Area College to Close in June

May 4, 2026 By Guest Contributor

It is with sincere regret that I inform you that The Modern College of Design will stop delivering instruction on June 2, when students complete their externships, and permanently close on June 23, 2026.

The Modern is closing because we can no longer support operations due to enrollment challenges. Over time, we have worked hard to try to address these challenges by, for example, improving our operations and introducing new programs. Despite these efforts to evolve and grow, we have not achieved the stability needed to continue. As a result, closing has become the most responsible path forward. This has been a difficult, but necessary, decision.

For more than 40 years, The Modern has prepared students for creative careers, and that work has been shaped in part by the broader creative community. Through externships, hiring graduates, and giving students real opportunities to apply what they’ve learned, you’ve helped shape their experience in a way that goes far beyond the classroom. That impact is real, and it stays with them as they move forward in their careers.

Reveal
While our in-person Reveal event will not take place as originally planned, we are developing a digital experience to showcase the work of our graduating class. You will have the opportunity to view student portfolios and connect directly with graduates as they take their next steps. We will be in touch with more details soon.

Thank you for your connection to The Modern and for the role you’ve played in supporting creative talent.

United in Design,
Jessica Barry

Dayton at Work and Play: Elysse Wagner

May 4, 2026 By Bill Franz

Elysse Wagner is an author and poet (and a neighbor). Elysse worked for years in the publishing industry. She decided to pause her career after having her first child and is now the mother of two young sons.
Elysse’s first two books were children’s books. Now she’s written a book of poetry called “Shows up Late with Coffee.” There are funny poems, thoughtful poems, poignant poems, all from the perspective of a young mother. The book would be a great Mother’s Day gift.
There’s a book launch today at Swoon Books and Wine in the Shops of Oakwood from 6-8pm and all ticket holders get a signed copy of the book. You can get a ticket at https://www.eventbrite.com/…/elysse-wagner-shows-up…
I asked Elysse how she was marketing her poetry book. “The book is being sold through https://www.pencilxpaper.com/ The company is owned by Jennae Cecelia, who is an author and poet herself. She successfully self-published her books and created Pencil X Paper Publishing to help other writers and poets reach readers.”
I asked Elysse if she was still writing or if the demands of raising two young sons took all her time. “I an still writing when I get a moment,” she told me. “My second book of poems should be out in October.”
When I stopped by Elysse’s home to pick up my copy of the book, her eldest son showed me a small hoop and said it looked like a Black Hole. This poem must be about him:
Your thirst for knowledge is as endless
as our universe,
and already at two,
you strive to learn it all.
I am of the strong belief
that you favor learning about space
because already nothing in this world
can hold you back.

Henhouse Prowlers Bring Bluegrass to The Brightside

May 1, 2026 By Dayton937

Thursday, May 7 | Doors 7PM

There’s bluegrass, and then there’s bluegrass that’s been around the world a few times.

Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers fall squarely in the second camp. For two decades, the four-piece — Ben Wright on banjo, Chris Dollar on guitar, Jon Goldfine on bass, and Jake Howard on mandolin — have been crisscrossing the globe at a pace most bands couldn’t survive: 34 countries, 5 continents, and a songbook that’s picked up souvenirs from every stop. They land at The Brightside this Thursday, May 7, and if you’ve never caught them live, this is the one to break the streak for.

The Prowlers are rooted in bluegrass and classic country, but trying to pin them there misses the point. Their latest record, Unravel, was produced by Stephen Mougin of the Sam Bush Band and lands as their most expansive work yet — road-worn storytelling, flashes of modern Americana, and the kind of ferocious picking that reminds you why this music has stuck around for a hundred years. The four-part harmonies are gorgeous. The chops are absurd. But the real reason to show up is what happens between the songs.

That’s where 20 years of touring earns its keep. The Prowlers don’t just play sets — they tell stories. Tales from the road get woven through the songbook, and somewhere in the night you’re likely to hear a bluegrassy take on a tune in a language you’ve never encountered before. As founding members of Bluegrass Ambassadors and longtime partners of the U.S. State Department, they’ve taken American roots music to places it rarely travels and brought pieces of those places home with them. It’s a band that genuinely believes music builds bridges words can’t — and after two decades of doing the work, they’ve got the receipts.

The Brightside is exactly the right room for this kind of show. Intimate enough to catch every harmony, loose enough to lean into the between-song stories, and the kind of venue where a band that’s logged this many miles can actually unwind and play.

Come hear what 20 years of chasing something beautiful sounds like.

The RubiGirls Make their Mark…and Dayton is PROUD!!

April 29, 2026 By Dayton937

The two, Still-Performing, originals!

42 years in the making, Dayton’s hometown heroes, the RubiGirls, are finally getting the recognition they so deserve! Helping to raise nearly $4 million for non-profits and charities, the ‘Girls’ have proven they truly have found ‘A Different Way to Make A Difference!’ The group, which started on Rubicon Street in Dayton, in 1984,  found that during the late ’80s, the best way to get folks to open up about the HIV/AIDS crisis was through laughter. They began doing shows around the area which continued to gain momentum, and money. In those early years, the Girls were in demand at ‘Healing Weekends’ where people with HIV could get away and learn about new treatments, new therapies, make new friends….and be entertained by Rubi in the evenings. They were a beacon of peace and laughter for a time when there was little of either.  From there, the Girls began using any and all platforms available to bring relief to a population of people, and their families, that were facing tough times. Cost of medicines, housing, hospital stays….any and all things Rubi could help with, they did!

It was at Celebrity Night Club on North Main that things really took off! Packed houses, overflowing parking lots, and demands for more performances made for a group on the rise. In the 90’s, a documentary by Dayton Local Jonathan McNeal. entitled ‘The RubiGirls‘ hit screens worldwide. The film premiered in San Francisco in 2003, played in film festivals from Reno to Adelaide, Australia, and won awards in Atlanta, Long Island,

Rubi Girls – The Show Must Go On! – 2025

and Cleveland…and the celebrity status was set! The Girls, even today, make yearly appearances out of state, helping raise funds for non-profits in communities there. Today, the Girls, a bit older…the eldest being 63….still pride themselves on helping others. Moreso, the Girls are proud to shout from the rooftops, ‘We are From Dayton Baby!’

Shirt designed to commemorate their legacy!

For Rubi, recently finding out, after 5 years of scrutiny, that they were receiving an Ohio Historical Marker, seemed surreal. For the troupe, it’s always been about finding fun with the family together…and of course, ‘fun-raising!’ This weekend, a permanent bronze marker will be set in Dayton to say ‘Thank You’ to the Girls! 42 years into a ‘charitable way of life,’ the RubiGirls have given to the city a reason to be Proud. It was in our city that this group of men committed to helping the community. They have done just that. A huge congratulations to them….we are all head over HEELS for you!

Sueno Bar Manager Gabriel Prado is also stirring up some new seasonal cocktails specials, many featuring the spirits of Dayton-owned Viva Agave, the event’s annual presenting sponsor.   He’ll also be hosting 45-minute Tequila and Agave Tasting Classes, an intimate and educational journey through 5 pours of uniquely aged and produced agave spirits, held at the main bar of Tender Mercy, just below the restaurant. Tickets can purchased as an “add-on” at checkout after selecting your reservation time at Sueno for $40/person.
“Every year we hear from folks who appreciate the vibe, the warm and playful hospitality, and a more refined way to celebrate the culture and the holiday than we’re used to at the tex-mex corporate spots.  It’s an easy afternoon, with great local music and a more playful approach to Sueno’s chef-driven contemporary Mexican cuisine.  We kinda let our hair down a bit and have some fun with it, and hope to see our friends come out and do the same. We don’t often get to do the Sunday funday thing, so it’ll be special.”

Dayton at Work and Play: Bill Cunningham

April 27, 2026 By Bill Franz

Talking with Bill Cunningham at Front Street in his Visionary Folk Art Gallery.
Lots of people will be coming to Front Street this weekend. Over 150 street artists, many nationally known, will be painting murals and over 100 artist studios will be open. While you’re there you should check out Visionary Folk Gallery. It’s in the small building that shares a parking lot with Building 200.
Bill told me he’s been making folk art since the 1970’s, when he and his grandfather created things together. He has work in the Small Museum of Folk Art and in the Southern Alagaines Museum in Pennsylvania. Bill has made a lot of art with bottle caps, like the basket shown here.
Bill has an extensive personal collection of folk art, some of which is for sale in his shop. I asked him to tell me about this blue piece with the lightbulb. “That’s by Jim Kopp. He lives in Casper, Wyoming. He’s had several museum shows and is collected by a lot of people.”
“The drawing of three people is by S L Jones, who has several pieces in the Smithsonian. He started carving when he retired from the railroad. Then he started painting his carvings and then doing a series of drawings like this one.”
“One of the things people like about folk art is that it’s affordable. You can buy work from successful folk artists – people who have had major exhibitions and whose work has been bought by museums – for less than $100.”

Local Trio Purchases Bock Family Brewing

April 25, 2026 By Lisa Grigsby

A new chapter is coming to a local brewpub. Local owners JT Rusch, Bill Perry, and Matthew Greene announced the purchase of Bock Family Brewing at 8150 Washington Village Drive and will begin operating the business as North Sea Brewing in May. The public-facing venue will be known as the North Sea Bierhall.

Bill Perry, JT Rusch, Matthew Greene

The acquisition brings together three local community members who will serve as the company’s leadership team. JT Rusch will serve as President and Director of Brewing, Bill Perry as Vice President and Director of Operations, and Matthew Greene as Food and Beverage Director. Together, the team says their focus will be simple: craft well, serve well, and welcome well. That means protecting the quality and character guests already appreciate while steadily building an experience people will want to return to again and again.
The new ownership team will officially take over operations on May 4 and say guests can expect much of what they already enjoy to remain in place, including the brewery’s current hours, a similar food menu, and many of the Bock Family beers customers have come to know and love.
For the new team, the goal is not to start over, but to build on what is already working. “We were drawn to what the Bocks and their staff created here,” said Rusch. “There is already a strong foundation of good beer, good food, and community in this space.”
Preserving that sense of welcoming and belonging is a top priority as well. “I want this business to be the most beloved Bierhall in the Dayton Region,” stated Greene. “That statement includes both the customers and the employees. We want everyone to be excited to come to North Sea Bierhall and connect with each other over good food, great drinks, and great experiences.”
Bock Family Brewing will host a farewell celebration on its final day of service, Saturday, May 2, from noon to 10 p.m. The business will then close on Sunday, May 3, to allow for the transition. North Sea Brewing will begin its soft launch in May with a grand opening celebration planned for summer 2026.

10?’s with Chef Julisa from Miami Valley Meals

April 24, 2026 By Lisa Grigsby

Julisa M. Candelaria is a passionate chef driven by purpose, resilience, and a deep commitment to her community. Inspired by her Puerto Rican heritage, she grew up dreaming of opening a food truck with her father. After his passing, she carried that dream forward by beginning her culinary education, honoring his legacy through her work.

However, the challenges of the pandemic reshaped that vision in unexpected and meaningful ways. Experiencing food insecurity firsthand opened Julisa’s eyes to the realities many individuals and families face every day. That experience became a turning point, inspiring her to use her culinary skills not just to create, but to give back.

Today, Julisa has the honor of working alongside fellow chefs to prepare meals for her community using donated and rescued food. While her dream of owning a food truck remains close to her heart, her mission continues to be rooted in accessibility, compassion, and service.

Here’s Julisa’s 10? interview:

1. What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

I’ve just recently fallen in love with miso and I’ve been adding it to EVERYTHING! My roasts, my potatoes and even some of my sweet treats! Find me next month and I promise I will have a different favorite ingredient to play around with.

2. What ingredient do you dread?

Grapefruit. I’m not big into citrus, but grapefruit has to be my least favorite.

3. What’s your favorite dish to make?

I love making rice with corned beef (specifically in a can), it’s one of my favorite childhood dishes and it was the dish that my father would always make for me when he knew I was coming to visit.

4. What’s your favorite pig out food?

Seafood boils! Specifically from Cincy Crab, mix-all-sauces, mild spice, 1# snow crab, substitute potato with corn and a side of hush puppies and rice.

5. What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

One of my favorites since I’ve moved to Dayton would have to be either the Ugly Duckling (I LOVE their breakfast options),Taqueria Mixteca or Invoke down at Second St. Market!

6. What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Just have fun with your food! Experiment with different ingredients and spices. Try foods from other cultures, you’d be surprised what ingredients you fall in love with! That’s how I got to love miso so much.

7. If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Julisa’s father

My father, the man who inspired me to get into culinary arts in the first place and I would love to show him all the things I’ve learned since he’s passed away. My mother because she’s my biggest cheerleader and believes in everything that I do. Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny; he has done incredible things for the people of Puerto Rico and getting to cook for him would be an absolute honor. Lastly, can I invite my friends Kameron, Celeste and Kerrigan? They’ve been with me through so much and they’re some of the best home cooks, everything they make is delicious; I just couldn’t have a dinner party without them.

8. Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Honestly, all of the chefs around me; the ones that I work with on a daily basis and the ones I met in passing. Their styles are all so different and I can learn so much from each and every one of them. They inspire me to be a better chef and to have fun with cooking. Since we work with rescued and donated food, I sometimes question whether ingredients will work together, but they remind me to have fun with a recipe. At the end of the day, I know how to fix my mistakes—I’m a chef.

9. What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

It depends on the season, but once it gets warmer you can find my fiance and I (with our miniature dachshund, Squeebs) down at Eastwood Lake in our kayaks (: When it’s cold, I like to stay in and play my video games (Dead by Daylight, Marvel Rivals and Sims 4).

10. Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

This story isn’t a kitchen disaster but definitely a lucky break! When I was in college studying culinary, there was a day where I was MOD (manager on duty), and on MOD days you arrive early and leave late and you make sure that all of the students have everything they need for that day.

On this particular day, we were being graded on making eggs benedict. After reviewing the recipe, I made the order for the students and made sure that they had everything they needed. I went back to my station and realized that I had not added myself to the count. BIG MISTAKE. I was not allowed to go down to the pantry to get more product, which meant I had to go around to the students and ask if they had any extras. Luckily, there were a couple of students that were able to help me out enough to make a half portion. It was probably some of the best hollandaise sauce I ever made; I added gochujang which is this fabulous Korean chili paste and it gave the sauce some color but also added some spice and sweetness to it and I garnished my plate with sauteed leeks.

My teacher probably should have marked my assignment as only half complete since I served a half portion. But, I was the only student who thought outside the box with my dish—and the only one without a partner that day. I also skipped the immersion blender and whisked my sauce BY HAND, so she ended up giving me full credit. Big shoutout to Chef Liz, I should probably also invite her to my hypothetical dinner party.

So to all my home chefs out there, have fun with your food and think outside of the box! It might work out in your favor one day.

Growing Gingkos Again!

April 22, 2026 By Dayton937

4 new Gingko Trees line Stonemill Road.

We all remember several Ginkgo trees that were taken down in the University of Dayton area. The Gingko trees had lived peacefully in the area since the days before UD and during the NCR days. At that time, the decision to remove the trees was controversial, with folks choosing sides between the robust, sprawling trees, which were magical come fall…and the stinky, leafy giants with the thick-skinned fruit!

“I loved those trees….they were like a tradition in the neighborhood with their changing colors and their majestic presence!” says Janet T, a Rubicon Mill neighborhood resident. Many would disagree, as gingkos, especially females, are a tough tree to maintain. But for others…a longtime reminder of Spring! “I can remember seeing them fill out in the April and May months and realizing we were out of the winter blahs!”

With that in mind, the Rubicon Mill section of Dayton is bringing the Gingko back….at least somewhat! 5 or 6 new Gingko trees have been replanted in the Stonemill area in hopes of reviving the lost look and feel of the botanical giants! Not only have Gingko trees been planted in the picturesque                     Rubicon Mill area, but a variety of trees have been planted along the streets in the South Dayton neighborhood.

First Gingko planted in area 3 years ago

Rubicon Mill boosts beautiful gardens.

Rubicon Mill encompasses the Patterson Homestead, which also touts a wide variety of trees and bushes that awaken this time of year. The Gingko tree has a rich history. They are affectionately called  ‘living fossils’ as they are believed to be hundreds of thousands of years old. Their disease-free resilience has made these revered trees legendary. There is no doubt that the Gingko trees will be around for years to come, delighting Daytonians! And with any luck, they, too, will be enjoyed and remembered for their beauty….for many years to come!
