New Owner Breathes Life Into Dog’s Breath Tavern

September 18, 2014 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Gary Leasure, New Owner of Dog’s Breath tavern

Been chasing your tail looking for a good watering hole?

New things are happening under the woof, err. roof at Dog’s Breath Tavern on Whipp Road in Kettering.  New owner Gary Leasure has already set some of his vision in motion.  Keeping with the dog theme, he has revamped the menu and promises even more improvements and innovations.

As for drinks, he is focusing on having beer available from every Dayton Brewery.  You could literally do a brew tour without leaving your bar stool.  He is working out distribution with some of the breweries, and has some Dayton beers on tap already.  Right now they have Toxic, Warped Wing, and Yellow Springs Brewery beer on draught.  Dog’s Breath will feature Ohio Breweries on tap as well.  Click HERE for full beer list.

Gary has owned bars before and he hopes to use his experience to make some big changes.  Some things to look for are pool leagues, dart leagues, karaoke,  NFL game specials, new HD TV’s, and bands every week.  The huge restaurant provides a great venue for live music, and a fun atmosphere for watching sports.  Unofficially, one area could be called the “Dawg Pound” and another the “Jungle.”

“Shed” what you knew about this place and let us “retrieve” the scoop on this revamped spot.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

 — The tavern is located at 1912 E. Whipp Rd in Kettering,

— Hours are:  Mon – Thurs: 3pm – Midnight,   Fri – Sat: 11am – 2:30am, Sun: 11am – Midnight

— FREE POOL on Tuesday nights

Homemade “Bones” like this Ham and Cheese Roll

— Wednesdays are Warped Wednesdays, $1 off Warped Wing pints,  and open mic night

— Thursdays Trivia Nights and $1 off all bottle or draft IPA’s

— Fridays is karaoke and Saturday they have live bands !

MUST EATS:

— HAND ROLLED “PULLED PORK BONE” (Egg Roll): The pulled pork bone is served with cole slaw for “dipping.”  They hand roll their homemade egg rolls. Let us tell you, this is their signature appetizer, and some good stuff.  If you don’t like pulled pork, you gotta try the Ham n Cheese rolls, the Turkey Club rolls or the Reuben rolls.  They are all fantastic and made in house !

— DEEP FRIED PRETZEL BITES: Yes deep fried..  This twist on a familiar favorite will make  you “roll over and beg for more !”  The taste is a bit crispier and the pretzels are dusted with a cinnamon spice and some soft of  hot spices.  The bites are served with a honey mustard for dipping that is essential.

Yellow Springs Beer, Warped Wing and more on tap NOW at Dog’s Breath Tavern

— THE DOUBLE BUTTER BURGER: 2 burgers and a mountain of a sandwich.  Here’s the secret: before they cook the burgers on the tabletop fryer, they slap each side with some butter.  You can taste the difference. And cheesey?  OMG they put a ton of American cheese on this one to hold it all together.  Top it how you want it and go town like a hungry Rottweiler.

Honorable Mention: The Buffalo Wings aren’t bad, and go great with a local beer.

The owner promises even more good things to come.  Look for the menu and kitchen to expand, and for some more unique food items and local beers.

So don’t bark, just take some bites at Dog’s Breath Tavern soon.  It is a heck of a place to enjoy some adult beverages, watch some football, shoot pool or take in a live band.  We won’t “hound” you any more.

Speaking of a howling good time, make sure you “LIKE” Food Adventures on Facebook by clicking HERE !  Over 3,000 loyal fans can’t be wrong !

Check out our photo gallery below from our visits to Dog’s Breath Tavern !   You won’t see this anywhere else…. Dog Breath’s Full Menu —>  Page 1      Page 2

Son of Ohio Shock: Part 2 of a History of Horror Hosting in the Buckeye State

April 18, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

Editor’s note:  The piece was submitted by Matthew Brassfield, a local filmmaker and the writer, director and producer of Baron Von Porkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre.

I wrapped up my first article, Ohio Shock, at the beginning of the 80’s and presented hosts like the Ghoul, Dr. Creep, Mad Daddy, Fritz The Nite Owl and many more. Now it’s time to explore the next batch of hosts that kept the 80’s to present day scary for Ohioians.

Phil Chandler

In Ohio Shock we spoke about the Shock Package, a group of Universal Films that helped spawn the Horror Host genre into entertainment the whole family could watch. In 1958 a second package was released called “Son of Shock” that not only showcased horror from Universal Pictures but also Columbia Pictures, expanding the catalog of films stations and hosts could show. This new package brought new films to TVs across America and inspired new hosts with new shows. Most modern horror hosts show public domain horror, sci-fi and fantasy films and sometimes independent films made by upcoming directors.

Phil Chandler

Before we move on to the 1980s, I wanted to highlight a local host from the 70s that I just recently became aware of. Phil Chandler hosted “Friday Fright Festival” in the early 70’s in Dayton, Ohio and was Dr. Creep’s competition for a time. Phil, who was a vampire type character, would host cheesy movies late nights and was joined by side characters that included a Frankenstein monster and werewolf, both of whom had funny quirks. Phil was also a brilliant illusionist went on to become a ringmaster in the circus. His show’s side characters went on to make numerous appearances on Shock Theater with Dr. Creep. As of this point I am not aware of any surviving footage from his show.

The Cool Ghoul II

The Cool Ghoul II

In 1972, The Cool Ghoul’s run came to an end, and fans would have to wait until 1984 for a second wacky version of the host to hit TV sets with “Thriller Theatre” that aired in Akron. While The Cool Ghoul II also did a show in Canton in 1970, it was his second run that made him popular and turned this second incarnation of the Cool Ghoul into a first rate host. His show ended in 1986, but in subsequent year he was brought back to host Halloween specials and appear at charity events like the Jerry Lewis Telethon. The Cool Ghoul II would also go on to become the Cyber Cool Ghoul when he began hosting an online show. While not as iconic as the original, the second Cool Ghoul was a character all to himself and had a wacky style that got him a solid following. Some of his episodes can be found on trade lists and online.

Son of Ghoul

Son of Ghoul

The Son of Ghoul has been a mainstay on Cleveland television sets since 1986 when he took over the The Cool Ghoul II’s timeslot and began the “Son of Ghoul Show.” The Son of Ghoul was a stylistic mix of Ghoulardi and The Ghoul and was given the name “Son of” by The Ghoul himself when he won a look alike contest. Son of Ghoul would change up his image before hitting the airwaves by adding sunglasses, a top hat and cape to the fake goatee of his mentors. But things turned sour between Son of Ghoul and The Ghoul leaving the hosts at odds with each other and splitting what could have been a very powerful friendship. The Son of Ghoul would not let this get him down as he became yet another horror host icon from Cleveland, eventually becoming so popular that the station had him host a call in-game show. The Son of Ghoul’s hosting style is much like The Ghoul’s: adding sound effects and music to the films to spice them up. His co-hosts, The Fidge (who sadly passed away in 2003) and Jungle Bob, also ended up being just as popular as the Son of Ghoul himself. In 2012 Son of Ghoul is still going strong and is a respected member of the host community. You can find his shows on DVD at his official website.

Frank and Drac

Frank and Drac

Two classic monsters would hit Cleveland in 1987 when Frank and Drac unleashed “The Frank and Drac Show” proving that ghouls love film. Every week they would meet up to host a horror film, spouting facts about the movie and cracking wise on each other. Drac would talk in your typical Transylvania accent as Frank had an almost Curly from the Three Stooges sounding voice, making then a fun pair. The show was a hit and gained high ratings during its one year run. The final episode aired in 1988 due to the ghouls not seeing eye to eye with station higher ups. You can find clips of Frank and Drac on YouTube and episodes on trade lists.

A. Ghastlee Ghoul

A. Ghastlee Ghoul

When Dr. Creep went off the air in 1985, Dayton was left without a horror host. That void was filled in 1989 when A. Ghastlee Ghoul wisecracked his way into the spot with “The Ghastlee Movie Show” and became a beloved late night horror host. Ghastlee, who didn’t always host movies, had a show that more skit-based based and on occasion would show a film that he would wisecrack through or even add himself into. Ghastlee’s style would capture younger and older viewers who watched to see what The Ghastlee One would say next. His style also influenced other horror hosts such as Dr. Freak, who you’ll read about in a bit. Ghastlee would go on to host his show for many years and also co-create the Horrorhost Underground, a resource for hosts and fans around the world. At first Ghastlee wore a black duster, black clothes, gloves and white face paint with a unibrow. Later he would turn in the duster for a custom long red coat and signature hat. The Ghastlee Movie Show still airs and has new episodes from time to time as Ghastlee now also hosts on a YouTube show called “Weird Web Theater.” Ghastlee is also known for his 2004 convention, Scary Camp, and for playing music in and around Dayton. To see Ghastlee’s work you can buy his best of from him and see clips on YouTube.

Dr. Shock

Dr. Shock

“Dr. Shock’s X-Ray Chiller Theatre” was a Toledo show hosted by, you guessed it, Dr. Shock. The program started in 1989 and was cancelled in 1992 when the station, who was a Fox affiliate, decided to show late night infomercials instead. This did not stop the Dr. as he then went on to host independent films that were released on VHS and later DVD. Currently Dr. Show is off the air and his hosting direct to video films days are over, but his zany off the wall humor has touched many fans. You can find Dr. Shock hosting independent films on his website and watch clips online.

Billy Black

Billy Black

One part horror host and one part Andrew Dice Clay sums up Billy Black who brought “Hott Sinema” to Columbus in 1992. Billy Black, who really knew his films, would his time on air in a bar talking to his bartender friend and telling jokes as local strippers would dance in between segments. The show was a racy twist on hosting and was clearly more for adults than kids. Billy’s run was short and his impact not as powerful as the hosts before him, but to his fans he was one cool cat with one wild show. Clips of his show can be found online.

Commandant Gore

Commandant Gore

In 2000, the Centerville/Dayton area met Commandant Gore. Along with his sidekicks, he hosted a show called “Gorevision” and would show clips of things sure to make most viewers’ stomachs turn. Commandant’s show would be on and off for some years and would remain a rather underground show. While his gory visions have been off the air for some years now, those who spent time watching Commandant remember a bloody strange time. The Commandant’s are out there for the finding, but are not widely available.

Dr. Freak

Dr. Freak

The world’s youngest horror host, Dr. Freak (who was 14 when he started) brought his “Cult Theater” to Dayton airwaves for only three episodes during its first run in 2000. But he also made a number of appearances on other host programs such as New Shock Theater with Dr. Creep and The Ghastlee Movie Show hosted by A. Ghastlee Ghoul. Dr. Freak would also go on to star in his own movie called “Dr. Freak Vamp Killa,” directed by Henrique Couto and “Joe Nosferatu: Homeless Vampire,” directed by Bob Hinton keeping the young host active for the time. Dr. Freak would also make appearances at Cinema Wasteland and Horrorama Dayton. Dr. Freak’s style was a mix of old school hosting with a youthful twist, making for some interesting episodes. As of late, Dr. Freak has made a small return as he guest stars on Terrifying Tales of the Macabre (hosted by Baron Von Porkchop), and Cult Theater has returned for an episode on Dayton’s first Scare-A-Thon. So we just may be seeing more of him in the coming years. His episodes have been released on DVD and are hard to find nowadays, but are around for the fan who looks hard enough.

Butch R. Cleaver

Butch R. Cleaver

Butch R. Cleaver is a 1959 man stuck in modern times after an accident left him and his wife stranded in 2003. Every week Cincinnati fans can watch “Meet Cleaver Theatre” to find out what this old horror buff thinks of films he missed in the 50 years he skipped. Butch spends his time hosting movies and working in his lab doing zany experiments, making him a fan favorite. Butch is a classic host with a modern show that’s great to enjoy in the late hours. Butch R. Cleaver, who must wear his 3-D Glasses at all times to see properly, has slowed down as of late and with fewer episodes and public appearances in 2011, leaving fans hoping that Butch and Meet Cleaver Theatre will be back soon in full force. Episodes can be found at his public appearances, on trade lists and online.

The Mortician

The Mortician

The Mortician is a hulking skeleton faced man who took pride in his work of cutting bodies and hosting films on “The Mortician’s House of Fear” that started in 2003 and aired in Brunswick. Every week viewers would watch as he went to work on the dead body and talked about the films as heavy metal music played in the background. The show’s segments were shot as if on scratchy old film, and this added a great spooky feel to the show. While his House of Fear has been off the air for many years now, the Mortician certainly made his mark in Ohio hosting history. His show can be found on DVD via his website and at some online rental stores.

Tarr & Fether

Tarr & Fether

In 2004 Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether opened up the asylum doors to Liberty City viewers with their “Psycho Cinema,” and the madness of the two crazed loonies was unleashed. The pair would make up fake products, do skits and even look for local monster legends giving viewers laughs and adventure. The pair, who have been missing for some time, have hinted at a return giving fans something to look forward to. Tarr and Fether’s hosting style is very classic, and the two speak in almost proper English accents giving the show an old time feel. Both share the names of characters from an old Edger Allen Poe short story, making you wonder if these ghouls were the ones Poe wrote about. They also had a great opening sequence which resembled an original Sony Playstation video game. DVDs of their show can be bought at their official website and clips can be found on YouTube.

Dale Kay

Dale Kay

Dale Kay is the host of “Dale Kay’s Spookshow,” a Cleveland show that started in 2007 and is an old school horror host show that’s safe for the young and the young at heart. Dale, who was inspired by The Ghoul, hosts films and fills the time with skits parodying popular genre films and products. Dale and his Spookshow are still going strong and can also be seen on The Monster Channel (www.100ymm.com), a website that showcases all things horror including many horror host programs. Dale Kay’s shows can be inquired about via his Facebook page.

Iris and Reina

Iris & Retina

Two cool cats rocked their way into Dayton host history when Iris and Retina began “Mondo Smash A’ Go Go” in 2008. The pair hosts from their living room and shares a deep knowledge of the films they are watching alongside you. During break segments Iris & Retina will teach you to cook, host a dance contest or visit a local coffee shop making you feel the overall smooth vibe of the show. Their laid back nature is very much in the vein of Fritz The Nite Owl. As of late 2011, Iris & Retina have made a new episode that premiered before Dayton’s first Scare-A-Thon, and are slated to be on a future episode of Baron Von Porkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre. At times, you can catch them at surf rockers Team Void’s concerts. Episodes can be bought at Game Swap in Kettering and can been seen via YouTube.

Baron Von Porkchop

Baron Von Porkchop

In late 2010, Baron Von Porkchop was dug up from his grave and began hosting “Terrifying Tales of the Macabre” in Dayton. The Baron is an undead ghoul from the 1800’s who used to own slaughter houses that all went belly up. Now alongside his wife and a team of sidekicks, the Baron brings viewers classic horror films along with independent features. While the films on the show are not always, the Baron’s segments are kid friendly and are geared for fans of horror hosts from the 60’s-80’s, and his goofy nature has gained him a growing fan base. The Baron, who just wrapped his second season, has also hosted his own concert event called The Baron’s Ball at Gilly’s Jazz Club and has made appearances at Horrorhound Weekend, Cinema Wasteland, WYSO’s Kaleidoscope and Horrorama Dayton. The Baron also loves to bring host friends onto his show and has featured cameos from hosts such as A. Ghastlee Ghoul, Dr. Freak, Sammy Terry (Indiana), Count Gregula (Chicago) and more. The Barons shows can be bought at Game Swap in Kettering and online.

Dr. Dark

Dr. Dark

Imagine if Elvira Mistress of the Dark and Dr. Creep spawned an offspring that was a phantom and you would have Dr. Dark of “After Dark Theater” that began airing in Greenville in 2011. Despite being a phantom, Dr. Dark is a gentle undead soul who brings viewers classic public domain films alongside his own brand of comedy. While fairly new to hosting, Dr. Dark seems to be gaining a fan base based in and around his viewing area. Dr. Dark has also made some public appearances that include Horrorhound Weekend and the A. Ghastlee Night at Gillys concert. Dr. Dark also does many charity events and even does a kid friendly version of Robot Chicken for his public access station. His show can be seen on TV with future DVDs planned.

Susie D. Rott

Susie D. Rott

Susie D. Rott is a undead bride who hosts “Susie D. Rott’s Warehouse of Terror” in Hamilton. Her journey to bring the viewers the best (or is that worst) in public domain and independent films started in 2011 and is still going strong as of early 2012. Susie is joined in her warehouse by her director and a lot of sidekicks. Susie is a sweet undead woman who enjoys sharing her films and her warehouses with viewers. While a new face in the world of hosting, Susie could quickly earn a place in Ohio hosting history. Susie’s shows can be seen on the Monster Channel and clips are online.

And there you have some of the ghouls and bad movie historians that have and are haunting Ohio airwaves. Ohio has always been a mecca for horror hosts and has some of the world’s best fans who stand by and support their favorite late night hosts. But we aren’t the only ones. There are many states with amazing hosts: Indiana has Sammy Terry of Nightmare Theater, Iowa has Marlena Midnite of Midnite Mausoleum, Pennsylvania has Roxsy Tyler of Carnival of Horrors and so on in every state.

Ohio Shock: a History of Horror Hosting in the Buckeye State

March 20, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro 5 Comments

Editor’s note:  The piece was submitted by Matthew Brassfield, a local filmmaker and the writer, director and producer of Baron Von Porkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre.

Ohio has always been a hot bed for what I like to call the “Art of Horror Hosting”, and many amazing characters have graced Buckeye State TVs in the late night and afternoons. Do you remember sitting in a dark living room under the glow of the TV set with a bowl of your favorite snacks and your eyes glued to the screen?  While you watched, the host seemed to be your friend and kept you safe from The Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster and the ghouls of the film you were watching alongside him. Yes, I said alongside him. A good Horror Host becomes a friend that watches the terrors on the screen with you and makes it less scary as they joke their way through several hours. Many kids today haven’t experienced the wonders of cheesy horror films on late night television; kids can watch horror films directly on their cellphones or stream them from Netflix. Before the internet of course, we’d find out about older films from books or magazines and then wait for them to appear on TV. I learned about numerous films from seeing them on a horror host programs. Some of the hosts were on national stations like USA Network who had Commander USA hosting his “Groovie Movies.” Rhonda Shear and Gilbert Gottfried kept us “UP ALL NIGHT.” TBS had Grandpa Munster hosting “SUPER SCARY SATURDAY.” Elvira and her “Movie Macabre” filled the syndicated airwaves, and TNT had “MONSTER VISION” with host Joe Bob Briggs preceded briefly by comedy act Penn & Teller.

But it was the hometown hosts that seemed to really connect with viewers, making these ghouls into local super stars. So let’s take a look at some of these amazing late night icons of Ohio Horror. Some you may have watched growing up, some you might watch now and some you may have never heard of.

But first I should explain about the show title “Shock Theater” or “Shock Theatre.” Many Dayton folks think that this exclusively refers to Dr. Creep’s weekly host program, but that’s not the case at all. In 1957 Universal Pictures teamed with Screen Gems to allow 52 of their classic monster films to be aired on TV. This was called “The Shock Package,” and stations around the world employed costumed hosts to introduce the films and entertain viewers during commercial breaks. Most shows were called Shock Theatre, and the hosts were often people who already worked for the station or radio DJ’s. The Shock Package was a huge hit, and it spawned “The Son of Shock Package,” opening the door for more hosts and more films to choose from. Horror Host programs became must-see TV, and people flooded to see the hosts at public appearances. So now that you know a little about the Shock Package that helped start the ball rolling (along with Vampira, the first Horror Host), it’s time for us to take a look at some of Ohio’s hosts through the ages.

Alexander & Troggy

Alexander & Troggy

In the late 1950’s, Alexander and his pet troglodyte, Troggy, took over “Shock Theater” in Youngstown, Ohio from David Allen (a floating head who was the show’s original host) and made a small impact with viewers. Today no one is sure how many episodes and years the show ran leaving the scientist and his freakish pet a slight mystery. It’s a shame not much is known about Alexander and Troggy because from what I can gather, they would be Ohio’s second or third horror hosts ever. It also seems as if all shows have been lost, and that’s a heartbreaking for many fans and collectors who would have loved to see what misadventures these two got into. NOTE: Lost shows is a widespread issue with classic host shows. Many times stations would record over the past show to save money on film or the episodes were shot live and never recorded, leaving them lost forever.

Mad Daddy

Mad Daddy

Mad Daddy hosted “Shock Theater” for the summer of 1957 in Cleveland. Mad Daddy wore a black cape and would host the movies in all types of crazy ways including being broadcasted upside down. Viewers complained about the weirdness, and Mad Daddy went off the air pretty quickly. Mad Daddy’s run was just for a summer, but the Horror Host went on to be a radio DJ and semi-celebrity who recorded songs like “I Love a Good Practical Joke.” In June 1958, he parachuted over Lake Eerie while writing a poem as a publicity stunt. Mad Daddy continued to work in radio until 1968 when sadly he took his own life. Mad Daddy played his character very creepy and overly happy with a wonderful sinister laugh. After television he took the character on many radio shows for many stations. He also inspired punk rock band The Cramps who wrote the song “Mad Daddy” about the Horror Host/Radio DJ. Much like Alexander and Troggy, his short run of hosting Shock Theater seems to be lost forever as no known episodes have come to light.

Bargain City Kid and Willie Thall

The Bargain City Kid & Willie Thall

Cincinnati’s “Shock Theatre” was hosted by The Bargain City Kid and his sidekick Willie Thall in the early 1960’s and was sponsored by The Kid’s own discount store called Rinks. The Bargain City Kid wore a cowboy hat and toy guns and would spend most of the show doing silly things and featuring items that were on sale at the store. Many times they would also do skits with pro wrestlers like the original Sheik to promote the wrestling shows on the air or currently in town. The Bargain City Kid and Willie Thall would also announce for pro wrestling and are Cincinnati’s first horror hosts. Sadly, Thall passed away in 2005, and Kid passed away in 2007. Like the hosts mentioned above, all known shows are missing and are much sought after by fans of this classic host team.

Ghoulardi

Ghoulardi

In 1963 Ghoulardi began hosting Cleveland’s “Shock Theater” and would go on to become a local icon and one of Ohio’s most popular hosts. In addition to Shock Theater, Ghoulardi hosted numerous other shows around the area, always keeping him in the minds of the viewers. Ghoulardi was a hipster kind of guy with a quick wit, fake goatee and a mess of a wig. The fun, kid-friendly host opened doors for many hosts that followed, not to mention was the direct influence to such hosts as The Ghoul, Son of Ghoul and Big Chuck. In 1966, Ghoulardi stepped away from the show and went to California where he became the voice of ABC and did voiceovers for shows like McGyver and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Ghoulardi passed away in 1997 leaving a great legacy. Ghoulardi’s image was also shown many times in “The Drew Carry Show,” that was set in Cleveland. Another fun fact is that his son is Paul Thomas Anderson, director of films like “Boogie Nights” and “There Will Be Blood”. Ghoulardi’s show has some episodes floating around. While not available to the masses, they can be found on tape trade lists. In 2011 Ghoulardi was inducted into the new Horror Host Hall of Fame, making him one of three Ohio hosts to receive this high honor.

Hoolian, Little John and Big Chuck

Hoolihan, Big Chuck & Little John

1966 in Cleveland saw the exit of Ghoulardi but the start of “The Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show.” It took the true horror out of hosting but mixed in lots of humor with a sketch comedy approach, and the show proved to be a hit. Big Chuck, who worked on Shock Theater with Ghoulardi, was chosen alongside his friend Hoolihan to fill the time slot and host the night’s movie. The two were a beloved team until 1979 when Hoolihan left the show, and Little John stepped into the mix to co-host. The combo of Big Chuck and Little John was a perfect fit, and the two worked together until 2007 when the show finally came to an end. Big Chuck has over 40 years of hosting under his belt and still remains a popular local celebrity. He even wrote a book called My Favorite Stories From 47 Years On Cleveland TV. Many continue to argue about who was better to host the films with Big Chuck. Some say that it was Hoolihan because he was there when the show was fresh and new, but others say Little John who had great comedic timing. Whoever you prefer, the show was a great time, and lots of the Big Chuck and Little John shows are still around.

Cool Ghoul

The Cool Ghoul

In 1969 Cincinnati got another host by the name of The Cool Ghoul with a show called “Scream-In.” The Cool Ghoul wore a red wig, a goofy hat and cape and would spend time reading fan mail, talking to his off screen friend and being your every day silly ghoul. He became a hit and even recorded an album called “The Cool Ghoul’s Phantasmagorical Funny Fonograf Record.” There was also a dance called Cool Ghoul, naturally. The Cool Ghoul also made public appearances much to the delight of fans of all ages. Scream-In’s time was up in 1972, but despite such a short time on the air, The Cool Ghoul became an Ohio hosting icon and has inspired many other local hosts. The Cool Ghoul passed away in 2004, leaving behind many great memories for those who watched him late nights. Some of The Cool Ghoul’s show footage has survived and can be found in the hands of collectors and on trade lists. In 2011, the Cool Ghoul was inducted into the first class of hosts in the Horror Host Hall of Fame, acclaiming his importance in the community of hosts.

Superhost

Superhost

Superheros wanted to host films too, and in 1969 Cleveland had one who just did that when Superhost brought his “Supes On” pre-show and more important “Saturday Afternoon Mad Theater” to viewers. Superhost was a goofball of a hero who would wear a Superman inspired costume and a red clown nose. He would introduce the films, tell jokes and do a few sketches. His antics would entertain viewers so much that even when Saturday Afternoon Mad Theater was cancelled, Superhost continued to host Three Stooges shorts, cartoons, The Munsters and Batman for the station. He’s the first host I know of who had his own pre-show! Superhost was a child-friendly host who made his way into Cleveland culture by lasting on TV for many years. Superhost would hang up his cape in 1992 and step away from hosting. Clips and a few full shows can be found on trade lists and on Youtube.

The Ghoul

The Ghoul

Cleveland had its share of hosts that include Hoolihan & Big Chuck, Superhost and Mad Daddy. All made their mark on the area but none made as massive an impact as Ghoulardi who inspired this next host: The Ghoul. The Ghoul hit Cleveland airwaves in 1971 with his self titled show and would become yet another icon in Cleveland horror. The Ghoul was an almost re-birthed version of Ghoulardi, a quick witted hipster who wore the fake goatee, mustache and crazy wig like his idol. The Ghoul, who could have easily been a carbon copy of his idol, quickly showed he had his own oddball style that fans were quick to embrace. The Ghoul would go on to have his show in syndication and would make numerous public and radio appearances. With his show no longer on traditional television, he continues to make episodes that can be viewed via a subscription on his website. The Ghoul also started his career working for Ghoulardi as well as Hoolihan & Big Chuck as an assistant, gearing him up for his run as a beloved horror host. His show can be found on trade lists, youtube in clips and via his official website.

Dr. Creep

Dr. Creep

For years Dayton, Ohio got their horror host fix from bigger cities like Cincinnati and hosts like the Bargain City Kid. But in 1974 Dr. Creep hit the airwaves hosting “Shock Theatre,” and a true Dayton original was born. Dr. Creep started out as a spooky vampire-like ghoul named Dr. Death, but very quickly his character and name changed to a kid friendly goofy ghoul named Dr. Creep. He became so popular that he also began hosting Clubhouse 22, an after school kids’ show. In 1980 Shock Theatre ended, switched air-date and time and became Saturday Night Dead running until 1985. Years would go by and other horror hosts begin shows, but in 1999 New Shock Theater was unleashed on public access and Dr. Creep brought horror and laughs to another generation of viewers for six years. Dr. Creep was also a man with a big heart as he ran charities, hosted a horror movie marathon called Horrorama for years, did numerous conventions and guest spots on many other shows. One of the big attractions for The Creeper was his schedule of October public appearances at Foy’s Halloween Shop in Fairborn where he would make the Halloween season feel even more special. Sadly Dr. Creep passed away in 2011 leaving a legacy that will never be matched. Dr. Creep merchandise and episodes can be found on DVD via his official site and clips can be seen on Youtube. In 2011, Dr Creep was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame, one of the first 13 hosts to receive this honor.

Fritz the Nite Owl

Fritz The Nite Owl

Fritz The Nite Owl started in 1974 and was Columbus’s first local horror host/ He hosted films 7 days a week, and became a staple of TV sets all over the city. Fritz is a laid back host who peppered witty comments into his segments and was known for his trademark owl sunglasses. The show had a very psychedelic feel with lots of bright colors and special effects. “Nite Owl Theatre” would run Monday-Thursday, Saturday and Sunday while “Double Chiller Theatre” would have Fritz hosting two films on Friday. His first run lasted until 1991, and he would come back two other times for other stations in smaller runs finally ending in 2003. But in 2010 he returned to hosting duties and is still going strong and building an even bigger fan base. Fritz became so big that he won 5 Emmy’s and even had a cameo in a DC comic book were he helped Superman and Captain Marvel save the world! If you would like to see episodes of Fritz The Nite Owl, you can get DVDs from his official website, watch clips on YouTube or find some on trade lists.

Moana

Moana

In the early 80’s Elvira became the “it” ghoul of horror hostesses and many imitations popped up, including Moana who hosted “Moana’s Place” in Columbus beginning 1983. She lived up to being a sexy goth ghoul in a tight black dress. The show, while short lived, did manage to gain a fan base who enjoyed Moana’s silly skits and her easy on the eyes look. At this time no known episodes are around leaving this Ohio horror hostess’ show a much sought after piece of horror host history.

We’ve made it to the early 80’s and there are many more hosts to explore. So look for part of Ohio Shock that will cover the rest of the 80’s to present day hosts. And if you would like to learn more about horror hosts, you can visit Horrorhound Weekend March 23-25 2012 in Columbus where hosts from around the world will gather to greet fans and induct the 2012 class into the Horror Host Hall of Fame. For more info visit www.horrorhoundweekend.com.

Till next time: stay scary Dayton!
