May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

May 1, 2023 By Guest Contributor

The month of May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It’s a way for us to recognize & acknowledge the contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans have made to our history, our culture, and our country as a whole.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian Americans are anyone whose ancestry traces back to places such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, or one of many other regions on the Asian continent. Pacific Islander Americans are those whose ancestry traces back to places like American Samoa, Guam, Papua, and other various regions in the Oceania part of the world.

With May 1st approaching, ThinkTV has put together a collection of programs that we thought would be relevant to such an important month for so many people.

Contact: Robert’s Place

Robert’s Place is a nonprofit organization that provides spiritual, emotional and physical relief for all people, but especially for Pacific Islanders in crisis. In this video, CEO Dottie Alo discusses the organization and its resources.

Mutually Inclusive: Mounting Asian American and Pacific Islander Discrimination

Our screens have been flooded with headlines of the surging hate crimes and incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islanders. America has a vast background of discrimination towards AAPI communities. On this episode of Mutually Inclusive we look at a brief journey through history to present time and talk with local leaders about where the fight against Asian hate is today.

Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi: Asian American & Pacific Islander

The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is a beautifully diverse group of cultures, and Mickela gets a taste throughout the boroughs – from the Pacific Islands by learning the hula with the Na Pua Mai Ka Lani Nuioka to exploring the Filipino Community of Little Manila in Woodside, Queens, to practicing Japanese Taiko traditional drumming.

A People’s History of Asian America

Produced in partnership by the Center for Asian American Media and PBS Digital Studios, A People’s History of Asian America tells the history of Asian Americans through the microaggressions and stereotypes this community faces.

To The Contrary: Asian American and Pacific Islander Women

We speak with Madalene Mielke, the president & CEO of Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies about the role of AAPI women both as candidates and voters. What are the top issues for this demographic and what are the different ways this voting block affected the midterms?

Dayton Arcade Secures $41 Million To Fund Next Step

April 28, 2023 By Dayton937

Dayton Arcade’s giant is one step closer to being fully awoken once more.

The development team behind the historic Dayton Arcade has secured the necessary funding for the $41M renovation of the North Arcade’s Third Street Arcade and Gibbons Annex, the final two buildings in the Arcade’s nine-building complex.

The Arcade’s Third Street and Gibbons Annex Buildings were built in 1902 as part of the original Arcade development. The historic Third Street Building façade, designed by Frank Mills Andrews in the Flemish guildhall style, is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city of Dayton. Retail was shuttered in 1990 with the rest of the development.

Long seen as the last piece of the Dayton Arcade puzzle, completion of this second phase will allow the Arcade to serve as the retail hub and pedestrian connector in the center of downtown Dayton once again. The upper floors will be home to a 94-room Hilton Garden Inn with a lobby entrance from Third Street.

Danny Nagar of Century Hotel Group says “It has been a privilege to partner with Mira Development Company, Model Group, and Cross Street Partners in the redevelopment of the NorthArcade. By adding hotel rooms to the Arcade complex, we hope to invite locals and tourists to experience the strong food and entertainment scene that continues to grow here. This felt like a great opportunity to preserve and revitalize an iconic area and remove some of the roadblocks that have previously reduced travel to Downtown Dayton. We’re honored to be involved in this project and look forward to the impact that this will have on the local community and the guests that we’re eager to host.”

The first floor of the Third Street Building will house the Arcade’s retail marketplace, with 7,500 sf of small business retail space. Under the North Arcade’s iconic skylight will be small spaces for around 15 local and unique retail opportunities.

“We are very excited about this phase of the project, but it would not have happened without the unwavering commitment of the hotel team of Century Hotel Group and Mira Development,” says Dave Williams, Vice President of Development for Cross Street Partners.

“These projects don’t happen without strong leadership and support and that has continued from both the City, County, CityWide Development, and the Port Authority. The State and Federal Historic and New Market tax credits along with the Ohio Department of Development grant programs were critical sources in completing the North Arcade’s capital stack. It is a great finish to an amazing project and will be catalytic for the Main Street corridor, as well as providing much needed support for the Convention Center.”

The Arcade is a vital component for the reactivation of Courthouse Square and the revitalization of downtown Dayton’s central business district. Construction on the North Arcade has already commenced with anticipated completion of late Q2/Q3 2024.

Sarcastic, Sweet and Solid: ‘Sordid Lives’ Scores!

April 26, 2023 By Joshua Stucky

‘In a Small Texas Town.’

From the moment Jacob Sams (Ty) begins to let us in on the ‘small Texas Town’ and all its craziness, you are immersed in a silly, well-paced production of Del Shore’s much beloved ‘Sordid Lives.’ The story, which revolves around an accidental death of the elderly family matriarch, is filled with characters you cannot help but love, no matter how messed up they are! One rule of thumb with ‘Sordid Lives’….if the cast is having fun, YOU are having fun! This cast was LOVING IT!

Jenna Gomes‘ (Bitsy Mae) guitar solos break-up the madness effortlessly. Faith Whitt’s (Sissy) character is instantly relatable. Rick Flynn‘s (G.W.) frustration is palpable. Diane Strohm‘s (Dr. Eve) outrageous behavior is hysterical. AND keep your eye on Becky Milligan Howard‘s Juanita….it’s stealth,  but she’s a riot! The entire cast really needs a shout-out….of the ten audience members in our party, everyone had a favorite character!

The production, at the Beavercreek Community Theater, has it all. The lighting, the sound…the set…STELLAR!

I was lucky enough to interview the show’s director Doug Lloyd. It went something like this!

JS: So Doug…why ‘Sordid Lives?’

DL: I submitted “SORDID LIVES” because it’s a crazy funny show, with a large number of fun roles for actors to have fun with, but at the same time, has a message of acceptance and love, While the family seems to constantly be screaming at each other, they still love each other and are there for each other in time of need.

JS: And, for big ‘Sordid Lives’ fans, the connection to Brother Boy (brought to life on-screen by the late Leslie Jordan) is essential!

DL: Yes. It’s the kind of show I think we need right now, one that shows acceptance and does it with a sense of humor.

Brother Boy (Matthew Smith) and His Therapist! (Strohm)

Lloyd is right about this. With Drag Queen bans, and Anti-LGBTQ sentiment on the rise, this show handles it in stride….and with this cast, with a lot of heart!

JS: What would you say people can expect from this show?

DL: An evening of quality theatre, full of laughs. You may leave with your face a bit sore from smiling and laughing, but you will leave feeling good and knowing you had a great time.

I know my group of 10 did. We all chatted at intermission about how impressed we were (as we ate cookies and drank punch! Perfect!) The show was engaging…and we were anxious for the second act!

JS: I don’t know if people know about your theater experience. Would you mind sharing?

DL: Sure! I have been involved with theatre since I was in the first grade, close to sixty years ago.  I have been involved with BCT for close to 25 years. I am president of BCT and have been on stage or in the director’s chair for countless productions at BCT and other theatre’s in the Dayton area, including Dayton Theatre Guild, Dayton Playhouse, and Town Hall Theatre. I have received numerous ‘Daytony’ Awards and was inducted into the Dayton Theatre Hall Of Fame in 2011.  Besides theatre, I am retired from the City Of Beavercreek, am a potter that works out of and serves on the board at John Bryan Community Pottery in Yellow Springs. I also do stained glass, and am the proud poppa of three rescue dogs. One of which was recently onstage at BCT.

JS: You are BUSY, SIR! So much to be proud of. But what is it about directing that you enjoy?

DL: I love the creative aspect of it.  “Coaching” a group of actors and technical crew to work together and create an enjoyable work of art.  There are so many aspects that need coordinated to come together for the performance. Actors, lights, sounds, set, costumes, props, programs, publicity, ticket sales and more. It literally takes an army of volunteers to put a show together.  It is so rewarding to watch the audience react to the performance after all the hard work by everyone.

Fun Cast!

JS: Well your army nailed it! I know all directors hope audiences take
something from their experience at the show. What do you hope people take from ‘Sordid Lives?’
DL: Bottom line, I hope they walk away having had a great time. That they laughed till they were out of breath, and if they get the message that it’s ok to be different, to be yourself, and if it inspires them to  become more accepting of those that are, That would be wonderful.  If they also learn that BCT presents quality amateur theatre and makes them want to come back to future performances, all the better.
JS: Love that….and I have to say, I will be back! Doug, what is next for BCT? Have they announced the 2023-24 season yet?

DL: The next production at BCT is the musical “TWELFTH NIGHT” a modern twist of the Shakespeare comedy which opens June 16th.

Our 2023-2024 season includes
“BRIGHT STAR” the Steve Martin musical in August
Neil Simon’s “THE GINGERBREAD LADY” in October
Noel Coward’s “PRIVATE LIVES” next January 2024
“ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS” in April 2024
“THE HELLO GIRLS” in June of 2024.
JS: This sounds amazing. Again, congratulations on ‘Sordid Lives.’  For those of you interested in attending, I have been told there is a ‘low ticket alert…’ GRAB YOURS. It’s a good time in that small town in Texas!  THANK YOU DOUG!
DL: Thank YOU!

This Must Be the Party hits the stage this Friday at The Brightside

April 10, 2023 By Dayton Most Metro

One of the most celebrated music events in Dayton during the last decade is back! This Must Be the Party is a local super group who performs a fantastic tribute to The Talking Heads. Fans love the complete recreation of the classic album and documentary film Stop Making Sense that they perform! Catch them for an exclusive show Friday April 14, 2023 at The Brightside, in downtown Dayton.

Few bands are as well-known in the music industry as the Talking Heads. The band, which was founded in the middle of the 1970s, contributed to the development of a new musical genre that would later come to rule the radio in the 1980s. The Talking Heads were one of the most innovative and forward-thinking bands of their period with their special fusion of rock, groove, and New Wave. It’s no wonder that Dayton audiences love this tribute show!

Due to the Covid shutdown, This Must Be the Party hasn’t performed since 2019, so this is a highly anticipated event! The best part is that part of the proceeds from this show go to benefit The Seedling Foundation, an organization that supports the arts magnet at Stivers School for the Arts. It’s a musical celebration to support music education!

If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing this amazing show already, you know how much fun to expect! (Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes!) This go around, there is a very special guest joining the show. Sammi Garett, from the national touring acts Turquaz, Cool Cool Cool, & The Bump Assembly, is flying in from Brooklyn to join the crew! She’s an absolutely fabulous singer and performer, and she’s excited to perform in Dayton for the first time.

Local original band, Intergalactic Space Force, is kicking off the show at 8:30pm, shortly after doors open. They were Dayton Battle of the Bands finalists last year, and always love an opportunity to perform at The Brightside.

After the Stop Making Sense headlining show, if you’re still ready to boogie, Freekbass will be making his Brightside debut with a “Solo Grooves” after party.

If you get hungry, the venue has coordinated with Phat & Rich to be on site to serve your needs. The Mexican inspired cuisine is a hit with concert goers, so go hungry and hang on the Brightside’s awesome patio between sets.

If you’re looking for a place to pre-game, organizers recommend going to Tender Mercy for their amazing cocktails. “Not only is Tender Mercy our neighbor, they are one of the primary sponsors of this event!” event organizer, Libby Ballengee told us. “Their sister restaurant Sueño, is an amazing spot for dinner too, but I’d get reservations first!”

This Must Be the Party promises to be one of the most memorable events of the spring!

*The band includes: Khrys Blank, Nathan Lewis, Patrick Himes, Brian Hoeflich, Erich Reith, Aaron Holmes, Matt Byanski, Eric Cassidy, Nathan Peters, Christopher Corn, Brian Spirk, with special guest Sammi Garett.

Wishing All Our Jewish Friends A Joyous Passover

April 5, 2023 By Dayton937

Passover 2023 starts at sundown tonight, and many around the world will celebrate by holding a seder, a ritual meal to celebrate the holiday. The holiday will run over the next seven days, ending on April 13. Many communities will hold seders during the first two nights, which is a ritual feast that includes telling the story of Passover, drinking wine, eating symbolic food and celebrating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.

God instructed Moses to tell the Israelite people to bring a lamb into their homes on the same night that God said he would strike down the firstborn child of the Egyptians.

The Israelites then slaughtered the lambs and ate them with matzah (unleavened bread) and maror (bitter herbs). Afterward, they were instructed to smear the blood of the lamb on their doorposts as a sign to God that this was an Israelite home to be “passed over” while death visited the homes of the other firstborns.

On the first two nights of the holiday, a ceremonial meal called Seder is observed.

The 15-step tradition includes eating matzah and maror, drinking wine or grape juice, and reading from a Haggadah, according to the Chabad-Lubavitch Media Center.

Unleavened bread is eaten to signify what Jews brought along for food when quickly leaving Egypt. A Haggadah tells the story of the Exodus and describes rituals.

During Passover, Jews are not allowed to consume grains, such as wheat, barley, spelt, oats and rye, that can ferment or become leavened, Chabad.org says. So, they cannot eat breads, pastas, cakes, cookies, pizza, beer, certain types of liquor and other foods.

Wheat flour can only be eaten during Passover if it is baked into matzah.

Even dishes must be cleaned thoroughly to remove any trace of the forbidden leavened food — called chametz — if that dish is to be used to cook kosher food for the holiday.

RubiGirls aim to ‘Save the Queens!’

April 1, 2023 By Dayton937

There is a lot of pushback on Drag Queens in America these days. Most bans and restrictions have been halted in the name of Free Speech…but in an effort to keep Drag Alive, Dayton’s beloved RubiGirls are bringing a Brunch to Tender Mercy on Sunday, April 30! The theme….‘God Save the Queens!’ One of the RubiGirls Founders, Dana Sintell, gave us the scoop….it went something like this…

The RubiQueens looking for ‘Mercy!’

D9: So, Rubi to the rescue once again, eh?

DS: Kind of, yes. Look. we fear what we don’t quite understand..that’s human nature. What is not human nature is to keep others from pursuing their best life by imposing ours on them! That’s not Democracy, nor is it protecting Free Speech. The RubiGirls get what’s happening…and we hope people will join us at Brunch to celebrate. We are all about FUN and ‘Fun’draising. This is another opportunity to help others in the area!

D9: The show benefits East End Community Services…right?

DS: That’s correct. The RubiGirls have helped raise somewhere around 2.5 million dollars for non-profits and charities. I think that’s one thing people need to know. Why would you ever want to shut down those who are helping others….strange really.

D9: So, ‘God Save the Queens!‘ What should we expect?

DS: Craziness….tenderness….fun….games….purpose! All of it. AND A GREAT ENGLISH BRUNCH! I think ‘God Save The Queens‘ lends itself to many meanings. Helping communities understand what we can do when we ALL work together is one. It also brings to mind an English flare which Tender Mercy is incorporating in the day. And let’s not forget, we are all Queens in our own little worlds….moms who need to get out and see a show; college students who need a Sunday filled with laughs and entertainment; and people who just want a way to support Rubi as we aim to help others…that’s pretty majestic, don’t you think?

Dayton’s RubiGirls have raised over $2,000,000!

D9: Which Girls will we see on the 30th?

DS: Ileasa Plymouth, Fonda Peters, Tara Misu, Taj Mahal, Minnie Skirt and India Summer. I’ll be hosting the mayhem…and yes, we will have our signature RUBIngo games as well. We always try to amp things up and make things a little different. The numbers in these Tender Mercy shows are always a bit different as we all support each other in each song….it’s like group numbers from start to finish!

D9: Any details we need to know?

DS: Yes. 12:30pm the doors open. Tickets are $30, which includes an English Brunch Plate! Tender Mercy is at 607 East Third!

D9: Sounds like a hoot….and the idea it benefits East End Community Services is really awesome. Folks, the RubiGirls sell-out…get your tickets, ASAP! Thanks Dana….

Dana Sintell Hosts the Event!

DS: Thank you…and ‘God Save The Queens!!’
