Thanksgiving Weekend features Rock’n’Roll Reunions at The Brightside

November 26, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Dayton’s finest guitarists reunite for an exclusive show at The Brightside on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday November 27, 2019

Thanksgiving weekend is a time to reunite with friends and family, from far and wide. It holds true for musicians too! This weekend, some very special reunions are happening at The Brightside over the holiday weekend.

On Wednesday November 27th, the weekend kicks off with a showcase that serves to reunite dozen of area’s finest psychedelic rock musicians and their fans for the ultimate Thanksgiving Jam! Dayton music lovers have been attending Werksgiving for years, so while The Werks are taking a break, lead guitarist Chris Houser has invited his friends for an epic line up featuring Subterranean, Kommunity Service (a super group featuring members from The Werks, Boogie Matrix, Subterranean & Arrows of Neon), and Oh Kee Pa performing a tribute to Phish. My advice? Wear comfy shoes and prepare to boogie!

This rockin’ weekend continues with a Black Friday Special on November 29th, which highlights an exclusive homecoming performance by Dayton native Charlie Tipton. He’s been working on his EP in Tennessee and is excited to perform this material with his hometown family! The night is topped off with high energy Blues Rock from Wolf Moon Revival! It’s going to be an incredible night of original Dayton music!

Bonus – both performances will have the Hunger Force Food Truck on site! Their specialty is comfort food, which is perfect for the holiday weekend. So come hungry for this special weekend of live music and reunions with old friends!

GRAMMY award winning jazz comes to The Brightside Sunday October 20th!

October 16, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

The Brightside Music & Event Venue invites you to another intimate evening of world class jazz-funk-world music from 3x Grammy award winning guitarist Bob Lanzetti, of Snarky Puppy fame!

Bob Lanzetti is a Brooklyn, NY based professional guitarist, composer, producer, and educator. He has performed and recorded with many artists throughout the NYC area as well as played in over 40 countries with the three time Grammy Award Winning jazz/funk collective, Snarky Puppy: Best R&B Performance in 2014 (“Something” featuring Lalah Hathaway), and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017 (“Sylva” with Metropole Orkest and “Culcha Vulcha”, respectively).

Bob Lanzetti’s group consists of a collective of old friends who have been playing together in a variety of settings for over a decade. The band is able to move as one, effortlessly changing styles as well as weaving between composition and improvisation. The group draws inspiration from many genres of music. In a given performance you can hear hints of Americana, jazz, avant-garde, rock, afro-beat, country, and free improvisation, sometimes all within the same tune. Currently the group consists of Jordan Perlson on drums (Adrian Belew, Banda Magda, Becca Stevens Band) and Matt Aronoff on bass (Banda Magda, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner).

Bob released his debut record as a leader entitled, Whose Feet are These That are Walking, in fall of 2017 to positive reviews and has done a number of US tours in support of the album.

Dixon’s Violin is a mesmerizing performance you don’t want to miss!

October 15, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Dixon’s Violin performs at The Brightside Music & Event Venue on Friday October 18, 2019.

Downtown’s newest indoor music venue, The Brightside, is dedicated to providing a true variety of quality music to Dayton’s audiences. This weekend proves that point! On Friday they host Dixon’s Violin, as seen on TED.com, at Electric Forest, at Burning Man, and across North America. This is a rare opportunity to see this mesmerizing music up-close-and-personal in their intimate listening room space!

The world’s premier visionary violinist, Dixon’s life mission is to inspire people – and he has done so across North America, including giving three TED talks/performances, performing for over ten years at Burning Man, plus radio, TV, and film appearances. A former technology leader and symphony violinist, Dixon walked away from a distinguished career to follow his dream full-time, and invented a whole new music genre. Dixon now improvises on a 5-string electric violin with a looping system he developed to create an all-live one-man symphony, guided by his remarkable personal story of life transformation.

Kicking off the show is Dance Furiously, a rock and roll orchestration of funk, electronica, jazz, pop & soul that blends together a compelling sound which tells the story of a thriving music community in Columbus, Ohio. The group emphasizes live improvisation & expression thru their live show and consistently opens up their songs and reinterprets them to make them sound uniquely new, each time.

Remember the Dead Sunday, Oct 20th at Dia de los Muertos Parade & Celebration

October 11, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Day of the Dead (Dia de los muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

This Sunday, October 20, 2019, Dayton celebrates Dia de los Muertos, and honor the lives of loved ones who have passed. Pre-parade festivities start at 2pm. The parade starts at 4pm, and will travel through the Oregon District on Fifth Street, and arrive at the Missing Peace Art Space for the post-parade celebration from 5-8pm. There will be beautiful altars (offrendas) to enjoy, along with food, music, and dancing!

This event is a vibrant celebration and extra special way to carry on the memory of those we love and miss.

Enjoy the first Songwriter Showcase at The Brightside!

May 6, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Dayton’s newest music venue, The Brightside, is presenting its first Songwriter Showcase this Wednesday May 8th, 2019. The venue has two spaces for music, a large ballroom for larger concerts and events, and a smaller listening room, that is ideal for intimate evenings such as this special showcase.

The evening starts off at 8pm with Jack Ballengee Morris performing his all original songs, accompanied by Peter Fox on cello. Morris, a 4th-generation Appalachian singer-songwriter, originally from Clay County, West Virginia. His music is planted firmly by his roots but allows for the influences of Ramblin’ Jack, John Prine, Bob Dylan and Daniel Johnston.

At 9pm, Dayton’s own Amber Hargett takes the stage. Amber received raved reviews from her recent album release performance, and has been in the Top 5 Best Sellers at Dayton’s Omega Music record store. Amber Hargett blends folk, rock, pop, roots and soul sounds into her unique storytelling style. Her writing attempts to balance honesty with empathy and reflect truths about faith, life, and relationships.

The evening closes with a 10pm set from Closest Relative, coming to Dayton for the first time from Columbus. After a 2015 motorcycle accident took two fingers from his left hand, longtime guitarist Jack O’Connell adopted a new playing style and started performing solo as Closest Relative. His music is characterized by intricate two-fingered guitar work, and earnest lyrics. His latest EP “This Tree is Base” expands on his previous EP “Messes” and unfurls his songwriting in unexpected directions.

Making this show extra special is the live art happening on site. Artists Etch and Tiffany Clark will be creating the Dayton skyline outside the venue as a permanent art piece! Very cool. This promises to be a Wednesday evening out that you won’t want to miss!

Noteworthy choreographers who have worked with the company include Alvin Ailey, Talley Beatty, Donald Byrd, Bill T. Jones, José Limón, Donald McKayle, Ray Mercer, Bebe Miller, Doug Varone, and Kevin Ward.

Together, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will present a thrilling performance to honor DCDC’s 50th Anniversary as the region’s outstanding modern dance company rooted in the African American experience. The evening’s performance will consist of three engaging pieces that celebrate the artistry and athleticism of the full DCDC company of dancers.

The first of the three pieces presented will be the World Premiere choreographed by former DCDC artistic director Kevin Ward. The new work is entitledand each day you mean one more and is set to brand new music by composer and musician Derrick Spivey, Jr. and performed by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Neal, Derrick and Kevin–conductor, composer, and choreographer–have worked closely together over the last several months to bring this work to life.

and each day you mean one more is partly inspired by the poem “The Low Road” by Marge Piercy, which addresses the challenges faced by the lone actor for societal good and how, with the gradual attraction and enlistment of like-minded individuals, a real force for change can be built that can resist destructive reactionary forces. In creating the dance, choreographer Kevin Ward was inspired by many lone actors such as Fanny Lou Hamer, David Hogg, Fred Rogers, James Baldwin, Malala, Claudette Colvin, and many nameless actors, such as the U.S. prisoners who staged a massive strike against systematic abuse, even though it resulted in the cruelest solitary confinement, and how their efforts inspired millions to follow suit.

DCDC will also perform a signature work from their history called Children of the Passage. This work was co-created for DCDC by world-renowned choreographer Ronald K. Brown and Tony-nominated choreographer Donald McKayle, who passed away just over a year ago this April. The work follows a party of decadent lost souls that are haunted and later rescued by spirits that reconnect them to their ancient and ancestral character. The composition is a cadence that is drawn from the traditional marching jazz bands of New Orleans, with the grind and groove of the contemporary jazz and soul music. The language of movements is translated from the visual poetry of African and African American dance and the celebration of cultural rituals of yesterday and today.

The third work on the program is American Mo’, created by choreographer and DCDC Associate Artistic Director Crystal Michelle Perkins. The dance is a celebration of triumph over adversity. Dancers express freedom, courage and joy to Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings,” composed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This work originally premiered on September 19 & 20, 2015 as part ofAmerican Mosaic, Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts and was performed with accompaniment by Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra at the Schuster Center. DCDC has performed the innovative piece in New York City, Kazakhstan, and the Bolshoi in Moscow.

This is the music and dance party you need in your life!

April 16, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

April is a magical month because it finally feels like spring. After the long cold and grey winter months, those first weekends in April when you don’t have to wear a coat or scrape your windshield, feels like freedom. When that happens, it’s time to shake off cabin fever, push the cobwebs off those dancing shoes, and have some fun! You can do that in spades at this weekend’s This Must Be The Party concert extravaganza!

This Must Be The Party is the namesake of a local all-star tribute band that performs a complete recreation of the innovative album and documentary “Stop Making Sense” by the Talking Heads. This act blasted onto the Dayton scene in 2017 with a much talked about performance. Local music legend Sharon Lane wrote “It was beyond crazy good, it was an amazing show. Everyone was incredible. I will say this… Dayton has some unbelievable musicians. What a great time. If you missed it… don’t miss the next one!” Well it’s been a 2 year wait for the “next one” – and it’s finally here this weekend!

Making this show even more special is the addition of the all original afro-funk-jazz band Ernie Johnson from Detroit. This 9-piece band that is actually from Cincinnati will blow your socks off – literally! With a powerful horn section and infectious grooves, you won’t be able to resist the dance floor! (My advice, wear comfortable shoes).

All of this musical goodness is happening at the brand new Brightside Music & Event Center in downtown Dayton at the corner of 3rd and Keowee. This very cool new space is the new go-to spot for both listening room show and epic dance parties such as this.

Biggest Heavyweight Boxing Match in a Decade TONIGHT!

December 1, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The heavyweight boxing scene is seeing a resurgence, and tonight, Saturday December 1st it will reach a new peak on the comeback trail.

Being billed at “POWER and FURY” it features 2 of literally the biggest and undefeated boxers in the world.

In one corner:, the WBC champ, American  6 foot seven-inch, Deontay Wilder with 40 wins, zero losses, 39 knock outs.  In the other corner, 6 foot nine-inch , British boxing champ, Tyson Fury, with  27 wins, zero losses, 19 knockouts.

It is a true clash of the titans, and with both fighters being undefeated, somebody’s “O” has to go.

The first press conference promoting this fight showed both fighter hurling personal insults at each other in New York.  It look like with the name calling, some bad blood may be involved, besides pride and the legacy at stake,

CHECK OUT THE INTENSE PRESS CONFERENCE EARLIER THIS WEEK  – CLICK HERE

The fight will be held TONIGHT – December 1st, at the Los Angeles Staples Center, and can be seen at local cinemas and cable Pay Per View.  The fight will be the last one of a boxing card, and the main event should start approximately 11:30pm Eastern time tonight.

PLACES TO SEE THE FIGHT:

MOST RECENT STAREDOWN

THESE CINEMAS are showing the fight starting with the 9pm undercard for $25 per seat.
Dayton South 16 and XD
Huber Heights 16
Regal Fairfield Commons Stadium 20 & RPX

The fight is a fascinating clash of 2 personalities – both undefeated.

TYSON FURY – “THE GYPSY KING” was born in Manchester, England in 1988 and named after boxing champ Mike Tyson. On Nov 28th, 2015, Fury knocked out longtime champ Wladimir Klitschko in a world heavyweight title showdown, for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, Lineal and The Ring heavyweight titles.  As a rematch was being set up, Fury failed a drug test in Sept. 2016. A month later he forfeited the titles due to the test results and sought help for depression.  He has never been beaten in the ring.

DEONTAY WILDER – “THE BRONZE BOMBER” His incredible knockout record speaks for itself.  He has 40 fights, 40 wins and 39 knockouts. Wilder is the current WBC Champ and was an Olympic Bronze Medalist.  He was born in Alabama 33 years ago.  He has 2 sons and 3 daughters, one of which has special needs do to spina bifida.   Although highly unknown in the USA, he is a slight favorite for the fight.  Wilder looks capture the nation’s attention and put Heavyweight Boxing back on the map.

TO THE WINNER GOES THE SPOILS:
The winner of the superfight is pretty much guaranteed another big payday versus ANTHONY JOSHUA.. a British born Nigerian who holds the other championship belts that Tyson Fury forfeited.  Joshua has an impressive record of 22-0 with 21 knockouts and is also a huge fighter at  6 foot 6 inches tall..  The winner of  the FURY – WILDER fight would be in line for this mega bout which will be a unification of the titles, meaning just one champion of the world.

If you get a chance to watch the fight at home on PPV or stream the fight, or even stream the fight. Remember, the undercard fights start at 9pm and the main event should start closer to midnight.’

Thanks for checking us out on Dayton Most Metro. Food Adventures is a food blog, but every once in a while we will write on an event with a different topic.

The winner of Fury-Wilder will most likely face this man, Anthony Joshua in a unification superfight for all of the belts.

FIGHT HYPE—— FURY and WILDER

This gets settled TONIGHT !

History & Halloween combine at Huffman’s Spooky Tour

October 1, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

If you’ve ever driven or taken a stroll down Linden Avenue in the Huffman Historic District, you may have been struck by the beauty of the tunnel of oak and linden trees that create a continuous canopy overhead. Or perhaps you were too distracted by the stately collection of Queen Anne, Italianate, and Eastlake Victorian homes. Especially in the fall, there’s a certain magic in the air in Huffman when jack-o-lanterns grace front porch steps and the leaves of the tree canopy transition to autumn colors.

This October 12th and 13th, that magic will be alive and well when the Huffman Historic Neighborhood Association puts on their biannual, guided home tour, “The Spirit of Huffman.” The Spirit of Huffman home tour’s tagline is, “Where Halloween and History Collide,” and, indeed it’s true, when the outing offers tour goers a visual feast of Halloween decorations and entertainment dispersed among the Victorian homes.

Participants of the home tour will be guided through the neighborhood, established in the 1860s through the 1890s  by William P. Huffman, stopping to tour nine unique homes: one totally renovated house, a home bought through auction, homes renovated through Rehabarama, one home that housed the neighborhood post office, and two houses that were doctor’s offices. They will encounter an extensive collection of Halloween decorations, marble mantles, one-of-a-kind woodwork, bay windows, original hitching posts for horses, original carriage houses, carpenter’s lace, fretwork, corbels, towers,  and curved-glass windows. Along the way, they’ll take note of Dayton’s first brick school house, two beautiful Victorian churches with active congregations, and an old market that is looking at a second life. They’ll hear about the importance of the community’s connection to the country’s largest manufacturer of bicycles.

Each time The Spirit of Huffman Tour is presented, visitors are entertained. In addition to being a tour of today’s homes, this is an energized evening walk through time.  Expect to meet up with Huffman residents of a century ago who are scheduled to make an historic return engagement this year – just in time to make the past live again.  Visitors are advised: It is likely you will be transported beyond the Victorian architecture you are coming to see. Come prepared for several “Close Encounters of the Huffman Kind” as they pull back the curtain on time, revealing William Huffman’s new dream for a diverse community of bankers, laborers, shopkeepers, and street vendors at a moment when it is all so exciting and new.  When you come, be sure to listen carefully. The winds of change are rustling through the prairie grasses outside the city. It is 1870 and thanks to one man’s vision, Huffman Prairie is about to transform into the vibrant “Inner East” of Dayton.

Tickets are on sale now! To learn more about the Spirit of Huffman Tour please visit their website at www.SpiritofHuffman.com, or contact [email protected]

A special thank you to sponsors DK Effects, LinkDayton, Blackbox Improv, Dayton Most Metro, St. Anne the Tart, Gem City Podcast and our great neighborhood of volunteers helping to keep the Spirit of Huffman alive.
