Help Celebrate Local Veteran’s 100th Birthday

A Dayton veteran who spent his life giving back to others is turning 100 years old next month, and his family and friends are asking for the community’s help with a special birthday surprise.

Master Sergeant Richard Gard will be turning 100 on April 6, and his loved ones are asking the community to send him birthday cards. They are collecting the cards for the big reveal on his birthday.

Master Sergeant Richard Gard was born April 6, 1923 in the Ohio half of Union City, and his family settled in the Dayton area.

He met his future wife, Gladys, while roller skating in Dayton. Upon his completion of basic training, Gladys traveled to Louisiana where they were married prior to his deployment overseas. They will celebrate their 79th wedding anniversary in June.

Landing in Normandy on D-Day+3, Master Sergeant Gard participated in the breakout from the beachhead through France to Brest.

During the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. In addition, he earned two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart, as well as decorations from Bastogne, Belgium and France.

Master Sergeant Gard was recalled to active duty for the Korean War in 1950. After the war, he earned an engineering degree from the University of Dayton.

In addition to the cards, a birthday parade will be held for Master Sergeant Gard on April 6 at 5:30 p.m. starting on Pearhill Drive in West Carrollton.

The parade will feature Centerville VFW Post 9550, West Carrollton Police and Fire, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Harold Schnell Elementary, West Carrolton Marching Band, plus a flyover from a 1943 PT-19A Cornell warplane by the Butler County Warbirds.

Our World Needs Hugs….Enter Mama Bears!

We are at a weird crossroads in our country. America was once the vision of open-mindedness and acceptance, but we have fast become a cancel culture hell-bent on us vs. them. Blame whatever you need to….social media, Trump, Russia….but the truth is, empathy can only come from one place….US! In this time of deep judgement, angst and side-eyeing, Emmy-winner Daresha Kyi‘s ‘Mama Bears’ documentary teaches us about the impact of self-awareness. (Kyi is from Dayton!)

Daresha Kyi Connects Again!

The film centers on conservative, ultra-religious mothers who happen to be parents of LGBTQ children. And there within lies the door to understanding. It isn’t easy, quite the opposite. Their journeys that we join are tough, raw and at times, very uncomfortable. Luckily, Dayton was privy to this heartfelt film thanks to the Director herself arranging a screening at the Neon Movies. Thanks to the Hope Collective Church, the film was free…they hold their services at the Neon on Sundays. Fear not, however, the film is coming to PBS on the Independent Lens series Tuesday, June 20th. And it is a must-see.

The ‘Mama Bears’ movement is expanding daily, as more and more mothers ‘come out of their own closets’ to help their LGBTQ children navigate a less than perfect world. Their stories….told masterfully, because it is those dealing with the situations that share them…range from a lesbian making her way ‘out’ with a devout, yet open mother; a trans child, facing a Texas backlash about bathrooms; and a mother learning that her son may not be exactly what she envisioned. Each, heart-wrenching and jolting to these mothers who have long relied on the word of ‘God’ as translated by a fundamentalist congregation.

You are with the mothers, on a path….at times wanting to shake them silly, and at others wanting to hold them and show them they can do this! And they will ‘get there’…in their own time…weaving through a series of setbacks as they try to keep their deep Christian voice, and yet protect their own. For those in the LGBTQ community, the pain is familiar. The idea that parents can be so sure of their feelings, that they lose sight of their love for their own children…hard to swallow, but it’s real. It’s all around us. And as the film unfolds, slowly, they begin to hear a different voice…a new idea….a threat of sorts to their everyday…but oh, what reconciliation can do! They begin to realize that nothing and no one should stand in the way of a good life for their kids. That inner-voice is really the driving force behind any and all Mama Bears!

We see in the struggle, the need for acceptance and camaraderie. And, through Facebook, and word of mouth, these newly awakened mothers find their children, themselves and their pack! That pack, Mama Bears, can be seen throughout our country at PRIDE events, PFLAG meet-ups and more….there for one simple reason, to give Free Hugs to those LGBTQ kids and adults, who have lost that connection in their own life.

Allow yourself the opportunity to watch the film…it’s hopeful, Especially in this world of ‘No Drag Queens,’ ‘No Trans,’ and ‘No Way But My Way’ mentalities. Our world is suffering, not because we lack the ability to understand and listen….but because we CHOOSE not TO! You might be surprised how this film helps us open up….and open wide our arms for one big MAMA BEAR HUG!

Miami Valley Cycling Summit Returns May 19

Registration is now open for the Miami Valley Cycling Summit hosted by Bike Miami Valley and the City of Dayton. This free, regional event will be held in person on May 19th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the downtown branch of the Dayton Metro Library. The event welcomes elected officials, government staff, local leaders and cycling advocates to participate. Registration is open at www.CyclingSummit.com.

A keynote by former Dayton local, and founder of the Miami Valley Cycling Summit, Andy Williamson is sure to inspire. Today, Andy supports West Virginia’s efforts to attract and retain talent and build a stronger, more vibrant outdoor economy and communities through his role as the Director of Outdoor Community Development at the Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative. In his keynote, Andy will detail why outdoor recreation infrastructure and trails are the key foundational element to building a vibrant, active, healthy community, resilient economy, and quality visitor experience.

The MVCS aims to use the power of cycling to drive economic development in communities, both large and small, throughout the Miami Valley region. This year’s theme is “Cycling Builds Community.” Content experts will detail how cycling can improve the transportation, health, and economic vitality of the Miami Valley. Sessions will occur following the morning keynote and will cover a variety of topics including, but not limited to: a regional bikeways update, a bike tour of cycling infrastructure, equity in engineering, and a review of new bike parks.

The Miami Valley Cycling Summit begins with the Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast at RiverScape MetroPark (7-9am) before the formal program begins at 9am at the Dayton Metro Library’s Eichelberger Forum. Registration includes lunch, breakout sessions, and a post-reception.

Miami Valley Meals Introduces Chef-Crafted Spice Blends For 3rd Anniversary

Miami Valley Meals uses chef-led teams to transforms recovered (a.k.a. “rescued”) foods into hearty and nutritious prepared meals that are then distributed to a network of nonprofit partners serving the hungry in the Miami Valley—free of charge. They currently distribute an average of 3,700 meals per week to 45+ partners per month.

These meals play a critical role in the full spectrum of services that help the underserved people in our communities. By providing our network of partner organizations with free meals, we bolster their food inventory and free up resources for their other programs, such as providing shelter, healthcare services, addiction recovery programs, and other assistance.

As part of their 3rd anniversary Miami Valley Meals has just introduced 3 chef-crafted spice blends. These blends are uniquely crafted by MVM chefs Angie, Laura, and Patricio and produced locally in partnership with Big Axe Spice.

Applications Open for Dayton’s Neighborhood Leadership Institute

Applications are now being accepted for the 38th Neighborhood Leadership Institute, presented by the City of Dayton. The Neighborhood Leadership Institute is a 10-week, 13-session program educating Dayton residents about local government, City of Dayton resources, and community leadership.

The 2023 program will kick-off on Tuesday, April 25. It is comprised of workshops, skillbuilding components and a day-long bus tour of Dayton neighborhoods. Participants hear presentations from community, business and government leaders on topics such as Dayton history, the role of city government, the criminal justice system, and cultural diversity. Class members also complete field assignments and a practicum requiring development of a grassroots project within their community.

Cake, Hope & Love & Giovanni’s Stepping Up, After High Schooler Has Heart Attack

This Stebbins high school senior, Ebonie, was at track practice and started to not feel good and went to see the trainers. She passed out and with the quick thinking of the trainers, they started CPR. They had to use a defibrillator to try to restart her heart. She was then transported to Dayton Children’s and had to be shocked a total of 7x by the time she got there. Upon arriving at Children’s, it was determined she needed to be transferred to Cincinnati Children’s.

Ebonie was Careflighted down to Cincinnati where she received a heart cath and was found to have 2 blockages in her heart. Ebonie was then transferred to UC Medical where they specialize in treating blockages of the LAD. Doctors were able to clear one of the blockages in her heart, but there was still a second they could not clear. The second blockage was in place for at least 30 hours before it was discovered. It is unclear what damage if any, Ebonies heart sustained.

Ebonie had what is called a Widowmaker heart attack, a heart attack in which you have a full blockage of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). She is currently on ECMO to try and give her heart and lungs some much-needed rest. The next few days will determine if she improves on her own or if an internal heart pump will be needed. They are anticipating being in the hospital for the next at least 4 weeks.

According to The Teague’s, who own Cake, Hope & Love in Beavercreek, and are friends of the family, “she’s a sassy ray of sunshine with dimples. She’s smart, driven, athletic, and a pure joy to be around. She’s been a football teammate for my son, a player for my husband to coach, our dog sitter, and a sweet friend to our family. I even have her basketball picture magnet on my oven here at the bakery!”

To help offset the cost of the bills and for her mom Beverly be with her at the hospital Cake, Hope and Love are donating proceeds of their sales yesterday and today, as well as from St. Patrick’s Day Cookie Boxes you can order this his week. You can pre-order your cookies online for pick up next Friday or Saturday.

Also joining the fundraising for Ebonie, Giovanni’s Fairborn has stepped up and will be opening for business this “Tuesday from 4-7pm, and doing what will likely be their last soup event of the winter. They will also be selling pizzas, salads, desserts, and a feature dinner that we will announce soon. A portion of our sales this Tuesday will be going to this young lady and her family. Her mother is currently staying at a hotel across the street and as you can imagine the ICU stay and the hotel are costing the family an astronomical amount. We want to help. As a mother I could not imagine my high school age daughter fighting for her life after a heart attack. As a daughter who’s father had heart issues I know how delicate the situation can be. Please please come out and get a pizza and one of our homemade soups or even just a slice of tiramisu. I know our Giovanni’s family always shows up when it’s important and we really hope to see you Tuesday from 4-7. We will post the full menu soon.”

Miami County Launches Sweets & Spirits Trail

The Sweets & Spirits Trail is a great way to explore Miami County and find some of your favorite things, like candy and cocktails, cookies and craft beer, or even brownies and bourbon. Dayton Dinner Theater’s Big Lebowski Movie Party is happening at The Brightside this Sunday, March 12, 2023.

DDT is a great way to spend time with family and friends when the days are short and nights are long. Make the most of it by sipping the sublime themed drinks with your loved ones, while flaunting your movie-themed attire.

What to expect from a Dayton Dinner Theater event? First off, make sure you indulge in the creatively themed food provided by Brock Masterson catering. DDNews Discontinues Printing Saturday Paper

Cox First Media will begin printing the Dayton Daily News, Springfield News-Sun and Journal-News six days a week, eliminating the Saturday printed edition on May 6. Though there will be no home delivery or single copy Saturday paper, the Saturday edition will be available through all digital channels, including the daily ePaper, newsletters and websites.

Every day, more loyal subscribers and more new readers are getting their news online as the evolution toward digital journalism accelerates. Currently, most newspaper readers rely on digital products for trusted local news.

Ending the Saturday print edition will help manage the escalating cost of producing and delivering the printed newspaper. There is no anticipation of further reductions, though the company will continue to align resources to serve the most readers.

Great Riverway Summit To Be Held in Sidney April 14th

The 2023 Riverway Summit is to be held at the recently restored Historic Sidney Theater in downtown Sidney, Ohio on Friday, April 14. The agenda features Amy Acton, former Director of the Ohio Department of Health. Acton now leads RAPID 5, a plan to connect Franklin County’s trail network with five stream corridors to put nature at the center of quality of life and economic growth.

Hosted by the City of Sidney, the Summit also features Lydia Mihalik, Director of the Ohio Department of Development who will speak on statewide initiatives, and the intersection of economic development and tourism. Sidney City Manager, Andrew Bowsher, will speak on the city’s recent growth, and facilitate a panel discussion of developers who are investing in many Riverway communities.

Sidney and Shelby County have the largest number of manufacturing jobs per capita in Ohio. Including the recent announcement of 1,200 new jobs by Semcorp, producer of electric vehicle battery components.

In addition, there will be exciting announcements from the mayors of every Riverway community including: Hamilton, Sidney, Troy, Trenton, Piqua, West Carrollton, Miamisburg, Middletown, Franklin, and the county commissioners of Miami and Montgomery counties. Director Dan Foley will highlight the Riverway’s recent achievements and announce special new programs in development.

The agenda also includes tours of Tawawa Park, architectural landmarks and historic sites. FYI’s solution is to rescue and protect those families and children to prevent future trauma by redirecting their paths through education, training, and support in our multiple programs.

We invite you to join us for their spring fundraising dinner, graciously hosted by the Knights of Columbus #3724. The evening promises to provide a unique insight into the challenges that our families and children are facing everyday. We will share how we are addressing these issues and how you can be part of the solution. The night will begin with a pulled pork dinner (and sides), made from scratch by the Knights. “Sing Out Loud” community choral event kicks off the Campaign for the Arts!

Culture Works invite you to join them as they launch their 2023 Campaign for the Arts this Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the Victoria Theatre for a special “Sing Out Loud” event. During this special performance you’ll hear from the Culture Works team and Dr. Sue Edwards, President of Wright State University and this year’s Campaign Chair, about the importance of supporting our local creative community.

The stars of the program are our friends and neighbors! Sing Out Loud will feature more than 100 local arts champions coming together as one choir singing familiar songs from the stage and the screen. You’ll be certain to spot a familiar face or two on stage, and you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a song in your heart!

Artist of the Week: Stephanie Beiser

I wanted to meet Stephanie after seeing her work at the Dayton Art Museum’s store and at the Contemporary Dayton’s CoSHOP. Then I heard about her latest project and knew I should visit her studio right away.

Although her pottery is amazing, Stephanie tells me she thinks of herself as more of a teacher than a potter.

“When I first came to Dayton I taught at Sinclair and then at Stivers School for the Arts” she told me. “Now I teach pottery at Edison State Community College and for the last six years I also teach at the University of Dayton.”

“I also work part-time at Cornell Studio Supply. That’s sort of part of my own continuing education in ceramic arts because Cornell brings in some of the country’s best ceramic artists for workshops. That gives me the chance to learn new techniques or just to get inspired by the best people in the field.”

Fun Fact: UD Arena has hosted more NCAA® Tournaments than any other venue in the nation!

There’s no denying it, Dayton is a basketball mecca! March is almost here and that means basketball madness returns to Dayton. In 2023, Dayton will proudly welcome and host the NCAA® First Four® Tournament (March 14 & 15), and the Ohio High School Athletic Association Girls (March 9-11) and Boys (March 17-19) Basketball State Tournaments, as well as community events, coordinated by The Big Hoopla, surrounding the NCAA® First Four® games.

NCAA® First Four®

The Dayton region is the Epicenter of College Basketball, and fans from around the country know that THE ROAD STARTS HERE™! March Madness is alive and well in Dayton – we look forward to welcoming the NCAA® First Four® Tournament back to UD Arena this year AND to hosting the tournament through 2026!

There will be two games in each session (night), on March 14 & 15, and the winners of each game will advance on the road to the Final Four®. We won’t know the schedule of who’s playing in the First Four® Tournament until NCAA® Selection Sunday, on March 12, but we can guarantee the games will played in front of packed houses at UD Arena, where the energy is always electric!

The Big Hoopla

In Dayton, college basketball holds a special place in our hearts; get ready for the The Big Hoopla to return to Dayton in 2023. Since 2012, The Big Hoopla has showcased Dayton’s collaborative spirit, basketball unity and affinity for our military heroes serving locally and around the world. The First Four® NCAA® Basketball Tournament presents a tremendous opportunity to come together as a community, and as a country, to celebrate the great things that can be accomplished with teamwork, dedication, and a shared goal. Join in on the fun by participating in one or all three of these planned community activities.

1. Hoopla 4 Miler

Here in Dayton, it’s about more than just basketball, it’s four full days of activities and the first of all those events is the Big Hoopla 4 Miler. On Selection Sunday, March 12, the day begins with a 4-mile run that starts and finishes at the heart of basketball, UD Arena. The course offers skyline views, crosses the Great Miami River, and loops past Carillon Historical Park.

All participants receive a long-sleeve tech tee, a custom finisher medal, free race photos, tons of post-race food. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m. The top three overall male and female runners will receive a CASH PRIZE, and the top three overall male and female masters (40+), as well as the top three finishers in each age group, receive two (2) tickets to the NCAA First Four® at UD Arena on March 14 & 15, 2023. 2. Hoopla STEM Challenge

Ready to learn and have fun – all for free?! Do your kids wanna shoot some hoops? On Sunday, March 12, bring your family to participate in a FREE basketball ‘hot shot’ and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education contest with prizes awarded for each shot made! The event is open to boys and girls grades K–8 and will take place at the Dayton Convention Center.

The event ties together the excitement and passion for college basketball to the power of STEM education. Regional and national partners will be on-site to engage students with hands-on science, technology, engineering and math demonstrations, as well as two fun, one-hour shows with award-winning science entertainer Eric Energy at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration is free, and more information will be posted on the event site.

OHSAA Basketball State Tournaments

As if the NCAA® First Four® Tournament Tournament wasn’t exciting enough, Dayton and UD Arena will also be hosting the Ohio High School Athletic Association Girls and Boys Basketball State Tournaments in March! The state’s high school basketball elite will battle it out on the hallowed floor of UD Arena to see who will be named OHSAA Girls & Boys State Basketball Champion! Don’t miss the action.

1. 2022 OHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament March 9-11, University of Dayton Arena

Thursday, March 9 (State Semifinals): DII – 11 a.m. & 1 p.m., DIV – 6 & 8 p.m.

Friday, March 10 (State Semifinals): DIII – 11 a.m. & 1 p.m., DI – 6 & 8 p.m.

Saturday, March 11 (State Championships): DII – 10:45 a.m., DIV – 2 p.m., DIII – 5:15 p.m., DI – 8:30 p.m.

Girls state tournament all-session tickets are already on sale and can be purchased at the OHSAA ticketing website.

Girls basketball all-session reserved tickets are $112 each, while premium seat tickets are $144 each. Single-session tickets for the girls basketball state tournament go on sale at noon on Sunday, March 5, Single-session general admission tickets are $16 for adults, $12 for students and $20 for premium seats.

2. 2022 OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament March 17-19, University of Dayton Arena

Friday, March 17 (State Semifinals): DII – 10:45 a.m. & 2 p.m., DIV – 5:15 & 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, March 18 (State Semifinals): DIII – 10:45 a.m. & 2 p.m., DI – 5:15 & 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 19 (State Championships): DII – 10:45 a.m., DIV – 2 p.m., DII – 5:15 p.m., DI – 8:30 p.m.

Boys state tournament all-session tickets are already on sale and may be purchased at the OHSAA ticketing website.

Boys basketball all-session reserved tickets are $168 each, while premium all-session tickets are $216 each. Tickets for the Center Court Club, which include lounge access between games, concession vouchers and seats very near the court are $500 each. Single-session tickets for the Boys Basketball State Tournament go on sale at noon on Sunday, March 12. Single-session adult tickets are $16 for adults, $12 for students and $20 for premium seats.

All ticket prices include parking fees. The University of Dayton Arena is a cashless facility. Tailgating and overnight parking are not permitted.

East Monument Ave to be closed for up to four months

According to a press release from the City of Dayton beginning Monday, Feb. 20, Monument Avenue between Keowee Street and Findlay Street will be closed to through traffic. A Department of Water contractor will be installing a new water line from Findlay Street to the City of Dayton Ottawa Yards Entrance.

A detour using First, Findlay and Keowee Streets will be posted. Monument Avenue will remain open to local traffic between Keowee Street and the Ottawa Yards Entrance. The closure is expected to last approximately four months.
