Food Service Coming to The Barrel House

November 29, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

A new option for food is coming to The Barrel House downtown Dayton! Katie Marks, best known for the The Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton, is debuting  a new food truck operation called Griller B’s, that will be located in the parking lot of The Barrel House.  The name is  a small nod to the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan,  which is a favorite of The Barrel House owners, Gus & Sara Stathes.

Starting out, Griller B’s will be open Thursday from 5pm-9pm, then Friday and Saturday 5pm-11pm. This way, during peak hours people can still experience great beer on draft without having to leave the premises for food, and also enjoy a great food truck menu without waiting in the cold. The menu will consist of burgers, quesadillas, nachos, different mac and cheeses etc. along with vegan faire. Every fourth Thursday of the month there will also be a gourmet grilled cheese menu to pair with The Barrel House’s wine tasting.  They expect to  begin service on December 7th. Stay tuned to their Facebook Page for more info!

5 Secret Spots to Watch the Ohio State/Mich and Bengals/Browns

November 22, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

There are 2 big football rivalries this weekend..

Michigan at Ohio State Saturday Nov 24th at Noon and

The Browns at the Bengals Sunday Nov 25th at 1pm

You love to go out and see the games, but tired of crowds?

We have some tips on places to get good eats and watch the games without wrestling people for tables or a decent seat.

We call them our secret places for Food Adventures during popular sporting events ….

Get to the restaurant about 20 minutes before the games start and you should have no trouble grabbing a “primo seat.”

1) BENNETTS PUBLICAL in MIAMISBURG:

Sriracha Sweet Wings at Bennett’s Publical

67 S Main St, Miamisburg, OH 45342
This undiscovered gem, continues to amaze us. From their 7 bean soup from grandmas recipe, to their gorgonzola topped local beef steaks, this is a PERFECT place to catch the games. Plenty of TV’s and plenty of bottled and draft beer choices, this place features a full cocktail bar and a full menu that impresses. Other must eats are the wings and the fish platter. We love this place!

2) LOCK 27 in CENTERVILLE
1035 S Main St, Centerville, OH 45458
Sit at the bar or not and enjoy the games on this gastro pub’s TV’s. Some of the best local beers will also be at your fingertips. Their menu is a unique collection of memorable appetizers and sandwiches. There should be no problem finding a seat, and an afternoon of good day drinking and plush food. Must Eats are the smoked wings and any of their sandwiches. Enjoy the atmosphere !

Sticky Burger – loaded up by Big Ragu

3) ARCHERS TAVERN IN KETTERING’S ENCLOSED PATIO AREA
2030 E Dorothy Ln, Kettering, OH 45420
The enclosed patio area is a little known spot for seating under a couple of TV’s. There are also televisions in the bar area. The bonus here is a strong beer list and an affordable family friendly menu. Archer’s has spread its wings into Kettering and is a great spot to catch these games. MUST EATS: The Sticky Burger, Margherita Pizza and Wings with Sweet n Sexy Sauce.

4) THE DAYTON BEER COMPANY DOWNTOWN
41 Madison St, Dayton, OH 45402
Belly up to the bar or sit in the bier hall type atmosphere under the TV’s. This should give you a great spot to enjoy the games with the greatest selection of Ohio beers in town. Hungry? Try the Second Street Pizza window inside the establishment. Craft Beer and Pizza Pie with brutal rivalries? You can’t go wrong here !

At the Dayton Beer Company Bar

5) MCGILLICUTTYS on WHIPP RD
1980 E Whipp Rd, Kettering, OH 45440
Grab a “Mega Mug” of your favorite draft beer. This restaurant has some TV;s and even an old school projector screen. The bottom line is you can watch the game and enjoy some great eats. The bar is huge and has lots of domestic, national favorites. The food is some of the most underrated in the area. Must Eats are the breadsticks (they are seriously the Worlds greatest) with garlic butter or nacho cheese dip.  Also, the pizza is terrific.

There you have it. 5 spots to hit up the game while you eat, drink and be merry.
Whether your team wins or not, you will have had one heck of a Food Adventure.

New Chef For The New Year at Coco’s Bistro

November 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The new year will bring an exciting new change for Dayton’s own Coco’s Bistro.

The restaurant has hired Chef Bryan Ondre to take the helm of its kitchen team and infuse his unique outlook into the restaurants menu beginning January 2.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to prepare the food I like to cook and to be downtown at Coco’s,” he said. “Coco’s has such a great and supportive environment, and I am excited to bring my own take on food to the community through this opportunity.”

Ondre has an extensive career in the Dayton community, having worked in the kitchens of Pacchia, Salar and most recently Coldwater Cafe. He also spent five years at Serato in Portland, Oregon.

“I feel like I learned something from every chef I worked under,” Ondre said. “But then I took it and made it my own style, and I can’t wait to bring that to Coco’s.

Coco’s has built a strong reputation in the community for being a classy and approachable community destination, and have a longstanding reputation in the region. The Executive Chef is a meaningful piece in making it all come together. This team needs a leader in the kitchen that is creative, driven and enjoys developing skills among a passionate team and Ondre is eager to take on that role for Coco’s.

“The people who dine here are our friends and neighbors,” said Proprietress Karen Wick-Gagnet. “People come to Coco’s to create memories and have meaningful, authentic experiences, and we are looking forward to sharing new experience with them in 2019 when Bryan comes on board.”

3 Thanksgiving Recipes: We Be Yammin’

November 20, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Food Adventure Crew  will be yammin’ this Thanksgiving.   Today we share 3 of our “go to” recipes that may put a resurgence in your holiday sweet potato dishes.

First let’s get the scoop on this SWEET POTATOES !

HERE IS THE SKINNY ON SWEET POTATOES aka YAMS:

—That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweet potato. Yes, all so-called “yams” are in fact sweet potatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweet potatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweet potatoes.

Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet

— They contain high amounts of fiber and potassium. They have more grams of natural sugars than regular potato but more overall nutrients with fewer calories.  Sweet potatoes are thought to help maintain a healthy blood pressure and protect against cancer.

RECIPE #1: Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet

Lets get into out first recipe – This one is from our in-house health and wellness Food Adventurer, Jessie Whitesell.  This active mom has her own health and nutrition coach business.  She can be reached at [email protected]

This Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet takes 30 mins and you will be amazed by the fall flavors.  It’s ONE-PAN meal that is perfect for your family to enjoy!  This dish is GLUTEN FREE !

3 Tips to make the best Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet recipe:

  1. Don’t overload your skillet with sweet potato because this veggies will take forever to cook and you may burn your food. If your cast iron skillet is 9-10 inches, the ideal amount of diced sweet potato is between 2-3 cups.
  2. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to medium to cook the sweet potato faster.
  3. You can cook first the sweet potato and add it into the pan when the ground turkey is cooked.

    Ingredients

    •  2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
    •  1 lbs grass-fed extra-lean ground turkey
    •  1 tsp garlic clove — minced
    •  ½ cup onions — diced
    •  ½ cup yellow pepper — diced
    •  1 ½ cups sweet potato — peeled and diced
    •  Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    •  A pinch of red chili flakes
    •  ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

      Instructions

      Jessie Whitesell

      1. In an iron cast skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
      2. Add ground turkey and garlic. Use a wood spoon breaking up the turkey while it cooks. Stir occasionally and cook for about 5 minutes.
      3. Add onions and yellow peppers and cook until onions are soft.
      4. Add the sweet potato, chili pepper, salt, and pepper.
      5. Cover the skillet and cook until they are tender. Don’t forget to stir occasionally. If necessary, add more olive oil or a little bit of water to cook the sweet potato faster.
      6. While the sweet potato is cooking, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
      7. When the sweet potato is tender, add shredded mozzarella cheese and bring the skillet to the oven to melt the cheese
      8. When the cheese melts, remove from the oven, and garnish with parsley.

      RECIPE #2: Cora’s Sweet Potatoes

This one is from our Food Adventurer Jackie – the Upstate New York Italian mom with a serious appetite.

      Jackie and her daughters

      Jax says:

When planning out our Thanksgiving menu, the kids asked about having sweet potatoes. I became nostalgic and told them how we used to have them with marshmallows on top (they were also the candied sweet potatoes from a can-blech).
Well obviously the kids became excited and insisted I make that for Thanksgiving.  So Cora (my oldest) and I decided to reinvent the old classic with fresh sweet potatoes and of course, adding on the marshmallows! You’ll see that I made the dish half with and half without the marshmallows in case some people aren’t a fan. Though I think you’ll find this dish to have just enough sweetness without being overwhelming.

      Start with Roasted SweetPotatoes

      Ingredients:

3 large sweet potatoes cut into cubes
      1/4 cup Orange Juice
      1/4 cup Butter
      1/2 cup Brown Sugar
      1 tsp Cinnamon
      1/4 tsp Ground Cloves
      1/4 tsp Nutmeg
      1/2 tsp Salt
      1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Grease a 9×13 dish with butter.
In a small saucepan, simmer all ingredients (except sweet potatoes and marshmallows), until slightly reduced to a thin syrup (about 15mins).
In a bowl, toss sweet potatoes with the syrup and then add to the greased dish.

      Coras Sweet Potatoes

Bake covered with foil for approximately 45 minutes, stirring every 15.
Bake uncovered for an additional 20 minutes, or until tender and starting to caramelize.
Top with marshmallows and then broil until brown and gooey!
Again you can top half only with marshmallows like we did.
      Enjoy!

Now we pass the baton to Steve, aka The Big Ragu, who will give us his favorite sweet potato recipe that is an inspiration from the old BURBANKS  restaurants that were in Dayton and Cincinnati that specialized in BBQ.  This is the recipe for their Sweet Potato casserole, which is kind of like a sweet potato pie.  He has made it a few times for dinner parties and holidays and it is always a big hit !

RECIPE #3: Burbank’s Sweet Potato Casserole:

    cooking the yams

    Ingredients:

    • 3 cups cooked mashed sweet potatoes
    • 1/2 cup white sugar
    • 2 beaten eggs
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 4 ounces melted butter
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
    • 1/2 cup flour
    • 1 cup chopped nuts
    • 3 tablespoons butter

    Instructions

    Burbanks Sweet Potato Casserole

    1. Mix first seven ingredients together and place in 9×9 glass pan.
    2. Mix remaining ingredients and spread on top of potato mixture.
    3. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until heated through.
    4. Recipe may be doubled.
    5. Enjoy!

El Grecos Pizza Villa Announces Closing

November 17, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Since the 1960’s El Greco’s Pizza Villa has been a hot spot on Salem Ave in Trotwood.  In more recent years it’s been a destination as most the of plaza it’s located in is empty.  Know for its unique flavors,  it’s menu features Mexican, greek, pizza, Italian, and some American dishes. Their pizza is square sliced local style crust with finely ground sausage and pepperoni under generous amounts of provolone cheese. Regulars have still been coming out to enjoy the thin crust pizza or Taco Tuesday, featuring 99 cent tacos, in nicer wether the patio is often packed.

But according to their Facebook page, the end is near for El Greco:

“Our dear, loyal customers, our last day will be Saturday, Dec. 22. This was not an easy decision by any means as I’ve spent most of my life in Greco’s. It’s also been a staple in many of your own lives’. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t hear a story from you. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loyalty, your memories, and your stories! I would also like to thank my Greco’s family, current as well as those from past years. Their love for Greco’s, loyalty and commitment has always astounded me. I would love to see a new leader take the helm to continue this long standing tradition. It’s not easy by any means, but very fulfilling. We’ve always been the place people come home to, and it’s an important job and would require a love for Greco’s and all it represents. Change is never easy so please keep us in your prayers.”

You’ve still got time to visit and relive a piece of Dayton history before they close the doors. And just maybe they’ll share the recipe for their famous house salad dressing before they go.

Order Your Ghostlight Coffee Holiday Pies NOW!

November 16, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Each year the baking elves at Ghostlight Coffee,  South Park’s beloved coffee shop that just celebrated their 7th anniversary,  have been making pecan, sweet potato, pumpkin, and apple vegan pies, as well as cookies and rolls you can order to grace your Thanksgiving table.  Their Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie has been my favorite and something you could proudly show up with for family dinner, knowing you were going to get raves on dessert.

Then they came up with The Ghostlight Thanksgiving pie,  a Pumpkin & Maple Pie with a Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Top and a Graham Cracker Crumble tucked beneath, and that was good.

But this year they have outdone themselves with what is now my favorite pie ever!

The Lumberjack pie is a combination of salty & sweet: a crispy, cinnamon-y cookie inspired crust is filled with ooey-gooey, buttery, custard-y, maple-y goodness. I had a piece of this pie last night and could not wait to get up and have another piece for breakfast.  Order two of these – one to leave at home (you can even stick it in your freezer to enjoy later) and one to take to your Thanksgiving dinner – you’ll thank me later for this.  This pie runs $18 and will easily serve 12 people- it’s incredible rich, so you can make your slices very small and you’ll still be very satisfied.

While you are ordering pick up some Spiced Apple Ciderdoodles! At a recent taste test Brent Johnson from Square One Salon had this to say, “Oh yeah, these are incredible.”  Their magic baker have figured out how to put Spiced Apple Cider in cookie form! Featuring freshly pressed Apple Cider from Pfeifer’s Apple Orchard in Yellow Springs. These cookies are Dairy-free, Egg-free, Nut-free & Vegan, a great treat for many dietary restrictions.

.

In order to get all this yummy goodness on your table you need to order by Sat, Nov 17th and your sweet treats will be ready for pick up on Tuesday 11/20 or Wednesday 11/21  (your choice) between the hours of 12:00pm – 5:00pm.  Here’s the link to order online. If you have any questions or concerns about Pre-Ordered baked goods from Ghostlight Coffee, please contact the bakery by emailing g[email protected].

Not going to be in town for Thanksgiving Head baker Mandy has also shared they will be doing another pie sale in time for the Christmas holiday.

Robert Benson of Centerville Pizza and BBQ

Tucked into a small shopping strip across from the “Super Kroger” on S. Main Street Centerville is a little known place, where you can have a heck of a Food Adventure.  It is an unsung, unassuming little business that you may find to be a new favorite “go to.”

Centerville Pizza and BBQ has quietly been serving up pies and even winning national recognition at pizza competitions.  In 2017, they beat competitors in Columbus to catapult them into the “Super Bowl” of pizza competitions called the International Pizza Competition in Las Vegas.  Pizza Chefs from all over the USA were there, as were pizza tossers from Italy, France and Korea.  They placed 3rd in the Midwest, making their name on the leaderboard!

They were also featured earlier in 2018 in the national pizza magazine, Pizza Today !

So how come so many Daytonians have yet to try this pizza place?

BENSON FAMILY TRADITIONS:
In rural Tennessee in the early 1940’s, “Grandpa Benny” owned Benson’s Grocery.  Locals grabbed groceries, tobacco, fresh foods made from scratch and even moonshine.  Grandpa became “Moonshine Benny” known for his made from scratch foodstuffs as well.  Fast forward to his grandson, now in Dayton known as “Pizza Benny.”  He opened, Centerville Pizza and BBQ on June 1st, 2010 with a philosophy of  pizza dough made from scratch, the best toppings, homemade sauces and signature sides made from real family recipes!

Pulled Pork by the 1/2 pound

But what are the best menu items at Centerville Pizza?

The Food Adventure Crew has been getting take out and delivery for the past 8 years, and have some research into the “must eats.”  Without further delay, here they are ….

MUST EATS AT CENTERVILLE PIZZA and BBQ:

THE ZOMBIE PIZZA:
Ok , sit back and absorb this one. This is one of the best pizzas you will ever eat. Period. They hit it out of the park with this combination of flavors.  The sauce is ranch instead of tomato sauce.  Ingredients include fresh garlic, fresh spinach, provolone and mozzarella cheeses, and finished with pepperoni, bacon, fresh diced tomatoes and Parmesan cheese. TRUST US ! Life changing !!

Broasted Whole Wings

THE BROASTED WHOLE WINGS WITH HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE or HOT SAUCE ON THE SIDE:
Talk about amazing flavor, this is a winner chicken dinner for sure. Get the wings broasted and ask for cups of their sauces bbq, mild, medium and hot.  Crispy, and delicious fried chicken with a taste you will love. DO NOT forget to get those homemade sauces on the side.

PULLED PORK:
Huge serving of pulled pork, and don’t forget to ask Benny’s crew for extra BBQ sauce and drizzle that stuff on top until you can’t drizzle any more. Great as a sandwich or just a fork and the plate. Melts in your mouth goodness. The smoky flavor is great and the prices are right ! Most underrated BBQ in town TRUTH BE TOLD !

Home Made Cornbread with liquid butter on the side.

CORN BREAD WITH BUTTER ON THE SIDE:
When eating BBQ , you cannot leave out the cornbread here. It is baked to perfection and sold in brownie like bites wrapped in plastic. Ask for butter on the side and you get a cup of liquid butter for dipping. NO trip to Centerville BBQ is complete without it.

BABYBACK BBQ RIBS:
The full and half slabs of these baby backs are affordable and delicious. The sauce is smothered on the ribs, but we still ask for extra bbq sauce for dipping. The ribs are a terrific and have a bold taste. Again, one of the best BBQs we have had, that you never hear about.

Is your mouth watering yet?  If so, it is time to make a trip to Centerville.

Sauced up Ribs – Ready to Eat

Please check out this pizza shop, and experience what the buzz is all about.  You may even catch Pizza Benny himself making some fresh dough, or serving customers.  You will love the sauces and the BBQ.  The fact that they deliver great BBQ and Broasted Wings is rare.

Beer and Pie in Miamisburg

November 13, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Everyone loves beer and everyone loves holiday pies, and now you can have them both at one great event as Star City Brewing Company host The Canal House Eatery for Beer and Pie: A Miamisburg Holiday Pairing on Wednesday, November 14.

“Opening earlier this year, we’ve loved getting to know our neighbors just down the street at Canal House Eatery,” said Justin Kohnen, owner of Star City Brewing Company. “When the idea of doing a pairing came up, Tanya’s [Straight, Canal House Eatery’s owner] pies immediately came to mind.”

For the Beer and Pie, guests will be offered a Welcome Pint of their choice, and then a pairing flight of four beers with 4 eighth slices of pie. The full menu is Pumpkin Pie with Building 26 Bière de Garde, Chocolate Pie with Twisted Mill Coffee Stout, Pecan Pie with Legend Red and Apple Pie with Sweet Cider.

“With Thanksgiving coming up and the holidays not long after that, this is a great chance to pick your favorite holiday pies too,” Kohnen said. “The back of our pairing menu will have an order form, so you can take care of all of your holiday party obligations while eating pie and beer with friends! That’s doing the holidays right.”

For those interested, Beer and Pie: A Miamisburg Holiday Pairing costs $17 and takes place on Wednesday, November 14 at 7pm. Tickets are available at both businesses and online as well.
