Crooked Handle Springboro Expanding!

March 22, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s been in the planning stages for a while, and Crooked Handle co-owner Kristy Moore shared they had hoped the expansion would have been completed before the holiday this year, but it looks like it is finally going to start.

By taking over the space in the plazza to the right, that used to be a travel agency the brewery will be able to add another 50 or so seats and a private room to be booked for special event! The  expansion will also give them additional seating on their patio and if all goes as planned the work will be done by the end of April.

Dayton at Work and Play: Brewer Jon Naghski

March 13, 2023 By Bill Franz

Fifth Street Brewpub head brewer Jon Naghski came here from Chicago where he was the head brewer at Goose Island’s Clybourn brewpub.
The Fifth Street building dates back to 1856. Except for a few years when it sat empty it has always served drinks and food to the neighborhood. The brewpub is a co-op, which means that a small investment by a large group of people could revive the building and install brewing equipment. For only $125, you could also be one of the owners. I love their motto “Building a Community, one beer at a time.”

Hours:
Tues – Thurs 4-10pm

Grand Opening for Urbana Brewing Co

November 18, 2022 By Dayton937

Under the leadership of three long-time Urbana residents, Jason Kile, Neal Pence, and Jamon Sellman, Urbana Brewing Co. hopes to build up a burgeoning nightlife in the small town, and ultimately attract beer lovers from across the Miami Valley.

Pence shows off his recently installed brewing system.

“I started with a two-gallon Mr. Beer kit, bought at a local drugstore,” Pence, the head brewer said, when describing his transition from hobbyist brewer to business partner. “Quickly I expanded there to five gallons system and most recently I was brewing on what’s known as a half-barrel system.”

At Urbana Brewing Co. his output will expand tenfold, but Pence said the basics remain the same. “You start with hot water, you mix in grain, you take the liquid off, you add in your flavors and hops and then you let the yeast do their magic,” he said. “Mankind has been doing it for as far back in history as we can really see.”

When the brewery gets up and running, Pence wants that process to be on full display, with his brewing system featured prominently on the main floor, along with a family-friendly set of games, while those looking for a quieter atmosphere can head upstairs to the furnished rooftop.

At the center of the experience though, Pence wants to make sure his beer shines.

“The bar ends up being your focal point for any good brewery,” he said.

An engineer, Pence said he came to Urbana about 20 years ago for his first job in his field, decades later, he’s proud to call the city his home.

“I’ve always been a small-town person at heart and I just love what Urbana has to offer,” he said.

The above was originally posted by Michelle Alfini of Spectrum News.

It’s grand opening weekend for the brewery, starting at noon Friday, Nov 18th.

Urbana Brewing Co will be operating under a self service model. You’ll order your beer and food at the bar, your beer will be poured then, you’ll be notified when your food is ready.

Crowlers and growlers will not be available during grand opening weekend, but look for them in the near future.

Here’s the opening beverage menu:

Limited edition art glasses to celebrate Ohio Pint Day

September 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Ohio Pint Day will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022 at more than 180 participating breweries across the state. Craft beer enthusiasts are invited to purchase a limited-edition collectible pint glass available exclusively at the participating brewery taprooms. In partnership with OCBA member breweries and Boelter Beverage, $1 from every glass will be donated to the OCBA.

Ohio Craft Brewers Association commissioned Juan Vergara, co-owner of Pulpo Beer Company in Willoughby, to design the 2022 Ohio Pint Day glass. Here’s his statement about the design:

My inspiration behind this year’s Ohio Pint Day design was Solidarity. With every struggle the hospitality industry has been through in the past couple of years and as it continues to this day, we shall never forget that lending a helping hand between all of us and sharing our misfortunes and accomplishments we can all survive and overcome. This design is also to inspire those who remain in this hard fought industry to remember why they are in it, to enjoy it, because it is a craft like no other to welcome and pamper customers while providing a great experience. Also, to those who patronize our establishments to be courteous, patient and enjoy themselves, but to also remember to stand in solidarity with your favorite local businesses, because these are who make your communities whole and unique.

Warped Wing Brewing Company to Open North of Dayton

September 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Warped Wing Brewing Company, headquartered in the heart of Downtown Dayton, Ohio, is excited to announce plans for a new Brewery and Taproom location in Huber Heights! Planned to open in Spring/Summer 2023, the new location at 6602 Executive Boulevard in Huber Heights will feature a large taproom with outdoor biergarten, warehouse & production space, private event space with small pilot brewing system and food menu focused on smoked foods similar to the Springboro & Mason taprooms. Seating capacity is 127 in the main taproom, 48 in the event space, and 104 in the outdoor biergarten.

“Huber Heights has a great community of craft beer fans. During the pandemic we delivered more beer via our home delivery program to Huber Heights than any other community. We are forever grateful for their support during that difficult time and so opening this new brewery at The Heights means so much to our team” said Nick Bowman, co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing. “Huber Heights is definitely a community on the move and we are very excited to be a part of it” said Bowman.

“We are planning on adding a pilot brewing system at our new location in Huber Heights” said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster at Warped Wing. “The flexibility of having multiple systems allows us more opportunity to experiment and create unique offerings exclusive to our taprooms” said Haggerty.

“We are very excited to continue our partnership with Warped Wing Brewing Company and work with them on their new Huber Heights location” said Jerad Barnett, President & CEO at Synergy & Mills Development. “With the proximity to the growth in northern Huber Heights and the Rose Music Center area as well as fantastic visibility from I-70 and land for additional growth in the future, we believe this is the perfect site for Warped Wing’s fourth location and look forward to beginning construction soon and opening this facility in the spring of 2023.” said Barnett.

In addition to Warped Wing’s vast selection of beers available, the taproom will also serve a variety of beverages including wine, seltzer, hard cider, and spirits with a focus on specialty cocktails as well as non-alcoholic options like housemade sodas.

Construction is set to begin this Fall and is expected to be completed in Spring of 2023. More details to be released as plans for the new Huber Heights location develop.

Brewery & WYSO Celebrate Partnership

September 15, 2022 By Dayton937

Yellow Springs Brewery and WYSO will release the second version of the WYSO-inspired Vox Populi beer at a dance party this Friday, August 16, at the brewery’s Barrel Room.

Radio Basim, host of “Behind the Groove,” will DJ from 7–9 pm, and Chef Dane will be on site from 5–8 pm to prepare dinner. Screen printer Four Ambition will be in the parking lot starting at 6 pm to print T-shirts, with the Vox Populi artwork, that will be available only at the event.

Vox Populi was first released in 2014, as an American Pale Ale. The new batch is a pilsner, brewed with German malt and German and Czech hops, and will be available Friday only on tap (no cans yet).

WYSO Music Director Juliet Fromholt said this long-time partnership with Yellow Springs Brewery formed easily because both organizations are community-minded. “It felt natural to celebrate that,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to combine our talents to gather the community together—and dance!”

On Friday, attendees can also get maps for and information about the musicians playing at Yellow Springs Porchfest, which starts at noon on Saturday. During this free event, local musicians play on the porches, in the front yards, and on the patios of homes and businesses within about a half mile radius of downtown Yellow Springs.
