We also have a wide variety of non-authentic dishes as well, from Stir-fried Lo Mein to Rice Dishes, even an entire page of Vegetarian dishes to choose from.”

A Third Warped Wing Location Announced
Warped Wing Brewing Company, headquartered in Downtown Dayton, Ohio, is excited to announce plans for a new Brewery and Taproom location
in Mason, Ohio at 5650 Tylersville Rd (at the corner of 42 and Tylersville Rd). Warped Wing Mason is planned to open in Fall 2021. The 13,000 square foot facility will boast a large taproom with outdoor biergarten, small pilot brewing system, and eventually a flexible event space. Initially, there will be a focus on opening the main dining area and patio space, with expanded seating and private rental options to be developed at a later time.

“This new site has a rich history in the Mason community and the building itself has such a unique story. We want to pay homage to that history while bringing some new life to the space,” said Nick Bowman, co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing. “We are excited to join the Mason community and be part of its growing brewery scene,” said Bowman.
“Our plan is to put a small pilot brewing system into the Rathskeller (basement) of the building. The size is TBD as we have not yet finished contracting it. I believe we are going to focus on making “high gravity” or stronger beers on it, allowing us to focus on other styles at the Springboro plant,” said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster. “Having said that, there really are no rules and we will make what makes sense at the time at either location. In the end, it just gives us that much more flexibility in what we do on the pilot systems,” said Haggerty.
The new facility will not only feature a small pilot brewing system, beers on tap, 6pk cans and bottles to go, but will also offer a full service dining experience similar to that of the Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery located in Springboro, Ohio.
“Our food program getting started will focus on smoked meats. We do traditional BBQ with classic housemade sides inspired by BBQ all over the country but we are not just a BBQ place as we are constantly experimenting with other ways to use smoked meats in non-traditional ways, from tacos to poutine. We have a focus on scratch-made sides and the highest quality ingredients,” said Erin O’Neill, Culinary Director & General Manager of Retail Operations. O’Neill adds, “One of my favorite things about our culinary program is how each location takes on its
own personality over time and we get to express that personality through our food specials and seasonal menu changes. From our signature bison bacon burger and our smoked wings, to our unique appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and tacos, we truly feel we have something for everyone.”’
With a unique focus on smoked and beer-infused foods, the new taproom will bring an exciting menu to complement Warped Wing’s robust beer selection. Other libations available in the Taproom will include hard cider, wine, and a spirits menu with a focus on specialty cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic options like mocktails and housemade sodas.
Warped Wing is now in the process of posting and interviewing for positions at the new Warped Wing Mason location. Please visit warpedwing.com/careers for more information.
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. Adding 2nd Location
On Saturday, Crooked Handle Brewing Company announced plans to open a second brewpub in downtown Piqua. The project will transform an existing 10,000 square foot building to include a brewery, warehouse style beer hall, a full kitchen, an event space, and an outdoor biergarten overlooking Piqua’s emerging Lock Nine Park.
The adaptive reuse project was announced at the “Down A River – Down A Beer” event which is held annually along the Great Miami Riverway in Piqua. City of Piqua Community and Economic Development Director Chris Schmiesing made the announcement commenting, “Crooked Handle Brewing Company is a first-class operation that offers quality food, drinks and entertainment in a relaxing atmosphere, and we are extremely excited to welcome them to our community.”
Crooked Handle Brewing Company will be purchasing the property located at 123 N. Main Street from Piqua Granite and Marble Company. The brick structure dates back to the early 1900’s, and was previously occupied by motorcycle and car dealerships and numerous other uses. The new plans for the building call for the removal of various partitions and equipment to highlight the historic character of the building. The new configuration of the building will include two primary spaces, one for dining and the other for special events. The Warehouse Beer Hall will be located in the more industrial former garage space and will be the primary drinking and dining area and feature views of the brewery operations and provide access to the extensive patio areas overlooking the Lock Nine Park. The former display area, dubbed the Showroom, features large windows along the Main Street frontage and will function as a flexible space that can accommodate a variety of special event types. A full-service kitchen will be centrally located between the two public spaces with an order and pickup window easily accessible to both sides. The exterior of the building will feature attractive signage, a new entry inviting guests into the brewpub and a biergarten covered by a trellis fabricated from a dismantled gantry crane formerly used by the monument business.

Crooked Handle Brewing Company opened its first location in December of 2015 in Springboro Ohio, where they produce award winning craft beers, and offer a premium selection of wines, ciders, spirits, signature cocktails, and live music. In 2020 CHBC added a full kitchen that is now serving a menu of made from scratch pub fare. The Piqua location will provide similar and expanded offerings along with the Showroom being available to rent for special events.
Crooked Handle Brewing Company is owned by Jason and Kristy Moore, and Jeff and Emily Pedro. When asked what attracted them to Piqua they commented, “The timing was right. We really like the vision for the redevelopment of the downtown riverfront, and the location is ideal for what we offer. We see a real opportunity in Piqua and are excited to be a part of what is happening in the community.”

The design team for the project includes Gamble Associates, PorterFanna Architecture, Booker Design Collaborative, Omloop and Choice One Engineering. Urban Improvement Company (UIC) is the development consultant and Denligner Construction will serve as the general contractor for the project. The renovation work is expected to begin fall 2021 and be complete by late summer 2022.

Crazy King Burrito Now Open in Fairborn
It’s the very first US franchise for this Mexican based burrito eatery. Crazy King Burrito opened quietly last Friday in the strip mall across from Wright State University, that also houses Texas Road House, One Eyed Jacks and Bob Evans, but we don’t think they’ll keep it quiet for long! With 12 burrito’s on the menu, from a simple bean and cheese, to the Tinga de Poll0 (shredded chicken), a Loco Veggie, and the signature Crazy King-a surf & turf combo with asada and shrimp, they range in price from $4-12. All menu items can also be served as a bowl instead of burrito. They feature bottled Jarrito soda’s in pineapple, orang mandarin, mango, strawberry, apple and watermelon, as well as coca-cola products and a tasty Horchata Rick drink with an almond/cinnamon finish. For dessert they offer a key lime flavored Mexican Ice Box Cake.

Using the best family recipes that were passed down from generation to generation, founders Jaime and Haidee Gonzalez, opened a small restaurant on the beautiful island of Cozumel in 2012 that still prospers to this day! Unlike other Mexican restaurants, their burrito recipes are exactly the same as what they served in our original hometown. 100% authentic, from our home to yours! Local franchise owners DeShawn Davis, who grew up in his families Cincinnati soul food restaurant and his business partner Walter Jones were just so impressed with the food and customer service, Davis said, “it was just a no-brainer for us to decide to open a location.” If things go well, they have the rights to open more locations in the area.

I had the Crazy King Burrito- which was Tortilla, Beans, Rice, Cheese, Asada, Shrimp, Butter, Garlic, Onion, House Sauce (Chipotle), Lettuce, Sour Cream. It was huge and I ended up taking half of it home for another meal. They offer 3 sauces you can add to your meal, a Diablo, which is crazy spicy hot, a Chipotle and a Verde sauce.

Dayton’s Caffeine-Conscious Coffee Startup Hits DLM Shelves
It has come full circle for Kait Brown, a Dayton coffee startup founder who is celebrating her company’s first major retail account — on the shelves of the local grocery store where she got her very first job as a teenage barista.
In the two years since Kait pitched caffeine-conscious coffee company Savorista at Launch Dayton partner Parallax’s monthly Early Risers pitch event, the company has won the University of Dayton’s Flyer Pitch competition, been accepted into the Entrepreneurs’ Center’s ESP portfolio, rebranded, and landed on the shelves of Dorothy Lane Market.
“We couldn’t be more excited, given that Dorothy Lane Market is the specialty, gourmet store in the region,” Kait said. “It was definitely our first choice when we thought about where we wanted to see Savorista.”
Kait’s decaf journey began many years ago. She was living in Chicago, working a corporate gig. Her then-boyfriend had just moved to town to make a go of it when her father was diagnosed with cancer. She realized her caffeinated coffee habit was magnifying her stress and restless nights.
So she set out to find good decaf — a journey that ultimately took her around the world, meeting with coffee farmers and natural decaffeinaters, and Savorista was born. Today, the company offers a variety of decaf and half-caf coffees in whole bean or various grinds, including some limited-edition flavors.
These days you can also find Savorista’s craft decaf and half-caf coffees at Butter Cafe on Brown Street and at Wholly Grounds on Wayne Ave.
“It’s kind of cool — we’ve got girl power over here, and Butter Cafe and Wholly Grounds are also female-owned, so there’s this team of powerful, ambitious women paving the way for caffeine-conscious coffee,” Savorista’s Dayton Sales Rep Kiki Huddleston reflected.
This summer, Savorista hit its next milestone — the launch of its new line of single-serve pour-over coffees, available in both decaf and half-caf flavors.
“There’s this broader interest among coffee lovers to be conscious about their caffeine intake,” Kait said. “Sometimes they want a cup of decaf at night, sometimes they want to be able to drink more coffee throughout the day. Coffee is often seen as an energy drink, a way to do more, push harder, but that often leads to burnout. We’re really trying to help people think about how they can enjoy coffee in a different way, take a moment for themselves, to savor the journey of life while they’re getting things done.”
The launch of the single-serve pour-overs gives Savorista’s customers another way to be caffeine-conscious by offering the option to make, say, a quick cup of half-caf coffee in the afternoon, instead of needing to make a whole pot.
There’s also growth opportunities in grocery and hospitality sectors, Kait said — restaurants are starting to seek strong offerings for customers that don’t drink caffeine at all.
But don’t worry, she adds — Savorista coffee lovers will always be able to order their coffee online, even as the company expands retail locations. The company was founded digital-first, a platform that helped them steadily grow, even amid a global pandemic.
“Launching digital-first allowed us to reach caffeine-conscious coffee lovers where they were,” Kait said. “People are thoughtful about coffee everywhere, but they’re not the majority. We knew we needed to be able to reach people wherever they were.”
And as the company grows this summer, so, too, will Kait’s family. She and her now-husband, Daniel Fernandes— that same boyfriend who moved to Chicago, and then traveled the world with her in search of great decaf — are welcoming their first little one.
“The nice thing is that, I’m already running a coffee company that’s thoughtful about caffeine, so I’ve had great decaf and half-caf at an arms’ length,” she said with a laugh. “But yes, I’ll be figuring out how to be a mom and an entrepreneur, and I’m not sure how to do that yet.”
Want to try Savorista coffee for yourself? Order online at savorista.com, or snag a bag at your local Dorothy Lane Market.
