Dayton Hosts First Lego Convention This August

Dayton is going to have its first ever LEGO convention when the BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Convention arrives to the Dayton Convention Center in downtown Dayton for two days: August 18-19, 2018. The event is building on LEGO’s amazing popularity and ingenuity with awesome attractions all centered around everybody’s favorite plastic building blocks.

At past events, the team at BrickUniverse has witnessed thousands of LEGO fans show up to enjoy live LEGO builds, the Building Zone with thousands of LEGO bricks for attendees to build with, and select galleries of amazing and lifesized LEGO models. The organizers has predicted that the Dayton event will be one of the best that they have ever produced and will be sold-out.

Professional LEGO artist Jonathan Lopes will be coming from San Diego, California to showcase over 30 of his select LEGO displays including an 8-foot high LEGO Model of New York City’s Woolworth Building. He will be in attendance all weekend and will be able to talk to attendees on his life as a professional LEGO artist and how they, too, can be LEGO master builders.

Additionally, Chicago-based LEGO artist Rocco Buttliere will be bringing over 50 massive LEGO models of famous landmarks from around the world. See the largest skyscraper in the world, Burj Khalifa, the full Westminster Palace in London, and more famous landmarks all built from LEGO bricks! Both artists have had exhibitions around the world: London, Chicago, Dallas, Copenhagen, and New York.

Iconic DAI Meets Iconic DANA….for Trivial Matters!!

Everyone loves trivia, and when you bring one of Dayton’s most beloved celebrities into host, you are sure to have a hoot. The Dayton Art Institute is hosting a very special night of trivia on Friday July, 13th, which includes the current Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits exhibit. “This is a fun way to get people into the museum to see this astounding set of photographs.” says DAI board member, Joshua Stucky. “It has been getting rave reviews.”

And speaking of rave reviews, enter the hostess, Dana Sintell, Dayton’s enduring drag hostess and comedienne. “This is right up my alley!” says Ms. Sintell, a 34 year veteran of the Dayton Drag culture. “My whole life has been trivial….and I would imagine I have lived through some of these historical events being asked about.”

Sintell, best known as the hostess and voice of the RubiGirls, couldn’t believe her luck in being asked. “I think the Museum knows a living work of art when they see one! The Venus Di Milo and I were good friends for God’s sake!”

The trivia night will be a full one. The Karsh exhibit will open to ticket holders at 6:30pm, followed by trivia in the Leo Bistro at 7:30pm. The event concludes at 9:00pm. Delicious food will be provided by Fusian with a cash bar available.

Sintell promises to keep things light and fun. “Trivia is supposed to be exciting and entertaining. I know some of the staff at the DAI and I bet you anything they have been looking long and hard for some great questions. This is going to be a real challenge!!” When asked about whether she will give a performance that night, Sintell quipped, “Ummm, have you met me?”

The event costs $10 for DAI members and $20 for non-members.

Nominate Those Making A Difference in Dayton

Nominations are being sought for the 2018 Mayor’s Award, created by Mayor Nan Whaley in recognition of outstanding civic contribution and acheivement.

The awards will recognize honorees in five areas:

Daytonian of the Year – An individual making the greatest contribution to Dayton in the previous year.
Community Service – An organization that supports and promotes service to the community.
Giving Back to Neighborhoods – An individual or neighborhood group that has supported and inspired their neighborhood.
Education Champion – An organization working hard to provide a brighter future for our children.
Workforce Pipeline – An organization promoting skill or trade development in students.

Nominations may be submitted at daytonohio.gov/mayorsaward by August 3. Nominees must be located within the Dayton city limits.

Winners will be chosen by an awards committee, and awards will be presented at a City Commission meeting. The honorees will also be highlighted in special video productions and on the City’s social media channels.

Luminaries of Dayton: Swords as a cemetery symbol

Crossed swords are often see on the gravestones of veterans, especially officers and symbolizes that the deceased died in battle.

G. A. R. – stands for Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization for men who fought and were honorably discharged from the Union Army during the Civil War.

On Capt. Curtis’s head stone we find quite a bit of information. His rank, his regiment and state served from, where he died in battle and date and his age at death.

Capt. D. K. Curtis of the 11 REG ONG fell at Mission Ridge, Tenn. November 25, 1863. Aged 23 years, 11 months, 17 days.

John S. Downs was a Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company B, 4th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was killed at the Battle of Antietam during his regiment’s participation in the Union assault on the Sunken Road. His name is inscribed on the 4th New York Infantry Monument that stands in the Antietam National Cemetery, and on the New York State Monument in the Antietam National Battlefield.

Captain Downs died on September 17, 1862 at the age of 38.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is located at 118 Woodland Avenue off of Brown Street near the UD Campus. The Woodland Office is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday 8 am to 12 pm. Jeffery Rezabek Appointed New Montgomery County Juvenile Court Justice

Today Governor John R. Kasich announced the appointment of Representative Jeffery S. Rezabek of Dayton (Montgomery Co.) to serve as a judge on the Montgomery County Juvenile Court. Rezabek will assume office on July 12, 2018 and must run in the November 2018 election to retain the seat for the full term commencing January 1, 2019. Rezabek is replacing Judge Nick Kuntz who passed away.

Rezabek, a graduate of the University of Dayton’s School of Law (1997), served in private practice before his election in 2015 to the Ohio House of Representatives. Rezabek served as the Substitute Magistrate for the Dayton Municipal Court from 2009-2012. He has been admitted to both the Ohio and New York State Bar Associations.

DEFINING HEALTH COACH
As the new face of wellness to the Food Adventure Crew, I wanted to take a moment to clarify exactly what a health coach is, how I became certified, and how this career is forging new ground in the allied health care system.

Also known as a wellness consultant, health coaches are certified professionals, offering a fairly new link in the allied health professional network. Together, allied health professionals work in teams to prevent disease and its progression, understand its root cause, and provide a range of direct patient/client care and support.

Specifically, a health coach works with individual clients to create and implement health improvement interventions. At the core, we analyze disease risk and prevention. The goal is to create a balanced approach to holistic health and healing. The work is client-centered, allowing the client to create solutions and strategies that will work best for their unique lifestyle. Working as dedicated advocates, health coaches develop a collaborative relationship with their clients to improve their lifestyle for the better. Time is spent exploring a client’s baseline of how they are currently living their life, what their daily habits are, established routines of living, and analyzing where improvements can be made. Once areas are identified where behavior change and modifications would be beneficial, the client then prioritizes these needs. Together, an action plan is implemented, working toward highly personalized goals set by the client.

PRIORIIZE
Overwhelm is a common theme and setback when working on behavior change. Therefore in my specific work at Jessie Whitesell Health + Wellness, the client creates and prioritizes individual action steps. The focus is only on one change or new behavior at a time. Once that behavior is underway or possibly mastered, a new behavior then becomes the focus. Implementing these small changes, one behavior at a time, creates the foundation and the building blocks for sustainable habits to living one’s healthiest life.

Through strategies focusing on stress management, proper nutrition, quality sleep, and appropriate exercise and movement, clients are asked take a proactive approach towards controlling their own health. Clients are educated and encouraged to develop a growth mindset and create lifestyle changes that promote well being for long term wellness.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HEALTH
Within my first two years of working in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, I quickly recognized that my background in counseling psychology was a huge attribute to how I was effectively working with my clients. Behavioral change was clearly going to be a necessary part of my work if I wanted to be effective. I soon explored all of the health coaching certifications and chose the American Council of Exercise Health Coach Certification. ACE is the only organization whose health coaching certification is accredited by the National Council on Certifying Agencies (NCCA). This distinction means the certification has been officially recognized by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence as a credential whose holders are competent professionals in the field of health coaching.

Currently, there is no licensure requirement or standardized set of education to become a health coach due to zero state or national accrediting organizations governing the practice of health coaching. Therefore, it is up to the client or employer to demand this type of education before hiring a coach.

Get the family involved in healthy lifestyles

Jessie Whitesell Health + Wellness has since grown to reach more clients more effectively with these credentials. As well, my work as a certified health coach inspired me to also become a certified behavioral specialist, fitness nutritionist, and autoimmune paleo coach.

I am confident in my practice that I am positively affecting the lives of my clients and their families. I believe that this career path will be growing monumentally in the coming years as the allied health care network recognizes the integral role that health coaches play in creating health and well being in the lives of their patients and clients.

10 Must Attend Charity Fundraisers for July

Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.

Robert Patterson was a senior executive at NCR and a leader in community affairs. He helped to found the local Boy Scouts and the Dayton Rotary Club and was active with the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Miami Valley Hospital.

Young’s Ice Cream Charity Bike Tour

Cycle to support four local charities! The ride starts and ends at Young’s, with 28-mile, 56-mile, 83-mile, 100-mile and 166-mile (two-day) options. Two-day participants stay overnight in great accommodations at Ohio Northern University. Riders of all ages and abilities raise money for charity and have a good time riding the well-marked routes. Food and ice cream is provided to all volunteers and riders.

This bike ride raises funds for the following charities: Alzheimer’s Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, South Community Behavioral Health & United Rehabilitation Services.

Xenia has long been marked as the home of the tornado, a twister they can’t seem to shake. But there is much more to this little burg that awaits you!

Head over for the history, and there is plenty of it. Check out the Greene County Historical Society, which is basically comprised of three buildings.You will find an old cabin there, the Galloway, which was relocated to the city itself and answers many of the questions about the great chief Tecumseh and his friendship with the family.I have long been obsessed with Tecumseh and his desire to save his Native Families in the area. The guides in the cabin have a multitude of answers to your questions. Many artifacts and historical items await you at the Galloway.

Next, you will find the Victorian Town House, which is chock full of antiques and memorabilia from the best of days in Xenia. Preserved beautifully and presented well, its a fun trip down memory lane. Lastly, a brick building housing more Greene County historic items, as well as a slew of pictures of the infamous tornado completes the history lesson perfectly.

After getting your lesson, grab a bike, as Xenia’s bikeways (Greene Way Bike Trails)are considered by many the ‘best in Ohio.’ You can ride this mostly flat, gorgeous stretch for miles. Recommended is the trip from Spring Valley to Yellow Springs. Xenia’s stretch, is NOT to be missed as the trail follows tree covered spaces and a soft rolling stream (the Little Miami) that eventually forms Clifton Gorge and John Bryan.

So, now you are hungry….and I have to say it, go to Nick’s.

If you have read my articles previously, you know I aim for the fancy, but Nicks’s does the bar food thing perfectly. Grab a Menage’a’Trois (sandwich that is) or the Sexy Club (again a sandwich). Both are sure to please. Add in some wings (chick’s strippers) and fries….and since you’ve been biking, grab aan ice cold Great Lakes draft. It’s fun and it’s definitely satisfying. Overall: ‘X’tremely interesting history and great recreation in Xenia!

Letter N: New Carlisle

How many times have you seen the sign for New Carlisle on 70 and thought ‘wonder what’s up there?’ A lot actually! Head into town early and stop at the ‘World-Famous’ Mel-o-Dee restaurant. The Mel-O-Dee has been revived since its close encounter with a funnel cloud recently, but from the ashes, the same delicious food we all know and love. For breakfast, you will hear people oinking about the Mel-O-Dee Chops and Eggs, a center cut chop with two eggs. I have long though they have great coffee, and still am trying to figure out what brand it is.

They do lunch and dinner well too!
Off you go to find some bourbon. BOURBON? Yep, that’s right. New Carlisle is home to the Indian Creek Distillery.

The tiny family-owned business is perfect for touring, and taking in the beautiful setting. It’s literally like a postcard, it is so picturesque. There is a great history of the land, how the distillery got started and it’s ‘best kept secret’ status revealed. Great visit for all…check it out!

Stop in Penny Lane for a quick coffee. It’s a cute. quaint, quintessential coffee and tea shop. They make a great latte, and the service is on-point!

Then what, you ask?

New Carlisle is home to MVG, Meadow View Growers, many put it at the top of the ‘Greenhouse’ lists in the area. Check out the big chair for photos, and make sure you say hi to the goats. MVG is more than just plants, its a destination at this point. For serious gardeners, you will find an extensive number of exotics…I bought 3 of the Flamingo plants!!

A little more food or beer maybe? Ok….571 Grill House is your spot! They have 17 beers on draft, or did at this writing, and some really yummy food. One thing that will floor you is the great atmosphere here. You certainly see why it’s a treasure for New Carlisle. We had a relaxing visit, sharing stories, beers and great wings. The service was sweet, and informative about the draft choices, and menu options. Overall: New Carlisle mixes it up for newbies to their town…it’s nice, new and nostalgic.

World Refugee Day Celebration This Saturday

Welcome Dayton will honor and recognize Dayton’s refugee community by celebrating World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 30. The event will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd., from 11 am to 3 pm, with free admission.

It will include performances from Burundian, Sudanese, pan-African youth, Vietnamese and other groups, there will be food “tasting stations” from 5 different countries, Khmericano Coffee in the afternoon, performances, children’s activities, and an international fashion show! Downtown Parking for $1

The Oregon District parking garage, located at 101 E. Fifth Street, is now an even better parking option for downtown. Just in time for the weekend, new banners were hung yesterday, and new lights are being installed now.

There are brighter walkways at the Oregon District Garage, on the entire ground level from Jefferson to St. Clair streets, as well as the Fifth Street entrance, and the future site for the new mural on Jefferson Street, across from the Levitt Pavilion Dayton.

The Oregon District garage is just $1 after 6pm! This rate is good as long as you exit the garage by 4am. If you end up getting an offer to good to refuse and need to leave your your vehicle in the garage overnight, it reverts back to the $2/hourly rate, but don’t panic- there is a $6/max rate.

You’ll take a ticket when you enter (which you have to do to raise the arm). Then, if you are paying with a credit card, you can pay right there at the exit gate on your way out. If you are paying with cash, you have to pay at one of the machines in the elevator lobby in the first floor of the garage. With a capacity for over 1400 cars, finding a space won’t be hard!

Car trouble while you’re in the garage? The gates all have buttons for assistance (both at entrance and exit). Someone at ABM should be able to respond.

According to the Downton Dayton Partnership, this new $1 rate will support businesses along Fifth Street and the growing number of small businesses in the nearby areas, like St. Clair Lofts and surrounding the future Levitt Pavilion, which will have its first concert August 9.

But if you don’t want to pay, the Downtown Dayton partnership shares “There are still lots of other free parking spaces along the streets in the Oregon Business District. More than 200 spaces can be found along Wayne Avenue, Bainbridge Street, Walnut Street, and Jackson and Pine streets. You can also park for free after 5 pm and weekends in the Greater Dayton Premier Management lot at 400 Wayne Ave., thanks to the innovative parking grant program launched by the Oregon District Business Association.”

International Best Selling Author visits Dayton to Discuss Power of Meditation

We are living in a time of much discord, both within the society at large, and within our own hearts. It’s a time when many people are finding the stresses of everyday modern life are taking a toll on their health, careers and relationships. What can we do to find some balance in such an overwhelming, fast paced world?

One of the most important ways to maintain inner peace is through meditation. For most people, this advice is not new. They’ve heard it time and again, but with so much to do, who has time to do “nothing”? Ultra successful people like Steve Jobs, Oprah, Seinfeld, Madonna and many others credit meditation as a key factor in their success. If they have time to meditate, then surely we do too!

Taking time to meditate is not “doing nothing.” It’s giving your restless mind time to calm down, to slow your heart rate, and connect with your inner-self. Uma Mullapudi, a local meditation trainer, explained to me “You take a shower and brush your teeth. You don’t think about it, it’s just part of your daily routine. Meditation is a cleansing for the mind, and it needs it just as badly as your body.” I inquired why our minds need this cleansing so badly. “It’s because you take in stressors and negative impressions going through your day. Meditation, especially Heartfulness method, clears those away.”

The Heartfulness Way that Mullapudi describes is a century-old method of meditation with the power to facilitate an immediate, tangible spiritual experience, irrespective of a person’s faith. This non-denominational practice is taught all over the world, and most recently, the subject of a new best selling book The Heartfulness Way – Simple Tools for Spiritual Transformation. In this heart-centered book, a student, Joshua Pollock, is in conversation with his teacher, Kamlesh D. Patel—affectionately known as Daaji.

While many books describe refined states of being, The Heartfulness Way goes further, providing a pragmatic course to experience those states for oneself, which, per the book’s guiding principle, is “greater than knowledge.” Joshua Pollock is a Heartfulness trainer and practitioner from the United States. In fact, he visited Dayton in his early days of learning the Heartfulness meditation practice. He returns to Dayton on June 24th and June 25th to discuss the journey of writing this book, and how Heartuflness has changed his life, and can help yours too!

Junior Journalists From Kettering’s News Camp Explore Dayton Media

This past week many of Dayton’s local media outlets spent some time with a dozen young campers as part of an IN THE NEWS camp. Presented by the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Counselors Sydney Pence and Nathan Mueller lead these 8-12 year olds around town to visit tv sets at WDTN and WHIO, the Dayton Daily News and The Neon movie theater, hearing from professionals in the industry, learning about how to find, report and edit a story in various forms of media.

And as any good media producer would do- we assigned them a story. We asked them to each to do a write up about their experiences for MostMetro.com. We’re pleased to report that all our cub reporters completed their assignment and made the deadline as well. So please meet our future media superstars:

The Neon’s Jonathan McNeal with Counselors Nathan and Sydney

Hi, my name is Sarah Campbell and I am 12 years old. I go to St. Luke School while doing volleyball and soccer.

This week I attended In the News Camp. On Tuesday we met Amelia Robinson who did the tour of Cox media. When we were in Cox media we met meteorologist, McCall Vrydaghs, and she explained her job and answered all our questions. On Wednesday we went to The Neon and met the manager, Jonathan, and the film commissioner Lisa. Where we learned about their jobs and how important they are. On Thursday, we went to Channel 2 News and met Jamie Jarosik, while seeing the live show, Living Dayton.

The counselors here are amazing. They encourage us to be quiet and well-behaved, but also encourage us to be bold and brave. This was an incredible experience for me and everyone else can say the same. This camp was a major hit on Broadway!

My name is Maya Behnke. I am 8 years old and have a sister.

My favorite thing about summer camp was that we went to Living Dayton. And we went on a tour of the building. And the show was cool cause we went in the audience seats. And we were watching what they do in between commercial. They move things around the studio. And we saw them get ready for the news. And we saw a kitty that was adorable.

My other favorite thing about camp was that we went to WHIO and go tour around it. And saw where it is operated. And saw Amelia Robinson that was the person that was touring us. And we met a meteorologist named McCall Vrydaghs. And taught us what she does as a meteorologist. And we saw where this person blurs out bad words or correct words.

My name is Cassie Beidelschies. I am 12 years old. I like watching YouTube.

My favorite moment is Living Dayton and 2 news. Living Dayton is at 2 news. There was a cute kitty there. We met Jamie Jarosik there too.

My name is Justine Hempstead and I love news because you get to learn new things about news and I learn a lot of different things and I really had a good time. I have a dog and a sister and my mom makes signs and I go to valley!

My favorite field trip for news camp was Jamie Jarosik and an old movie theater because we got to see very very cool things!

Bonus: At the news place we got to pet a kitten!

Gabe Lavender –I am 11 years old. I like jokes, puns, and magic.

I liked Living Dayton a lot. Also I loved the Neon. Another thing I liked is the popcorn at the Neon. I also like the games we play.

Ryan Colon – I like sports. I like football and baseball.

I liked seeing Living Dayton. I liked how it was live. It was funny, they had a lot of food that made me hungry. Also we got to meet the meteorologists.

My name is Izabel Martinez. I am a 10 year old girl with a brother and a dog and of course other close family members and I go to JFK school.

One of my favorite parts of news camp was getting a tour with Jamie Jarosik. Jamie Jarosik showed us around the Channel 2 news building, where we saw interesting things. One of the interesting things we saw while in the News 2 building was the Living Dayton set up and next to it was the Channel 2 news area, where they record those two channels.

My name is Phoebe Banks and I love history, and when I grow up I want to be a sketch artist.

This week at news Camp we did lots of stuff but my favorite was going to the Neon Movie Theatre. When we came in we went in to the first theatre accompanied by Jonathon McNeal. He told us about how he brings small movies and we watched a little short.

After we watched it we came out and then we saw an old movie clip thing, it had thousands of pictures on it. Lisa told her about her job and how she helps with movie and a set for movies. Then we got popcorn and it was so fun then we said thank you and left.

Hi my name is Augustus Niswonger and I am 8 years old. I go to Ascension school. I have five pets. We got to go to News Center 2, and we got to see Jamie Jarosik, and we also got to see Living Dayton live. We also got to go to the Neon and we had popcorn. My group leaders were very nice. The most exciting thing that we did in the news camp was go see a live showing of Living Dayton. And saw Jamie Jarosik and toured the Channel 2 station the same day.

My favorite part was going to the Neon and eating popcorn. It was fun because we got to learn how to make a movie. First, Lisa taught us how to do business with people. Then she taught us how to get props. Next she taught how to be part of a crew.

$500 Green Idea Contest Is Back!

In 2016, the B.Y.O. Bottle won the Inaugural Bring Your Green challenge Green Idea contest. That idea has morphed into BYOchange.org -a campaign to encourage consumers to make better choices to reduce waste and environmental impact.

The 2018 contest is challenging YOU in Bring Your Green 2.0 to further the impact of the Be Your Own Change campaign by helping us define a mystery challenge for local teams to up-cycle materials for a finished project that can be used to reduce waste and/ or to educate and mobilize to shift attitudes & behaviors at the Boneyard Build Off – a “Junkyard Wars” style competition to be held on August 4-5, 2018 at Carillon Park.

Art displays, robotics, drones, crushers, human powered machines, bio-feedback, are all in play! We want all your creative ideas. Just consider four parts of the problem: waste reduction, resource use, consumer experience and the possible visible solution.

Best part of this? If your idea is selected, you will receive a $500 check and you will see your idea come to life at the Dayton Mini Maker Faire!

The “EF Hutton Talks Conference Series” inaugural event will cover issues surrounding the rights of users in social networking.
