Ohio Sales Tax Holiday Aug 1 – 14

July 30, 2025 By Dayton937

This year’s Ohio Sales Tax Holiday runs from Aug. 1-14, giving you the opportunity to purchase qualifying items in-store and online without paying state sales tax.

If you’re looking to save some extra money, the Ohio Sales Tax Holiday is back once again for 2025, allowing shoppers “to make qualifying purchases both in-store and online without paying state sales tax.”

“The timing of this year’s sales tax holiday not only supports families preparing for back-to-school, but also provides relief on other important household needs,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a press release earlier this year.

So what’s included and exempt during Ohio’s 2025 Sales Tax Holiday?

“Almost all tangible personal property priced at $500 or less is tax-free,” according to Gov. DeWine’s office.

Need examples? Here’s a list from the Ohio Department of Taxation of some items that will be tax-free during this period:

  • Electronics: Computers, televisions and other gadgets
  • Clothing: Any apparel items
  • Books: All types, including novels and textbooks
  • Home goods: Furniture, kitchenware and home décor
  • Plants: Indoor and outdoor plants
  • Sporting goods: Equipment and apparel for sports
  • Food and beverages: Dine-in food, dietary supplements and soft drinks

“Many other items will also be exempt from sales tax during this period,” according to the Ohio Department of Taxation.

WHAT ITEMS ARE EXCLUDED?

The following items will still be taxed during the Sales Tax Holiday:

  • Watercraft or outboard motors
  • Motor vehicles
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Tobacco products
  • Vapor products
  • Items containing marijuana

WHAT ABOUT ONLINE SHOPPING?

Yes! Qualifying items purchased online will also be tax-free.

Here’s how the Ohio Department of Taxation explains it:

“Qualified items sold to consumers by mail, telephone, e-mail or internet shall qualify for the sales tax exemption if the consumer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.”

Shipping and Handling

  • If all items in a shipment qualify as eligible items and the sales price for each is within the sales tax holiday price threshold, the shipping and handling charges are not taxable.
  • If the shipment includes exempt items and taxable items, the seller should allocate the shipping and handling charges by a percentage based on the total price of the taxable items to the total price of all the items in the shipment. The retailer must charge tax on the portion of the shipping and handling charges allocated to the taxable items in the shipment.

CAN A STORE / SELLER CHOOSE NOT TO PARTICIPATE?

No. The states says the sales tax holiday is set by law “and vendors must comply.”

WHAT’S THE $500 PRICE LIMIT?

Items selling for $500 or less will be tax-free.

“If an item sells for more than $500, tax is due on the entire selling price,” according to the Ohio Department of Taxation.

WHAT ABOUT EXCHANGES AND RETURNS?

Here are the three points you need to know from the Ohio Department of Taxation:

  • If a consumer buys an eligible item during the sales tax holiday and later exchanges it for the same item, the retailer should not charge sales tax even if the exchange is made after the end of the sales tax holiday.
  • If a consumer buys an eligible item during the sales tax holiday and returns the item after the tax holiday period for credit on the purchase of a different item, the retailer must charge sales tax on the sale of the newly purchased item, even if it would have been eligible for the exemption during the sales tax holiday.
  • If a consumer buys an eligible item before the holiday period but returns the item during the sales tax holiday period and receives credit on the purchase of a different item of eligible property, no sales tax is due on the sale of the new item. The retailer must provide the consumer credit for both the purchase price and sales tax paid on the item being returned.

Starbucks Brings Back Raspberry Drinks

July 30, 2025 By Dayton937

Raspberry fans, rejoice! Starbucks is bringing the sweet and juicy taste of raspberry back in the U.S. for a limited time starting July 29. And fans can experience it in a whole new way with the new Raspberry Cream Cold Brew.

The longtime fan-favorite flavor can be enjoyed as a delicious customization* for a variety of Starbucks beverages and fans can experience it in a whole new way with the new Raspberry Cream Cold Brew. But just like a summer breeze, it won’t last long!

Danielle Paris worked in the Starbucks development kitchen to create this new version of raspberry syrup for its nationwide launch. The new version has the same flavor that customers remember, now with a rich sangria color made from fruits and vegetables.

“For me, raspberry is bright and refreshing, with a wonderful aroma and that sweet/tart flavor that evokes summertime,” she said. “I think it will be a fun way to customize our beverages.”

The team created a new raspberry signature beverage, Raspberry Cream Cold Brew. The rich and refreshing beverage features a frothy layer of raspberry cream cold foam that complements the smooth and bold Starbucks® Cold Brew, sweetened with vanilla syrup.

“The notes of raspberry in our  cold foam perfectly balances the smooth, cocoa flavors of our cold brew, making it a vibrant, flavorful pairing,” Paris said.

Here are a few favorite customizations*.

White Chocolate Mocha with Raspberry Syrup: The juicy raspberry flavors paired with rich and creamy espresso and white chocolate sauce come together for an elegant beverage. Available hot and iced.

Strawberry Acai Refresher with Raspberry Syrup: Sweet strawberry flavors with passionfruit and açaí notes get a rich boost from raspberry syrup, shaken with ice and real strawberry pieces.

Iced Green Tea with Raspberry Syrup: A refreshing combination of raspberry and iced green tea blended with mint, lemongrass and lemon verbena.

*Customizing any beverage with raspberry syrup may incur an additional charge.

Dayton at Work and Play: Tony & Pete’s

July 28, 2025 By Bill Franz

Visit to Tony & Pete’s (129 East Third)
This sandwich shop opened in 2022, but this was our first visit. I decided I wanted to try it when I heard that their business was growing so fast that they had rented the shop next door. They’ll bake bread and do some of their prep work and their catering work there while customers continue to order and eat at the original shop.
I ordered their Stretto’s spicy salami sandwich featuring salami, parmesan, arugula, spicy spread and Calabrian honey. My wife chose Turkey Pesto, which has turkey, mozzarella, house pesto, roasted red peppers and arugula. The sandwiches were delicious and large – more than we could finish. We decided that next time we’d split one sandwich and then walk to Val’s Bakery for a dessert.
There’s quite a bit of seating inside, but we chose the patio and watched a steady stream of customers enter. In addition to the sandwiches, they have salads and a few grocery items.

I read that Tony & Pete’s was started by a husband-and-wife team that met at Wright State. Like many of us they worked part-time during college. By the time they graduated they had moved up to food service management positions and decided to stay in that industry. They worked in well-known restaurants in Cincinnati, in New York and finally in Chicago. When the pandemic hit they moved back to Dayton and started planning their own business here.

The business has been growing rapidly, and Tony & Pete’s says they may soon be expanding to new locations.

McCoy on Movies: FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS

July 28, 2025 By Tabari McCoy

Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Sue Storm (Vanessa
Kirby), Reed Richard (Pedro Pascal) and Johnny Storm
(Joseph Quinn) prepare for the moment in
FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS.
© 2025 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS

You have to give Marvel Studios credit. For with there already being four – yes, FOUR – Fantastic Four films in existence (in case you didn’t know, there’s a 1994 B-movie that predates all the turn of the century versions and it’s … yeah), bringing Marvel’s first family to life has never been an easy challenge. This isn’t even factoring in supposed “super hero fatigue” coupled with the rise in Internet chatter about “woke” superheroes. (While the film mostly avoided the latter, some were miffed that Pedro ‘I’m now starring in EVERYTHING’ Pascal is taking up the mantle of Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic.)

In the case of FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, director Matt Shakman has delivered what is easily the best take on the heroic quartet – in this case, taking place on Earth 818 and not the main 616 where we “live” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whereas Pascal is able to capture the genius-yet-socially-awkward-but-underlying-caring nature of Richards greatly, Kirby makes Sue Storm’s dedication to both Reed and the concept of family integral to both the team and the overall story. Quinn captures Storm’s hotheaded (pun intended) nature, but balances it with an intelligence previous versions haven’t often shown. The most intriguing individual may be Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s portrayal of Ben Grimm a.k.a. The Thing, which focuses on all the elements of humanity his character tries to maintain despite his physical stature.

Now, how this iteration of the Four eventually make their collective way to Earth 616 remains a mystery, one which is only intensified by one of the two post-credit scenes following the film’s conclusion. But in the meantime, FIRST STEPS takes significant ones at re-establish the importance of the Fantastic Four along with their potential for the next phase of the MCU.

For longstanding fans of the comic book quartet, that’s a fantastic prospect to look forward to in the future.

The Sweet Retreat Hosts Fundraiser To Bury Hershall Creachbaum

July 23, 2025 By Dayton937

The brother and sister ownership team of The Sweet Retreat were deeply impacted by hearing of the the passing of Hershall Creachbaum, a sweet 7-year-old boy with autism, who was tragically taken from this world.

To honor Hershall’s memory and support his family during this incredibly difficult time, they will be holding a fundraiser next Monday, July 28th. 20% of all sales will be directly donated to help cover his funeral and burial costs. They have spoken with his grandmother, who has graciously given her blessing for this event.
Hershall’s favorite ice cream flavors were vanilla and Superman, so we are adding a special item to our menu in his memory: “Hershall’s Superman Sundae.” This sundae includes layers of Superman and vanilla ice cream, topped with marshmallow, whipped cream, and sprinkles. They hope it brings a little joy as we remember Hershall.
Please join them this upcoming Monday as our community comes together to support Hershall’s family and celebrate the life of a very special little boy. Your support means the world to us and to his loved ones.

Culture Works to Host A Regency Ball

July 21, 2025 By Dayton937

Culture Works invites you to be transported to a time of elegance, wit, and refined revelry at a Regency Ball on November 14, 2025. Join them for an immersive evening that celebrates Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, raises monies for the arts, and adds a piquant Regency flair to the season.

Whether you’re a seasoned historical dancer or a newcomer lured by the romance of empire-waist gowns and cravats, the Culture Works Regency Ball offers a unique opportunity to experience the grace and gaiety of a bygone era. Guests may choose Creative Black Tie or Regency Inspired formal wear. Reach out to local purveyors of finery, then don your flowing muslins, military coats, and dainty slippers—and come ready to promenade, converse, and waltz the night away under the glittering Arcade dome.

In the Regency period, such an evening would unfold in two parts: a select number of guests would be invited to join the dinner party before the dancing begins—an honor traditionally reserved for close acquaintances or distinguished guests. Following the meal, the ballroom would open to all attendees for the main event: an elegant night of dancing, music, and merriment. This tiered structure reflects the customs of the era, when invitations to dinner were limited and intimate, while the ball itself welcomed a broader assembly for socializing and spirited revelry.

In true Regency fashion, Culture Works is offering multiple options for participation. Begin your evening at 6:30 pm with a sit-down dinner from Bernstein’s Fine Catering, where guests are invited to engage in social intercourse and enjoy a meal inspired by historic menus, and complimented by fine wines.

Then enter the ballroom where an ensemble will set the tone, playing the music of the era as renowned dance callers Tom and Toni Tumbusch guide you through the steps of traditional country dances. No partner? No experience? No problem—dances are taught and called in the moment, and the emphasis is on the festive, not perfection. Even Mr. Collins could show a fine leg under the Tumbuschs’ tutelage.

Or you can enter the ballroom at 8:30 pm, fresh from your dressing table. Late entry tickets allow guests to choose to be announced as they enter the ballroom. Then join in the dancing of traditional country dances, sample delicious desserts, enjoy complimentary punch, and use your drink tickets to enjoy something a bit stronger. Culture Works passport holders receive a $10.00 discount on late entry ball tickets, just enter your valid passport number on the ticket page.

Curtis Bowman, Director of Engagement for Culture Works, says “this Regency Ball is more than just a dance, it’s a celebration of community, culture, and imagination. From the moment you step through the door, you’re stepping into another world—one where letters arrive by post, glances across the ballroom matter, and every turn on the dance floor tells a story.”

So press your gloves, polish your shoes, and prepare for an unforgettable night of elegance, connection, and time-traveling delight. One may use these links to acquire Tickets or engage as a Sponsor. We are so looking forward to it, there is no felicity like a ball.

July 20, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Summer restaurant week kicks off tonight and runs through July 27th.  This week of 3 course dining deals began in 2005 (when I was President of the local restaurant association).  At the height of it’s popularity over 55 local eateries participated offering meals for $20.05, with the cost going up a penny each year.  As times have moved on and food costs have risen the 3 course meal has survived, but the price point has changed a lot due to rising food costs, with restaurants offering meals from priced between $20.25-$55.25.  Just over 20 restaurants have been announced for this summer’s promotion. A few businesses are also offering lunch options.  Please double check the hours for your destination as many of them are not open all days during the promotion.  One dollar for each meal will be donated to the MVRA Education Foundation.

Participating  Restaurants this week are:

Roadtrip: 7 Hidden Museums in the Cincy Region You Need to Visit

July 18, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Think you’ve seen everything the Cincy Region has to offer? Think again! Beyond the well-known attractions lies a world of quirky, off-the-beaten-path museums that are sure to surprise you – and maybe even creep you out a bit. From ventriloquist dummies to an entire exhibit dedicated to neon signs, these museums offer a unique glimpse into the Cincy Region’s culture, history and charm.

Whether you’re traveling for work or a weekend getaway, these hidden gems are worth adding to your itinerary.

Vent Haven is a museum you won’t ever forget (photo: Callie Budrick)

1. Vent Haven Museum (Fort Mitchell, KY)

Step into a world of ventriloquist dummies – yes, you read that right. The Vent Haven Museum houses the world’s largest collection of ventriloquism memorabilia, with over 900 dummies on display. It’s fascinating, a little eerie, and truly one-of-a-kind.

One of the most surprising aspects of the museum is how deeply knowledgeable and passionate the tour guides are. The guide during my visit lived right next door (a park of the job) and opened my eyes to the deeper history of ventriloquism. We discussed everything from changing art forms to the importance of preserving even uncomfortable pieces of history – like dummies with outdated and harmful depictions. It’s thought-provoking in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Note: Tours are by appointment only, so be sure to call ahead to plan your visit.

2. Lucky Cat Museum (Cincinnati, OH)

Love cats? Then you’ll be in heaven at the Lucky Cat Museum! This small but vibrant museum is dedicated entirely to maneki-neko, those iconic waving lucky cats you’ve seen in shops and restaurants. With over 1,000 lucky cats in the collection, the sheer volume alone is impressive.

One of my personal favorites is the disco ball lucky cat – it’s shiny, fun, and impossible not to smile at. Whether you’re a cat person or just appreciate quirky cultural icons, this place is a blast. Like Vent Haven, this museum is by appointment only, so plan ahead!

3. American Sign Museum (Cincinnati, OH)

Walking through the American Sign Museum feels like stepping back in time. The walls are filled with colorful, glowing signs – everything from vintage neon advertisements to hand-painted signs from decades past. While I haven’t made it there myself yet, I’ve heard rave reviews about how immersive the experience is. It’s like time travel, but with neon lights guiding the way.

If you’re a fan of design, history, or Americana, this museum is a must-see. Plus, visitors are welcome to take photos during their tour, and who doesn’t love a good neon glow-up for their Instagram feed?

The miniature train set at Behringer-Crawford Museum
The Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park features an impressive miniature train set that is interesting for all ages (photo: Behringer-Crawford Museum)

4. Behringer-Crawford Museum (Covington, KY)

Located in the beautiful Devou Park, the Behringer-Crawford Museum is a celebration of Northern Kentucky’s local history, art, and culture. From vintage trains to dioramas of life along the Ohio River, the exhibits provide a rich look at the area’s heritage.

One of the coolest features is the interactive train display, which is a hit with visitors of all ages. After your museum visit, take a stroll through the surrounding park for one of the best views of the Cincinnati skyline.

5. German Heritage Museum (Cincinnati, OH)

If you want to dig into Cincinnati’s German roots, the German Heritage Museum is a hidden treasure. Tucked away on a quiet property, the museum offers a collection of artifacts, photographs, and stories that highlight the contributions of German immigrants to the region.

This museum is especially interesting if you’re curious about the Oktoberfest traditions and German architecture that are still prominent in the city today. The Cincy Region is home to the second-largest Oktoberfest celebration in the world, after all.

The exterior of the Cincinnati Fire Museum
From vintage firefighting tools to information about the evolution of fire safety – the Cincinnati Fire Museum is definitely an under-the-radar attraction in downtown Cincinnati (photo: Cincinnati Fire Museum)

6. Cincinnati Fire Museum (Cincinnati, OH)

For something truly unique, visit the Cincinnati Fire Museum, which celebrates the city’s role as the birthplace of paid professional firefighting in the U.S. You’ll find historic fire engines, vintage firefighting gear, and interactive exhibits that let you experience what it was like to be a firefighter in the early days.

Kids (and let’s be honest, adults too) will love the hands-on fire pole and siren displays. It’s a fascinating look at how fire safety has evolved over the centuries. The museum even includes an interactive experience that simulates a house fire with hopes of spreading fire safety awareness to visitors of all ages.

The Cincinnati Observatory, set under a starlit night sky
Don’t miss the chance to stargaze from one of the oldest telescopes in the country at the Cincinnati Observatory (photo: Cincinnati Observatory)

7. Cincinnati Observatory (Mount Lookout, OH)

Ready to reach the stars? The Cincinnati Observatory, known as “The Birthplace of American Astronomy”, offers both historical and stargazing experiences. Established in 1843, this beautifully preserved observatory houses one of the oldest working telescopes in the country.

Visitors can attend public stargazing events where you can view celestial wonders through the telescope. On a clear night, it’s nothing short of magical. Even during the day, the guided tours provide great insight into the history of astronomy and the observatory’s role in science education.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking to add some unique and memorable experiences to your trip, these hidden museums in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are sure to deliver. They offer a mix of fun, history, and local charm that you won’t find anywhere else. So go ahead – step off the beaten path and discover something new!
