Footlong Subway Sidekicks Now On The Menu

January 22, 2024 By Dayton937

As Douglas Fry, President of Subway North America said, “The introduction of Sidekicks builds on six decades of equity and expertise in all things footlong. This whole new category on our menu offers Subway fans something they can’t get anywhere else and kicks off a year of culinary innovation and delicious new menu items. 2024 may be the most exciting chapter yet in our growth story.”

Subway Sidekicks include footlong cookie, churro, and pretzel

To take snacking to new lengths, Subway’s culinary team joined forces with Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s to create a craveworthy new twist on their classic snacks. Subway also spent a year perfecting the recipe for its Footlong Cookie to complete this irresistible new addition to Subway’s menu that’s big on size, taste and value:

  • A new Cinnabon Footlong Churro for $2, is baked to perfection, served warm and topped with Cinnabon’s world-famous Makara® cinnamon and sugar.
  • The Auntie Anne’s Footlong Pretzel for $3, reimagines Auntie Anne’s buttery and salty classic, served with a side of Subway’s Honey Mustard that takes each bite to another level.
  • The Footlong Cookie for $5*, is back nationwide and better than ever after popping up in select restaurants on National Cookie Day in 2022 and 2023 – it’s thick, gooey and packed with chocolate chips.

The Subway Sidekicks will join the menu on January 22.

Winter Restaurant Week Kicks Off Today

January 21, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

I started Restaurant Week in 2005 when I was president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association as a way to help our local eateries during the slowest month of the year. The promotion offered a 3 course meal for $20.05, playing off the year, with $1/meal going to a local charity.  At one point we had over 50 independent restaurants participating and over 10,000 meals served over the week.  2024 Restaurant Week kicks off tonight, Sun, Jan 21st and runs through next Sun, Jan 28th.

Our tips for making the most out of restaurant week:

*Check the days restaurants are open
*Make reservations when applicable
*Indulge in a great bottle of wine to compliment your meal
*Ask for the Restaurant Week menu if it’s not offered
*Know that menu’s may change based on product availability

Now almost 20 years and while the premise is the same, the costs have certainly changed.  This year three course meals are being offered at about 30 restaurants.  Several of them are still offering meals at $20.24, like Greek Street.  There you can enjoy a Mediterranean Platter -Choice of Chicken or Braised Lamb, Lemon Rice, Village Salad, 2 Keftedes, 2 Dolmades, Tzatziki and a piece of Baklava.  Condado Tacos at The Greene also has a $20.24 meal deal.  Nick’s in Xenia is offering a meal for two for $40.24. One dollar of each meal is donated to the Food Bank and the MVRA Education Foundation.

Coming in on the high end, Manna in Uptown Centervile has 2 of the higher priced offerings  at $60.24
for a Ponzu Salmon or Arrachera de Peru skirt steak. It’s sister restaurant Salar, in the Oregon District has a choice of Grilled Skirt Steak or Seared barramundi 3 course meal for $55.24.  The price range these 3 course meals for 2024 is $20.24-$60.24. Each meal donates $1, which will be split between The Food Bank and the

New Centerville Brunch Pub Menu Revealed

January 15, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Lorenzo Bas will open the doors to The Brunch Pub in uptown Centerville later this month, he’s just awaiting one more inspection before he announces the date. The building, which was built in the 1800’s served as the original Centerville High School has been under transformation for a couple of years.  Bas, a 2016 graduate of Centerville High explained that because the building is listed on the historical register, it was a more difficult renovation than he expected, having to redo the electric and plumbing, it’s taken two years to get it done.  After a tour last week I can tell you he’s done a terrific job on this building, that was most recently Las Piramides Mexican Restaurant.

Bas’s inspiration for the restaurant comes from the fact that he’s always hungry and he couldn’t find a brunch spot that offered what he wanted.  So having grown up in the restaurant business, he got his first job at a local pizza parlor folding pizza boxes as a young teen, spent an enormous amount of time watching cooking videos and eventually got to work on the line at that pizza joint.  His parents owned an eatery in Liberty Township, (they’ve since retired) it only natural for him to open his own place. He’s proud of the fact that all the breads, danishes, cookies, waffles and gelato’s will be made in house.

In chatting with Bas, his love of food and cooking comes through.  He’ll be the Chef with a kitchen crew of 10 to execute his farm to table comfort food as he describes his menu.   Bas has been inspired by his international travels, to recreate dishes he’s fallen in love with and is working with Liberty Farm Market to procure a lot of his herbs and vegetables. His plan is to offer a new menu twice a year.    Here’s a peek at the opening dinner menu:

The bar which has a dozen stools along the bar and some high top tables will feature classic cocktails, craft beers and soda’s by the can, because he thinks the canned beverages have the best taste. The wine list will hightlight  bottles from Argentina and Chile, Bas says “people think wines from France and Italy are the best,  but I want to focus wines I’ve tasted in South America, which are more affordable and just at tasty.”

The fireplace room offers a place to enjoy a magazine and a drink, according to Bas.  It’s corner banquette will be a great place for smaller groups and the other half of the room offers a semi-private area for larger groups.

5 Design Secrets at the Dayton Airport

January 12, 2024 By Guest Contributor

With all of the shiny, new things to explore thanks to the terminal modernization at the Dayton International Airport, you could accidentally miss some pretty interesting details. Here are some of the hidden, subtle, and surprising design elements you don’t want to miss next time you visit the airport.

1. Connect with the Sunshine

If you frequented the airport in the past, you likely don’t recall seeing windows near baggage claim. That’s because as the airport grew and needed space for rental car counters, a break room for airport staff, and the Military Welcome Center, the logical response was to place them where they would fit and be easy to locate for passengers. However, it meant blocking the light from the outside.

With the rental car counters moving to their own, dedicated building, and the Military Welcome Center moving to a larger space, the windows are once again visible, providing a sense of openness and connectivity with the outside world.

2. Look Down at Airplanes for a Change

You’ve probably noticed the brand-new terrazzo floors that glitter in the light and look brilliantly shiny and new, but did you notice the airplane designs across the expanse of the terminal floor? Not only are 20 airplanes designed into the floor that are significant to Dayton’s aviation history, but these airplanes are also life sized. Want to see how you stack up next to a B-17 Flying Fortress? Step on up and see for yourself! (Spoilers: It’s bigger than you.)

3. Check Outside for Hidden Design Elements

On the exterior of the terminal, the canopy is ready for lift off thanks to the sleek, slender wing-shaped materials that taper just like the wing of an airplane. This nod to aviation design is a beautiful way to celebrate flight (and the city where it was invented).

4. Look Up at the Structure

The columns are actually built at a slight angle, just enough to emulate the wheels of the airplane and the experience of standing under an airplane.

5. Sustain and Maintain

There are so many ways we are working to make the airport more sustainable and easier to maintain for airport staff. Here are a few:

  • The glass at the front is connected to sensors that turn off the lights if there’s enough natural light coming in.
  • Columns, walls, counters, and more are wrapped in stainless steel, which when dirtied throughout the day can simply be washed off. With typical drywall, the airport would need repainted every six months or so. Bonus detail: The use of stainless steel is also meant to represent the metal bodies of airplanes.
  • The terrazzo floor will last a long time and require only maintenance and cleaning for 50 years. Terrazzo should hold up for around 50 years, or around five or six carpet replacements.
  • The mechanical system (HVAC) can adjust and slow down when areas are empty.

The 3,500 people who go through the Dayton Airport daily will likely enjoy the more obvious improvements, luster, and renewed energy of the terminal thanks to the many improvements that have been made so far. Only a few will catch all of the surprising little details that have been incorporated into the design to create one fascinating celebration of flight – in the city where powered flight was made possible.
