Warped Wing Brings on Culinary Director & New Menu

June 27, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Warped Wing Brewing Co. has hired Erin O’Neill to design and run the culinary program at Warped Wing. The culinary program will be reflected at both the downtown Dayton location as well as a new location, “Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery”, a unique barrel- aging facility, Taproom, eatery and test pilot brewery – scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 in Springboro, OH.

Warped Wing helped pioneer the craft beer experience in Dayton over 5 years ago and is the #1 selling craft beer brand in the area. Warped Wing has won accolades for a series of their beer brands within their traditional beer and barrel-aged product portfolio.

“Our drive for making great craft beer has now evolved into a complete customer beverage and food program”, said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster. “Bringing on Culinary Director Erin O’Neill takes us to another level to the benefit of our customers,” said Haggerty. “Erin’s love for creating an amazing food experience is exciting. And seeing how he executes his skills while building menus designed around our beers is even more impressive. It’s a total flavor experience”, Haggerty added.

“My passion for food and beer comes to fruition through the eyes of our customers”, said O’Neill. “Seeing the expression of joy on a customers face is what keeps me excited about this business. Partnering with our brewers to create one-of-a-kind food and beverage selections that compliment one another is what we are all about. Beer has always been about sharing. Now our food program lives up to that same expectation”, said O’Neill.

Warped Wing’a  new menu for the downtown Dayton location debuts  Thursday, June 27th, right before the 4th of July holiday.

The restaurant at both locations will bring innovative, sharable, eclectic menus to complement the robust beer selection. The new Springboro location will have a major focus on smoked meat/food.

Netflix Sets Release Date for Local Filmmakers Sundance Winning Documentary

June 26, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s been a busy month for Yellow Springs filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert.  Earlier this month The Museum of Modern Art opened a career retrospective Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film | MoMA . And just today Netflix announced a Release Date for their latest film, “American Factory.” This eye-popping look at the differences between American and Chinese workers when they come together at a Chinese car-glass factory in Ohio, will open globally in 190 countries on Netflix and in select North American theaters on August 21. Netflix acquired the  non-fiction feature out of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary and became a top early contender in the 2020 Oscar race.

“We are honored and thrilled that Netflix and Higher Ground are teaming up to bring ‘American Factory’ to the world,” said Reichert and Bognar in a statement. “Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. We’re excited about the national and global conversations we believe this film can spark.”

Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar

According to a Indie wire, “The Participant Media production focuses on the dramatic culture clash when a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Following its Sundance premiere, the film impressed Barack and Michelle Obama, who launched their Netflix-partnered Higher Ground Productions last spring “to harness the power of storytelling,” as the former U.S. president described it at the time. This marks the first title from Higher Ground to premiere on the streaming service.”

Stay tuned for more information on how the film release will be celebrated locally.

Meadowlark Celebrates Negroni Week

June 25, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

For one week every June, bar and restaurants mix classic Negronis and Negroni variations for a great cause. It is a celebration of this vintage cocktail all over the country, as well as an opportunity for bars and bartenders to give back to their community.

This year Meadowlark, located at 5531 Far Hills Ave,  is featuring three Negroni cocktails  created by Nikolas Hunt, and the generous folks at Meadowlark will donate $2.00 (for each cocktail!) to the Dayton Food Bank.  This promotion runs through Saturday night.

A Look Back at Smart Guy in a Tie Cocktails Negroni Story:

Classic Negroni

The classic Negroni.

For many a bartender, there is a certain allure to the Negroni. It could be the of the simplicity of the recipe: one part gin, one part sweet vermouth, and one part the bitter Italian liqueur Campari. These basic proportions make the cocktail ripe for experimentation. Which means that the gin can be replaced with bourbon or champagne. The Campari can be replaced with any wide variety of bitters, from Aperolto Zucca. Every time you change one of the ingredients, you change the overall flavor profile. While the Negroni will always stand on its own among the classic cocktails, the variations it has inspired have covered the flavor and color spectrum.

The best legend of the creation of the Negroni starts with an Italian nobleman fleeing to America after having a child out of wedlock. Count Camillo Negroni spent some time in the American West, becoming a cowboy and enjoying the lifestyle of a rancher. When everything was a little calmer, he returned to his native country to settle back into his old lifestyle. He sauntered into town one day, looking for a stiff drink. Thinking the popular Americano (1 oz. sweet vermouth and 1 oz. Campari, topped with soda water) was not going to satisfy his thirst, he asked the bartender to substitute the soda water for gin. It was at that point a legend in the cocktail world was born. And like many other cocktails of the era it was mostly lost after Prohibition, showing up once bartenders started to discover the old recipes.

The one ingredient that takes some getting used to.

Several years ago, Imbibe Magazine declared the first full week of June Negroni Week. It is a celebration of this vintage cocktail all over the country, as well as an opportunity for bars and bartenders to give back to their community. For every Negroni purchased at participating venues, a portion of the proceeds is donated to the charity of their choice.

What is a classic Negroni, you may ask?

Negroni

1 oz. gin
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Campari

Glass: Cocktail or Rocks
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

If you are a fan of gin and all of its herbal glory, this is an amazing cocktail. The bitter Campari is an acquired taste, but it is blunted by the gin and the sweet vermouth. Start here, and work your way forward…

Not a fan of gin? Bourbon fits just as nicely in this cocktail.

Old Pal

1 oz. bourbon
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Campari

Glass: Cocktail
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

For those of you that enjoy whiskey more than gin, here is the Negroni variation for you. Swap the herbal gin for the smooth bourbon, and it is like you have an entirely different cocktail. If rye is not your thing, exchange that for bourbon and make yourself a Boulevardier. Either one is fantastic.

Negroni Sbagliato

1.5 oz. sparkling wine (stay in Italy and hit the Prosecco)
1.5 oz. sweet vermouth
1.5 oz. Campari

Negroni Sbagliato

Bubbles make everything better, right?

Glass: Champagne flute
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour the Campari and sweet vermouth into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until chilled, then strain into the champagne flute. Then top off with the champagne and GENTLY stir. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail and drop in.

It is said that while making a Negroni, a hapless bartender accidentally grabbed an open bottle of champagne instead of the gin and poured it in. Instead of dumping it, he served it to his customer and this star was born. I want to see the bar set up that has the gin ANYWHERE close to the champagne. It seems like a stretch. However, the word sbagliato in Italian means “bungled” or “mistaken”, so there could be an

Unusual Negroni (by Charlotte Voisey)

1 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
1 oz. Lillet Blanc
1 oz. Aperol

Glass: Cocktail
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel or Grapefruit peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange (or grapefruit) peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

If the boldness of the original Negroni is too much for you, Ms Voisey developed a cocktail that dials back all of the intensity. Henrick’s is an amazingly light gin, more cucumber and rose petal than juniper. The Lillet is not very vermouthy, and the Aperol, while bitter and orange, is not as intense as the Campari.

Dark and Smooth Cocktail

A little sweeter, but still with some herbal zing.

Dark and Smooth

1 oz. dark rum
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Jägermeister

Glass: Rocks
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

I will never stop experimenting with one of my favorite spirits, Jägermeister. I have been fiddling with this concept for a while, and finally figured out that the dark rum is the answer. The cocktail leans to the sweeter side for a Negroni, but the herbal notes hit the nose and the palate at the end.

There are many, many more variations of the Negroni out there. If you want to really see the variety of what people have done with the basics of the cocktail, buy the book Negroni: Drinking to La Dolce Vita, with Recipes and Lore by Gary Regan. It has dozens of recipes, some that stay true to the original, some that stray so far off that it is hard to call them a Negroni. But all of them stay true to the idea of the slightly bitter, herbal original.

Find your favorite cocktailing venue and order a classic. They are a delight on the palate, even though for some it is an acquired taste. And if the original is not to your liking, you can see there are many ways to modify it into something you will enjoy. Count Negroni did it over a century ago, and look how well that has turned out. Cheers!

Blues, Bikes & Brews for Dayton Tornado Relief all-day music festival!

The event was the brainchild of Doug Hart. He contacted me about putting on a music festival at the Roadhouse to raise money for those affected by the Memorial Day tornados.

Doug has put together a great lineup of Miami Valley talent for a 10 hour music festival that will take place on both of our stages with each band/performer donating an hour of their time and talent for this event.

Tickets are $20 each, with the Roadhouse providing each attendee with a free Biker Burger and a bottle of domestic beer (or soda). Tickets will be available at the main bar starting Saturday, June 8th after 5:00pm. We will have a link on our website to purchase tickets on-line very soon.

We are doing this through The Dayton Foundation and their Greater Dayton Disaster Relief Fund. 100% of donations to this fund are given to non-profit organizations working directly with those affected by the tornados. The Dayton Foundation does a great job of vetting these organizations to ensure that the proceeds from ticket sales and corporate sponsorships are used to provide the most benefit to those in the greatest need of assistance. In addition, a large local accounting firm has volunteered to audit this fundraiser so that everyone who buys a ticket or becomes a corporate sponsor has assurance that 100% of the proceeds will be going to this very worthy cause.

June 16, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Jim Jarmusch brings art house to the zombie world with inspired(at times) but somewhat tedious The Dead Don’t Die

“You best believe Kylo Ren knows how to swing a wooden lightsaber, buddy!” Officer Ronald Peterson (Adam Driver) in a scene from writer/director Jim Jarmusch’s THE DEAD DON’T DIE, a Focus Features release. Credit: Frederick Elmes / Focus Features © 2019 Image Eleven Productions, Inc.

THE BACK STORY: The small town of Centerville, Pennsylvania (population 700 and change) is a quiet burg. Chief of Police Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray) is used to the sleepy little town, as is his second-in-command Officer Ronald Peterson and fellow officer Minerva “Mindy” Morrison (Chloë Sevingy). While he occasionally has to deal with calls from local farmer Frank Miller (Steve Buscemi) about Hermit Bob (Tom Waits), Cliff is able to enjoy his days usually grabbing coffee and donuts at the diner where Fern (Eszter Balint) and Lily (Rosal Colon) work and local hardware store owner Hank (Danny Glover) hangs out, chatting with local motel manager Danny Perkins (Larry Fessenden) driving past the local gas station where Bobby Wiggins (Caleb Landry Jones) can be found reciting horror movie knowledge with Dean (RZA). Then again, the town has plenty to talk about since new mortician Zelda Winston (Tilda Swinton) has proven herself to be quite the character given her style of dress, her voice and … Just about everything else about her.

But once local news reports start to talk about the possible effects of fracking throwing the earth off its axis, extended periods of daylight become a regular thing and … Oh yeah, people start getting murdered in the most grisly of ways, it seems as if only explanation can be made: The dead are now walking the earth … And they refuse to stay dead.
THE REVIEW: A zombie movie for people who don’t like zombie movies or a movie that zombie movie fans will probably be bored by, The Dead Don’t Die is a satirical take on a genre that has seemingly run its course. Problem is, given its slow pace, extended scenes that don’t need to be anywhere near as long as they are and a few plot points that are either too silly even for a satire or just aren’t explained at all in a way the average moviegoer will appreciate, The Dead Don’t Die will either live or die with each person that sees it.Poking fun at how easily people set themselves up in zombie movies and occasionally breaking the fourth wall with humorous results, The Dead Don’t Die also fails to do anything out of the ordinary, feeling at times like a snarky homage to and the very type of zombie films it looks to skewer. Whereas Murray is the old grizzled veteran that should have quit as time passed him by eons ago, Driver shines as the young “ok, this is how it is now let’s roll” male lead who is smarter than everyone around him. Likewise, Sevingy is the definition of a screaming, scared female character while Swinton delivers on the fearless potential savior/absolute weirdo with a secret that could ONLY exist in a world like this.

Likewise, while some may revel in his apparent message of consumerism, writer/director Jim Jarmusch’s 12th feature-length film does what he traditionally has been known to do: Explore, exploit and ultimately polarize. While some will revel in the various subtle subtext exploration of the zombie genre and the roles actors play within them before suffering their ultimate fates, plenty will simply the see the film as a lot of waiting around for something to happen with a few funny moments … That ultimately ends in the same place as a majority of zombie movies but in less entertaining fashion. Yes, there will be genuinely funny moments … Coupled with a LOT of “seen this before” and “yeah, I get it but … meh” moments.

At 118 minutes in length, one could make a strong argument that cutting at least 20 of them would immensely help the film’s pacing and storytelling to make sure the audience’s enthusiasm for the story doesn’t fade. Then again, that’s not Jarmusch’s style; it’s a take the good with the bland or leave it approach. When it works, it works well to produce laughter and an appreciation for what he is trying to do; at worst, it’s just another zombie movie relying on its actors’ talents to compensate for a lack of storytelling and/or ambitious storytelling that falls short of the mark it aspires to hit. Again, this is Jarmusch’s style, so you’ll either find The Dead Don’t Die to be exactly what the zombie genre has been missing or at the very least appreciate it for what it is … Or absolutely be bored by it as much many Walking Dead fans have been with the show’s latter seasons (or that less inspired Fear the Walking Dead spinoff).

And while The Dead Don’t Die, it certainly seems like this film is ready for the genre to do so – and it’s willing to do its part to make sure that happens sooner than later.

Corner Kitchen 6 course Argentinian Wine Dinner

June 14, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

On Sunday, June 23rd Corner Kitchen will open its doors to host a multi-course wine dinner featuring wines from Argentina’s iconic winery, Bodega Catena Zapata.

Bodega Catena Zapata, is a historic family winery,  currently managed by third and fourth generation vintners Nicolás and his daughter Laura Catena. Nicolás Catena Zapata is known as the man who revolutionized Argentine wine in the 1980’s, by focusing primarily on quality, and spearheading the re-entrance of Malbec – the French varietal that had been almost completely forgotten by the rest of the world – into the world of wine.

The iconic Catena family winery, a rock-clad pyramid nestled in the foothills of the Andes mountains, produces wine from five estate vineyards. Special lots within the family’s high altitude vineyards – Angelica, La Piramide, Domingo, Adrianna and Angelica Sur – are the essence of the Catena wines.

Advance reservations are required, and based on the history of special events hosted by co-owners Jack and Natalie Skilliter, this event is sure to sell out! You may reserve your tickets online here.  Tickets run $65 per person (not inclusive of tax or gratuity).
