A dream came true yesterday for Jen and Ian Bock! After 10 years of dreaming and fantasizing about owning a brewery yesterday they bought Sojourners in Centerville! It was opened in Feb of 2020 by husband and wife Jeff and Laura Marjamaa, but they decided it was time to sell. It will take some time to transition it, but eventually it will become Bock Family Brewing.
The location will be called Bock Hall, which is a family-friendly celebration hall with European Old-World inspired ales and lagers with a comforting, fun atmosphere for all ages. They will have a German themed main hall, a Nordic lounge, and an Irish room with a kids corner. The hall is equipped with a pool table, shuffle board, ping pong, foosball, jukebox, a 10,000 arcade game system, a Wii, coloring books, five TVs, a kids play house and more.
They plan to hold events such as trivia, BockFest, stein holding and perfect pour competitions; polka, Irish step, and salsa lessons; costume contests around Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween, kids crafts and contests, and more. They will also be starting a Stein Club Membership for customers.
Ian has been a homebrewer for 15 years and has 23 awards from various competitions, including a Best In Show, 4 Gold medals and 6 Silver Medals. Jen has been brewing for 3 years thanks to Ian’s insistence, but already has two Silver Medals. They’ve been encouraged to start a brewery for years from family and friends and are seizing this amazing opportunity we have been given. She was a brand ambassador for the alcohol industry for 10 years as well as a bartender and front-of-house bar manager for 4 years before she became a civil lawyer.

For the inaugural Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Queer Beer Festival, we’re seeking a talented individual to design some art. We want you to decide what it looks like to be a powerful queer person participating in the craft beer industry or culture. Is it a special beer brewed for Pride? Is it people coming together to brew a beer? Or, is it just a colorful expression of drinking? It can be a design, illustration, or even an inspiring poem. For the Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Pour Out Your Pride Design Contest show us your best stuff to help us celebrate a resounding, yet often unrepresented community in craft beer*.
From the submissions, the Hop Culture and Samuel Adams teams will choose five semi-finalist winners to have their design featured on 100 limited-edition prints. And, one grand prize winner will additionally have their design featured on 300 limited-edition, exclusive YETI Colsters generously donated by YETI. Known for their coolers built for the wild, YETI is also active in supporting a more inclusive and equitable industry. Both the posters and Colsters will be sold to the public with all proceeds donated to GLAAD, an organization rewriting the script for LGBTQ acceptance and tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue.
Additionally, the final winner will be featured on Hop Culture’s Instagram (@hopculturemag) and profiled in an exclusive editorial piece on HopCulture.com.
The Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Queer Beer Festival is an evolution of Hop Culture’s women in craft beer festival: Beers With(out) Beards. In 2018, Hop Culture’s Head of Partnerships Grace Weitz launched the festival as a part of her graduate school thesis capstone project at NYU. Over the last three years, this revolutionary festival has attracted over 3,000 attendees and 50 women-led breweries. In the same period, the event has featured 30 events aimed at celebrating the achievements of women across all aspects of the alcoholic beverage industries.
Building on the success of BW(O)B, Weitz — who identifies as queer — conceptualized Queer Beer as a way to celebrate the unique, vibrant, diverse, thriving, and often underserved queer community in beer. Additionally, Weitz wanted to showcase LGBTQ+ drinkmakers and tastemakers, express stories of empowerment from top queer-owned breweries or breweries actively supporting the queer community, and build a stronger culture of inclusivity in the beer industry.
Samuel Adams is not only one of the world’s leading independent craft breweries, but also a long-time and passionate supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. Because of this, they made the perfect partner for Hop Culture’s new event. An inclusive network of Samuel Adams and Boston Beer Company coworkers, aptly named Labels Out, recognized the importance of the festival as part of their ongoing mission to support and encourage their peers as members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.
In 2020, Samuel Adams announced its partnership with GLAAD, including a $100,000 donation to the organization committed to rewriting the script for LGBTQ+ acceptance in addition to a commitment to education and training for coworkers. The brewery launched Love Conquers All, a Pride platform created in partnership with GLAAD, inspired by Love Conquers Ale, a Blackberry Basil Lime Gose limited release brewed by and for the LGBTQ+ community. To introduce Love Conquers All, Samuel Adams created a powerful video series called Poetry of Pride, to illustrate the power of poetry as a medium and expression designed to unite communities and amplify voices. Filmed inside the historic Stonewall inn, the series featured original poetry written by Teddy Geiger and Richard Blanco, recited by notable Broadway members of the LGBTQ+ community.
All in all, Samuel Adams has made huge strides to support the queer community, and Hop Culture is honored to partner with this revolutionary brewery as the presenting sponsor for its Queer Beer Festival.
So, what does the Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Pour Out Your Pride contest look like? Here’s what you need to know.
The Hop Culture x Samuel Adams’ Pour Out Your Pride Contest is a competition asking people to submit a design, illustration, drawing, or poem that represents what it means to them to be a powerful queer person in craft beer.
This Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States or DC, age 18 or older.
Although Hop Culture is more than happy to take submissions from anyone, we respectfully ask for understanding around the idea that only those who identify as queer will be eligible to win. LGBTQ+ allies and friends are an incredibly important part of our community, but our goals for this contest are to amplify queer voices and provide a platform for a marginalized community.
To submit your design, simply post it on Instagram with the hashtag #pouroutyourpride and #contest. Then follow @samueladamsbeer and @hopculturemag to see the winners. The five-semi finalists will be announced on April 5th, 2020. The final winner will be announced on April 19th, 2021, at which point we’ll be in contact for the art files. And that’s it!
March 15th to March 31st at 11:59 PM EST – First round entries will be accepted. From there, a representative panel from Hop Culture and Samuel Adams will choose five semi-finalists.
April 5th – The five semi-finalists will be announced via Hop Culture’s Instagram page (@hopculturemag). Each of the five semi-finalists will be contacted through Instagram and sent an additional questionnaire and art release.
April 14th – Semi-finalist questionnaire due.
April 19th – Hop Culture and Samuel Adams will announce the final winner.
May TBD – The posters with the winning designs from all semi-finalists will go on sale with all proceeds donated to GLAAD!
May TBD – The YETI Colsters with the final winning design will go on sale with all proceeds donated to GLAAD!
Five semi-finalists will have their submissions displayed on Hop Culture’s Instagram (@hopculturemag) and printed on 100 limited-edition 18×24 posters that will be sold online. All proceeds from the sales of these posters will be donated to GLAAD, an organization rewriting the script for LGBTQ acceptance and tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue.
And, one lucky finalist will additionally have their winning design showcased on 300 exclusive limited-edition YETI Colsters (generously donated by YETI) that will be sold to the public prior to the festival. All of the proceeds from the Colsters will also be donated to GLAAD. Additionally, the final winner will be featured on Hop Culture’s Instagram (@hopculturemag) and profiled in an exclusive editorial piece on HopCulture.com.
In order to meet the specifications of the YETI Colster, please note that the final winning design will be printed in a single color. We still encourage you to submit a full-color design because all five semi-finalist designs will be printed in color. However, please know that while we can represent the integrity of your design in full color on social media and on the semi-finalist winning posters, we will only be able to print on the Colster in a single color.
Winners will be chosen by a representative panel from Hop Culture and Samuel Adams.

International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day is a worldwide annual event that takes place on March 8th of every year in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
It is an event open to all women working in or interested in beer to learn, network, and make friends—so join in, collaborate, enjoy brewing, enjoy the produce and try and get as many women involved as possible!
According to a Brewers Association benchmarking survey, women make up only about 7.5% of professional brewers. In order to help women advance careers in the craft beer industry, several Ohio breweries have encouraged their employees to participate in women’s brew days.
Here’s a list of beers created and brewed by women in celebration of International Women’s Day in the Miami Valley:
For their third annual International Women’s Day brew, the women of Branch & Bone Artisan Ales chose to make a mai tai IPA with lime, cara cara orange, tangerine, almonds and vanilla. Thanks, It Has Pockets Vol. 3 was also dry hopped with the Pink Boots hop blend. Cans are available for pickup and shipping today, with a draft release coming on Friday, March 5.

On Monday, March 8 from 11am – 7pm they are holding a Women’s Brew Day where the female staff of Dayton History take the helm on a batch of our historical Carillon Coriander Ale. This special Monday opening is to share the educational standpoint as the brewery is usually closed on Monday. The public is invited to come in on Monday, enjoy our ales, and engage with our female staff members and brewing team as they brew this historic Coriander Ale recipe. The recipe comes from an 1831 publication entitled “Receipts For the Husbandman and Housewife” , essentially a guide on how to properly raise a family, emphasizing the brewing of beer by the housewife as an essential role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the family. The female role as the primary brewer that dominated most history waned with the advent of the industrialization of the beer brewing process, but Dayton has boasted several female brewery owners in its past, and that has carried over into present day.

A women majority-owned brewery, N.E.W. Ales is making a West Coast Style IPA with pineapple, and calling it “Hoptaschick”! The IPA is 7.5% ABV. Born from the idea that women enjoy a mouthful of hoppy bitterness, Hoptaschick delivers just that. Featuring heavy doses of Strata and Topaz hops, then splashed with 11 pounds of pineapple per BBL, you’ll find notes of citrus and pine in perfect balance. To spread the work about women’s brew day, and to give back to the community, they had a local, female artist, Liz Paulson, draw up a design to sell as a sticker, with parts of the proceeds going to the Women’s Hope House in Middletown. They will start selling Hoptaschick when their Biergarten reopens March 26th and then they will be open Fridays 5-10 and Saturdays 4-10.

In honor of International Women’s Day the ladies of Star City Brewing have made a Spicy Honey Brown Ale which we’re calling “Honey, I’m feeling spicy.” They are going to tap their beer on Saturday the 13th, because it’s a longer, busier day and $0.50 of every pint sold on the 13th will be donated to the Artemis Domestic Violence Center of downtown Dayton.

Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale by Moeller Brew Barn just released their second annual edition. The dessert ale makes its return to both Moeller Brew Barn locations in Maria Stein and Troy, as well as retailers across 35 counties in Ohio. The local brewmaster and confectioner’s creation is made with the famous Winans Wurtles
“Winans is excited to welcome the next round of Moeller Brew Barn’s Winans brew. The first creation was really popular and represented the quality of Winans products well. We are excited to taste it soon,” stated Laurie Winans Reiser, owner of Winans Chocolates + Coffees, headquartered in Piqua, Ohio.
At 6.3% ABV, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale is full of caramel, chocolate and pecan notes and aromas. Its medium body and nutty finish make it the perfect treat as Valentine’s Day approaches.
To accommodate the day of love, the ale’s can has undergone a design refresh. The new label displays a sleek black background with a confetti of hearts and shiny, metallic red detail. Additionally, the can can be personalized with a hand-written note to loved ones. The letter has even been started for you: “You mean the Wurtle to me, and then some.”
“In 2018, we brewed the Winans Meltaway Milk Chocolate Porter, and we learned then what hand-crafting chocolates was all about. We’ve built upon our collaboration brew, and the new personalized-option can design takes it one step further,” said Nick Moeller, Moeller Brew Barn founder. “I know what I’ll be getting my wife for Valentine’s Day, and hopefully she knows what to get for me.”
Moeller Brew Barn opened its doors in Maria Stein in 2015 with a second location in Troy in 2019, while Winans has been serving Ohio for four generations. This January marks the second year that both Ohio-built companies have joined forces to create the rich and nutty, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale.

Moeller Brew Barn’s new First Edition HAY-Z Pale Ale is set to release in both Brew Barn Taprooms (Troy and Maria Stein) on Thursday, December 10. The fruity, floral and refreshing pale ale has loads of centennial, amarillo, galena and mosaic hops, along with an optimistic story in hopes of ending 2020 on a positive note. “With over 50 beers hitting the faucets, 2020 has been an experimental year. More than a dozen were the hoppy kind, my favorite. We’ve taken what we’ve learned, added a twist and are proud to announce our HAY-Z Pale Ale,” said Nick Moeller, Founder of Moeller Brew Barn.
The inspiration behind this ale’s fruity, floral flavor and visual style is The Old Farmer’s Almanac, an annual entertaining piece, plump full of predictions. As much of midwest Ohio is known for its prolific farming communities, locals can resonate with the nod to the publication. The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been published since 1792 during George Washington’s first term as president.
“Both Brew Barn locations are displayed on the can label, along with the agricultural landscape seen in the Maria Stein and Troy areas. The lively illustration includes Troy’s historic WACO biplane in the vivid orange sky, while rows of crops and silos cover the fields,” stated Jess Nielsen, Brand Manager of Moeller Brew Barn. “We all know that 2020 has been every bit unexpected,” said Moeller. “Our goal with this HAY-Z Pale Ale is to acknowledge that uncertainty while anticipating a better tomorrow. It’s bright and refreshing – what most of us are looking for in the new year.”
HAY-Z Pale Ale kegs and cans are set to hit distributors on December 14. The HAY-Z Pale Ale is just one of many late 2020 releases at Moeller Brew Barn. Every week through December, additional seltzer and beer releases will be announced to celebrate the season. To learn more, visit Moeller Brew Barn’s online untappd menu or www.moellerbrewbarn.com.

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) has some unique gift ideas for the craft beer enthusiast on your holiday shopping list. The inaugural Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction features dozens of beer-centric experience packages donated by Ohio breweries and other supporters of the state’s brewing industry. Available experiences include canoe and bike trips with brewers, private brewery tours, opportunities to create and brew new beers, and much more.
The Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction will be held online from Dec. 3-12, 2020. Many of the donated experiences are designed for individuals or small groups in order to comply with protocols designed to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Several have an outdoor component or can be redeemed at a future date when public health conditions are favorable. Proceeds from the sale of each package benefit OCBA, the non-profit organization formed to promote, protect, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft breweries.
In normal times, OCBA relies on income from popular beer tasting events like Winter Warmer Fest in Cleveland and Six One Pour in Columbus. OCBA uses those funds to advocate for craft beer-friendly legislation at the Ohio statehouse, provide educational resources to member breweries, offer valuable marketing reach through programs like the Ohio On Tap app, and to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among Ohio’s breweries so they can continue to make world class, award-winning beer.
With state and local restrictions on large gatherings still in place to slow the spread of coronavirus, OCBA has been forced to cancel several fundraising events in 2020 and 2021. To generate revenue crucial to furthering the organization’s mission, OCBA has launched several new campaigns this year. Ohio Brew Haul was rolled out in May to encourage craft beer fans to order beer for carry out and delivery from their local breweries. Ohio Pint Day followed in October with more than 110 breweries offering a collectible pint glass with art by Adam Hernandez. OCBA is also offering limited edition sweatshirts in connection with next year’s planned Winter Warmer Cask Day, to be held in place of a large public tasting event.
“Craft beer has always been about more than just the liquid in the glass,” said OCBA executive director Mary MacDonald. “Our members have graciously donated their time and effort to create these unique experiences to connect with craft beer fans. We greatly appreciate the support of our breweries and Ohio beer enthusiasts as we continue to navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic.”
Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote, preserve, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry. We aspire to be recognized as the industry leader at both state and national levels for preserving the art of making high-quality, unique craft beer; to serve as the unified voice for craft brewers across the state; to advocate on behalf of the Ohio craft beer industry; to contribute to systemic, local community development by driving economic and job growth, while creating experiences that bring people together; and to serve as a beacon for local production and manufacturing through craft beer, resulting in diverse choices for consumers.

Moeller Brew Barn is preparing for a successful end to 2020 with the release of several new brews, including Peppermint Bark Silo Seltzer and Roasted Hazelnut Milk Porter in early November. To pair with Troy Main Street’s upcoming Enchanted Wonderland Weekend, the Troy location, along with the Maria Stein location, are set to release a Peppermint Bark Silo Seltzer.
“We are so excited that Moeller Brew Barn is joining our downtown merchants in the festivities by releasing their new Peppermint Bark Seltzer. It has been so much fun to have Moeller Brew Barn in downtown Troy and we love all the ways they work to support the Troy Community,” mentioned Andrea Keller, Executive Director at Troy Main Street. “We hope everyone will come enjoy downtown Troy’s Enchanted Wonderland Weekend, and we hope that while you’re here you’ll grab a bite to eat and try a new holiday drink at Moeller Brew Barn!”
The Enchanted Wonderland Weekend will be held the first weekend of November with the Peppermint Bark Seltzer being released on Friday, November 6. The beverage will be the first wintery Silo Seltzer in Moeller’s history. It’s a perfect pair for the cooler temperatures.”
In early October, Salted Caramel Coffee Ale was released in both Taproom locations. The success of the ale, with 5.2% ABV and 25 IBU, has proven significant. Six-packs can be purchased at participating retailers statewide, and Salted Caramel can be found on tap in both Moeller Brew Barn Taprooms and at various establishments across the state of Ohio. “This year’s salted caramel coffee ale boasts a big aroma of something salty and sweet. All the flavors round out well in its medium body and hop bitterness. Crack one open, give it a vigorous pour, and enjoy,” said Nick Moeller, owner of Moeller Brew Barn.
Every week through November and December, additional seltzer and beer releases will be announced to celebrate the season. To learn more about these various releases, visit Moeller Brew Barn’s online untappd menu or www.moellerbrewbarn.com.

Ohio craft breweries put forth yet another strong showing at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) awards ceremony, held on Friday, October 16. After bringing home a total of 15 medals last year, the Ohio delegation scored nine awards at the nation’s most prestigious brewing competition.
Wolf’s Ridge Brewing in Columbus led the field of Ohio entrants with two medals at the 2020 competition. Daybreak won the gold medal in the Coffee Beer category, marking the second award for the beer after taking silver in 2019. Wolf’s Ridge also took the bronze in the Smoke Beer category with their Buchenrauch smoked lager.
Fat Head’s Brewery scored a gold medal for Goggle Fogger in the German-style Wheat Ale category. Fat Head’s has now won awards in 12 straight GABF competitions, earning a total of 26 medals.
Moozie from Cincinnati’s Brink Brewing won gold for the third consecutive year in the Sweet Stout or Cream Stout category. Brink has won at least one GABF medal in each year since its founding in 2017.
Masthead Brewing from Cleveland won gold for Augenblick in the Munich-style Helles category. This is Masthead’s second GABF gold medal and third medal overall.
Cleveland’s Noble Beast Brewing’s Murder Ballads won its second consecutive GABF medal, a silver in the International Dark Lager category. Murder Ballads took bronze in the Baltic-style Porter category in 2019, which was not included in the competition this year.
Fretboard Brewing from Blue Ash and Little Fish Brewing from Athens each won their first GABF medals in 2020. Little Fish earned a silver for Cleft in the Fruited Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category, while Fretboard won silver for Crazy Train in the Belgian-Style Ale or French-Style Ale category. Both breweries have previously won awards at the Brewers Association’s World Beer Cup competition, which was canceled in 2020.
Centerville’s Lock 27 Brewing scored their first GABF medal win, a bronze for Wolk in the Belgian-style Witbier.
Since 1987, 50 Ohio craft breweries have combined to win 162 medals – 54 gold – at the Great American Beer Festival.
“In a year that has been defined by struggles, it’s very satisfying to see our Ohio breweries celebrating a victory today,” said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association. “As much uncertainty and turbulence as our industry has seen, the constant that has remained is that Ohio breweries are still making world-class beer despite all of 2020’s challenges.”
