Prost! Germanfest Picnic in St. Anne’s Hill This Weekend

August 10, 2022 By Dayton937

Founded in 1983, Dayton’s Germanfest Picnic is a 3-day celebration of the Miami Valley’s rich German heritage. German food, plenty of fantastic German and domestic bier and wein, your favorite bands playing in the biergarten, the Polka Mass, Culture Display, Kinder Korner and food and craft vendors.

The heart of the festivities is the Dayton Liederkranz Turner Clubhouse at 1400 E. Fifth Street in historic St. Anne’s Hill, one of Dayton’s original German neighborhoods. The footprint of the festival stretches along East Fifth Street from Keowee to Dutoit Streets.

Plenty of free parking is available on Saturday and Sunday in the lots at Stivers High School and all weekend long at the SOITA lot at the corner of Keowee and Fifth Streets. Just follow the yellow signs.

Ashley’s Pastries -40 Years in Business: Recipe for Success

August 9, 2022 By Guest Contributor

40 Years in Business

Theresa and Greg Hammons

It really doesn’t seem possible that it’s been four decades since we opened the doors of our bakery shop on Park Avenue in Oakwood. Back then, when we got the keys and started to see things take shape, it was a dream finally come to life. Little did we know, the following 40 years would be the real dream: creating a thriving business in a community we love so dearly.

We are forever grateful for your continued support. Without you, none of this would be possible.

We took a little time away, as we always do every summer, to recharge and reconnect with our family. As some may know, a baker’s hours aren’t always the easiest, but we love what we do and we cherish being able to have a business that we love, and we are thankful to be able to take some time off each summer to spend uninterrupted time with those we love.

We’ve been asked before “What’s your secret?” “How do you do it?” There isn’t a magic ingredient, but we believe there are some common things that we believe are absolutely necessary in any recipe for success.

1. Loyalty. One of our favorite things about this business is our customers. Our customers come back year after year, celebration after celebration, holiday after holiday, choosing Ashley’s to help celebrate life deliciously. Customers here become family. We see them bring their kids in on a Saturday morning, often in pajamas, sometimes with messy bedheads, to pick out donuts. Those same families come back to Ashley’s again and again, and before we know it, we’re baking cakes for those same children as they reach life milestones like First Communion, graduation, and oftentimes, marriage. The loyalty of our customers has made this possible. The loyalty of our staff has made it possible, too. We are lucky to have employees that come to work here and stay here. They learn the routines and the recipes, and they stick with us through high times and low points. Our employees are dedicated, kind, loyal and they understand a key component of our bakery business – customer service. We want to make our customers happy – it’s what keeps them coming back – and this wouldn’t be possible without the loyalty of our employees, too.

2. Adaptability. A lot happens in 40 years. Trends come and go. The economy endures different cycles. Technology advances rapidly. And sometimes, pandemics hit. Being adaptable is crucial when you’re running a business, and you must be nimble as years pass. We’ve been able to adjust when necessary, especially during times like the COVID-19 pandemic. During unprecedented times, we knew we had to do things differently – we had to adjust. We started accepting Venmo and PayPal for seamless payments so folks could place orders over the phone, we offered curbside delivery so we could pass our pastries to customers with little contact, but still get them what they needed.

3. Relevant. Similar to being adaptable, we know how vital it is to stay relevant. In today’s fast, ultra-busy world, we know there is a lot of competition out there, not just competing for our time, but for our attention, our energy, our time. We know we have to stay relevant to stay open. We keep our customers’ needs at top of mind, so we are able to make adjustments to help meet their needs. Over the years, we’ve modified the offerings in our cases to meet the needs of customers. Today you’ll find a wide range of delicious sweet treats, breads, rolls, pastries – we have something for everyone – and we’ve added gluten free options to our menu to be more inclusive for customers with food sensitivities. We stay on top of bakery trends, especially in the wedding industry, so we can offer brides and grooms advice on what’s in, and to be able to offer what they need (A donut buffet instead of a classic cake? Absolutely! Towers of cupcakes instead of one towering cake? Sure!) By staying relevant to the needs of customers today, we’ve been able to serve customers for decades.

4. Community. It’s hard to build and maintain a business all by yourself. We are forever grateful for the Miami Valley community and their continued support of us. All of this wouldn’t be possible if we were going at it alone. We treasure the partnerships we have with local restaurants, businesses, schools and universities, and nonprofit organizations. We truly believe we are better together, and it’s an honor and a privilege for us to provide the pastries at annual fundraising events in town, or to know our rolls are served in the bread baskets at some of the finest restaurants in the Dayton area. We love being able to work with others in this great community, and we know how vital these relationships and partnerships are to our business.

5. Passion. Our passion for this business is one reason the doors at the bakery have remained open for 40 years. We absolutely love what we do. We love the basic mechanics of baking – following the recipes, kneading the dough, icing the cakes. We love the basics of business – networking with others in the community, brainstorming ideas, marketing and promoting our products. But what we love the most is you, our customers and friends who have become family to us over the years. You keep us coming back again and again. You inspire us to be creative in our baking. You make this enjoyable job even better. Our passion for Ashley’s Pastry Shop is really a passion for you.

Artisan Bread Returns to Emporium Wines & Underdog Cafe

August 9, 2022 By Dayton937

Emporium Wines & Underdog Cafe is historically known for the smell of warm baked goods, and fresh, homemade artisan bread. Due to the demand on production, the option for freshly baked bread diminished, and the only way to acquire it was on sandwiches, and the occasional release of whole loaves.
Beginning on Thursday, August 11, 2022, Emporium Wines & Underdog Cafe will begin selling fresh artisan bread exclusively on Thursdays on a first-come first-served basis. Each week, the bakery will determine the type of bread that will be featured, and will present it on Thursday mornings while supplies last.
To help further promote homemade cuisine, the cold-cut sandwiches will be discontinued, and Healthy Choice Lunch Wraps will be added to the menu to include: Spicy Vegan Hummus, Zesty Tuna Salad, Crispy Three Cheese, Flavored Chicken, and more. These fresh in-house recipes will provide a variety of healthy choice lunch options for both on-the-go, and dine-in.
There will also be new a la carte breakfast menu options added. Starting on Thursday, August 11th, guests will be able to order scrambled eggs, bacon or turkey sausage patties, and a biscuit individually or together as a complete breakfast meal. This addition provides even more options and flexibility when ordering.
They have also updated their brewed coffee refill policy to reflect appreciation for our guests who frequent the Cafe Living Room. After the purchase of a first cup of any sized brewed coffee, a refill will only be $1.50. (Applicable on 8oz. 12oz. 16oz, or equivalent.)
Friday Nights at Emporium Wines & Underdog Cafe will continue to be wine tasting night.
Learn more about the Natural Wine process, and the benefits of organic options. Then, stick around to jam to the evening’s guest band.

MCD’s Citizen Precipitation Observer of 51 Years Retiring At Age 96

August 2, 2022 By Dayton937

For 51 years, Dorothy Stebbins has measured precipitation (rain, snow, sleet & hail) 365 days a year for the Miami Conservancy District’s (MCD) Precipitation Observer Network. Dorothy is one of 42 citizen observers that has been a rock star for MCD. Dorothy has faithfully performed this work for the benefit of the region. The data that Dorothy and the other observers collect helps the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) with forecasting floods and assessing changes to weather patterns, including droughts.

MCD’s manager of water resource monitoring and data analysis, Mike Ekberg, and general manager, MaryLynn Lodor, visited Dorothy and her son Dan Stebbins today alongside the rain gage that she has used to record precipitation all these years. She was honored by Senator Matt Huffman, and Senator Stephan Huffman, with a proclamation for her outstanding public service. She was also gifted MCD’s “A Flood of Memories” coffee table book, and given a big thank you for her service. Dorothy recalled stories, passed down from her grandparents and parents, about surviving the 1913 flood and having to seek higher ground.

In 1998, the Dayton Daily News featured a story on Dorothy when she had served as an observer for more than 20 years. Dorothy framed the article and shared it with Mike and MaryLynn when they delivered MCD’s gifts of thanks today.

At 96 years old, MCD is honored to welcome Dorothy into retirement as she passes the observer responsibilities to her son. This maintains the family legacy, and will ensure that the data continues to benefit the region.

MCD’s vision is to have thriving communities, a healthy watershed and a higher quality of life, sustained by well-managed water resources throughout the watershed.  MCD’s mission is to protect lives, property and economic vitality within the Great Miami River Watershed through an integrated and balanced system that provides unfailing flood protection, preserves water resources, and promotes enjoyment of our waterways.

Coldwater Cafe remains one of the area’s BEST!

July 29, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

“I haven’t been there in a while….how was it?” since COVID, that question has been asked about everything from KINGS ISLAND to AX THROWING, THE SCHUSTER CENTER to RIVERSCAPE. One restaurant where the answer is a consistent ‘It was amazing’ is the Coldwater Cafe in Tipp City. 5 hungry men headed up 75 North on a hot day in July to see how the Cafe was doing! Hard to put into words the experience we had.

To start, imagine a 95 degree evening, sun beating on the sidewalks…you pull into to Tipp City, and like a miracle of God, the front space at Coldwater is wide open. That earns 1 star…more to come.

We were seated on time for our reservation, which has become a crapshoot for many restaurant goers. Star! From there, we were greeted by our waitress, Kelly, a longtime server for the Cafe, who got down to business immediately….martinis, wine, beer….she knew her crowd! Another Star! We ordered some appetizers, the charcuterie, which was literally a spot-on array of meat, cheese, sweets and savories. To complement, we added the mussels (one of the diners with us is a mussel snob and he gave them two thumbs way up!.) There wasn’t a morsel left from our first course. STAR!

***Out came the warm hand towels…I mean, who doesn’t love the warm hand towel!! (A Coldwater Staple!)  STAR!

As we chatted and enjoyed some wine and bread, Kelly kept us well entertained, joining our fun and adding her own take on things. When dinner arrived, seamlessly timed, 5 men were very happy. Lobster-Crab cakes were a hit! The NY Strip got rave reviews! The AHI tuna salad scored high and everyone talked, at length, about how their dinner was ‘the best!’ STAR!

Before we could ask for checks, Kelly recommended their homemade desserts….I mean, we were FULL! And then….’you must have the carrot cake’ (we did, delicious); ‘you must have the bread pudding’ (we did, home-run); and you must have the chocolate cake (we did….wowzer!). STARS!!

We sat, center of the dining room just talking about the experience! It was one of those nights when everything clicked…and that seems to be the energy of Coldwater Cafe! Solid. Scrumptious and Social. The ingredients are all there…you should be too!

STARS all around!

Smoothie Bar Opening in Wright-Dunbar

July 28, 2022 By Dayton937

Juicing Jammers Juice and Smoothie Bar, which started out in 2007, as Dayton’s first Black owned and woman owned mobile juicery. Owner Tawnni Miles is a registered Nurse who started her business in 2017 with a small refrigerator in Tae Winston’s  Entrepreneur Shop.  She then purchased her trailer in 2020. She’s been operating at events and farmer’s markets around town. Now she’ signed a multiple year lease with Wright Dunbar, Inc.  Tawnni shared that it’s surreal to now have this location, where she first now house her shop.

The Soft Opening is on Friday, July 29, 2022 10am to 3pm at 13 North Williams St. located in the Historic Wright Dunbar Business District.

The brick-and-mortar space will allow for an expanded menu to include yogurt bowls, acai bowls, lemonades, overnight oats, avocado toast, fruit bowls and salads.  Her smoothies run $8 for a 16 oz cup.

Miles shared she worked at McDonald’s growing up and the customer service training she received there taught her so much about dealing with customers.

Tawnni said, “As a registered nurse, I knew changing our diets was key to curing the ailments attacking health. So, what better way than to show up with the healthiest and most nutritious juices, lemonade, and yogurt bowls”.

As part of their opening they are asking customers to help name the smoothies, so you can sample the four smoothies and then submit their choice for names.  On Monday they will release the winning names.  Here’s a peak at the opening menu:

The Little Cooking School For Sale

July 25, 2022 By Dayton937

Chef Jo and her husband Stan drew their business plan out on a napkin in Ghost Light Coffee in 2014. That October, The Little City Cooking School opened its doors in Oakwood.
Today she posted this on her facebook page:
Over the years, thousands of you have come to cook and laugh with us. We could never have been as successful without you. Even after 4 and a half months of closed doors due to Covid, you all came back! Our hearts are filled with gratitude that our business survived since many small businesses did not.
As we grew, we were blessed with amazing staff. Our Chefs and Prep Chefs are the best and have been so crucial in giving you great evenings of cooking at TLCCS.
Stan and I will be retiring as of Jan 1 2023. I’ve entered my 70th year (how did that happen!) and it’s time for us to step down from this wonderful little gem of a business. Because it has been so successful and enjoyable, we wanted to let all of our dear customers know of this business opportunity. We would love to see TLCCS keep bringing the community excellent cooking experiences. We are hoping to sell our home and business together, but we see this business having great growth potential in the future in another location. Believe me, if I were younger, I’d take it there!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve given us in fulfilling a little plan from a napkin years ago.
Blessings,
Chef Jo

This $2.1 million dollar project will be the first food hall in Dayton.  The former 6685 Square foot conference center will have 5 local independent restaurants, coffee & bar with indoor and outdoor dining.  The project has been in the predevelopment stage since 2019 in collaboration with WDI and Wright-Dunbar Village Neighborhood Association.  “Dillin Corp. has been a great partner to work with from day one.  Larry Dillin understood the desire to bring quality food to West Dayton and support our local entrepreneurs”, said Jeff Jackson, Neighborhood President.

The Lumpia Queen and the Mayor

Construction began mid July 2021.  W. Social is located adjacent to the National Aviation Heritage Historical Park in the Historic Wright Dunbar Business District.  The goal of this project is to bring much needed food choices to West Dayton while supporting local entrepreneurs. W. Social will also support the growing residential neighborhood as well as the continued growth, investment, and redevelopment of the business district. “This project is perfectly aligned with the City’s asset-based development approach which focuses on development that builds community capacity and leverages private investment,” said Veronica Morris, Senior Economic Development Supervisor for the City of Dayton.

Funded through private investment, equity, and City of Dayton West Dayton Development Trust Fund.  Local lending partner Wright-Patt Credit Union.

The Wright Dunbar Food Hall  opened for business on Monday, July 25th at 7am for coffee from Grindhouse Coffee and breakfast from Soca Carribean.  The remaining restaurants and bar will open at 11am after a ribbon cutting with the Mayor, City Officials and the developers/owners of W. Social.

Illy’s Fire Pizza, The Lumpia Queen, Taco Street and De’Lish will serve up food to the public from 11a-9p daily, with later hours on the weekends. Grindhouse and Soca will be open from 7a-10a for breakfast with Grindhouse winding down at 4p. The bar will be open from 11-9p daily with later hours on the weekend. Sunday is beer and wine sales only.
“We are ready for today!”, said Rob Barry, General Manager of W. Social. “Everyone has worked hard on their menus and the staff is ready to meet their regulars!”
W. Social will hold a Grand Opening block party on Friday, August 5th featuring live music from Distant Cousinz with opener Top Secret along with dessert food trucks on the street and other exciting surprises. The event, managed by Dillin Events Team, is free to the public and attendees are encouraged to bring a chair. Williams street will be closed for the festivities, but online ordering from the restaurants inside W. Social will be available to everyone.
“It is beyond awesome to experience W. Social in all its glory”, said Jeff Jackson, local neighborhood HOA President and Wright Dunbar Inc board member. “It’s great to have this vibe right here in the Wright Dunbar neighborhood!”
