“Dayton, Ohio cow-punk band Viceroy Kings return with their country-tinged punk sound. Musically, they fall somewhere between Social Distortion and Two Cow Garage. Punk informed by the vibe of outlaw country. High energy numbers benefit from the addition of piano. Vocals bring to mind early Hot Water Music, Lars Frederickson, or Tom Waits after a couple lozenges. Rough around the edges working class punk.”

Quest for $10 Lunch Downtown
Affordable housing. That’s the supposed guarantee that redevelopment doesn’t become gentrification. It’s a promise that there will be affordable housing so normal people can live in or near the newly redeveloped hip spaces that cost more than the suburbs.
I want that for food.
Affordable dining. With the introduction of “nicer” dining in downtown, Jollity, the Biscuit place, Sueno, and others, the hunt for a good lunch under $10 downtown are becoming scarce. Even that little Chinese buffet is almost $10 now for what is a less than stellar lunch buffet.
So, in good faith, here is my list of best lunches downtown for under $10.
Carmen’s Deli (Stratocache Tower)
Carmen’s Deli Falafael Gyro for $7.95. I eat this at least once a month. No sides are necessary. With all the fresh veggies on top of that pita and crumbled Falafel, you can skip the chips or salad.
Benjamin’s The Burger Master (North Main)
Beans and Cornbread with a wing or two at Benjamin’s Burger Master. If southern/soul food isn’t your thing, you can score a burger and fries well south of $10 there. It’s on Main street and delightful every time.
Blind Bob’s (Oregon District)
Blind Bobs for a BLT and chips. Again, no-frills, just a great sandwich for a great price. When it’s colder I go for the Grilled Cheese with a cup of chili (or the pickle soup). You are still out the door for under $10.
Taqueria Garcia Mobil
7 Huffman Ave, Dayton, OH 45403 (937) 554-8196 (calling ahead speeds things up)
Tacos are $2.50 each now, but three will fill you up, leaving room for a can of cola and you’ve just had the best tacos for under $9.00. I like the chicken and chorizo mix or I get the steak. Get the street taco with cilantro and onion, skip the cheddar, lettuce, and sour cream. This ain’t Taco Bell.
Falb’s Restaurant (Over by Children’s Hospital)
If you have a minute for a short drive out of the business district, and you want a burger, or breaded pork tenderloin, with onion rings and a Coke for less than $8, get to Falb’s. Eat like a king for under $10 there. Check their daily specials.
Canal Street Arcade and Deli
My final go-to when I can’t break the bank is the Club sandwich, half size, at Canal Street Deli. Grab a bag of chips and lunch is completed for about $9.00. My bar tab usually ruins this. A beer while you wait, a beer with lunch, cancel your one o’clock, and get another beer while you play a quick round of Golden Tee while heading to the door. Allegedly.
Where are you finding a bargain for lunch? Let us know in the comments.

Wood Carving Workshop
Professional wood carver, Jim Foster is hosting a wood carving workshop from Thursday, August 12 through Saturday, August 14, 2021. The workshop will be held in his studio, the Matador Hair Studio in Piqua, Ohio, and will be from 9 am to 4 pm daily.
Jim Foster, owner of the Matador Hair Studio in Piqua, Ohio, is a wood carver of many years. Jim also teaches wood carving classes, and has been doing so for 13 years. Over the past 7 years, he has been forming three dimensional pieces that many people enjoy recreating. Jim loves showing people how to make a piece of wood come alive.
In his youth, Jim was very interested in drawing, and did a lot of it to pass the time. He then graduated high school, went off to Barber College, and worked for three months’ time. Next, Jim served in the army for three years, married his girlfriend at the time with whom he had three great children. From then on, he stayed in the Barber business, as well as occasionally helping his brother-in-law build houses on his days off.
When Jim was about 50 years old he got together with his best friend, who taught him a little bit about carving. The art interested Jim, and once he started to carve, he loved it, and began developing a great skill for it. One day, he adventured to Branson, MO, and found himself carving there for a week. Though he was nervous, he became impressed with his own skill. In Branson, he was introduced to carving with rough outs, which then made it a lot easier for him.
After 6 years of practice with different types of carvings for others, Jim began to design his own pieces for others to carve. Since then, he has made many rough outs of various shapes and sizes. Jim continues to practice wood carving in his studio at the Matador in Piqua, Ohio, where he hosts a weekly wood carving class every Wednesday night. There, nearly every day is filled with a wood carving adventure.
Jim’s Wood Carving Workshop will cost $200 per person or $255 with supplies included. Please note: the workshop will hold a maximum of 15 participants. Register online at www.PiquaArtsCouncil.org/workshops. Please make sure to pay your deposit in order to reserve your spot in the workshop.

50th Anniversary Oktoberfest A Go For DAI!
The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) announced today that its popular fall festival and fundraiser, Oktoberfest, will return to the museum grounds in 2021, taking place September 24–26. The annual Dayton tradition celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
“It was such a difficult decision last year to cancel Oktoberfest for the first time in the festival’s history,” said DAI Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Going into the spring of this year, we were hopeful that Oktoberfest could return for its 50th anniversary, and today we are excited to announce that a full, three-day Oktoberfest celebration will take place on the museum grounds. As the DAI’s largest annual fundraiser, it will play a vital role in supporting museum operations as we emerge from the pandemic.”
Plans for Oktoberfest include the return of the Lederhosen Lunch and Preview Party on Friday, September 24, followed by Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 25, noon–11:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 26, noon–7 p.m.
“We look forward to welcoming the community back to the museum and grounds this fall, as we celebrate the festival’s long history,” said DAI Associate Board members and 2021 Oktoberfest Chairs, Liz Wolfe-Eberly and Peter Eberly. “It’s an honor to serve as the festival chairs and help plan for Oktoberfest’s 50thanniversary!”
In conjunction with today’s announcement, the Dayton Art Institute is also launching its annual call for volunteers to assist with the festival. Oktoberfest wouldn’t be possible without the support of more than 2,000 volunteers each year. Many different volunteer opportunities will be available at Oktoberfest 2021, including selling Oktoberfest mugs and t-shirts, selling soft drinks and water, staffing admission gates, serving as greeters in the museum, and assisting with family activities at the FamilyFest. Those interested in volunteering must register through the Oktoberfest page on the Dayton Art Institute’s website, at www.daytonartinstitute.org/oktoberfest.
The Oktoberfest page will also serve at the central hub for all information and updates relating to Oktoberfest. More information about this year’s festival will be posted there in the coming weeks. Advance tickets for the Preview Party and Oktoberfest will go on sale in mid-August.
Otoberfest was established by the DAI Associate Board in 1971, with the first full public festival taking place in 1972. Each year, the Associate Board helps organize Oktoberfest as a fundraiser to support the museum. This group of 64 dedicated museum volunteers also organizes the annual Art Ball gala. Over the years, the Associate Board has raised nearly $7.5 million for the museum through Oktoberfest. Since its inception, more than one million people have attended the DAI’s Oktoberfest!
WDPR Collecting Musical Instruments
Do you have a used musical instrument you no longer need? You can make it sing again in the hands of a young musician. It’s time once again for It’s Instrumental, a musical instrument drive that benefits aspiring young musicians in the Dayton region. One of the best things we can do is inspire that next generation of music lovers,” said Shaun Yu, the president and CEO of Dayton Public Radio. “The best way to deepen that love of music is to actually make it.”
During the past few years, hundreds of instruments have been collected for students in area schools, and for musicians in the Q the Music program. Q the Music is a daily after-school string orchestra program that supports the musical, academic and social growth of at-promise youth in the Dayton community. Located at Ruskin Elementary, students in grades 3 through 6 receive academic tutoring; take group lessons in violin, viola and cello; and participate in string orchestra rehearsals.
All kinds of instruments are accepted, even those in need of repair, as well as accessories like carrying cases and bows. You can even get a receipt for tax purposes.
DONATE NOW UNTIL JULY 31
