November 11, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

“Waffle Shop” returns as a dine-in or carry-out event again this year, offered Tuesday – Friday of November 14 – 17 from 11am – 2pm.
Waffle Shop is a 90+ year tradition at Christ Episcopal Church
in downtown Dayton. They  raise funds through the sale of  waffle lunches, and then grant 100% of the proceeds to small local non-profits benefiting our brothers & sisters living on the margins in our community.
This beneficiaries for this year include: Hannah’s Treasure Chest– a nonprofit organization that enriches the lives of children in need by providing care packages of clothes, shoes, books, safety equipment and hygiene items including diapers through a network of 75 partners throughout southwest Ohio,  Stork’s Nest-a national program that rewards pregnant women with points for attending prenatal care appointments and classes,  Gem City Diaper Bank, whose mission is to promote the health & well-being of babies by providing diapers to low-income families at no cost in the Montgomery County, The Westwood Right Project– a community development organization, CityHeart – serves clients’ immediate needs while also connecting them to resources for long term solutions, CARE House – the children’s advocacy center for children and families affected by abuse in Montgomery County, and the  Ohio, Miami Valley Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. (OH 3), which supports our troops all over the world, our veterans, and each other.
Each year they enlist the help of  Celebrity Bakers. This year it’s  Mayor Mims, Lisa Wagner of Levitt Pavillion, Randy Phillips of DATV, and Alexis Larsen of Dayton Daily News.

Here’s a peek at the menu:

Not a waffle fan? Order a salad or sandwich:

Noodle Kugel, Cheese Blintzes and Beer Added to Deli Menu

November 7, 2023 By Dayton937

All The Best Deli is now serving daily specials, beer, and brownies for dessert!

Noodle Kugel

All The Best Deli, will add to their lineup of delectable sandwiches and deli classics. The restaurant is adding two new traditional special dishes to its menu – sweet noodle kugel and cheese blintzes.

The noodle kugel, a sweet and irresistible egg noodle casserole is from a traditional family recipe.  Kuel is a Jewish casserole that is traditionally served as a side dish and often served on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. $4.95.

The new cheese blintzes feature a rich, creamy, dairy-based filling wrapped in delicate crepes. They are available with either strawberry or blueberry sauce, or they are just as great plain. You can now also wash them all down with a rotating selection of local craft, imported, and domestic beer favorites.
Blintzes run from $4.95 – $6.25.

Another menu addition at All The Best Deli is now proudly offering chocolate brownies made by renowned Dorothy Lane Market. These brownies are the perfect indulgence to cap off your deli meal or to enjoy as a quick sweet treat.

Owner, Lee Schear, shares their enthusiasm for these enhancements, saying, “We are always seeking ways to incorporate our favorite traditional deli cuisines and elevate the guest experience at All The Best. We are excited to introduce beer and brownies to our menu as well as these two delightful new dishes.”

The current beer list includes Bud Light, Mich Ultra, Sam Adams, Stella Artois and Rhinegeist.

Fairborn’s newest restaurant, Uno Dos Tres Mexican Restaurant, just opened on Kaufman Avenue.  In the space that once housed Cadillac Jack’s and then Crossroads BBQ followed by Butts BBQ, and most recently Area A Field House. Owner Jose Guerrero, has a lot of restaurants in the Columbus area, but this is his first Dayton venture.

Serving up eight different fajita options, enchilada’s, quesadilla’s, soups and salads seven days a week for lunch and dinner here’s a peek at their menu.

There are also six salads options, a couple of soups, street tacos, ten seafood dishes and a good option for vegetarians on the menu.

Their Molcajete -served on the Traditional Stone Bowl looks like a fun starter to share.

It offers Steak, Shrimp, Chorizo, grilled onion, poblano pepper and mushrooms topped with avocado & cheese.

They also claim to serve the best margarita’s in town.  We haven’t tried them yet, but judging from this menu there are certainly a lot of options.

Centerville Bakery Closes

November 6, 2023 By Dayton937

Rachel Owen

Bakery owner Rachel Owens announced via Facebook that she will be closing her bakery that specialized in wedding and special occasion cakes.  She opened the business in  2015. After 5 years in Beavercreek, she moved to Cross Pointe Center in Centerville in April of 2022.

Here’s what she posted:
“It is with a heavy heart, tear-filled eyes but minor relief that we announce that we have closed our double blue doors, one last time.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to my community of supporters for the last 8 years! I have decided to take ahold of my mental health and put myself first. While it brought me immense joy to create for you and watch my employees be able to create and love what they do, I made the hardest decision of my life so far. Leaving this part of my life behind is very bittersweet. I have had my hands on cakes for 16 years!”
She continues with gratitude for her staff and a plea for
“My staff became family over the years and it breaks my heart to have to part with them. Every single one of them is honorable, kind, generous, and hard working. The talent that ran through rachelbakes was like none other!
We have partnered with another local bakery, the Cakery and highly recommended them to our cake family! A few of our decorators are going to be working for them here soon.
I have worked hard to do my best by my employees and my future prepaid customers. That being said, if you own or manage a local business and are hiring, I have a few employees still looking for that perfect fit! As for my customers, I used this weekend to reach out to those who had prepaid for orders. I had to leave messages for many. If you did not receive a call and feel as if you should have, please private message our business page!
Again, thank you for 8 years of allowing me to create edible art for you and your family. I will always hold this time close to my heart ♥️“
Customers shared their well wishes on her post:
Cassaundra Spaziani – “Thank you for all of the treats over the last few years. I used to only visit at Christmas but last week you helped me with an emergency order of cupcakes for my daughter. You will be missed. “
Shannon Hillard – “Those of us that own businesses understand this not as failure, but as the ultimate success to know what to prioritize. Best Wishes to you!”
Katie Easton – “So many good memories around your cakes! I know firsthand how hard it is to be a small business owner, especially in the current climate. It is all consuming and tests you in ways you could never prepare for. So proud of your bravery and openness in your mental health journey, and even more for your next steps into the unknown! Best of luck!”
Claire Linkhart – “Thank you for everything! You brought so much joy to my family through the beautiful art that is your cakes. You will be missed!”
Julia Soldi- “Your cakes were the best! Thank you for the memories. Now it’s time to take care of yourself.”

The Sugar Guild’s First Buffet in Their New Space

November 3, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef DD shared with us her excitement about her new space at Spark Fairborn.  She says being able to rent the community kitchen that is so well equipped is a huge advantage for her business. She’s spent the last year working out of The Red Carpet Tavern, which she says was a very valuable stop on her adventure and she’s grateful for the opportunity she had there.  But she’s thrilled to be able to move on by having a spot she can offer her full bakery menu, which folks can order from the menu and pick up.   She is working to set up Door Dash to make delivery a possibility.

She’s also excited to have a place to offer her buffet meals and her first one in the new space will be November 12th. She’ll offer 2 seatings of 50 people at 9am & 12pm and if they sell out she’ll add another. Pre sale price is $28/person with kids under 12 years old for $10. Call now and get your spot (740)908-1699

She plans to have 2 more buffet events in December, one breakfast/brunch the other a dinner menu. She’s thrilled she’s been able to keep all her staff and bring back a few others that have worked with her previously to staff these buffets.
Chef DD is now taking orders for thanksgiving desserts. We have pick up and delivery options for thanksgiving week. 30% deposit required with the order. You can pay with cash/Venmo/check. Deadline for holiday orders 11/17.

Misery Packs a Terrifying PUNCH!

November 2, 2023 By Joshua Stucky

Stephen’s King frightening tale of an obsessed fan, MISERY, comes to life this weekend at the PNC Arts Annex. TheatreLab‘s deep dive into the novel looks eerie, and excellent. I was lucky enough to catch up with the show’s director, Allie Haines. She gave me the lowdown, on this blood-curdling ride through the mind of a psychopath….the notorious Annie Wilkes.

JS: Hi Allie….so good to see you. So, tell me this, Why Misery??

AH: Hi Josh…yes, TheatreLab has a history of success presenting shows around the Halloween season and we’ve been wanting to introduce plays into our offerings, so Misery felt like a no brainer. The story feels timeless and relevant with its issues of fame, obsession, and addiction and we wanted to give the audience an immersive, voyeuristic view inside of this nightmare.

JS: It’s a story so many know…and love, especially the film. Are there parallels?

AH: Quite similar, actually! You can expect the same thrilling ride, with our own compelling twists and turns throughout. Complete with sledgehammer!

JS: Yay, the sledgehammer. (For those of you unfamiliar, you will appreciate the loyalty to the story King wrote. Let’s juist say, some of the props are stars as well.) Thinking in terms of stars, there is a lot of talk about this cast. What can you share with us?

AH: These actors. Phew!!! Every night they surprise us, make us laugh, gasp in horror and send chills down our spines. Naman Clark plays a suave and confident Sheriff Buster, Kaleb Smith enters the chat as the sarcastic and endearing famous author Paul Sheldon, and Adelyn Helms embodies our Annie Wilkes with a mastery that’s at once both enchanting and terrifying. They are a truly phenomenal cast that must be seen to be believed, bringing these classic characters to life – for a new generation of Misery devotees.

JS: I’m a devotee. I think about some of those scenes, and find myself rooting for Annie….sick as that is! It’s just got so much energy in the show…all over the place energy. I know people are dying to get tickets….what are the dates/times?

AH: 4. One weekend only! November 2-4th. Link for tickets is right here: https://www.daytonlive.org/events/misery/

JS: There are also rumors about TheatreLab using their own space for upcoming performances. The previews for Misery were a hit….from the sinister elevator ride, to the immersive performances. Whats the story with all of that?

AH:5. Our rehearsal space on Jefferson St really lends itself to performance and experiential opportunities and opening up our final rehearsals of Misery to the public and transforming our space into a version of the show felt like the beginnings of a new direction for TLD. Up next, [title of show] will be playing in our space and our wheels are already turning with ideas for more intimate, immersive, and one of a kind theatrical experiences.

JS: YAY! Smart! Ok, so, with all the word on theaters around the country facing tough times….how can Dayton get involved in TLD. Are there opportunities to support beyond tickets?

AH: We believe live theater and telling these stories on stage cultivates empathy, connection and hope in our beautiful, yet fractured world. Art is essential. We need your support to continue this crucial work, to compensate local artists and spark deep conversations about the human experience. You can get involved in so many ways! Visit our website and contact us if you’d like to volunteer or donate (we accept Venmo, PayPal, and good ol fashioned checks and cash!). You truly are our best advocates! If you come to our show and enjoyed it – spread the word online and to your friends! You make a huge difference in allowing The Lab to continue to INVOLVE, INNOVATE and INSPIRE! Thank you!

JS: Ummmmm…..that was like a practiced speech Alle….but I get it. Best of luck with Misery, and for the season itself. And thank you!

AH: See you at the show….Thanks Josh.

Local Pizzeria Wins $15,000 For Their Community Service

October 31, 2023 By Dayton937

Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory, a beloved inner-city Dayton, OH pizzeria serving the local community for over 30 years, has been honored with a $15,000 national grand prize sponsorship in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the Dayton community. The award was granted as part of the 2nd Annual Great Pizza Give Back program sponsored by Hillshire Farm® Brand. The program invites local neighborhood pizzerias to share their stories about their community involvement for a chance to win one of 11 sponsorships – one for $15,000 and ten for $2,000. This sponsorship funding enables pizzerias to continue impacting and improving their local communities.

“This year, the Great Pizza Give Back generated so many amazing entries that it was difficult to select the winners, but we landed on several excellent choices,” shared (Bruce Engelmann, Director of Foodservice Category Marketing, Hillshire Farm® Brand). “Each entry featured an inspiring story of commitment for enriching their community and a passion for making a real difference.”

For more than three decades, Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory has been a steadfast supporter of their community, engaging in a wide range of philanthropic initiatives. These efforts include sponsoring little league and youth sports teams, offering half-price pizzas to local teachers, and regularly donating pizzas to Daybreak, a local shelter for runaways, Friends of Addicts, an organization for friends and family of recovering addicts, and locally organized efforts for violence prevention programs.

Their dedication to supporting first responders and fostering neighborhood connections through events and promotions like their “Family/Neighbor Pizza Night” has been unwavering for over three decades.  (Buy one, get one for any  14″, or 16″ PIZZA
Mondays only. Carry out only.)
In addition to their generous contributions, Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory has been a model of sustainability, having installed solar panels to meet part of their energy needs and volunteering to educate others on solar energy adoption.

Furthermore, the pizzeria’s commitment to education extends to local high school students, as they have been providing pizzas for after-school sales, enabling students to raise funds for their annual prom. Their involvement in neighborhood clean-ups and holiday spirit through pizza gift certificates for decorated homes during the festive season demonstrates their dedication to fostering community unity.

“We are incredibly excited to have won,” said Bill Daniels, Owner of Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory. “Our mission has always been to serve not only delicious pizza but also to make a positive impact on the neighborhoods we serve in Dayton. This recognition validates and further enables our ongoing commitment to community support.”

The $15,000 grand prize will be put to good use as Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory plans to continue and increase its current contributions. They have already used some of the sponsorship award to establish a “Doughlarship” program to provide scholarships at Sinclair Community College to local high school students, and they plan to expand their partnership with local food banks and churches to provide pizza and food for the homeless, and further enhance their support for the Daybreak runaway shelter. Daniels intends to collaborate with local neighborhood development agencies to further support efforts to get people together to work toward bettering their community.

In addition to Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory, there were 10 runner-up winners in the 2nd Annual Great Pizza Give Back program, each receiving $2,000 in recognition of their outstanding community service efforts.
