Dayton Together – Initiative To Merge City & County Government

July 9, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

daytontogetherDayton Together, a non-profit corporation, has launched an initiative to propose meaningful changes to the structure of our local government. Dayton Together believes Montgomery County’s recent economic successes, including Fuyao, General Electric’s Research Center and Procter & Gamble, afford an exciting opportunity to ask the question, “What can local governments in Montgomery County do the enhance and accelerate prosperity in the region?”

Using Louisville, Kentucky’s metro government as a model, the group will work to create a Montgomery County Charter and propose a ballot initiative to combine the City of Dayton and Montgomery County into a single metro government.

“The ultimate decision-making power rests with the people,” said Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Foley, also a member of Dayton Together’s steering committee. “There will be no change unless the majority of voters approve it.”

“This initiative responds to the growing realization that our County has been in continual economic decline for the past several decades with the major loss of jobs with livable wages,” said Bro. Raymond Fitz, S.M., former president of the University of Dayton and member of the Dayton Together steering committee. “This lack of good jobs has been a major roadblock to our families and young people.”

“The current county structure, comprised of 28 separate local governmental entities, is too fragmented to address and respond to our challenges and opportunities,” said Commissioner Foley. “It’s time to harness our talent for innovation and reinvent how we deliver local governmental services.”

Dayton Together studied broader use of shared services agreements, formation of a Council of Governments, and tax sharing agreements but concluded a unified governmental structure was needed to fully achieve needed improvements. “These types of agreements are valuable and are being used in our region already,” said the Honorable Walter H. Rice, U.S. District Court Judge and member of Dayton Together’s steering committee. “But we believe that they are not sufficiently comprehensive to solve our challenges. More dynamic change is necessary.”

Dayton Together has begun work through two committees to develop a proposed charter for the Dayton-Montgomery County Metro Government. The charter will allow for additional communities to participate in the future. A Charter Development Committee comprised of a diverse group of 15-20 people will lead the drafting effort with the support of a larger Charter Advisory Committee offering feedback and advice. Meetings excepting work sessions will be open to the public, and input will be sought.

mqdefault

The Charter Development Committee is co-chaired by Paul Leonard, former Dayton Mayor and Lieutenant Governor, and Commissioner Dan Foley. Brother Ray will chair the Charter Advisory Committee.

“The proposed reforms reflected in the new County charter will improve our county-wide performance in attracting, retaining and growing jobs, responding to community-wide challenges, and capitalizing on opportunities,” said Phil Parker, President and CEO of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, and a Dayton Together steering committee member. “The reforms will free up and align resources for more effective investment in infrastructure and development initiatives, as well as increase our community’s visibility, voice and clout as we work to attract and retain both people and jobs.”

“As we look to the future of our communities, we know there is support for this type of bold, innovative measure,” said Judge Rice. We must reverse the declining trends in our county. We may not create a perfect government, but we can make improvements that will set the stage for success.”

Pop-Up Program Expands To Offer Office Space

June 30, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

pop upActivated Spaces, an initiative to fill downtown storefronts, is launching a new phase of the program called Pop-Up Office. Applications are being accepted for office businesses to open downtown this summmer. The project is mirrored after the successful Pop-Up Project, which traditionally has focused on matching retail and restaurant focused business owners with downtown property owners who have first floor space available for occupancy.

The Activated Spaces team is launching this new initiative to attract start-ups and other small businesses that will add energy and vibrancy to downtown office buildings. The project launched Catapult Creative as a pilot office tenant in 2014 to test out the viability of a pop-up office space. After seeing the success of this business, the team is excited to expand into a selection round strictly geared towards office space seekers.

“This is something we’ve been looking at for a couple years,” said Pop-Up Project leader, Elise Huelskamp. “As the project continued to be a success, we wanted to see what we could tackle next in order to grow and develop the program, and we felt we could apply it to the concept of short-term office space leasing.”

Attracted to competitive lease rates and the combination of authenticity, activatedwalkability, connectivity, and community only available in the center city, more and more entrepreneurs and small business owners are choosing a downtown address. Since 2010, more than 90 start-ups have launched in the downtown core and the number of small businesses is steadily growing. The Pop-up Office Project seeks to build on this momentum.

Unique to this phase of the program, the spaces will not be located on the first floor but rather an upper floor of a downtown building. The spaces will be clustered near each other, giving the business owners an opportunity to collaborate. Lease lengths will range from three to six months. The spaces may have varying lease rates, but will be leased below market value. The Downtown Dayton Partnership will connect businesses with commercial property owners. The Activated Spaces volunteers help make the space move-in ready and help promote the business. Selected businesses will negotiate leasing terms directly with the selected property owner, but flexibility for the tenant is a priority.

Interested office space seekers should fill out an application, which can be downloaded at www.activatedspaces.org, and email it to Jen Cadieux. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, July 17. Tenants will be selected the week of July 31, and must be able to operate in their space no later than the end of August.

The project will also continue a retail program, and plans to launch another call for retail applicants in the coming months for a fall opening. Activated Spaces volunteers hope to build on the success of the Pop-Up Project, which has launched shops such as Sew Dayton, Confetti, and most recently Twist Cupcakery. Since it was started, the project has launched 18 shops (13 of which are still open), filled over 16,000 square feet of previously vacant space and created 31 jobs.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations UpDayton and Generation Dayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program, and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.

Vectren Dayton Air Show Adds Ultralight Display

June 16, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

ultraSome of the most fascinating flying machines at this weekend’s Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger will also be some of the tiniest.

While massive military jets such as the Air Force C-17 Globemaster III airlifter and KC-135 refueler will dominate the static display area at Dayton International Airport, spectators will also have a chance to discover the world of light-sport and ultralight aircraft—the smallest, simplest machines one can fly.

As many as six light airplanes are scheduled to be on display both days of the weekend air show. While numbers and types are subject to change, the lineup includes examples of Challenger, Phantom, Quicksilver, Rans, Titan and Xenon aircraft. Put on by local enthusiasts, the ultralight display is new to the air show this year.

Instead of streamlined hulls and jet engines, these one- or two-seat machines are made with tubes, wires and fabric. They typically have two-stroke engines that deliver 30 to 60 horsepower. They don’t go fast, but their open-air designs offer spectacular views.

“They give the pilot a bird’s eye view of the world with the wind in his face,” said Paul Lindamood, director of Dayton Ultralights, an informal group of recreational fliers based at Moraine Airpark.

“Ultralight flying is largely about the simplicity, the romance and the glory days of flying—the sheer exhilaration of being a part of the wind, the sky and the elements,” said Lindamood, who plans to display his Quicksilver 2S both days.

Lindamood believes ultralight flying allows one to experience flight as the Wright brothers knew it—but with the benefit of today’s aerospace materials and design knowledge. “Wilbur and Orville would have marveled at what these modern day craft can do,” he said.

Originally organized in 2000 and revived in 2013, Dayton Ultralights holds numerous annual fly-ins, contests and group flying excursions. It counts a local flying membership of 75, with more than 30 pilots and aircraft based in the Dayton region. Its Facebook page includes more than 1,100 pilots from around the world.

“We work to reach out to the flying and non-flying community in communicating the merits of ultralight and open-air flying. We endeavor to adhere to all conventional rules of flight and airport safety operations, and to constantly improve our flying skills and abilities,” Lindamood said.

The Vectren Dayton Air Show is one of America’s top annual aviation events. This year’s headliner act will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Joining them will be the U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet, U.S. Army Golden Knights and a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue (SAR) demonstration. Not Your Ordinary Lemonade Stand

June 12, 2015 By Nikki Nett

A little girl with her desire mckenzto cure cancer has made a pretty big impact on the Dayton area. Saturday June 13 marks the 10th Anniversary of McKenzie’s “Alex’s Lemonade Stand“.

Erica Monbeck, McKenzie’s mom, summed up the event for us. “Just about 10 years ago little McKenzie had her first lemonade stand. She raised about $400 in our garage & was so cute telling the reporter she just wanted to help raise $ to give to the Doctors to find a cure for cancer. This  will be her 10th stand! Almost $30,000 raised with a big goal to get the number to $57,000 doubling what she has done the past nine years

Festivities start Friday night 8-11 with the adult party at the VIP lounge Poelking South! We have some amazing silent auction/raffle items.

Saturday 10-2 is all about the kids and you can find McKenzie’s Alex’s Lemonade Stand at Elizabeth Diamond Company on Far Hills Ave. We have a 24 ft rock wall, slides, bouncies, Dayton Drones, Zombie Dogz, Awesome Yogurt, Local Love a Roaming Boutique, and SICSA Mobile Pet Adoption Center!  . One of this year’s highlights is candles with 100% of the proceeds being donated by West End Naturals. In one of the candles, will be a ladybug which can be redeemed at EDC for a fabulous pair of earrings!

This year we are raising funds in memory of Caroline Ann Carter.  Caroline battled neuroblastoma for 3 years before becoming an angel.

We hope you will bring out the family and support this great cause and most of all have some fun!!!

If you’re unable to make it, but would still like to contribute, you can do so by following this link: McKenzie’s Lemonade Stand.
