woman_in_gold_ver3_xlgHello Everyone,

In addition, on Friday, we will open a film many of you have been anxious to see – WOMAN IN GOLD. For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for WOMAN IN GOLD: “Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Lady in Gold.’ Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

LUNAFEST’s main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund, is dedicated to eliminating the environmental causes of breast cancer. Through education, policy initiatives and other innovative campaigns, the Breast Cancer Fund mobilizes the public to help stop this devastating epidemic affecting 1 in 8 women.” In addition to the traveling line-up, this special screening will include the short film ESTRAGON’S BOOT by local filmmaker Rani Deighe Crowe. LUNAFEST will be held on Sunday, April 12 at 3:00. Tickets (now available at THE NEON) are $5 for students with valid IDs and $10 for general admission. Dayton’s Lunafest is sponsored by The Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance – a feminist organization whose members work to promote and protect the rights of women of all classes, races and cultures. Money raised from this screening will additionally benefit Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio. Click this LINK to find out more about this year’s films.

“On Sunday, April 19 at 3:00, join The Dayton International Peace Museum at THE NEON for an upbeat rally to inspire, inform and prepare Team Captains for their essential role in the upcoming May 2 Peace Heroes Walk at RiverScape MetroPark. Montgomery County Food Policy Coalition is brining a special screening of GROWING CITIES to town. “Growing Cities is a film about urban farming in America. At a time when so much negative attention is paid to the food system – from mad cows to factory farms – this film tells the inspiring stories of city-dwellers who are transforming their communities one vacant lot, backyard beehive, and rooftop farm at a time. Join the filmmakers on a cross-county road trip, along the way these growers show that the urban farming movement is about a whole lot more than simply food and that everyone can take part in creating a healthier, more just, and sustainable food system.” This film will screen on Saturday, May 2 at 3:00. Tickets are free, but reservations must be made by call or emailing Emily Bradford at (937)225-6470 or [email protected]

In the next couple weeks, we plan to really keep moving with our traditional engagements. On April 17, we will open TRUE STORY – starring Jonah Hill and James Franco. On April 24, we will open one of my favorite comedies of the past few years – WHILE WE’RE YOUNG.

See you soon,
Jonathan

Land of Illusion Going Hollywood!

March 27, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

11082552_729262630506000_1360333699636407596_n

CEO Brett Oakley and Director, Andy Palmer

Today a brand new  extension of the long established “Land of Illusion” haunted amusement attraction site in Middletown, Ohio was introduced-  “Land of Illusion Studio and Backlot.” Located off of St. Rt. 4, the 110 acre grounds on Thomas Road  are a comprehensive film lot. Local entrepreneurs, Mark Ott (General Manager ) and Brett Oakley (owner), saw the need for their facility to boost the regional film industry.

The grounds feature  permanently themed sets that include city scape’s, wooded areas, a school, mine shaft, full service bars (with full alcohol permit), an amphitheater and more. Sure to attract many out of region productions, they offer fully equipped construction and scene shop work space, green screens, space for a production office, gift shop, restaurant and full service housing to accommodate a crew of 21. Set equipment such as generators and portable lighting are  also available. Crew and personnel listings are extensive as well, offering on-site medics, carpenters, fabricators, make-up artists, production assistants, gated security  and a payroll administrator. It is site to behold as the tour seems never ending. (Thankfully they have golf carts.)

Though the site has been functional for a few years, hosting  productions of the “reality” genre, the first LA based production helped to roll out the official debut as a full service studio and backlot. On March 25th., principal photography began for comedy / horror film “The Funhouse Massacre.”  LA Director Andy Palmer and crew are settling in nicely and adjusting to the ever changing Ohio elements. The budget has not been disclosed at this point but when asked, Palmer confirmed it is “over $1 million, under $4 million.” Working under a tight production deadline, principle

Freddy Kruger, played by Robert Englund

photography will end April 19 with a projected release date of Halloween season, 2015.

Actor Robert Englund, best known for his role as Freddie Kruger in “Nightmare On Elm Street” is part of the principal cast of “The Funhouse Massacre” and is due to arrive on set within the next few weeks. Also cast is character actor Clint Howard, known for his offbeat roles but probably best known as the brother of Ron Howard. He is due to arrive within the first half of production.

“The Funhouse Massacre” production is the perfect scenario for what the regional film industry is focusing on. Economic development and job creation are on the forefront of the minds of “Land Of Illusion” owners and managers. Employing a year round staff, the bulk of business is generated by paintball outings and during the Fall for Halloween attractions. With the studio and backlot, the staff increases for production services. The need for regional production services was brought to manager Mark Ott by Dayton based producer Karri O’Reilly. “The Funhouse Massacre” is stimulating the regional economy by employing a local management agency, crew members, equipment rental, leasing 40 hotel rooms in Middletown and Dayton, hiring of local catering services, rental cars, gasoline and local restaurant outings. Producers for the film continue to filter in from LA and are have commented on the ease of travel and navigation of the Greater Dayton region. The advantages of our “90 minute” market is an added bonus to the attractive Ohio tax incentive for films of a larger budget.

UPDATE – MOMMY and IT FOLLOWS Are Opening at THE NEON!

March 24, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

mommy_ver2Hello Everyone,

Earlier today, I made an announcement about WOMAN IN GOLD opening at THE NEON on April 1…that plan has changed.  The Weinstein Company has made big changes to their release strategy for WOMAN IN GOLD.  After confirming April 1 as its opening date for us, they have yanked it away (from us and numerous other cinemas across the country).  At this time, we don’t know if we will be able to play the film when it finally becomes available in our market.  That said, I have made the appropriate changes to this week’s newsletter below.  Thanks for your understanding – this is very frustrating news (not to mention a terrible waste of time, energy and our valuable on-screen marketing).

We are officially overbooked at THE NEON, and we need to get moving with some titles.  Though LEVIATHAN is one of the best reviewed films we’ve played in a long time (and audiences were in awe this weekend), it didn’t perform well for us…so Thursday will be your last chance to catch it at THE NEON.  On Friday, we will open 2 new films.  Xavier Dolan’s MOMMY will screen once a day starting Friday, and IT FOLLOWS will get a full run (we haven’t played a horror film in a long, long time – this one is getting great reviews).  All that said, we’ll keep bothSECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS for another week.  For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for MOMMY: From Wunderkind Xavier Dolan comes this year’s Oscar submission from Canada – MOMMY. Dolan has won numerous awards at Cannes and around the world for his 5 feature-length films, and he just turned 26. “A feisty widowed single mom finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her rambunctious 15-year-old ADHD son. As they try to make ends meet, Kyla, the peculiar girl across the street, offers her help. Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.” (taken from Roadside Attractions) This is a strictly limited engagement with just a handful of screenings, and we’re one of a few cinemas in Ohio to play it. Don’t miss it! Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for IT FOLLOWS: It’s been a long time since THE NEON has screened a horror film, and fans on Facebook seem enthusiastic for the engagement of this critically acclaimed film…let’s see if that excitement really translates to solid box office numbers. “For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.” (taken from RADiUS/Weinstein Co.) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Don’t forget that tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25, The Alumni Chair in Humanities at UD will present special screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s classic film PATHS OF GLORY – starring Kirk Douglas. Dr. Tony Smith will introduce the award-winning film, and the screenings are free for UD faculty, staff and students. Tickets for the general public are available for a suggested donation of $5. Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. The movie will screen at 7:30 and 9:30. The presentation of this film is part of the World War I cohort project at UD.

LUNAFEST is Back! On Sunday, April 12 at 3:00, The Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance will present the popular touring festival of short films by, for about women! “Established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST connects women, their stories and their causes through film. This traveling film festival spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny and thought-provoking themes. Equally important, LUNAFEST can be used as a ‘fundraiser-in-a-box.’ helping hosts raise money for nonprofits in their own communities, as well as the Breast Cancer Fund. 100 percent of all net proceeds are donated to charity. LUNAFEST’s main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund…Tickets are $5 for students with valid IDs and $10 for general admission. Lunafest is sponsored by The Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance – a feminist organization whose members work to promote and protect the rights of women of all classes, races and cultures. We seek to foster education and activism, and we work with community organizations challenging sexism, racism, homophobia, ageism, classism, poverty and other manifestations of injustice.” (taken from DWRA press notes) Click this LINK to read more about the films.

The Dayton Jewish International Film Festival is preparing another incredible slate of films for you. Screenings will kick off later in April, and the official website will be available soon, but if you want to take a peek at some of the titles, visit The Jewish Community Center’s Event Page by clicking this LINK.

Every year when I come back from The Toronto International Film Festival, people ask me how hard it is to get tickets and participate. While anyone can go to TIFF (you don’t have to be an industry insider), so many people don’t realize that there’s a huge, incredible, well-respected film festival just a few hours away. The Cleveland International Film Festival has grown and grown over the years, and I’ll be attending the final 5 days of the festival – staring tomorrow. Check out the official website to see just how impressive it really is.

I hope you’ll help keep THE NEON nice and busy in my absence, and I hope to see you soon when I get back.

Thanks for your continued support.
Jonathan

Take a Magical Trip to Neverland With Dayton Ballet and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra

March 20, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Peter_Pan_Ballet_PhilharmonicOn Friday, March 20 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. in the Mead Theater of the Schuster Center, Dayton Ballet, in collaboration with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will present Peter Pan, the fourth and final ballet of the 2014-2015 New Horizons Season. This unique presentation with live orchestra is also the fifth performance in the Kettering Health Network SuperPops Series.  The Signature Sponsor for this production is The Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts, and the Performance Sponsor is Premier Health.  Supporting Sponsors are Enterprise Roofing and Quantech Services, Inc.  The DPAA Innovation Partner is the DP&L Foundation – Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

Dayton Ballet’s Peter Pan will feature original choreography by Septime Webre, Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, under the guidance of Dayton Ballet Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke. For this production of Peter Pan, Dayton Ballet joins forces with Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra to present the enchanting score by Carmon DeLeone.  Johanna Bernstein Wilt will be setting this ballet, having previously helped set it in several productions with ballet companies around the country. Dayton Ballet’s Sharon Neumeister will be the Rehearsal Assistant on this production.

The timeless story of Peter Pan extols the virtues of eternal youth, of keeping our childlike wonder, and of not taking the real world too seriously. The story of Peter Pan was written by J.M. Barrie over 100 years ago and has been retold over the years in various formats, from books to movies, from cartoons to musical theatre.  Just this past December the story was retold by NBC as a special live television production of the 1954 musical adaptation of Peter Pan.

Although the story itself has been around for over a century, the ballet version of this classic tale is relatively new.  In 2000, renowned choreographer Septime Webre was commissioned to create a new ballet version of Peter Pan.  Webre set out to design the ballet with two goals in mind. “One was to create a very ‘dancy’ production that would really challenge the dancers and their technique, and the other to connect to audiences of all ages,” said Webre. (www.pghcitypaper.com)

Septime Webre has indeed accomplished these goals in his story ballet version of Peter Pan.  The ballet includes many notable moments set to thrill audience members of any age.  The flying scenes for Peter, Wendy, John and Michael are magical and breath-taking.  There are spectacular solos for Peter and Wendy that are completely captivating, a high-energy opening dance for the Lost Boys, boisterous and bawdy scenes for the Pirates and Wenches, complete with real sword fighting, and a fantastic solo dance by the Crocodile.  This ballet is fun-filled and clever, rich with humor and including witty nods to classic ballets the audience will surely recognize.

“Peter Pan is a highly demanding story ballet that insists on larger-than-life character portrayals,” says Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke.  “The ballet is extremely well-crafted by Septime.  While the dancing is strenuous and intense, the ballet is hysterical and so much fun to perform!”

“Carmon DeLeone’s score for Peter Pan is brilliant, colorful, tuneful music,” adds DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman.  “You’ll hear a little Prokofiev, a little Bach, a little John Williams, and a lot of wonderful original music, too. There are a lot of notes, but it will also be a lot of fun to play!”

The lively and dynamic dancing from all 19 dancers of Dayton Ballet and from dancers of Dayton Ballet II senior and junior companies, combined with the enchanting score played to perfection by Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will make for a wonderful night of entertainment in the Schuster Center.

Tickets for Peter Pan range from $23 to $78 and are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at www.daytonperformingarts.org.  Senior, teacher, student, and military discounts are available at the box office. For more information on this production or on other upcoming performances by Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Opera and Dayton Ballet, visit www.daytonperformingarts.org.

Young Performers Stage an Adventure at The Human Race’s Summer Theatre Camp

March 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

SSK-Midas-photo-1The Human Race Theatre Company has opened registration for its June 2015 Summer Stock KIDS summer theatre camp for children ages 8 – 13.

A two-week program lead by Jene Rebbin Shaw, the Summer Stock KIDS camp teaches children how to develop many aspects of a play, including sets, costumes and props, all with the help of K12 Gallery for Young People. Campers rehearse daily, preparing for a performance in front of family and friends. This summer, the children will be performing The Adventures of Rose Red (SnowWhite’s Less-Famous Sister) by Sean Abley.

Camp dates are Mondays through Fridays, June 8 – 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Performances of The Adventures of Rose Red are Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Daily classes and performances are held at The Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center at 116 North Jefferson Street in downtown Dayton. The Early Bird fee for Summer Stock KIDS is $395.00 per student if paid by May 15, and $425.00 after May 15.

Rose-Red-title-artAbout The Adventures of Rose Red (Snow White’s Less-Famous Sister)
Cinderella, Jack, Snow White, Prince Charming and Goldilocks all go into the woods to see their happy endings. But what happens next? How does fame and fortune get in the way of simple happiness? Many of your favorite characters find their stories tangled together as they try to find ways to celebrate their fame, but strive to live a “normal life.” Speaking of fame, what about Rose Red, Snow White’s less-famous sister? Rose has just turned 13 and is wondering what kind of life she will lead in the shadow of her well-known sister. This modern day fairy tale—complete with trendy teenage dialogue and I-Mirrors instead of I-Phones (And, oh! The spiders and frogs!)—explores the true meaning of “happily ever after.”

Registration and Scholarship Information

Registrations for Summer Stock KIDS are being accepted now. There are a limited number of partial scholarships available for qualifying families in need, made possible by the Frank M. Tait Foundation. Registration and more information can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website at www.humanracetheatre.org/summerstock.php or by contacting Education Director Marilyn Klaben at 937-461-3823 ext. 3132 or [email protected].

Golden Globe Winner LEVIATHAN Opens March 20th at THE NEON!

March 17, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

leviathan_poster1Hello Everyone,

Even though WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS and THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL are performing well enough to stick around, we’re still going to throw something new into the mix for a handful of screenings. LEVIATHAN is one of the best reviewed films we’ve shown in a long time, and it was the winner of this year’s Golden Globe for “Best Foreign Language Film.” For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for LEVIATHAN: “Kolia lives in a small town near the Barents Sea in North Russia. He has his own auto-repair shop. His shop stands right next to the house where he lives with his young wife Lilya and his son from a previous marriage. Vadim Shelevyat, the Mayor of the town, wants to take away Kolia’s business, his house and his land. First he tries buying off Kolia, but Kolia cannot stand losing everything he has, not only the land, but also all the beauty that has surrounded him from the day of his birth. So Vadim Shelevyat starts being more aggressive.” (taken from Sony Classics) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Last weekend’s special screening of TWO HEARTS AS ONE was a huge, sold-out success – puncuated with a big round of applause. Because of the demand for tickets, The Turkish American Society of Dayton has added another screening this Sunday at 3:00. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased now at our box office. “This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. …Presented in Turkish, with English subtitles.” (Taken from press notes) Check out the trailer below. The film is lovely!

Don’t forget that THE REEL PADDING FILM FESTIVAL is just a couple days away – this Thursday at 7:30. Click the official link or visit our box office to get your advanced tickets. (And I just got the inside scoop. Attendees over 21 will be treated to a free beer!)

On Wednesday, March 25, The Alumni Chair in Humanities at UD will present special screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s classic film PATHS OF GLORY – starring Kirk Douglas.

Every year when I come back from The Toronto International Film Festival, people ask me how hard it is to get tickets and participate. While anyone can go to TIFF, so many people don’t realize that there’s an incredible, well-respected film festival just a few hours away. The Cleveland International Film Festival has grown and grown over the years, and I’ll be attending the final 5 days of the festival next week. That said, the festival starts tomorrow evening. Check out the official website to see just how impressive it really is.

Thanks for your continued support.
See you soon,

Jonathan

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS – From FLIGHT OF CONCHORDS Creators – Opens Friday!

March 10, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

What-We-Do-in-the-Shadows-1Hello Everyone,

If you still need to see MR. TURNER or STILL ALICE, you’ll need to hurry. Thursday will be the last chance to catch them at THE NEON. (For this week’s showtimes, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.) Of course we’ll certainly be holding onto THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL! Many thanks to all of you who came out to support this film during opening weekend. We had the best results in town, and we couldn’t do it without such a great, loyal following. Thank you!

On Friday, we will open a new comedy that’s in the same “vein” as SPINAL TAP and BEST IN SHOW. It’s an award-winning vampire mockumentary called WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, and critics and audiences alike have been loving it.

Synopsis for WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS: “WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that’s not always hospitable to the undead. Clement and Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series “Flight of the Conchords,” co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that’s filming them, the details of their daily-make that nightly-routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, and in appearance from adorably youthful to Nosferatu-crusty, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, cruise clubs for lovely ladies, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet.” (taken from Paladin) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

“This Sunday at 3:00, The Turkish American Society is proud to present a special, one-time screening of director Hasan Kiraç’s TWO HEARTS AS ONE (Birlesen Gönüller). This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. Newlyweds Niyaz and Cennet are forced to separate when war rears a violent and chaotic head. Niyaz is taken to Red Army to fight on the Soviet side, while Cennet is sent to a camp when the Nazis took over their village…Woven into the narrative is the story of Yunus and Dilek, a loving couple from Turkey who leave for Almaty, then the capital of Kazakhstan, in the 1990’s. Ambitious Yunus is planning to build a school, but he has no resources at all. His wife Dilek sympathizes and supports him, but their enduring poverty wears her patience and resolve – until a chance encounter provides some much-needed perspective. Tickets for this special event are $10 and are now available at THE NEON’s box office. Presented in Turkish, with English subtitles.” (Taken from press notes) Check out the trailer. It looks lovely! Tickets are going quickly!

Rapid Media’s 10th annual Reel Paddling Film Festival showcases the world’s best paddling films to audiences in Canada, United States and around the world. The festival inspires more people to explore rivers, lakes and oceans, push physical and emotional extremes, embrace the lifestyle and appreciate the heritage of the wild places we paddle. Review Roundup – Friendships & Feuds

March 8, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

In the mood for sketch comedy, musical theater or classic drama? Here’s a rundown of a few offerings currently on local stages.

parallel lives

Gina Handy and Andrea Morales in “Parallel Lives” (Contributed photo)

PARALLEL LIVES

Magnolia Theatre Company, a professional theater troupe, joins Dayton’s budding arts scene with a terrific production of Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy’s two-hander sketch comedy “Parallel Lives” inside the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center.

The brainchild of founding artistic director Gina Handy, Magnolia Theatre Company, established in Pennsylvania in 2012, is dedicated to producing fresh, funky and feminine plays incorporating female actors, technicians and administrative staff. “Parallel Lives,” a smart, thought-provoking account of modern life told from the female perspective notably filmed by HBO in 1991, is the epitome of the organization’s creed because it embraces the wonders of womanhood with tremendous feminist spunk. At the same rate, the play examines love, truth, communication, friendship, performance art, sisterly strife, and more with an impactful, gleeful purpose that doesn’t ostracize the male audience.
Gaffney and Najimy’s 11 flavorful skits, a playground of possibilities deftly staged by Marya Spring Cordes particularly encompassing ruminations on “West Side Story” and a comical support group for Disney moms, are superbly inhabited by Handy and Andréa Moralés in their local acting debuts. Portraying multiple characters, male and female, this colorfully energetic duo impresses with transformative finesse. Handy is very touching as an elderly aunt discovering her nephew is gay, but she is also a genuine laugh riot as Southern cornball Hank, who only has a few pick-up lines to his credit which he doesn’t mind incessantly repeating at his favorite bar. The dazzling Moralés, displaying great physicality, utilizes her chameleon strengths in the funny, tender “Three Sisters,” and marvelously interprets the mundane morning grind in the exceptionally expressive “Silent Torture” set to the brisk music of Georges Bizet.

Presented under the auspices of the Victoria Theatre Association’s formerly dormant ImPACt program, Magnolia Theatre Company isn’t planning to produce another show until next season. Even so, I eagerly anticipate its return.

“Parallel Lives” concludes March 8 at 2 p.m. in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. The play is performed in 100 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $20. Call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com. The production will also be performed March 26 and 27 at the Garden Theatre of Short North Stage in Columbus. For more information about Magnolia, visit www.magnoliatheatrecompany.com

spelling bee

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Playhouse South delivers a thoroughly charming and entertaining presentation of composer William Finn, librettist Rachel Sheinkin and conceiver Rebecca Feldman’s 2005 musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
Casting is paramount to the success of this witty and tender show, which contains some of Finn’s most vibrant, beautiful melodies. Director Carrie Thurston assembles a winning cast who pours equal amounts of zaniness and warmth into engaging, relatable characters that are more than mere kooky caricatures. In particular, the six actors who must be believable as smart-mouthed, fiercely competitive, highly peculiar, and emotionally scarred kids absolutely hit the mark.

Brett Norgaard (Chip Tolentino/Jesus Christ), Meagan Kuchan (Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere), Jose Gutierrez del Arroyo (Leaf Coneybear/Carl Dad), Bobby Escamillia (William Barfee), Caitie Erker (Marcy Park), and Megan Weyrauch (Olive Ostrovsky) are a delightfully humorous bunch. Bolstered by Annette Looper’s energetic choreography and smoothly handling crucial audience participation (audience volunteers join the actors onstage), they cohesively work together to make the comedy sparkle, an important attribute that keeps the focus from tilting toward one character or characters. Still, it’s imperative to point out how distinctive they are as individuals as evidenced in Norgaard’s comical agony, Kuchan’s unyielding perseverance, Gutierrez del Arroyo’s outstanding intertwining of hilarity and heartbreak, Escamillia’s oddball agitation, Erker’s disgust, and Weyrauch’s endearing sensitivity. Also, Kristen Danley (as bee coordinator Rona Lisa Perretti/Olive’s Mom), Steve Voris (Vice Principal Douglas Panch) and Michael Shannon (comfort counselor Mitch Mahoney/Dan Dad/Olive’s Dad) provide solid support. The lovely Danley and vocally strong Shannon join Weyrauch for a stirring rendition of the gorgeous “I Love You Song,” a fantastic, dreamlike sequence centered on Olive and her parents which fittingly reminds how vital the presence of a supportive parent is to a child’s well-being.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” continues through March 15 at Playhouse South located in the Clark Haines Theatre (Kettering Board of Education Building) 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 50 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11for seniors and military and $8 for students. Call 1-888-262-3792 or visit www.playhousesouth.org

desire

The cast of “Desire Under the Elms” (Contributed photo)

DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS

The Dayton Theatre Guild’s valiant attempt at Eugene O’Neill’s 1924 drama “Desire Under the Elms” feels stiff, awkwardly paced and conceptually askew.

Directed by Craig Smith, the dysfunctional, soap opera-esque “Elms” moves to a frustrating rhythm as engrossing themes of betrayal, greed, jealousy, lust, pride, and vengeance intermingle unevenly in three acts. A constant flow of sturdy moments followed by weaker moments hinders the allure of this forgotten tragedy about a rural New England family dismantled by the new bride of its patriarch.

Smith significantly acquires three convincing leading players, but I wonder if the production, in dire need of scene transition music to sustain momentum, would have benefitted from a completely different artistic approach. Instead of a literal mounting that adheres to the material’s melodrama and extraneous ensemble, perhaps a darker, minimalist, scaled down take would have given the action a more compelling immediacy or contemporary sting. Also, the pretty exterior of the Cabot family farmhouse (the largest set built at the Guild’s new space courtesy of designer Fred Blumenthal) could have been replaced by projections. The farmhouse satisfies visually but forces Smith into producing cumbersome blocking, especially for audiences unfamiliar with the play’s intricacies.

Nonetheless, Dave Nickel (as hardnosed patriarch Ephraim), Alexander Chilton (as Ephraim’s conflicted, haunted and distraught son Eben), and Danielle Dawler (as Ephraim’s treacherous young wife Abbie) give completely committed portrayals. Nickel, furious and harsh, excellently interprets Ephraim’s monologue reflecting on the history of the farm, a former “field of stones.” He also gives credence to Ephraim’s laughably clueless inability to recognize Abbie and Eben are infatuated with each other. Chilton, delivering a remarkable breakdown in Act 2, and Dawler, fiercely manipulative and an effective emotional wreck in Act 3, are compatible lovers although I prefer “Elms” served passionately unbuttoned. Oddly, skin is not in, which seems disingenuous considering the first word in the title. The cast includes Mark Anderson (Simeon), Adam Clevenger (Peter), William Styles (Sheriff/Old Farmer), Rick Flynn (Fiddler father), Alex Bindemann (Fiddler), Breanna Caron (Young Girl), Harry Shepard (Man), and Sarah Saunders (Woman).

“Desire Under the Elms” continues through March 15 at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. The production lasts two hours and includes two intermissions. Patrons are advised the play contains mature themes. Tickets are $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for students. Call (937) 278-5993 or visit www.daytontheatreguild.org

MR. TURNER Opens and Fun MARIGOLD HOTEL News at THE NEON!

February 26, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

mr-turner-19Hello Everyone,

I’m sad to report that TIMBUKTU did not fare very well for us at THE NEON. Though it was an award winner at Cannes and it nearly swept the Cesar Awards last week (the “French Oscars” – it won 7 awards including “Best Picture”), today (Feb. 25) will be your last chance to catch it at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open a film that many art enthusiasts have been anxious to see – MR. TURNER. We’ll also hold onto the film that just garnered Julianne Moore her first Oscar – STILL ALICE. Remaining showtimes for this week are available on our website – www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for MR. TURNER: Given 100% reviews by The Wall Street Journal, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and many more! “This film explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.” (taken from Metacritic.com) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton will sponsor a special screening of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE this Saturday at noon. DEAR WHITE PEOPLE is a 2014 American satirical film written and directed by Justin Simien. The film focuses on African American students who attend a predominately white university. This is the fourth annual movie sponsored by the Junior Leaguers of Dayton as a fundraiser for scholarships. The film will be followed by a community discussion led by Jeannette Taylor, program coordinator for NCCJ. The cost is $30 per ticket which includes the cost of movie, soda, a glass of wine, popcorn and the discussion.” (Taken from event press notes.) Tickets can now be purchased at THE NEON’s box office.

The ReelAbilities Film Festival is happening at numerous venues around Cincinnati, but one special screening is coming to Dayton on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 – ON BEAUTY. “Rick Guidotti, who after 15 years of working for clients such as Yves Saint Laurent, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar, grew tired of seeing the same ideal of beauty ‘spit up at us constantly.’ In a moment of serendipity, Rick walked by a young woman with Albinism at a New York City bus stop, and wondered why she wasn’t considered beautiful in his other world. This exploration resulted in a show-stopping magazine spread for Life Magazine called ‘Redefining Beauty.’ The Cincinnati ReelAbilities Film Festival, organized by LADD and presented by Macy’s, is our region’s largest film festival celebrating the stories, lives and art of people who experience disability; all of the film screenings benefit local nonprofit organizations.” For more information or to order advanced tickets, click this LINK to the official site.

On Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 (Please Note – the date/time in a previous newsletter was incorrect!), Taller Trees Productions will premiere THE FALL LEAGUE – a locally produced documentary about seniors, softball and life. “This heart-warming documentary captures the story of a Dayton senior league (all players are over age 63), but it goes much further, exploring the impact of the sport in regard to family relationships, the bonding and camaraderie between players, and topics of aging that are necessary considerations for active seniors…the movie has been accepted for the Indy Sports Film Fest Experience in Toronto…and Louisvilles’ International Festival of Film.” (taken from press notes) To read more about the film and its production and to view the trailer, visit the film’s official site by clicking this LINK. Tickets, just $7 each, are now available at THE NEON’s box office. Many people involved with the production of the film will attend the screening.

“On Sunday, March 15 at 3:00, The Turkish American Society is proud to present a special, one-time screening of director Hasan Kiraç’s TWO HEARTS AS ONE (Birlesen Gönüller). This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. Julie Taymor’s six-time Tony Award-winning, artistically astonishing adaptation of Disney’s “The Lion King” returns to Dayton next summer as the highly anticipated centerpiece of the Victoria Theatre Association’s 2015-2016 Premier Health Broadway Series.

Announced Feb. 24 at an elegant ceremony attended by more than 500 guests inside the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center, “The Lion King” serves as the climax of a six-show season containing some of the strongest productions assembled by the Victoria in recent years. Having seen all of them I assure you there is immense appeal within each totally guaranteed to satisfy multiple tastes and demographics.

The lineup includes the exhilarating 2013 Tony-winning, circus-themed revival of Stephen Schwartz’s “Pippin,” 2014’s breezy and nostalgic Woody Allen adaptation of “Bullets Over Broadway,” the intimate 2012 Tony-winning adaptation of “Once,” the gorgeous 2013 Tony-winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” and composer Jason Robert Brown’s beautifully romantic, Tony-winning adaptation of “The Bridges of Madison County.”

“The Victoria Theatre Association is in the quality of life business,” stated Victoria Theatre Association and Arts Center Foundation CEO & President Ken Neufeld, who served as emcee. “I am really excited about the new shows on this year’s Premier Health Broadway Series. Each Tony Award-winning production will give our audiences a unique and rich theatrical experience.”
The 45-minute ceremony was particularly heightened by a selection from each show wonderfully rendered by Wright State University musical theater students Sean Jones, Lauren Schorr, Keaton Eckhoff, and Emma Jordan with professor Jamie Cordes and accompanist Amy Gray. Various business and community leaders such as Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley and Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge notably assisted Neufeld with the announcements.

THREE LITTLE BIRDSThree-Little-Birds-150-150x150
By Cedella Marley & Gerald Hausman
Music & Lyrics by Bob Marley
Jan. 30, 2016 – Victoria Theatre

A show for kids with songs by music icon Bob Marley? Sure! Bob Marley’s songs are known the world over for their powerful message of love, peace, and harmony. Now a whole new generation can discover his most joyous songs. Adapted by Michael J. Bobbitt from a children’s book by Cedella Marley (Bob’s daughter) and directed by Nick Olcott, THREE LITTLE BIRDS tells a tale of triumph over anxiety – quite a common problem among children today! Ziggy is so terrified of hurricanes, mongooses and other things in his native Jamaica that he is afraid to leave the house. Adding to his apprehension is the lurking presence of a bogeyman named Duppy, who sneaks up on people and steals their hair (now that is frightening!). This fresh musical production is drenched in upbeat tunes, bright colors and Caribbean flavor!

“With a jammin’ score… and buoyant design to match, the show flaunts such jubilant, tropical candy tones that the outside world looks drab in comparison.” – The Washington Post

“Bob Marley’s music and songs are performed in a way that is lively and fun, with the universal message of love, joy and celebration.” – DCMetro Theatre Art

TIM AND THE SPACE CADETS
Feb. 20, 2016 ─ Victoria Theatre
Brooklyn-based TIM AND THE SPACE CADETS play songs about the important things in life: pizza parties, snow days, and summer vacations. Songwriters Tim Kubart and Matt Puckett weave their own childhood memories through textured pop tunes, rockers, and lullabies, including their XMKiDS chart-topping single “Superhero.” Their new album, Anthems for Adventure, aims to inspire everyone to turn off their TVs and computers, and get outside and play. It celebrates adventures as grand as riding a cardboard rocketship to space and as small as giving up an old pair of sneakers for new ones. The band takes on familiar and iconic childhood experiences with indie flair, distorted guitars, and lyrics that bridge the gap between innocence and wisdom in a way for listeners of all ages to appreciate and understand, bravely exploring the full spectrum of childhood emotion. TIM AND THE SPACE CADETS are veterans of renowned festivals like Lollapalooza’s Kidzapalooza, and venues like Symphony Space, The Smithsonian Museum, and New York City’s South Street Seaport. Tim’s energy is infectious, and a Space Cadets set is engaging and interactive – a true indie rock experience for families and fans, full of strong musicianship, and a tap dancing sidekick.

“I like to say TIM AND THE SPACE CADETS isn’t music for kids, it’s music about being a kid, so kids can relate and everyone else can relive those memories.” – Tim

ELEPHANT AND PIGGIE’S WE ARE IN A PLAY!
From the Kennedy Center Theatre for Young Audiences

And in WE ARE IN A PLAY! a brand-new vaudevillian romp of a musical, Elephant Gerald and Piggie sing and dance their way through plenty of pachydermal peril and swiney suspense – facing fundamental questions like: What do you wear to a fancy pool costume party? Should you share your ice cream? How can two friends play with one toy? Backed by nutty back-up singers The Squirrelles, our duo even gets the audience involved in the action. So get ready for a musical experience ripped from the pages of your favorite books. You’ll be doing the “Flippy Floppy Floory” dance all night long!

Ethan Hawke’s Shout Out to Dayton

February 23, 2015 By Guest Contributor

Nicolas-Genin-photo-of-Ethan-Hawke

Photo by Nicolas Genin (used with permission)

Like many in Dayton, Ohio I was extremely pleased when actor/director Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) mentioned filmmaking in my hometown at this year’s Oscars. But it really should not be that astonishing since Dayton is so closely associated with performing arts.  Theater certainly is well represented with the Schuster Performing Arts Center, Dayton Performing Arts, the Loft Theatre, the Victoria Theatre Association and The Human Race Theatre Company (just to name a few).

Dayton also has a history of famous actors within the community: from the voice of Bart Simpson (Nancy Cartwright) to Apocalypse Now’s Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) to President Kennedy (Rob Lowe in Killing Kennedy – it is interesting that both Sheen and Lowe have played President Kennedy in their acting careers, and that Sheen has played both John and Robert Kennedy.)  At the inception of the silver screen Dayton was there in the form of silent film star Dorothy Gish.  Dayton residents Katt Williams and the late Jonathan Winters have caused the world to laugh through their creative comedy antics.  And of course there were, and are, many more from the Miami Valley who made or make Hollywood their home.

Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is also the home of budding filmmakers. Wright State University has a well-recognized film school and FilmDayton is a growing community of filmmakers who demonstrate their creative art.  Nor does one have to travel far to find other filming communities; both the Southern Ohio Filmmakers Association (SOFA) and Mid Ohio Filmmakers Association (MOFA) are near Dayton. And of course the Ohio Film Office, and the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission are there to help creative filmmakers.

The point is that while my hometown was mentioned by name, it should come as no surprise. Nor, for that matter, if it were your hometown; for while these groups and associations are always helpful, the truth is that any art can flourish wherever there are creative people. Location certainly can be a benefit in building an artistic career, but nothing replaces individual creativity and ingenuity. Which when you go back and listen to Mr. Hawke’s comments, you realize that was his point. Art’s only limits are found in our lack of expression or use of our creative gifts. So let your art grow – whatever it is and wherever you are. When you do, there really are no limitations.

YouTube Link (a special thank you to Dayton’s own Gina Ferraro for capturing Hawke’s comments at the right moment)

And The Oscar Goes To…

February 21, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

The 87137982_0963th annual Academy Awards salutes the best of 2014 cinema tomorrow night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Go ahead and anticipate one of the most predictable Oscars in recent memory considering most categories have been cemented since the Golden Globes. However, anything is possible when it comes to the 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Here are my predictions in the top six fields.

BEST PICTURE
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Overlooked: A Most Violent Year; Belle; Dear White People; Foxcatcher; Fury; Get On Up; Gone Girl; The Homesman; Ida; Inherent Vice; Interstellar; Into the Woods; Love is Strange; Nightcrawler; Pride; The Skeleton Twins; Snowpiercer; St. Vincent; Two Days, One Night; Unbroken; Under the Skin; The Way He Looks

Should/Will Win: Boyhood

Let’s face it. Selma, the most culturally relevant nominee, has no chance. Sniper, the highest grossing nominee raking in $300 million and counting, has a slight chance. But in the end, this (art house) race is all about a boy and a bird(man). Birdman brilliantly captured the idiosyncrasies of actors (hence its ensemble victory at the Screen Actors Guild Awards), but Boyhood’s groundbreaking, universally engaging portrait of adolescence in all its crazy, confusing and thought-provoking complexity will be rightfully rewarded.

BEST DIRECTOR

Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Alejandro G. Iñarritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game

Overlooked: Paul Thomas Anderson, Inherent Vice; Damien Chazelle, Whiplash; JC Chandor, A Most Violent Year; Ava DuVernay, Selma; Clint Eastwood, American Sniper; David Fincher, Gone Girl; Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler; Angelina Jolie, Unbroken; Tommy Lee Jones, The Homesman; Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer; James Marsh, The Theory of Everything; Christopher Nolan, Interstellar; Pawel Pawlikowski, Ida; Ira Sachs, Love is Strange; Tate Taylor, Get On Up; Matthew Warchus, Pride

Should Win: Linklater
Will Win: Iñarritu

The sheer originality and artistic perseverance of Linklater spearheading a project for 12 years (with cast incredibly intact!) would be enough in a less competitive year. Still, Iñarritu’s dazzlingly dynamic flair, bolstered by the impressive fluidity of crafting a film as if it were one long tracking shot, is the stronger technical achievement and likely seals the deal.

BEST ACTOR

Steve Carrell, Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper, American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

Overlooked: Ben Affleck, Gone Girl; Chad Boseman, Get On Up; Ellar Coltrane, Boyhood; James Corden, Into the Woods; Robert Downey, Jr., The Judge; Chris Evans, Snowpiercer; Ralph Fiennes, The Grand Budapest Hotel; Brendan Gleeson, Calvary; Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler; Bill Hader, The Skeleton Twins; Tom Hardy, The Drop and Locke; Oscar Isaac, A Most Violent Year; Tommy Lee Jones, The Homesman; Irrfan Khan, The Lunchbox; John Lithgow, Love is Strange; Matthew McConaughey, Interstellar; Alfred Molina, Love is Strange; Bill Murray, St. Vincent; Jack O’Connell, Unbroken; David Oyelowo, Selma; Joaquin Phoenix, Inherent Vice; Miles Teller, Whiplash; Denzel Washington, The Equalizer; Ben Wishaw, Lilting; John Lloyd Young, Jersey Boys

Should Win: Keaton
Will Win: Redmayne

The immense wave of acclaim given to Keaton’s amazing tour-de-force as washed-up action star Riggan Thomson reminds me of Mickey Rourke’s awards season respect for The Wrestler. After all, Hollywood loves a comeback, especially when the actor or actress in question had seemingly disappeared. Keaton was mesmerizing but Redmayne, a Tony Award winner and one of the finest actors of his generation, pulled out the stops in prime Daniel Day-Lewis fashion as physicist Stephen Hawking. Redmayne’s tremendous physicality alone will probably be enough to take the Oscar from Keaton akin to Sean Penn (Milk) edging Rourke in a similarly nail-biting contest six years ago.

BEST ACTRESS

Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore, Still Alice
Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon, Wild

Overlooked: Jennifer Aniston, Cake; Emily Blunt, Into the Woods; Scarlett Johansson, Under the Skin; Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Belle and Beyond the Lights; Jenny Slate, Obvious Child; Hilary Swank, The Homesman; Agata Trzebuchowska, Ida; Kristen Wigg, The Skeleton Twins

Should/Will Win: Moore

Moore, a four-time nominee, should have reaped Oscar gold in this category for Far From Heaven, but will finally win for her marvelously detailed, poignant and heartbreaking portrayal of a linguistics professor diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. She’s an absolute shoo-in and deservedly so.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Robert Duvall, The Judge
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
Edward Norton, Birdman
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons, Whiplash

Overlooked: Riz Ahmed, Nightcrawler; Alec Baldwin, Still Alice; Albert Brooks, A Most Violent Year; Nelsan Ellis, Get On Up; Zach Galifianakis, Birdman; James Gandolfini, The Drop; Domhnall Gleeson, Unbroken; Neil Patrick Harris, Gone Girl; Bill Nighy, Pride; Logan Lerman, Fury; Tyler Perry, Gone Girl; Tim Roth, Selma; Martin Short, Inherent Vice; Channing Tatum, Foxcatcher; Tom Wilkinson, Selma

Should/Will Win: Simmons

Norton stole the show with brazen finesse and no one oozes compassionate masculinity like Ruffalo, but Simmons, resurrecting the visceral evilness he displayed on HBO’s Oz, will reign for his sensational performance as a music teacher from hell.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Laura Dern, Wild
Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
Emma Stone, Birdman
Meryl Streep, Into the Woods

Overlooked: Jessica Chastain, A Most Violent Year; Carrie Coon, Gone Girl; Carmen Ejogo, Selma; Agata Kulesza, Ida; Sienna Miller, American Sniper; Rene Russo, Nightcrawler; Amy Ryan, Birdman; Imelda Staunton, Pride; Tilda Swinton, Snowpiercer; Tessa Thompson, Dear White People; Katherine Waterston, Inherent Vice; Naomi Watts, Birdman and St. Vincent

Should/Will Win: Arquette

Streep gave a phenomenal Sondheim master class and Stone ignited the screen in her fiery tirade opposite Keaton, but it’s all about Arquette. With beautifully gentle understatement, Arquette, the emotional center of Boyhood, brought anguish, grace and sensitivity to her captivating portrayal of a single mother coping with disappointments, new beginnings and the passage of time.

The 87th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will be telecast live Sun. Feb 22 on ABC beginning at 7 p.m. In related news, The Neon Movies, 130 E. Fifth St. in downtown Dayton, and the Little Art Theatre, 247 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs, will host Oscar parties. FilmDayton is offering a virtual Oscar party.
