New Dining Experience Coming to Wright Dunbar

June 12, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Wright Dunbar neighborhood is about to embark on a creative new project, which will become a dining destination on Wes is in the process of creating  a food hall, that will have space for 5 restaurant concepts, a coffee shop and bar at 1100 West Third Street.   The Dillin-led project is a joint venture with nonprofit Wright-Dunbar, Inc. with support from the City of Dayton.  The 6,000 square foot building will have indoor and outdoor seating, and perhaps a rooftop deck (pending approval by the Landmarks Commission). A garage door on the east side of the building will open up the space, making it east to feature live music.

Early renditions of W. Social Tap & Table:

Each eatery would have their own counter, so guests can order from different restaurants then join together in communal seating.  One bar would serve the entire building. Projected opening could be as soon as fall 2020.  Interested in leasing space in the Food Hall?  Contact Dillin.

Stay tuned for more updates.

A Video Series for Making Cocktails At Home – UPDATED

June 9, 2020 By Brian Petro

(This post, and schedule, can also be found on the website Smart Guy in a Tie)

Coffee CocktailsMost people would be surprised by the number of cocktail ingredients they have in their kitchen. Fruits, vegetables, prepackaged drinks, and many other ingredients are the same ones used in bars around the world. Everywhere from James Beard Award-winning bars to the neighborhood bar where the beer is always cold, and you can usually find a friend there. The only thing you need to add is liquor. When I started Kitchen Cocktails two months ago, the goal was to show people what they can do with a couple of bottles and ingredients in the house. If you could purchase it at the grocery store or the liquor store, you could make it at home. People seem to be enjoying it, and with so many topics to cover, I thought it would help if you knew the rest of the month in advance.

Every one of these events is scheduled on my Facebook page so that you can note them on your calendar. The events are also where I will be adding the ingredients or other materials you will need if you want to make the cocktails along with me, or later that night. Mondays are #MakeItMonday, where I will be showing you a new technique or talking about materials you need for a home bar. Wednesdays, I will focus on bottles of liquor or cocktails people watching have at home they want to explore. You can respond to the pinned post on my Facebook page if you’re going to add something to the list. On Friday, we look at a themed type of cocktail or category of cocktail to explore. One you can experiment with at home!

Tonic TastingHere is the schedule for the rest of June. Every episode is at 5 PM EDT:

June 8: Infinity bottle

Have some spare whiskey or rum in the house? This bottle could be an excellent way to create a unique blend.

June 10: Iced Tea

Summer is a week and a half away, and we all love a good glass of cold tea on the patio. Adding something to it never hurts.

June 12: Old Fashioned

Every bar has their version of the Old Fashioned, and they are all sworn to be the original. I will go through the basics for you.

June 15: Tools of the trade have a variety of tools laying in front of me for every cocktail I make. But what ones do you need to start a home bar?

June 17: Chartreuse

Which came first, the color or the liqueur? This herbal product of France slides deliciously into many cocktails.

June 19: Nathan “Nearest” Green

Mint infused RumJack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is one of the most well known global whiskey brands. For years, the history of the person who taught Jack how to distill was unknown, until a woman tracked it down and brought it to life.

June 22: Infusions

For the fourth Make It Monday of the month, we are going to explore how to infuse your favorite spirits with different flavors.

June 24: Cachaça

The national spirit of Brazil, this earthy, fruity cousin of rum, has a flavor all its own. Grab a bottle and see how you can use it!

June 26: Negroni

One of the classics. Three ingredients, all in equal measure. Like the Old Fashioned, it is a cocktail that has inspired endless variations.

June 29: Batching

Pitcher of cocktailsWhether you are planning on having a few socially distanced friends over or just want something simple to drink after work, there is always room for a bottle of cocktails!

July 1: St. Germain

Made with elderflowers, this lightly floral and sweet liqueur adds a little extra depth to many cocktails.

Thank you all for your support! I am always open to other ideas for episodes, so let me know what you want to see through Facebook, and I will do what I can to accommodate it.

June 2, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

When John & Kelly Hill  purchased The Tavernette in Medway  over 5 years ago, they had intentions to make change, but they wanted to pay respect to the community and past owners so they left it the same.  With the mandatory shut down brought on by the Corona Virus, they decided the time was right for the change.

Joe the bartender, has been promoted to a manager and 10 more tv’s have been added inside.

The success of the patio inspired an additional new front patio. Perhaps the biggest change- the toys and paneling are gone, bringing a bright new feel to the dining room. The famous deviled eggs will stay and they’ve even added a bacon bourbon deviled egg .

Peruvian Street Food Makes Up the Menu at Fino Sur

May 28, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The husband and wife team behind FINO SUR were both born in Lima Peru.  They came to Dayton 15 years ago and have been working in restaurants over the years, while catering Peruvian food for friends and parties.  Last September they participated in The Heritage Festival and after success there, decided to open a restaurant  featuring the foods they loved to make.

The goal was to open the new restaurant in Centerville, OH early March 2020 and bring delicious Peruvian dishes and culture to the city. Unfortunately, the covid-19 crisis delayed our opening but they are finally ready to serve you.

Learn more about the food they serve:

How would you describe Peruvian cuisine?
Peruvian cuisine as we know it today is a product of miscegenation that occurs in Peru. First The arrival of the Europeans with the discovery of America and the conquest. Then they come to migration from different parts of the world. This is how Africans, Chinese, Italians, Japanese, Jews, and Arabs arrive. This mixture of cultures and races was given in the homes of Peru. Immigrants begin to cook the products they find in the new continent using their techniques. This is the case, for example, that the Lomo saltado is born, pieces of meat sauteed with onion, tomato, yellow pepper, tools such as the wok and the technique of the Chinese immigrants that giving it a few turns and the wrapping in the flames creates an exquisite dish like this. What does anticuchos mean?
The name of anticuchos derives from the Quechua words “Anti”: an eastern region of the Andes and Kuchu: cut. They are popular and inexpensive meat dishes that originated in the Andes during the pre-Columbian era specifically in the Antisuyu region of the Tahuantinsuyo (Inca Empire). The most popular anticucho is that of the heart of beef and you find it in the streets of Lima as well as in restaurants.
Why is one of the most popular sauces of Peruvian food called Huancaina sauce?

The most popular sauce of Peruvian cuisine takes its name in tribute to the city of Huancayo in the Mantaro river valley in the Junin region. The creator of the recipe bought the potato in this region and named it in honor of the city of Huancayo “Papa a la Huancayo-Huancaina”.

What is Rocoto?

Rocoto is a hot pepper. Its name has its origins in Quechua “luqutu” o “rukutu” is found mainly in Peru and Bolivia. Rocoto is a hot pepper that dates back to pre-Inca times. For those that like spicy food we are making a spice sauce to accompany your food.

What is Chimichurri sauce?

A sauce that has origin in South America in the countryside of Argentina and Uruguay. It is made of finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, oregano, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Exist different recipes that add other ingredients to those already mentioned. Chimichurri is used as a condiment for grilled meat.

What is Golf Sauce?

It is a South American cold sauce a base of tomato sauce, mayonnaise and other ingredients. According to the legend, it was invented by Nobel laureate Luis Federico Leloir in the mids 1920s at a golf club at the seaside resort Mar del Plata.

What is Chalaca sauce?

It is a sauce that accompanies one of the most popular dishes of Chalaco origin, called “Choros a la Chalaca” (the native people of the region of the port of Callao are called Chalacos). This dish consists of cooked Choros (a mollusk from the mussels family) accompanied by this sauce consisting of diced onion, squared tomatoes, boiled corn kernels, coriander, and lime juice.

What is Criolla sauce?

Criolla sauce It is the sauce consisting of red onion in julienne cut, chopped yellow pepper, chopped cilantro, and lime juice, which is a classic accompaniment in different dishes of Peruvian cuisine.

Why are there products that Peruvian cuisine uses that we don’t know?

When Europeans arrive in America a kind of natural exchange begins, they carry a basket of products that spread them in Europe and the world for example: the potato that was a native product of Peru and was universalized now you find a variety of potato in any part of the world. There are many Peruvian products that were left to say in some way hidden in the Peruvian mountains and were not used for many centuries since the Spaniards replaced some products of the Andean diet with cereals until recent times that we have begun to explore and spread its benefits, an example of one of these products is Quinoa.

How many varieties of potatoes exist in Peru?

In Peru, there are more than 5,000 varieties of potatoes. Peru is considered Globally as the first country in potato biodiversity. Only in the region of Cuzco, there are more than 1,500 varieties of potatoes and it is within Peru the region with the greatest diversity of native potatoes.

Is Peruvian food spicy?

Peruvian food uses a variety of species and ajies native to the region to season the food. Some dishes are spicy and others are not. That depends on the taste of each person but I think in general we make dishes with a moderate level of spicy.

How many varieties of chili pepper exist in Peru?

In Peru, there are more than 350 varieties of ajies and many more varieties to explore in some regions of Peru. Among the best known and used varieties are yellow pepper, rocoto, aji panca, aji limo, aji mirasol is a sun-dried pepper, aji mochero, etc.

What type of side dishes accompanies Peruvian food?

The dishes of Peruvian food are served with potatoes, cassava, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, fried plantains, and pasta. These fittings vary according to the different regions.

What has been the phenomenon that has turned Peruvian cuisine into one of the most prestigious kitchens in the World?

For more or less 25 years, a movement originated by a group of Peruvian chefs began, some who returned from Europe and other parts of the world and others who studied in Peru leaders who left their pride and vanities aside and began to talk about how to rescue old recipes, improve those that had and joined together to develop new ideas and different projects. Thus, in 2008, the MISTURA International Gastronomic Fair of Lima opened for the first time not only for cooking but for culture, tradition, and diversity. In addition, the Pachacutec cooking school is created in Ventanilla, subsidized by the arzobispado del Callao, for low-income people and with foreign donations, such as a library brought from Spain and the help of renowned Peruvian chefs. This school was created to give opportunities to low-income children and use gastronomy as a social weapon and transform lives and create opportunities for young entrepreneurs. It is so that today there are thousands of restaurants not only in Peru but also in the most important cities in the world, all this has turned Peru as a tourist destination and culinary destination.

Zombie Dogz Back to Food Truck Roots

May 15, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

I can remember having my first ZombieDogz in 2014 in the Lowe’s Parking lot on Wilmington Pike.  It was the CALLING IN DEAD:  An all beef hot dog topped with a creamy homemade white truffle mac & cheese  and finished off with crumbled crackers.  It was my first of many experiences at this truck, which quickly established a cult following at food truck rallies, often with waits of up to an hour for one of their gourmet dogs.

In fall of 2016 they opened up a shop near UD on Brown Street.  But sadly, today on Facebook they’ve announced the store will close:

“Good morning everybody. First and foremost we hope that everyone is staying healthy and handling life the best they can right now.

The past year or so have been trying for us as a restaurant. Sales have been down and we’ve been barely getting by every month. Unfortunately having to shut down for 2 months only made matters worse. So with a very heavy heart we will be shutting the restaurant down permanently.

We will start back with the food truck when we can do so safely. Most of the festivals have already been cancelled for the year. So we will be doing what we can this summer and fall to get out there as much as possible. We will be keeping everyone updated when we know exactly when the truck will start back up again.

We want to thank everyone of you for years of constant support and love. Thank you for everything you have always done for us. We love you all and we can’t wait to get out there and see you at the food truck.”

So now we’ll be on the lookout for their Food Truck out and about.

Ohio Craft Brewers Association launches Ohio Brew Haul

May 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association is organizing the Ohio Brew Haul, a campaign to encourage craft beer drinkers to buy beer to-go from their local breweries from May 14-17 in conjunction with American Craft Beer Week. Ohio breweries have kept their businesses afloat during the state-ordered closure of bars and restaurants by selling beer for carry out, curbside pickup, home delivery and direct shipping.

While Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced last week that breweries, restaurants and bars can re-open outdoor seating starting May 15 and indoor seating starting May 21, many breweries will still offer their carry out, delivery and shipping options for customers who wish to continue to enjoy their craft beer at home.

From May 14-17, participants are encouraged to post photos of their Ohio beer purchases to Instagram with the hashtag #OhioBrewHaul. 10 posters will be chosen throughout the four-day period and will receive prizes provided by the OCBA. Those who purchase Ohio Brew Haul merchandise will be eligible to earn five bonus passport stamps on the Ohio On Tap app.

The campaign is a fundraiser both for the non-profit Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) and for its member breweries. Orders for limited edition Ohio Brew Haul merchandise will be taken from May 14 through May 31 at the OCBA online store (http://bit.ly/ocbastore) with net proceeds from each sale split between OCBA and an Ohio craft brewery chosen by the customer.

A map tool is available online at ohiobrewhaul.com to help craft beer drinkers identify which breweries near them are offering carry out, home delivery and direct shipping. The tool also provides info on other ways to support local breweries, identifying those that are offering food, selling gift cards or have an online merchandise store.

Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote, preserve and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry. We aspire to be recognized as the industry leader at both state and national levels for preserving the art of making high-quality, unique craft beer; to serve as the unified voice for craft brewers across the state; to advocate on behalf of the Ohio craft beer industry; to contribute to systemic, local community development by driving economic and job growth, while creating experiences that bring people together; and to serve as a beacon for local production and manufacturing through craft beer, resulting in diverse choices for consumers.

Nan Says No to Additional Outdoor Seating for Restaurants

May 12, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The city of Cincinnati just announced it is closing a number of streets and lanes near restaurants so that restaurants can expand seating capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 25 locations will be included in these street and lane shutdowns. Restaurants will be able to put more tables outside, such as in the sidewalks or in the streets, in order to maintain proper social distancing.

Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius has proposed a solution, which involves opening up many of the city’s public spaces for al fresco dining, allowing restaurants to have ‘outdoor cafes’ in parks and in the main square.

A number of Dayton citizens shared these posts, asking Dayton to do this as well.   But today Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley announced that the City would not be issuing new or additional outdoor seating permits to coincide with the reopening of restaurants on Friday, May 15. The City will reassess this policy in partnership with Public Health – Dayton Montgomery County in early June as COVID-19 testing and contract tracing reach appropriate scale.
“As always the health and safety of this community is our top priority,” said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. “While we are excited for our local businesses to open we want to be thoughtful about our role in ensuring public safety.”
Additionally the City will not be approving permits that would allow restaurants to use parking areas or other areas designed for or typically utilized by vehicles.
“We understand how especially devastating this crisis has been on our bars and restaurants,” said Shelley Dickstein, Dayton City Manager. “During this time, we have been reviewing rules, regulations, and zoning codes in anticipation of the reopening of these businesses, as they navigate new safety and social distancing protocols. We will continue to work creatively to support our local restaurants and bars as they begin to recover from this crisis.”

Patios Opening Friday Night

May 12, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Governor DeWine  has given the all clear for restaurants to serve on their patio’s starting this Friday.  A prohibition against gatherings of more than 10 people remains in place, so please, if you are going out be sure to keep your group small, be courteous to all, remember many restaurants may not have been able to bring back their complete staff and that wait times will probably be longer than usual.  We also encourage you to wear a mask when you go out, and most serving staff will be wearing them as well. Once you are seated at your table, you of course may remove your mask to eat and drink.

In a survey we did in our DaytonDining group on Sunday, out of 500 responses only 15% answered that they would be on a patio this Friday.  About 12% responded they’d be ready to dine inside by May 21st and 54% said they would continue to order carry out.

For those of you ready to party on a patio, below are the ones we’ve confirmed will be open. We will continue to update this list as we hear more.
