#HomeGrownStories – Sweet by Kristy

August 9, 2017 By Guest Contributor

Kristy Reis has lived in Tipp City for most of her life. She grew up being inspired by her mom, Melissa Cairns, for her entrepreneurial spirit and creativity. In 2011, Kristy followed in her mother’s footsteps by opening her own business next to her mom’s shop Cairns Toys. SWEET By Kristy is a boutique bakery, confectionery, and ice cream scoop shop, located in historic downtown Tipp City. The bakery features a variety of handmade ‘tastastic’ and beautiful treats including gourmet cupcakes, cookies, gluten-free brownies, fudge, chocolate dipped sweets and more! Kristy was recently interviewed for our #HomeGrownStories campaign.

On moving back to Miami County:
I did not plan on staying in the area. I think almost every kid wants to get out of town when they grow up, you know? I went to college at Miami University, that’s where I met my husband, and after college, we lived in Cincinnati for a while. We eventually made our way back to Tipp once I decided that I was going to start my own business. It just made sense to start next to my mom so we came back.

On starting her business, SWEET by Kristy:
I’ve always seen my mom making things. She ran her business out of our house, so when I grew up I got to help with little tasks where I wouldn’t screw anything up [laughs] to help her. She made stuff to sell all the time. My aunts and uncles would come over in the evening and help her after they got off work. I think her creativity and seeing her make that into a business really inspired me. I always had that in the back of my mind, that I wanted to do something like that someday, but I never really knew how to turn that into an actual business for myself. I didn’t know what to do. When I went to college, I had to decide on something so I ended up being a nursing major – which is totally not creative at all. I worked as a nurse for seven years and became really burnt out. Then it finally came to me and I realized that I could bake and that turned into my business, SWEET by Kristy.

On the community response to SWEET by Kristy:
Everyone feels good and likes to come in and get a treat. It’s fun and celebratory. I feel like I’m on the other end of the spectrum from my previous work as a nurse. Before I met people when they were in a crisis or facing a difficult time in their life and now I meet people when they’re celebrating life. It’s much more positive.

What she loves most about Miami County:
I like that Miami County is small enough that you can get a really good sense of the community and get to know the people around you. It has a nice, small town feel that I really like. I also like getting to know everybody’s different talents and unique businesses. I enjoy connecting with other business owners and entrepreneurial people. You get to know what people are doing and connect with them and you try to support each other. With all of our different businesses, you really don’t need to go outside of the county. You can keep everything as local as possible. It’s fun to support each other within our small community.

Her recommendations of things to do and places to visit in Miami County:
There are so many different creative events in Miami County! We have car shows, the Tipp City Mum Festival, the Troy Strawberry Festival, and Canal Music Fest in Tipp. There’s just so many different things to do (which is really great), I don’t think I can have one favorite. For dining in Miami County, I like Sam and Ethel’s in Tipp for breakfast, Mojos Bar & Grille in Troy for drinks and sandwiches, and Coldwater Cafe in Tipp for dinner. Getting outside, I love Charleston Falls and I really like walking on the bike trail. I really like to play frisbee golf [laughs] along the bike trail here in town.

The best-selling item at SWEET by Kristy:
I started with cupcakes, they are definitely number one! Number two would be our Fud.g.O Chocolates, which are an original item. Fud.g.Os are fudge stuffed Oreos dipped in chocolate.

If Miami County could be represented by a dessert from SWEET by Kristy:
I would say Red Velvet [laughs]. Our Red Velvet Cupcakes are made from scratch the old-fashioned way and frosted with cream cheese icing.

#HomeGrownStories – Michael Scheib- K’s Hamburger Shop

August 3, 2017 By Guest Contributor

K’s Hamburger Shop is a cornerstone of Troy dining. The diner opened July 31, 1935 (which means it celebrated its 82nd birthday this year). Michael Scheib is a fourth generation K’s customer. He has worked at the establishment for the past 8 years and he recently became the third-generation in his family to own a business in Troy.

His connection to Miami County:
I’m from Miami County. My mom owns Expressions of the Home and my grandpa owned a business in Troy. I’m a third-generation business owner here in Troy.

About K’s Hamburger Shop:
We turned 82 yesterday. K’s was started in 1935 by Paul and David Klein. Doris was Paul’s wife and she helped out a great deal. We were across the street from 1935 to 1940. In 1940 they moved across the street to where it is now. The original building ended where that counter is. It was ten stools. I’m having the original blueprints framed so we can display them. I wish they were finished so I could show them to you. In 1948 they added the red booths. In the 1950s they added that room over there. We call that the “new room” even though it was done in ‘58 [laughs].

We still grind our own meat and cook on a wet grill. That was typical of diners in the 1930s. When the flat top grill came out diners switched to that but we never made the change. We do change the oil that the hamburgers are cooked in. There’s a rumor that we haven’t changed the oil since the ’30s but we do it every night [laughs]. I’ve done it myself. We also have salads and five homemade soups. We make malted milkshakes and pie.

I’ve been here for 8 years, so a tenth of the time that K’s has been here [laughs]. I want to take the shop to 100 years and we’ll see how far past that I can go. I dress the way the diner employees dressed in the 1930s. Mr. Klein wore a tie, white shirt, and pants and a white apron. I get too dirty so I don’t wear a white apron [laughs]. In the ‘30s the color white signified the cleanliness of the restaurant. That’s why the walls are white and they wore white.

I met my wife here at K’s. She’s a teacher at Troy Christian. Her parents have a dairy farm out here on the corner of 41 and 202. She’s a fourth-generation K’s customer. I’m also a fourth-generation K’s customer. My wife came in here and sat at the counter and that’s how we started talking. I owe a great deal to this hamburger shop. [laughs]

On the community response to K’s over the years:
The community response has been very good, of course. The average lifespan of a new restaurant is two years thereabouts. So the fact that we’ve been here for 82 years is pretty impressive. We’re the first sandwich shop in Troy and I think we’re the third oldest business in Troy.

They started the restaurant in the middle of the Great Depression. Mr. Klein said, “If you want a job you have to make a one.” They knew the business was going to make it when they could clear $20 a week. That’s amazing to think about when they were selling hamburgers for a nickel. They were very honored that their customers would spend their nickel with them.

What do you love most about Miami County?
K’s! [laughs] It’s very much home and there’s no greater place than home.

What are your Miami County favorites or recommendations for out-of-town visitors?
I should say my mom’s shop, so check out Expressions of the Home. Haren’s Market is what used to be my grandpa’s shop. Folks should check out the different downtowns and support the local shops. It’s the best way to get the feel of the place. I’m pretty boring. [laughs] I don’t get out much. I’m here six days a week and on the seventh day, I go to church. If I’m not here, I’m either at Kroger buying something for the shop, at church or at home!

FREE Firehouse Sub With Water Donation Saturday

August 2, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

With record-setting high temperatures creating dangerous weather conditions across the country, Firehouse Subs invites guests nationwide to help in its effort to support America’s first responders with the sixth annual H2O for Heroes bottled water collection drive.

On Saturday, August 5, all Firehouse Subs restaurants will provide one medium sub* to each guest who donates an unopened, 24-pack of bottled water. The donated water will be provided to local first responders and community support organizations to aid those most in need of water during the hot summer months when the risk of dehydration and other heat-related illnesses is most threatening.

In 2012, Phoenix-area franchisees Jerry and Windy Griffin launched H2O for Heroes as a local initiative to encourage bottled water donations at a time when wildfires and drastic heat had depleted the supplies of several first responder organizations.

“When my husband Jerry and I came up with the idea to start H2O for Heroes, we never imagined the response from the community would be so overwhelmingly supportive,” said Firehouse Subs Franchisee Windy Griffin.

Now in its sixth year, and its second as a nationwide effort, the program continues to provide much-needed relief to first responders. Last year’s drive resulted in more than 528,000 bottles of water donated to local heroes and citizens in need. With heat records rising across the country and sweltering temperatures igniting wildfires from California to Georgia, the demand for donated water remains high this year as well.

“We hear from so many departments that don’t have the additional money to purchase bottled water, and the donations they receive from our guests assist them in a variety of emergency situations,” continued Griffin. “From hydrating firefighters in the scorching summer heat to keeping K9 officers cool on patrol, this water is a life-saving tool.”

Firehouse Subs currently serves its signature hot subs to guests in 44 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and most recently the brand made its debut in airports with Jacksonville International.

Ten Must Attend August Events For Beer Lovers!

July 31, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Are you a beer lover?  August looks to be an excellent month to attend a variety of beer tastings.  Some of theses will sell out in advance and most do cost more at the door, so you’ll want to think about purchasing tickets in advance. This doesn’t include weekly tastings at Arrow Wine, Whole Foods, Ollie’s and so many more of our favorite drinking spots, check our MostMetro Calendar for those!

Some other tips (learned from experience) include:

  • Wear comfortable shoes – You’ll be on your feet most of the time, seating is rare at these events,  and it’s not out of the realm that you’ll get stepped on and spilled on, so be prepared.
  • Have Pockets or a Cross Body Bag –  You’ll want somewhere to hold your keys, phone and to put all the swag you’re likely to get from brewers!
  • Water –   It’s your friend- drink lots of it, between brews!
  • Snacks – If you’re not sure, pack a protein bar or two or string some pretzels around your neck.
  • Hat, Shades & Sunscreen – a must for those outdoor events;
  • A camera- taking pictures of the labels of your new favorites is an easy way to remember they for purchase later.
  • untappd– think of it like Facebook for beer

She  continued to supply cakes to several of the best restaurants in town while raising her family. In 1972, with their children grown, Evelyn and her husband Oscar decided to pack up all of their belongings and move to Los Angeles to make one last attempt at owning their own business. With the last of their savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery and began selling Evelyn’s cheesecakes to restaurants throughout Los Angeles. Brunch To Support Future Chefs

July 27, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Did you know Sinclair Community College has a Culinary Team that travels across the state?  Students enrolled in the  Culinary Arts program compete to show off skills like knife cuts on a variety of meats, vegetables, fruits, filleting of fish all within a predetermined time limit. They also have cooking phases, where they make an appetizer,  salad, entrée and dessert.

Students are judged by American Culinary Federation chefs and are scored against a set of standards within strict time limits for set-up, cooking, plating, and clean-up.The competitions help students gain confidence in their professional skills such as timing and presentation. Students also get feedback from professionals from around the country.

This year Summer Key is a team captain and she’s organizing a pop -up brunch at Nibbles in Miamisburg to help defray the costs of the team.  This fundraiser will help pay for entrance fees and the travel they have to get to competitions. The big statewide event is in September, and last year the team won bronze for the state of Ohio.  Below is the menu she’s sent along.  I

5th Year for Century Bar- Bourbon Reviews Best Bourbon Bar List

July 26, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

For the fifth year in a row, The Century Bar has been named to The Bourbon Review list of Best Bourbon Bars in America.  They named 99 bars in America who take their Bourbon obsession to another level.  They are easy to spot because they usually have to expand their shelf space to accommodate 100’s of bottles of Bourbon, feature multiple cocktails that show off Bourbon’s wide range of flavors and take pride in educating their patrons about the basics of brown water.  As one on only 2 bars named in Ohio, Century Bar holds this title along with being named “a world-class whiskey joint” by Tasting Table in January of this year.  They called our local bourbon bar,  ” the Midwest’s best-kept boozy secret, this distillery-turned-saloon has been charming those in the know since 1862.”

Here’s the write up from The Bourbon Review:

Century Bar, Dayton, OH: No TV’s.  No jukebox.  Just 115 Bourbons and over 300 whiskies total to choose from while you listen to music from the 1930’s.  The home of the former Kette & Sons Rye Whiskey Distillery, Century Bar also regularly holds blind tastings.

Cheers to the crew that is constantly serving up the best cocktails in town and educating the Miami Valley’s about Bourbon!

You can visit The Century Bar at 10 S. Jefferson Street, across from the RTA Hub.  They are open seven days a week and just a heads up, they don’t serve food, but also don’t mind if you order in a pizza.

  • Monday – Saturday 3:00pm – 2:30am
  • Sunday:6:00pm – 2:30am

Barry Bagels Now Open

July 25, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Boiled and Baked!  That’s the secret to a great bagel and owners of this local franchise, Eric & Jen Fester and their partner Cody Klueter are excited to bring a bagel shop to Kettering.  Cody had worked at a Barry Bagels in Toledo and when they announced they would begin franchising he was first in line.  This store is the 11th Barry’s and if all goes well they’ll consider opening more in the area.

GM Jonathan Hague boiling the bagels.

Located at 4313 Far Hills Ave, nestled amongst the row of quick serves like  Chipotle, Prada, Pizza Fire and Firehouse Subs, Barry Bagels will be serving up bagels, sandwiches, soups and salads seven days a week.  Bagels are cooked fresh daily, from dough shipped in from Barry’s plant in Michigan.  Bagels are boiled for about a minute, seasoned and baked in front of a window, allowing customers to observe the process.  The goal is to never run out of any flavor of bagel from open to close.

Bagel flavors: Onion • Garlic • Everything • Poppy • Salt • Plain • Raisin Blueberry • Pumpernickel • Honey Wheat • Spinach Feta Sunny Grain • Sesame • Asiago • Cheddar Jalapeño Vanilla Cinnamon • Chocolate Chip

Cream cheeses that are whipped fresh daily will include: Lite Scallion, Cinnamon Swirl, Lite Vegetable Ranch, Honey Brown Sugar, Lite Southwest Jalapeño, and  Strawberry.

Co-owner Jen Fester

Their Eggels, think breakfast sandwich, will be available all day long, and with the large menu of meats and veggies, it will be easy to eat their on a regular basis and not get bored.  Also on the menu David’s cookies, and Biggby Coffee, in several flavors for just $1.99.  Joe To Go (10-12 cups) is available for $19.99, but they recommend calling ahead to place that order. A catering menu including bagel, deli, sandwich or cookie  trays as well as box lunches is available and delivery and online ordering will be added later this summer or early fall.

General Manager, Jonathan Hague shared the teams goal  “to be not just a bagel shop, but a valued member of the community.”  Most of the management team like in Oakwood or Kettering and spend a lot of time at school sports and volunteering in the community.

In asking co-owner about what she envision for the business she was quick to say, “freshness made daily that tastes great in a friendly atmosphere that feels like everyone knows each other.”  Hague quickly tags it as “Cheers-like,  where everyone knows your name.”

Welcome to the neighborhood!
