizza Fest, Yellow Cab

Grand Opening of Jus Juic’n at Gem City Market This Weekend

April 13, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

This weekend Jus Juic’n will host a grand opening of their third location, this one inside of the Gem City Market.

Gem City Market location taking shape.

Their first location opened in 2011 inside the downtown Dayton YMCA at 316 N. Wilkinson St. and in 2017 they opened their second location  inside the Reibold Building at 117 S. Main St. downtown.

Mann and her parents at the opening of their first locatoin.

General Manager T’Aira Scott explains “Juicing is a lifestyle. Having a healthy lifestyle is important because we are what we eat. Eating live food is what’s best for our live bodies.  All my life, I have watched my parents juice and eat healthy and I have adopted lots of their lifestyles in my own home with my husband and children. I believe it is important to share with others because we want to see people happy and healthy and if we have some knowledge on how to do so, why not share?”

The grand opening celebration is this Saturday and Sunday and the first 100 patrons each day will receive a FREE water bottle, and other door prizes.   They will be open Saturday from noon to 9 pm and Sunday from 3 to 9 pm.

Expect to find juices, fruit smoothies and selections from their menu including vegan chicken burgers and vegetarian chili as well as turkey and salmon burgers.  There will also be cake pops from Scott’s other business Sweetly Dipped, a home bakery that features Cake Pops, Cake sickles and Chocolate Covered Sweets.

T’Aira Scott

Scott’s personal favorite items from the menu are “the vegetarian chilli, ora mae’s fried potatoes, and the incredible hulk. A lot of these food items I grew up on so I really can say that all of them are very delicious.”  Scott began working for the family business in hight school and she now oversees all three locations.

Here’s the menu:

Right now they have 3 power shots – a Ginger shot, wheatgrass shot, and the wellness shot.
Mann explains that ginger is a key ingredient for the wellness shot and of course the ginger shot. Ginger is good for inflammation and nausea, bloating, and chemotherapy among other great benefits. Research has shown that ginger takes the edge off after chemo and is better than some anti-nausea medications.
Wheatgrass is good for energy, skin, and your immune system. Sometimes we have the wheatgrass and juice it with garlic to help combat colds and help lower your blood pressure among other health benefits. Just make sure you stay back from everyone’s face when you have that combo or a pack of mints!
The five benefits for wheatgrass are:
1.Helps cleanse and detoxify your blood.
2. helps make your skin look great.
3. assist in digestion.
4. helps metabolize energy and fat.
5. helps bolster your immune system.

Their most popular juice is the Strawberry Lemonade which is made from strawberries, grapes and lemons.  With 10 fresh juices to choose from, you’ll find your personal favorite.

Northmont Food Hub – 4 Eateries Under One Roof

April 12, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

At 2pm today the ribbon cutting for the new Northmont Food Hub will open the doors to a share space featuring Chef Zay’s Culinary Collective at 322 Union Blvd in Englewood.
Featuring four food businesses under one roof every concept within the collective tells a story”—a story of innovation, taking risks, and, most importantly, satisfying our community’s cravings, shares Chef Zay.
The journey started about just over a year ago when Isiah Davis, owner of The Cookieologist, partnered with Kali Muhammad II, owner of Slide Thru, opened a mobile kitchen.  The concepts offered online ordering, with an alert sent by text when your food would be ready for pickup. You can also scan a QR code and order at the food hub, but there is very limited seating, the concept is geared for to-go food.
The Miami Valley feel in love with the cookies Davis debuted in ghost kitchens in Dayton and Kettering.  The cookies began appearing at local grocery stores. The Notorious C.H.I.P., Dab o Butter, Love Below and Busta Nut became quick favorites and for many the addiction to these amazing cookies continues.
Kali’s gourmet sliders and fluffy beignets have made Slide Thru a big success.  Whether you order the cheeseburger, chicken bacon, ranch, thePhilly cheese slider or the truffle burger slider you can’t go wrong.  Add the garlic truffle parmesan fries to your order or tater tots or the  candied turkey bacon and you’ll make your mouth happy!

Whether you crave the bold intensity of dry rub or the saucy embrace of a wet dip, the choice is yours at WINGDALORIAN .  From classic to exotic, the diverse selection ensures there’s something to satisfy every palate. They offer brined roasted wings. Dry rubbed or wet. There are 40 options to choose: Honey Garlic, Lemon Pepper, Korean BBQ, Jamaican Jerk just to name a few. Complete your meal with Brussel sprouts, carmelized carrots or wedge fries.

My Kinda Pies  Focaccia Dough pressed into a Detroit style pan and topped with our in house made sauces and your favorite toppings.

Adjacent to the Food Hub is JD’s Frozen Custard and Full Circle Brewgarden is right next door.

Food Truck Spotlight: Spicey Rooster BBQ CO

April 5, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Randy Combs, and his wife Gloria own the Spicey Rooster BBQ CO. Their food trailer is called the Rooster Coop.
Randy has been cooking his entire life, watching and learning from his grandmother’s and  mom. While he was in high school he worked at a Rax that was in Dayton.  He first  stepped into the food world  creating his own line of hot sauces, bbq sauces, and rubs.
He and his wife  have been cooking/catering for close to twenty years. I’ve been doing bbq for longer. They started with a canopy, and a custom grill they pulled behind their truck. Two years ago they decided to have a trailer built and that has allowed them to  expanded what they do.
Their  most popular sellers, are  brisket, bbq ribs, and basically anything Randy bbq’s. He’s created dishes using brisket, and  also some oriental bbq dishes. He loves to create culinary experiences through fusing different ethnic foods. Too many people want “Texas” bbq. He told us he doesn’t model what he does after Texas. He says, “my bbq is mine, with much more flavor without a smokey after taste.”  They also offer lots more than BBQ: Hungarian cabbage rolls, pulled pork, smoked sausage, brats w kraut, meatball hoagies, soft pretzels w cheese and chili just to name a few options.

Rick Schaefer Retires & Sells Catering Business

April 2, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Today is the first day of retirement for Rick Schaefer, the CEO of Brock Mastersons Catering. “It’s been 38 years,” Schaefer said. “It’s been a great run.” Rick worked his first festival in 1987 with his mom (who owned Nancy’s Porches in Oakwood) and a couple of employees. They set up the grill, making reubens, grilled salmon and pork chops.  A neighboring vendor said “you’ll never last serving up that stuff,” but 38 years later Rick sure proved him wrong.  When you see the Brock Masterson’s banner art festivals you knew you were gonna get some great crab cakes, hash with dill sauces and salmon.

Schafer says, “I can’t paint or draw, but cooking is my art.”  He recalls that southern comfort food and family cooking together are the best memories of his childhood.  Watching him grandma and aunt cooking were the the genesis that got him into cooking.

Rick has bottled his seasoning so you can use them at home.  There are  5 flavors: Beef, Poultry, Pork, Seafood and Fiesta Dust, available at all 3 Dot’s Markets.

Brock Masterson’s was born in the back of his mother’s restaurant, staging for the festivals they cooked for.  When I asked about where the name came from, Rick explained that Brock was his moms maiden name and Masterston’ was his partners(and now ex-wife) mother’s maiden name.  Together they thought it sounded very authentic Irish.

In 2011 Rick brought on Traci M. Torkelson-Tobin to the business and he says she put us on the catering map. He calls Traci “his secret weapon under the radar, kicking ass.  She’s been a real honor to have as part of the business” and as he made his retirement plans, he agreed to sell the company to Traci and her daughter Caitlyn.   He says he’s burned out on cooking, cutting, cooling batches of 700 lbs of potatoes to make hash.  He won’t miss making those huge quantities ever again.

Before the sale was final, they moved the kitchen to a new spot at Cross Pointe Center in Centerville, which tripled their prep space and gives them a 50 seat room for special events and cooking classes.

riding his bike

Rick said he feels good about stepping away now, with the business in good hands. He says the key to their success has been that they’re OCD about avoiding problems.  In cooking for the Kettering Hospital Heart to Heart dinner for 500 in attendance, they make 600 meals. They over prepare, come early, stay late. It never got routine, weddings, company picnic, he never lost the rush.

While he was making these changes, he also sold his house in Oakwood and has downsized to a condo, so he can spend his retirement doing more traveling, which he loves to do.  He also plans to keep riding his bike and playing tennis, and finds ways to give back to the community that he shares has been so good to him. “Dying broke is a success, he shared and plans to spend his savings exploring the world.

We wish all the best in his next chapter and thanks for all the great food!

Culture Works Campaign for the Arts 50th Anniversary Campaign Co-Chairs

April 1, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Culture Works is pleased to announce the Co-Chairs of the 2024 Campaign for the Arts: Bing Davis as the Artistic Chair, and Rodney Veal as the Community Chair.

Willis “Bing” Davis is an internationally renowned artist with art in public and private collections around the world. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Ohio Governor’s Irma Lazarus Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, the highest art award given in the state of Ohio. In addition to his artistic work, Bing Davis is known for his creative and innovative approach to teaching, learning, and human development through the arts resulted in his receiving state, national and international acclaim.

Bing grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He left when he attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, graduating in 1959. He also attended the school of the Dayton Art Institute and received his Master of Education degree in 1967 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He has traveled all over the world, but continues to call Dayton home and demonstrates his commitment by residing and working in the community. When he retired from teaching in 1998, he opened the Davis Art Studio and EbonNia Gallery in the historic Wright-Dunbar Business District. He has continued offering youth and community art and cultural activities through SHANGO: Center for the Study of African American Art and Culture. Bing is a leading advocate for diversity in both the arts and in our community, and Culture Works is thrilled to have him advocate for the arts and Culture Works as Artistic Chair of the campaign.

“One of the reasons it is important for people to support the arts in Dayton is that the arts add such a quality to life that cannot be added any other way. Art is one of the best ways to…touch all people in all neighborhoods,” said Bing. He added, “Contributing to the arts is one of the best ways to touch all people and to add a richness to living. It gives us all a good feeling to contribute to something so worthwhile – art, music, dance, drama, and creative words.”

Rodney Veal is the host of the Art Show on Think TV, and the podcast “Inspired By.” He has a long association with the arts in Dayton and with Culture Works, where he worked (in 1999) as special assistant to then President John Clark. Rodney has also received MCACD grants and fellowships through Culture Works. He is known for his work as an independent choreographer and interdisciplinary artist, and his works have been performed as part of the Ohio Dance Festival and other regional dance festivals. More recently, Rodney has worked as an adjunct faculty member for Sinclair Community College. He is also a visual artist, and just mounted a show at Indie West. A native Daytonian, Rodney is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a B.S in Political Science and Visual Arts and he has an MFA in Choreography from The Ohio State University. Rodney is President of the Board of Trustees of Ohio Dance and serves on the boards of Friends of Levitt Pavilions Dayton, Dayton Live, Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, WYSO and Homefull.

Rodney commented, “Culture Works serves as a protector of the arts ecosystem in the region, to make sure that this platform is there for people and organizations who create art, and to elevate the creativity that occurs there. They play a necessary role in ensuring that there is a fair and equitable distribution of funding and services to artists of all kinds. We need voices at the table from artists who are creating and sharing their stories from many different and wonderful backgrounds, and they need to be supported. Culture Works provides the opportunity for all those different voices to be heard and their creativity to be experienced, which makes our community that much richer and more special.”

2024 marks the 50th year of Culture Works sustaining, promoting, and advocating for the arts community in the Dayton Region. Formed in 1974 as the Dayton Arts Fund, the organization was charged with raising funds for arts groups in critical need. Individuals and businesses were asked for contributions by volunteers whose goal was to increase the number of donors to the arts. Robert A. Kerr, one of the organizers of the Arts Fund, identified the orchestra, ballet, and opera as the areas of “most critical current need,” and noted “the Dayton Arts Fund later might be expanded to include groups other than the three now covered.” (Journal Herald of October 18, 1974) Additional recipients of Campaign for the Arts funding were added including the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Muse Machine, The Human Race Theatre Company, the Springfield Symphony, and more.

During its 50 years, Culture Works has adapted to meet the changing needs of the arts community. Bing Davis, Artistic Chair of the 2024 Campaign for the Arts, was part of the 1992 community initiative that led to the merger of the arts fund with the Miami Valley Arts Council, to become the Miami Valley Arts Alliance. The organization became both a united arts fund and a local arts agency, adding to the region we serve and to our mission. In 1994, the Arts Alliance was rebranded as Culture Works.

As a United Arts Fund, Culture Works still raises funds for arts organization’s most critical needs, but also introduced a grants panel review system that invites community voices into decisions regarding dispersal of community supported grant funding. As a Local Arts Agency, Culture Works advocates for the inclusion of art and artists in development projects, pursues local, state, and national funding, provides support and services for arts organizations, runs artist support programs–including professional development for individual artists–develops outreach to build connections between the creative and business sectors, and initiatives that improve our community and our schools.

The annual Campaign for the Arts, which is Culture Works’ principal grants program, unites gifts from individual donors, corporate supporters, and workplace giving campaigns into funding for Community Arts Grants. Community volunteers award general operating support to local arts organizations through an open panel application review process.

Boosalis Baking Reopens After Remodel

March 27, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Last fall the husband/ wife team of Xiaxing Lin and Ryan Chen bought the Cross Pointe location of Boosalis Baking and Cafe from Matt Boosalis in a quiet transaction.  They got all the recipes and said they would keep baking all the customer favorites. Matt is currently running the Kenwood location.

They just reopened this week from a  three week shutdown  for some remodeling and new equipment.  The dining room has been newly painted and new lighting has been installed as well as additional seating. Bakery manager Mindy told us there are still some more changes to come in the dining room.

The biggest changes have been made behind the scenes. They’ve added some new equipment that includes a Polin Proofer/ Retarder which  allows them to automate the cycle of fermentation set the prooving cycle to follow the times of  day when they are the busiest.  They also added a Polin Oven, which  automatically rotates the pans to keep temperature even so baker Xiaxing doesn’t have to keep bending down and manually to rotate the product.
They also brought in a World Champion Chef to teach them how to make some new European holiday pastries, including  galette des rois (French King Cake), Italian Panettone, German Kuglof, Stollen. They will slowly be debuting on the baker shelves.
Here’s the pastry menu that had at the shop yesterday:

Pettibone Coffee’s New Spring Menu

March 20, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Pettibone Coffee on Woodman Drive  launches their spring menu on 3/21/24. Here’s a little preview of some of the hightlights:

Up first we have two well known Pettibone original drinks. Purple Haze and Lake Views!
Purple Haze // Espresso | Local Honey | Shaken Lavender Foam | Lemon Peel Garnish | Served in a Lavender Smoked Glass | Served Cold – 6oz | * For here service only
Lake Views // Espresso | Blood Orange & Grapefruit Oleo Saccharum | Grapefruit La Croix | Rosemary & Dehydrated Citrus Garnish | Served Cold – 9oz
For food we have the Smoked Salmon Bagel, which is a reimagined bagel and Lox, and the Chicken Bahn Mi! The smoked salmon we use, just like everything, is of the highest quality and is ridiculously tasty!
Smoked Salmon Bagel // Smoked Salmon | Roasted Garlic & Shallot Cream Cheese | House Pickled Veggies | Dill & Black Pepper Foam | Everything Bagel | GF bagel +$1.50
* We politely decline substitutions and modifications for this item
