Chicken Louies Making a Comeback

February 26, 2019 By The Food Adventures Crew 11 Comments

That famous taste you know is coming baaaccck !

Food Adventures has some secret scoop.  It is so secret in fact that we can’t release all the details of the deal, but we can tell you . absolutely that an iconic chicken stop is about to be reborn in Dayton.

Chicken Louie’s, a favorite for decades in the Dayton area, had a shop on N. Main St. and a store on the west side called “Lou’s Broaster Hut.”  Known for their broasted whole wings served plain or spun in one of 3 sauces, this “carryout only” spot became legendary in status.  Known for soulful sides, and late hours, people would travel miles or just walk up to the window to get a taste of Lou’s famous chicken.

Lou’s Broaster Hut was on 3rd Street

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE DEAL:

— In 1958, Chicken Louie’s began slinging wings in Dayton, and locals went berserk over the broasted style of cooked wings.  Marinated overnight, then deep-fried in a pressure cooker, the chicken had a distinct taste and the sauces complimented the chicken perfectly.  The menu featured wings, legs, thighs and breasts, and literally showed the price of each from 1 to 100 pieces.

Broasted Chicken and more

— Chicken Louie’s hit hard times in the turn of the century, as Lou had to take care of his ill mother.  He ended up closing for a while and selling to  his managing partner who ran the restaurant a little past Lou’s death in 2012.

— Chicken Louie’s was resurrected in 2014 in an unlikely place.  The same managing partner opened a side shop in the Super Subby’s restaurant in Miamisburg on Main St.  The shop served a limited Chicken Louie’s menu of wings, pies and broasted potatoes.  The location had spurts of greatness but never took hold in the Miamisburg community as expected.  As business dwindled, the Subby’s closed in December, 2018.

Coming in 2019

— Two private investors have stepped forward and bought all of the original equipment and recipes from the Chicken Louie’s establishment.  They will not only offer the famous broasted chicken wings, but they plan to offer the full original menu.  This means legs, thighs, broasted potatoes in butter, peanut butter pies, sweet potato pie, fish dinners, shrimp dinner, dinner rolls, cornbread and all the sides you remember.  Also available will be the 4 famous sauces: BBQ, mild, medium and hot.

— The plan is to open the first Chicken Louie’s in the city of Dayton proper, sometime before fall.  A site has been bought, signed and sealed, but we are not at liberty to disclose the exact location.  We can tell you that remodeling is about to begin.  The site layout will be similar to the popular carryout location on N. Main Street, that served up good food for decades.

Sweet Potato Pie

— The strategy is also to open a 2nd store eventually in the north or west Dayton area.  Again, we are not at liberty to disclose exact location plans, which would be premature of the 2nd location at this point.

Rarely is a Dayton iconic restaurant reborn from the ashes.  But, this will happen, and Miami Valley foodies will once again be able to enjoy Lou’s chicken.  Until the site opens, we will be licking our lips and deciding how many wings, pieces of shrimp and fish we are gonna order with our broasted potatoes.

See you at the window of Chicken Louie’s… real soon !

Shantz Express- Food Truck and Future Restaurant

August 21, 2018 By The Food Adventures Crew 1 Comment

The Shantz Express is here

We love Food Trucks.  I mean who doesn’t? Mobile, locally owned places filling up hungry patrons anywhere they can get on 4 wheels.  The inventive menus always allow for a Food Adventure.  And when the trucks form a rally?  It’s like a dream !  An instant food court powered by generators !

One such truck that has flown a bit under the radar, is Shantz Express Food Truck.  But lately, they have been making some big leaps and bounds.

HERE IS THE SKINNY on SHANTZ EXPRESS FOOD TRUCK:

— Owner Bill Shancey had a pizza place in Pittsburgh, before moving to Dayton more than 16 years ago.

— The menu features, Sandwiches, Gyros, Pulled Pork Nachos, Cheesesteaks, Subs, Pizza, Wings, Fries, Burgers, Dogs and Pierogies.

— They have just announced they are opening a restaurant at  5993 Bigger Road next to Bee-Gee’s Market near the Centerville / Kettering Border.  The location is near the Victoria Secret call center which could mean some serious lunch carry out business and they hope to be open in October and to continue to keep the food truck out as well.

Buffalo Hot Wings at Shantz Food Truck

— The owner is sometimes flexible and was able to make a private party with just a few hours notice.

We have visited the truck 3 times and always have been impressed.   Whether a Food Truck rally or a pool party, Shantz Express pleased the masses.

Here is our list of  MUST EATS from our times at this wonderful food truck….

“MUST EATS” AT SHANTZ EXPRESS FOOD TRUCK:

— BUFFALO HOT WINGS:
They are crispy with a kick and a little tang to them. These wings are what put Buffalo on the foodie map.

— GARLIC BUTTER WINGS:
Possibly the best food truck wings in Dayton. These are served wet, and with a few napkins. The results are quiet patrons gnawing on the wings in pure delight.

Pierogies in Garlic Butter

— THE SHANTZBURGER with CHEESE:
Have you ever had the burgers at the Rootbeer Stand or The K in Springboro?? This burger is just like those. It is a delicious taste of summer and a throwback top the burgers of the 60’s with bellhops. We loved it , great flavor on a soft bun.

— PIEROGIES:
Polish people of Dayton unite ! This take on the pierogie is a deep-fried, almost crunchy version served in a buttery garlic bath. The result is a mixture with the garlic mashed potato filling that is simply divine. Dip, bite and repeat for maximum effectiveness.

— THE CHICKEN PARM SANDWICH:
Deep fried chicken sandwich with a slice of mozzarella cheese and homemade tomato sauce. Pretty good stuff for a food truck ! His sauce is the same as Shauncey’s former pizza place in Pittsburgh.

—THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK:

Philly Cheesesteak

Flavorful, hearty and filling are the strengths of this sub. He must have spent some time in Philly learning the cheese steak trade…

Honorable Mention: The French Fries, which are slightly reminiscent of McDonalds… whose of course are the best. Also, try a GYRO but make sure to ask them to grill the onions and add extra tzatziki sauce. It makes it all good.

They do have pizza, but we found the other items to be the menu stars.

So, there you have it hungry foodies, your best chance for success when devouring some Shantz Express.  We look forward to the new “brick and mortar” place, as they say.  For us, it means enjoying Mr. Shauncey’s food year round !  Ohh, those wings though …..

Are you a Dayton area foodie? Food Adventures is your mecca !  Join us on Facebook for daily posts and here for weekly feature articles on DaytonMostMetro.

Feel free to browse our gallery below and we will see you at the next food truck rally !!

Don’t Fear The Reaper at Pisanello’s

May 2, 2018 By The Food Adventures Crew Leave a Comment

We got a Reaper Pizza and divided it in 4 flavors !

In the Dayton suburb of Franklin, one pizza reigns supreme, Pisanello’s Pizza .  This restaurant has quietly been spinning out pies for the past 30 years.  Inside the community of Franklin, they have gained a loyal, cult following.  Pisanello’s makes hundreds of pizzas each weekday and thousands of pizzas on the weekends.   Outside of Franklin, this place is a well-kept secret.  But now, The Food Adventure Crew is letting the masses know about this.

One of their biggest attractions, literally, is the Reaper Pizza  – a 34 inch monster with your choice of toppings.  They even have an eating challenge called the “Reaper Challenge” where 2 people must eat the pizza in 30 minutes to succeed.  But we say, order the Reaper pizza with a group and let the Food Adventure begin!

Now to learn a little bit about the Pisanello’s secret….

Welcome to Pisanello’s in Franklin

HERE’S THE SKINNY on PISANELLO’S PIZZA:

—Pisanello’s Pizza started in Alliance Ohio in the early 1960’s.  It branched out to Kent, Ohio and eventually Bowling Green, Ohio, in October 1964.   Jerry Liss, of Kent, Ohio, started the Bowling Green business  after working for Ron Pisanello.   Jerry chose Bowling Green, because of the growing student population of Bowling Green State University.  With his wife Sylvia, they ran the store for 50 years, to great success. It is still a success today.

—With over 15 franchises in Ohio and Michigan, the chain is strong.

— The Franklin Pisanellos is celebrating their 35th year in business.  Owner Tom Combs and Marketing director Bruce Horstman run a well oiled machine.  Busy weekends are no problem, as the staff is always hustling with great service.

— Staying with a family theme and atmosphere, no alcohol is sold or allowed on site.

Spicy Asian Wings – the best on the menu

— The pizza dough is made from scratch every day and the sauce is made in-house, with the famous San Marzano brand tomatoes from Italy.

— Sharing the restaurant with sister company TLC Catering, Pisanello’s hosts parties in any of the 3 floors of their building and the party rooms are incredible.

MUST EATS at PISANELLO’S PIZZA:

—THE REAPER PIZZA:
Behold the Masterpiece. This behemoth, 34 inch pizza is sliced into squares, although you can ask for pie slices. The one topping Reaper starts at $34.95 and the deluxe gets up to $54 bucks. You can get up to 4 different sections with different toppings.

—SPICY ASIAN WINGS:
An amazing combo of tang and heat, these are the best wings we have had at a pizza joint in the Dayton area. Although they are baked, they maintain a crisp crunch and stay true to the Buffalo Wing style.

—LOADED TATER TOTS:
Who doesn’t love tater tots? Jackie and Ragu devoured these on the spot during our visits. Get them loaded with cheese and bacon. Sour cream? YES ! or…. dip them in ranch or ketchup !

—ANY PIZZA:

Loaded Tater Tots

We were very impressed with the pizza on our visits. They have a nice selection of toppings and we have loved our pies from cheese, to loaded deluxe. The Hand tossed is our favorite style, aka the traditional style. Great Crust, great sauce, the foundations of what makes great pizza, and they have excelled at both.

—MILD WINGS:
The slight tang to the Buffalo Wing. Mild, yet a bit of flavor, this is the perfect wing to compliment pizza. They are great, and you could eat ton of them.

—CHEESEY BREAD:
A must eat appetizer at Pisanellos. The cheese topped crust is great for dipping and savoring. A solid choice to open the meal.

—KIDS MAKE YOUR OWN PIZZA OPTION:
The most fun a kid can have is making their own pizza, right? This is an ingenious meal where they serve the kids raw ingredients, of crust, cheese, and sauce, and the child makes their own pizza. You then give the pizza uncooked to the server who pops it in the oven and in a few minutes, the kiddos are eating their own creations.

Don’t forget the pizza by the slice deal “2 huge slices and a drink for $5.95.”

Also, we cannot stress enough the amazing beauty of this building.  The upstairs floor are refurbished party rooms.  They are perfect for your next meeting or get together.

So many great tastes, so little time.  Although this place has been here 35 years, so you have all the time in the world….

The bottom line is that this is a great pizza pub, with delicious pies.  Go there with some friends and try the REAPER… or go with your immediate family and get a pizza of your choice.  We are sure you will find it a tasty stop with friendly service.  It isn’t just Franklin’s little secret anymore ….

Who’d You Rather? KFC or Lee’s Famous Recipe ? Win $20 GiftCard

January 18, 2018 By The Food Adventures Crew 19 Comments

In a world of fried chicken, 2 chains have battled it out for decades.   They are Kentucky Fried Chicken and Lee’s Famous Recipe.

The colonel and the rooster have been going head to head for generations. But did you know these restaurants were started by related family members?

Today , Food Adventures heats up the family feud again and pits them against each other, head to head.  Plus, you get a chance to win a $20 gift card, just by commenting on which one is your favorite.

Yes.. you heard right…..

****COMMENT BELOW FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN a $20 GIFT CARD TO YOUR FAVORITE ONE****

So we ask you our patented question ….

WHO’D YOU RATHER GET IT ON WITH?
KFC or LEE’s FAMOUS RECIPE??

The Carolina Gold Chicken Little is KFC’s best item.

Comment at the bottom of the article and you can have a shot at winning a $20 gift certificate to tour favorite restaurant.  Don’t be a chicken.. do it !

The Big Ragu from The Food Adventures Crew breaks this one down.  Let’s see how the king of deep-fried food voted …

KFC TALE OF THE TAPE:
Founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, a Kentucky entrepreneur from Corbin, Kentucky who sold his chicken during the Great Depression. Sander’s opened his 2nd store in 1952. It was known as “Kentucky Fried Chicken” until 1991 when they changed the name to KFC. Today it is the 4th largest fast food franchise.

HERE ARE THE PRO’s of KFC:
—The Carolina Gold Chicken Little sandwich is a must eat, it is the best thing on the menu.
—Better Biscuits, no contest… but they always forget to give you butter and honey
—The whole wings are amazing, get 2 original recipe and 2 extra crispy
—Slightly better sides, even the alien “mashed potatoes and gravy”
—The apple pies that are offered at some stores are the same ones McDonalsds had in the 70’s and 80’s – deep-fried ones.
—The popcorn chicken is a winner, Nashville hot sauce will burn yo’ ass.

KFC’s HOT WINGS are no longer longer on the menu everyday – big mistake .

HERE ARE THE CONS’s of KFC:
–corporate made poor decision and got rid of two of their best menu items Honey BBQ Wings and Hot Wings
—KFC is not cheap…they price gouge a little
—They close too early

——————–Now, in the other corner …

LEE’S FAMOUS RECIPE, TALE OF THE TAPE:
After Colonel Sanders sold his franchise in 1962, he agreed to stay on as a promotional employee.  His nephew Lee Cummings worked on a new chicken recipe and in 1966 founded the first Lee’s Famous Recipe Fried Chicken in Lima, Ohio. Today, there are currently 142 Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken locations in 13 states across the USA.  Dayton, Ohio has been a national hot spot and testing ground for Famous Recipe Chicken stores.

Lee Cummings, Colonel Sander’s nephew started Famous Recipe Chicken

HERE ARE THE PRO’s of LEE’s FAMOUS RECIPE:
—The menu has a wider variety of choices country fried steak, oven roasted chicken,  liver and gizzards, white chicken chili, strawberry shortcake, etc..
—They offer an extra crispy SPICY version of their chicken too.
—During Lent they offer Shrimp and fish sometimes
—Nice prices, specials and deals help your wallet.

HERE ARE THE CONS’s of LEE’s FAMOUS RECIPE:
—The chicken is a little to salty
—The biscuits are awful
—The chicken fried steak is like a TV dinner Saulsbury steak

BIG RAGU’S VOTE: – KFC IS BETTER …

But what is your vote? Let your voice be heard.  Who’d you rather and why?  What items are your favorites?

A buttery biscuit from KFC – when they remember to give you butter and honey

**Comment below and be entered into our contest to win a $20 Gift Card to your choice of KFC or Famous Recipe.**

How Dayton Got Its Wings

December 5, 2017 By The Food Adventures Crew Leave a Comment

How Wings Came to Dayton Ohio

With the passing a couple of weeks ago of a local man, Gerald “Jerry” Paprocki, so goes the quiet passing of a legend.  It is how Buffalo Chicken Wings made its way to the Miami Valley.  Today the Food Adventures Crew lets you in on a little secret.

Jerry Paprocki (right) with his son David

—THE SKINNY ON HOW DAYTON GOT ITS WINGS:
The year is 1981.  Mr. Paprocki and his family have just moved to Centerville from Rochester New York, via a transfer by the L.M. Berry Company.  As Jerry sought out a local watering hole he stumbled across Urban’s Suburban Restaurant, (now Kettering Elsa’s), on Marshall Rd.

After checking out the menu he noticed they didn’t have Buffalo wings on the menu.  He berated the owner Urban Goeke, and told him he has to start serving them. As the story goes, the next time he came in, Jerry brought the ingredients and went to the kitchen and showed the owners and the staff how to make chicken wings right there in the fryer.  The recipe is still used at Elsa’s to this day.

Elsa’s Kettering used to be called “URBAN’S SUBURBAN” in the 1980’s

So next time you are on a Food Adventure try Elsa’s wings, or any in the Dayton area, remember the legend of Jerry Paprocki, the man who brought Buffalo style wings to Dayton.  As he would say “honest to God.”  Jerry had eight kids, Jeanie, Mary Ellen, Steve, Tom, Matt, Bill, Jon and Dave, so you know he had to have some good food recipes.  On a side note, Jerry was also influential on bringing Genessee Beer to Dayton.  It was a beer from Jerry’s hometown of Rochester, New York.  He talked the Whipp Rd. Kroger Manager into carrying it and soon many other establishments followed suit.  So here’s a toast to Jerry with Genny Beer and wings, thank you !

The Anchor Bar, Buffalo NY

But where did Jerry get his Buffalo Wing Recipe?  From the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY of course !

—THE SKINNY ON THE ORIGINS OF BUFFALO STYLE CHICKEN WINGS.
The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York is largely accredited with inventing the hot wings we enjoy today in many sports bars. On March 4th, 1964, Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar and late that evening, a group of Dominic’s friends arrived at the bar with insatiable appetites. Dominic asked his mother, Teressa, to prepare something for his friends to eat.

The wings at The Anchor Bar resembles Elsa’s wings as you can see

Teressa had some chicken wings, a part of the chicken that usually went into the stock pot for soup. Teressa deep-fried them and flavored them with a secret sauce. The wings were an instant hit and it didn’t take long for people to flock to the bar to experience their new taste sensation. From that evening on, Buffalo Wings became a regular part of the menu at the Anchor Bar.

The phenomenon has spread across the globe. Although many have tried to duplicate the Buffalo wing, the closely guarded secret recipe is what makes Frank & Teressa’s the proclaimed “Best Wings in the World”. But Food Adventures has the recipe right here….

THE ORIGINAL BUFFALO STYLE WINGS RECIPE FROM ANCHOR BAR, in BUFFALO, NY.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 1/2 lbs. chicken wing pieces
  • 1/2 cup FRANK’S RedHot® Sauce
  • 1/3 cup butter,melted
  • Garlic Salt
  • Black Pepper

DIRECTIONS:
1) Sprinkle the chicken wings lightly with garlic salt and black pepper
2) Deep Fry the wings at 400 °F for 14 min. until crispy.
3) Combine Frank’s RedHot Sauce and butter in bowl.
4) Toss wings in sauce to coat completely. Serve with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks.
Serves 6 people

Thanks for checking out this week’s feature and now you know how Dayton got its wings !

Extra! Archer’s Opens New Location Monday!

October 9, 2016 By The Food Adventures Crew Leave a Comment

Archer’s on Dorothy Lane Opens Monday October 10th !

Familiar food and faces, in new places, is what you can expect this Monday. Popular Centerville restaurant “Archer’s Tavern” expands to a second location tomorrow, and the buzz has been very positive from training day.

A new atmosphere, larger than the original restaurant, and an enclosed patio area are some of the featurea.  But don’t worry, you can still eat your favorites as they have kept the EXACT same menu !

Food Adventures was able to grab a table on training night, and we are pleased to announced that the food was terrific and the service was great.  They have a tried and true system which allows for quick, attentive service,  Their friendly employees are top notch.

A New Staff Awaits You

HERE’S THE SKINNY on ARCHER’S TAVERN, KETTERING:

— The restaurant is located at 2030 E. Dorothy Lane in the old Tumbleweed restaurant location.

— Grand Opening October 10th, 2016 at 11am.

— Hours will be :
     Sunday 11am – 10pm
     Monday – Thursday 11am – 11pm
     Friday and Saturday  11am-1am

Blackened Tilapia over Rice

— The restaurant will rotate 24 draft beer taps, with an eclectic selection of local, familiar and rare beers.

— Huge, 200 people seating area, with full bar area and enclosed patio seating

— Archer’s will continue to feature Buckeye Vodka in many of its cocktails and special events.

— Owners Mike Fullenkamp and Dan Apolito started planning for this location a year ago, after deciding to nix a deal on a Cornerstone Development location near Wilmington Pike and Feedwire Rd.

One of the Dining Rooms

As for the food, we have our patented “MUST EATS”  to tell you about.  Use our dozens of visits here to ensure you try the best of the best.  Drumroll please… start drooling as we present our …

MUST EATS at ARCHER’S TAVERN- KETTERING/DOROTHY LANE:

— AWARD WINNING CHILI:  Every year they hold a chili cook off, and the winner not only wins cash, but their chili goes on the menu for a year.  The result is the most flavorful chili around.  It is ridiculously good.

Fudge Brownie Sundae – yeah, that good

— ARCHER’S ALE: This is the Big Ragu’s “go to” brew at Archers.  It is an ESB (Extra Special Bitter), but don’t let the name ESB scare you, it is a light refreshing beer.  It is brewed in Cincinnati by Rivertown Brewery, ESPECIALLY for Archer’s Tavern.  Try this winner in a pint glass.

— GRILLED, BLACKENED TILAPIA OVER RICE: This will knock your socks off if you love fish.  A nice, clean , fresh filet.  The blackened seasoning gives it a perfect balance.  We suggest a side salad and rice for your sides to complete a perfect pairing.

— WINGS “SWEET AND SEXY STYLE”:  This is why you read Food Adventures, because we know

Enclosed Patio seating

things no one else does.  These wings are NOT on the menu, but available by special request.  These are wings with Dry Rub spice, drizzled with Spicy Garlic sauce, then tossed in Sweet BBQ sauce.  The result is tangy and slightly hot taste of joy. Probably the best wing sauce we have ever tasted.

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK: A massive, heaping sandwich filled with meat, peppers and melted provolone cheese.  You can also request cheese whiz on this monster.  We say, go for it.  This is how they do it in Philadelphia.  Your choice of shaved ribeye steak or sliced chicken breast for the meat.  Tip: ask for extra mayo.

The Bar Area

— TACO PIZZA: Good, flavorful and spicy!  The ground beef matches well with the cheese and jalapenos.  The fresh dough is a hallmark and we absolutely love it.

— STICKY BURGER:  Where else in town can you get a burger with Peanut Butter on it ?  The result is an incredible taste that mimics a peanut Thai taste.  In the 5 year hisory of Archer’s only 2 people have returned the burger because they did not like it.  TRY IT !

— FUDGE BROWNIE SUNDAE:  Oh mama…. the brownie is served hot, covered in hot fudge.  A scoop of vanilla ice cream tops that, and caramel is drizzled over the whole thing.  Turn on the lights and call the law, we dont care if we ever get well…

Salad With French Dressing

What great stuff.  A local eatery with spot on food, service and prices, just like the original.  This location should be a home run too.

Food Adventures would like to send congratulations to the owners and staff on their new locale.  It is a pleasant place, and is perfect for family and friends.  It will also be a great stop for those softballers, and other sports teams at Delco Park for after game dinners and drinks.

The New Archer’s Tavern in Kettering

May 3, 2016 By The Food Adventures Crew 1 Comment

Inside the cleared out dining room

EXCLUSIVE! Drywall is being demolished.  New equipment is being installed.  Things are just beginning to take shape at Archer’s Tavern’s second location, soon to be opened in Kettering.  The new restaurant will be where the old Tumbleweed restaurant was located on Dorothy Lane.   Food Adventures has the first peek inside the renovations, you won’t see anywhere else.   And one thing is for sure… this restaurant is gonna be big, both in size and excitement.

The ownership team of Dan Apolito, Mike Fullenkamp and Scott Dorsten are bringing their winning formula across town, but for now, they have been putting some sweat equity into the project.  Most of the work so far has been done in the kitchen area. Hammering and tossing of scrap material can be heard on any given day, and the owners aren’t shy on grabbing tools themselves, and diving in on the teardown.

It isn’t hard to imagine the new location being packed with new fans of their burgers, pizza, wings, beer selection and so much more.  Being across from Delco Park, “Archers’s 2” is a perfect place for that “after softball game” dinner and drinks.  Archer’s Tavern’s reputation is good food and reasonable prices, from their salads to their chili, the menu is delicious.

Want the scoop on the new location?  ONLY FOOD ADVENTURES HAS THIS EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK!

Dan Apolito & Mike Fullenkamp taking Archers to a new level

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— ARCHER’S KETTERING will be located at 2030 E Dorothy Lane

— The new location will bring that same signature menu that the crowds in Centerville have grown to love over the past 5 years.

— The restaurant will feature 24 draft beer taps, and an eclectic selection of local, familiar and rare beers.

— Archer’s will continue to feature Buckeye Vodka in many of its cocktails and special events.

— The seating area will be much larger than the Centerville restaurant

— The owners plan to open the eatery in July, given that the permits and construction finish on schedule.

MUST EATS:

—SWEET and SEXY WINGS:  You wont hear about these on any other food site, because they aren’t on the menu… it is a special request.  Sweet and Sexy Wings are wings with Dry Rub spice, drizzled with Spicy Garlic sauce, then tossed in Sweet BBQ sauce.  The result is tangy and slightly hot taste of joy.  Probably the best wing sauce we have ever tasted.

The assembled Sticky Burger

— THE STICKY BURGER:  A burger with peanut butter on it? YES!  The result is a unique taste, reminiscent of a Thai Peanut Sauce.   This burger is the Big Ragu’s Favorite.  It also comes with bacon and smoked pepper jack cheese.  This is a curiously good burger that you won’t soon forget.

— THE CHILI – They have a chili cookoff each year, and the winner gets their chili on the menu.  In other words, it is the best of the best.  You gotta get a cup of this chili,  great flavor and zing guaranteed !

—  THE TACO PIZZA: Muey Bueno ...They use enchilada sauce for the pizza sauce.  They add taco beef, cheddar and Monterey cheeses, onion, tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro.  Hot, spicy and ooh so nicey!

—  THE MARGHERITA PIZZA:  Fresh Mozzarella and a smooth tomato sauce is the key to this pizza.  Fresh basil leaves and Roma tomatoes top off this vegetarian pie nicely.  We cant believe we ate the whole thing!

— ARCHER’S BREAD PUDDING:  Made with Bill’s Donuts… need we say more?

Honorable Mention: The Gourmet Grilled Cheese – omg… the dijon mustard is brilliant and makes the sandwich, as does the buttery bread and chewy cheese combo.

Food Adventures is excited for this next chapter in the lives of Archer’s ownership.  They give a lot back to the community, and we wish them continued success.

SPEAKING OF HELPING THE COMMUNITY, TOMORROW WE FOLLOW UP THIS STORY WITH A CHARITY EVENT THAT ARCHER’S HAS HELPED ORGANIZE THAT NEEDS YOUR HELP !!

Dive Bar Tuesday: McGillicutty’s Pub

March 15, 2016 By Brian Petro

Entrance to McGillicutty's Pub

Welcome to McGillicutty’s!

When the biggest bar holiday of the year comes knocking, you sit down with your team and have a serious conversation about the bar where you are going to celebrate. A lively discussion commenced and the finalists were chosen. The finalists all had certain merits in the dive bar designation. The Final Four bars we decided on were Flannigan’s Pub, Harrigan’s Tavern, Mack’s Tavern, and McGillicutty’s Pub. We look forward to visiting all of them in good time, but the one we went for this week just ahead of St. Patrick’s Day was McGillicutty’s Pub. It has been a staple in the community for over twenty-two years, and ready to go for a celebration of all things Irish.

What struck me first about McGillicutty’s Pub (1980 E Whipp Rd, Dayton, OH 45440) was their lack of pool tables. It is officially the first dive bar we went to that did not have one. But they did have one of the biggest virtual golf games I have seen, and plenty of electronic dart boards to spend some time with. There are plenty of televisions as well, perfect for coming in over the weekend and watching your bracket either slowly rise to the top or crumble into a thousand pieces as the Cinderella teams start to emerge. It is off the beaten path enough you should be able to find a seat with your twenty-two ounce beer without a problem.

Carolina BBQ Hot Damn Wings at McGillicuttys

So. Good.

The food menu is extensive. There is something for everyone, and it is all made to order in the kitchen. There is a wide variety of specialty pizzas, small appetizers, sandwiches, and wings. We did not get a chance to sample everything, but we know some people who did. The pizza was delightful, but I do not want to take anything away from the wings. The wings were delicious. The award winning Carolina BBQ Hot Damn Sauce was amazing. On Monday nights, the wings are $0.50 each, and we could not get enough of them. They were good enough to get one of our party that will not eat meat off the bone to dissect a wing so she could enjoy it. The sauce is on the spicy side, but not so spicy they will make you miserable. Even if they were, there is enough to drink to cool off your mouth.

The beer and cocktail menu…well, does not really exist. The beers they have on tap lean as far as this bar goes to the craft side of the spectrum: Blue Moon, Fat Tire, and some seasonals. They also have some classics on tap like Yuengling, which they were offering for $3.50 for thirty-four ounces on Mondays. They have tried offering more craft beers, but as we found out from our server and co-owner, the regulars like to stick to the basics. They have quite a few bottle offerings as well, including twenty-two ounce bottles of Bud Light for Sundays. Cocktails are more bespoke than anything else. They have their own unique specials, including a punch that sounds like a throwback to punches of yore: a variety of rums and available fruit juices, served so the whole table can enjoy such delights at a fair price. If you are there on Sunday, ask for their award winning Bloody Mary to get you through the morning.

Mug of beer at McGillicutty's

Just getting started…

Is this an Irish pub that will be doing Kegs and Eggs? No. If you really want one you can start off your day there on Thursday (10 A.M.) with an Irish Breakfast. Then you will be ready for green beer and specials on some of their more Irish fare. The Reuben sandwich and pizza will be discounted, and there will be an Irish stew added as a special for the day. The staff will also be working hard on their specialty cocktails like the Shamrock and Lucky Charm for those that may need to switch it up from beer for a drink or two. It will be busy on Thursday, and with some luck, their large patio will be available for all the revelers clad in green.

McGillicutty’s Pub is decked out in green and ready for St. Patrick’s Day, but it is a place to come and enjoy some camaraderie any time of the year. Everyone we spoke with was very friendly and willing to answer any question. Their Facebook page is the place to go to find all of their specials and to keep up with the events going on at the pub, like their drop in dart leagues (Saturday night) and karaoke (Sunday night). And if you are looking for a challenge, there is a record for drinking their thirty-four ounce mugs. One bold patron was able to consume eighteen in a day, with help from a friend to get him home after the feat was accomplished. While we will definitely be back for the wings and the light atmosphere, we will leave that record for someone else to break. Sláinte!

New Owner Breathes Life Into Dog’s Breath Tavern

September 18, 2014 By The Food Adventures Crew 1 Comment

Gary Leasure, New Owner of Dog’s Breath tavern

Been chasing your tail looking for a good watering hole?

New things are happening under the woof, err. roof at Dog’s Breath Tavern on Whipp Road in Kettering.  New owner Gary Leasure has already set some of his vision in motion.  Keeping with the dog theme, he has revamped the menu and promises even more improvements and innovations.

As for drinks, he is focusing on having beer available from every Dayton Brewery.  You could literally do a brew tour without leaving your bar stool.  He is working out distribution with some of the breweries, and has some Dayton beers on tap already.  Right now they have Toxic, Warped Wing, and Yellow Springs Brewery beer on draught.  Dog’s Breath will feature Ohio Breweries on tap as well.  Click HERE for full beer list.

Gary has owned bars before and he hopes to use his experience to make some big changes.  Some things to look for are pool leagues, dart leagues, karaoke,  NFL game specials, new HD TV’s, and bands every week.  The huge restaurant provides a great venue for live music, and a fun atmosphere for watching sports.  Unofficially, one area could be called the “Dawg Pound” and another the “Jungle.”

“Shed” what you knew about this place and let us “retrieve” the scoop on this revamped spot.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

 — The tavern is located at 1912 E. Whipp Rd in Kettering,

— Hours are:  Mon – Thurs: 3pm – Midnight,   Fri – Sat: 11am – 2:30am, Sun: 11am – Midnight

— FREE POOL on Tuesday nights

Homemade “Bones” like this Ham and Cheese Roll

— Wednesdays are Warped Wednesdays, $1 off Warped Wing pints,  and open mic night

— Thursdays Trivia Nights and $1 off all bottle or draft IPA’s

— Fridays is karaoke and Saturday they have live bands !

MUST EATS:

— HAND ROLLED “PULLED PORK BONE” (Egg Roll): The pulled pork bone is served with cole slaw for “dipping.”  They hand roll their homemade egg rolls. Let us tell you, this is their signature appetizer, and some good stuff.  If you don’t like pulled pork, you gotta try the Ham n Cheese rolls, the Turkey Club rolls or the Reuben rolls.  They are all fantastic and made in house !

— DEEP FRIED PRETZEL BITES: Yes deep fried..  This twist on a familiar favorite will make  you “roll over and beg for more !”  The taste is a bit crispier and the pretzels are dusted with a cinnamon spice and some soft of  hot spices.  The bites are served with a honey mustard for dipping that is essential.

Yellow Springs Beer, Warped Wing and more on tap NOW at Dog’s Breath Tavern

— THE DOUBLE BUTTER BURGER: 2 burgers and a mountain of a sandwich.  Here’s the secret: before they cook the burgers on the tabletop fryer, they slap each side with some butter.  You can taste the difference. And cheesey?  OMG they put a ton of American cheese on this one to hold it all together.  Top it how you want it and go town like a hungry Rottweiler.

Honorable Mention: The Buffalo Wings aren’t bad, and go great with a local beer.

The owner promises even more good things to come.  Look for the menu and kitchen to expand, and for some more unique food items and local beers.

So don’t bark, just take some bites at Dog’s Breath Tavern soon.  It is a heck of a place to enjoy some adult beverages, watch some football, shoot pool or take in a live band.  We won’t “hound” you any more.

Speaking of a howling good time, make sure you “LIKE” Food Adventures on Facebook by clicking HERE !  Over 3,000 loyal fans can’t be wrong !

Corleone’s: A Menu You Can’t Refuse

March 28, 2014 By The Food Adventures Crew Leave a Comment

The Manicotti Dinner at Corleone’s is a “Must Eat” (click to enlarge)

“Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. ” – Don Corleone “The Godfather”

Well,  The Big Ragu & Crew are here to do a service for you.  Today, we share with you a place you may not know about.  A kitchen that produces some great pizza, pasta and more.  In other words, let the Food Adventure peeps be your consigliere on this one.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Corleone’s has two Locations, one at 725 Lyons Rd. and the original at 966 Patterson Rd.

— Homemade dough everyday.  This ensures not only fresh pizzas, but tasty pasta dinners.

— Amazing Specialty Pizzas.  These are mafia boss of the menu.  Deluxe toppings, and themed pizzas like the Taco Pie, Greek Pie, Steak Pie will make your day.  There are many more unique creations with white or red pizza sauces.

— Calzones and Hoagie Sandwiches are the dark horse on the menu, and will “whack” your tastebuds.

— Unique menu items that only New Yorkers typically see, like Pepperoni Rolls and Sausage Rolls.

Great specialty pizzas like”Buffalo Chicken Pizza” at Corleone’s

— Carryout is available, and they have Delivery Service as well.

MUST EATS:

 — MANICOTTI:  Served piping hot , this meal is liberal on cheese and sauce.  It is absolutely delicious, and it is the Big Ragu’s favorite choice on the menu.

— TACO PIE:  Corleone’s serves a great version of taco pizza.  The fresh lettuce, olives and tomatoes make all the difference.  Send your hitmen in for one of these babies.

— BUFFALO CHICKEN PIZZA:  Tasty, tangy and even a kid pleaser.  Again a good version of a unique pizza spin.

— WINGS:  We were super surprised at how good the breaded wings were.  They are crunchy, crispy and ready for dipping in your favorite sauce.  Best of all, they are cooked all the way through !

— SPINACH CALZONE:  Served with marinara, the key is again in the fresh dough.  Filled with ricotta cheese (like a real calzone should be), it is a flavorful, filling meal.

Honorable Mention:

The Eggplant Hoagie is a good sub, capesh?  Did we mention it is a monster?  So split one with your favorite wiseguy and see what all the fuss is about.

The Wedgie: Want a Food Adventure in a plate?  Try a Wedgie!  No it is not the “grundy” you used to give your classmates.  It is a calzone with no ricotta cheese or tomato sauce.  It is cooked and then topped with lettuce and onions.  Call it an Italian version of the mini-super burrito and fagheddaboutit.

Surprisingly Good Wings at Corleone’s !

One warning, if you have a large group coming to Corleone’s, you definitely want to call ahead so they are properly prepared for your group of friends or paisans.  Also, the wine and beer selections are limited, so beware if you are looking for something special to drink.

Now “youse guys got” some good direction from The Big Ragu on a little known secret.   What’s not a secret is that practically all of the pizzas we have tried, during our numerous visits have been great.  From the top your own, to the seafood pizza, it is up to you to find your own favorite.   All we can do is lead you to the good stuff.   Trust us, it’s the best pizza and pasta spot that you’ve never heard of.   It is definitely a menu you can’t refuse…
