Casting Call for Dayton Fashion Week to be held at De’Lish Cafe

January 10, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Kyle Haggerty

“I know talent when I see it. You either have it or you don’t. It’s that simple.” Those are the words of MTV’s Made coach, runway coach extraordinaire and Executive Producer of Dayton Fashion Week Kyle Haggerty—and on February 25, 2012 you will get your chance to prove if you have what it takes to rip the runway at the official Casting Call for DFW! It will take place at De’Lish Cafe –located at 139 N. Main Street in Downtown Dayton from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Models must arrive by 10:00 a.m. and have two recent photos; one full body shot and one head shot with your measurements and contact information on the back of each. Models with previous experience should bring your current portfolio.

Female models must be at least 5’8 without heels and wear a women’s size 0-4. Male models must be at least 5’10 and wear a suite size 40-44. Few exceptions will be made. Models must be at least 15 years of age–participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present–Mature models are welcomed. If you don’t fit into the height and size restrictions fret not because you still have two other opportunities to participate in DFW via the Dayton Fashion Week Magazine Cover Model Search and you can audition to be one of the local hosts to cover DFW for Inside Couture Television which airs in Miami Florida for NBC affiliate Channel 6. Information regarding these two casting calls will be announced at a later date.

If you’re wondering what to expect during this casting call, it’s simple–for starters, you will be auditioning in front of me, along with the CEO and Founder of Dayton Fashion Week Junda Morris-Kennedy, the Director of Makeup Angelica Ross, and there may be a surprise judge in the building (but you didn’t hear that from me). Be prepared to walk the runway and answer a few questions about yourself. Our job is to pick the best models and send their information to the designers who will make the final decision on who gets to walk for them.

As far as preparation for casting calls is concerned, I can honestly say that in my 20 years in the industry I’ve seen it all and I’ve made a lot of mistakes in preparing for them. However, I’ve learned from my mistakes and I’m going to share a few pointers with you so that you will arrive ready to shine!

Tip #1 Your Pictures

I CAN NOT EMPHASIS THIS ENOUGH–PROFESSIONAL PICTURES ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS CASTING CALL–or any casting calls for that matter! Your pictures should be simple–ladies you should be wearing little to no makeup, your hair should be pulled back. Men you should be clean shaven.

Your head shot should be a close up photo of your face. Smiling is optional but if you choose not to smile in your photo please take the advice of Tyra and smile with your eyes–we don’t want to see any mug shots! This pic should also be taken with you looking straight into the camera.

The full body shot should include a head to toe view of you. Do not go out and buy a new outfit–your clothing should be simple no logos, bright colors, or wild and crazy prints; this applies to both male and female models. Your outfit should be fitted but flattering to your body type. Shoes are optional. You should be standing. Its ok to be a little creative for this shot; by this I mean you can have your hands to your side, one or both hands on your hips, you can tilt your head for a profile shot of your face, and etc…but no over the top posing. The same rules for your appearance in your photos should be applied during the casting call as well.

Tip #2 Be Prepared To Stand

Ladies please BRING a pair of 3” heels to walk in—emphasis on BRING! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shown up to casting calls or Go-See’s wearing heels and ended up having to stand for hours. By the time it was my turn to be seen by the casting agent—I could barely walk and let me tell you– hobbling down the runway with a grimaced look on your face is not a good look on anyone and it’s not going to land you any jobs! So it’s ok to arrive in some flat comfortable shoes. If you’ve never worn heels before practice makes perfect–start practicing your catwalk in the shoes that you plan on wearing for the casting call now. Guys, you have no clue just how good you have it; the only thing that we ask of you is to not wear gym shoes when it’s your turn to walk!

Tip #3 Diva’s and Divo’s Need Not Apply

Attractive and talented models get turned down for jobs every day because they have poor attitudes or they’re not coachable. I’ve attended casting calls where the client or casting agent was right in the waiting room with the other models and never said a word to anyone about whom they were; they mingled, sat back and observed. Sadly, I’ve seen some models be really rude and unaware of whom they were speaking too–needless to say they weren’t cast. Please don’t be this person!

Tip #4 Be Yourself

We can tell the real from the fake–and we want to see your real personality. You might not be right for the runway but you never know what opportunities may come your way as a result of this casting call. Finally, don’t worry about the next person, February 25, 2012 is all about you and we can’t wait to meet you! If you have any questions, please email me at caressab@daytonfashionweek.com.

SoMoLo is here, are you ready?

January 5, 2012 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

If you thought 2011 was the year for social, you were (partly) wrong.  2012 has barely begun and already boasts to top last year’s record with social media engagement and take it to the next level.  This year, it’s about what some may know as
With tablet sales majorly increasing over the holiday season with the launch of Kindle Fire, more people than ever have access to the internet and applications than ever before.  Marketers and retailers are trying to get our attention at every click of the mouse.  And we’re willing to engage – as long as we come out with the benefits.SoMoLo – social, mobile, local.  2012 means social needs to be accessible from anywhere and anytime and remain relevant to the user.

How do you make sure you’re receiving what you want? That takes a bit of planning.  For starters, check what email lists you’re subscribed to, what apps have access to your accounts, and what information you’re putting on the world wide web.  This will help make sure that advertisers see only what you want them to see, and in return, you see what you want to see.

Next, seek out local businesses that you frequent – or wish to frequent – and see what specials or offers they may have.  The best app to use is something like Yelp or Foursquare.  Both apps give you a chance to explore your area and see what specials are available through your tablet or smartphone.

Finally, if you don’t have a smartphone yet, fear not.  You can still use the search option on any social media site to find out about your local area.  Follow them on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest updates.  You’ll be surprised at the abundance of information (and deals!) you can get – and it’s all right at the touch of your fingertips.

January 3, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

So what do you get when you combine the love for fashion with the love for the City of Dayton…?  You get city’s first ever Dayton Fashion Week!  In July 2012, the City of Dayton will be in the international spotlight by playing host to internationally known designers and models – and DaytonMostMetro.com will be bringing you the exclusive!  My name is Caressa Brown, and I am the Director of Operations for Dayton Fashion Week.  First, a bit about myself: I am a 20 year veteran of the modeling industry, signing my first professional contract at the age of 12.  Since then I’ve had contract offers with Click (Atlanta) and smaller markets, I’ve been a regional semi-finalist in the International Elite Model Look Competition, and after taking some time off I’ve been freelancing as a model for the past couple of years. Outside of the modeling industry, I am a graduate of Wright State University and a Community Voices Producer for 91.3 FM WYSO.

Dayton Fashion Week is being headed up by industry insider Junda Morris Kennedy who recently relocated to the Dayton area when her husband was transferred to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Junda has been an organizer and event planner for several well respected international Fashion Weeks including British Columbia, Baltimore, Miami, and the granddaddy of them all – the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York!  Upon her arrival to the Miami Valley, Junda quickly recognized Dayton’s potential and has a deep respect for our city’s artistic and innovative past and present with the hopes of making Dayton a future fashion capital!  And the future is looking really bright for Dayton Fashion Week, with sponsors like Milani Cosmetics, Buckeye Vodka, DaytonMostMetro.com, Elite Hair Academy, Beaute Box, and De’Lish Cafe coming on board!

Not only will Dayton Fashion Week be highlighting international designers, five will be making their international debuts during the 2012 London Fashion Week!  We will be hosting several industry related seminars and we’ll be bringing in other industry insiders like international runway coach Kyle Haggerty and the Director of New York Couture Week and designer Andres Aquino.   Dayton Fashion Week will be featured on Inside Couture TV ( based out of Miami, FL) and they will be looking for a local host to cover DFW for them so you’ll definitely want to check back soon for more details about the upcoming casting calls which will be held at De’Lish Café starting in February.

33 Things I’ve Learned in 33 Years – A Look Back…

January 2, 2012 By Shana Lloyd Leave a Comment

I just celebrated my 33rd Birthday this past New Year’s Eve. Over the course of the month of December I took a moment or two to reflect back on all that I have learned through the years. The lessons were a big hit on Facebook, so I figured I would compile them for my first post of 2012. Enjoy. Life is meant to be lived.

 33 Things I’ve Learned in 33 Years…

There’s no greater love then a Parent’s. You’ll wonder often why they make the decisions they do…but its usually in your best interest. You realize as you grow as a person they are too and that no matter what, through whatever…they will always love you.

Friends will come and go and those relationships teach you…they shape you. You fight, you hurt, you smile and have the best times of your life. Friends come and go…but those memories last a lifetime.

The people who say they’ll never hurt you sometimes hurt you the most. The guy who says he’s not that guy sometimes ends up being that guy. Its taught me that actions really do speak louder than words.

It’s normal to want to impress someone you like, but there is a line. Never change who you are because you think it will improve your chances with someone you care about. Be yourself and always, because the right person will love the real you. Irrational hot mess, goofball, brilliant and successful..whatever the case or your mood on any given day.. the right person will find all of you, the real you… stimulating.

Mean people suck.

Confident doesn’t mean you have to be the center of attention all the time. Confidence is being able to step out of the spotlight and still stand your own…still have substance. Confidence in a woman, is one of the most sexy and alluring characteristics. Unfazed by her surroundings always knowing who’s within.

Everything in life is a lesson. Everything.

No one is normal.

The first step to moving forward in life, is to let go of the things that weigh you down.

The thrill isn’t in the chase. Let go of chasing what’s wrong and let what’s right find you.
Your past may be blemished, but your future is a blank slate…never deny yourself a second chance.

Resolutions are dumb. Waiting until the end of one year to decide you’re doing something differently the following is a long time to realize you’re doing some things wrong. Challenge yourself every day to be better, not just a week before New Years Eve.

People will hurt you but more often than not, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them, or who they are. Jay-Z said it best, “You gotta, get that, dirt off your shoulders

Often things we want in life are easier to attain than we believe.

It takes one tiny step to embark on something you’ve been holding back on..and the only thing stopping you is YOU.

You don’t have to eat everything on your plate.

The Golden Rule is a great one to live by. Reciprocity.

First dates are awkward.

When you’re young, boys look at your boobs mostly. When you get older they still do, but the right ones dig your brains as well.

Star Wars is WAY better than Star Trek

Nerds are sexy.

Success …really is a mind state.

Arrogance is the most unattractive quality in anyone.

God Listens.

The truth will always surface, no matter how hard you try to conceal it.

No matter how many times you ask, boys will never put the toilet seat down.

It’s okay to leave the house in sweats, it really is..just always have lipgloss.

Fashion can be your saving grace when you’re feeling down.

Can your worries in life and let the wind take you where it wants.

After your first kiss, …you realize boys are pretty awesome after all.

Life is a journey without guidelines, a map, or TIMELINE. It’s what you make of it and the only person’s expectations you should live up to are your own.

THE BEST THINGS REALLY DO COME TO THOSE who wait.

and my final and most valuable lesson..

Whatever you believe, whatever you dream..whatever you desire to do, do so with your whole heart. Never ever let go, never let anyone tell you can’t or won’t be able to do anything. All things are possible. There will be ups and downs but always stand tall, chin up and smile at the world..especially when it’s difficult. In my weakest moments I’ve shined the most. If ALL that I have had to endure in life is what lead me here…then I wouldn’t take a single second back.

Where the money won’t be in 2012

January 2, 2012 By Ria Delight Megnin Leave a Comment

Plenty of Dayton-area folks couldn’t tell you where tiny Alpha, Ohio is. It includes about six blocks of Beavercreek between 35 and Dayton-Xenia Road, and has a population of less than 200 people.

But a financial investing firm based there for 40 years has the top-performing Small-Cap Fund in the nation, and its fund family now manages just over $3 billion. Alpha’s James Investment Research firm is thriving in markets that haven’t seen such bad times since the Great Depression. And the team’s annual economic predictions have been spot on for years.

Why should you care? Because even if you have no interest in finance and think investing is only for evil corporate bankers (a surprisingly popular myth that I believe prevents us “commoners” from directing money to better purposes), the insights shared in Economic Outlook 2012 are worth knowing.*

The annual presentation and Q&A isn’t about what stocks to invest in and what bond markets to avoid. It’s an objective, insider perspective on the state of the world and our collective future, based on thousands of hours of proprietary research.

And it’s free.

The 45-minute Outlook covers the state of the economy and how it got here, as well as where it’s likely to go. JIR staff review the effects of government intervention, the European debt crisis, political & social turmoil at home, and Americans’ shifting attitudes toward debt, energy and employment. It’s global context for what we will literally see right here on Main Street in the months to come.

Fair warning: JIR’s conclusions and recommendations are firmly on the conservative side of the spectrum, and Mayan calendar interpretations aren’t included in this year’s report. But whether or not you have investments of your own, you’ll benefit from having an advance understanding of the major political and financial changes in the year to come.

*Disclosure: I am a friend of the James family, which is why a freelance writer & three-time Burning Man participant like me even knows about something like an Economic Outlook.

‘Dayton ready to help greet 1932’

December 29, 2011 By Ria Delight Megnin Leave a Comment

Eighty years ago, the Dayton Daily News gave the following report as Daytonians weathering the Great Depression made plans to celebrate the New Year holiday. The “clarion blasts” and “owl cars” have passed along with the heyday of hotel parties and public dances, but it’s likely their great-grandchildren will also see “many whistles made wet as usual.”

Dayton ready to help greet 1932 new year

Many public and private parties arranged for annual event

A few more hours and Dayton residents will greet a new year.

Indications Thursday were that the event which comes with the ushering in of a new cycle will be observed about as usual, with the celebrants finding their pleasure during the later hours of the evening.

All of the uptown hotels were prepared to greet little 1932 in a big way, with dances holding forth in some of them and with reservations having been received for dinner parties which will last through midnight.

‘Gaiety and splendor’

At the Biltmore the custom which was established with the opening of that hotel will be pursued, that of holding a dance to which the public is invited. The management of the hotel reported Thursday that a large number of reservations have been made and that the usual scene of gaiety and splendor is expected to prevail.

At the Miami, the Van Cleve and Gibbons there will be no public dances held, although there were numerous reservations made for private parties. On the roof of the Miami a dinner party will be given by Oscar Pryor.

All of the uptown theaters have announced that special late shows will be given. Some of these will begin at 11 p.m., some at 11:30 p.m. and a few not until the magic hour has struck.

Hangovers, ’30s style

The greater portion of the reception to the new year in Dayton, however, will have its setting in private homes. With Friday, New Year’s, a holiday on which most factories, offices and stores will be closed, the celebrants will be privileged to enter into the spirit of the occasion without the dread of what must come the “morning after” when otherwise another workday would beckon.

There have been indications for the past week that the usual noisemaking devices again will be in evidence. Bells will ring, whistles sound their clarion blasts, pistols and cannon will be fired and the new year will be given the greeting common with age-old custom.

So much for discouraging drunk driving

The managements of some of the street railway companies were undecided during Thursday as to whether extended service would be given on their lines for benefit of the merrymakers. Definite announcement was made by the City Railway Co. that its latest cars would leave Third and Main sts. at the usual hour of 12:10 a.m. The Peoples Railway Co. was not certain whether owl cars would be operated and the same was true of Oakwood and Dayton Street. The last Peoples cars under regular schedule on the Main st., Valley and Cincinnati-Leo divisions leave the center of the city at 12:10 a.m. north and south. On the Oakwood line the last car departs from Third and Main sts., south at 12:34 a.m. and north, 12:10 a.m.

When dancing actually meant dancing

The various night and dinner (venues) have announced special (merri)ment at the midnight hour. These, like the hotels, have reported that they have made heavy reservations. In all of these places dancing will be the principal attraction of the evening, with floor shows prevailing in some of them.

There were no evidence, on the surface at least, of a scarcity of some of the liquid adjuncts which go with a New Year’s celebration. Reports were to the effect that, in spite of the current economic depression, demands have been in keeping with previous years since prohibition, with every indication that there will be as many whistles made wet as usual. With it, reports say, the quality will be improved over former years and at the lower prices which have prevailed for the past few months in Dayton.

Rudolph in Dayton-land

December 20, 2011 By Ria Delight Megnin Leave a Comment

On Tuesday evening, I watched the 1964 TV show “Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer” for the first time since I was 9 or 10 years old. What a time machine! For a few precious moments I was a foot shorter, my hair in tangles, wearing my scratchy pink pajamas, watching the tiny television in our basement apartment to the rhythmic creak of Mom’s rocking chair. I still love the Christmas season, and yes, I wear a Santa hat almost everywhere I go, but it took that flashback to remember just how giddy with excitement I used to be during the most magical time of the year.

The time machine took me other places, too. A time when bosses – Santa, the elf overseer, and Rudolph’s father, the lead reindeer Donner – were angry, isolated men whose wives nagged at them to eat and tried to smooth over the feathers they ruffled. A time when “good work” meant a factory job, being happy producing goods for no wages for the world. A time when only boys played sports or could get picked for Santa’s sleigh team. A time when only people of northern European ancestry were represented, even in fantasy stories.

But also a time when things were changing. Instead of raining more authoritarian abuse on their heads, Comet tells the reindeer fawns: “I’m here as your coach, but I’m also here to be your friend, right?” Not quite the note we’d hit today – I see our culture swinging back toward structured, safe authority figures as we learn the balance of compassionate leadership – but a positive step nonetheless. And the message that misfits, too, have their place, was a nice break from the monotonous Levittown mentality of the 1950s.

If I were to write a Dayton version of “Rudolph,” I’d make him the kid with the hippie hair and an artist’s vision who no one can quite understand. The Island of Misfit Toys? The latest Occupy encampment. Christmastown would be Stivers School for the Arts, of course, and Santa the president of the school board. As for the Abominable Snowman, instead of yanking out all his teeth and shoving him off a cliff, we’ll find out he was only chasing people and roaring because he had a bad cavity, and good old Hermey the Elf Dentist will save the day by figuring it out and helping him feel better.

Yeah, this version’s not likely to delight a nation of children for decades to come! So I’ll stick to my day job. Happily, the generation that grew up on Rudolph helped make it possible for me to be a freelance writer instead of a factory worker, and I’m free to play with both reindeer and misfits. Marvelous misfits like you! How would things look in your version of “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Daytonian”?

Have Yourself a Very Social Christmas.

December 15, 2011 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

Christmas music is in the air, the stores are run amuck with frantic last minute shoppers, and there’s an awful lot of melted wanna-be snow falling from the sky.  There’s no doubt that we’re coming close to the biggest holiday of the year.  What makes this time of year better than the rest is that just about everyone is overcome with the spirit of giving – which is where social, and social good can come into play.

Here are some ideas for integrating social good into your holiday strategy:

  1. Use social media to give shout-outs to your favorite people or places.  Word-of-mouth is best compliment one can receive, and putting that on social makes it publicized word-of-mouth.
  2. Send a social holiday greeting.  Use sites like JibJab to send fun cards that you can personalize and then share through social media sites.
  3. Give a social media gift.  Retweet someone’s tweet, comment or like a Facebook post, give a LinkedIn recommendation – all FREE ideas.  Or if you want to spend some cash:  buy a personal domain for someone’s blog, buy a smartphone or tablet, or get your unemployed friend a premium LinkedIn Job Seeker account.
With just over a week until Santa comes to town, there isn’t much time left to prepare for Christmas.  But what you can do, is try one of my tips above, and help to  spread some holiday cheer.
Happy Holidays Dayton!

Facebook the Money-Maker?

November 30, 2011 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of talk this week about Facebook going public in 2012.  The social networking company is going to valued around $100 billion dollars, according to The Wall Street Journal.  In a time when some mainstream Internet companies are filing their IPOs (LinkedIn and Groupon most recently, it seems almost fate that Facebook would follow suit.

So what does this mean for you as a potential investor?

If you’ve got the funds to throw down for a piece of the action, I’d consider it.  Facebook doesn’t appear to be coming down anytime soon in its reign as one of the top web entities to exist.  On the other hand, it’s possible that the Facebook IPO could suffer from “Groupon Syndrome” – where the highly anticipated value experienced a down fall as stock prices dropped for multiple days.

As a user of the site, it could mean good things as far as user experience and privacy goes because of the increase in stakeholders for the company.  I’m betting that the average user won’t notice any changes.  But, as Facebook continues to find more ways to make money, we may end up paying the biggest price of all.

Do you think Facebook should IPO?

Can I Get My Tab?

Ambition and Disappointment

The summer was full of both but I did learn a few very valuable lessons. Evenings  in dresses thinking tonight’s gonna be the night and those little  Laws of Attraction (while very true) that send us into an irrational frenzy. We always want what we can’t have and I’ve been trying for years to understand this phenomenon.  Deep down inside I know exactly what I want in a relationship, what I want from a first date to the third and fourth, yet every once and a while I find what is seemingly a dud and consider them to be more. It’s a real problem. A lot of my nights start with high hopes and while most end well, others are a huge disappointment. For the life of me I can never understand why I’ve spent so much time pining and crushing over some, when ultimately I’m left scratching my head wondering, “what I was thinking?”

The Summer Crush of 2011

Since the summer, my friends have comically and aggressively banned me from the Oregon District because of my love interest in beards, bartenders and musicians. Was it their liqueur mixing, social, music or communication skills that did it?  I don’t really know but for a while there I found myself eyeing a few very unlikely suspects,  and I (like my friends) became worried. I think my “want” to meet someone had somehow clouded my judgment about what’s really good for me… what I deserve. There was one guy that for months, (I may have even mentioned in a column or two), I pined over ridiculously. When I finally got the opportunity, I was a little sick to my stomach afterwords frankly. That’s no exaggeration. Which brings me to my point.

Do Desperate Times Really Have to Call for Desperate Measures?

No. Why do we feel desperate when we’re single for a long time? I know that I personally started to think it would never happen for me, that I was being too picky and so the first guy to take notice to me in a long time was all of a sudden all I could think about. I had somehow forgotten the months of him ignoring me prior too.  Nothing anyone said to me, (all obvious and valid points) made any difference to me. The guy was a total flake, lacked personality and had low self- esteem but I thought he was dreamy based on a few conversations where we connected on a few topics.  At best, he was friend material but certainly not a candidate for between the sheets or long-term commitment.  I had more intense kisses in the 8th grade and better conversations with strangers in a checkout line.  For months I pined over nothing because I narrowed in on one opportunity instead of opening my eyes to a world of opportunity around me.

Never Settle.

We all get lonely from time to time. Long-term singles like myself who want to really find someone go through a pattern of settling I think. You think, “sure why not” a lot more than usual. You look past things that ordinarily would annoy you. You end up going home with your “ultimate” crush thinking it’s gonna be a hot night finally when really you’d rather be home playing scrabble after 5 minutes alone with him. It happens. I’ve starting writing down what I really want in a relationship, in a “mate” and what exactly I don’t want. It’s a good reminder in times like this. If you’re looking for a good time and not a long time, sure try on a few duds for size but never forget what it is you really want, want will make you happy.  That experience really taught me a lot about myself (some good and some bad) but I did snap out of it and quickly.  It’s all a learning experience though and how, I believe, we get closer to finding exactly what it is we really want. You can’t put a time limit on it though and you can’t settle before you get there. That person we’re meant to be with is out there and when the time is right it will happen, and you won’t be playing scrabble. Until then, live a little. Be adventurous, not like wearing white after Labor Day but taking chances and have fun.

He could still have a beard, be bartender or a musician or anything for that matter. I wanted to add that point to avoid any unnecessary assumptions. It’s not what a person does or has that I’m looking for, it’s really all about who they are and whether or not we fit. A lot has changed since then. Most importantly, me.

I’d be lying if I said it stopped there. The summer was a riot. More next week.

Four reasons I’m staying in D8N

November 26, 2011 By Ria Delight Megnin Leave a Comment

It’s pretty much universal. No matter who I talk to – lifelong D8N residents, far-flung friends and family, and anybody living or working here now – when I tell them I moved to Dayton from California, they ask: “Why??”

It’s complicated. “I followed a boy,” I’ll say. I needed out of my evening-shift job covering & editing & posting stories on Mexican gangland killings and car crashes and other horrors for a small-staff California newspaper. It took a wonderful Dayton native to come along, sweep me off my feet, and help me  take the leap into freelancing from a new home base: the Miami Valley.

The reasons I stayed? When that boy and I decided to be “just friends” and I could have gone anywhere – Portland, San Francisco, Austin, Boston, Berlin, Beijing – I needed some time to save up cash. After a whirlwind year of travel adventures and hard (but unpaid) work helping lead a camp at the annual Burning Man festival, I also needed time to focus on building my business.

And then I started noticing four very good reasons to stay in Dayton.

1) The cost of living. Way, way cheaper than any of those other cities.

2) The weather. I grew up in Massachusetts, and survived coastal California’s months of fog and ridiculous lack of decent thunderstorms, and Dayton is an awesome blend of what’s best about both regions. We’ve got actual seasons. We’ve got summer storms and winter snows. But neither the heat nor the cold are as vicious or lasting as what I knew back East.

3) The opportunities. Well, good-paying jobs are still tough to come by in southwest Ohio, but freelancers have clients around the world. And I have a distinct advantage: I don’t need to charge New York prices! The real opportunities in Dayton are its incredible business and arts networks: thousands of small businesses and nonprofits and churches committed to making the lives of this region’s people better, as well as hundreds of museums and parks and libraries that reflect a deep, rich culture worth investing in.

4) All my new friends. Artists. Churchgoers. Grad students. Actors. Investors. Young families. Chefs. CEOs. Dancers. Writers. You don’t have to live in San Francisco to meet awesome people, after all!

What makes you glad to have the D8N region in your headlights when it’s time to head home?

But I am the Good Kind…

November 20, 2011 By Shana Lloyd Leave a Comment

There is something worse than losing everything, the feeling that you’ll never have it again. What is everything though?  It’s been a short while since last I wrote and while I know I’m getting closer to realizing who I truly am, I’m still just trying to figure things out. The world around us is changing and as such, I think women are evolving. Our goals have changed and who we are is more defined by our own perception of ourselves and not what those around us may think. Our circumstances affect us less and our strength at times seems limitless. At least for myself, this is the case.

Growing up I remember fantasizing about things I’m sure most young women do. I envisioned my life being “normal”, that I would get married and have a family and that I would do it all within a reasonable time frame. Never once really questioning what normal was and when a reasonable time frame was. I can recall a conversation with friends about a decade ago when I said, “I will never be that girl, 30 something and single, going on one disastrous date after the other.” No I would never be that girl. Well, here I am. That girl.

The irony of it all is that now, a decade later and after almost 3 years of being single I’ve found that being that girl has been a remarkable learning experience as well as fun. One of which I wouldn’t trade for that normal life in it’s normal time frame.  I’m comfortable with who I am even if it changes from day to day, which it does.  At times I do find it increasingly difficult to reconcile the past with my future, but each day I feel myself getting closer to the person I know I am meant to be, no matter how uncomfortable it makes the people the around me.

My life has been an adventure, happenings that are both audacious and poignant. Some of which at times have left me questioning everything, but never myself – and that is progress.  Toxic bachelors and nice guys I don’t want have all crossed my path. Horizontal nights and being okay with a good time (not a long time) have all helped me to reach what I believe is just the surface of this new self awareness.  There is no true story about sex, love and relationships and it means something different to everyone. There is no “normal.” What fits for you may not be normal and you have to be okay with that.

There was a time when all I wanted was to fit in, to be part of this “normal” that everyone was experiencing. I find myself less inspired by the draw of some imaginary elite social scene or the picture perfect life and more inspired by myself. When you start to be okay with who you are, you start to see that not everything is as it seems and those happy people around you are also sometimes struggling inside… struggling to be normal.  I’ve realized the first step to uncovering all of my dreams is listening. Not to the noise around me judging and trying to sway me in a certain direction, but to myself .. to my own desires..to my own passions. This direction is where I’ve found happiness.

I’m okay with those indelible moments of my past because I realize we really have to go through life changing events to change for the better.  Fulfillment has many shades and what we learn on our way to it is that sometimes it’s not what you used to fantasize about. In fact, it may be something entirely different.

In hindsight, loss, pain and sadness are where the journey began. Something happens in despair. There’s a point where you look within and realize what happens next is entirely up to you. Love is truly something that is found in time … but the first place to find it is in your own heart. That is where your journey should lead you. Loving and accepting yourself.

At times it seems like I am the only female who feels the way I do about all of the above. I see women daily who wrap themselves up in a relationship so much so they’ve forgotten who they are and all those around them, it’s disturbing to watch. Would love to know that there are more singles out there who see things as I do. While I love to entertain my friends with my wild stories and make them blush with my outrageous antics, sometimes I wish I wasn’t so different.

I’m not the conventional woman. I will never be a Stepford Wife.  I will never live a cookie cutter life. I’m independent, strong and uncontrollably wild at times. I’m not looking to be swept off of my feet but odds are my sparkling wit and insatiable appetite for fun in life will sweep you off of yours. My life is far from normal and my future is open ended. I may not be the right kind, but I believe I am the good kind and eventually when the time is right someone will find me.

About those adventures from this past year, I plan on sharing them without a filter. Stay tuned.

Learn something new about.me

November 17, 2011 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

With the constant explosion of social media sites and networks launching left and right, the last thing anyone is thinking about is trying to learn a new one, right?  Well, I’m going to prove you wrong.  There is a new (sort of) category of social sites out there that actually help you to kind of manage your social media interactions.  They serve as personal home page for either you or your business.  These sites are about.me and flavors.me.

Why should you use one of these sites? For me, it all comes back to personal branding.  The page serves as another spot for you to put your “brand keywords” into that ultimately get indexed by Google and bring your PageRank up – AND because it’s linked to your social accounts, that almost guarantees that if you use it correctly, there is no doubt that it will help bump you up higher on the list when you Google yourself.

Here’s a nice article from TechZulu about the differences between the two sites.  The net is, one has a cleaner look while the other makes a bit of money off of your quest for complete customization.  Setting up your personal page is pretty straightforward.  Sign up for an account, then walk your way through each step to customize.  Each site offers you a place to include a biography, connect to your social media accounts, and add a background (custom or stock).  It does take some playing around to get the perfect look.

So what are you waiting for?  Get started building your page now, then post it here in the comments for everyone to see!

It’s 11-11-11. Have you talked with a crystal skull lately?

November 11, 2011 By Ria Delight Megnin Leave a Comment

Mayan elder’s cross-country pilgrimage involved visit to Serpent Mound

Late on the afternoon of Oct. 29, Mayan elder Hunbatz Men carefully climbed the first steps of a steel observation tower overlooking the ancient Serpent Mound in southeastern Ohio.

The site was Men’s second stop on a cross-country sacred journey this fall, leading from Manhattan on Oct. 26 to its culmination today in Los Angeles, on 11-11-11.

“I’m very happy to see you here,” Men told the crowd of about 600. “We see something wrong with this crazy time, this crazy civilization. Mother Earth is in a bad situation. But many of the people here with the crystal skulls, they are bringing the light and the knowledge. Today, we bring the cosmic knowledge.”

The crystal skulls are famous in New Age circles as ancient Mayan or Aztec tools, with ancient secrets programmed into their crystalline matrices by humans or, some say, aliens. The skulls are expected to release their information as humanity enters a new era of harmony. Scientists and archaeologists say the skulls they’ve examined can be traced to German workshops of the late 1800s, and don’t reflect the artistic styles of the South American civilizations. Still, thousands of believers gather every year for ceremonies honoring the skulls and connecting with fellow visionaries of a more peaceful future.

Hunbatz Men works closely with The Cosmic Mysteries School of Kentucky to engage people in that visioning process. His tour is timed to coincide with other New Age consciousness-raising events celebrating the alignment of today’s date in the Gregorian calendar, and involves teachings on Mayan prophecies.

Rainbow of perfect timing

Gesturing to the winding, grassy curves of the quarter-mile-long snake effigy built some 1,000 years ago, Men said, “The snake, for the Mayans, is the symbol of the Milky Way, the symbol of cosmos. Coming back again is cosmic culture. We need to be happy for that. Peace is coming in that way.”

Hundreds of voices cheered as Men stepped back down to lead a ceremonial trek around the mound. Carrying smoking bundles of sage, playing rattles and drums, wearing sacred garb and chanting, he and 13 guardians of the crystal skulls led a winding line of people bundled against October’s chill. As they rounded the ancient village site at the open mouth of the snake, a brief sprinkle of rain passed over the plateau and a breeze kicked golden leaves across the sky. A few minutes later, a rainbow – the Mayan symbol of renewal and divine favor – emerged in the east.

“When we saw the rainbow, I just couldn’t help but break into tears,” said Roxana of Nashville, Tenn. “There’s a lot of nature traditions that say a light, gentle rain with the sun is a blessing from the heavens, a reminder of the divine within.”

The “divine within” and “worldwide transformation” were the predominant themes at the gathering, the second stop on Men’s cross-country pilgrimage with the crystal skulls. Besides an early afternoon teaching on the changes happening around the Earth, visitors and guardians led drum circles and dances, invited people to touch and pray with the crystal skulls, sang Native American songs and invited new connections. Seekers of all ages were drawn to the event, from hoop spinners in colorful garb to parents taking part in drum circles to white-haired veterans of the ’60s. Many traveled long distances, including one group of 15 from Cleveland, more than four hours to the north.

‘Absolute joy’

“Supposedly, the Mayan calendar ended yesterday, and this is the first day of whatever else,” said Satya, one of the Cleveland group, referring to the Oct. 28 conclusion of the ninth and final cycle described in the Mayan calendar. “The combination of the Serpent Mound and the holy grounds, having a Mayan elder here with the crystal skulls, that’s why I’m here.”

Mallory, also of the Cleveland group, said she came for the experience of “downloading the absolute joy of the energy of the skulls, while being in community. People are awakening more and more to themselves every day – how we can live, and how we’re choosing to live.”

What that life will look like depends on how much attention we pay to the natural energies around us, Men said as the group came to rest around a tree surrounded with the crystal skulls. Facing the setting sun, Men led the gathering in several minutes of toning “eee” – “This is the word for Maya to activate the body” – and “awhll” – “This is the word for the other dimension, to draw energy in.”

Symbol of sacred knowledge

“In this sacred place, the initiation is ready,” Men said. “The Christians say the snake is the devil. No! It’s the symbol of knowledge. We’re entering a New Age, not a darkness, not a time of bad ending. The Maya don’t believe this. Remember the spirit of the tree, the spirit of the cloud. The rainbow came in to move your seven powers. You’re going to wake up.”

The Cosmic Mysteries School of Kentucky invited donations and prayers, encouraging participants to ground in the positive energies of the gathering in order “to let Earth know we’re remembering the sacred knowledge.” For more information, visit www.cosmicmysteries.com/journey.

Follow the chatter

November 2, 2011 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

In preparation for an upcoming New Media Dayton meeting next week, where Keri Jaehnig (Idea Girl Media) and I will be speaking to small business owners and individuals alike about social media tools, I wanted to give the readers here at Dayton Most Metro a little preview of what can be expected and get some feedback about what you would like to hear about.

I don’t care about social, so why should I learn about the tools? For starters, social media is about more than just logging into Facebook or Twitter and checking out what your friends have to say.  For the individual, social is about helping you find new interests through your peers and reconnecting with old friends.  For the business owner, it’s about discovering new insights about your customers and ways in which you can provide the best service to them.

One tool that I would like to share ahead of the meeting is called TweetChat.  This site allows Twitter users to track and follow hashtags.  By following a hashtag, you can see all the activity produced by a particular event.  Tweetchat lets you respond and contribute to the conversation in an easier way than using Twitter.com.

I would encourage all of you to follow along next Friday (11/11) at 9:30am to the #NMDayton meeting and see what other tools we are going to share, and if you can stop by the meeting, we’d love to meet you!

Facebook Privacy 101

October 18, 2011 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

Facebook has notoriety in messing with privacy options.  Through the past few years, there have been numerous changes and additions that have most people wondering, “Who is looking at my information?”  With so many options, it’s difficult to know which ones are the right ones to change.  One wrong click can be the difference between having a “locked-down” profile and one that is open for the world (literally!) to see.  Here are my top 3 tips to ensuring security and peace of mind for your Facebook account.

First, get friendly with the official privacy settings. In this area, you will see a list to set your privacy as one of 3 things: public (everyone), friends only, or custom.  By choosing one of the options at the top, it will make a blanket change to all the areas listed below (how you connect, how tags work, apps and websites, audience for past posts, and blocked people and apps).  Each of those sub areas also have their own set of settings, so be sure to look in there as well.

Next, check out your profile privacy settings. When you go to edit your profile, you will see a little dropdown that allows you to choose how you want to share each piece of information.  It used to be that there was one setting for each option (education, interests, etc.) but now, Facebook offers you pretty much complete control on each item.  The settings in here will affect not only how your friends view your profile, but also how you show up in Facebook search.  Another new feature, noted at the top of the edit page, is the ability to “view profile as” a specific friend or the public – so you can see the changes you make along the way.

Finally, your status update is the last place where there are settings to be aware of. The default setting for who sees your updates are what you set in the “Official” privacy settings.  However, you do have the option to change this to broadcast an update to a particular group of people (a Facebook list or group) or to make it public to the world.

After reading this post, I suggest you go back, take a look at what your personal settings are and adjust them as needed.  With all the security issues that happen beyond our control, this is one thing you can do to prevent any information from getting out that you might not want published.
