Michio Kaku Talks “Physics of the Future” For FREE Courtesy of WSU

March 17, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

michio_kaku

Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku will discuss “Physics of the Future” as part of Wright State’s Presidential Lecture Series and Honors Institute on March 19.

When he was in high school, Michio Kaku assembled a particle accelerator in his parents’ garage for a science fair project. Today, he is an internationally known theoretical physicist who has become a fixture in the media and helps popularize science for the masses.

Kaku will be Wright State University’s final Presidential Lecture Series speaker of the year, and the featured speaker of the 2014 Honors Institute, when he delivers a speech, “Physics of the Future,” at the Wright State Nutter Center on Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. Kaku’s lecture is free and open to the public.

“He is very good at popularizing physics and getting people interested and excited about learning more,” said Jason Deibel, associate professor of physics. “He scales it down for people who don’t have professional training in physics and makes it real for them.”

Kaku, the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics at the City College of New York, is the co-founder of string theory, a major branch of theoretical physics. His goal is to complete Albert Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything,” to derive an equation that will summarize all the physical laws of the universe.

Kaku has written several books about physics and related topics, including two New York Times bestsellers: Physics of the Impossible(2008) and Physics of the Future (2011). His latest book, The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind, touches on topics such as telepathy, mind reading, photographing a dream and mentally controlled robots.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NbBjNiw4tk’]

The silver-maned Kaku (a figure skater who likes to throw his wife into the air) is also a familiar figure in the media. He has hosted TV specials for the BBC, The History Channel, Discovery Channel and Science Channel. He has also appeared on 60 Minutes, Nightline, 20/20 and a host of other programs.

Sam Sifton

The Honors Institute will also include a symposium and luncheon address by Sam Sifton, The New York Times national editor, on Thursday, March 20, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. Sifton’s talk, “The Future of Journalism,” is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.

Sifton became national editor ofThe Times in 2011, after serving as the newspaper’s restaurant critic for two years. He joined the paper in 2002 as deputy dining editor and became dining editor later that year. In 2004, he was named deputy culture editor. Prior to joining The Times, Sifton was a senior writer and editor at Talk magazine; critic, reporter and managing editor of the New York Press; and a social studies teacher in New York City’s public schools. He is the author of Field Guide to the Yettie: Stalking the Dot-Com Geek.

His participation in the 2014 Honors Institute Symposium is courtesy of The New York Times in Education program sponsored at Wright State by First Year Programs, University College.

The symposium also includes discussion sessions on “Big Data and Smart Health care,” “Envisioning Flight in the Wright Brothers Era,” “The Future of Higher Education,” “Is Sustainability Possible?” and “Literary Visions of the Future.”

More information on the Honors Institute is available on the Honors Program website.

A wise man once said, “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” and that’s one thing that those of us at the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC  has come to know, understand, adapt to, and appreciate!  After all without change things become boring, stagnant, and let’s face it predictable–all things that Fashion should never become!  So with that being said, the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC is excited to announce changes to our schedule of events for May!! 😀

Originally it was announced that we would be having our very first Fashion Week May 6-10, however after revisiting our ultimate goal and mission which is to provide support for area and independent designers and then reviewing our own availability from Models (most of whom are in school age and or in college during the week), our very own staff (all of which have day jobs and faced a few scheduling issues), a few participating designers(who were only available during the weekend), and of course one of our main events conflicted with one of the largest events in Downtown—URBAN NIGHTS!!  So after careful thought and consideration, it was decided that “(DE-FI)ance Fashion Week” should be consolidated into a weekend event and hence “A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance” was born!!

So without further ado, we are proud to announce the schedule for (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week which will kick off during the largest street party in Dayton—URBAN NIGHTS!!

A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance Kicks Off during Urban Nights May 9!!

The Rumors Are True — Apple is Coming to Dayton and MacTown Is Making Its Move

March 7, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

imgres-3Apple has confirmed that it plans to open an Apple Store at The Greene Towne Center in early summer.  In response to this exciting development, Apple representatives and MacTown, the Miami Valley’s premiere Apple Specialist, have decided to move the current MacTown store and re-open it south of Dayton.

There has been lots of talk about Apple coming to Dayton and the opportunities and benefits that Apple’s arrival will bring to our community.  We at MacTown couldn’t agree more!  Our entire team is excited to welcome an Apple retail store to the Dayton market; knowing full well the value that such a facility will provide for local individuals and business.  However, Apple stores do have limitations in their portfolio of offerings, and the professionals at MacTown are working with Apple to make sure those gaps are filled.

Apple Inc. is a highly successful consumer giant focused on driving a high volume of sales transactions through its corporate retail stores. Its size prohibits it from developing long-term technical support relationships with its customers.  With that said, Apple is working closely with MacTown to ensure that Dayton Apple users have access to a complete range of consumer and business offerings, including the service specialties that are not part of Apple’s business model.

MacTown has EXCITING plans moving forward!  In strategic cooperation with Apple Representatives, MacTown has decided to relocate its storefront from the Greene Town Center to a new and exciting location south of Dayton.  “We are thrilled about our new change of venue and the way this move will allow us to remain professionally focused on what we do best, designing and implementing a range of product/service solutions that will complement and enhance the presence of Dayton’s new Apple retail store,” says MacTown leadership.

url-3

The Greene MacTown store closes March 31st.

MacTown’s relocation process will begin with the closing of our Greene Town Center store on March 31, 2014.  This closing will serve as a prelude to a temporary consolidation of business operations within our store on Kingsridge Drive, located behind the Dayton Mall.  Once this consolidation is complete, MacTown will immediately begin finalizing plans to close our Kingsridge store and move our entire operation to a new primary business location.

The projected summer opening of our new store south of Dayton will re-launch MacTown as the premiere Mac/Apple products support and services provider in the Miami Valley.  As it has in the past, MacTown will offer technology solutions such as site deployments, Mac-based platform management, configuration management, change management, systems administration, network management, home business setup, and repair for out-of-warranty Mac computers.  In addition to the Apple line, MacTown will also offer Meraki networking products, Adobe Creative Cloud team licenses, Dropbox for Business, Crashplan backup solutions, and Promise Raid storage solutions.

In other words, if you use Macs or other Apple products, MacTown is ready to build a long term relationship with you that will support your ability to use these products smarter and more efficiently.  In keeping with our distinguished eight year service history, MacTown will remain passionate about supporting and optimizing your Apple technology lifestyle in innovative and affordable ways that no other local provider can.

The above post from press release sent by MacTown.

Ready, Set Give! Crowdsource Funding For The Arts….

March 5, 2014 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

power2givePower2give.org is an online cultural marketplace connecting donors with projects they are passionate about.  Based on a crowd-funding model, Power2give is a flexible platform which can adapt to evolving trends in fundraising and make giving to the arts  more accessible.  The site allows arts organizations to post and promote projects in need of funding and invites donors to contribute directly to the projects that are most intriguing to them.

Culture Works goal in launching the site, made possible by a founding gift from the CareSource Foundation,  is to broaden the base of support for the arts by engaging and mobilizing new donors and funds. Key to Power2give’s success are matching funds, which provide an incentive for organizations and motivate people to donate through the site so that their gift will have the maximum impact.  For the initial launch the DP & L Foundation will match the first $50,000 in gifts.  The provision of matching funds enables CultureWorks to help arts groups reach thousands of new donors, generate a new stream of revenue for the local non-profits, increase the organizational capacity of these organizations, reach out to underserved communities and new organizations and help arts groups better tell their own stories.

How it works
With Power2give.org, anyone can make a difference!  Find creative projects focused on a personal cause, make a gift, watch your gift get matched by a sponsor, and share the project with friends and family.  Organizations post projects with funding needs up to $10,000 and invite donors to contribute to those projects most intriguing to them. Projects are listed on the site for a maximum of 90 days, or until they meet their financial goals.   All power2give donations are tax deductible.  There are currently 35 projects on the site and some need as little as $500 to achieve their goal. Whether it’s helping Musica purchase a piano, teaching the teacher filmmaking, or helping folks runaway to the circus, the projects are as varied as the residents of the Miami Valley.  Don’t take our word for it, find a project you like and help fund it!

Then leave us a comment telling us who you funded and why  and Dayton Most Metro.com will make a $100 donation to the organization with the most mentions by Friday, 3/ 7/14.

Local Love – A Mobile Boutique

March 5, 2014 By Nikki Nett 1 Comment

Love Local, Local Love

By now, we’re all familiar with the food trucks, bringing deliciousness to where ever our hearts desire. Of course, we’re also very familiar with the joys of online shopping. And, we’ve been touting the wonders of local business since we started here at Most Metro.

What if we told you there was a new venture bringing all of those things to life – in one spot? We know, mind = blown.

Welcome to Local Love A Roaming Boutique!

Boutique Shopping On Wheels

Boutique Shopping On Wheels

How It Started

Owner, Beth Presher, thought she found her “forever job”, one she loved. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she (like many) soon saw that forever job fall victim to downsizing. While it would have been easy to sit around and be sad, our girl Beth became inspired! She quickly embraced the spirit of entrepreneurship and combined a passion for fashion with the on trend concept of mobile retail. After a chance conversation with a friend of a friend, she began her research and unearthed a world of resources, including getting in contact with the American Mobile Retail Association. The Roaming Boutique concept was born.

Put The Local In Local Love

Not content to just roam out in the world stockpiling loads of cash, Beth felt inspired to give back to her community. She created a special line of t-shirts with proceeds going to a local non-profit doing fantastic things in the area. Bogg Ministries has a motto: “We love people, we feed people” and feed them they do! They load up their food truck and deliver essential meals to those that are in need. (Stay tuned for an upcoming story about these guys soon!). Just imagine the good you can do when someone asks you where you got that awesome Local Love t-shirt you’re wearing and you tell them that it is actually helping to feed dozens of people! Who knew being stylish could make such a difference?

Fashion Forward

So now you’re intrigued and ready to shop. You’re ready to fill your closet with the Spring essentials such as adorable sundresses, chevron tops, magnificent maxis and scarves for days. Where to begin? For the time being, you can click around until your heart is content at roamingboutique.com. There you’ll find some must-haves for the upcoming months.

The Truck Has It’s Big Debut

Now that you and your girlfriends have found something fun to wear while shopping their online boutique, get ready to head out for a night of fun! The “roaming” part of the Roaming Boutique makes it’s big debut on March 29th. It’s Girls Night Out at Victoria Theatre. The store on wheels will be there with exclusive finds you can’t find online. Do a little shopping then head in for one of the funniest musicals you’ll see in a long time!

We hope you join the adventure that Beth and Local Love A Roaming Boutique are about

to embark on. Here’s a sneak peek at some of their fun, flirty spring looks:

TEDxDayton Talks Now on YouTube

March 3, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

tedxIt was one of the most talked about events of the fall last year and 900 lucky folks were inspired by  some of the region’s brightest minds sparking deep discussion and an invitation to Date Your City.

And now finally for all those who missed it (or those of you who want to relive it), 27 videos from  TEDxDayton were posted to YouTube. Fans of the event can view the Dayton TEDx presenters  to choose from approximately two and a half hours of magical moments, inspired by the TED talks mantra of promoting “ideas worth spreading.”

“It’s been so exciting to experience this community’s overwhelming support for TEDxDayton,” said event co-chair Sean Creighton. “Dayton is a community full of passionate, inspired and engaged people, of dreamers and doers in the world. The way this community has embraced TEDxDayton really illustrates this.TEDxDayton-icon-250x250

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Planning is currently underway for the 2014 TEDxDayton event. Visit www.tedxdayton.com in April for updates and more details on what Dayton has in store for year two.

Dayton Area Residents Can Win Free Electricity for a year!

March 1, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Duke EnergyPaying less for your electric supply is great. Getting it for free is even better.

Duke Energy Retail – a lower-cost, market-priced electricity supplier in the Greater Dayton area – knows how high electric costs can be. To provide relief to four lucky Ohio residents, Duke Energy Retail is launching a new sweepstakes to give away free electricity for a year (a $2,000 value). One winner will be named each season – winter, spring, summer and fall.

“In addition to the sweepstakes, we  can help folks in the Dayton area save as much as $250 per year on supply portion of their electric bills just by chosing an alternate electric supplier,” said Duke Energy Retail Manager Kim Vogelgesang. “Paying less for your electric supply is a great thing, and the only thing that could be even better is getting it free for an entire year.”

To enter the sweepstakes, simply visit www.WinFreeEnergy.com, enter information and click on the link in a confirmation email. Up to 10 additional entries can be earned by sharing contest information with friends and family. Entrants will remain eligible for each drawing without the need to reenter each season.

The first winner will be chosen on March 25. Other drawings will take place on June 23, September 24 and December 15. Winners will be notified by email.  All Ohio residents who are customers of one of the state’s investor-owned utilities are eligible for the sweepstakes – and do not need to be a Duke Energy Retail customer. For complete rules and details about Duke Energy Retail’s Win Free Energy For A Year Sweepstakes, visit www.WinFreeEnergy.com. The sweepstakes relates to the electric supply portion of the utility bill, not to the delivery charges of the local utility.

New Space Shuttle Exhibit Open Feb 26th at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

February 24, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

140131-F-IO108-002National Museum of the U.S. Air Force visitors will be cleared for liftoff when the museum’s new Space Shuttle Exhibit opens to the public on Feb. 26.
The exhibit, which features NASA’s first Crew Compartment Trainer, allows visitors to experience the size and shape of an actual space shuttle orbiter by entering the payload bay and looking into the flight deck and mid-deck levels.

Following the arrival of the Crew Compartment trainer in summer 2012, work began on the design and construction of a full-scale representation of a NASA shuttle payload bay, engine, and tail sections, along with a 60-seat dedicated educational area or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Learning Node, by Display Dynamics, Inc. of Clayton, Ohio.

These portions of the exhibit, along with visitor observation and access structures, have been completed and the Teal Ruby satellite has been placed inside the payload bay. In addition, space-related videos will be available for viewing in the STEM Learning Node (when it is not in use for other scheduled programs).

Future plans call for the museum to continue populating the exhibit with additional artifacts such as space suits and provide interpretive information about topics such as astronauts, space science, living in space, and the Air Force’s role in space. Eventually, the exhibit will be moved to a new Space Gallery in the museum’s fourth building as part of a multi-phase, long-term expansion plan to house the museum’s growing space collection, as well as the Presidential Aircraft Gallery, Research & Development Gallery and Global Reach Gallery.

According to Museum Director Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jack Hudson, the exhibit is truly unique and will serve as an important educational tool.

“We are very pleased to open this one-of-a-kind Space Shuttle Exhibit and STEM Learning Node, and we thank Display Dynamics, Inc. for their hard work in helping us make these structures a reality,” Hudson said. “This exhibit will inspire us all to learn more about space and the role of our Air Force in space, and we hope that when you visit – whether that be in-person or online – it will inspire you, too, and become one of the vehicles that launches a new generation of Americans who are well-educated about space and STEM.”

Other components of the Space Shuttle Exhibit include two interactive space shuttle landing simulators, which were added last summer and allow visitors to test their skill at landing a space shuttle orbiter. Designed by Historic Space Systems of Danville, Ohio, the simulators are representative of a space shuttle commander’s and pilot’s stations, and feature a reproduction of the forward portion of the space shuttle flight deck with internal cockpit dimensions that replicate its actual size.

The Big Read is Back and It’s Wild!

February 20, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

THE BIG READclrAfter taking last year off, the Big Read community reading project is back and it’s wild, literally! Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail is the Big Read selection for 2014. This is the ninth year for the project which invites the community to read and talk about the same book. The Big Read runs March 10-April 19 with book discussions and other activities taking place throughout the Dayton area.

Wild is equal parts outdoor adventure tale and personal memoir of grief and healing by author Cheryl Strayed. It has been a New York Times Bestseller, an Oprah’s Book Club selection and is currently being made into a major motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon.

The Big Read kicks off on Sunday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m. in the Dayton Metro Library Auditorium with “A Hike on the Wild Side.” Local hikers Brent and Amy Anslinger will share a first-hand account of their own hike on the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. They’ll share experiences from their 2,650 mile journey on foot through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The Anslingers will also present their program on Monday, March 10, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Cox Arboretum MetroPark.

“If you enjoy a stroll in nature, a rugged hike in the mountains or just hearing about them from the comfort of a chair, the Anslingers will spark your imagination. Then read Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and talk about it with your friends and neighbors, ” said Jean Gaffney, Manager of Acquisition and Collection Development for the Dayton Metro Library and co-chair of The Big Read committee.

There will be many opportunities for readers to meet and talk about the book. Discussions are scheduled at public libraries as well as Books and Co., Wright State University, The University of Dayton, Brixx Ice Co., coffee shops and other venues.  The outdoor wrap-up event at Hills and Dales MetroPark, “The Big Read Hits the Trail,”  is scheduled for April 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.Events include outdoor hiking instructions, equipment vendors, food trucks, giveaways and more. Visit BigRead.org for a complete schedule of events, book reviews, author information and more.

“The Big Read is a great opportunity to get people reading and talking together,” said Jean Gaffney.  “This particular book gives us a lot to talk about. It appeals equally to outdoor adventurers and people looking for a book about personal reflection and redemption. The fact that it will soon be a feature film is a bonus!”

The Big Read is sponsored by Books and Co. and Friends of the Dayton Metro Library. Partners include: Dayton Metro Library, Franklin-Springboro Public Library, Greene County Public Library, Five Rivers MetroParks, National College, Preble County District Library, Project READ, Sinclair Community College, Tipp City Public Library, Troy-Miami County Public Library, University of Dayton, Washington-Centerville Public Library and Wright Memorial Public Library.

Anne Agoren and Izzi Bags to Headline A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance

February 15, 2014 By Dayton937 4 Comments

London born Anne Agoren of the Accessories Council, designer of Izzi Bags, Shorty Award Finalist, Media Personality, Fashion Writer, and NYC Socialite.

London born Anne Agoren, designer of Izzi Bags, Shorty Award Finalist, Media Personality, Fashion Writer, and NYC Socialite.

Trying to shine a spotlight on Dayton’s emerging fashion industry has been no easy task, whether it’s dealing with people who don’t take the industry seriously and dismiss it simply as vanity, to those who watch shows like Project Runway or America’s Next Top Model which just give a slight glimpse into how the industry really works, and those who simply don’t understand how embracing the fashion industry can be a huge boost for the local economy.  Yet for the past 2 years, there has been a core group of area professionals, business owners, community leaders, and fashion insiders who have been working diligently to educate the community about the positive impact the fashion industry could have on Dayton, from producing quality events and products to showcase local talent, and helping those who have dreams to be a part of the fashion industry to reach their goals, and together this network is called the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC also known simply as (DE-FI).

Since our official Launch Party in July 2013, we’ve grown in numbers, reach, and we took on a more direct approach and by direct I mean, we went straight to the fashion capital of the world New York City.  While I’m not at liberty to share the details of my work and experiences during the past two fashion week seasons, I can say that the Dayton area was blessed when Wright-Patt Air Force Base welcomed the family of Joshua Ladner to the area.  Not only, has his presence had an instant impact on the growth of Downtown Dayton with the opening of the very popular #HairJourney at Salon J Ladner but he also brings with him additional experience in the world of fashion!!  As a part of the Adam Project, Josh has spent the past few years being a part of almost every aspect of the production of New York Fashion Week from casting models for major designers, to show layouts, to working one on one with designers, and blogging.

Two weeks ago, Josh dropped a bombshell on me when he informed me that several high profile designer from NYC and London have committed to being a part of (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week taking place in May.  Well, last week Josh and I hit the streets of New York City during Fashion Week and while we were there, he introduced me to Anne Agoren, designer of Izzi Bags, Shorty Award Finalist,  and Fashion Writer.  Over dinner at one of NYC most posh restaurants the Rogue Tomate, Josh and I shared the vision, direction, and work of (DE-FI) with Anne and colleague Sony Loren. To sum up the night, it ended with Anne and Sony saying they are all in and committed to not only showcasing during (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week but assisting with the of planning events!!

I wanted to give Anne a proper introduction to the people of Dayton and the Miami Valley areas and what better way to get to know someone than a Q & A session? So without further ado, introducing the newest member of Team (DE-FI) Anne Agoren!!

Q: Who is Anne Agoren?  You came from humble beginnings and you are now a well-respected designer who takes the time to give back, why is giving back so important to you and why is it important for notable people like yourself to lend a hand to organizations like (DE-FI)?

A:  Every day I get up and am thankful for who I am, where I am, and the opportunities that have been given to me. It has not been an easy journey, I have struggled through much heartbreak from two divorces, but been blessed with 3 fabulous boys, moved continents 3 times, had to learn another language just to survive. I had it all, lost it, and now trying once again to rebuild. When you suffer a knock back you just have to put on your big girl panties, put on your lipstick, and carry on.

Failure is not an option for me. Don’t think for one minute I am a hard faced business woman, I cry all the time when I am frustrated, when I am sad, when I am happy and that’s not a bad thing. I get very hurt by other people’s opinion and I wish sometimes I could let it run down my back as they say, but I am human, have feelings and can’t. The most important thing is to pick yourself up, brush yourself down and carry on to fight another day.

I really believe I have had the most amazing opportunities given to me, I have traveled all over the world and I want to help those that are less fortunate or who need a break. Let’s face it without a little bit of help from others the world can be a difficult place to be.

Q: How did you get your start in the fashion industry?

Izzi Bags are all hand made in Turkey. However, Anne is currently looking to bring production of Izzi Bags to the U.S.

Izzi Bags are all hand made in Turkey. However, Anne is currently looking to bring production of Izzi Bags to the U.S.

A:  When I got divorced I went to live in Cyprus, the Northern part which belongs to Turkey, I could not speak the language, I had no family or friends there and so I took a job working for a large European Design House overseeing the design, pattern making, cutting, stitching, packing and shipping. Can you imagine how hard that was when I couldn’t even communicate for over 6 months with a factory of over 300?

I went to school to learn to speak Turkish and I could actually say ” these buttons are not lined up” before I could order a glass of wine. This experience gave me the basis of what was to come in the following years. I owe a lot to the patient Turkish people who taught me well and as you can imagine I still have difficulty in keeping my hands by my sides because this was the only form of communication I had during the early stages of my fashion years. I also tend to talk loudly when I get excited about something, for some reason I believed the louder I spoke one day they would understand me!

Q:   Who were your influences personally and professionally?

A:  Professionally, I want to say the biggest influence over my career is probably Coco Chanel, she was a chic, sophisticated lady who never let the outside world get to her, she believed in what she did and ignored those that doubted her. I learned that lesson from her, one of her most famous quotations stands out for me “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”.

Personally, the person that has influenced me the most is my mother, when I was a child I would sit in her closet, with the door closed, in the dark, I would hold her leather handbags, I would caress them, smell the leather and I would dream that I was walking along Bond Street in London carrying one of her bags that they were in fact mine. When I used to leave the closet I would always mumble to the bags… “One day you will be mine”.

But the one person that has kept me going is my son, Steven, He had a rare form of cancer that only hits men, when I got the call from him, there are no words to describe that feeling for a mother and I can’t even begin to tell you what we as a family went through. But today I am so blessed, Thanks be to God that he is now cancer free, for that reason I get up every day and know that whatever is thrown at me I can get through it.

Q: What is Izzi Bags?  Who is your target market, and when people think Izzi Bags what is the image that you want people to see or represent?

A: Izzi bag was created because like most women, I had and still have a great passion for handbags and every single woman I know looks for something different when buying one. I know that when you purchase your first Izzi bag you will come to understand how much love and respect we have put into each and everyone’s creation. As they are all hand crafted using a woven technology, from the finest leather available every single piece in the collection becomes slightly individual.  My target market?  Well, my answer to anyone that ask’s me that question is quite simply this “I had you in mind when I first put my pencil on the sketch pad”.

Q: Where are Izzi Bags currently produced?

Anne Interviews Tim Gunn of Project Runway on the Red Carpet for Ace Awards

Anne Interviews Tim Gunn of Project Runway on the Red Carpet for Ace Awards

A: As my journey in fashion began in Turkey, this is currently where they are made, but we are now working with other manufacturer’s in sampling to try and bring the production closer to home in the USA.

Q: Why is it so important for Fashion to be embraced in smaller markets like Dayton, OH?  Why do you think the Midwest in general has gone untapped or overlooked by the Fashion industry?

A: Just because women or men for that matter do not live in Milan, London, Paris or New York should not mean they do not care about fashion and I believe that there are up and coming designers across the world in the smallest of villages who need to be embraced by the industry. I am all for helping, mentoring and speaking out to help these individuals. It does not matter what age you are, look at me I was over 40 before one Izzi bag was ever sold in the market place. I do not think I can generalize and say the “Midwest” has been untapped, I think across the world there are thousands of towns and areas that are in the same boat and it’s about time we opened the doors of opportunity to all.

Q: What were some of the struggles you faced as an emerging designer and what do you consider to be your “Big Break” that took you from being an emerging designer to an established designer?

A:  For me the biggest struggle was getting buyers to see me, When I had my samples ready I would go by myself and knock on doors, I would go again and again and again. It was soul destroying when they sent me away. Having worked for a large company that is known worldwide I was suddenly there on my own. I could not afford a branding agent, a publicist or any help. I was the designer, the salesman, the tea maker.

The biggest break for me was when I was nominated and then a finalist at the Shorty Awards in New York. Bare in mind that at the time this happened to me was right at the beginning of twitter and there were only 17 million people on it compared with today 218 million!!!!! There I was a small brand in the final 6, no Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, No Chanel, No Hermes, no Prada, No Gucci…that in itself was a major achievement and the Wall Street Journal even mentioned me in their post about the event.

The next morning my telephone rang off the hook, I was asked to talk at breakfasts, lunches, dinners about how I used Social Media to build a brand. From there I opened my second company that now teaches, advises and executes social media for small brands, large worldwide brands and celebrities. I really believe that you never know what tomorrow holds. My mother always says when one door closes you must circle the house to see which window is ajar.

Social Media has played a big part in building my brand, it has enabled me to have a world platform, how difficult it was years ago to get your name known on the other side of the world. Now in 140 characters or less you can communicate in a split second with someone 5000 miles away or in your own back yard!

Q: There are so many misconceptions about what the Fashion Industry is or what it represents, if there was one myth about the fashion industry that you could debunk what would it be and why?

Anne interviewing Constance White, former Editor in Chief of Essence Magazine at the Ace Awards.

Anne interviewing Constance White, former Editor in Chief of Essence Magazine at the Ace Awards.

A:  One of the biggest misconceptions about fashion is that it costs a lot to look good…. that is rubbish, you can buy a few staple items and switch them around, add accessories and make the outfit look like a million dollars. These days a lot of the high street brands reel out season after season collections that resemble designer wear. Oscar Wilde once opined that “fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months”. I disagree because I have pieces in my closet older than my 28 year old son and they are now called ‘vintage’ and worth more than the pieces I bought last week.

Q: What is the biggest mistake that most people make when trying to get their start in the industry?

A: Everybody thinks they are a  designer they think it is so easy to just create a brand and run with it. It takes a lot of dedication, a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It really is not about how much money it takes, it is really about belief. I spent many nights without sleep, worrying would the industry and members of the public like my designs would they believe in me? It is easy to think we can all start our journey as Coach, LVMH or Gucci but in reality you must start small, build your brand and grow.

Q: You’ve had the opportunity to speak one on one with some of Fashion’s most elite designers and personalities(Including Diane Von Furstenberg head of the Council for Fashion Designers of America) , how do you prepare yourself for their interviews and have you ever asked them for their advice or keys to their success?  If so what was the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: I remember interviewing Christian Louboutin on the Red Carpet just over a year ago and I have to tell you that nothing could have prepared me for that opportunity. I seriously was like a giggly little school girl, I did not want the moment to pass. Izzi even bought me a pair of shoes to wear for the occasion which cost nearly $1000. I want you to know that was madness but Louboutin was impressed I was wearing them, but to be honest as soon as he passed by I took them off as they were so uncomfortable. I have never asked a celebrity or designer for their advice because I believe we are all in charge of our own destiny.

Q: What are you most excited about in terms of your participation and your role in helping to produce (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week?

A: I am excited for the (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week mainly as it is my chance to help you make a mark on the world’s fashion stage, I am really looking forward to being able to show that it does not matter how old you are, from what background you come from, you can achieve what you want with a little determination. I want to be able to convey my message to the young and old alike it is never too late and you are never too old to make it in life. I am really excited to walk on the runway in the Stylish Mom Show with my son a cancer survivor and I am really blessed that God spared him. He is an inspiration to all of us. Seeing Izzi bags on the runway will reduce me to tears, here I go again!

Q: What advice do you have for emerging designers ready to make their mark in the industry?

A: I have only two things to say to them: Believe in what you do and grow skin as thick as an elephant you are going to need it.
