The Sons of Italy Invite You to Play Ball- Bocce Ball!

June 18, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

In 1995, a group of bocce (pronounced BAH-chee) enthusiasts from the Sons of Italy in Dayton decided to host a small tournament in an effort to promote the game and their Italian heritage to the surrounding community.

The first tournament, played on five clay courts sported over 40 teams and was sparsely attended by those not familiar with the game. Little did those founders know, that this little tournament would become the unofficial “Ohio State Championship” and introduce thousands to their favorite pastime.

Since those days, The Bocce Classic has grown into an annual 3 day event that last year added an amateur contest.   They will be continuing with that on Friday night, July 21st, partnering  with UpDayton, who will benefit from the proceeds of this one night tournament.  The Bocce Bash,

Kevin Sorrice (center) with 2016 Bocce Bash champs

designed for those that are new to the game, will be just a part of the Friday night fun, with a 15 food truck rally and live entertainment. If you can roll a ball, you can play bocce! You just roll a big ball down the court toward a smaller ball. Whoever gets closest to the small ball (the pallina) gets a point. Teams of 4 will compete in a single elimination tournament with the winning team getting $200 cash and bragging rights.  Grab some friends, form a team and have some fun- sign up here.  Long time lodge member and Bocce enthusiast Kevin Sorrice explains, “While bocce was traditionally played by men, today women and kids enjoy the game as well. It’s a game that brings people together and you can play with a beer in your hand.”

For the more serious bocce players, consider the 2 day Bocce Classic Tournament.  This event, which kicks off on Sat, July 22nd has brought in teams from Canada, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky in the past. Teams of 4 will compete for some serious prize money:  First $2500 Second $1500 Third $1000.  You can find more info and entry forms online.

Since 1995, this event has generated proceeds of $208,000 for the support of local charities, the Bocce Classic Scholarship, and Italian Cultural endeavors. In addition to the competition of the game of Bocce, GarlicFest will be back with food & craft vendors, beverages along with the selected charities and their booths are part of the festivities as well as a garlic eating contest and a Prince tribute band.  This free event takes place on 10 acres of tree covered grounds and organizers are  expecting approximately 5,000 people to attend this event.

“Scratch Food” – Local Company Reaching New Heights

March 29, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The “Meals from Scratch” Team with Matt Hayden (right)

Chef Matt Hayden has been a foodie all of his life. He is the guy who binge orders delivery late at night, or whips up recipes for his family and friends at a moment’s notice.  He has the kick-ass chicken recipe you love or the BBQ that melts in your mouth.  He is also quite the giver to the community.  He is always dedicating time and resources to one cause or another.

For the last 25 years Matt has been a fixture in the Dayton food community.  First with his original ownership of the Pour Haus, with their pizza following and BBQ sauces.  He also had a venture in Miamisburg called the Chimney Inn.

Those experiences lead him to open Scratch Food in Centerville off of Paragon Rd in 2010.

There is one more experience that affected him.

Laying out hundreds of meals for the day

Chef Hayden unbuttoned his shirt to expose a heart operation scar.  This health scare turned his life around, and tuned him into the healing power of foods.  Now, his business is growing but the most touching aspect, is how they are affecting the lives of Miami Valley residents.  They are literally saving lives with their food.

HERE IS THE SKINNY ON SCRATCH FOOD:

—SCRATCH FOOD consists of 2 aspects

Chef Marshall Bartley shows an incredible Chicken Dinner

1)SCRATCH EVENT CATERING:
An upscale catering business that has been hosting large and special events for over a decade.  All the food is made by chefs and they are used to catering for top area companies.  They cater events like weddings with 150-300 or more, up to 3200 people event.  They are involved heavily with Masquerage and of course the upcoming April 22nd Dayton Metro Library opening gala.  Great opportunities for a Food Adventure.

2)MEALS FROM SCRATCH:
A carry out or delivery service of frozen, pre-prepared, nutrient dense meals. This service is for the convenience of busy schedule customers, or assisted living customers.  It makes life easier for them.  It also helps those who are sick and dealing with disease management  like Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer.  Are you just looking for convenient meals to fit your healthy lifestyle?  They offer those as well.  All dishes are made carefully and prepared by chefs to strict specifications, with the freshest ingredients.

—Scratch Foods employs some of the most talented local chefs. Chef Marshall

Frozen, prepared meals by chefs, for convenience, health or fighting disease

Bartley, a lifelong friend of Matt’s is just one of the experienced crew working hard to get results for health and taste.  Another star is Kristen LeMaster, the event coordinator and Project Manager for the business.  The other chefs on the team round out this talented crew.

—Scratch Food is always giving back to the community.  Be it the Suzy Pender Memorial Fund, The Pink Ribbon Girls, or his latest, the April 22nd kickoff of the new library downtown.  For decades he has helped countless local causes.  Sisca, Boonshoft Museum, Antioch and the Bull Diabetes Center on Schantz Ave. and a couple more charities.  Food Adventures loves their stuff.

—Besides battling heart disease, Matt has another motivation.  Matt lost his mother at a young age, and she has been a source of inspiration to helping people battling illnesses.  By working with Miami Valley Hospital, their often quoted mantra is “Let Food be Thy Medicine.”

Chicken Cakes with Sweet Potato Succotash

—Want some Meals from Scratch? Within 12 hours of placing your online order at this website, you will be contacted by  email.  They will set up a day and time, convenient for you, to pick up your meals from our Centerville location, behind the Paragon Supper Club at 767 Miamisburg-Centerville Road. Your meals can be picked up 7 days a week from 10am thru 7pm.  Sometimes your meals can be picked up “on the fly” within an hour of placing your order. But typically, pickup time is agreed upon with Scratch  to make sure that your order is properly handled.

—Between the Pink Ribbon Girls, Miami Valley Hospital and pickup orders, Scratch prepares over 1,000 meals each week.  Are you in need of help because of a family member with cancer?  GET INFORMATION HERE.

Ribs – smoked all day

—DEEP FRIED GARLIC CHICKEN at THE GARLIC FESTIVAL:
Unforgettable flavor in a deep fried chicken strip. Cheesy garlic goodness is what awaits you, with a sinful butter dip.

—BBQ BABY BACK RIBS:
Fall off the bone. with incredible homemade BBQ sauce. A taste you wont soon forget.

—SMOKED CHICKEN:
Quarters of chicken, that come out so juicy it is like it is baked. Again the BBQ sauce for dipping is a must.

—SMOKED PULLED PORK:
Matt used to travel the country to learn how to smoke meats. The results of his studies are a near perfect pulled pork.

Smoked Chicken

We have tried a dozen of these frozen meals over the past month and have some favorites.  Here are our “MUST EATS”

MUST EATS FROM MEALS FROM SCRATCH:

—HOMESTYLE MEAT LASAGNA WITH FRESH GREEN BEANS:
You wont believe the food was made and frozen a couple of weeks ago, it tastes like freshly made. Each forkful of lasagna and sauce is a taste of comfort food.

Meat Lasagna and Green Beans

—CHICKEN CABBAGE ROLLS:A unique, healthy take on an old comfort food. But guess what, it works. Try this for the surprise of your night.

-CHICKEN PARMESAN WITH CAVATAPPI PASTA and FRESH GREEN BEANS:
Just enough sauce with the chicken and pasta, make this a delightful dish.. Again the freshness is amazing and we can’t believe it was not just made.

-CHICKEN CURRY with CAULIFLOWER, SWEET POTATOES and PEAS:
Indian dish, with fresh veggies. It is unique and flavorful, and the spiced chicken is the best part.

-ORANGE CHICKEN WITH FRESH BROCCOLI and RICE BLEND:
Probably Big Ragu’s Favorite Dish. Worth a treat sometimes.

Chicken Cabbage Roll

-SOUTHWESTERN CHICKEN WITH COLORADO SAUCE, BLACK BEAN MASHUP and RICE BLEND:
The sauce on the chicken and the bean mashup steal the show. A great tasting dish that doesn’t taste healthy, but it is. Try this high nutrient dense plate to curb your appetite.

-ASIAN CHICKEN BLEND with BROCCOLI, SESAME SLAW and RICE BLEND:
Great tasting slaw on top of chicken with that Asian taste. The veggies and rice go perfect with it. They nailed the flavor on this one.

-OLD WORLD CHICKEN CAKES WITH SWEET POTATO SUCCOTASH:

Beef and Vegetables

So delicious and inventive, it is amazing how healthy the dish is. One of those plates you cant get enough of, forkful after forkful.

So there you have it… our MUST EATS …

The Dayton Women of Bocce Ball

June 17, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

If strength is in numbers, then bocce ball is alive and well in Dayton, Ohio.  You may remember we did a story on the Sons of Italy, Bella Villa Hall’s men’s bocce league.

Well move over fellas, it is the ladies’ turn!  Thursday’s in the summer, the bocce courts are ruled by the women.

Now, let’s get rollin’….

Family Fun: Eldora & her grandson enjoy a bocce match

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE WOMEN OF DAYTON BOCCE BALL:

— You have to be a member of the Italian club, John Pirelli Lodge (click here to join) to be in the leagues.  That means you or your spouse must have some type of Italian lineage in your genealogy.  Sometimes the courses are open to the public like the July 15th Bocce Bash and Bocce Classic Weekend

— The Women’s bocce League plays Thursday nights, during the summer.

Helen Longo (middle) and her longtime bocce teammates

— The league started in 1979, with 2 dirt courts.  Now they are turf and much easier to maintain.

— TRIVIA: The turf on the bocce courts was donated from University of Dayton’s, Welcome Stadium

— Currently, they have about 12 womens bocce teams with 4 players on each team.  There are about 50 – 60 lady players in the Dayton area.

— Players range from 17 years old to 80 years young

Mary D’Amico pointing out the closest ball

— A year end banquet, each year is planned to pass out awards.  Food Adventures is sure some incredible Italian food is served.

Melody Sorice Knostman (right) with a bocce buddy

As we watched the matches and talked with the ladies, there were lots of cheers and jeers going on at different courses.  One thing was for sure, these people were having fun.  Some wore fun hats, while others had family members cheering them on.  Sometimes there are snacks and at special events there are food and beer booths.  We met some great Daytonians and we want to share them with you.  So here are some of the Dayton Women of Bocce Ball !

THE WOMEN OF DAYTON BOCCE BALL:

— ELDORA PERFILIO: She says she is out here to compete, but doesn’t take it as serious as some.  Eldora says she comes for the fun times and friendly people in the league.

Maria Napier (left) measures the distance to confirm a winning point

— MELODY SORICE-KNOSTMAN:  Melody has been playing bocce ball in the back yard, since she was a kid.  Her favorite part of the bocce legue is getting to spend time with the ladies. There were definitely a lot of laughs on Melody’s court as they were having a great time.

— MARY D’AMICO:  She is a tiny little spitfire and has been playing bocce ball for decades.  After hearing some of the women talk, she chimed in “They like to win you know, don’t let them fool you!”  Mary was quick to point out some rules on her court, and seemed to be incredibly

Thursday night fun at Bella Villa Hall

knowledgable about the bocce sport.

— HELEN LONGO: For 36 years Helen has been playing ball in the bocce leagues.  She was one of the first founding members.  She shared the long history of women’s bocce at the club with us.  It has been going on so long innher opinion because it is “just a lot of fun.”

— MARIA NAPIER:  Maria agrees that it is all about having fun.  She has been playing for 2 years, and says it is a great time.  She also enjoyed a cold adult beverage on the hot summer evening.

Julia Hall shows perfect bocce form

— JULIA HALL:   For the past 10 years Julia has been a part of the leagues and again points to the good times.  She enjoys meeting new friends of all ages.  “There are a lot of nice people here.”

The photo definition of “chillin” in the dictionary

That seems to be the theme.  Fun times, good friends and anyone can play bocce ball. Any age, man or woman can adapt fairly easily.  Whether you are a beginner or playing for years, you can still compete with anyone and have fun.

Bocce is a simple game to learn, it is a cross between shufflebord and bowling.  The rules are simple.  you first roll a little yellow ball called a “pallino” to the far end of the court.  You then try to get your bocce balls closest to the small yellow ball as possible, while your opponents do the same.  Whoever is closest to the “pallino” earns points and thats how you win the game.  Typically you play until someone has 21 points.  It is easy to get the hang of it and you will be addicted in no time.

Juggling the bocce balls

If you would like to play bocce ball, there are 2 fun events coming up that are open to the public.

1) THE AMBER ROSE RESTAURANT:  Look for the kings of comfort food, to throw a Lithuanian twist into Garlic Fest. Look for some Garlic Cheese Fries and a Mini Garlic Monkey bread creation.  It looks like owner Joe Castellano will be showcasing his Italian roots as well!

2) BRIXX ICE CO.: What is a festival without Brixx?  Chef and owner Chris Bhai always pushes the envelope while hitting home runs in taste.  His menu will have Grilled Wings tossed in your choice of sauces including Award winning Spicy Garlic, Sriracha BBQ, or Creamy Parmesan.  Also, look for an Italian Bologna Sandwich on Sun Dried Foccocia with Brixx Signature sauce.  Garlic Parm Chicken on roll and homemade kettle chips will please too..  The MUST EAT is Garlic Mortadella Mac N Cheese…(((BOOM)).

Brixx will be featuring their Spicy Garlic Wings

3) EL MESON:  The Latin food world will be well represented at Garlic Fest.  El Meson will feature their famous Paella, as well as their incredible food truck menu.  Their South American gourmet food is made with love, and you can taste it in every bite.  Served with incredible presentation, the food tastes even better than it looks.  Our Must Eats here are the Paella and Empanadas

4) GIOVANNI’S: The Italian pride of Fairborn is no stranger to garlic.  They promise to feature a Garlic and Gorganzola Stuffed Burger, and Garlic Pulled Pork Sandwich with Coleslaw, among other treats.  Our must eats here are the Italian Steamed Clams.  Chef Cassaundra Spaziani is bringing the good to the fest!

5) GYRO PALACE: How about a Middle Eastern spin on garlic?  Look now further than the masters at Gyro Palace.  They are featuring garlic hummus, chicken shawarma and falafel with garlic sauce.  Last but not least, their signature Gyros are MUST EATS, and will have a garlic Tzatki sauce.

Mamma DiSalvo’s will be on hand with some garlic sauced pasta !

6) KOWALSKI HOTS: The NY Hot dog guy brings his cart to fest with a garlic twist… literally.  He will feature garlic butter breadsticks and a Garlic Dog with Sauerkraut option.  He will have his regular hot dog menu available too.  Try the Zweigel Red Hots with coney sauce or the Hoffmans brand White Hots with Hoffman’s Mustard &onions.  These are Big Ragu and Hungry Jax’s faves.   Thank us later.

7) MAMMA DISALVO’S RESTAURANT:  Nothing says garlic like Mamma DiSalvo’s.  They will be featuring a pasta dish with olive oil, tomatoes, sauce and GARLIC!  They may even add a little asparagus.  Whatever the dish, make sure you try the family restaurant that has stolen Dayton’s heart for over 3 decades!  Bobby DiSalvo’s pasta dishes are MUST EATS !

The Mohawk Burger from Mohawk Freestyle Grill

8) MOHAWK FREESTYLE GRILL:  Beijing Garlic Street Rolls are the special feature, a menu item you cannot get anywhere in the USA except Garlic Fest this Sunday. We love Chef Aaron and his big bites with big flavors.  Our MUST EAT here is the Mohawk Burger.

9) RITTER’S FROZEN CUSTARD:  He will have his regular, delicious menu available… a great choice in the heat!  Look for the incredible sundaes that Daytonians have come to know and love.   Our Must Eat is the Peanut Butter and Chocolate Sundae!

The delicious Ritter’s Frozen Custard will be on hand !

11) SONS OF ITALY’S HOLY CANNOLI BOOTH: It is like bigfoot, because not many have seen the Holy Cannoli.  It is a cannoli dipped in a guarded recipe of batter.  The cannoli is then deep fried until crisp.  It is warm, it is gooey, it feels like you’re breaking the law.  Come walk on the wild side and try a holy cannoli, or just try a regular cannoli .. you really can’t go wrong.

12) SWEET P’S HANDMADE ICE POPS:  Perfect in warm weather, look for the one time only dark chocolate garlic pops!  Handmade, hand crafted and one of a kind.  Try them, you’ll love them.  Our MUST EAT – the Nanna Cream pop!

14) THE SPICY OLIVE, OLIVE OIL STORE:  Flavor infused olive oils that you will not find anywhere else.  These oils and balsamics are some of Hungry Jax and Big Ragu’s favorite products on earth.  These incredible olive oils have kicked our cooking up a notch, and are must haves for your kitchen.  Look for the garlic lemon infused olive oil, along with many other garlic combinations.

Gyro Palace – Their gyros are the best with garlic Tzatziki sauce

15) VOLTZY’S:  The hamburger king of Dayton is here and he is sassy and garlicky.  Expect him selling some garlic burgers grilled with onions and topped with cheese.  As always, insults are still free. If personality was music, owner Rick Voltzy would be a whole brass band.

16) THE BUDWEISER BEER BOOTH:  The beer truck will be at the fest.  Come grab beer from noon-8pm, must be 21 and over.  ***Ask about buying a Garlic Fest Cup and saving money on refills.
