TIFF Day #2 – 2024

Hello NEON Community!

Today’s early films had an Ohio focus!

My first movie of the day was THE LUCKIEST MAN IN AMERICA, dir Samir Oliveros (USA) “Featuring Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell), Walton Goggins, and David Strathairn, this stranger-than-fiction drama resurrects a hugely popular 1980s game show and the ‘luckiest man in America’ who broke it.” (taken from TIFF catalog) Based on a true story about how a man memorized and beat the “random” lights on PRESS YOUR LUCK, the protagonist from this scandal was from Lebanon, Ohio!  This funny, tense, and upsetting film works on so many levels.  From it’s vintage-looking credits and camera work to the crazy set-up, this movie is a lot of fun.  Though the ending was slightly unsatisfying, I think this film ultimately works.

Shot largely in Wilmington, Ohio, my next film was NUTCRACKERS, dir David Gordon Green (USA) “Ben Stiller stars as a city slicker forced to look after a quartet of mischievous rural orphans in this fish-out-of-water comedy that speaks to the hidden talents in each of us just waiting for a chance to shine.” (taken from TIFF catalog) This film has a giant heart…and despite its formula-driven script (with some cringe-worthy moments) and its overly predictable turns, the film lands exactly where it wants to – and I think it will work well with audiences.  The 4 boys (real-life siblings from Ohio) are pretty great, and you’ll likely recognize some settings (and maybe even some locals).

My next film was my first public screening of the festival (meaning it wasn’t just industry folks – but open to the general public)…and the director & cast were there! (Due to last year’s strikes, hardly any films had casts in attendance…so this will be a nice change this year.)   THE LAST SHOWGIRL, dir Gia Coppola (USA) “A seasoned performer must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run. Starring Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dave Bautista.” From a good script written by Kate Gersten – someone who “was there” when the last big, old-fashion Vegas show closed (known as Jubilee! – which Gersten said was referred to as “the last of the tits and feathers shows” ) – this story seemed quite authentic, and Pamela Anderson said she had been “getting ready my whole life for this role.”  Touching and full of melancholy, Anderson and Curtis are great in this film.  And I love when there’s a moment in a film that evokes the crowd to burst into applause.  A solid film from Gia Coppola

My first documentary of the festival was MISTRESS DISPELLER, dir Elizabeth Lo (China, USA) “Sure to be a conversation starter and filmed with an astonishing emotional intimacy, Mistress Dispeller follows the work of a Chinese woman who practices unorthodox techniques to repair marital infidelity.” From the director of STRAY – a doc we played at THE NEON about a dog living on the streets of Istanbul – this film had a very intriguing set-up.  The lines of documentary ethics seemed to be blurred in order to get the material…but so was the story of the protagonist who is called in to make extramarital affairs disappear.  I loved a lot of this film, and the last 8-10 minutes were very satisfying.  The post-screening discussion was very enlightening and answered my questions…but I think there’s a much stronger 40-60 minute film here instead of a feature.

My 9th film for the festival and fifth film for today is a winner! WE LIVE IN TIME, dir John Crowley (United Kingdom, France) “Featuring gorgeously detailed performances from Oscar nominees Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, this inventively structured romance explores the question of how to make the most of our time in this world.” (taken from TIFF catalog) The energy was high when I arrived at the Visa Screening Room.  Hundreds of fans were cheering for Andrew Garfield…and he was just a few feet away when I was checking in.  When I got to my nosebleed seat (about 5 stories up), the crowd on the street was chanting “Florence. Florence.”  This town is so ready to welcome big stars again!
This gorgeous, nonlinear film did not disappoint.  With three different timelines playing against each other, the title resonates even stronger as we get to know a couple who are dealing with pregnancy, cancer and the day-to-day act of living.  It’s a beautiful story, and these two actors are at the top of their crafts…and having them talk about how they worked on this project has been the highlight of the festival so far.

Golden Lamb Begins Historic Renovation

Golden Lamb announced it is beginning major renovations on one of its four first floor dining rooms and kitchen as part of a master plan to reinvest in and refresh Ohio’s longest continually operating business.

 

In addition to this project, the Golden Lamb is proud of its recent and ongoing reinvestment into its historic property, including the General Grant Suite, a new hotel suite named in honor of the late Union General and 18th President, Ulysses S. Grant.  The General Grant Suite boasts rich mahogany furnishings, a luxurious private bathroom with marble floor and shower, as well as authentic artwork from the Civil War era. Updates also have been made to:

  • The Henry Clay private dining room, which hosts wedding receptions, private dinners and parties.
  • Refurbishment to the third and fourth floor hotel corridors, including new art that portrays the Golden Lamb’s colorful history and Shaker heritage led by the team at Caza Sikes.  Additionally, the Golden Lamb commissioned two signature pieces from Cincinnati artists Ursula Roma and Suzanne Fisher, now on display.

 

Renovations for the Charles Dickens dining room are now underway and will be completed by early July. The space will feature reclaimed Ohio hardwood floors, a new lighting package and dramatic wall coverings styled with a nod to Charles Dickens and the Victorian era. A warm library setting featuring keenly appointed furniture, antique lithographs and cherry dining tables from the Workshops of David T. Smith will bring the room together to ensure the feeling of the historic property is kept throughout.

 

Plans Integrate Heritage with New Ideas

“For our business to survive and thrive for 214 years, we’ve continuously evolved,” said Golden Lamb General Manager Bill Kilimnik. “This renovation will reinforce our heritage while writing the next chapter in our long history of being the place where friends, family and the community gathers.”

 

Kilimnik and the Golden Lamb ownership group worked hand-in-hand with an expert team to continue to evolve the vision of casual sophistication for the property in harmony with the heritage of the Golden Lamb.  The team includes Tim Herberth and Herberth Construction, a proven historical contractor, which is leading the project. Jenna Prenger of Reztark is the project designer, accompanied by Greg Snyder of the RDA Group on the architectural work.

Additional Plans in the Works

Over the next few years, Golden Lamb anticipates additional, significant renovations to the property, including its two other public dining rooms and its popular pub, the Black Horse Tavern.  Plans also are underway to establish Golden Lamb’s own farm to provide fresh, homegrown produce and meats to the Golden Lamb’s kitchen.

“We’re as focused on our guests’ dining experience as we are on the unique ambiance of our property,” Kilimnik said. “With these changes coming to life, we’re as excited about sharing our future as we are proud of our past.”

Golden Lamb Hosts Spirit of Ohio Dinner

Golden Lamb, in the heart of historic downtown Lebanon, Ohio, is proud to present a special dining event to celebrate the flavors of Ohio.

 

The Spirit of Ohio Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 24. The evening features a five-course meal created with ingredients from around the state of Ohio. Chef Ben Toney and Beverage Director Chris Fuhrmann will share the origins and history of the featured ingredients throughout the meal. The menu for the evening includes:

  • Reception course: Valley Vineyards Champagne (Morrow), Emmitt Ridge Farm candied bacon (Georgetown), Kenny’s Farmhouse Kentucky blue cheese, local honey (Lebanon)
  • First course: Lake Erie smoked walleye, everything bagel, cream cheese, Good Guys Gardens microgreens (Lebanon)
  • Second course: JP Mound oyster mushroom bisque (Wilmington)
  • Third course: 80 Acres Farm salad (Cincinnati)
  • Fourth course: Ohio-Proud beef strip loin, Chefs Garden Vegetables (Huron)
  • Dessert course: Valley Vineyards Bourbon Barrel Mead, Madisono’s bourbon gelato up-side down ice cream cone (Cincinnati), Maple Grove Farm maple syrup (Lebanon)

 

Guests will enjoy Valley Vineyards’ Seyval Blanc or Cabernet Franc during the meal.

 

Seating is limited. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Golden Lamb at (513) 932-5065. Reservations are $75 per person, inclusive.

Fall at Hidden Valley Fruit Farm

Down south on Route 48, is a great little place

Hay! Hay! Hay! Food, fun and fall flavors await you at The Hidden Valley Fruit Farm.  Just a few minutes south of Centerville on State Rout 48, Hidden Valley is the perfect place for a family Food Adventure, especially for little ones.  You can find pies to petting zoos, and scarecrows to strawberry jams.  They even have hay rides, pick your own apples and more.  We have great memories of coming here as kids.  This farm store is a perfect place to spend time with your loved onesand experience the sights and sniffs of the Fall season.

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY  on HIDDEN VALLEY FRUIT FARM:

Caramel Apples, anyone ?

—For over 60 years, located at 5474 OH-48, Lebanon, OH 45036 just a few minutes south of Centerville.

—10am – 6pm Sunday through Wednesday  and  10am – 7pm Thursday – Saturday

— Fun attractions include: Hayrides, pick your our pumpkin, pick your own apples, a gift shop in the 150 year old barn, an ice cream shop, and a petting zoo.   There is “so much room for activities”

Pumpkins Galore

— The Country Store is in a 150 year old barn.  It features a gift shop, a bakery, a produce area, grocery items and coffees.

— The small restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday, and features an $8.99 lunch for a pulled-pork sandwich and two sides – choices are potato salad, corn-on-the-cob, or baked beans.

— They grow 38 different kind of apple varieties.

There are literally hundreds of choices, local squash, fruit jams and so much more.  Over the years we have tried dozens of items.  Here are some of our favorites that have lasted from the 1970’s.  Without further delay.. we present our MUST EATS !

 

MUST EATS at HIDDEN VALLEY FRUIT FARM:

Fritters, Cider and Apples….

— GALLON OF APPLE CIDER:  Hidden Valley Fruit Farm is one of the only farms in Ohio that still prepares its apple cider the old-fashioned way.  Not from concentrate, their cider is pressed from select apples out of their own orchards.  The cider goes from orchard, to press, to bottle, then straight to the refrigerators.  Their is no homogenization, no pasteurization, and no additives or preservatives.  The best cider ever in the Big Ragu’s opinion.  Maybe it is the nostalgia, but he has never tasted anything like it.

— PUMPKIN DONUTS:  Small, sugary and delicious.  We have been enjoying these for decades.  Get a few extra, they seem to disappear into hungry mouths on the way to the car.

Local Honey

— GALA APPLES:  OK, so they have 38 different kinds of apples… One of our favorites is the sweet Gala apples grown on site.  There are so many others, some good for baking, others good for eating.  All of them local, right off the trees and delicious.

— APPLE FRITTERS: These are huge.  They are sweet, glazed and delicious.  So sweet in fact, that they are guaranteed to attract a bee or two if eaten outside.  Made fresh, they melt in your mouth and go great with a glass of milk.

— LOCAL NATURAL RAW HONEY: There are so many uses for this wonderful product.  From a drop in your tea, to drizzling over cereal, this honey is fantastic.  On toast or a spoonful from the jar, it is a wonderful treat.  Did you know that consuming local honey helps guard against allergies to local plants?  It is true with all natural honeys and the area they are produced.

— CARAMEL APPLES WITH NUTS: Nice sized apples dipped in a thick caramel coating, with the bottom half rolled in chopped peanuts.  The result is everything you could ever want from a salty and sweet treat.  Sinful? You bet…  If you want to go big, they have a “Thriller” apple which is the deluxe chocolate added treat.  Although they are great, we stay old school here and prefer the original.

Honorable Mention:  The Homemade Fudge.  All flavors.  It used to cause family squabbles in the car on our way back from Kings Island..

The Hidden Valley Fruit Farm is a throwback Food Adventure and a tribute to the old days. Rural America eats and treats, and simple pleasures like a fall Hay ride.

FOODIE ALERT ! The Lebanese Festival, one of Dayton’s most unknown and underrated festivals will take place August 26th through August 28th.  Every year,  our Food Adventures crew loves the various exotic tasty treats that this fest has to offer.  The Festival is located on State Route 741 at a church across the street from Meijer, not far from the Alex Bell intersection.  We are totally hooked from the fantastic aroma always fills the air to the incredible entertainment.   If you have not experienced the Lebanese Festival, you are missing out on one of the Miami Valley’s best parties.  With exotic food and fun to be had by all, the event is full of personality and culture.

This festival is a great place to browse.  Park your cars in the grass parking area, and make your way towards the large white food tent.  Inside the tent, was a large, easy to read menu at the “food line.” The friendly fest workers will explain that almost all the food is homemade. Your Food Adventure is about to begin.

 

To help you through this unique menu, we now present our patented feature.. our list of MUST EATS !

MUST EATS:

— MOUNTAIN BREAD:  Made in a station with a flatbread machine. The sign says “Mountain Bread.”  With a name like that, you gotta give it  a shot.

The Big Ragu loved this grilled flatbread topped with a nice garlic and sesame seed pesto like sauce and folded in half for easy eating.

— BEEF SCHWARMA:  The beef is sliced from a revolving spindle.  It is then stirred into sauteed tomatoes and onions.   It is topped with special cucumber like sauce and served in a thin flatbread which is wrapped like a burrito.  (Don’t like beef?  They have a chicken option as well).

— FRESH, HOMEMADE TABOULI SALAD: Tabouli is typically made with bulgur or couscous. It also includes tomatoes, finely chopped parsley, mint, onion and garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and salt. It is a fresh, healthy snack.

— KAFTA KABOBS:  Meat sticks, sometimes grilled and served on a skewer and seasoned to perfection.  This is a rare, hard to find specialty.

— FRESH HUMMUS: Smashed chick peas, made into a dip and served with pita chips.  Flavored with lemon juice, this simple treat is creamy and oh so good.

— SPINACH PIE: A delicately rolled bread with spinach, chives and cheese inside.  Bite into this unique appetizer, and you’ll be hooked.

— FALAFEL:  Tiny “hushpuppies” made with ground chick peas and cooked like a fritter.  Dip ’em in a ranch like sauce to get your kicks.

— THE DESSERT AREA:  Yes there is an entire area for delicate pastries and more. There were lots of baked goods that looked homemade. Most of them we had never seen before. Cookies called Mamool, Burma, Barazik and Ballourie. These traditional treats are great and many feature dates and pistachio as ingredients.

Honorable Mention: Stuffed Grape Leaves – little packages of flavor, that obviously take some time to make.

This festival is a full blown Food Adventure, with many more offerings to try.

CHECK OUT THE LIVE DANCING:
Make sure you sit at one of the tables in the entertainment area tent for a while.  Traditional music will play and some wonderful dancers will entertain the crowd. The performers wear elaborate costumes and sometimes hold fans and fabric which they used to dazzle the festival goers. No better way to enjoy a Food Adventure with authentic Lebanese food than with authentic music and dancing. Learn some great dance moves that you can use at a future date.

 

All in all, the Lebanese Festival is yet another unique eating experience in the Miami Valley. It was

Dayton Food Trivia, Rumors & Secrets You Don’t Know

“Read my lips, I want a damn steak from the Pine Club !”

Today we release some secrets, and Dayton Dining will never be the same again.  Call it  “Dayton Babylon: Little known trivia relating to Dayton Food and Restaurants.”

Sit back and enjoy, as Food Adventures gives you our favorite foodie trivia of the Miami Valley:

1) THE INVENTOR OF MARION’S PIZZA USED TO BE AN EMPLOYEE OF CASSANO’S:
Yes it is true.  Marion Glass was once an employee of Cassanos.   After leaving, he opened up a sandwich shop, then later his own pizza place.

 

2) IN 1988, THE PINE CLUB MADE VICE PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH SR. WAIT 45 MINUTES FOR A TABLE:
Oh, this happened alright.  As the story goes, the Vice Prez was forced to wait in his limo until the table was ready.  That’s one popular steakhouse !

 

3) HOUDINI ESCAPES FROM A BARREL OF DAYTON BEER:
The date was December 11th,  1916.  The place was at Keith’s Theater downtown, near E. Ludlow Street.  Harry Houdini performed the Chinese Water Torture trick with a Dayton twist.  He escaped from a 60 gallon barrel filled with Olt’s Beer, a Dayton brewed lager.  Maybe Dayton Most Metro can do something similar with Big Ragu on their Brew Tours

4) TOTENKO SERVES ROACHES TO FOOD CRITIC: 
In the late 1970’s, Dayton Daily News Food Critic Ann Heller was writing one of her first articles on the Asian restaurant near the Dayton Mall called “Totenko.”   When they served her meal, she noticed there were dead roaches in the food on her plate.  The restaurant closed for a few days with the intent to re-open, but it never did.  The business would later become Chi Chi’s on State Route 725.

 

5) THE WRIGHT BROTHERS WERE FOODIES WHO HOSTED HOLIDAY DINNER PARTIES:
The Wright Brothers were known for hosting extravagant dinners at their homes each holiday.  They would invite friends and family for these tremendous feasts.  Nothing like the food served by today’s airlines…

 

6) IN 1842,  FAMOUS ENGLISH AUTHOR, CHARLES DICKENS, VISITED THE GOLDEN LAMB WEARING A BEAVER HAT AND COMPLAINED BECAUSE THE HOTEL DID NOT SERVE ALCOHOL. 
Evidently, he asked for some brandy and was refused due to it being a “temperance hotel” (no alcohol).  He even wrote a pissed off passage in his American memoirs about the experience.  Sorry Charlie …

 

7) MIKESELLS IS THE OLDEST POTATO CHIP FACTORY IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE WRIGHT BROTHERS HELPED:
Dayton is home to the oldest potato chip company in the USA, 104 years old and still counting! The kettle cooked Mikesells are pretty much the same chips DW Mikesell peddled in 1910.  Speaking of which, when he first starting delivering chips by bicycle, his bike needed repair.  The Wright Brother’s bicycle company came to the rescue and DW Mikesell was back delivering chips in no time !

 

8) THAI 9 USED TO BE A PEANUT FACTORY:
Love the spacious dining room with the wooden floors and upstairs area?  That’s because the place used to be a peanut factory.  That’s what we were told by management when the restaurant first opened.

9) ESTHER PRICE CANDIES USES LOCALLY PRODUCED MILK AND BUTTER IN ALL OF THEIR CANDIES:
How about that, Esther Price was being organic and eating local, before it was cool.  You go girl.  No wonder we love these chocolates so much!  Get on with your bad, creamy self.

 

 

 

10) THE BAR AT JAY’S SEAFOOD HOUSE WAS MADE IN 1882 for JAMES RITTY’S PONY EXPRESS RESTAURANT IN DAYTON:
If you have had a beer or cocktail at the Jay’s Seafood bar, then you have experienced a piece of Dayton history.  This huge mahogany bar was made from 5400 pounds of wood.  That makes it the coolest bar in town … bar none.

 

11) IN 1970, PONDEROSA APPOINTED DAYTONIAN JERRY OFFICE to CEO.   HE GREW COMPANY REVENUE FROM $42 MILLION to $490 MILLION in the 1980’s:
Oh yes, wide ties, and aerobics with leg warmers couldn’t stop Jerry from bringing the supreme salad buffet to America!  Check him out in this 1984 Ponderosa Commerical.

12) THE BAR AT SWEENEY’S SEAFOOD HOUSE IS THE OLD BAR FROM TEQUILA WILLIES BY THE DAYTON MALL:
A little known fact is that this decorative bar, now at Sweeney’s, was the bar at the Tequila Willies Restaurant near the Dayton Mall.  The story goes, the previous tenant at Sweeney’s got it at auction and had it installed.

 

13) THE OWNERS OF PIZZA QUEEN CLOSED THEIR STORE TO OPEN THEIR DREAM RESTAURANT, EL MESON: 
Yes, The Castro family decided to dump pizza toppings for tapas.  Some Daytonians might have been disappointed at first, but now El Meson is a staple for bringing exotic South American eats to the Miami Valley.

 

14) THE HOT HEAD BURRITO FRANCHISES STARTED IN DAYTON:
Cynthia Wiley and Raymond Wiley from Kettering came up with the concept, and opened their first store in 2007.  It has been a hot commodity since, and they haven’t let it go to their “heads.”

 

15) THE OLDEST ACTIVE CHINESE RESTAURANT IN DAYTON is CHOP SUEY CARRYOUT:
Since 1973, this oldest active Chinese Restaurant in the Dayton area has been slinging New York style stir fry and Cantonese cuisine.  Try the Chop Suey, it will knock your Aunt Connie’s socks off.

 

16) THE PULL TAB CAN and POP TOP CAN WERE INVENTED BY DAYTON INVENTOR,  ERMAL FRAZE:
Ermal’s company, Dayton Reliable Tool Company started making his invention in 1959.  When  people worried about the sharp edges of the pull tab, he then invented the pop top on today’s cans in 1977.   Think of all the beer buzzes and caffeine fixes he made possible.  He is obviously the namesake for Fraze Pavillion and the tribute in Warped Wing’s Ermal Beer.

17) DAYTON WAS THE 2nd U.S. CITY TO IMPLEMENT THE FOOD STAMPS PROGRAM:
Dayton takes care of it’s impoverished residents.

 

18) INVENTOR OF THE ICE CREAM SCOOP WITH ANTIFREEZE INSIDE WAS THE OWNER OF THE RED WING ICE CREAM COMPANY IN DAYTON:
Ever use one of those ice cream scoops with antifreeze in it, so the hard ice cream is easy to scoop?  According to the owner’s daughter, that scoop was invented in Dayton.  Red Wing Ice Cream used to be located near the arcade. Now you know the “scoop.”

 

19) FOOD NETWORK CHEF MING TSAI’S FAMILY USED TO RUN A RESTAURANT IN THE 1970’s CALLED “THE MANDARIN KITCHEN”:
This restaurant was a pioneer in bringing gourmet Asian Food to Dayton.  The Mandarin Kitchen had a cult following.  Our memories include the restaurant having this amazing aroma throughout the dining room.

 

20) THE HAMBURGER WAGON IN MIAMISBURG STARTED BECAUSE OF THE GREAT DAYTON FLOOD OF 1913:
Sherman “Cocky” Porter served his own recipe of hamburgers to the victims of the flood out of a wagon.  They were served with no condiments, just pickle, onion, salt and pepper.  101 years later, the wagon is still a Miamisburg and Dayton icon, and the recipe is still the same.

21) CULP’S CAFE IN THE ARCADE WAS THE FIRST DAYTON RESTAURANT TO HAVE AIR CONDITIONING:
People like the sweaty Big Ragu appreciated this.  The restaurants hayday was in the 1940’s when they served 5,000 customers a day.  Yes, we said each day.  The “new” Culp’s Cafe is in Historic Carrillon Park.  It is also a ‘cool’ place to hang out ..

 

22) ORVILLE WRIGHT USED TO TEACH HIS NIECES AND NEPHEWS HOW TO MAKE FUDGE AND HARD CANDY:
Nothing like keeping the kids occupied with a little foodie fun.  If things had went differently, he could have been Dayton’s version of Willy Wonka !

 

23) BRIXX ICE COMPANY IS NAMED BECAUSE THE BUILDING WAS ACTUALLY AN ICE COMPANY THAT SUPPLIED DAYTON IN THE LATE 1800’s:
The restaurant across from the Dayton Dragon’s stadium, used to be an ice company that supplied most of Dayton with ice.  They were singing “Ice, Ice, Baby” back in the day!

 

 24) ICE CUBE TRAYS AND FREON REFRIGERANT WERE BOTH DAYTON INVENTIONS.
Ice cube trays were invented in 1959 by Arthur Frei, while Freon Refrigerant was invented by Thomas Midgley Jr. in 1928.

25) THE TROPICS, AN ICONIC RESTAURANT ON NORTH MAIN STREET, BROUGHT IN CHEFS FROM CHICAGO.
Now we know how they made their one of a kind cuisine.  Luring “windy city chefs” in with lucrative deals.  This restaurant seated 700 people at it’s peak during the 60’s and 70’s.  At that time it was one of America’s top rated restaurants.

Just south of Dayton, in the town of Lebanon, is a place where pub meets grub.  Doc’s Place isn’t your usual watering hole.  For example, they have a chef, Carlos Silveti who has culinary experience in Spain and Italy.  The result is a fresh menu in a historic building.  Doc’s place is located among the shops of  Downtown Lebanon.  The menu ranges from wings, salads and soup to steak and fish entrees.  Truly a treat, and truly a spot where foodies feel welcome.

Our Food Adventure ran the gauntlet of much of the menu, as  The Big Ragu tried fillet mignon, crab cakes, and fried green beans.   All of the menu items were spot on, even pub favorites such as wings and fried calamari.  The restaurant has personality, located in a building that was erected in 1896.

Half of Doc’s Place is a bar, and the other half is a dining room.  The popular place is not very large, so you can expect a small wait at peak times.  We suggest you get there early, bring a group of friends, and share the tastes of this family owned eatery.  Whether you try a hand cut steak, or some specialty items made from scratch, Doc’s Place is another Lebanon treasure.  Stop in and get a prescription for your appetite, because the food here is just what the Doctor ordered.

Big Film Announcements at The Neon – Fair Game, 127 Hours and More!

Hello Everyone.

Within the next several days, we will open 2 films that have garnered 100% reviews from numerous critics.  First off (only guaranteed to play for 5 days!!) is LEBANON.  This film will open on Friday and has been given a 100% review by Entertainment Weekly, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and many more!  Hurry down!

Next Wednesday (Nov. 24), we will have the region’s premiere engagement of Danny Boyle’s new film starring James Franco – 127 HOURS (which you’ll be hearing more about come Oscar time).  This film has been given a 100% review by Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, USA Today, Chicago-Sun Times, and many more.  Don’t miss this incredible, gripping film on the big screen.

THIS JUST IN!!    I started typing this e-mail on Wednesday evening, but I decided to hold off sending it because we were asked to consider opening another film within the next couple weeks.  As it turns out, it’s coming even sooner…we’ve got another film set to open on November 24 – the new thriller FAIR GAME – starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.   Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly wrote that this film “gets you riled up all over again at a deeply unpatriotic abuse of power.”  J.R. Jones of Chicago Reader wrote that the film is “easily the best fact-based Hollywood political thriller since ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN.”

Synopsis for LEBANON: “A handful of soldiers take a claustrophobic journey into the heart of war in this drama from Israeli writer and director Samuel Maoz.  It’s June 1982, and Israel is launching an invasion of Lebanon. Four men assigned to take part in the first strike are put on the same tank detail…After being given their orders, the men set out toward the Lebanese border, recognizing little of what goes on outside beyond what can be seen through a tiny window; they occasionally stop to help fellow Israelis hurt in battle, but for the most part, they roll relentlessly onward, occasionally arguing amongst themselves, until they arrive at their destination, a town already bombed into rubble by the Israeli Air Force.
