A First Visit to Crafted & Cured

February 9, 2023 By Guest Contributor

Sidney resident Roger Garber shared his experience at the newly opened Crafted & Cured, located at 8 S. Market Street in Troy.

So after waiting for years for them to reopen Wednesday February 8th was the day. If you know me I love a good charcuterie board and that’s what this place is all about.
Ribbon ceremony was at 4:30 and we got there shortly after 5:00. I didn’t know what to expect or if there would even be room for us to be seated. Well my worries were at ease when we walked in. There is no hostess stand. You walk in and the bar area greets you with 63 beers on tap. You can start your tab there and use it throughout your visit.
We placed our drink order and I proceeded to ask all the important questions that I do. So they explain the whole building is open for exploration while your there or waiting on your board. We proceeded to the back of the restaurant where the charcuterie boards are ordered. There is a bar area there so you can sit there and watch them or go find a seat elsewhere.
We decided to go upstairs and watch from above. The space is an old bank and I was surprised by the height. The ceiling is a good 30+ ft high with intricate woodwork.
Later in our visit we found the original build receipt for $179,000 in 1930. I couldn’t imagine the cost to rebuild in 2023.
We found a small table for two by the overlook and waited for food. There are multiple tables and seating that accommodates multiple size parties.
Back to the boards, they offer numerous boards with different price ranges. They come with two meats and two cheeses with all the goodies.
There is a Cajun theme, seafood theme, regular board and the Best of the Best. You know I had to order that one.
You can buy items individually to a certain point. I forgot to ask but all the boards had fresh bread sliced. Not sure if that is made in house or from a local vendor. We waited about 15-20 minutes for our board to arrive. The ingredients are served on a slate board and it’s full edge to edge with goodness. Boards are made to serve 2-4 but that is all relevant to if your hungry or not.
We decided to get the dessert board but I told her I was in no hurry so take time making it while we explored more. I knew the bank vault was in the basement so we headed there.
The whole basement is open to explore and there are also restrooms down there. They haven’t figured it out yet but there is going to be a safe deposit program where you rent a box by the year. For the larger boxes they are going to have specially made barrels of bourbon and you buy a bottle and store it there. That program is still in the works so I’m not going to speculate all the details.
At that time I realized I didn’t have my table marker 24 in my hand. They give you markers when you order so they know where to take your food when it’s ready. I figured I must have left it up at the table so we went back upstairs and our other board was there waiting. That was an oops on my behalf but know one had bothered it or ate it all. They also have a huge wine selection that they sell at state minimum so you can take it to go or drink there. If you decide to drink it there they charge $8 bottle fee to open.
There are also self serve fresh water stations on the first and second floor. They also have 4 meads on tap and a few Strong ports. I talked to both owners and they answered all of my questions that I had for the night. I almost forgot to mention they are adding a bourbon bar upstairs. The one lady I talked to said they were starting that very soon. You can go upstairs and see the template and design for that. It was definitely a good date night for the wife and I and we will be back sooner than later. I would allow 90 minutes for a good experience. We stayed around 3 hours but we were just enjoying each others company and the atmosphere. Definitely two thumbs up and I’m grateful to this addition to downtown Troy. Can’t wait till the new pizza place opens. I’ll definitely be there to support them and enjoy that.

Dayton at Work and Play: Umoja East & Central African Market

February 9, 2023 By Bill Franz

Angelique Nyambanguka came to Dayton from the Congo 7 years ago. She started Umoja East and Central African Market last year at 2601 Stanley Avenue. It’s one of the three international markets in Old North Dayton. The shop is filled with items from Africa.

Angelique showed me around the shop and I ended up buying some tea from Rwanda. As we talked, Angelique apologized that her English was not perfect. When I learned that she speaks four languages I suggested that she shouldn’t feel bad if she fails to speak them all perfectly.

Here she is showing me some shoes from Africa.

Dayton At Work and Play: U. S. International Foods

February 8, 2023 By Bill Franz

Old North Dayton has always been home to immigrant groups. In the early 1900’s the area had the Kossuth Colony, built to house immigrants from Hungary. There was a 12 foot fence all around their neighborhood. This was so unusual that it attracted visitors. People took the streetcar to “see for themselves the strange fenced-in settlement of North Dayton.”

Now there are three international markets in Old North Dayton serving different immigrant groups. Monday afternoon I visited all three. My first stop was U. S. International Foods, a small shop at 2106 Old Troy Pike.

The shop has Russian and Turkish items. The sales clerk spoke only Russian, but the packaging helped me understand most of the products, like these Kopobka cookies.

I’ll tell you about another international market tomorrow.

Dayton Donut Festival On Tour Kicks Off Friday

February 7, 2023 By Dayton937

Started in 2021, the 3rd Annual Dayton Donut Fest On Tour kicks off an eleven day run featuring 11 local donut shop participating.  According to Lisa Grigsby, co-founder of Planned2Give, this event was created during Covid, a time when traditional fundraising events just couldn’t happen. But it was such a success, that they’ve continued it.

For $30 ticket buyers get a booklet that includes a coupon for 2 free donuts from each of the participating donut shops.  They’ve got from February 10th – 20th to visit all the shops and pick out their sweet treats. It’s a great family friendly
event, too!

Since Valentine’s Day falls within this promotion, it makes a great gift for loved ones and the last day of the event is President’s Day, which many people have off, so you can plan on doing a donut feast that day.

Participating Donut shops include:

  • Ashley’s Pastry Shop
  • Bear Creek Donuts
  • Bill’s Donut Shop
  • Donut Palace
  • Duck Donuts
  • Hole N One Donuts
  • Jim’s Donut Shop
  • Stan The Donut Man
  • W. Social Tap and Table
  • The Donut Haus Bakery
  • The Neighborhood Nest

Every event Planned2Give produces has a charity component to it and this beneficiary of the Donut Festival is Hannah’s Treasure Chest. They  work exclusively with community partners and do not interact directly with the families they serve. Here are some more facts about how they operate:

• We currently work with 75 partners throughout Southwestern Ohio, including social service agencies, nonprofits, and schools.
• these partners can submit care package requests for any number of their clients (children in need).
• These care packages typically include clothing (daytime clothes, pajamas, coats, shoes, socks, underwear, etc.), diapers, toys, books, baby equipment such as car seats and strollers, bed sheets, and more. Some requests are for only one thing, such as a coat or car seat.
• Each family can request items every three months.
• The $100 includes our bed program, where we give cribs and toddler beds to children through age 3.
• We serve children ages birth-age 18. We also help mothers-to-be who are scheduled to give birth in the next two months.
• We receive no government funding and rely on grants and donations from the community to operate.
• In 2022, we distributed over 392,000 items to over 6,200 children, which equals over 7,500 items to 120 children per week.
You can pick up a $30 ticket booklet at the following times/spots:

“We feel incredibly honored to re-open Crafted & Cured to serve the greater Dayton community. We’ve missed our clientele and we look forward to foraging new relationships in the community of Troy and beyond. Everyone’s been incredibly supportive,” expressed Andy Routson and Christian Alvarez, co-owners of Crafted & Cured.

Crafted & Cured’s new location at 8 S Market St., holds significant historical value to the area, originally constructed in 1929 as The First Troy National Bank (formerly known as US Bank). During soft opening events, customers captured photos exploring the original architecture and bank features, specifically enjoying the Safety Deposit Vault, one of two original vaults in the space.

“Crafted & Cured will provide a unique dining environment in one of Troy’s most iconic structures. There is no doubt that this location will become a regional destination for people wanting a relaxing experience in a truly distinctive atmosphere.

This will be known as a place for people to spend time to sit and talk. There are no televisions, and the furnishings are inviting. There are few places like this anywhere and we are fortunate to have something like this in Troy,” explained Wade Westfall, landlord and owner of Four Sons Development.

Dayton Fine Art Store To Close

February 6, 2023 By Dayton937

The Hue House, a fine art supply store and studio, which opened in Aug of 2020 on Fifth Street in St. Anne’s Hill historic neighborhood will be closing.  Owners  Dana and Ryan Vingris were “really excited to bring easy access to fine art supplies and expertise to Dayton’s vibrant arts community.”

They posted this announcement on their Facebook page:
With a broken and heavy heart, we have made the difficult decision to close Hue House mid-March.
The store has really struggled for the last two years. At the end of December we took a long and hard look at the numbers along with the other variables that have made business difficult. The sales data paired with supply chain shortages, significant price increases of goods and shipping, supplier challenges and the residual effects of the pandemic painted a very clear picture of something that is no longer sustainable. We have worked to hang on as long as possible but are out of grit and resources to keep things going.
So many of you have become wonderful friends and an extension of our family and for that we are ever grateful. We appreciate those of you who made a choice to shop local when possible and supported the store.
While the store is closing, we are fortunate to be able to take away the important things – the relationships. We will continue to be around Dayton and hope to stay in touch while we take time to focus on our family and rebuild.

Dana, Ryan, Rowan and Margot

Starting Wednesday, the store will be discounted 40%. Additionally, we will be selling tables, shelving, storage lockers, flat files, displays, studio equipment and other miscellaneous store items. Information on what is available will be available in coming weeks. We plan to have regular hours for the month of February and will have we adjusted schedule in March that will be announced at a later date so please continue to follow on social media for updated hours and schedule information.
We will honor existing gift cards while the store remains open but will no longer be selling new gift cards. Monthly discounts will no longer apply during the closing sale.

There’s a New Bloody Mary Champ in Town!

February 5, 2023 By Dayton937

Today over 400 guests celebrated the beloved brunch cocktail. A bloody mary, at its essence, is built of tomato juice and vodka. Some add Worcestershire sauce, some citrus or spices and these drinks are often further embellished by all sorts of add-ons, twists and turns as garnishes. And that’s just what a dozen local bartenders did today, using  Lily Water Vodka  from Dayton Barrel Works. Planned2Give Co-founder and event co-producer Jeff Jackson said, “it’s great to bring this back after 2 years off due to covid, and even more gratifying to know that so many people came enjoy some bloody mary’s for a great cause.”

Participating bartenders came from Another Broken Egg,  Blox Spiked Ice, Brixx Ice Co, Dublin Pub, Fifth Street Brewpub, Jaqua’s at the Greene, Loose Ends Brewing Company, Mercenary Bartenders, RADS, The Roosevelt Room, W. Social Tab and Table and Wheat Penny.

Variations included Fifth Street Brewpubs Bloody McLain made with Mezcal, Wheat Penny’s that was made with a frozen sorbet, Another Broken Egg used a pepper infused vodka, while others had secret recipes they wouldn’t share.  And the garnishes, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit, cheese, vegetables, bacon and so much more. Scott Conrad, from The Vue Ultra Lounge,  who tied for the winner of this event  its second year tied with Scott Conrad, and in year 3 Scott took the undisputed  top prize, was back as an alumni serving up  his Rad’s Bloody Mary Mix, which he launched after his success at the Showdown.  While he’s not eligible to win any more now that’s he’s gone commercial with his RAD’s Bloody Mary mix, he may have had one of the coolest treats at his table, a gravy fountain to go with the biscuits he was serving up provided by Centerville Pizza.

Newcomer to the event, Blox Spiced Ice‘s Stephanie Brown, truly took it over the top with her garnish and it was a hit and took the best garnish title. On a fleurs de lis skewer you got bourbon chicken, andouille sausage, creole spiced shrimp, pickeled okra and a crawfih risotto ball.

They always say you eat with your eyes first so having an inviting table is a big deal and for The Roosevelt Room, located in Liberty Center, they walked away with Best Table Decor.

As a special treat, Speakeasy Sweets was on hand with their Bloody Mary Muffins.

And voted for by the people, Dayton Best Bloody Mary winner by a landslide was made by , Loose Ends Brewing Company! General manager Kent Loose says he attributes their win to “having a well balanced cocktail mix.” They walked away with $500 cash and bragging rights!  Well at least until we do it all again on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Proceeds from the Bloody Mary Showdown were donated to The Castle, a gathering place of trust and friendship which supports people with mental illness and disorders to achieve their highest level of competence  and independence.”

Advice For Artists From A Grant Writer

February 4, 2023 By Curtis Bowman

This past year, I applied for an Ohio Arts Council Excellence Award in the visual arts category. I am a writer. “Why,” you say, “would you apply in an artists category that is not your discipline?”

Because I wanted to go through the process.

As an advocate for artists and the arts, I encourage application to grants and residencies. One of my visual artist friends said she doesn’t apply because the process is demoralizing. I wondered if the process is different for writing and the visual arts, so I applied in the painting category. You will not be surprised to hear I was not awarded excellence recognition in the painting category. It may surprise you, as it surprised me, that my score was not the lowest, and that the comments did not treat my works as abominations.

This fact answered my question about my artist friend’s reluctance to apply. It is not the judges’ opinion of the works that feels demoralizing, it is her own. The Ohio Arts Council, like many other grantors, asks artists to describe their works. As a writer, describing what the canvas was supposed to achieve was easier than making the canvas say that itself. For my friend, having to put into words that which is on the canvas is excruciating. There is a reason she chose to be a creative in a visual medium.

Still, I encourage her, and all artists in all disciplines to apply for grants and residencies. In my experience, the application process offers an opportunity to consider your creative practice from an intellectual distance.  Even when in applying in a discipline that is not my primary creative field, the questions on the application forced me to consider my process. How had I created the paintings submitted with the application? How are they representative of my creative work, as a portion of a larger body of a creative work. What do the works represent? What was my inspiration? Why did I choose the medium I used to express that feeling or idea? This part of the application process is tough, and may be a struggle the first time, but like performance of any task, improves with practice.

In 1437 Cennino Cennini  wrote in his Treatise on Painting, “what will happen if you practice drawing in pen? You will become expert, skilled, and able to draw from your imagination.” As artists, we’re all painfully aware of our first works, and many of us cringe over the technical errors and unoriginal  ideas of those first efforts. The difference between those works and our current work is experience. The same is true of grant applications. So, practice. Approach grant applications as a practice prompt. Give yourself plenty of time to consider and answer the questions. Answer the questions for yourself, and don’t think about the panel. Then go back and read the application as if you were reviewing that of another artist.  You are thinking “I am too busy to do that.” But, I promise, the process of applying will elevate your understanding of your art.

The work I did on the application for the Ohio Arts Council visual arts award has impacted my other creative work. The process has made me contemplate my creative drive: why I create and how I create. Answering the questions on the application made manifest for me that I must create. I am writing with a voice and a message. I am an artist. And the Ohio Arts Council awards?  I intend to keep the application process as part of my creative practice, and I hope to see you at a panel review session in the future.

Mike-Sells To Close

February 1, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Luke Mapp

The rumors are true. Mikesell’s is closing down it’s operations. A spokesperson has said they are “wind-down its manufacturing, distribution, and administrative operations to proceed with an orderly liquidation of its assets.” The liquidation of its assets will begin immediately and continue over the next several months.

“Although the terms have not yet been finalized, we understand the desire to keep products available, and are working to facilitate the necessary conversations for approvals that will allow for an uninterrupted supply of Mikesell’s products,” that same spokesperson said.

“To continue to protect the Mikesell’s brand, so it can remain viable in the market and continue to move forward, Mikesell’s is announcing that it intends to transition all Mikesell’s brand and IP rights to another quality snack food manufacturer, as soon as possible,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.

“The Mikesell’s family and team wish to thank the community, consumers and partners for their love and support over the past 112+ years,” shares Luke Mapp, President of Mikesell’s. “Our family will long remember the fan love, the friendships and the wins along the way the most.”

Mikesell’s History:

D.W. Mikesell and his wife operated a business selling dried beef and sausages from two rooms on South Williams Street in Dayton, Ohio. Then came the opportunity to buy some potato chip equipment and the Mikesell’s Potato Chip Company was born.

1925

The Mikesell Company saw a need for a unique logo. It was decided that a “play on words” using the Mikesell name should be used. A hyphen was added making the trademarked Mike-sell’s name. The hyphen remained for over 85 years.

1955

D.W. Mikesell and Guy Lombardo are pictured here tasting a chip right off the conveyer belt. Lombardo exclaimed that the chips were “Music to his Mouth.” In the 1950s, the chips were put into cellophane and glassine bags before they lost any of their crisp flavor. Today, the materials have changed, but the freshness and quality remains the same.

1965

Daniel W. Mikesell passes away at the age of 82.

1987

1987 was an historic year for Mikesell’s fans across the country. With the introduction of the Chipper Shipper program, fans from all over could order direct and have them shipped to their door.

2010

Celebration of Mikesell’s 100th Birthday! Stay tuned for more great milestones in our next 100 years.

What’s on Screen at The Neon

February 1, 2023 By Jonathan McNeal

We had a very solid weekend at THE NEON with nice, steady business for all screenings. Thanks to everyone who came out to support our 2 big Academy Award contenders – LIVING and WOMEN TALKING – as well as CAROLE KING: HOME AGAIN. It felt great to have so many people enjoying films with us. Both films are going to stick around for another week, and you still have a chance to see CAROLE KING this evening if you missed it on Sunday.

“Open Caption Mondays” continue to be well-received. On Monday, Feb. 6, WOMEN TALKING and LIVING will be presented with Open Captions. As a reminder, seating is no longer assigned on Mondays-Thursdays for traditional engagements.

Need a refresher regarding our current engagements? Click the images below to watch each film’s trailer.

LIVING:

WOMEN TALKING:

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS:ONE MORE SCREENING TONIGHT! Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 – CAROLE KING: HOME AGAIN – LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK. Tickets $12.50 each – available now!

“CAROLE KING: HOME AGAIN – LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK, which presents musical icon Carole King’s triumphant May 26, 1973 homecoming concert on The Great Lawn of New York City’s Central Park before an estimated audience of 100,000. The complete multi-camera 16mm footage filmed and recorded by Lou Adler in 1973 has never before been released.” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer!

TICKETS ARE REALLY MOVING NOW! MIDWEST PREMIERE of WRONG REASONSwith visiting director (and Middletown, Ohio native) Josh Roush. “When an ambiguously intentioned masked man kidnaps a drug addicted punk singer, it triggers a police investigation as well as a media circus.” This film was exec-produced by and stars Kevin Smith. It will screen Saturday, February 4 at Noon, and ticket are $12.50 each – available now! Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
“On February 9, 2023, at 6:00 pm, The Miami Valley School will present PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR: BEYOND THE MASK. The filmmaker, Frederick Lewis, a professor at Ohio University, will be on hand to introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion. The screening, which is presented through The Miami Valley School’s Speaker Series, is free and open to the public. Interested guests may register online at this LINK. BEYOND THE MASK is a feature-length documentary on the life and legacy of the first African American poet/writer to gain international fame. Born to former slaves in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) is best remembered for his poem “We Wear The Mask” and for lines from “Sympathy” that became the title of Maya Angelou’s famous autobiography I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS. More than eight years in the making, BEYOND THE MASK received major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional support from Ohio Humanities.” (taken from press notes)
Among so many surprises with this year’s Academy Award nominations was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough for “Best Actress” in a film called TO LESLIE. We think this film is worth seeing on the big screen…not only because of Riseborough’s incredible performance, but because it also stars Dayton’s own Allison Janney. TO LESLIE will screen 2 times in February – Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4:00 and Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30. Tickets are on sale now! Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
ONLY A COUPLE TICKETS REMAIN! “While there is nothing wrong with the de rigueur heart-shaped box of chocolates or calling in that dedicated love song to Delilah on your way home from work, THE NEON is giving you a chance to change it up this Valentine’s Day with a date night showing of the 25th Anniversary of YOU’VE GOT MAIL. In addition to the movie, the cocktail and desserts will be a nod to NYC’s Café Lalo, an iconic landmark restaurant made popular by the movie in the 90s. Tickets are available now until sold out. $25 includes a movie ticket, an adult beverage (wine, beer, or house cocktail), a small popcorn, and dessert from the former owner of St. Anne the Tart (and current board member at THE NEON), Megan Smith. YOU’VE GOT MAIL has two local ties as well! Dave Chappelle played Kevin Jackson, best friend to Tom Hanks’s character, Joe Fox. Additionally, Mary Beth Kuhn of Germantown was an art director on the film.” (Megan Smith) Tickets are available at our box office or via our official site!
“Homelessness is a Humanitarian Crisis in the United States. Join us for a screening of LEAD ME HOME – Feb. 15 at 4pm. More than 500,000 people experience homelessness every night in America. LEAD ME HOME is a short documentary (40 minutes) that tells these real-life stories giving audiences a rare, in-depth look at the scale, scope and diversity of what it means to be unsheltered and unhoused while calling into question uninformed attitudes and outmoded polices. After watching the film, the audience will hear from members of our community facing housing insecurity and have an opportunity to learn more about what we can do as a community around housing justice. In lieu of an entrance fee, we are collecting donations of socks and toiletries for the unhoused in our community. Donations will be given to St. Vincent Shelter. This screening is part of a week-long focus on housing in our community beginning with the opening of the National Building Association’s Eviction Exhibit on February 13, 2023 at the Dayton Metro Library.” (Sponsored by Kathy Rowell, Professor of Sociology at Sinclair in Support of St. Vincent Shelter System in Dayton.) To reserve your spot, please visit this eventbrite LINK.
“Did you know there are more than 32,000 mothers in America, many from conservative, Christian backgrounds, who fully accept their LGBTQ+ children? They call themselves “mama bears” because while their love is warm and fuzzy, they fight ferociously to make the world kinder and safer for all LGBTQ+ people.” This special, one-time screening of MAMA BEARS, with visiting director Daresha Kyi (who graduated from The Miami Valley School), will take place on Saturday, March 11 at Noon…and tickets are Free due the generosity of The Hope Collective – the church that utilizes our auditoriums for worship on Sunday mornings. (Doors will open on March 11 at 11:15 – tickets will be first-come, first-serve that day.)
National Theatre Live’s presentation of THE CRUCIBLE is heading to our big screen this March. The classic Arthur Miller play is “a five-star scorcher” writes THE SUNDAY TIMES, and TIME OUT writes “It doesn’t get much more spectacular.” “A witch hunt is beginning. Raised to be seen but not heard, a group of young women in Salem suddenly find their words have an almighty power. As a climate of fear, vendetta, and accusation spreads through the community, no one is safe from the trial. Lyndsey Turner (HAMLET) directs this contemporary new staging, designed by Tony Award-winner Es Devlin (THE LEHMAN TRILOGY).” (ByExperience) Tickets are $12.50 each and available now. Wed, March 15, 2023 at 7:00 and Sun, March 19 at 4:00
We were delighted to partner with The Human Race Theatre Company during their 2019/2020 Season – “Women of Influence: Their Power, Passion & Pitfalls.” PNC came on board to sponsor our spectacular line-up of films that spoke to each play in The Human Race’s season – and then the world closed down after our third screening. We are now pleased to announce that we finally have a new date for BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHE – Wednesday, March 29 at 7pm. If you purchased a pass for this series, it will still be honored for this screening. Otherwise, tickets will be $10 each – available starting this Friday.
