TheatreLab’s SMASH HIT ‘Lizzie’ is no AX-ident!!

October 27, 2024 By Joshua Stucky

Hurried…anxiety driven…and commanding, ‘Lizzie’ now playing at Mudlick Tavern’s Second Floor, has thrust TheatreLab back in the spotlight! DDN’s Russell Florence put it best…‘a wonderfully raw, vocally-impressive spooky season production…’ The show is directed by Mackensie King, and I had the pleasure of interviewing her about the show’s high praise!!

D9: Mackensie…you have a hit on your hands!! Why did you choose ‘Lizzie‘ in the first place??

MK: I have always loved horror and all things spooky. What drew me to this version of her story is how grounded and real it feels. The question I asked myself at the end of listening to it the first time was: is she GUILTY? Not did she do it, but are the things this woman went through about to justify what she did to escape them. Plus, the music for this show is unlike any other theatre show. It’s true rock/ metal and allows the cast to really show off their vocal chops.

D9: Timely, considering the Menendez Bros. story of late! There is one thing that audiences are 100% on…your cast! What can you tell me???

MK: The words “high octane” come to mind when I think about this cast. The vocals are absolutely top notch and SO full of power. Under all of that, there is true connection to the material. Sam Evans as Lizzie brings such understanding and sympathy to the character and she really makes you want for Lizzie to gain freedom. Allie Haines as Emma is so fun to watch because she is really finding how it feels to have to been the head of a family at such a young age. MJ Janovich is taking Alice in a direction I’ve never seen with youthfulness and hurt (and just wait until you hear her belt) and Leah Fox is HILARIOUS and terrifying as the banshee, Bridget.

D9: Strong ladies, indeed!! One thing I know TheatreLab is trying to do is incorporate more of a community feel in their productions! How did the whole Mudlick idea emerge?

MK: We really wanted to focus on bringing the arts TO Dayton. Unique venues really bring the audience in to the art and allow them to become participants. We have been neighbors with Mudlick for years and we wanted to partner with an incredible company. The show has a true rock show feel in the industrial space and Mudlick is curating specialty cocktails for the shows!

D9: I hear the cocktails have been a smash!! Such a great idea. I always say when people leave a show, they should be left with something…a thought, a feeling…..what are you hoping folks get out of Lizzie???

MK: I hope people walk away with 2 things.   1. That the talent in Dayton is worth investing in. The talent that you will see on that stage is worth keeping around. And 2: Women are angry and we have a voice and it’s about time you all listen.

D9: I, for one, hear you!!! I want to reiterate that this town is overflowing with talented folks!! Thanks for mentioning that! And thanks for being such an asset to Dayton’s theatre community Mackensie! So, what about this mysterious ‘Season’ TheatreLab is keeping close???

MK: Everyone is so excited. Keep Your Eyes Peeled….the announcement is coming soon!

You can catch ‘Lizzie’ on its remaining dates….

November 1 & 2 at 8:00pm. November 3 at 2:00pm.

Jimmy John’s Introduces Pickle Sandwiches

October 27, 2024 By Dayton937

Jimmy John’s revealed its latest menu item, the Picklewich, will be available nationwide from Oct. 28 through Nov. 14 in two variations stuffed inside a hollowed-out pickle.

The Vito Picklewich has salami, capocollo, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion and oil and vinegar (like Jimmy John’s classic Vito sandwich) to create an Italian sub experience in a pickle. The Turkey Picklewich layers some of the same toppings (lettuce, tomato and onion) with turkey and provolone.

Picklewiches with Pickle Jimmy Chips

To complement the Picklewich, Jimmy John’s is bringing back the fan-favorite Pickle Jimmy Chips. The salty, sour, dilly and delicious pickle flavor is added to classic Jimmy Chips that are made with real salt, 100% peanut oil, and thick sliced potatoes.

On National Sandwich Day, November 3, Jimmy John’s is offering Freaky Fast Reward Members 50% off the brand-new Picklewich when they purchase any 8-inch sandwich. Sign up to become a Freaky Fast Rewards member and start earning rewards and unlocking achievements at jimmyjohns.com/rewards.

Don’t worry if pickles aren’t your thing! Starting November 3, you can order your favorite 8-inch sandwich any time after 2 pm and make it a combo for free, which includes a bag of Jimmy Chips and a drink, throughout November and December.

Starbucks Gets Wicked with Movie-Inspired Drinks & Merch

October 24, 2024 By Dayton937

In a collaboration with Universal Pictures, Starbucks has released new drinks and merchandise to celebrate the upcoming release of “Wicked,” the book-turned-musical-turned-movie prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.”

With the movie premiere just a month away, Starbucks has added “Elphaba’s Cold Brew,” a peppermint cold brew topped with matcha cold foam and green sprinkles, and “Glinda’s Pink Potion,” a Mango Dragonfruit Refresher shaken with coconut milk and freeze-dried dragonfruit topped with non-dairy strawberry cold foam and pink sprinkles.

To further celebrate the release, Starbucks will add 16 new tumblers, cold cups, and mini cup keychains to their merch shelves on Nov. 7, inspired by the film’s main characters — the good witch Glinda and the wicked witch Elphaba — the City of Oz, and the pink and green color scheme. In addition, Starbucks will expand its “Discovery Series Collection,” which makes mugs featuring the names of prominent locations, to include Munchkinland, the Emerald City, and Shiz University, all fictional settings in the film.

Additionally, the coffee chain will have new Emerald City-inspired gift cards available for purchase in-store and through the app, with a special gold-colored mini card that doubles as a keychain with a minimum $50 load.

The movie is scheduled to come out Nov. 22 of this year, with “Wicked Part Two” scheduled to premiere Nov. 21, 2025.

Red Bird Pizza Soft Opening

October 15, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Red Bird Pizza Announces their soft opening on Tues, Oct 22nd at 4:30p and stay open until 8:30p (or til the dough runs out).

According to their Facebook post they “will have a 2 pie per order limit as we are only selling a limited number of pizzas for now.

We are still a very small team (night 1 will be a team of three). So we are starting off with a limited menu and shortened hours to allow us to focus on quality and training our team. We will expand the menu and hours as soon as we are able to do so without sacrificing quality.”

Miamisburg resident Christian Clothier grew up in New Jersey and has memories of enjoying pizza outings as a kid with his Grandmother.  Fast forward through  a career as a professional photographer, and his love of pizza, meeting of his neighbor Ife Olaore, who also shared that love and together the men are launching  Red Bird Pizza.

I had a chance to meet up with Christian this past weekend and got the tour of the new place.  Formerly a print shop, the newly remodeled restaurant has a small kitchen, a dough room equipped with equipment to purify the water they use for the dough, and a large walk in refrigerator where they will “age” the dough and keep their fresh ingredients.

Watching Christian make a pizza, stretching and tossing the dough, his joy of sharing this creative process just shined through as he described their process of locating the top quality ingredients and partnering with local farms to source produce.

Clothier describes their pies as “elevated NY style pizza with fresh ingredients.”  The menu will include pizza, salads, meatballs, calzones, killer chocolate cookies, banana muffins and bread pudding made with Bear Creek Donuts to start.  You’ll be able to order by the slice or by the 16″ pie.

If you’re wondering, the name Red Bird Pizza is in honor of Christian’s late grandmother Betty, who’s always dreamed of opening a bed and breakfast  named after her fascination or cardinals called Red Bird.  Combining the love and respect for his grandmother’s this pizza shop will be his homage to the love of family and he hopes to inspire a whole new generation of pizza lovers.

The Nation’s largest immersive art event, BLINK, lights up the Cincy Region for 4 days every other year. This engaging celebration of art and light is family friendly, free, and welcomes everyone to bask in its glow.

Check out this recap from 20222.

BLINK’s Director Justin Brookhart also hinted at a “first-of-its-kind” installation that will be making its debut this year. Brookhart described it as a “bridge of light” connecting the two sides of the river with an 100-foot-long array of laser lights stretching from Covington Landing to Sawyer Point on Cincinnati’s riverfront.

BLINK kicks off with an opening night parade at 7:30 pm Thursday, Oct. 17. This year’s theme is “Let it Shine.” The parade begins at 8 p.m. at West Mehring Way by Paycor Stadium and continues along the Riverfront to Barry Larkin Way at Great American Ballpark.

BLINK® spans 30+ city blocks from Findlay Market in Cincinnati to Covington and Newport in Northern Kentucky. Each map  outlines the neighborhood zones, providing an overview of the streets, alleys, buildings and landmarks set to be transformed from October 17th-20th. The BLINK experience is designed as a walking event and an opportunity for visitors to explore the city in a new light.

The full BLINK map with all 80+ installations, experiences hospitality and accessibility sites and can be viewed online.

Meet the Artists That Fuel Blink

With more than 80 murals, projections, light installations, stages and unique attractions spanning more than 30 city blocks, there’s plenty to see.

THE FINDLAY MARKET ZONE

The four-day festival will feature more than 80 installations divided into six “zones” including the Findlay Market Zone, Over-the-Rhine Zone, Downtown Zone, Banks Zone, Covington Zone and for the first time, the Newport Zone.

The Findlay Market Zone will feature 15 new permanent murals and a fan-favorite installation “String Theory” which combines hundreds of glowing strings tied together to create a colorful web.

THE OTR ZONE

A couple streets away is the Over-the-Rhine Zone which will once again light up the iconic Music Gall with projection-mapping displays presented by AVextended, Chaske Haverkos, Susan Kosti, and Lightborne.

THE DOWNTOWN ZONE

The downtown zone will cover Cincinnati’s business district, illuminating murals like the Cincinnatus and Toy Heritage mural.

Also returning is the Asianati Night Market.

THE BANKS ZONE

Down at The Banks zone, there will be a stage featuring musicians each day along with the return of BLINK Cincinnati’s nightly drone show at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. and a first-of-its-kind installation creating a multi-color bridge of light spanning the Ohio River.

THE COVINGTON AND NEWPORT ZONES

Across the river will be the Covington and Newport Zones where installations will light up Hotel Covington along with new sites including the Southgate/Thompson House and Newport on the Levee.

FoodieCards are a real playable deck of cards! Each card deals out $10 off your order at over 50 restaurants in the Miami Valley.  The decks sell for $30, so if you use just 3 cards you’ve earned your money back from purchasing the deck and have over $500 in savings still to earn. The decks are valid through Dec 31, 2025.

The Dayton decks have been around for five years. New to the deck this year are Hank’s Local, Latin Arepas and Manna Uptown.  Decks make great holiday gifts and non-profits can even sell them as a fundraiser, earning $10/deck sold.
