Oregon District’s Hauntfest Cancelled

September 30, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Out of concern for the health and safety of our guests and employees and local community, and with a deep appreciation for the financial soundness of our bars, restaurants, retails, and service businesses, the Oregon District Business Association will not be holding Hauntfest in any capacity this year.

Out on 5th, the pedestrian mall created from the closure of 5th Street to vehicular traffic, will still be in place on October 31 to encourage safe practices related to COVID-19. We request strict adherence to social distancing and mask-wearing, every day and especially on celebratory holidays like Halloween.

DORA (designated outdoor refreshment area) will not be in effect per the City ordinance, therefore, there will be NO open containers permitted within the DORA boundary permitted on Oct. 31 and open container fines will be in effect.

We are disappointed that we must make this decision and announcement cancelling an event that has such a rich history and dedicated following. We must, however, focus on keeping our communities safe and as an organization, we must be mindful to not offer any services that compete with the permanent brick and mortar establishments in the Oregon District.

Heart Mercantile: A snarky shop filled with clothing, home goods, local/handmade, Dayton-centric gifts, jewelry, and much more.

The Trolley Stop building was constructed in 1839 and is the oldest continuously operating tavern in Dayton.  This location originally housed a residence, a meat and provisions store, a tavern, a shoe-shine shop, a barbershop and several sleeping room

Ned Pepper’s, named after notorious outlaw and one of the main antagonists of True Grit ,was opened in 1994.

Oregon District Pilots Pedestrian Friendly Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA)

August 26, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Oregon District Business Association (ODBA) announced Out on 5th, a new program to support expanded outdoor seating and offer more opportunities for social distancing. Beginning Labor Day weekend on Friday, Sept. 4, Fifth Street will close to vehicular traffic between Patterson Boulevard and Wayne Avenue. “Businesses are only able to operate at half capacity as a result of coronavirus precautions, but creating a pedestrian mall along Fifth Street will increase service for bars, restaurants, and even retailers,” said Emily Mendenhall, owner of Lily’s and ODBA board member.

The weekend closures will feature acoustic music and other entertainment, special sales events, and amenities to elevate the guest experience. Out on 5th will continue every weekend through the end of October during this pilot phase. The pedestrian promenade will begin around 5 pm Friday and continue through 10 pm Sunday.

Expanding outdoor dining is one of many objectives that comprise local small business relief efforts. “Carry-out orders help, but the reality is these local businesses aren’t able to serve as many customers in order to comply with the latest health and safety guidelines,” said Downtown Dayton Partnership President Sandra Gudorf. “Having extra outdoor dining options gives patrons more opportunities to support our small businesses, and the street closures allow our local retailers to pop out onto the sidewalks with ample space to browse while remaining socially distant.”

Along with the street closures, the Oregon District will be able to safely enact the new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), which allows patrons to purchase an alcoholic beverage served in a branded cup and relax outdoors in the pedestrian mall. Guests can choose to dine at their favorite Fifth Street businesses and receive table service at specially marked tables, or enjoy a beverage in the DORA cup at one of the public tables offered throughout the street. Guests must finish their DORA beverage and dispose of the cup before entering a new pub or restaurant, or they can sip while they shop at participating retail businesses that allow DORA cups. “Look for the sticker on the door,” said Kyle Babriad, owner of Canary Consulting and president of the ODBA. “Every business will be very clearly marked with signage indicating whether you can take your DORA cup inside (if it’s a retailer) or whether DORA beverages are sold there (if it is a bar or restaurant).”

During Out on 5th, ODBA businesses will continue their rigorous standards of cleaning facilities indoors as well as their expanded outdoor seating. Hand sanitizer stations will be positioned throughout the District, and guests are reminded to use masks while indoors and outside when a six-foot social distance cannot be maintained. “We understand these are unprecedented times for Dayton’s small businesses,” said City of Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. “The City of Dayton supports efforts like Out on 5th that create additional revenue opportunities while maintaining public safety standards.”

To kick off the weekend of street closures and the new DORA, the ODBA will participate in the Downtown Sidewalk Sale event starting on First Friday, Sept. 4, and extending into Saturday, Sept. 5. Shops and restaurants across downtown Dayton will create an on-street presence with display racks and trunk sales. Guest artisan merchants from around the Miami Valley will complement the atmosphere. Live entertainment and local artwork will punctuate the experience. More information can be found at DowntownDayton.org. “Now more than ever, our small businesses need the support of the community,” Gudorf said. “The DDP is proud to support our small businesses with programming like First Friday, the Downtown Sidewalk Sale, and more upcoming events. There will also be musicians and roving entertainment in the District on weekends to enhance the experience guests have while they’re Out on 5th.”

“The ODBA hopes this initiative will encourage patrons to come back to support their favorite businesses,” Babriad said. “Initiatives like Out on 5th and amenities like our new, free, public WiFi make the Oregon District an attractive place to gather with family and friends, and also a great spot for a productive off-site work lunch.”

Additionally, “If you’re coming downtown, remember there are almost 300 free parking spaces on the street along Wayne Avenue, Bainbridge, Walnut, Jones, and Fourth streets, or in the Greater Dayton Premier Management lot after 5 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, thanks to the ODBA parking lot grant,” Babriad said. “There are also thousands of parking spaces in paid lots at either end of Fifth Street — the Oregon District garage near the Convention Center is just $1 after 6 p.m.” Designated spots for carry-out, delivery, rideshare pick-up, and valet parking are still being selected. Watch TheOregonDistrict.org for more information.

Other transportation options include using the Link Dayton Bike Share system or the SPIN e-scooters. Riding through Fifth Street is prohibited during times the streets are closed. Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority’s free Flyer bus makes a stop near the Oregon District garage and the Convention Center across the street, making it another convenient transit option for those traveling to and from the District between RiverScape MetroPark and the University of Dayton.

After Sept. 4, the DORA will go into full effect, allowing patrons to leave bars or restaurants with their beverage in a designated DORA cup from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Patrons within the DORA must stay on the sidewalks when Fifth Street is open to vehicular traffic, and patrons must always stay within the boundaries of the DORA (indicated in the attached map).

Out on 5th is a partner program with the ODBA, the DDP, and the City of Dayton. To learn more about Out on 5th, visit TheOregonDistrict.org.

DORA “Do”s:

  • DO drink beverages in the official DORA cup, which can be purchased at participating bars and restaurants. (Look for the sticker indicating “DORA drinks sold here.”)
  • DO stay within the boundaries of the DORA. Signs will be posted around the perimeter, and a map can be found online.
  • DO bring your DORA beverage into retailers where the sticker on the entrance indicates it is OK to do so.
  • DO remove your trash from public tables or other public outdoor seating areas and place them in the marked receptacles around the area. This will help servers and other workers clean the tables faster for the next guest to enjoy.
  • Do tip your servers and bartenders — they depend on it for their livelihoods!

DORA “Don’t”s:

  • DON’T bring your DORA cup into a bar or restaurant. Finish your beverage and dispose of your cup in the designated receptacles.
  • DON’T take your DORA beverage outside the designated boundaries.
  • DON’T drink your beverage in a street that is open to vehicular traffic.
  • DON’T bring your DORA cup into a retailer with a sign on the entrance that says they do not allow DORA cups in their establishment.
  • DON’T leave your trash on the tables, on the street, or other places that are not trash cans. We want this to be an enjoyable experience for the customers and small businesses!

Tree of Life Memorial on Display in Oregon District

August 4, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Today on display in the Oregon District you will see nine paintings done by local artists.  These trees of life represent the nine lives lost in the horrific shooting on April 4th, 2019 that happened on Fifth Street.

Their was a committee formed to help create a memorial to remember those who loft their lives. Committee member Mark DaGrossa, who actually created the Dayton Shines logo,  says, “we talked about many ideas, but a tree seemed to emerge as a symbol we could all agree upon.  So I reached out to local artist Julie Riley to see if she’d be interested.”   Julie shared that the idea was to create trees  so people could write notes of remembrance and tack them on the trees.

Riley then recruited Richard Lundin, Property Manager of Front Street for help with Mark’s idea and he came up with the idea of 9 artists each painting one tree. Digital Fringe printed a plain tree on 46”x46” boards and each artist painted their tree as a memorial to the victims.  Julie says, “it was really cool because none of us saw what the other artists painted until the installation was up this morning. Richard then built the frames for the installation you see in the OD and then mounted the paintings. It’s already been visited a lot this morning and people are placing notes on the trees to the victims. It was very emotional for each of us who painted the trees, thinking of those who lost their life and those who were injured. The trees will be there for a month and then moved to Front Street’s sculpture park.”

Visitors are welcome to visit the installment today and pin a note, a memory, or message of hope to the installment. The Crisis Response team will be on site until 6PM to offer materials and support for those in need.

The nine artists that created these trees are: Julie Riley, Mikee Huber, Jo Ann Vincent, Hyacinth Paul, Lori Daugherty, Rusty Harden, Samantha Mang, Bonnie Kuntz and Sunny Simms.

Julie Riley’s Tree:

“Although it was a huge honor to paint the tree, it was a somber and emotional time. The nine doves and nine leaves represent the 9 who lost their lives, it broke my heart each time I painted a dove and especially when I wrote their name by each dove. I prayed for each family as I was writing the victim’s name. The yellow hearts at the bottom of the tree represent those who were injured and that was difficult too. I did not personally know anyone who lost their life or those injured but because of the news and social media, I was able to put a face to many of the victims. If you look close at the painting, you can see where my tears disturbed some of the paint.”

Mikee Huber’s Tree:

” It was emotional and overwhelming at times, so I’d like to share with you what this tree of life means to me. I chose nine colors for the leaves, one color per deceased. The bright colors represent the light they had in them and the joy they brought to others. Some colors have interference (color shifting) paint, and some have glitter paint but its subtle.I choose a galvanized steel appearance for the tree to represent the strength and resilience of Dayton, and to the victims who held on as long as they could.”

“The entire tree and leaves have a layer of Phosphorescent paint to represent even though they are gone, they are still with us. The Phosphorescent paint is also for Dayton Shines. The blue heart is love from Dayton to everyone who was there that night, and to those who lost a loved one. The initials represent they are forever with Dayton, we can never forget them, and we never will.”

Rusty Harden’s Tree:

“Its been an intense process and the finished piece with the other 8 belong to the community.”

Hyacinth Paul’s Tree:

Samantha Mang’s Tree
“I’m honored to be creating on a piece of a larger collaborative piece, with some great artists and amazing people! “
Jo Ann Vincent’s Tree:

Lori Daugherty’s tree:

My heart still hurts💔. Aug 4th, 2019 was a day that will always be a part of me.
A day I would have never imagined in my worst of nightmares.
A day that Dayton cried together.
A day that Dayton became stronger together.

Nine wonderful lives were lost that morning, thirty-nine more were injured, and countless lives were forever changed.

I am honored to have played a tiny part in creating the one year memorial for the anniversary of the Oregon District Shooting.

For the Love of Beer and Community – An Interview with Mike Schwartz

July 22, 2020 By Brian Petro 2 Comments

Update: Mike has sold Belmont Party Supply and posted this photo and message on his  Facebook page:

“Thanks for the Memories!

May the Schwartz Beer Be With You Always”

Please enjoy this repost of this interview with Mike from 2013.

Belmont Party Supply Logo

Belmont Party Supply: the epicenter of great beer knowledge in Dayton.

The craft beer business has been booming for the last two decades. Since the late 1980’s, craft beer has been slowly nibbling at the edges of the big name beers that people knew well and enjoyed. Sam Adams led the charge at a time when there were roughly 90 breweries in the United States. That number has grown to over 2,500 in 2013, and it looks like there is no slowing down. Dayton has multiple breweries and brew pubs opening in the area, adding to the seventy that already dot the state of Ohio. As this beer explosion was happening, there was a business that was quietly growing with it. Belmont Party Supply, owned by community supporter and beer advocate Mike Schwartz, will be celebrating 30 years of business next year. They also have been named by several websites and magazines as one of the best beer stores in the world. While beer lovers see Mike as a cornerstone of the Dayton beer scene, it was something that may not have come to pass if events played out differently.

“I actually quit drinking beer, because I am not a fan of carbonation, and I don’t like cold beer,” Schwartz said, sipping a Bell’s Expedition Stout at the Trolley Stop. “I didn’t know anything about drinking a warm beer like English ale. I was so slow at drinking my beer it would turn warm, and obviously we all know what an American major tastes like when it turns warm.” He quit drinking beer around the same time he bought the Belmont Party Supply in January of 1984. It was two years before the craft beer movement was even truly born, and he bought Belmont as it was going out of business. Mike had been sidelined by illness from his day job as an electrician, ultimately bought the failing shop for one reason. “I was bored!”

The explosion of craft beer in the late 1980’s helped his business, and his knowledge of beer, grow. That growth eventually led to some problems in the middle of the 1990’s. “They were putting a lot of crap on the shelves. Very expensive crap. I started to see breweries putting money on their labels and not in their beers. The consumers stood strong. I had to react by tasting beers before I put them on the shelf. At one time I had distributors bringing me beers to evaluate before they carried them. It was that bad.” Mike developed a reputation in the area as the guy that knew beer. “I used to have my beer manager collect the samples. She would sit down and pour the beer on Friday afternoon. Then she would tell me what to evaluate it as. I would evaluate it. She would not tell me the price. I would evaluate it by how much money I thought they put into it and how it fed into the style.” He had good taste even then. He was selling North Coast and Avery beers before they were widely popular.

Mike Schwartz with pink hair

Isn’t he a good sport? And pretty in pink?

He gained some of his vast knowledge of beer the same way most of us do: trial and error, tasting many different beers, and learning about their flavors through experience. He also went the extra step and became certified. “First of all I took the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). If you are a brewer, that will teach you how to brew. It will teach you all the physics, the science behind all the beers. What they are supposed to be, how they are supposed to taste, and what makes them taste that way. Yes, you have certain ingredients, but it’s how your treat that certain ingredient to get the flavor you want.” There is another program, the Cicerone program, which is for beer handlers. Mike suggests that if you are a beer lover, either of those programs would be beneficial for your knowledge of beer. He also networked to learn more behind the scenes information about the beers and the programs he loves. He has met such beer luminaries as Gordon Strong, one of the creators of the BJCP and a master brewer in his own right; Randy Mosher, 27 year veteran of home brewing, author, and part owner of Five Rabbit Brewery in Chicago; and Fred Karm, brewer at the increasingly popular Hopppin’ Frog brewery in Akron, OH. Some of the luminaries in the beer world he had the pleasure to interview, and those interviews are posted on the Belmont Party Supply’s website for all of our benefit. Mike’s reputation grew as his business grew, and soon he was not just known through the state or the region, but the world.

For those of you not in know, Belmont Party Supply is known well beyond the confines of Dayton. Mike spoke about one of the incidents that illustrated how widely known this local beer store is. “My wife went out to San Diego last year for a family wedding and people that grew up next door to us flew in as well. They had just come back from Belgium. They were doing a brewery tour, and they asked they tour guide if they ship to the United States. The tour guide asked ‘Where are you?’, and our friends said in Ohio, right by Dayton. He responded by saying ‘Do you know Mike Schwartz over at Belmont Party Supply? He carries our beer. That to me is an impressive thing.” BeerAdvocate has rated it as one of the best in the country, and RateBeer has it ranked as one of the top beer places in the world. After being in the business for thirty years, Mike knows what it takes to create a successful business. “I did not do that all alone. I am the guy at the top but it took great people working for me, and the customers that requested beers. We worked hard with the distributors. I could not have done it without the distributors. We carry some of their slow moving items, and when we do that, they feel the need to pay us back.” And pay him back they have. One of the beers he was paid back with was the ultra rare and highly desired Westvleteren 12. “It came in through Shelton Brothers Importing, through a distributor of course. We carry all of Shelton Brothers beers, and they have showed us appreciation by giving us some one offs.” It is smart business practices like this that allow Belmont to carry beers no one else has, and end up with beers that everyone will want.

Brewtensils interior

This is utopia for beer brewers in the Dayton community.

Mike Schwartz’s beer expertise is not just in tasting in and selling it, but brewing it as well. Brewtensils started as shop within Belmont Party Supply, helping local brewers make their own beers at home. It eventually grew into its own shop right next door, offering not only brewing supplies but brewing classes and contests as well. His favorite style to brew is imperial stouts. “It is very English, it tastes better the warmer it gets. I have had bartenders pour me a glass and put it in the microwave for ten to fifteen seconds to knock that chill off.” The classes not only give Mr. Schwartz a chance to help local brewers pursue their craft, they also give him a little insight into what brewers are starting to explore. Many big beer trends start in kitchens of amateur brewers, so this becomes a little lab for him to observe. What is he seeing on the horizon? “I really think you are going to see more herbs going into beers. People are more conscious of nature. Some of the people herbs are using for flavor and bitterness are phenomenal. Your saisons are increasing now. You can play all kinds of games with saisons with herbs, ginger, lemongrass, all kinds of stuff. I see that coming around the corner, I really do.”

Beer brewing classes and tastings around town are just a few ways Mike stays in touch with the community. And he is a big supporter of this community. He is part of the brain trust that is bringing Big Beers and Barley Wines back for its fifth year at the Roundhouse on October 5.  For the connoisseurs of craft beer and looking for more local flavor, this is one of the last big beer festivals of the year. The list of beers for this year’s festival is impressive. Revolution Brewing’s Very Mad Cow stout is almost worth the price of admission on its own. Mike has other reasons other than supporting local breweries and beer lovers. “This organization (the Resident Home Association) came to me and asked me to do a beer tasting for them. I said ‘No, I want to do a festival. I want to do a knockout festival.’ I told them they would have to handle all the money, but I will not accept any users or advisors fees. No one will make a penny off of this. This is the fifth one, and now we’re typically putting in $8000 to $10,000 a year in profit.” He gives back quite a bit to the community that supports him, not just locally, but nationally. He has done charity work for others as well, like our veterans. “Probably the neatest thing I have ever done in this trade was helping my sister down in Columbia, SC, home of Ft. Jackson. She belonged to an Elks Club, and she asked me to come down and do a beer tasting for the Wounded Warrior Walk. It is the hospice for wounded warriors. We raised quite a bit of money. I got to meet some high ranking officials down there. One high ranking officer invited me out to the firing range to fire some of the big guns. I wasn’t able to go because I was flying out the next day.”

Big Beers and Barley Wines

You have a date with some great beer for a good cause on October 5.

The wisdom Mike has about beer and his willingness to share it is obvious to anyone who speaks with him for any length of time. It makes Mike a quiet but influential figure in the beer community, and he knows there is plenty of room for everyone. “I think the breweries have a great chance in Dayton, especially with Columbus, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Kentucky not too far away.” And he thinks Dayton has just started to hit its stride. “I don’t know what happened to Dayton. It has one of the world’s best water supplies. It is very comparable to English water. It is beautiful ale water, and there is plenty of it here.” When asked if he thought that the Miami Valley was getting too many breweries and brew pubs too soon, his answer was a very quick “Absolutely not.” He even sees some lessons that the “fizzy yellow beer” producers can teach all of these new brewers. “Back in the late 1800’s, Anheuser Busch was making a European style lager. They almost went belly up until they decided to lighten the beer up by using rice. Anheuser Busch actually listened to the consumer, adjusted, and hit a home run. Americans were looking for a lighter, drier finish. I don’t have a problem with yellow, fizzy beer. There is a beer for everybody, and we all need to accept that and honor someone’s beer. If that’s what they like, that’s what they like. If everyone is drinking that beer, they leave my imperial stout alone!”

Mike Schwartz is not just a lover of beer; he is a lover of the industry and the community that supports him. He gives that love right back in a way that raises all the people around him. He does what he can to make sure everyone gets the help they need. His view of success sums it all up quite nicely: “If you work hard all your life and you take all the proceeds and experience and keep it to yourself, you really haven’t gained anything. But if you can share it with other people and do good for unfortunate people, which makes me feel good. That’s success right there. You can live in your mansions, but if you can’t share it, you haven’t succeeded at life.” I would gladly raise a glass to that sentiment.

Rock Bands Unite to Help Beat Cancer at Blind Bob’s

January 20, 2020 By LIbby Ballengee

I say it often: the Dayton music community is full of the most generous people I know. It’s often a two way street, and this weekend, musicians take care of three of their biggest supporters, who are currently battling cancer. If you love rock’n’roll, this show is a win-win all around!

Night of the Beat (Cancer) takes place at Blind Bob’s on Saturday January 25th, to benefit Jaime Testa, Amanda Hensler and Tyler Gilcher. All three of them have been major supporters of the Dayton music community, staples in the Oregon District, and have huge hearts! They absolutely deserve a fantastic party in their honor, raising money to help them continue their fight.

Music is of course on the agenda! Four area rock bands that are donating their time and talents to this party, including: Abertooth Lincoln, Weathervein, Business Casuals, and We Are The Movies.

Sabrina Cox, one of the organizers of this event, explains what makes this event so special: “Last year was really hard for Oregon District, and Dayton as a whole. In the midst of all the tragedies, three beloved members of the Oregon District community were also fighting cancer. We are a community that comes together to love each other in every situation – and this is no exception. The Cancer Cuties, as we lovingly call them, are our friends, family, and neighbors. All the money collected at the door goes directly to them.”

Amander Hensler is one of the “Cancer Cuties” who is benefiting from Saturday night’s Night of the Beat concert.

Remember the Dead Sunday, Oct 20th at Dia de los Muertos Parade & Celebration

October 11, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Day of the Dead (Dia de los muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

This Sunday, October 20, 2019, Dayton celebrates Dia de los Muertos, and honor the lives of loved ones who have passed. Pre-parade festivities start at 2pm. The parade starts at 4pm, and will travel through the Oregon District on Fifth Street, and arrive at the Missing Peace Art Space for the post-parade celebration from 5-8pm. There will be beautiful altars (offrendas) to enjoy, along with food, music, and dancing!

Taste of The Oregon District Returns Sept 15th

September 9, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The Taste of the Oregon District, one of the Oregon District’s flagship events, returns on September 15, 2019. The Taste of the Oregon District will take place from 2:00  to 8:00 pm on 5th Street in the Oregon District. This is a free-to-attend event and will include samplings from 19 local, independent restaurants with 60+ different “bites” from which to choose, live music, adult beverages, street vendors, and sidewalk sales. Taste of the Oregon District is expected to attract more than 10,000 people from Dayton and the surrounding areas.

“Our goal is to create and host a fun and safe “Taste”-themed block party that will bring locals to the district and support our independent businesses,” explained Kyle Babirad, president of the Oregon District Business Association.

“The Taste of the Oregon District is one of several events planned through the end of the year intended to maintain the momentum and positive spirit of our neighborhood,” said Natalie Skilliter, treasurer of the Oregon District Business Association.

How it Works:

Admission to this family-friendly event is free. Tickets for food and beverages are offered at $1 per ticket. Tickets will buy tasting-size or “bite”-size portions from any of the 19 food vendors. Every vendor offers small “taste” portions between 3 and 7 tickets, which gives visitors a perfect way to sample from a number of different Oregon District restaurants. The tickets are also used to purchase beer and Whiteclaw from our beer trucks located at 5th & Brown and at 5th & Jackson. The shops of the Oregon District will offer sidewalk sales and a handful of outside vendors will set up booths. The Johnson Treatment, a Dayton original funk/jazz/soul band, will be spreading good vibes through music from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Oregon District – 19 “MUST EATS”

August 6, 2019 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Manicotti from Francos

In wake of the events this week, there are no words.  Food Adventures suggests we all take some time and show continued support and love for the Oregon District, by eating at some of the places in and around the area on Fifth Street.  We humbly suggest some of our favorites.  Here’s to keeping Dayton strong.

OREGON DISTRICT “MUST EATS”

Pickle Soup at Blind Bobs

CHEESE MANICOTTI at FRANCO’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO:
The pasta filled with ricotta cheese and blanketed with sauce and mozzarella.  Franco’s wonderful marinara, makes the dish and use that bread to sponge up the goodness.
824 E. Fifth St.

PICKLE SOUP at BLIND BOB’S:
Sounds crazy, tastes incredible.  If you like cream of broccoli soup. you will love this.  It is kicked up a notch with a hint of pickle flavor.  Not overpowering, just perfect and creamy.  A couple of shakes of pepper and you are in the drivers seat, ready to roll.
430 E. Fifth St.

The Hearse Burger from Lucky’s Taproom

THE HEARSE BURGER at LUCKY’S TAPROOM:
Keener Beef
starts the burger out and it is topped with BBQ pulled chicken, cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon and red cabbage slaw.   It is a 1/3 pound burger and more than a mouthful.  Did we mention they have incredible fish dinners where you pick the beer to batter your fish?  Now you know, visit there soon.
520 E. Fifth St.

Lilys Bistro has Fried Chicken on Sundays

FRIED CHICKEN at LILYS BISTRO:
On Sundays they have a treat for you!  Get a choice of a 2 piece dinner, half a chicken dinner, or a whole chicken, cut up into pieces and deep fried.  The golden brown Free-Range Fried Chicken is from a local farm.  The result is a delicious taste in every bite.  Get a bread basket and mashed potatoes to fill the table !
329 E. Fifth St.

MUSSELS AND FRIES at THE CORNER KITCHEN:
These delicious shellfish are steamed and served in a buttery wine sauce with tomatoes.  The mussels are cooked perfectly  and these bites will melt in your mouth. Served with a side or fries for dipping away and sopping up the sauce.
613 E. Fifth St.

Mussels and Fries from the Corner Kitchen

THE HERITAGE PORK CHOP at ROOST MODERN ITALIAN:
A huge grilled pork chop served alongside creamy goat cheese polenta, charred scallions and candied applewood bacon.  Chef Dana Downs has a fantastic gourmet menu, and this is just one of many hits.
524 E Fifth St

The Heritage Pork Chop at Roost Modern Italian

PEPPERONI ROLLS at 416 DINER:
You normally don’t see these unless you are in a big city or upstate New York.  This Italian delight is so good here because of the taste of the homemade bread.  Try a pepperoni roll today !
416 E. Fifth St.

PECAN AND SAGE ENCRUSTED SALMON at SALAR:
So delicate and tasty, this baked dream is the perfect dinner.  Excellent flavors and a generous serving of salmon.  Salar knocked it out of the park with this one.  If you don’t like fish, go for the filet mignon, it is remarkable.
400 E. Fifth St.

Salar’s Pecan and Sage Encrusted Salmon

FISH WITH CHILI SAUCE at THAI 9:
With such an extensive menu, they have terrific food from pad thai to sushi.  We are addicted to the huge fish with chili sauce.  A giant fish filet, deep fried and topped with chili sauce.  The spices in the fish and the sauce toppings are mouth watering.  This dish is so good, it is hard for us to order anything else.
11 Brown St

LOADED POTATO SOUP at THE DUBLIN PUB:

Loaded Potato Soup at the Dublin Pub

A creamy, cheesey bowl of  potato soup topped with bacon crumbles and scallions will have you jumping for joy.  This is warm comfort food at its best.  The pub is also a great place to pair the soup with a brew.  Get lost in the flavor and stay for a second pint.
300 Wayne Ave.

THE SMOKED CHICKEN WINGS at SMOKIN BBQ:
Perfectly cooked, perfectly crispy wings are found here.  The smokey taste is great and the spices are good.  But they have some sauces you need to put on the side for dipping.  They got BBQ sauce and a hot sauce.  Use them individually or mix them, but whatever you do use them every other bite for a true BBQ experience.
200 E. Fifth St

Smoked Wings from Smokin Bar-B-Que

EGGPLANT FRIES at WHEAT PENNY OVEN and BAR:
Served with a yogurt dipping sauce, these are absolutely addicting.  Did we mention they have incredible pizza and pasta dishes?  Yeah, get in here….
515 Wayne Ave.

CHICKEN, BACON, FETA and CILANTRO PIZZA from OREGON EXPRESS:
It is like the 4th of July for your taste buds. You gotta try this.  In a place with fantastic pizza, this one stands out.  Good bar selection too, but the pizzas are off the chart good.  Fun atmosphere and sometimes there are live bands.
336 E. Fifth St.

Oregon Express – Great Pizza

FARM FRESH CHILI from THE TROLLEY STOP:
Made with Keener Farm grass fed beef, fresh onions, peppers & red beans, and topped with your choice of cheese or onions; or both.  A nice, hearty bowl of chili made with local beef.  Slap a squirt of hot sauce on top and you are in business.
530 E. Fifth St.

THE CLAM CHOWDER at JAY’S SEAFOOD:
A Dayton icon and family tradition.  Imagine the creamiest broth in the world, riddled with potatoes and plump clam meat.  Just a dash of black pepper and maybe some crackers to seal this deal.  We are talking childhood memories here or great tastes for the first time.  Either way, this appetizer is the tip of the iceberg of good eats here.
225 E. 6th St.

TOXIC BLONDE at TOXIC BREW CO.:

Beers at Toxic Brew Co.

Take a break from the heat with a cold one at Toxic Brew.  They are pushing the envelope on uniqueness and brewing here.  Like hops? This is a place for you.  We prefer the light ale, Toxic Blonde for an easy drink on a hot summer day.  The atmosphere is fun and the bartenders have a lot of personality.
431 E.Fifth St.

DRUNKEN CHEESECAKE at THE TROLL PUB:
Time for dessert? How about some cheesecake?  Rich and drizzled with caramel is the way to go.  Thank goodness that is how they serve it.  Big menu with lots of big tastes, but this item is special.  Indulge yourself and let your troubles slip away.
216 Wayne Ave.

Drunken Cheesecake from the Troll Pub

RAW OYSTERS at DISTRICT PROVISIONS /GLASZ BLEU OVEN/ JACK LUKEYS OYSTER SALOON and CAVIAR BAR:
Slurp!  Enjoy a taste of fresh raw oysters, just shucked.  Sprinkle a little lemon and or hot sauce on the top and your experience is all that and more.  Three business share a home in this spot.  Wander and browse them all.  Don’t forget a nice craft beer to wash it down.
521 Wayne Ave

Oysters at Jack Lukey’s Oyster Saloon

ONE OF 60 BEERS at CRAFTED AND CURED:
They have 60 crafted alcoholic drinks on tap, yes that’s right.  At the posting time of this article two beers stuck out for us to choose today: Witbier from Mother Stewart’s Brewing Co. in Springfield and Stay Golden Blonde Ale from Steetside Brewery in Cincinnati.  Check out the list of beers currently on tap by clicking HERE.
531 Wayne Ave.

Make sure you continue to support these places and more in their time of need.  Remember all of these

Special “CROWLER Cup” at Crafted and Cured

eateries are locally owned by families just like yours.  Best of all, they have great meals to offer.  Take this time to plan your own Food Adventure at the Oregon District.  See you there !

About Food Adventures: We are three Dayton foodies with a local blog and a weekly column exclusively here on Dayton Most Metro.  Since 2008, we have been highlighting the Miami Valley’s best restaurants, hosting dinner events, cooking classes, and partnering with festivals.  We have a ton of content and you can get more info by liking us on FACEBOOK by clicking HERE.
