Greater Dayton Guide To Brunch

March 31, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

DMMBrunchIn 1895 a  British writer, Guy Beringer,  wrote  “Brunch: A Plea” in Hunter’s Weekly. He wanted people to gather for a late breakfast on Sundays not necessarily for the food but for the experience:

By eliminating the need to get up early on Sunday, brunch would make life brighter for Saturday-night carousers. It would promote human happiness in other ways as well. Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting. It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.

We have to agree with him!  Sunday brunch is becoming a more popular meal in restaurants then every before. Data from Google Trends show that search interest in brunch has been rising steadily since 2004 with the most popular searches coming around Easter and Mother’s Day. According to that same research, brunch tends to be more popular with younger urban dwellers.

Brunch also gets credit for popularizing day drinking. The creation of the Bloody Mary and Mimosa are attributed to the social events of the 1920’s during Prohibition,  when those who still had access to alcohol often mixed it with juice to hide the fact that it hadn’t been aged for long.  Nothing say brunch better that bottomless mimosa’s.

We’ve put together  a list of Sunday brunches in Dayton.  This list does not include the wonderful places that serve breakfast everyday like The Brunch Club,  Butter Cafe, Tanks, Legacy Pancake House, First Watch, The Waffle House,  The Blueberry Cafe, and Golden Nugget, but concentrates on eateries that have a special Sunday menu of eggs Benedict, french toast and a Bloody Mary or two:

A few highlights from their brunch menu:

Morning Walk in Glen Helen – Ahh, there’s nothing like a morning walk in the
Glen, especially on a beautifully lazy Sunday morning.
This dish was inspired by one such morning that
produced a Leo-sized appetite. Creamy Weisenberger
grits, my latest Kentucky discovery, are enriched
with fresh summer corn and topped with two
poached eggs, sauteed domestic shrimp and a
drizzle of piquant salsa verde…then, time for a nap.
Corn Cakes – These savory cakes are studded with fresh corn and chopped herbs and drizzled with cheddar gravy. They
are the epitome of a great summer brunch. Served
with scrambled eggs and grilled summer vegetables.
Artichoke and Summer Herb Frittata– Let’s just pretend it’s Sunday morning in Florence. A few
eggs are beaten with shredded Parmesan and a handful
of snipped herbs. You pour the mixture over olive oil
stewed artichokes, slip it into the oven as you quickly
toss ripe farmer tomatoes with fresh lemon and olive
oil. You pull the frittata from the oven, spoon on the
tomatoes, and sprinkle with toasted breadcrumbs.
As you pour the coffee, your love looks up over the
newspaper and smiles.

Worth The Wait

April 11, 2017 By Dayton937

A few weeks ago I met a couple girlfriends at the Yellow Cab Building for the Brunch Food Truck Rally.   Since brunch is my favorite meal of the week, I was geared up to go.  I was properly caffeinated, had cash in my pocket, and my pants had a little stretch to make way for all the yummy food ahead of me.  When I got there I was shocked by the amount of people who had the same plan in mind.  Everywhere I turned the lines were long.  I thought to myself that surely no food that came out of a truck could possibly be worth waiting for, but wait I did.

We landed on the always fresh and delightful Shakery Juice Bar since my friends and I were looking for something light and healthy to eat…but smells of waffle batter and maple syrup kept wafting in my direction.  Where was this heavenly scent coming from…? Of course the truck with the longest line of the day: The Drunken Waffle.

As I practically licked the last of my acai berry bowl, I made a mental note to wait for some waffles the next time.  Fortunately the next time came around much sooner than I had expected.  The Drunken Waffle was parked out back of the Cannery Loft Apartments the very next weekend, so my husband and I decided to give some waffles a whirl.

We ordered two meals and decided to split them.  I went relatively traditional with the “50 Shades of Swine,” a bacon wrapped breakfast sausage cooked into the waffle batter.  It was accompanied by a jalapeno maple syrup that wasn’t overly spicy, but left a nice lingering tickle on the tip of my tongue.  My husband took a left at classic and went with a dish that was full of twists and delicious turns:  The War Pig.  This dish had ham, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, and a scrumptious herbed mayo sandwiched in between a spicy, 3 pepper waffle.  He also got a side of asparagus that were perfectly seasoned and cooked.

All in all,  the meal was as whimsical as the names of the dishes, the flavor combinations were spot on, and the portions were not overwhelming.  Most importantly, the waffles tasted good, they were fluffy and flavorful.  I always appreciate when a restaurant (or in this case a food truck) can introduce some creativity into their food without losing focus of the basics.  The Drunken Waffle’s food is fun and exciting while still keeping the flavors at the forefront.

So the next time you find yourself in a long line at a food truck rally asking “How good can food from a truck really be?”

Trust that it can be really, really good, and yes, it may even be worth the wait!

Where you can find the Drunken Waffle this week:

Wednesday | Air National Guard Base in Springfield (Military access required) from 11am-2pm
Thursday | WHIO (1611 S Main Street in Dayton) from 11am-2pm
Saturday | Home Depot Rally in Centerville from 11am-6pm

Monthly Food Truck Brunch Kicks Off Sunday

March 31, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Everyone loves doing brunch on Sunday morning. Everyone loves going to a food truck rally. Now, Drunken Waffle and Smokin Bee-Bee-Q have come together to present the best-of-both-worlds with Brunch! Food Truck Rallies at the Yellow Cab on the first Sunday of every month, April through September.

“After all of the success of last year’s Brunch! we knew this was something that we needed to do again,” Beth Sparks, owner and operator of Drunken Waffle said. “Jeff at Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q actually had the same thought and reached out to us. When we were lining up a season’s worth of events we were happy to have his help.”

In addition to The Drunken Waffle and Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q, these monthly first Sunday rallies will feature a revolving selection of some of the area’s best trucks, all serving up their take on brunch classics.

“We do a number of brunch events pretty regularly and it’s fun to change up the menu with that breakfast influence,” Jeff Stringer, owner and operator of Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q said. “We’re not the only ones either. It’s great seeing what the other trucks come up with.”

These monthly rallies will offer mimosas, bloody marys and local beer for sale, and featuring free live music.  “Because brunch without breakfast cocktails isn’t really brunch at all,” Sparks said.

For those interested in attending Brunch! Food Truck Rallies, the first event will take place on Sunday, April 2nd from 10am-2pm. More information can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/984657345003799/

Owner Julie Delph, who you may know as the owner of Miami Valley Sports Bar, wasn’t content to just remodel that south suburb staple. She took on the task of creating a new business in historic downtown Miamisburg. Armed with an amazing shell of a building and a lot of ideas, Blue Note was born.

With a focus on live music and a jazzy ambiance, Julie + crew took on thfb_img_1477109183202e detail enriched project of creating a vibe unlike any other in the Dayton area. Dim lights, cool tones and a lot of chill creates a feeling of stepping way back in time the second you walk in the door.

With sustainability being in the forefront of design decisions, you’ll be delighted to hear the back story of some of the permanent fixtures. The marble teller stations used as partitions, the wine cellar that was the actual safe, the antique pieces of furniture you find in the “speakeasy”, and all the way down to the brass light switches in the board room that has been buried under layers of paint for decades, each and every piece was well thought out to create a unique experience for customers in 2016 and beyond.

Ok, so it looks amazing, we all agree, but what about the food & service?

Let’s cut to the chase here, the food is ridiculous. I mean ridiculous as in “I could eat here every day”, *that* kind of ridiculous. Entrees are solid, drinks are well made and happily served. Apps are a treat- yes, you really DO want your Caprese Salad fried, you do, I promise.

If you have even a fraction of a sweet tooth, order light to save room for dessert. The truffles. THE DANG http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod21/dw/image/v2/AAKG_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-godiva-piece-master-catalog/default/dwb81dad53/large/Truffle%20Max/Dark%20Chocolate%20Flight/DCFLIGHT3.jpgTRUFFLES!!! Seriously people, get the super-rich chocolatey decadence that are the Blue Note Truffles. No real words, just nom nom nom. Blue Note Bistro has the market cornered on desserts, thanks to pastry chef and general manager, Gene Bowling. If you have even the slightest  enjoyment of cheesecake on any level, get it. Get it right now. You won’t be disappointed. The last one I had was a banana-strawberry concoction that I can’t fully describe but was amazing.

Their brunch is my new favorite, hands down, but to be brutally honest, I don’t want to tell you too much because I enjoy getting in quickly.

Ok, fine. First and foremost, reservations are appreciated. It’s a small business and we all want to set them up for success, so let’s just let them know in advance if we’re bringing a group. If you can agree to that, I’ll tell you about the good stuff.

Did we agree? Great!

YOU GUYS!!! BRUNCH IS THE BEST! It’s no real secret that brunch is the best meal of the week, but we’re going to move past that obvious fact for the purpose of this story.

Blood Orange Mimosas – amazing14355052_547910875394889_3296389308184089531_n
Bloody Mary’s (extra spicy) – amazing
Their coffee (some crazy special blend, percolated the old fashioned way) – amazing
Eggs Benedict Oscar with asparagus – amazing
Quiche & Omelet of the day – yep, amazing
Biscuits & Gravy – I don’t know what the hell is in that gravy, but it’s legit the best I’ve had (though I do plan to do a Miamisburg side-by-side with Koffee Kup at a later date for confirmation)

But let’s talk about the chicken & waffles for a second. Yes, it’s trendy. Yes it’s popping up on a lot of menus lately. Yes, I know all of these things. But Blue Note is serving theirs with smoked chicken. You might not think it makes a difference but, wow. There’s this combination of the smokey & sweet that’s just… All together now… AMAZING.

I don’t even feel the slightest bit bothered by the amount of times I’ve used the word “amazing” here. Not even a little bit. It’s worthy. So worthy.

The upstairs parlor.

Here’s the deal, I’ve been there a few times now and I plan to be there regularly in the future. It’s my new spot. While I understand that it may be a bit off the beaten path, it’s worth checking out. It only takes one time. Their service has been on point every time, their food & drink is top tier, the music is unlike the norm, and the general coolness of the joint can’t be matched.

I am cordially inviting you to the coolest place to hit the Miami Valley recently. Come down to the Burg and experience this little gem…

… But don’t all come at once, because I’ll elbow you for a seat at the bar (in the nicest way possible, obviously).

Food Truck Brunch This Sunday

September 23, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

brunchEveryone loves doing weekend brunch. Everyone loves going to a food truck rally. Now, Drunken Waffle presents Dayton’s first best-of-both-worlds with Brunch! A Food Truck Rally on Sunday, September 25 from 10am-2pm at the Yellow Cab.

“Serving sweet and savory waffle sandwiches, brunch is second nature for us,” Beth Sparks, Drunken Waffle owner said. “We’ve discovered that a bunch of other food trucks in Dayton do it really well too, so we thought, ‘Hey, let’s host a brunch food truck rally!’”

Serving up brunch options alongside Drunken Waffle will be local favorites Smokin Bee-Bee-Q, Greek Street Food Truck, Harvest, El Meson and Son of a Biscuit in addition to special guests Lily’s Bistro serving Beignets and Boston Stoker serving coffee.

“Bloody Marys and Mimosa are a very important part of brunch and we’ll have them available at the bar during the brunch food truck rally,” Sparks said. “Brunch is always more fun with AM cocktails.”

In addition to food and drink, live entertainment is also being planned.

20 Places To Celebrate Mother’s Day Brunch

April 30, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

MOthersDay

Looks like you’ve found our 2016 Mother’s Day story. For the 2019 story, please click here.

Mother’s Day is the busiest brunch day in the restaurant business and the 3rd most popular restaurant day, after Valentine’s Day and New Years Eve.  It’s become a tradition for families to go out for brunch and enjoy each other’s (and their mother’s) company while they eat.

According to Open Table 54% of Mother’s Day brunch reservations are made a week in advance and 25% are made the day before.  The average restaurant will do 3 1/2 times the number of meals on Mother’s day than on a typical Sunday.
We’d like to help you make plans by suggesting the following restaurants, which are offering special Mother’s Day events:
