McCoy on Movies: PIECE BY PIECE

October 11, 2024 By Tabari McCoy

Pharrell Williams gets animated in director Morgan Neville’s visually stimulating and inspiring LEGO® documentary

“You know, even as LEGO® men, no one know what the heck Daft Punk looks like under these helmets!” Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams take the stage in a scene from director Morgan Neville’s PIECE BY PIECE, a Focus Features release. Credit: Courtesy of Focus Features / © 2024 FOCUS FEATURES LLC.

WWATCH THE TRAILER HERE:

<

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Gabriel Labelle, Cooper Hoffman, Rachel Sennott, Ella Hunt, Cory Michael Smith, Dylan O’Brien, Matt Wood, Lamorne Morris, Nicholas Braun, Kim Matula, Tommy Dewey, Nicolas Podnay, Ellen Boscov, Emily Fairn, Andrew Feldman, Taylor Gray and Mcabe Gregg with J.K. Simmons and Willem Dafoe

DIRECTOR: Morgan Neville

THE BACK STORY: Pharrell Williams is nothing short of a modern day musical wunderkind. He’s produced scores of hits for some of the biggest stars in hip-hop, R&B and even pop music, not to mention his work with his band N*E*R*D (No One Ever Really Dies) and his solo career. But how in the world did a kid who grew up feeling like an outsider in Virginia grow into one of the most influential music composers of the last 35 years? Through the magic of LEGO®, director Morgan Neville – along with 3D animated versions of some of music’s most important figures – seeks to explain how he built up his career PIECE BY PIECE.

THE REVIEW: A story presented in a format that captures the childlike imagination, whimsy and dreams that inspired its subject, PIECE BY PIECE shows that there is not only life in LEGO® filmmaking, but why Williams’ story is one worth telling. In doing so, the film delivers a portrait of an artist that despite making millions, feels relatable to men, women and children worldwide who dare to be creative and follow their dreams.

An animated documentary, let alone one told through animated bricks – let alone one that has to follow scores of LEGO® films that were essentially comedies or traditional comic book-style tales – wouldn’t work for most people. With PIECE BY PIECE, however, we are given an extraordinary insight into Williams’ mind, the path he took to become who he is and the passions that drive him. But in exploring those passions and seeing how they impacted his journey, moviegoers are treated to a story visually is suited for children, but delivers insights directed at the inner child in all of us.

Director Morgan Neville makes wonderful use of the LEGO® format, using the notorious bricks many a parent has stepped on in the middle of the night to showcase different emotions with an Inside Out-like flair. The whimsical figures relay the happiness of Pharrell’s big break and realization of when he has a hit on his hands exceptionally; likewise, disappointments, failure and loss seemingly hit harder watching the animated spirit that is Williams’ fade in his darkest moments. PIECE BY PIECE works so well in both instances due to the inherent nature of both toys and, as its subject mentions in the film, the ability to use them to craft a world out of one’s own desires and creativity.

The LEGO® format allows Neville to bring the complexities of Williams’ creativity and worldview to life in a manner that might not work as well in a traditional format, leading to eye catching imagery memorable as the soundtrack. Remarkably, one needn’t be a Williams fan to enjoy the storytelling of the film nor catch the inspiration it provides (although it certainly would help – brush up on your Golden Era hip-hop and 90s R&B, kids!).

In inviting us to come experience his story, Williams will likely end up inspiring the film’s audience to go explore their own … And that, in addition to clever humor, perfectly sequenced storytelling and a thumping soundtrack, is what makes PIECE BY PIECE a masterpiece.

Noodles & Company Unveils 3 New Pasta Dishes

October 9, 2024 By Dayton937

Following successful trials in three test markets, Noodles & Company rolls out three highly anticipated new bowls nationwide. Inspired by positive guest feedback, these new dishes represent the next evolution of the Noodles menu. To bring this vision to life, Noodles & Company collaborated with The Culinary Edge to introduce bold and innovative flavors that elevate the dining experience.

From smoky bacon and zesty roasted tomatoes to savory artichokes and grilled corn, the new ingredients underscore Noodles’ commitment to pushing boundaries while staying true to what guests love: noodles done right.

  • Lemon Garlic Shrimp Scampi : Noodles’ zesty twist on the classic, with grilled shrimp, roasted tomatoes, and fresh artichokes.
  • Chipotle Chicken Cavatappi : Bringing a little heat with roasted red peppers and smoky chipotle sauce, balanced by grilled chicken and spiral cavatappi noodles.
  • Crispy Chicken Bacon Alfredo : Noodles’ famous 4-cheese alfredo sauce with crispy bacon, and fresh broccoli, delivering a rich, indulgent take on a fan favorite.

“Our new Lemon Garlic Shrimp Scampi , Chipotle Chicken Cavatappi , and Crispy Chicken Bacon Alfredo are just the beginning for Noodles & Company,” said Scott Davis , chief concept officer at Noodles & Company. “This launch is a significant milestone in our journey to deliver more sophisticated, dynamic flavors to our guests, and we’re confident that our fans—new and old alike—will find something to love. We’re just getting started, and these three new dishes are only the beginning of what’s to come.”

The three menu items performed well during an early testing phase at a central location. The Crispy Chicken Bacon Alfredo is selling 50% higher and has stronger guest satisfaction scores than the Alfredo MontAmore, which it will replace. The Lemon Garlic Shrimp Scampi, which falls under the light and fresh menu category, is “selling well and has guest satisfaction scores well above our menu average,” Madsen said. The Chipotle Chicken Cavatappi, which ends Noodles’ lack of Latin-inspired dishes, is also seeing similar results.

The chain removed its Zucchini Roasted Garlic Cream, Leanguini Rosa and Leanguini Fresca as part of its initial refresh at the test location, Madsen said. Last week, the chain added five new or improved dishes and removed a dish from the same central testing locations. The company plans to introduce the next round of dishes after the holiday season ends, during Q1 2025, Madsen said.

SpongeBob ‘Krabby Patty’ Meal Now At Wendy’s

October 8, 2024 By Dayton937

The special cheeseburger — named after the fictional burger concocted by SpongeBob in the show — is served with an additional slice of cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and a “top-secret” Krabby Kollab sauce on a toasted bun.

The Krabby Patty meal is a combo featuring the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger, a Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty, and fries.

The new Frosty option — inspired by Spongebob’s fruity home — is made with vanilla and a swirl of pineapple-and-mango-flavored puree.

Ghost Pepper Chicken Debuts at Popeyes

October 7, 2024 By Dayton937

A brand-new Ghost Pepper Chicken sandwich is hitting menus today, Oct. 7. The “Ghost Pepper” name carries a lot of weight as it was formerly considered the hottest pepper in the world (the Pepper X now holds the title). However, Popeyes promises that its new sandwich “is indulgent, flavorful, and gives just the right kick to make your taste buds tingle without overwhelming the senses—this sandwich is scary good, but not scary spicy!”

It features a buttermilk-battered chicken breast, barrel-cured pickles, and a chili-infused Ghost Pepper Sauce on a toasted brioche bun. In other words, it is identical to Popeyes’ wildly popular classic Chicken Sandwich (700 calories) except for replacing the mayo with that new Ghost Pepper Sauce.

The Ghost Pepper Chicken Sandwich isn’t the only exciting new option that is making its debut at Popeyes today. To celebrate the fall season, the chain is also offering a new Apple Cranberry Tea and Apple Cranberry Lemonade, both of which feature tart cranberry and warm spice flavors. The new beverages and chicken sandwich will only be available for a limited time, so interested customers shouldn’t wait too long before stopping by their local Popeyes.

As a final goodie for fans, Popeyes is offering a new “Chick or Treat” promotion that provides customers with a free Chocolate Chip Biscuit with any purchase over $5. Running from Oct. 7 through Oct. 31, this deal is available online and via the Popeyes app. Guests can also score the freebie in person when they ask for it at checkout.

El Meson Hosts Empanada Fest

October 1, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Empanadas made their first appearance during the Moorish invasions in Medieval Iberia. In fact, in 1520, a cookbook in Catalan describing regional Catalan, French, Italian and Arabian food mentions empanadas by name!

Over time, Spanish colonists carried the dish to Latin America and the Philippines, and it wouldn’t take long for empanadas to become synonymous with that country’s culture. They’re also an essential and popular dish in Argentina, available across Buenos Aires and the rest of the country as both fast-food fare and restaurant staples.

El Meson is celebrating these meat pies with a week-long festival at their restaurant from Wed, Oct 2nd through Saturday, Oct 5th from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Offering nine different empanadas served in platters of 3 for  $15.   The Empanadas are cut in half for six good size bites to share. You’ll be able to choose from chicken, vegetarian, bacon, birria beef, seafood and more. There are even gluten-free options made with corn shells. Owner Bill Castor suggests “compliment your platter by ordering a salad, bowl of soup and be sure to save room for dessert.”  This month El Meson is featuring a Tres Leches Cake – a Mexican style sponge cake soaked in 3 types of milk.

Take a Hike! 10 Places to See Amazing Fall Foliage

October 1, 2024 By Guest Contributor

Fall is arguably the prettiest time of year, with the leaves changing into an array of gorgeous colors. As we near the end of September, the fall foliage color extravaganza will soon reach its peak–there’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy the fall colors! We’re taking this opportunity to highlight nine locations around Dayton and Montgomery County where you can take in some breathtaking fall colors. So … take a hike! Go check out the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer.

1. Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm

Located in the northwestern part of Montgomery County, Aullwood consists of two major locations, Aullwood Nature Center and Aullwood Farm, along with eight miles of walking trails running through its 200-acre nature sanctuary. Be sure to take time to explore the trolls of artist Thomas Dambo at Aullwood Farm. Go to Aullwood’s website for information about hours and admission prices. While you’re at the Aullwood Nature Center, you’ll also want to pay a visit to the Aullwood Garden MetroPark.

2-4. Five Rivers MetroParks: Englewood MetroPark; Hills & Dales MetroPark; Cox Arboretum MetroPark

We’re cheating a little bit by giving three spots on our list to Five Rivers MetroParks … but, in all honesty, it could easily fill the entire list! The park system offers a wealth of natural riches throughout Montgomery County. The 18 parks have a plethora to offer; we’ve selected parks representing the northern, central and southern parts of the county.Englewood MetroPark: Situated just off U.S. 40 and Route 48, Englewood MetroPark offers roadways, trails and bike paths. The view of the waterfalls as leaves start to change color and drop is highly recommended, and be sure to also explore the Pumpkin Ash and Swamp Forest boardwalk.Hills & Dales MetroPark: Since it’s spooky season, we of course had to include Hills & Dales, home to the famous Lookout Tower (aka Frankenstein’s Castle, the Witch Tower, etc.). But the 1.5-mile Adirondack Trail is filled with warm fall colors that complement the Adirondack structures in the park.Cox Arboretum MetroPark: This southern Montgomery County gem offers a stunning view, via the 65-foot-tall Tree Tower. Climb the 81 steps to the top for sweeping views of the Miami Valley’s fall color.

You can check out more about fall colors in the MetroParks at their website.

5. Kettering Parks

The City of Kettering boasts a park system made up of 21 parks spread throughout the city, offering many opportunities to see the fall colors. Check out their website for more about celebrating fall in Kettering, as well as downloadable maps of the city’s many walking trails.

6. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

The grounds of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force feature some wonderful fall colors, as seen in this Facebook post by the museum a couple years ago. As an added bonus, the NMUSAF is easily one of the best free museums in the entire country – right here in Dayton! Make a day of it, wandering the outdoor grounds and exploring the museum’s vast collections.

7. Dayton’s Historic Neighborhoods

Don’t overlook the historic neighborhoods of Dayton for fall colors! In particular, the St. Anne’s Hill and Huffman Historic Districts along Fifth Street in east Dayton not only serve up beautiful fall foliage but also an impressive display of Victorian-era homes.

8. Carillon Historical Park

Carillon Historical Park is another gem among Dayton’s museums, a 65-acre history museum showcasing a vast range of Dayton’s heritage. The grounds also offer beautiful foliage this time of year. Be sure to check out the History on the Hill Interpretive Center and Moraine Trails, with its breathtaking bird’s eye view of the park and the city of Dayton. You can also take a trip around the park on the new Carillon Park Railroad! Go to the Dayton History website for hours and admission information.

9. Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum

Many consider the views of downtown Dayton from Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum to be some of the best in Dayton. Immerse yourself in the spectacular fall majesty of this location’s 3,000+ trees, spread out over 200 acres of rolling hills! The hills will give you the added bonus of a workout!

10. Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery offers some beautiful fall foliage as well. Take the whole family to enjoy the views and then spend a fun-filled day at this top family attraction!

These are just a few of the many places around the Dayton area to see spectacular fall foliage. This Dayton.com Fall Hiking Guide includes additional information about fall foliage. If you’re traveling outside the local area, this Ohio.org blog post highlights suggestions from around the state.

Southeast Metro Library Adjusts Hours

September 30, 2024 By Dayton937

Southeast Library

Beginning Tuesday, October 1, Dayton Metro Library will close the Southeast Branch, located at 21 Watervliet Avenue, Dayton, 45420, from 2:30 – 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

“Unfortunately, there has been an incredible increase in teen fighting at the Southeast Branch,” explained Jeffrey Trzeciak, Executive Director, Dayton Metro Library. “After much discussion and consideration, we have decided to adjust the hours for the month of October. This closure will allow us the time we need to work with Dayton Public Schools, Dayton Police Department, and our community partners to develop better strategies and policies for managing the influx of teens and behavior issues we see each day at that location.”

New hours of operation for the Southeast Branch are:

Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday:
9:30 am – 2:30 pm and 5 – 8:30 pm

Wednesday and Friday:
9:30 am – 2:30 pm and 5 – 6 pm

Saturday:
9:30 am – 6 pm

Sunday: Closed

“This was not a decision that was made lightly. As a public Library we always want to be open and available to our communities,” said Trzeciak. “However, we also have an obligation to provide a safe space. I am hopeful that this temporary change in hours will allow us the time we need to consider new approaches.”
