Tix Now On Sale for Triangle Park Movie

September 13, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

In the fall of 2020, Centerville filmmaker Allen Farst held a press conference at Carillon Park, in front of the old locker room of the Dayton Triangles announcing he was making a movie about the first NFL football game played here in Dayton on October 3, 1920.

In an interview with Dayton Daily News reporter Don Thrasher Farst said, “to be honest, I can’t believe no one’s ever told the story about the first ever NFL football game. The thing is, you’d have to be from here to even know about it.”

Check out this behind the scenes video about Triangle Park.

The film will uncover the facts around this seminal game in over 100 years.  One of 14 original professional teams, the Dayton Triangles played on Sunday October 3rd, 1920 in front of 5,000 fans. Farst goes to the depths to connect family decedents of former players even finding never before seen football treasures while leaning on football greats such as Troy Aikman, Ben Roethlisberger, Eric Dickerson, Joe Buck, Cooper Kupp, Joe Theismann, Larry Fitzgerald, Cris Collinsworth, Tony Dungy and more to uncover this generational story.

In filming the reenactments of the game here in Dayton at Triangle Park, Farst used the helmets, pads and uniforms worn in the 2008 George Clooney comedy “Leatherheads.”

The film is now ready to be shared with our community and the first screening will be held on Oct 25th at The Plaza Theatre, in Miamisburg. Get Tickets here.

There will be more screening November 7th – 9th at the NEON Theater in Dayton. The worldwide release on digital platforms Amazon Prime & Apple TV will be on Thanksgiving Day.

Kerfuffle = Two Deals for Spectrum Cable or Internet Subscribers

September 9, 2023 By Guest Contributor

Deal #1:

Last week, 19 Disney-owned channels and seven ABC stations were yanked off Spectrum Cable. The Mouse couldn’t come to terms with Spectrum. Therefore, you currently can’t see stations you paid for, like ESPN, FX, Disney Channel, and National Geographic.

Peacock to the rescue! Spectrum has arrange for Spectrum Cable subscribers to get one year of Peacock Premium for free (unless you only subscribe to Spectrum’s Basic or TV Essentials packages).

If you don’t have Spectrum Cable, but do have Spectrum Internet – you’ll get 90 days of Peacock Premium for free.

Jump in there and get the free Peacock Premium before Spectrum and Disney resolve their kerfuffle. It worked easily for me! Then put a reminder in your calendar to cancel Peacock 12 months from now or you’ll get charged the monthly fee when your free year runs out. Click here to get the deal

Deal #2:

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Get an extra $15/month off your Spectrum Cable bill. If you subscribe to Spectrum Cable, call them. Because of the Disney pullout, the person I spoke with said the standard refund they have been giving is $15/month. Done and done. When you call Spectrum, and the machine asks why you are calling, just say “cancel service”. Tell the person who picks up that you miss your Disney channels and want to know what discounts Spectrum is giving. They’ll offer you the $15/month off your bill. Easy.

Dayton’s Beloved Human Race Theatre Provides Much Needed Laughs in ‘Tom Jones!’

September 9, 2023 By Joshua Stucky

Wells, Brown and Cordes

The Human Race Theatre Company is on a mission…to be a resource for laughter with the World Premiere (yes, I said World) of the bawdy and outrageous ‘This is Tom Jones!’ I am again, so fortunate to have the opportunity to talk to some of the folks responsible for this fun, frenzied love story. This time around, I was able to chat with Emily Wells (Director), Mark Brown (The musical’s writer) and Jamie Cordes (one of the stars!)

JS: Thank you all for taking a minute to talk about what looks like a hoot! Mark, can you tell us a bit about the show?

Mark Brown: Of course. It’s a two hour romp…fast-paced, Boy meets Girl story based on Henry Fielding’s work.  It’s chock full of 1960’s British Invasion style music…set in the 1700’s.

JS: Weird?

MB: Yes, but this weird world that’s been created really works…full of hi-jinx and surprises.

Emily Wells: It really does work. There’s romance blended seamlessly into the show as well. It’s beautifully done.

Jamie Cordes: It has such a vibe….its a groovy, hip, fast paced, blast of a time.

JS: Mark, I know your ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ also played at the Race! Are you from somewhere near here?

MB: Actually, I am from New Jersey, but reside in Los Angeles.

Cast of ‘This is Tom Jones!’

JS: Well, I can tell you, you have quite a fan base here with ’80 Days!’ So, this being a World Premiere, have you had to make changes, or work the show differently than you anticipated.

MB: Funny you should ask….yes, putting it together here, there have been 7 revisions, 2 songs have been cut….and I have incorporated 2 scenes from the non-musical version of the show. It really has helped make the show special. I have been so lucky working with Kyle Mangold and Melinda Porto, the whole cast and crew actually. Everyone here is super nice! Truly.

EW: And the cast is only 9 people, yet they tackle 34 characters. And they do it well.

JS: Speaking of the cast, Jamie what attracted you to ‘Jones?’

JC: I am a huge fan of new(er) works in theatre.  I’ve been a part of numerous workshops of new works at The Human Race and The Puzzle in NYC.  When I read the script, I laughed out loud so many times.  I LOVE what Mark Brown has written.  It is Monty Python, Austin Powers and Airplane (the movie) humor set in an 18th century story.  Being involved in this premiere and sharing it with Dayton audiences is exciting.

JS: And the cast and crew include folks from here. Right Emily?x

EW: Yes. Correct. The show has some of our resident artists as well as others who call Dayton home. That has been a goal of ours, involving community in our productions. I believe our show Bar-B-Q was made up of 75% local people. So, we are committed to making that part of the Human Race. It’s important to put dollars into our city and our people.

JS: Great point! I feel like the Human Race is connecting well with the community and ticket-buyers. Do you guys feel that for this season?

JC: The Human Race Theatre continues to entertain and inspire audiences with new(er) works that are thought provoking and explore the human condition.  The stories on this 2023-24 season are diverse in content providing opportunities to see unique, beautiful and humorous theatrical works.

EW: We are reaching out to theater lovers in a time when many people have limited resources. We have special ticket pricing like ‘pay what can’ productions. We want everyone to see the shows. We have many young folks on staff who remind us to keep things accessible for all ages. It’s important because there is a magic in theater, that relationship between audience and artist that can only happen live. And each and every night is a unique one night experience!

Laughs Abound in 'Jones!'JS: And what do you feel audiences can expect from ‘Jones?’

MB: It’s one of those plays that has a message that isn’t in your face, or hitting you over the head. The show is total escapism blended with some nonsense and the message is revealed simply. I am hopeful people will laugh for 2 hours…who doesn’t want to do that?!

JC: I can’t express enough the joy This is Tom Jones! has provided.  The cast, creative team, and band are wonderful.  So much laughter in exploring this piece and we can’t wait for audiences to go on the journey with us!

JS: BREAK-A-LEG and again, thank you ALL for giving us a little insight into this show! Emily, continued success for you and your Company! BRAVO!

10?’s with Chef Aaron Allen of Silas

September 6, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

A Dayton native whose culinary career includes stints at Rue Dumaine, Hotel Covington and a Michelin-starred restaurant in New York has returned to Ohio to lead a new boutique eatery opening in early 2022.

Chef Aaron Allen is the Executive Chef for Silas,  a part of the revival of the former Inn at Versailles — a historic venue in downtown Versailles that was destroyed by a fire in late 2019..

The move is a homecoming for Allen, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Wright State University and got his culinary start at Rue Dumaine — one of Dayton’s most celebrated restaurants until its closure in 2017.

We asked Chef Allen to answer our 10 questions interview:

1)What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?
Probably eggs. They’re so versatile and delicious. You can do just about anything with eggs.

2) What ingredient do you dread?
I don’t dread any ingredients. If I feel challenged by something I usually force myself to learn to work with it to get over it.

Slow Roasted Ft Loramie Lamb! // rosemary, honey, garlic marinated, served with homemade nann bread, assorted chutneys + sauces

3) What’s your favorite dish to make?
There isn’t any one dish. I love to cook new dishes seasonally with what comes fresh from our farm and local partners. What excites me is new combinations and new dishes. The seasons bring so much there isn’t any reason to repeat yourself much.

HisHoneybee dessert recipe was featured in the The Wall Street Journal!

4) What’s your favorite pig out food?
Pizza for sure.

5) What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
I love Thai 9, Sueno, and Taqueria Mixteca on 3rd.

6) What’s your best advice for home chefs?
Don’t be afraid to fail. That’s how you learn. Try to cook anything you’re interested in and that’s how you learn and improve.

7) If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
My girl and my family.

picture of dining room at Silas

Silas

8) Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
I really like what Bryce Gilmore is doing at the Barley Swine in Austin. The food is super playful and delicious. Also Cesar Ramirez at Chef’s table at Brooklyn Fare. Some of the most creative food I’ve seen.

9) What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
I like to be active. I love to get outside and go for a run or a bike ride. I love to ride my motorcycle when the weather permits.

10) Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
Kitchens are always exciting and sometimes chaotic places. I’ve seen a lot happen. When I was in NYC I got to cook for Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Sean Brock. We met Sean later in the kitchen. That was pretty cool.

Chef Allen will be one of the Chefs competing in the Miami Valley Meals Diced Chef Challenge on Tues, Sept 19th at Top of the Market.

The Century Bar Celebrates Bourbon Heritage Month

September 2, 2023 By Dayton937

2 glasses of bourbonSeptember is National Bourbon Heritage Month, calling for the celebration of the ‘Native Spirit’ of America — bourbon. Culturally, economically, and socially sourced in America, bourbon is truly an all-American beverage.

Dating back 400 years, American Whiskey established itself as an important factor in the economic development, and cultural shaping in the history of the United States. It all started when English colonist George Thorpe filtered the first-ever batch of corn whiskey in Virginia. The founding father of our great nation, George Washington, continued this tradition of distilling and operated the largest whiskey distillery in Virginia, in the nation’s early years.

It is widely believed that Elijah Craig is the Father of Bourbon. In 1789, Craig concocted bourbon by maturing the existing corn whiskey, or moonshine, in oak barrels. Popular as this theory is, many argue that bourbon was not invented by any one person, and instead evolved over time.

Even though America’s distilling heritage started before the nation was founded, bourbon was declared as a unique product of the United States in an act of Congress in 1964. Federal law states that bourbon must be produced in the United States, contain at least 51% corn, and mature in freshly charred oak barrels for at least two years.

In 2007, a resolution was passed by the U.S. Senate, declaring September as National Bourbon Heritage Month. Every year, bourbon enthusiasts come together to appreciate the history, craftsmanship, and milestones of the bourbon industry.
