Peerless: A teen twist on Macbeth, Cut-Throat Tactics reign Supreme

April 21, 2024 By Dayton937

What would you do to get into your dream college? For twins M and L, the answer is…anything. In this Macbeth-inspired satire, twins M and L’s dark and hilarious quest for college admission becomes a cut-throat exploration of ambition and high school drama.

Wells, The Human Race Theatre Company’s Artistic Director. “In addition, we are thrilled to be showcasing some of the fantastic talent emerging out of our SW Ohio training programs.”

Resident Artist and Artistic Director of Wright State University’s theatre program Marya Spring Cordes directs. The cast features current Cincinnati College of Music students Dinithi Fernando and Palini Sunkara as the twins, recent Wright State alum Matthew Shanahan (D and D’s Brother) and Sydney Freihofer (Dirty Girl/Preppy Girl), and University of Cincinnati grad Dominique Owen as BF.

Food Truck Spotlight: Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew

April 19, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

James and Lynne Mowery

Lynne Mowery first discovered Cold Brew Coffee in 2018. “From the time we first learned about cold brew to the time we purchased our brick and mortar we visited roughly 350 coffee shops in the midwest.  We decided we wanted to bring a consistent, cold artisan crafted cold brew to the public.

James and Lynne Mowery, hosted the ribbon-cutting on July 31 Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew officially opened August 1, 2020. The brick and mortar location is where they brew and serves as a carry out for

644 N. Broad St. in Fairborn

customers to take our packaged brew with them to home, work, camping, meetings, parties etc. Customers wanted us to offer our cold brew by the glass, which was also a goal of ours, and in August 2021 the BARge I (our original draft trailer) began voyages around the Miami Valley.  At the beginning of the 2023 Food Truck season the BARge II was launched which allowed us to have a more diverse drink menu.”

What are your most popular sellers?
Caramel Creek and White Rapids are 2 of our most popular lattes. Any of our cold brews straight with the nitro infusion, which we call River Rushed, are popular as well. We regularly have 4 brews available including a decaf and a super caffeinated option. Customers are often surprised by how good our cold brew is without creamers and syrups.  We also have the feasibility to serve our cold brew heated for those who only prefer hot coffee.
For the non-coffee drinkers, the Fifty5 Rivers BARge offers Riverade (lemonade–still or nitro, straight or flavored). Our Strawberry Rose Riverade (River Rushed) or one of our Storm Series Riverades (flavored nitro Riverade with creamer) such as our Tranquil Tempest and Cinnamon Cyclone are sought after by many regular customers. Sparkling Flavored Water and Hot Chocolate are a favorite among young children. For the tea lovers we offer River Chilled Black Tea (still or sparkling), along with tea lattes.  We’re excited to launch new tea options for this year with the addition of a green tea.
In the fall months we also have a variety of Apple Cider beverages (hot or cold) like the Apple Caramel Cove, and the Apple Chaider Falls which are seasonal favorites!!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your business?
Embrace the “pivot”, always be willing to adapt.
Where do you dine out when you have some time off?
Anywhere that is a small local establishment, from other food trucks to restaurants. We’re huge fans of local breweries and coffee shops! We love to support other small businesses.

Upcoming Places to find Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew

4/21 10am – 2pm –  Barn Brunch at the Heights

4/25 4- 8pm – Hunger Days Food Truck Rallies

5/25 – 5-9pm Dayton Pizza Fest, Yellow Cab

Welcome Our Honor Flight Veterans Home April 20th

April 16, 2024 By Dayton937

Honor Flight Network is a national nonprofit organization comprised of independent hubs working together to achieve the Honor Flight mission. We have the enormous privilege of showing our nation’s veterans the appreciation and honor they deserve.

Participation in an Honor Flight trip gives veterans the opportunity to share this momentous occasion with other comrades, remember the fallen, and share their stories and experiences with other veterans. Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations to our organization.

While initially focused on America’s World War II veterans, Honor Flight Network has expanded its mission to include those who served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The Honor Flight TLC program also honors veterans of any service era who are critically ill.

The first Honor Flight  of 2024 for Dayton is quickly approaching! We are in need of the publics help! You’re invited to help us Welcome Home Veterans from the Honor Flight Trip! Many of these Veterans did not receive a Homecoming when the arrived back in the states from serving overseas. We are here to make up for that and show them their service and sacrifice for this great country is appreciated.

Join us for the Honor Flight Dayton homecoming on April 20th. Help show our appreciation to these men and women for the sacrifice they made for our country by coming to the airport to greet the flight when we return.
The flight lands at ~ 8:15pm. You have two options to welcome home our veterans:

1) Joint us near the airline ticket counters and clap and cheer as we come out at the end of the evening. There will be the AF Band of Flight and Young Marines/JROTC/Civil Air Patrol units out there as well. This is a great way to welcome our veterans back.
2) Welcome us at the gate. In order to do this, you must be get your gate pass from American Airlines before 7:30pm in order to get through TSA before it closes. You will need a government issued picture ID to get through security. Children under 13 will not need an ID.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you choose to go upstairs you must remain upstairs until after the veterans have exited the secured area. This will be strictly enforced.
Honor Flight representatives will be in the gate area with instructions, information and will be available to answer any questions. Announcements in the gate area will begin around 7:00pm.
Questions concerning the homecoming can be directed to [email protected] or contacting HFD’s lead coordinator for this event – LaTisha Fay (937) 765-1407.

Alice Cooper’s Too Close For Comfort Tour at The Rose

April 15, 2024 By Dayton937

Get ready for a night of shock and rock that will haunt your dreams.  Legendary rocker Alice Cooper has announced additional dates for the Too Close For Comfort Tour, including a highly anticipated return to Rose Music Center at The Heights on Tuesday, August 6.

Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock.  Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

With a schedule that includes six months each year on the road, Alice Cooper brings his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where CNN can present real life shocking images.

Cooper was born in Detroit Michigan and moved to Phoenix with his family.  The Alice Cooper band formed while they were all in high school in Phoenix, and was discovered in 1969 by Frank Zappa in Los Angeles, where he signed them to his record label.  Their collaboration with young record producer Bob Ezrin led to the break-through third album “Love It to Death” which hit the charts in 1971, followed by “Killer,” “School’s Out,” ”Billion Dollar Babies,” and “Muscle of Love.”  Each new album release was accompanied by a bigger and more elaborate touring stage show.  1974 saw the release of a “Greatest Hits” album, and then Cooper, in 1975, released his first solo album, “Welcome to My Nightmare” in 1975, accompanied by the legendary groundbreaking theatrical Welcome to My Nightmare concert tour.

Associated with that album and  tour was the ground-breaking network TV special Alice Cooper: The Nightmare.  Other film and television appearances include The Muppet Show, Mae West’s last film Sextette, Roadie, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearst Club Band and appearances on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and  Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow Show.  The original band also made an appearance in the movie Diary of a Mad Housewife in 1979, filmed the full-length feature film Good To See You Again Alice Cooper, and Alice appeared in a 1972 episode of The Snoop Sisters.

Alice’s solo career skyrocketed in the late 1970’s, with a succession of hit singles, including “You & Me,” and classic albums, including “Lace And Whiskey” and “From The Inside,” and bigger and even more elaborate concert tours.

In the ‘80’s Cooper explored different sounds, highlighted by the new wavish album “Flush The Fashion,”  the heavy metal “Constrictor” and “Raise Your Fist And Yell,” and then 1989’s  melodic hard rock album “Trash,” which featured the massive hit single “Poison” and became his biggest selling album and single worldwide.  During this period Alice also appeared in the horror films Monster Dog and John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, and recorded songs for the soundtracks to Roadie, Class of 1984, Friday the 13 Part VI:  Jason Lives and Wes Craven’s Shocker.

Cooper’s most memorable movie appearance was as himself in Wayne’s World in 1991.  He also played (fittingly) Freddy Krueger’s wicked step-father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, and appeared on Gene Wilder’s TV series Something Wilder  as well as on That ‘70’s Show.  The 90’s also saw the release of the albums “Hey Stoopid,” “The Last Temptation,” and “Fistful of Alice,” a live album.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10AM on Friday, April 19 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office. Tickets will run from $53 – $83 for this show.

Trampled by Turtles Coming To The Rose

April 15, 2024 By Dayton937

Duluth-native sextet fusing bluegrass, folk and rock, Trampled by Turtles will bring their signature sound to Huber Heights, OH this summer for their first-ever performance at Rose Music Center at The Heights on Friday, August 16.  Waterville, OH indie-folk trio Oliver Hazard will join as support.

TRAMPLED BY TURTLES

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who’d ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn’t rely on amplification. Simonett hadn’t played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who’d previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

Trampled by Turtles released their first record, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004. In a genre steeped in tradition, the album stood out for its contemporary sound, essentially bridging the gap between the bandmates’ background in rock music and their new acoustic leanings. Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) explored a similar sound, but it wasn’t until 2008 and the band’s fourth release, Duluth, that Trampled by Turtles received recognition by the bluegrass community. Duluth peaked at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart and paved the way for a number of festival appearances. When Palomino arrived in 2010, it was met with an even greater response, debuting at the top of the bluegrass chart and remaining in the Top Ten for more than a year. Two years later, their crossover appeal landed them at number 32 on the Billboard 200 pop charts upon the release of their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they began showing up at Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The official concert album, Live at First Avenue, followed in 2013, recorded at Minnesota’s most famous venue. A year later, the band returned with the darker-toned Wild Animals, which bettered its studio predecessor on the album charts, reaching number 29 on Billboard. Countless tours with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 saw the release of the band’s latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

OLIVER HAZARD

The story of Waterville, OH indie-folk trio Oliver Hazard – Michael Belazis (vocals, guitar) and Devin East (vocals, guitar), joined by Nate Miner (keys, vocals) – is the digital age’s version of classic band mythmaking. One member of the band came home to Ohio after leading camping trips in California and decided to make an album with two childhood friends. They won a Facebook raffle to record one song at a studio. Instead, they played their whole album straight through once, resulting in their debut LP 34 N River (2018). The Fader called the album a “folk-pop masterpiece” and the band was booked at Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam shortly thereafter. In 2019, the band released their 6 track EP, The Flood, which Billboard called a “souvenir.” This brings the band to their sophomore, self-titled album (July 2023), featuring music from the band’s recent Northern Lights EP, plus five additional songs.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10AM on Friday, April 19 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office and range from $39.50 – $59.50.

Contemporary Japanese Ceramics now on display at DAI

April 13, 2024 By Dayton937

Captivating Clay: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from the Horvitz Collection

The new exhibition opens April 13th and will run through September 22nd.

Japanese ceramic artists are building on centuries of tradition and taking the art in dynamic and new directions. They are exploring the potential of clay to create both functional and abstract sculptural forms with an incredible range of surface textures and decoration. The aesthetic sensibilities are varied, from rough and imperfect to detailed and refined, but all show a mastery of the craft.

Drawn from the renowned collection of Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz—including recent gifts from them to the museum—this exhibition presents more than thirty artworks spanning eight decades. Traditionally a craft restricted to men, in recent years women have become some of the leading voices in the field and several examples are included.

Artists range from innovative pioneers in the twentieth century, several designated as Living National Treasures in Japan, to emerging, younger artists. Interspersed are examples from the DAI’s collection of historic Japanese ceramics. Across 2,000 years, these speak to the long history of the art in the island nation and their continued inspiration for artists today.

Herer are the descriptions of the pictured pieces in a clockwise order.

Mann and her parents at the opening of their first locatoin.

General Manager T’Aira Scott explains “Juicing is a lifestyle. Having a healthy lifestyle is important because we are what we eat. Eating live food is what’s best for our live bodies.  All my life, I have watched my parents juice and eat healthy and I have adopted lots of their lifestyles in my own home with my husband and children. I believe it is important to share with others because we want to see people happy and healthy and if we have some knowledge on how to do so, why not share?”

The grand opening celebration is this Saturday and Sunday and the first 100 patrons each day will receive a FREE water bottle, and other door prizes.   They will be open Saturday from noon to 9 pm and Sunday from 3 to 9 pm.

Expect to find juices, fruit smoothies and selections from their menu including vegan chicken burgers and vegetarian chili as well as turkey and salmon burgers.  There will also be cake pops from Scott’s other business Sweetly Dipped, a home bakery that features Cake Pops, Cake sickles and Chocolate Covered Sweets.

T’Aira Scott

Scott’s personal favorite items from the menu are “the vegetarian chilli, ora mae’s fried potatoes, and the incredible hulk. A lot of these food items I grew up on so I really can say that all of them are very delicious.”  Scott began working for the family business in hight school and she now oversees all three locations.

Here’s the menu:

Right now they have 3 power shots – a Ginger shot, wheatgrass shot, and the wellness shot.
Mann explains that ginger is a key ingredient for the wellness shot and of course the ginger shot. Ginger is good for inflammation and nausea, bloating, and chemotherapy among other great benefits. Research has shown that ginger takes the edge off after chemo and is better than some anti-nausea medications.
Wheatgrass is good for energy, skin, and your immune system. Sometimes we have the wheatgrass and juice it with garlic to help combat colds and help lower your blood pressure among other health benefits. Just make sure you stay back from everyone’s face when you have that combo or a pack of mints!
The five benefits for wheatgrass are:
1.Helps cleanse and detoxify your blood.

3. assist in digestion.
4. helps metabolize energy and fat.

‘My, Oh My!’ Tina is a Powerhouse!

April 11, 2024 By Joshua Stucky

Tina, the Musical, packs so much energy, you’ll be exhausted just watching it. And it’s not all upbeat and bouncy. The show takes us through Tina’s life and times. Nothing is left to the imagination, and at times, you will feel the heartache and heartbreak that Tina Turner endured. From the time the curtain rises, we get a sense that there’s a lot to Tina….and from her early life as Anna Mae Bullock, to her brilliant rise to stardom as a single act, we get to cheer her on.

The perseverance, the passion and the push forward that she models is a good lesson for everyone. For most of us. we know the story…we saw the incredible movie that opened the door on Tina’s struggles and successes. But, as is always the. case, the stage brings an intimacy. You are there. At no other time in the musical is that more apparent then the scene right before intermission. ‘I Don’t Wanna Fight’ plays as Tina sees her way out. So Satisfying.

The musical features all the songs you know and love from Tina’s anthology and Ike’s as well. Most of the songs fit perfectly with the story’s progression (although ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ pops in at a strange time.)

It’s really in the final moments of the actual show that you feel the audience sit-up as if to say, ‘There’s Tina!’ Do yourself a favor and hang in there after that curtain falls…you’ll thank me. You will be on your feet!

The cast is superb. Big, bellowing voices, high kicking dancers and acting that is more than run of the mill convincing. You feel it.

There are some magic moments, like  ‘Let’s Stay Together’ and how it was fits in the script, and I really loved ‘River Deep, Mountain High,’ because it was pure, and poppy! OH, and of. course ‘Proud Mary!’ need I say anything about that quintessential favorite.

Faced with an unloving mother, a pompous husband and a world that wasn’t exactly ready for the star that was Tina Turner, the show is so incredibly redeeming, and, for the record, Tina will remain an inspiration to us all!

Crowed House “Teenage Summer” Tour Coming to The Rosse

April 11, 2024 By Dayton937

Multi-platinum selling rock band Crowded House have released their new single “Teenage Summer” off the eighth studio album Gravity Stairs which will be released May 31 via BMG. The band also announced a 2024 North American headline tour – Gravity Stairs Tour – in support of the new album. The tour will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH for a performance at Rose Music Center at The Heights on Tuesday, September 10.

Produced by the band with Steven Schram (Paul Kelly, San Cisco), Gravity Stairs shows Crowded House’s current incarnation featuring Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, Mitchell Froom, Elroy Finn and Liam Finn.

The new single, played on stage in recent shows and formerly known as “Life’s Imitation” is now curiously renamed “Teenage Summer.” As Neil explains “My grandson Manaia told me “Teenage Summer” was one of his favorite songs. He’d identified the peak moment in the song and a light went on. It’s that simple, the children must be heard.”

Speaking about the album title Gravity Stairs, Neil says the name was inspired by an unnaturally heavy stone staircase near where Finn vacations. “The Gravity Stairs are symbolic of the struggle to ascend, acknowledging the opposing forces of weight on the mechanics of living. It’s an act of will every day.”

Crowded House have sold over 15 million records worldwide as well as earning a Brit Award, 13 Australian ARIA Awards and an MTV VMA, the band have generated billions of streams, consistently sold-out tours on multiple continents and have been captivating audiences for nearly four decades. Originally founded by Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, and the late Paul Hester, the group’s self-titled debut in 1986 went platinum, uplifted by worldwide smashes “Something So Strong” and “Don’t Dream It’s Over” which has been covered by everyone from Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande to U2, among others.

In 1996, the group delivered a legendary performance to an audience of over 150,000 on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, beginning a hiatus that finished in the wake of Paul’s passing in 2005. This led to albums Time on Earth (2007) and Intriguer (2010) and a return to the Sydney Opera House for three unforgettable nights. 2018 saw Neil join Fleetwood Mac as a full-time member, canvasing the globe on a massive world tour. Two years later, he and Nick led another era of Crowded House, forming the band’s current line-up. They issued their first full-length offering in eleven years, the unanimously acclaimed Dreamers Are Waiting (2021) and the band leapt into a rapturous world tour in support. From joining his brother Tim in the New Wave favorites Split Enz to leading Crowded House to his numerous solo efforts, Neil’s varied body of work is connected by his knack for penning meticulous, indelible melodies and impressionistic lyrics that demand multiple listens. It’s earned him devoted fans all over the globe.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10AM on Friday, April 19 at Ticketmaster.com and the Rose Music Center Box Office.

About Rotary

Rotary is an international membership organization made up of diverse groups of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Being a member is an opportunity to take action and make a difference.

About Dayton Rotary:

The Rotary Club of Dayton is a fellowship of over 200 diverse business and professional leaders who commit their time and talent to staying informed and serving the club, the community and the world.

The Rotary club of Dayton was organized May 27, 1912 and was chartered as the 47th club of Rotary International on June 2, 1913.

Orville Wright, the inventor of flight, was an early member of the Rotary Club of Dayton. Dayton Rotarians have witnessed both the Wright Flyer’s first flight and moon landings. We have taken the automobile from an open carriage, to efficient battery-operated vehicles. We have witnessed partyline telephones go to hand-held wireless devices carried by everyone. Entertainment went from radio to the television to computers that are small enough to fit in our purse or pocket and carry on planes.

The Rotary Club of Dayton was once a business-only club that mirrored Paul Harris’s thinking of what Rotary should be: Businessmen learning about each other’s business, doing business with each other based on a foundation of trust.

The Rotary Club of Dayton today is a group of current and future leaders who work in government, in the corporate world or in the not-for-profit world while we focus on building productive relationships and serving our community. We are individuals from different genders, different races, different backgrounds, and different religions. And we are resilient! During COVID we continued to meet via zoom and now every Monday over lunch we do a hybrid meeting, in person at Sinclair College as well as over zoom.

Flyboy’s Deli Announces Closing

April 9, 2024 By Dayton937

Posted today on their Facebook Page:

Flyboys Deli

“Dear valued customers and friends of Flyboy’s:

It is with sincere gratitude and a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Flyboy’s Deli in Oakwood. This has been a very difficult and emotional decision and we are so sad to say goodbye after 11 years. As some of you may already know, the family has been going through very difficult times recently. Unice, one of the two owners, passed away after a tough battle with cancer earlier this year. Steve, her husband and the other owner, suffered a major stroke last year and is still recovering in a long-term care facility. Given the circumstances, the family has reached a decision to close Flyboy’s. We want to assure you that this decision was not taken lightly. Our last day will be Saturday, April 20.
Our customers have been the greatest treasures of Flyboy’s. On Steve, Unice, and all staff’s behalf, we just want to say THANK YOU for all your incredible support during the 11 years. Oakwood is such a special community – warm and welcoming neighbors, dedicated small business owners, and a safe neighborhood for families to grow. It has truly been an honor to serve this community. We share so many great memories with this community (weddings, graduations, promotions, birthdays, just to name a few), and those memories will always be in our hearts.
We would also like to thank our staff, past and present, for all the hard work and efforts throughout the years. We were incredibly lucky to have the most committed and talented staff here at Flyboy’s. It’s impossible to express the deep gratitude we have for all of you. Thank you for being part of the Flyboy’s family, and we will forever be grateful.
Once again, thank you for all your support, and we wish you all the best!
Sincerely,
The Flyboy’s Family”
