Cardboard Crowns Kickstarter Event!

September 11, 2017 By Brian Petro

Cardboard Crowns Logo

Opening in October 2017…

The intersection of board games and beverages is not a new phenomenon. For those that have been enjoying coffee shops since the late 90’s, there has always been a few well-loved board games on the shelves of our favorite place to grab a cappuccino to start the day. It was not until 2010 that two enterprising Canadians opened Snakes and Lattes, the first café to offer games as a reason to get some coffee with friends, not just as an added benefit. In the seven years they have been open, they have witnessed an explosion of venues that offers drinks and light snacks while gamers enjoy some beverages and explore new games. While many started with coffee drinks, there has been an evolution into craft beer and craft cocktails. Coming soon, a new venue in the Dayton area will offer a space to explore gaming with good friends. Cardboard Crowns will be opening up this fall at 147 N. Springboro Pike, and they want you to be part of the fun with a Kickstarter Launch Party this Saturday, September 16 from 12 PM to 5 PM at Warped Wing Brewery!

Head to the brewery to learn about the Kickstarter, play new games and enjoy great craft beer. At this event, you have the opportunity to meet the owner and manager of Cardboard Crowns and hear about everything they have planned for the cafe. They will be introducing the support levels for their Kickstarter at the event, but you can prepare with this handy list:

  • $5 – Show your support for Cardboard Crowns and get your name inlaid in a wooden hex in the cafe’s bar top.
  • $15 – Donate a seat for one of our guests with your name on it! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • $25 – Help us grow the cafe’s library by backing a new game for the cafe’s collection, adding your name to the game’s inside box lid for all to see! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • $50 – Donate a section of shelving that will bear your name for all to see! (Plus Bar Hex)
  • Cardboard Crowns In Progress

All his space for gaming in progress!

$75 – You helped us purchase a table for the cafe that will forever bear your name! (Plus Bar Hex)

  • $100 – Two tickets to the cafe’s grand opening party, a private event open only to Kickstarter supporters! Each ticket includes drinks, food, your name in one of the cafe’s games, and a bar hex.
  • $300 – You’re donating the coolest seating option the cafe has to offer.  Our 6-seater booths will make you feel like you’re a VIP for the night.  As part of this reward, you’ll get to pick the board game that will be framed and used to theme one of our booths; your name will go on a plaque in the booth, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a hex on the bar top.
  • $350 –  The ultimate party experience.  You and seven friends get the cafe’s party booth for the night!  The package includes two drinks per person, two food items per person and a dedicated board game teacher to help make sure your group has a night they won’t forget!
  • $1000 – The cafe will only have one 8-seater party booth, and you’re going to help us theme it and put your name on it!  As part of this reward, you’ll get to pick the board game that will be framed and used to theme the cafe’s party booth; your name will go on a plaque in the party booth, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a monster sized hex on the bar top.
  • $2000 – The back of the cafe will feature a relaxed social corner for folks to sit down in and play social/party games.  Back at this level and you’ll get your name on a plaque letting folks know who made the area possible.  Additionally, you’ll get two tickets to the grand opening party and a mammoth sized hex on the bar top.
Cardboard Crowns game collection

So many games to play!

All of this support is going into a gaming café that has been planned out and well researched by Ben Adams, the owner of the venue. Ben has visited many other of these cafes across the country and has worked hard to address the most common issues he found in each location. To cut down on the noise of many games going on at once, soundproofing materials will be used on the walls and in booth separators to quiet down the space. Access to the cafe and its collection of over 700 games will be just a $5 library fee per person, and if you are looking to play in a private booth, an extra ten dollars for the party can provide that privacy. As mentioned above, there will also be a larger space for party games and party booth for private events.

They have developed a rating system for each one of the games, so those that are just getting into the hobby have an idea of the involvement of the game. Green labels are less involved games, where a quick explanation of the rules by one of the cafe’s game masters should be enough to get a group started. Yellow labels are more complex, and there will be staff on hand to help answer questions as you play. Red labels will be very intricate, heavy strategy games which may require more explanation than the team can provide. And with over 700 games in the collection, not every staff member will know all the games.  Booths and tables will have tablets available that will provide videos to explain the rules of almost any game in the cafe’s collection.

This Saturday, September 16th from 12 to 5 PM, is the big launch party! You will have the opportunity to support this new venture while playing some games with the owner and enjoying craft beers by Warped Wing. There are even some hints about game giveaways that day. Ben and the Cardboard Crowns team look forward to seeing all of you this weekend!

Five Games To Introduce To The New Board Gamer

June 2, 2017 By Kim and Brian Petro

A classic!

I always loved playing board games as a kid. Monopoly, Sorry, Candyland, Mouse Trap, Life, I couldn’t play enough of them. More often than not, I had to twist someone’s arm to play with me, usually my mom. Fast forward a few years: I met my now husband and found out that his family really enjoys board games. Awesome! But not the games I remembered as a child; these games went to the next level. There were card games and games where you played tiles and games that had these really awesome contests between players. I was hooked. Each year his family visits a rural lake in Pennsylvania and there is no television and no WiFi. Just spending time with each other and yes, LOTS of playing board games. The first year I was asked to come along and I played all of these games. I was in heaven. I was also struggling to learn how all of these games worked. It can be totally overwhelming for people who love the oldies but goodies who want to transition into more modern gaming. Fear not gaming friends, we are here to help! We have compiled a list of five games for new gamers to assist you with that step into heavier gaming! We CANNOT stress this enough how much online play-throughs and reviews online help with understanding games. Without further ado:

  • Ticket to Ride: This is a train car laying, route/network building game that many consider to be one of the top games for people new to table top games. Your task in this game is to connect cities in the United States by train, based on cards that you draw. Taking a look at the game board, you will see a multicolor network of routes connecting different cities in the continental United States. Players need to collect colored cards that match the routes they are trying to build. When a route is completed, you may choose to build more routes until one player gets very low on trains. Then each player has one last opportunity to play any cards and place trains that they can on the board. At the end of the game, each player reveals their routes and points are tallied up to reveal the winner. It may seem like a lot, but this game really is pretty easy once you have played a couple rounds, but the strategy can be as deep as you would like it to be!
  • Sushi Go Party Board Game

    Sushi Go Party! (via Spielbound)

Sushi Go/Sushi Go Party: Sushi Go is a hand drafting game where you try to collect different sets of sushi to earn points at the end. Each player starts with a hand of 8 cards. Each time a player selects a card they want to play and passes their hand of the remaining cards to the player next to them. You continue to do this until all the cards have been played. Every card has a different way of scoring, from simply adding points to collecting dessert for the end of the game. The game is three rounds, so it goes very quickly. After each round, tally up the scores for each player. At the end of the third round, each player will add up their scores, highest score wins! Sushi Go Party is the reprint which includes the base game of Sushi Go, adding a board with various tiles that can be played that dictates what cards must be collected. This allows for varied gameplay, play for up to eight people and kicks Sushi Go up a notch!

  • Forbidden Island: This game is a cooperative board game where players play band together to gather the four treasures needed to win the game and escape the island. However, as the players scurry from place to place, the whole island is sinking. Players will move their pawns on the different tiles that make up the game board. Each game is unique because the tiles will be placed in a different configuration every time. Each player possesses a special ability to travel across the island and grab the treasures as the tiles are sinking, one by one. If you can manage to collect all four treasures and get every member of the team back to Fool’s Landing, you win the game! Co-op games are great for new gamers because everyone gets to pitch in and help each other in winning the game. It can be difficult to win this game, so don’t be discouraged if you lose. My husband and I lose this game all the time, but we keep coming back to it because of the challenge it presents and the fun it gives each player!
  • Machi Koro Board Game

Build your city to greatness in Machi Koro.

Machi Koro: Bright Lights, Big City: In this game, you are the mayor of the city. Winning the game requires you to build the greatest city among all the players. Each player starts with a few resources, and use those to collect money and build more buildings. Once they are built, they give the player special abilities throughout the game. Players earn money, and gain other benefits, by rolling either one or two dice. Each card has a number that when rolled will give players money. The game is set up where three stacks of building cards make up the playing field: cards that are activated with one die (rolling a six or less), Major Specialty Establishments, and cards that are activated with two dice (rolling a seven or more). Players take turns rolling the die/dice, collecting or giving away money and then purchasing cards to add to their city or building their landmarks. Play continues until one person builds all six of their landmarks. I really love this game because it is so different every time, but the mechanics are very easy to pick up. There are many versions of Machi Koro. We chose this version because it takes all of the current versions and combines them to give you the best version of the game. If you cannot get this version, then the base Machi Koro game with the Harbor Expansion is just as good.

  • Bang: The Dice Game: This game is a Yahtzee-style dice rolling game where players get three chances to roll the dice and press their luck to try and shoot other players. Who you are shooting at depends on the role you have in the game. Roles are kept a secret, except for the Sheriff, who must reveal themselves at the beginning of the game. Depending on how many players there are will dictate how many roles show up in the game. The Outlaws are trying to gun down the Sheriff. Renegades are trying to gun down everyone. And if the Sheriff is lucky, they will have the help of a Deputy. Players receive a character card that gives them a special ability that only that player can use. Each turn the players roll dice and use those dice to complete their secret mission. Players take wounds, shoot other players, or drink beer to gain life all with the threat of an Indian attack looming. The person who can complete their roll mission wins the game. I love teaching this game to people. Most are familiar with Yahtzee, so transitioning to this one is very easy and most people really enjoy the Wild West theme. If the wild west is not for you, you may enjoy The Walking Dead version of this game.

You get to roll dice AND say you shot the sheriff.

We decided to add a sixth game to this list because we feel like this is considered to be, by most people, THE gateway game:

  • Settlers of Catan: For many, this is the game that really started the board game playing phenomenon that we know and love today. In this game you are trading and gathering resources to build settlements, roads and cities. Resources in the form of wood, grain, brick, sheep and stone allow you to build up your civilization. This is another modular board game where the game board is never the same. Each tile represents a different terrain that gives the player on that tile that resource (i.e. forests give wood, hills produce brick etc.). Each tile also has a number placed on it which represents the frequency in which each resource is produced. You are building networks in the form of settlements on the game board which help you earn points. Each turn players roll dice to see who receives resources in the form of resource cards. Players need to be careful, though. If you roll a 7 then the robber pawn comes out to steal your resources! Resources are collected and then used to develop your settlement. You can also trade with other players or the bank for these valuable resources. The player who achieves 10 victory points wins the game! We both felt that this is a wonderful game for those gamers who enjoy the complexity of games like Risk or Axis and Allies. This game relies more heavily on strategy, which is why it is our variable addition to our list.

There you have it, our top five(ish) games for new gamers! Please keep in mind that there are so many other games that are wonderful as gateway games, many of which we went back and forth on for this list. Ultimately, these are the games that won. Do you have a favorite game that you think should have been on this list? Let us and other new gamers know in the comments. Happy Gaming!

Being A Nerd Is Not Dead: Welcome D20!

December 19, 2016 By Brian Petro Leave a Comment

D20 Opening Night

This place is going to become a critical hit.

Anyone who has ever sat down for a session of games knows the drill. The players all gather around a table, or several tables, and start to spread out cards, dice, and meeples. Beverages are chilling in the fridge, and friendly banter is flowing. Then the games begin. Sometimes you sit down to a long, intense game of Arkham Horror. It could be a night of a few quick games of Ticket to Ride, Smash Up, or King of Tokyo. Or you look at the four games just mentioned and wondered what the hell are you playing. When you started gaming, it was Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Of course, when you started gaming the drink options were Mountain Dew or Coke. Board games have expanded in the last five years like craft beer started to in the mid-to-late 90’s. There are stores full of European style and other modern games like there are stores full of craft beer from all over the world. These two forces have been emerging in other cities, and have finally made it to Dayton in the form of D20: A Bar with Characters.

The story above is probably familiar to Andrew Sparks, co-owner of D20. He has been a game enthusiast for as long as he could remember. His D&D game was strong, and it grew into a lifelong love of games and gaming. It is something that his wife and co-owner Chrissy Sparks have in common. They also share a love of craft beer, something he developed during his time managing Belmont Party Supply. D20 emerged from the realization that if this was something their friends enjoyed doing, why not invite other people to do it as well? After another bar concept had fallen through, he found a vacant cell phone store on Whipp Rd. to be the perfect place for his new concept. Then Andrew and his crew went to work.

D20 Games

There is a little something for everyone!

When you walk in and look around, everything in the bar was hand selected and hand made by Andrew. Even the stacks and stacks of games were brought in from his collection. There is a handful that are donated, but the vast majority are his. The tap list, covering twenty taps in all, were also hand selected by them. Not a beer person? They have already thought of that. Knowing that a gaming place was going to attract a wide variety of people, they offer a selection of cocktails and mocktails. Mead and ciders are available, as are teas and other non-alcoholic options. You need to pace yourself when someone pulls out Carcassonne. If you are planning on playing through dinner, have no fear. The owners have worked that out as well. Their neighbors at Peking Garden are willing to walk next door to deliver, and a wood-fired, artisan pizza place will be moving in soon. During their soft opening, they had more than a few visits from Cousin Vinny’s.

Their soft opening was a huge success. So much so that the owners extended it an extra three hours to accommodate all of their guests. But they are not going to rest on the huge buzz of opening night. They have events planned soon. They are working with the Ohio Pathfinder Society (Dayton Chapter, of course) to set up some game nights at their venue. They are also planning their affairs, introducing people to games like Cards Against Humanity and Settlers of Catan. Andrew is looking for games that are easy to explain to new gamers, introducing them to games that are different that old standbys. Though if you want, Monopoly, Life, and Stratego are available for you to play. There are games for everyone.

D20 Beer Menu

Roll a twenty-sider to decide your next beer…

Andrew and Chrissy want to turn D20 into a gathering place. With comfortable couches and plenty of tables, seating and unique games to explore, they are well on their way. The air was thick with chatter, and the bartenders were keeping busy with patrons celebrating a victory or tending the sting of a narrow loss. Craft beer enthusiasts in the area can come in and enjoy a few pints, and gamers can sit down and either learn a new game, like Hive, or play a familiar one with friends. Either way, Dayton has a great new hang out south of town. Game on!

D20: A Bar with Characters is located at 2144 East Whipp Rd Kettering, OH 45420. You can contact them at (937) 221-9873. Information about the bar, their tap list, and coming events is listed on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.
